- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Of course, inside the tape, we've got Greg Cosell with
- 0:15Speaker 1: us to break down the tape. I'm Jeff Boscher alongside
- 0:18Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan and Greg is going to break down the
- 0:20Speaker 1: tape of an Eagles thirty one to nothing win over
- 0:25Speaker 1: a Los Angeles Raiders team that had seventy five total yards,
- 0:31Speaker 1: which is just amazing.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I think when I was done
- 0:36Speaker 2: watching the defense in particular, I think we should let
- 0:40Speaker 2: the league know that every Eagles opponent can only run
- 0:42Speaker 2: forty two plays.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So I really did want to start asking you, Greg,
- 0:47Speaker 1: just in normal time consumption for watching tape out of
- 0:51Speaker 1: this game compare.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Oh, I love the forty two. Well. The other great
- 0:55Speaker 2: thing about the Eagles defense is, for the most part,
- 0:59Speaker 2: they don't really change personnel. I mean, you know, on
- 1:01Speaker 2: the D line, obviously there's a couple of d tackles
- 1:04Speaker 2: and you know, and then the edge rushers here and there.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But the Eagles for the most part, on the back end,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, they're a nickel almost every single snap and
- 1:13Speaker 2: they don't change personnel. So it's beautiful. So you know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't have to worry about who's on the field. Now.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Fortunately I have a in my system, the list of
- 1:23Speaker 2: players is on each shot, so it's not like I
- 1:25Speaker 2: have to search who's that, who's that?
- 1:27Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:28Speaker 2: But still there are a lot of teams that on
- 1:30Speaker 2: defense play like nineteen twenty guys. Yeah, and you know
- 1:33Speaker 2: then like each time you know, what are they doing
- 1:35Speaker 2: in this package? You know, is that it just takes
- 1:38Speaker 2: more time.
- 1:39Speaker 1: We're gonna get Adam to defense in part two. We
- 1:42Speaker 1: would like to start off part one of the show
- 1:44Speaker 1: with offense though, because that was obviously on everybody's mind,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and the Eagles executed. I mean, they did some things
- 1:50Speaker 1: just statistically greg that they haven't done all year, like
- 1:54Speaker 1: converting seventy seven percent of their third downs, and we
- 1:57Speaker 1: know that they're one of the worst third down conversion
- 1:59Speaker 1: teams football. So when you look at the offense and
- 2:01Speaker 1: I know you're gonna we know you're going to say,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you got to take in mind who they're playing, the Raiders.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But I mean it's not like every team does this
- 2:08Speaker 1: to the Raid.
- 2:08Speaker 2: No, no, no, I don't think. I mean, again, we
- 2:10Speaker 2: know the Raiders aren't a good team, but they've also
- 2:12Speaker 2: played some good teams competitively. So it's an NFL game
- 2:16Speaker 2: and the Eagles at this point in time, even though
- 2:19Speaker 2: the goal was to beat the Raiders, in many ways,
- 2:22Speaker 2: the Eagles are playing against their standard. And I think
- 2:25Speaker 2: that's what I guarantee, that's what was talked about leading
- 2:28Speaker 2: up to this game. You know, yeah, here are some
- 2:30Speaker 2: things we want to do against this particular team, but
- 2:33Speaker 2: we have to get back to playing to our standard.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And I think that's you know, I've been around long
- 2:37Speaker 2: enough to know that's the way coaches talk about this.
