- 1:51Speaker 2: Yours is somebody else's.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Johnny, They're the Cubella diamond.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, matter think I have. It's a pink diamond. That's right.
- 2:00Speaker 4: One of the companies who represented roid is seventy five
- 2:02Speaker 4: thousand dollars policy on it. The owner of the stone,
- 2:04Speaker 4: a jeweler named Joseph Wentworth, was trying to sell it.
- 2:07Speaker 4: So last night the Sabella Diamond was stolen.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'll be right over Bold Bailey in the Exciting Adventures

- 2:26Speaker 2: fabulous freelance insurance investigator. Oh It's truly Johnny Dollar. Expense
- 2:45Speaker 2: account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the Universal Adjustment
- 2:49Speaker 2: Bureau Hertford, Connecticut, following as an account of expenses encourage
- 2:53Speaker 2: during my investigation of the Rolling Stone matter expense account
- 3:01Speaker 2: out of one a dollar twenty cap fair from my
- 3:02Speaker 2: apartment of the Office of Universal Adjustment, Girl patmac cracken
- 3:06Speaker 2: gave me one additional dope he had which wasn't much,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and a headed for New York a side of two
- 3:10Speaker 2: twenty six dollars forty cents and the apartment of Joseph Wentworth.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I was just released from the hospital an hour ago.
- 3:16Speaker 2: They kept me overnight for observation. Nothing serious, I hope,
- 3:19Speaker 2: mister Wentworth. No, I was hit on the back of
- 3:21Speaker 2: the head. At first they suspected the Skoll facture, but
- 3:24Speaker 2: it was only a slight concussion. Wow, you're lucky. Practically
- 3:27Speaker 2: my total assets stolen.
- 3:28Speaker 5: And you call it lucky.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You mean the Sabala diamond. I have borrowed heavily to
- 3:32Speaker 2: purchase that stone, mister Dollar, I'm afraid I'm just about ruined. Well,
- 3:36Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, it was insured for seventy five
- 3:39Speaker 2: thousand dollars. You don't understand the insurance money will barely
- 3:42Speaker 2: cover the loans. The diamond wasn't insured for his full value.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I see. And what's worse, I had a customer for it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I was almost ready to close the deal. Could have
- 3:50Speaker 2: gotten at least one hundred thousand, maybe more. Trying to
- 3:53Speaker 2: tell me exactly what happened, mister Wentworth. Last evening, Eloise
- 3:57Speaker 2: stopped by the shop at six. We were going to
- 3:59Speaker 2: have dinner. Aloise Eloise Barnes by Beyonce. I started to
- 4:03Speaker 2: close up and I remembered I'd forgotten to put some
- 4:05Speaker 2: things in the safe. She went down the streetaways to
- 4:08Speaker 2: hail a taxi, and I went back inside and left
- 4:10Speaker 2: the front door unlocked. I must have. I was in
- 4:12Speaker 2: my hurry. I opened the safe and I heard a
- 4:14Speaker 2: sound behind me. I started to turn, but too late.
- 4:18Speaker 2: That's the last I remember. The police figure out what
- 4:20Speaker 2: you were hit with. Yes, a heavy brass candlestick in
- 4:23Speaker 2: my shop. Then when Eloise brought me to, the Sabala
- 4:26Speaker 2: Diamond was gone just a minute, you say Eloise brought
- 4:30Speaker 2: you to?
- 4:30Speaker 5: Yes?
- 4:31Speaker 2: You see when I didn't come right back outside, she
- 4:33Speaker 2: started wondering what had happened. She came in and found
- 4:36Speaker 2: me lying on the floor. How long have you known
- 4:40Speaker 2: Aloise mister Wentworth? About a year? Why mind giving me
- 4:44Speaker 2: her address? I think I'd like to talk to her.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I went to count out of three dollars ready cab
- 4:53Speaker 2: fair to Welowise Barn's apartment. Aloise look if anything more
- 4:58Speaker 2: expensive than the Sabala Diamond, And I had the feeling
- 5:01Speaker 2: that underneath that lovely surface she was almost as hard.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Her gray eyes never left my face as we talked,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and I got the impression she had nately waived me
- 5:09Speaker 2: cataloged me and put a price tag on me.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Great, I can't help you much, Johnny. Joe went with
- 5:15Speaker 6: apparently told you.
