- 0:04Speaker 1: Better up.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Chris Kershner is joining us writes for The Athletic and
- 0:08Speaker 2: put out a good little article yesterday that we're about
- 0:10Speaker 2: to dive into. Chris. Great to have you on here,
- 0:12Speaker 2: and we called you as soon as we could when
- 0:15Speaker 2: we saw the article you put out with Ken Rosenthal
- 0:18Speaker 2: about the Yankees' interest in Edward Cabrera. But they're not
- 0:21Speaker 2: the only ones. What else can you tell us?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Yeah, so the Yankees do have interest in Edward Cabrera
- 0:27Speaker 3: with the Marlins, as Ken and I reported yesterday. A
- 0:30Speaker 3: couple of other teams are also in the mix, the
- 0:33Speaker 3: Mets and the Cubs. But last month at the Winter meetings,
- 0:37Speaker 3: Brian Cashman told reporters that he would quote love to
- 0:40Speaker 3: add another starting pitcher. As you guys probably know and
- 0:46Speaker 3: everybody watching, the Yankees are going to be without Garret Cole,
- 0:49Speaker 3: Carlos Rodin, and Clark Schmidt to begin the season as
- 0:52Speaker 3: they recover from their respective elbow surgery. So the Yankees'
- 0:56Speaker 3: rotation right now is pretty thin, and that's not even mentioned.
- 1:00Speaker 3: You know, the guys that they currently have on their
- 1:02Speaker 3: rotation who are coming off of career highs and workloads.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Max Freed Rodin is one of those guys too, Will
- 1:09Speaker 3: Warren and Cam Schlitler. So the Yankees are definitely in
- 1:13Speaker 3: the hunt for a starring pitcher. Cabrera is one of them,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and Ken and I also reported in that same article
- 1:19Speaker 3: that they are still talking to the Milwaukee Brewers about
- 1:23Speaker 3: Freddie Peralta.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Have they come off any of their previous statements from
- 1:27Speaker 1: previous offseasons or even trade deadlines of like, can't have
- 1:31Speaker 1: Spencer Jones, can't have Jason Dominguz because each year that
- 1:35Speaker 1: these players don't have the All Star season, does it
- 1:39Speaker 1: make them less valuable to other teams or less valuable
- 1:43Speaker 1: to the Yankees where they could trade them. Have there
- 1:46Speaker 1: been any words on those types of players and their
- 1:49Speaker 1: other prospects.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Well, they've had previous discussions about both of those guys
- 1:55Speaker 3: at trade deadlines and offseasons, Domingiez and Jones. You know,
- 2:00Speaker 3: they also remain in the mix to re sign Cody Bellinger,
- 2:03Speaker 3: and if they resign Bellinger to a long term contract,
- 2:07Speaker 3: one of those guys is likely going to be out
- 2:10Speaker 3: of the picture. It wouldn't be a surprise at all
- 2:14Speaker 3: to see either Domingez or Jones get traded. I probably
- 2:19Speaker 3: would not think that either of those guys would be
- 2:22Speaker 3: included in a possible Cabrera deal. But you know, with
- 2:26Speaker 3: Peralta being a frontline starter, it would not be a
- 2:29Speaker 3: surprise at all to see either Domingez or Jones in
- 2:33Speaker 3: a package to land Peralta. I'm not saying that's going
- 2:35Speaker 3: to happen, but I would not be stunned at all
- 2:38Speaker 3: if if one of those guys is not in the
- 2:41Speaker 3: Yankees organization by the start of spring training.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Wow, that's a big that's a big thing. But what
- 2:46Speaker 4: about a free agent the Yankees haven't one of the
- 2:49Speaker 4: Yankees is going to make a splash in free agency?