- 2:40Speaker 3: You know, It's funny because Greg, when we did our
- 2:42Speaker 3: pregame show we're talking about you really mentioned it. They
- 2:45Speaker 3: clearly want to be a running team. That's they want
- 2:46Speaker 3: that to be identical, but they haven't been able to
- 2:48Speaker 3: do it well enough. Well, I'll say this much. Whether
- 2:51Speaker 3: they did well enough or not, it'll.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Be up to interpretation with the tape tells you.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But they were totally committed to it that and Sirianni
- 2:58Speaker 3: he talked about it that they wanted to play to
- 3:00Speaker 3: the personality and what they want to do, and they
- 3:03Speaker 3: came out and did it against the defense that, as
- 3:05Speaker 3: you said, could be competitive. So what do you think
- 3:07Speaker 3: of the run game. Let's get started with that.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Well, I think the thing that really stood out to
- 3:11Speaker 2: me was the fact that on the opening possession they
- 3:15Speaker 2: ran thirteen personnel four times. So I mean, you don't
- 3:19Speaker 2: run thirteen personnel because you want to toss it all
- 3:21Speaker 2: over the yard. You run thirteen personnel because you want
- 3:24Speaker 2: to run the ball. And the first two times and
- 3:27Speaker 2: the fourth time they ran gap scheme with a lot
- 3:29Speaker 2: to the third tight end crossing the formation is the
- 3:32Speaker 2: kickout blocker and Dickerson the rapper. The third time was
- 3:36Speaker 2: outside z own toss to the field again with a
- 3:38Speaker 2: lot to motion crossing the formation to play side. And
- 3:43Speaker 2: also the Goddard four yard touchdown on the shovel pass
- 3:46Speaker 2: that ended the drive was basically a gap scheme run action. Look,
- 3:50Speaker 2: so everything not every single play, and of course don't
- 3:54Speaker 2: forget it had the Hurtz design run as well. So
- 3:57Speaker 2: much about that first series was we want to on
- 4:00Speaker 2: the ball. Just what you said, Adam, I mean, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you nailed it. I mean I think that's you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I don't think they want to go away from from
- 4:08Speaker 2: who they are. I mean, obviously they want the pass
- 4:10Speaker 2: game to be more efficient, and obviously more productive. But
- 4:14Speaker 2: I don't think they want to change who they are.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What did the tape show Greg that that led to
- 4:20Speaker 1: why Dallas Goddard was targeted so much and had a
- 4:22Speaker 1: big game.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Well, some of this stuff was was just I don't
- 4:27Speaker 2: they're not gimmick plays. A shovel pass is not a
- 4:29Speaker 2: gimmick play because it comes off a gap scheme run.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Look his second he had two touchdowns right, yes, yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and drop a second touchdown it goes as a passing touchdown.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But that was that was really just outside zone. I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 2: it was as a passing touchdown, but it's just an
- 4:46Speaker 2: outside zone run really, So you know. I mean again,
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm we're not in the meeting, So I don't want
- 4:53Speaker 2: to sit here and say they weren't trying to target Goddard.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But I didn't get the sense that they came out
- 4:58Speaker 2: and said we're throwing the ball today. I was Goddard, No.
- 5:01Speaker 1: But he had a bunch of catches around the middle
- 5:02Speaker 1: of the field. Yeah, game, So I was wondering was
- 5:04Speaker 1: that a symptom of the Raiders interior defense not being
- 5:08Speaker 1: great or RPO game working well?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Gottern obviously he had a fourteen yatter on second and
- 5:15Speaker 2: six on the fourth possession, that was a really well
- 5:17Speaker 2: designed concept out of eleven personnel where he showed one
- 5:22Speaker 2: on one place side block and then the layed release
- 5:24Speaker 2: on a shallow crosser. That was a schemed play. Obviously,
- 5:27Speaker 2: it was set up for him, whether they said, oh,
- 5:30Speaker 2: let's get you know him involved. Then the thirty two
- 5:33Speaker 2: yarder on the first play the third quarter was a
- 5:36Speaker 2: very similar concept that they ran a week ago against
- 5:38Speaker 2: the Chargers. Over the years, when they've run the flood concept,
- 5:43Speaker 2: he has predominantly been the intermediate route. So you know,
- 5:46Speaker 2: again they ran it earlier this year, they weren't running it,
- 5:50Speaker 2: So I don't know if they ran it because they
- 5:52Speaker 2: said they want to get it to Goddard or they
- 5:53Speaker 2: ran it because it's a really good concept against zone.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You know. So that's hard to answer, but obviously he
- 5:59Speaker 2: was the reciption being of some of these well scheme plays.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Greg on that the last two games.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I mean, whether it's twenty one pony, we'll talk about that,
- 6:07Speaker 3: what you saw from that, which is yeah, okay, whether
- 6:10Speaker 3: it's no huddle, whether it's hurts on her center, which
- 6:14Speaker 3: is interesting that that is really becoming meaningful and we've
- 6:17Speaker 3: been waiting for it, Greg, some QB design runs.
- 6:20Speaker 2: So Greg, Yeah, overall, you know, you're we've talked about it.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You've been quoted on our show, like last week he
- 6:27Speaker 3: said they finally ran whatever the phrase you used, you
- 6:30Speaker 3: were quoted on it about these high level concepts.
- 6:34Speaker 2: What do you think of kind of what they threw
- 6:36Speaker 2: at the Raiders this week? I thought that they continue
- 6:39Speaker 2: to do that, and you know, obviously the game didn't
- 6:42Speaker 2: demand that. You know, Hurts had eighteen attempts. I don't know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: did he have a scramble in this game? I know
- 6:49Speaker 2: they were yeah to the right end, right right, right right, yes,
- 6:53Speaker 2: but there weren't many of them, you know, I think just.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Two or three. But he ran forty something yards.