- 5:16Speaker 7: All there is to tell about it.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You were out looking for a taxi at the time,
- 5:20Speaker 2: went with, got slut.
- 5:21Speaker 6: That's right. I feel sorry for Joe. That was a
- 5:25Speaker 6: lot of diamond to lose.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Must be quite a stone id to.
- 5:29Speaker 6: Go for those things.
- 5:31Speaker 5: I know.
- 5:31Speaker 6: I guess some people really have a thing about diamonds.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But you, huh, all.
- 5:36Speaker 6: Right, just happens through a couple of things I prefer
- 5:40Speaker 6: like what like money and mink?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Huh. But now according to your fiance you.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Were, it's a minute.
- 5:49Speaker 2: According to my what your fiance what worth?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Johnny?
- 5:53Speaker 6: That may be his idea, but it's not mine.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We s'll not engage Joe.
- 5:58Speaker 6: It's been very nice to me and I like him.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Were the friends to fly that I'm concerned? Oh yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 6: I'm afraid. I'm not to engaged type, Johnny. I tried
- 6:10Speaker 6: it once or twice, but it didn't work. Seems to
- 6:12Speaker 6: interfere with my hobby. Your hobby, Yes, having fun, that's
- 6:20Speaker 6: your hobby, Johnny.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Well, at the moment, trying to find the Sabama diamond.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Then what well, I have been known to have fun
- 6:31Speaker 2: now and then.
- 6:33Speaker 6: Johnny, I hope you find the diamond real soon.
- 6:43Speaker 2: The invitation was printed in large type. This was no
- 6:48Speaker 2: time for an RSVP, especially since I remember it went
- 6:51Speaker 2: Worth mentioning a customer who's been anxious to buy the
- 6:54Speaker 2: diamond just before I was stolen. I called Wentworth and
- 6:57Speaker 2: got the man's name, General Mantel, who had an apartment
- 6:59Speaker 2: just Fifth Avenue in the seventies. Ah.
- 7:01Speaker 7: Yes, mister Dollar. The Sabala diamond an exquisite stone. The
- 7:06Speaker 7: pink radiance of it when it caught the light positively hypnotic.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Such a pity it was stolen.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Mister Wentworth tells me he was negotiating with you for
- 7:14Speaker 2: the sale of that dime. That is correct.
- 7:16Speaker 7: Unfortunately we had reached a stalemate yesterday.
- 7:19Speaker 5: You see, he.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Wanted more than the diamonds worth.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Well maybe that's a matter of opinion, mister Dollar.
- 7:24Speaker 7: I am a collector and a connoisseur.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I know what such.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Things are worth. Are Yes, I only hope it will
- 7:30Speaker 7: be recovered before Friday. It would make things so much
- 7:33Speaker 7: more enjoyable for me. What happens Friday, I am leaving
- 7:36Speaker 7: for Europe. Oh business trip. Not really, as a matter
- 7:42Speaker 7: of fact, more of an impulse than anything else.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Huh, anything wrong.
- 7:47Speaker 2: With that on, mister van Tell, that's a good question.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Act two of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment.
- 8:11Speaker 8: Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star
- 8:16Speaker 8: there stands yet another flag representing one of the fifties states.