- 2:52Speaker 4: We keep hal Steinbrener said, they have no money, and
- 2:56Speaker 4: they haven't gone out and gotten a Tucker or a
- 2:58Speaker 4: Bellinger or anybody. I know they've resigned some of their guys,
- 3:02Speaker 4: but when are they gonna make that Yankee splash because
- 3:05Speaker 4: they're one of the teams that hasn't really made a
- 3:07Speaker 4: splash that we expect to.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the the Athletic paid for me to
- 3:12Speaker 3: go to Orlando and I had nothing to really write
- 3:15Speaker 3: about it.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Say Hi, you didn't even say hi. You didn't say
- 3:18Speaker 4: hi to us.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I'm sorry. Next time next time. But yeah, I mean,
- 3:22Speaker 3: the the Yankees are the only American League East team
- 3:25Speaker 3: to not make a notable external addition this offseason. You know,
- 3:30Speaker 3: they've seen the Blue Jays get much better. You know,
- 3:34Speaker 3: they they just signed Okamoto over the weekend. You know,
- 3:38Speaker 3: they remain in the mix to sign Kyle Tucker. But yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I mean the Yankees are you know, their main priority,
- 3:44Speaker 3: which is what they've been saying publicly, is to re
- 3:48Speaker 3: sign Cody Bellinger. They've not made that a secret. You know,
- 3:52Speaker 3: if they add one of these starters in Cabrera or Peralta,
- 3:55Speaker 3: I think that would be a really nice move for
- 3:57Speaker 3: the Yankees, but it's probably not satisfactory to you know,
- 4:02Speaker 3: the Yankee faithful. They are hoping that they get much
- 4:07Speaker 3: better from what they were this past season. And you know,
- 4:09Speaker 3: they got eliminated in the Alds by the Blue Jays.
- 4:13Speaker 3: The blue Jays had their number all season. You would
- 4:15Speaker 3: think that the Yankees would try to make bigger moves.
- 4:19Speaker 3: But you know one thing that they've been very clear
- 4:22Speaker 3: about basically since the season ended, both Brian Cashman and
- 4:26Speaker 3: Aaron Boone, is they think this roster is good. You know,
- 4:29Speaker 3: they have the same record as the Blue Jays do
- 4:32Speaker 3: I think that they're as good as the Blue Jays.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I don't, but you know, I'm not getting paid to
- 4:36Speaker 3: make those kinds of decisions. They feel like they have
- 4:39Speaker 3: a good roster and we'll see if they're correct in
- 4:41Speaker 3: twenty twenty six.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Does the missing not even missing? Didn't even really like
- 4:47Speaker 1: push hard on Emai? Is it more indicative of who
- 4:51Speaker 1: they're actually going after for starting pitching or more about
- 4:55Speaker 1: what Imai was going to bring to the table. And
- 4:57Speaker 1: because the price really was, isn't that high and I
- 5:01Speaker 1: thought he was Probably if they thought he was the
- 5:04Speaker 1: big fish for them, as Cashman has said before, are
- 5:07Speaker 1: white whale, then they would have gone after him and
- 5:11Speaker 1: gotten him based on how much pitching they're going to
- 5:13Speaker 1: need for the first three months of the season.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Well, I think the industry said what they thought of
- 5:20Speaker 3: em with that contract that he signed. I certainly thought
- 5:23Speaker 3: that he was going to get more money than what
- 5:25Speaker 3: he ended up signing with with the Astros three year,
- 5:27Speaker 3: sixty three million dollars. You know, I did have multiple
- 5:31Speaker 3: people with the Yankees early in the offseason expressed their
- 5:36Speaker 3: interest in Emi. Obviously they didn't. They ended up not
- 5:39Speaker 3: feeling similarly at the end when it came time to
- 5:44Speaker 3: sign him before his posting window expired. But I definitely
- 5:48Speaker 3: thought that it was a worthy person for them to
- 5:52Speaker 3: go after, especially considering the price. You know, if he
- 5:55Speaker 3: can realize his potential, that's a steal for Houston. And
- 6:00Speaker 3: you know, it's definitely you know that organization has done
- 6:04Speaker 3: a really good job of developing developing pitching over the
- 6:08Speaker 3: past several years in that but I was certainly surprised
- 6:11Speaker 3: that they didn't go after Emi. But if they end