- 6:58Speaker 2: So right so so so really, you know, he had
- 7:00Speaker 2: approximately twenty dropbacks. They you know, in the game, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: obviously start to get out of hand and they didn't
- 7:07Speaker 2: need to throw anymore. But to your point, Adam, I
- 7:11Speaker 2: mean the first possession of the game, there was a
- 7:14Speaker 2: quarterback counter for nine yards on third and four of
- 7:17Speaker 2: you know, and we saw some other design runs for Hurts.
- 7:21Speaker 2: This this was sort of reminiscent of what they did
- 7:24Speaker 2: last year. Certainly the year before, certainly in twenty twenty two.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I mean, you know this is who they were. You know,
- 7:31Speaker 2: hurts is a big deal in the design quarterback run
- 7:34Speaker 2: game in critical down in distant situations. Whether this becomes
- 7:37Speaker 2: something they'll continue to do, we can't answer that question.
- 7:40Speaker 2: We don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow. But that's what
- 7:42Speaker 2: they chose to do in this game as part of
- 7:45Speaker 2: a running mentality game. As I mentioned with the three
- 7:48Speaker 2: tight ends on four plays on the opening possession.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Right, you never know how a game's identity is gonna
- 7:54Speaker 1: unfold until he starts. And you know, I don't know
- 7:57Speaker 1: what the plan per se going in was, right, but
- 8:00Speaker 1: Greg I thought by the end of the game, mentioned
- 8:02Speaker 1: this to Adam on the postgame show. I thought this
- 8:05Speaker 1: game was a combination of what the Eagles used to
- 8:09Speaker 1: do or typically do well. But I've been slumping out lately,
- 8:12Speaker 1: which is quarterback runs, had some RPOs, red zone offense,
- 8:16Speaker 1: They've been great at all year long, hitting the ball
- 8:19Speaker 1: to gotter. With just a little bit of last week
- 8:21Speaker 1: stuff against the Chargers sprinkled in, I know we're going
- 8:23Speaker 1: to show and you had a flood concept it didn't
- 8:26Speaker 1: feel like a carbon copy of last week. But they
- 8:29Speaker 1: may just have felt like they did.
- 8:31Speaker 2: They didn't need to do as much of it, Jeff,
- 8:33Speaker 2: because of the nature of the game, right, But I
- 8:35Speaker 2: thought even the first player that you know, the first
- 8:37Speaker 2: third down of the game, third and three, you saw
- 8:40Speaker 2: Brown as the boundary X on the back side of trips.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So what did he do? He threw the fade to
- 8:44Speaker 2: the one on one matchup. I think he threw a
- 8:46Speaker 2: back shoulder and he probably should have gone over the
- 8:48Speaker 2: top because Brown beat beat Stokes. But you know, again,
- 8:51Speaker 2: maybe that's a nitpick. Maybe I'm wrong, you know, but
- 8:55Speaker 2: but the point is, you know, and then then obviously
- 8:57Speaker 2: he hit Smith on the vertical route. So you know,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I think you saw things that they've done well in
- 9:02Speaker 2: the past. Now we know you can't live on those
- 9:05Speaker 2: vertical routes, but we know that Hurts is a very
- 9:08Speaker 2: good vertical routes thrower. Outside the numbers. The one to Smith,
- 9:11Speaker 2: he dropped right in the bucket. These are things we've
- 9:14Speaker 2: seen over the years, so you know, we'll see, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 2: going forward, see how to look at all this stuff.
- 9:21Speaker 2: As as as concepts, I don't think of it in
- 9:24Speaker 2: terms of well they play the Raiders. This is the
- 9:26Speaker 2: Eagles have to play to who they are, right, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and and if they do that, well, we've seen the
- 9:33Speaker 2: success that they've had, you know. I mean clearly they're
- 9:36Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions, so we know they can have success. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 2: a bad team trying to figure you know, trying to
- 9:42Speaker 2: get good. You know, they've been in two of the
- 9:44Speaker 2: last three Super Bowls.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And I would add this, Greg, that you played to
- 9:49Speaker 3: what the matchup show you and tell you here's what
- 9:51Speaker 3: we're going to do against these players Eric Stokes Porter,
- 9:54Speaker 3: they went after Porter, the talk rookie cor I would
- 9:57Speaker 3: state that that now on Jeffs, you know about god
- 10:01Speaker 3: here getting involved. Maybe this was something they saw because
- 10:03Speaker 3: he's a tall corner. Maybe can't flip the hips well off,
- 10:07Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, they had some things they
- 10:09Speaker 3: wanted to do.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And I know, but I will say this, the Goddard
- 10:14Speaker 2: plays other than the two touchdowns, and they were schemed
- 10:17Speaker 2: as well. But the thirty two yard or the fourteen
- 10:20Speaker 2: yarder I mentioned. I'm sure you're going to show the
- 10:21Speaker 2: thirty two yarder because that came out a pony. Those
- 10:26Speaker 2: were schemed plays where he was the recipient. In other words,
- 10:29Speaker 2: they weren't one on one matchup where they said let's
- 10:31Speaker 2: get Dallas Goddard matched on a place they were schemed plays.