- 8:20Speaker 8: Alabama state flag of Saint Andrew, the symbol of the Confederacy,
- 8:24Speaker 8: and the national flag of Scotland. Alabama state capital, Montgomery,
- 8:30Speaker 8: served as the first capital of the Confederacy, and it
- 8:33Speaker 8: was on the steps of its capitol building that Jefferson
- 8:36Speaker 8: Davis took the oath of office as President of the
- 8:38Speaker 8: Confederated States of America. The Scottish cross is in the
- 8:43Speaker 8: form of an x or saltier and is also found
- 8:47Speaker 8: on the state flags of Georgia and Mississippi. Perhaps it
- 8:52Speaker 8: is the independent, rugged spirit of the Scots that recommended
- 8:55Speaker 8: its national symbols of the Confederacy as a symbol of
- 8:59Speaker 8: its rebellion. Alabama's state flag, the flag of the Commenty
- 9:04Speaker 8: second State twenty of the Union, was adopted on February sixteenth,
- 9:07Speaker 8: eighteen hundred and ninety five, and no.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Act too, if yours truly Johnny Dollar and the rolling
- 9:14Speaker 2: stone metter. I went back to my hotel, stretched out
- 9:22Speaker 2: on the bed and went over the whole thing in
- 9:23Speaker 2: my mind. Elloie, who liked the things that money could buy,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and who supposedly had been looking for a taxi while
- 9:31Speaker 2: Wentworth was slugged and the diamond lifted. Then there was
- 9:34Speaker 2: Gerle Mantel, a collector who was now suddenly leading for Europe. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 2: could be either of them. Johnny Dillen, you're looking for
- 9:46Speaker 2: the Sabalah diamond, mister Dalla was that?
- 9:50Speaker 3: Well, that doesn't matter. I know where the diamond is.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Oh where?
- 9:54Speaker 3: That's how fast Dollar? I'm sure the insurance company represent
- 9:58Speaker 3: what pick quite a bit together stone pack. The question
- 10:01Speaker 3: is how much.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Oh there's a bigger question than that, friend, whether you're
- 10:05Speaker 2: on the level or not.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I suppose I can show you the case that diamond
- 10:09Speaker 3: was kept him. Would you be convinced them?
- 10:11Speaker 2: Maybe?
- 10:12Speaker 3: And Tonio's bond East fifty third?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe they're in an hour. Wait a minute, how
- 10:17Speaker 2: I know you, I'll know you. Hey, wait a minute.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I had them four two dollars even drinks at Antonio's
- 10:32Speaker 2: while I waited for my telephone buddy to contact me.
- 10:35Speaker 2: A half hour went by and nothing happened. Then somebody
- 10:38Speaker 2: came in and went to a corner booth. Not the
- 10:41Speaker 2: person I'd been expecting, but just as interesting. So I
- 10:45Speaker 2: went over. Hello, Eloise, Johnny, sit down.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Thanks, expecting someone, all sorts of people, but this is
- 10:57Speaker 6: a pleasant disguise. But bring you around here?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Business?
- 11:01Speaker 5: I thought.
- 11:02Speaker 6: You know, Johnny, you've got a one track mind, always business.
- 11:07Speaker 6: With that attitude, you miss a lot.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Don't Donald.
- 11:10Speaker 7: Oh here you Why Elouise, Oh why it's mister Dollar.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Well, mister Mantel. Jeryl. I didn't know you two know
- 11:19Speaker 2: each other.
- 11:19Speaker 7: Oh, yes, we've been friends for years. As a matter
- 11:22Speaker 7: of fact, it was Luise who told me about the
- 11:24Speaker 7: Sabala Damond.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Oh he didn't tell me that, Eloise.
- 11:28Speaker 6: You didn't ask me, Johnny. Oh, cherl they had waiters.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Seems to be signaling to.
- 11:33Speaker 2: You, that's what I see.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I'll be right back.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Well, look, Eloise, I think i'd better be getting along.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Don't leave, Johnny.
- 11:42Speaker 5: You've got to take with Mantel.
- 11:43Speaker 6: He just wanted to have a drink with me before
- 11:45Speaker 6: he left for Europe. I told him I was meeting
- 11:47Speaker 6: Joe went with you, so he said he'd stop by
- 11:49Speaker 6: for a minute.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Did went with know that you and Mantell are old friends?
