- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medore. Simply choosing to shun an American retailer
- 0:09Speaker 2: operating in Canada amid the growing trade tensions might not
- 0:13Speaker 2: be the best thing to do. The months of October
- 0:15Speaker 2: to December are known as the golden quarter in the
- 0:18Speaker 2: retail industry. Thanksgiving sales, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and soon
- 0:23Speaker 2: the ever-present Christmas push. It all contributes to shops of
- 0:27Speaker 2: all sorts making their profits for the year. Jim Cormier,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Director of Government Relations with the Retail Council of Canada,
- 0:35Speaker 2: says his organization represents all companies that sell us goods
- 0:38Speaker 2: and services, including American, European, and Canadian. He says bypassing
- 0:44Speaker 2: an American retailer in these days of 50% tariffs may
- 0:48Speaker 2: be doing more harm than good.
- 0:50Speaker 1: They're also paying... a significant amount of wages across Canada.
- 0:55Speaker 1: They're paying property taxes across Canada. You know, they may
- 0:58Speaker 1: be contributing more to Canada than a smaller Canadian retailer
- 1:02Speaker 1: might be. So I'm not trying to direct people in
- 1:06Speaker 1: their shopping choices. All I'm saying is make sure that
- 1:09Speaker 1: you take a full look at it before you make
- 1:11Speaker 1: your shopping decisions because, you know, the large American retailer
- 1:15Speaker 1: might be contributing to a lot more in your local
- 1:18Speaker 1: community than another Canadian option.
- 1:22Speaker 2: A new political survey conducted by La Presse shows that
- 1:25Speaker 2: the governing CAQ, which had been languishing in the polls,
- 1:29Speaker 2: has surged in popularity and is in a virtual tie
- 1:32Speaker 2: with the Parti Quebecois. Ottawa Bureau Chief with La Presse,
- 1:35Speaker 2: Jules-Denis Belavance, says that's a shocking result just one day
- 1:40Speaker 2: into the Quebec provincial election. He says the numbers show
- 1:43Speaker 2: that the governing party is rising from the dead.
- 1:46Speaker 3: The numbers were pretty gloom and doom for the cause
- 1:50Speaker 3: of Amir Quebec and now We did have a survey,
- 1:54Speaker 3: about 1,000 people, that shows that it's a neck-and-neck race
- 1:59Speaker 3: now between the Parti Québécois and the Coalition Avenir Québec.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The latest numbers show that the Parti Québécois is still
- 2:05Speaker 3: leading with 28%, and the Coalition Avenir Québec is at 27%,
- 2:09Speaker 3: and the Liberal Party at 20%. For the CAQ, that's
- 2:13Speaker 3: a jump of seven points in two weeks.
- 2:17Speaker 2: A local financial advisor says the province and the capital
- 2:20Speaker 2: city need to be ready for the economic boom to
- 2:23Speaker 2: come from renewed hydro development. Larry Short of Short Financial,
- 2:27Speaker 2: a division of IA Private Wealth, says it's time for
- 2:30Speaker 2: the capital city to muscle up and hire more staff
- 2:33Speaker 2: to prepare for and respond to greater pressure on the
- 2:37Speaker 2: local housing market. Short says the capital city and the
- 2:40Speaker 2: province as a whole should be hiring people to help
- 2:43Speaker 2: with planning and development.
- 2:46Speaker 4: My thought is that the bottleneck may be in the
- 2:48Speaker 4: planning department, putting more bodies there, streamlining procedures, making sure
- 2:56Speaker 4: that we're ready for further development, and we encourage more
- 3:03Speaker 4: real estate development in the local area.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