- 10:36Speaker 2: He was the recipient, and for all we know, they
- 10:38Speaker 2: wanted him to be the recipient, you know, and they said, hey,
- 10:40Speaker 2: we can do this with Dallas Goddard. But it wasn't
- 10:42Speaker 2: like they said, oh, we're going to get Dallas Goddard
- 10:45Speaker 2: on Jamal Adams, you know, like they went into the
- 10:47Speaker 2: game like that.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Sure, but they did take advance, but they no question
- 10:51Speaker 3: and we don't know the answer to that because they
- 10:53Speaker 3: were not in their meetings.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but they did a good job of that.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So the only I won't even call it a negative,
- 10:58Speaker 1: but if you were looking for something a little bit
- 11:00Speaker 1: more against the Raiders, the only thing I would ask
- 11:04Speaker 1: you about Greg is obviously the running game was still
- 11:07Speaker 1: very sporadic. There were a few good yeah Parkie runs,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but there were also a lot of negatives and zeros
- 11:12Speaker 1: and ones. And then I thought the interior line at times,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and I was at the game, so I had a
- 11:16Speaker 1: pretty good angle. I thought they struggled to make certain
- 11:18Speaker 1: blocks that they've made throughout the year. Did you see
- 11:21Speaker 1: that as well. Not as much was passed, but at.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Times, yeah, and I think the run game it was
- 11:28Speaker 2: still sporadic, but I thought there were times where it,
- 11:31Speaker 2: you know, starts to show up a little bit. Obviously,
- 11:33Speaker 2: they were in a position quite frankly, where they could
- 11:36Speaker 2: practice it because of the nature of the score. And no,
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm being honest, You're right they probably wanted to be
- 11:41Speaker 2: in that position because Barkley had twenty plus a big
- 11:44Speaker 2: Bigsby had what seventeen I believe, And you know, full disclosure,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I didn't watch till the very very end, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 2: once the score got out of hand, So you know,
- 11:54Speaker 2: I did just watch McKee's three throws because I just
- 11:56Speaker 2: wanted to see what the concepts were. But other than that,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I didn't watch every Bigsby run, you know, when it
- 12:01Speaker 2: was totally out of hand. But he, by the way,
- 12:04Speaker 2: when he played in the regular part of the game,
- 12:05Speaker 2: he does look quick. And I'm being totally honest with
- 12:09Speaker 2: just what I see. He looks quicker than Barkley.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I feel like they're both similar in that they both
- 12:15Speaker 1: will give you a really nice looking run. But I mean,
- 12:18Speaker 1: even Bigsby on seventeen runs average three point four carries,
- 12:22Speaker 1: so no, no, he even he gets those hip behind
- 12:25Speaker 1: the line.
- 12:27Speaker 2: They number that lowers the number four. The run game
- 12:30Speaker 2: is still not what they want it to be, but
- 12:31Speaker 2: at least they got some good practice with it and
- 12:34Speaker 2: hopefully it just keeps getting better and better. Look, they're
- 12:37Speaker 2: not going to be ahead against good you know good.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Look they're playing Washington. Washington's not a great team, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: we now know Mariota is going to play the rest
- 12:44Speaker 2: of the season, you know, and their defense. Quite frankly,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Washington has struggled a good part of the season. It
- 12:49Speaker 2: hasn't been anywhere near as good as probably many thought
- 12:52Speaker 2: it might be. So who knows what the next number
- 12:55Speaker 2: of games? I mean, what do they have? Three games left? Right? Two?