- 11:54Speaker 6: I don't no reason to tell him. Johnny was very
- 11:57Speaker 6: tiresome about things like that.
- 11:59Speaker 2: You mean he's jealous.
- 12:01Speaker 6: I wonder what happened to Daryl this trip.
- 12:03Speaker 2: He's taking to Europe. I gather he got the idea
- 12:05Speaker 2: rather suddenly.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Jeryl very impulsive that way.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'll be getting along. Eloise. Looks like a
- 12:13Speaker 2: man I came here to meet isn't going to show.
- 12:15Speaker 6: I can't imagine what's keeping Joe.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I say, we've both.
- 12:19Speaker 6: Been stood up, Johnny. Maybe we should do something about
- 12:24Speaker 6: usn't well?
- 12:25Speaker 2: As I told you, right now, the only thing I
- 12:27Speaker 2: have on my mind.
- 12:28Speaker 6: I know that diamond the girl could get tired of waiting, Johnny, Eloise.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I don't think you've ever waited very long for anything.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Cheerwater.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I'll get out on it.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Donner, Well, oh what we were wondering? What has happened
- 12:49Speaker 2: to you, mister Dollar. I'm certain you're a very efficient investigator,
- 12:52Speaker 2: but it seems to me that you've questioned Eloise all
- 12:55Speaker 2: you need to or have your conversations with her and
- 12:57Speaker 2: now reached the unofficial state. If that is the case,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and I suspect it is, i'd better remind you that, Elouise.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Maybe i'd better remind you of a couple of things
- 13:06Speaker 2: went worth in the first place.
- 13:09Speaker 7: Over here with there's dollars a load that a package
- 13:12Speaker 7: for you?
- 13:12Speaker 5: So gentlemen just left with me?
- 13:14Speaker 2: Did he give his name? Oh so no, but there
- 13:16Speaker 2: was a short man of STOCKI in the world grade suit.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Okay, thanks you go, oh, thank you.
- 13:22Speaker 2: As I started to say hello, what do you went with?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Couldn't take a chance contacting you, somebody was following me.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Contents of the package will show you. I know what
- 13:33Speaker 2: I'm talking about. We'll contact you later. What's this all about?
- 13:37Speaker 5: Dollar?
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's from a man who formed me a couple of
- 13:39Speaker 2: hours ago. If it's what I think is in this package? Yeah,
- 13:44Speaker 2: empty jewel case, your name on? I went with, what
- 13:47Speaker 2: that's the case? I kept the subato diamond in. Yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 2: see you later. I went with where are you going?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Dollars back to my hotel room. I'll wait to hear
- 13:53Speaker 2: from him. I went outside and started for the corner
- 13:59Speaker 2: to grab a can. As I passed the alley, I
- 14:02Speaker 2: spot at something strawl on the ground. A body with
- 14:06Speaker 2: Gerald Mantell act free of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in
- 14:16Speaker 2: a moment.
- 14:18Speaker 7: The way a man conducts himself at ease or under
- 14:21Speaker 7: stress shows what he's made of. It shows his character
- 14:25Speaker 7: under the strongest flight. This is particularly true when a
- 14:28Speaker 7: man becomes a prisoner of war. One of the points
- 14:32Speaker 7: of the Code of Conduct of the American Fighting Man says,
- 14:36Speaker 7: if I become a prisoner of war, I will keep
- 14:39Speaker 7: faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information
- 14:42Speaker 7: nor take part in any action which might be harmful
- 14:44Speaker 7: to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command.
- 14:49Speaker 7: If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those
- 14:52Speaker 7: appointed over me, and will back them up in every way.