- 6:13Speaker 3: up getting a Cabrera or Peralta, both of those guys
- 6:17Speaker 3: have shown that they can do well on the major
- 6:21Speaker 3: league level. We have no idea what Emi is going
- 6:22Speaker 3: to look like. Obviously we have some idea just with
- 6:26Speaker 3: how advanced the data is now over in Japan. But
- 6:31Speaker 3: I was definitely, very very surprised that they ended up
- 6:33Speaker 3: passing on him, especially at the number that he signed at.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Okay, you brought up Jason Dimingez and the other big
- 6:40Speaker 4: name is Spencer Jones with the Yankees. Which one of
- 6:43Speaker 4: these do you think they find more valuable. Jason Dimingez
- 6:45Speaker 4: has put up has gotten some at bats in the
- 6:47Speaker 4: big league. Spencer Jones hasn't really gotten that opportunity. So
- 6:50Speaker 4: which one of these do you think the Yankees find
- 6:52Speaker 4: more valuable and would be more reluctant to trade for
- 6:56Speaker 4: a player that they they might desperately need, like you said,
- 7:00Speaker 4: because their rotation is thin at the moment.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I've heard mixed reviews from their own organization regarding Spencer Jones,
- 7:08Speaker 3: So just that alone, I would imagine that they feel
- 7:12Speaker 3: that Dominguez has more value long term. Also, you have
- 7:17Speaker 3: to take into account that Dimingez is only twenty two
- 7:20Speaker 3: years old and he already has major league experience. You know,
- 7:25Speaker 3: he didn't have the season that I think many people
- 7:29Speaker 3: expected him to have. You know, he went into the
- 7:32Speaker 3: year with you know, a starting role basically guaranteed in
- 7:36Speaker 3: left field. You know, we did not know that Trent
- 7:39Speaker 3: Grisham was going to end up having the season that
- 7:41Speaker 3: he had, and he ended up taking uh Diminguz's playing
- 7:46Speaker 3: time essentially with him and center and then moving Bellinger
- 7:50Speaker 3: to left field. So we didn't expect that. But he
- 7:53Speaker 3: was still a slightly above league average hitter this past season. Domingez,
- 7:57Speaker 3: so I think he certainly has potential. He obviously has
- 8:01Speaker 3: to get better defensively, he was a disaster in left field,
- 8:05Speaker 3: one of the worst overall outfielders defensively this past year.
- 8:09Speaker 3: If he doesn't get better, then you wonder just where
- 8:13Speaker 3: he's going to fit long term. But with him being
- 8:16Speaker 3: twenty two, Spencer Jones being twenty five, striking out nearly
- 8:20Speaker 3: thirty three percent of the time in the minor leagues
- 8:23Speaker 3: this past season, I think it's pretty obvious that Domingez
- 8:26Speaker 3: has more value long.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Term bobas sheet. The Yankees have said that they were
- 8:33Speaker 1: or talking to him or have reached out. Is that
- 8:37Speaker 1: more of a make sure the next team, the Blue Jays,
- 8:41Speaker 1: or if the Red Sox have to pivot to him
- 8:44Speaker 1: pay the most, or is it something that there could
- 8:47Speaker 1: be a fit with other things moving around. If Boba
- 8:51Speaker 1: Schett were to sign with the Yankees.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Well, if Bellinger is their number one priority, I do
- 8:57Speaker 3: not think that they would be getting both Bellinger and Bushett.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It would be likely that Bishett would be a backup
- 9:06Speaker 3: option if Bellinger goes elsewhere, which I am not expecting.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I do think that eventually the Yankees and Bellinger will
- 9:15Speaker 3: agree to a new deal, But I've heard that the
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yankees interest in Boshett is really not even that solidified. Yes,
- 9:23Speaker 3: they've checked in. The one thing I will say about
- 9:26Speaker 3: checking in on free agents is it is the job
- 9:30Speaker 3: of the general manager to check in on everybody that's
- 9:33Speaker 3: out there. You know, they It doesn't mean that they're
- 9:36Speaker 3: necessarily one hundred percent interested in that player or going
- 9:41Speaker 3: to sign them. But you know, Brian Cashman is not
- 9:44Speaker 3: doing his due diligence if he doesn't check in to
- 9:47Speaker 3: see where Bischett's market is, which teams might be interested.