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah to Washington and one Buffalo correct yeah, yeah, So
- 13:04Speaker 2: I mean who knows. But the bottom line is, you
- 13:07Speaker 2: know that it was good to be able to run
- 13:10Speaker 2: the ball with the volume. They didn't quite I'm sure
- 13:12Speaker 2: get the overall production that they're still looking for, but
- 13:15Speaker 2: it was good to be able to run the ball
- 13:17Speaker 2: with volume.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Hey, I still like a good night out, but I'm

- 16:59Speaker 1: All right, le's take a look at some of the
- 17:00Speaker 1: clips here Greg that we've cut up. We're gonna look
- 17:03Speaker 1: at the first touchdown the Gottter, Yeah, first one. And
- 17:07Speaker 1: I know you you made some observations on the old
- 17:09Speaker 1: line that and the personnel grouping here that set this up.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So what look at Yeah, And the whole point of
- 17:15Speaker 2: running a play like this is you know you want
- 17:18Speaker 2: this to look like a run. I mean, you know
- 17:22Speaker 2: which it does. It's a shovel pass off gap scheme
- 17:24Speaker 2: run action to the wide side of the field. Goddard
- 17:27Speaker 2: looks like the rapper following steam the puller. And I thought,
- 17:31Speaker 2: my a lot, I had a really strong play side
- 17:32Speaker 2: one on one block on Butler here. It's a really
- 17:35Speaker 2: well designed low red zone concept. They're not the only
- 17:38Speaker 2: team that runs it, but I thought they executed it really,
- 17:41Speaker 2: really well. This looks like a run, and you know,
- 17:44Speaker 2: you get you get the reaction that you want because
- 17:48Speaker 2: you'll see, I forget which stack Packer is, but he
- 17:50Speaker 2: goes he widens with Barkley. You'll see that because you know,
- 17:56Speaker 2: as you play it, you'll see, oh it's Roberts. Look
- 17:59Speaker 2: how he why out with Barkley because it looks like
- 18:02Speaker 2: a run to him. And by the way, Robert Tenner,
- 18:03Speaker 2: very good game, believe it or not. Yes, yeah, you know,
- 18:06Speaker 2: but he widens out and now he's not in the hole.
- 18:09Speaker 2: You know, that's that's why you do this. You know,
- 18:12Speaker 2: you don't just say, oh, shovel pass to Goddard. There's
- 18:15Speaker 2: a whole scheme, schematic element to it. And you see
- 18:18Speaker 2: the really good block by my a lotta one on
- 18:20Speaker 2: one right there. That yeah, that Goddard is able to
- 18:24Speaker 2: work right off and get into the end zone. They
- 18:26Speaker 2: got the reaction that they want from the radis you
- 18:28Speaker 2: really well scheme? You know rid zone play. I mean
- 18:30Speaker 2: for years and years you've seen the Chiefs do this
- 18:31Speaker 2: with Kelsey was just thinking of that one. God, you
- 18:34Speaker 2: know this is this is a good play in the
- 18:36Speaker 2: low rid zone.
- 18:37Speaker 1: By the way, I thought it was. You who said,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you know, you were a little surprised that Egales don't
- 18:40Speaker 1: run as much gap scheme with their struggles. Look at
- 18:43Speaker 1: Steen and look what they did on the first series.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mentioned at a thirteen personnel they had, you know,
- 18:49Speaker 2: they had the gap scheme runs.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and that's a good block by Maldel.
- 18:52Speaker 1: But Steen has his guy going into the end zone.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, the way there, So just to take
- 18:57Speaker 1: a look at it. At the handoff, there's the and
- 19:00Speaker 1: of course it's Steven White, who I know he got
- 19:02Speaker 1: yelled at by Max crlsby the tunnel.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and look at White as well. He widens
- 19:08Speaker 2: out and keeps out of the play. I mean that's
- 19:11Speaker 2: you know, the scheme worked. The scheme works. It's beautiful,
- 19:14Speaker 2: it's you know, yeah, I'm a big believer as Ben Jonson.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I've heard him speak in scheming in the red zone
- 19:20Speaker 2: as opposed to just you know, one on one throws.
- 19:23Speaker 2: You know, I like that better.
- 19:25Speaker 1: All right, more Goddard, this is the flood concept. I
- 19:27Speaker 1: wanted to show this for a couple of reasons, but this.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Is the one the early in the third quarter, right.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Thirty two yard yeapy, something that we did talk about
- 19:38Speaker 1: a little bit last weekend that they were starting to
- 19:40Speaker 1: do more of against the Chargers, these past concepts flooding,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and this.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Came out of twelve, not pony. This came out of twelve, right, so,
- 19:47Speaker 2: and it's conventional play action, meaning Hurts is under center
- 19:50Speaker 2: here and you know, they still don't do a lot
- 19:53Speaker 2: of it. Maybe maybe we believe they should do more
- 19:56Speaker 2: of it. You know, they'll decide that. But this is
- 19:58Speaker 2: your basic flood cont if just so people understand what
- 20:01Speaker 2: that is. It means there's three levels to one side
- 20:04Speaker 2: of the field. This time it's to the wide side,
- 20:06Speaker 2: so you have a vertical route, an intermediate route, and
- 20:09Speaker 2: a short route. And if you get zone coverage, it's
- 20:11Speaker 2: very difficult to cover. And exactly what they get here?