- 14:56Speaker 7: The very essence of the ideals set forth in those
- 14:58Speaker 7: words were displayed by by Commander later Rear Admiral Richard
- 15:03Speaker 7: Antrim in April nineteen forty two, while a prisoner of
- 15:06Speaker 7: war and macasser Duchy Cindies during World War II. Acting
- 15:11Speaker 7: instantly on behalf of a naval officer who was subjected
- 15:13Speaker 7: to heavy punishment, Commander Antram boldly tried to quiet the
- 15:17Speaker 7: guard and persuade him to discuss the charges against the officer.
- 15:20Speaker 7: The guard refused, tension increased. The entire enemy prison force
- 15:25Speaker 7: was faced by twenty seven hundred Allied prisoners.
- 15:29Speaker 5: An order was given to continue the punishment.
- 15:31Speaker 7: Suddenly, Commander Antrum, at the risk of his own life,
- 15:34Speaker 7: stepped forward and volunteered to take.
- 15:36Speaker 5: The remainder of the punishment.
- 15:38Speaker 7: This sudden move got a roar of acclaim from the
- 15:40Speaker 7: inspired Allied troops, and saw amazed the enemy that both
- 15:44Speaker 7: men were spared any further indignities or punishment. Commander Antrum's
- 15:49Speaker 7: heroic and unselfish conduct brought about better conditions for the
- 15:52Speaker 7: prisoners and earned new respect for American officers and men.
- 15:57Speaker 7: Commander Richard Antrim upheld a highest ideals of an officer
- 16:02Speaker 7: and learned for himself the medal of Honor.
- 16:04Speaker 2: And now Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and
- 16:07Speaker 2: the Rolling Stone matter. Mantell, Mantel, come out of a plant,
- 16:23Speaker 2: my kid? All right? Are you okay? Who did it?
- 16:33Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Dollar, The headwaiter told me a taxi driver wanted to
- 16:37Speaker 7: see me outside. I came out, but there was no
- 16:41Speaker 7: cab in sight. I thought he might be at the corner, so.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I started walking past the alley here.
- 16:47Speaker 7: Yes, mister dollar, why would anyone want to beat me up?
- 16:52Speaker 2: I'm can think of one possibility. Mantell is you wanted
- 16:55Speaker 2: the Sabala diamond pretty badly, but went with wouldn't sell
- 16:58Speaker 2: at your price. I'm suggesting you lifted the diamond and
- 17:02Speaker 2: somebody was trying to get it back from you. Just now,
- 17:05Speaker 2: I don't have the diamond. I maybe you know where
- 17:08Speaker 2: it is.
- 17:09Speaker 7: No, I swear I don't.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I was forgetting beaten up just now.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I am every bit as much in the dock as
- 17:16Speaker 2: you are. I didn't know whether he was telling the
- 17:23Speaker 2: truth or not, but I had no proof he was lying.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I did him five a dollar, even a pot of
- 17:28Speaker 2: coffee at my hotel Roman. I tried to pull some
- 17:30Speaker 2: threads together, but they didn't pull. If Mantell had the stone,
- 17:35Speaker 2: who phoned me and sent the empty jewel case to
- 17:37Speaker 2: convince me he had information?
- 17:39Speaker 3: How did he fit?
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah? Come, oh, why words come in here, mister dollary,
- 17:48Speaker 2: I have some information that will interest you. Yeah. Yes,
- 17:52Speaker 2: First though, I owe you an apology for well flying
- 17:55Speaker 2: off the handle when I saw you with Elouisa Antonio. Okay, okay,
- 17:59Speaker 2: see'll touch you. Now, what's the information. Well, just a
- 18:02Speaker 2: few minutes ago, a man telephoned me at my apartment.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Huh that I think he was the same one who
- 18:06Speaker 2: phoned you and sent the empty jewel case. What he's
- 18:08Speaker 2: said that he knew where the diamond was and for
- 18:11Speaker 2: a price, would furnish the information. Ah. Now, I wonder
- 18:15Speaker 2: why he suddenly switched negotiations from me to you. Well,
- 18:19Speaker 2: perhaps he thought it too dangerous to continue with you.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Maybe, speaking of danger, I wish I could locate this
- 18:26Speaker 2: character before something happens to him.