- 20:15Speaker 2: Did you not?
- 20:15Speaker 3: Because they run a ton of motion, I believe the
- 20:18Speaker 3: most they've run in any game. Did you think it
- 20:20Speaker 3: was meaningful?
- 20:20Speaker 2: Did it? Did you?
- 20:21Speaker 1: Do?
- 20:21Speaker 2: You feel like it worked pretty well?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Well?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Motion is always meaningful, you know, I'm not a believer
- 20:26Speaker 2: in oh, it's window dressing. Uh uh. Motion is always meaningful.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Even if nobody moves on the defense, Adam, that tells
- 20:33Speaker 2: you something gotcha. Teams don't run motion, you know, just
- 20:36Speaker 2: on a whim they run motion always meaningful?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Sure, all right, definitely yes, under center, which we see
- 20:44Speaker 1: more I'm going to freeze. Always see the three routes
- 20:46Speaker 1: develop here.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So right now it's perfect. So now what I really
- 20:51Speaker 2: like about this and what is really good about this,
- 20:53Speaker 2: and teams are doing more and more of this is
- 20:54Speaker 2: the intermediate route. The further inside it comes from, the
- 20:59Speaker 2: better it is, because it's really a flat defender read
- 21:03Speaker 2: in zone coverage. And the further inside it comes from
- 21:07Speaker 2: the intermediate route. Snowden, by the way, is the flat
- 21:10Speaker 2: defender here, and he's he's really a d end Our
- 21:14Speaker 2: stand up outside background. He's not really a pass defender.
- 21:18Speaker 2: But the point I'm making is the further inside it
- 21:20Speaker 2: comes from, the less likely it's to be in the
- 21:23Speaker 2: vision of the flat defender. Right, So therefore it's just
- 21:26Speaker 2: a flat defender read because if the flat defender happened
- 21:29Speaker 2: to see Goddard and he dropped with depth the word
- 21:33Speaker 2: we use this, If he sinks with depth, then you're
- 21:36Speaker 2: throwing it in the flat. If he stays where he is,
- 21:38Speaker 2: you'll see how wide open it is. Because he's the
- 21:41Speaker 2: only one who can play this.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I also like that there are probably like three different
- 21:45Speaker 1: guys Jalen could have hit if he wanted to. I
- 21:47Speaker 1: mean it, this is the play well designed.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but this is a play.
- 21:51Speaker 1: You're looking you know what you like?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Greg?
- 21:53Speaker 1: Remember last week we saw a play where he could
- 21:55Speaker 1: have gone I think it was a flood where he
- 21:57Speaker 1: could have gone to DeVante deeper, but it was first down.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Just wanted the safe on here. He had the time, the.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Nine percent at the time, Jeff, you call this to
- 22:05Speaker 2: throw the intermediate route. Now, if by chance that corner
- 22:09Speaker 2: thought he was going to be a hero and decided
- 22:12Speaker 2: to totally drop off and play Goddard, well then you
- 22:15Speaker 2: got the sail route. But that rarely ever happens normally
- 22:19Speaker 2: that that route is just a clear route.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Look how open it was that happens.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It's pitching catch.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It's great when you designed it that way.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Right, it's a it's a route. It's a zone beater
- 22:32Speaker 2: route concept, not a man beater concept. It's a zone
- 22:34Speaker 2: beater concept.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Right, Okay, this will be next one. I wanted to
- 22:38Speaker 1: look at Barkley's seventeen yeard run because Lattu is in.
- 22:41Speaker 2: On the planet.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think we saw this formation. You mentioned a couple
- 22:43Speaker 1: of times under center split you. Well, you have two
- 22:46Speaker 1: tight ends to the left and there's a Lot two
- 22:48Speaker 1: who's offset. He's going to cross the line of scrimmage.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the same run that they ran on
- 22:53Speaker 2: the Eagles first possession. This looks like thirteen, right, it's thirteen.
- 22:58Speaker 2: It's the same. Yet it's it's thirteen personnel. They ran this. Uh, basically,
- 23:03Speaker 2: this gap scheme run twice on their first possession, so
- 23:06Speaker 2: they just came back to it. It's it's you know,
- 23:08Speaker 2: this is gap scheme. So a lot too crosses the formation.
- 23:12Speaker 2: He's the kickout blocker, you see him. Here's the rule, guys,
- 23:16Speaker 2: Just so people understand, a Lot two's job is to
- 23:18Speaker 2: kick out the widest defender on the ball. You know,
- 23:21Speaker 2: people say kick out the d N. Well it doesn't
- 23:23Speaker 2: have to be the d N. Depends what the defense does.
- 23:25Speaker 2: It's the widest defender on the ball, and then the rapper.
- 23:29Speaker 2: That's the term they use for Dickerson. He's the rapper.
- 23:32Speaker 2: He's going to block the first defender that shows, be
- 23:36Speaker 2: a linebacker, could be a safety, you know, it's the
- 23:40Speaker 2: first defender that shows and that's what happens here. It
- 23:44Speaker 2: happens to be Jeremy Chin here. So this is this
- 23:47Speaker 2: is a beautiful, well executed gap scheme run and you
- 23:51Speaker 2: expect Barkley, that's the other linebacker you know, from the
- 23:54Speaker 2: backside who's coming over to try to make the play.
- 23:57Speaker 2: That's Roberts. You expect Barkley to be able to you know,
- 24:00Speaker 2: to beat that.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely nice to see. And Barkley ship shook out
- 24:04Speaker 1: of the tackle too, So you got yards now.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Actually, actually here is the double teams if you go
- 24:12Speaker 2: back a little, Jeff, Yeah, the double team by My,
- 24:14Speaker 2: Alotta and Steen. One of those guys has to come
- 24:18Speaker 2: off and get Roberts. Roberts is the backside linebacker. One
- 24:21Speaker 2: of those guys has to has to block him. If
- 24:24Speaker 2: he goes inside then not Steen, excuse me, it's Goddard
- 24:28Speaker 2: and My and and Johnson. Yeah, So what happens here
- 24:33Speaker 2: is if he goes inside, Johnson has to get him.
- 24:35Speaker 2: If he goes outside, Goddard's got to come off and
- 24:37Speaker 2: get him.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So got it early. Should have come off there.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Huh. Well, Roberts is not defining where he's going at
- 24:43Speaker 2: the moment, so it's a little tough don't forget. It's
- 24:45Speaker 2: happening fast, yes, very fast. Right, and if he by
- 24:48Speaker 2: the way, if he decides to go over the top
- 24:50Speaker 2: of it like he did, then you can on your
- 24:52Speaker 2: back to beat him because he's he's he's seven six
- 24:55Speaker 2: seven yards off the ball, right.
- 24:57Speaker 1: So by the way, we got right here, yards before
- 25:00Speaker 1: we're contact.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Just pass the line. There you go, there you go.
- 25:03Speaker 1: And now we have yards after contact because he shakes
- 25:06Speaker 1: out of a couple of an ankle tackle and then
- 25:08Speaker 1: drags a couple of guys after. That's good, all right,
- 25:11Speaker 1: last player gonna look at. I thought this was as
- 25:14Speaker 1: good of a throw, you know last year. Last week
- 25:16Speaker 1: we talked about the throat of DeVante Smith on third
- 25:19Speaker 1: and long. That was beautiful. I thought this was as
- 25:21Speaker 1: beautiful as a throw as Jonas made all year. Greg
- 25:24Speaker 1: got the touchdown to a J.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Brown, Oh, the twenty seven yard touchdown. So this came
- 25:28Speaker 2: out of this is the one that came out of
- 25:30Speaker 2: twenty two Pony Shipley has a plus split outside of
- 25:34Speaker 2: Brown to the field. Now, the reason this is impressive
- 25:38Speaker 2: is the raiders out of they're in base, so you
- 25:40Speaker 2: know you're going to get zone. They're not going to
- 25:43Speaker 2: play man in bays. Very few teams do. So they
- 25:46Speaker 2: went cover three and the post safety Polomios cheated outside
- 25:49Speaker 2: the hash to the trips side of the formation. So
- 25:53Speaker 2: that's you know, that's that's the critical piece here is
- 25:56Speaker 2: where he is because if he's if he was cheated
- 25:59Speaker 2: to the other you're not going to have this throw,
- 26:01Speaker 2: and then you might work to the other side. But
- 26:03Speaker 2: because of where he is, all Jalen does here is
- 26:06Speaker 2: as soon as he takes a snap, all he has
- 26:08Speaker 2: to do is take half a beat and just stare
- 26:10Speaker 2: at polo Io just to make sure he doesn't fly over.
- 26:13Speaker 2: And then, by the way, because it's cover three and
- 26:15Speaker 2: they're not carrying the seam, then this throw has to
- 26:19Speaker 2: beat the overlapping corner porter. That's who this throw has
- 26:22Speaker 2: to beat because Porter, as soon as Shipley goes inside,
- 26:26Speaker 2: it's his job to overlap the seam route. That's the
- 26:29Speaker 2: way it's taught, and so this throw has to beat him.