- 18:28Speaker 5: That's the point, mister Dollar.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I think I know where he is. Well, he must
- 18:32Speaker 2: have placed his call to me through a switchboard, because
- 18:34Speaker 2: I heard an operator in the background saying Hotel Masefield.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Hotel Macefield. Huh, thanks for the lead, went Worth, I'll
- 18:41Speaker 2: check with you later. I headed for the Macefield and
- 18:46Speaker 2: described the man I was looking forward to the desk clerk.
- 18:49Speaker 2: The clerk said his name was Krauss, that he checked
- 18:51Speaker 2: out that morning. This I didn't get because he'd called
- 18:54Speaker 2: Wentworth from the hotel. Shortly before I had the clerk
- 18:57Speaker 2: let me in the cross's room, hoping I could find
- 18:59Speaker 2: some lead. On where he'd gone. I did a scratch
- 19:02Speaker 2: pad with the imprint of a pencil still visible, a
- 19:04Speaker 2: phone number and a name Catcart hotel. I headed there
- 19:08Speaker 2: fast and was referred to room four thirteen. Hello Cross,
- 19:16Speaker 2: there must have been state. My name is Colin unger
- 19:19Speaker 2: me that your name's Krauss and you're the guy who
- 19:21Speaker 2: phoned me and said he had information about that diamond. No, no, no,
- 19:24Speaker 2: that's wrong. Come on, let's quit playing games. When you
- 19:27Speaker 2: call Wentworth a while ago he found out the name
- 19:29Speaker 2: of the hotel July. I haven't told him since. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:34Speaker 2: that's what I thought. What remired about that phone call? Why?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Because he hoped I'd find you for him, but you
- 19:43Speaker 2: had talked to him earlier. Yeah. The theft of that
- 19:46Speaker 2: diamond was rigged between you and Wentworth, wasn't it, And
- 19:48Speaker 2: you slugged him to make it look legitimate. Well yeah, yeah,
- 19:54Speaker 2: but now you're hiding from Wentworth. Why what happened to
- 19:57Speaker 2: your cozy little partnership? Blackmail dollars?
- 20:00Speaker 6: What Worth?
- 20:01Speaker 5: Don't move either of you?
- 20:03Speaker 2: Well, what it looks as though I figured you right,
- 20:07Speaker 2: You thought I might have better luck finding Krause than
- 20:09Speaker 2: you had, So he gave me his last known address
- 20:11Speaker 2: and followed me, Now, what's this about blackmail?
- 20:14Speaker 5: I thought I could trust you, Kraus.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Look, I wasn't really going to blackmail. You got to
- 20:18Speaker 2: believe that. I think I get it now. Kraus was
- 20:21Speaker 2: supposed to turn the stone over you after a decent time.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It elapsed and Steady held on to it and tried
- 20:26Speaker 2: to blackmail you about your being involved in the fake robbery.
- 20:29Speaker 2: That's why he pretended to open negotiations with me, to
- 20:32Speaker 2: scare you into buying. Yes, but you made a big mistake, Kraus,
- 20:36Speaker 2: trying to blackmail a desperate man. I had no money
- 20:39Speaker 2: to pay you. I needed every cent from the insurance
- 20:42Speaker 2: and from what we'd get for the stone when it
- 20:43Speaker 2: was cut and sold. Why worth? Why do you need
- 20:46Speaker 2: the money for Aloise? For Eloise? Does she know about
- 20:51Speaker 2: all this?
- 20:51Speaker 5: No? No, she knows nothing about this. But she she.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Wants so many things, and I want to give them
- 20:57Speaker 2: to her. I've got to hold on to her further.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You know, you wouldn't understand. You don't know what it's
- 21:04Speaker 2: like when a girl like that gets into your blood.
- 21:07Speaker 2: You're willing to do anything like a couple of murders
- 21:10Speaker 2: went with, you're willing to add them to your list? Two? Yes, yes,
- 21:14Speaker 2: I am on our look, put that thing down. Why
- 21:16Speaker 2: don't you stop kidding yourself about Aloise? She loves me, Dollar,
- 21:20Speaker 2: I tell you she loves Are you kidding? She told
- 21:22Speaker 2: me what she loves manking money? How long do you
- 21:25Speaker 2: think she'd stick with you after the money ran out?
- 21:27Speaker 2: Get back, stay where you're You're a thief and a
- 21:29Speaker 2: fool went with but you're not a killer. Stay away,
- 21:32Speaker 2: So you just better give me that gun right now. Thanks.
- 21:42Speaker 2: You're right about Eloise. I guess I always knew it,
- 21:47Speaker 2: but I just I just couldn't face it. You just did,
- 21:54Speaker 2: and you were right about me, Dollar, I'm no killer.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I want to know something went Worth. I wasn't sure
- 22:03Speaker 2: about that at all. Expense account total including the trip
- 22:11Speaker 2: pull one hundred and forty six dollars, even remarks Kross
- 22:14Speaker 2: handed over the diamond. He and Wentworth are both in custody.
- 22:18Speaker 2: It was Wentworth who beat up Mantel for hanging around Eloise.
- 22:22Speaker 2: And Eloise last I heard, she was going her merry way,
- 22:27Speaker 2: having fun, as she called it. I never did accept
- 22:32Speaker 2: her invitation to join her after the diamond have been recovered,
- 22:35Speaker 2: and I'm not about to yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Our
- 22:52Speaker 2: star will return in just a moment.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Our flag now number is fifty stars, and behind each
- 22:58Speaker 9: star there stands yet enough flag representing one of the
- 23:02Speaker 9: fifty states. The origin of Hawaii State flag has been
- 23:06Speaker 9: the subject of much debate. It is now believed that
- 23:09Speaker 9: it was the work of foreign advisors to King Kameya Maya.
- 23:13Speaker 9: Legend also has it that it was designed at the
- 23:15Speaker 9: request of King Kameha Maya by George Beckley, an English
- 23:19Speaker 9: sea captain. The flag consists of eight horizontal and alternating
- 23:23Speaker 9: stripes of white, red, and blue, representing the eight major
- 23:27Speaker 9: islands in the chain. Also represented is the British Union Jack,
- 23:32Speaker 9: a reminder of Captain Vancouver, who, on his voyage around
- 23:36Speaker 9: the world in seventeen ninety four, gave King Kamea Maya
- 23:39Speaker 9: a British flag and the promise of British protection. The
- 23:43Speaker 9: Union Jack is also a reminder of Captain James Cook,
- 23:47Speaker 9: who discovered the Hawaiian Islands in seventeen seventy eight. Hawaii
- 23:51Speaker 9: State Flag, the flag of the fiftieth state to enter
- 23:54Speaker 9: the Union, was adopted in eighteen forty five.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Now here is our star to tell you about next
- 24:01Speaker 2: week's story. Next week, Well, the title of the ron
- 24:04Speaker 2: is the Ghost Ghost Matter, and the story lives up
- 24:07Speaker 2: to it. So join us, won't you? Yours truly, Johnny Dollar?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Yours truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, originates in
- 24:27Speaker 2: Hollywood and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Today's

- 24:38Speaker 2: John Diamond. Be sure to join us next week, same
- 24:41Speaker 2: time and station for another exciting story of yours truly,
- 24:45Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar. This is Dan Cobberly speaking. This is the

- 26:50Speaker 10: That's OTR Westerns dot Com slash Live. You're listening to
- 26:55Speaker 10: the great Detectives of Old Time Radio with Adam Graham
- 26:58Speaker 10: and now let's get back into the show.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Welcome back. Another one of those weird changes in how
- 27:12Speaker 1: we view things. Of course, the episode was named after
- 27:16Speaker 1: that famous saying about a rolling stone gathers no moss
- 27:21Speaker 1: and UH. Today though we would mostly tend to associate
- 27:25Speaker 1: it with either the band Rolling Stone or the magazine
- 27:29Speaker 1: Rolling Stone, which of course still goes back to the
- 27:32Speaker 1: same saying. But at any rate, I love the Armed
- 27:35Speaker 1: Forces radio and television services commercials, particularly the ones about
- 27:44Speaker 1: the Medal of honor winners. The ones about the state
- 27:47Speaker 1: flag I find I find kind of interesting. Though it's
- 27:50Speaker 1: it's out of date, it still keeps sending me over
- 27:53Speaker 1: to UH to find out what the current state flag is.