- 26:32Speaker 2: So there's a timing element to this throw. It's a
- 26:35Speaker 2: timing throw, not anticipation. It's more timing. It's timing, right,
- 26:39Speaker 2: so you see when he started his delivery, so and
- 26:44Speaker 2: is because he knows where Mayo is all the way
- 26:47Speaker 2: in their side. Notice how he bends Brown further inside.
- 26:51Speaker 2: A great job by Jalen here to take him away
- 26:54Speaker 2: from Porter. If he let him straight up the field,
- 26:58Speaker 2: Porter can get involved in the play. So this is
- 27:01Speaker 2: how many.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Many levels, this is what Jalen needs to do a
- 27:04Speaker 3: better job right there with phenomenal we the past target.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Make him go forward, don't let him slow up. Yeah,
- 27:10Speaker 3: that's high level quarterback play. I don't care how Like.
- 27:13Speaker 2: That's a great job by Jalen because that he bent
- 27:17Speaker 2: him bend it bent him inside, because you know, that's
- 27:21Speaker 2: port of responsibility to overlap that.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yep, that was beautiful. And you know he struggled with
- 27:27Speaker 1: ball placement at times this year in a strange way
- 27:29Speaker 1: because he's always been good with ball placement. This year
- 27:33Speaker 1: struggled a little bit. We saw that even last week
- 27:35Speaker 1: and the week before. I would say, though, it doesn't
- 27:38Speaker 1: surprise me that he threw that beautiful old pass on
- 27:40Speaker 1: a day where in general he was connected, like he
- 27:43Speaker 1: had it going and he felt good. Confidence is a
- 27:45Speaker 1: big part of the position. He threw that confidently.
- 27:48Speaker 2: We've sawd for years about his strengths and limitations, but
- 27:51Speaker 2: he's an NFL quarterback. I mean, you know, you know,
- 27:54Speaker 2: it's funny. The one thing that I that I get
- 27:57Speaker 2: all the time on social media, you know when I
- 27:59Speaker 2: when I talk about a quarterback, because there's strengths, there's limitations.
- 28:03Speaker 1: You know.
- 28:03Speaker 2: I had a former GM who was in the office
- 28:05Speaker 2: with me this past Friday. Guy I know, well he's
- 28:08Speaker 2: he's retired now, but you know, he just blows a
- 28:10Speaker 2: ball and he doesn't have access to coaching tape. He
- 28:12Speaker 2: came to visit and you know, we just talked about
- 28:15Speaker 2: a lot of things. You know, when you're sitting with
- 28:16Speaker 2: a guy for three hours, you talk about a lot
- 28:18Speaker 2: of things, you know, and you know, even great players.
- 28:21Speaker 2: He was saying this not me, but I know this
- 28:22Speaker 2: too for much and tap he says, you know, all
- 28:24Speaker 2: players have strengths and all players have some limitations. So
- 28:28Speaker 2: you know, if you say that about a player, the
- 28:30Speaker 2: average fan, you know, oh you hate him, You're a hater.
- 28:32Speaker 2: That's not the way it is. You know, all these
- 28:34Speaker 2: guys have strengths. And you know that was a big
- 28:37Speaker 2: time NFL throw. You know, Jalen Hurts is a Super
- 28:39Speaker 2: Bowl champion. Does he have some limitations that we all
- 28:42Speaker 2: know about and have been discussed, you know, ad nauseum. Yes,
- 28:45Speaker 2: but I mean that was a big time throw. You know,
- 28:48Speaker 2: you got it. You gotta let the tape tell you
- 28:50Speaker 2: what it is. Of course two weeks agow a big
- 28:53Speaker 2: time throw.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So that's a look the numbers say that again number
- 28:59Speaker 1: he is throwing a little bit more so. Yeah, and
- 29:01Speaker 1: not to a guy who was absolutely wide open either.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I mean there were three by the time the ball.
- 29:06Speaker 2: That throw had to have excellent timing and really precise
- 29:08Speaker 2: ball location. That's why bending it inside was critical.
- 29:13Speaker 1: All Right, we'll see if the Eagles can capitalize the
- 29:15Speaker 1: follow on Saturday with their offense against the Washington Commanders.
- 29:19Speaker 1: That's going to do it. For looking at the tape
- 29:21Speaker 1: of the Eagles offense against the Raiders. Next edition will
- 29:24Speaker 1: go through their defense for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching Inside the Tape with
- 29:31Speaker 1: Greg Cosell.