- 27:58Speaker 1: And I'm surprising some cases how often it's ben change.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And I thought this was just a very well plauded
- 28:05Speaker 1: and well characterized episode. It wasn't an amazing mystery, but
- 28:10Speaker 1: it definitely held my attention, and I did like how
- 28:14Speaker 1: Johnny didn't fall for the fam fatale, which is has
- 28:18Speaker 1: been shown before is a very dangerous thing in his
- 28:20Speaker 1: line of work all right. Well, now on to listener
- 28:23Speaker 1: comments and feedback, and we turned to Wes, who comments,
- 28:27Speaker 1: I love listening to Johnny Dollar, but unlike most of
- 28:30Speaker 1: the listeners whose comments you read, he's only my second
- 28:34Speaker 1: favorite detective for his integrity and intelligence. Philip Marlowe is
- 28:38Speaker 1: my number one, and among the actors who portrayed the
- 28:41Speaker 1: man with the action packed expense account Edmund O'Brien is
- 28:45Speaker 1: my favorite, though others seem to prefer Bob Bailey. Now,
- 28:48Speaker 1: there was a survey done of a website called the
- 28:52Speaker 1: Nostalgia Page, and they found that Bailey was preferred by
- 28:58Speaker 1: sixty percent of the people responding on the site, followed
- 29:02Speaker 1: by Mandel Kramer and Edmond O'Brien. I think each Johnny
- 29:08Speaker 1: Dollar has something to commend himself. O'Brien, particularly, the early
- 29:13Speaker 1: ones were really good because he put so much emotion
- 29:16Speaker 1: and you had this sort of hard boiled feel to it.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I prefer the Bailey ones myself, and that's just a
- 29:23Speaker 1: matter of preference. I don't even know if that needs
- 29:26Speaker 1: a reason, but yeah, there are definitely people who prefer
- 29:29Speaker 1: the O'Brien era on Johnny Dollar. But he also goes
- 29:33Speaker 1: on to ride very nicely, regardless of the actors involved.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I want to thank you Adam Graham for creating this podcast.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I discovered you last October and it took me until
- 29:43Speaker 1: March to listen to every episode, eight or ten a
- 29:46Speaker 1: day while in my office. The quality of my work
- 29:48Speaker 1: may have suffered, but who cares. I was entertained. The
- 29:52Speaker 1: shows you tooose to broadcast, and the regularity and depend
- 29:54Speaker 1: about ability of your productions are all first rate. But
- 29:57Speaker 1: you don't stop there. It would be easy for someone
- 30:00Speaker 1: to rebroadcast old radio show to try to profit from
- 30:03Speaker 1: work done by others, but you go beyond that. Your research, commentary,
- 30:07Speaker 1: and insight into these shows add greatly to what I
- 30:09Speaker 1: gain by listening, and even come to love the way
- 30:12Speaker 1: you say Detective. You do good work here, sir, and
- 30:17Speaker 1: I hope you keep it up for a long time.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Well thanks so much, Wes. I appreciate your con comments
- 30:22Speaker 1: and that will do it for today. Join us back
- 30:25Speaker 1: here tomorrow for Dragnet, and then we'll be back next
- 30:30Speaker 1: Friday with another episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Doller. In