- 9:52Speaker 3: But you know, as of today, I don't think that
- 9:56Speaker 3: the Yankees and Bashett is a realistic possibility.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Okay, we got to ask about the scouting director or
- 10:04Speaker 4: the international Edgar Edgar Matteo getting dismissed so close to
- 10:08Speaker 4: the international signing? What do they call it deadline or
- 10:13Speaker 4: opening or whatever? The window whatever it's called right now?
- 10:17Speaker 4: Right the period?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, good points, gott period.
- 10:20Speaker 4: But is this a big deal for the Yankees? Are
- 10:22Speaker 4: they looking to go in a different direction? Why do
- 10:24Speaker 4: you make this move? You had a whole year basically
- 10:26Speaker 4: to do this. Why are they making this move so
- 10:28Speaker 4: close to the period.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so Edgar was the assistant to Donnie Roland. They
- 10:34Speaker 3: got rid of Donnie Roland a few weeks ago. Now,
- 10:37Speaker 3: Donnie had been in the organization for over a decade.
- 10:41Speaker 3: But you know, if you go through the Yankees international
- 10:45Speaker 3: free agents in the past several years now, there have
- 10:48Speaker 3: been numerous multi million dollar misses with the Yankees. They
- 10:53Speaker 3: just haven't really executed that portion of their organization as
- 10:58Speaker 3: well as they have hoped. You know, Domingez has been
- 11:02Speaker 3: their best international signing, and you know, the jerry is
- 11:05Speaker 3: still out on what kind of player Dimingez might be.
- 11:09Speaker 3: You know, they gave five million dollars to Roderick Arius
- 11:13Speaker 3: a few years ago, and he doesn't look like he's
- 11:16Speaker 3: going to be the kind of player that they thought
- 11:20Speaker 3: he would be. So if you go through just you know,
- 11:23Speaker 3: on Baseball America, some of the dollar figures that they
- 11:26Speaker 3: have given out over the past several years, there are
- 11:28Speaker 3: not many hits for the Yankees. They've signed Carlos Lagronje,
- 11:35Speaker 3: who's now one of their top pitching prospects. I believe
- 11:37Speaker 3: he got like ten thousand dollars a few years ago.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They've hit on some of those guys, like the lower
- 11:43Speaker 3: level guys. But when you're talking about international free agency,
- 11:47Speaker 3: especially for a team like the Yankees, who's never drafting
- 11:51Speaker 3: high in the draft. You have to make sure like
- 11:54Speaker 3: that part of your organization is as well as it
- 11:57Speaker 3: can be, and it's not. So that's why the Yankee
- 12:00Speaker 3: He's are now in the market for a director of
- 12:03Speaker 3: international and an assistant director. As you mentioned, they got
- 12:09Speaker 3: rid of Edgar a few days ago, but it's the
- 12:11Speaker 3: timing is not great because the international free agency period
- 12:15Speaker 3: opens on January fifteenth. You know, a few weeks ago
- 12:19Speaker 3: they lost their number one guy I do not know
- 12:22Speaker 3: how to pronounce his last name, wandhy Asi g e
- 12:26Speaker 3: N to the Mets. I think he signed for three
- 12:28Speaker 3: point six million dollars. I know several people in the
- 12:32Speaker 3: Yankees organization were very high on his potential. But you know,
- 12:36Speaker 3: those are the things that happen when you do make
- 12:39Speaker 3: those moves. You know, you look at college football when
- 12:41Speaker 3: coaches go elsewhere, some of those players end up hitting
- 12:44Speaker 3: the transfer portal. So it's no different here with international
- 12:48Speaker 3: free agency.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Hey Chris, thanks for jumping on with us. Great article,
- 12:53Speaker 2: going back to where we started here on the Yankees
- 12:56Speaker 2: looking at Cabrera and Freddie p and others. Thanks for
- 12:59Speaker 2: joining us, did yep, thanks for having me today's futures
- 13:02Speaker 2: pick for Bet MGM and L Rookie of the Year odds.
- 13:06Speaker 2: The top three here Nolan MacLean plus three forty, South
- 13:11Speaker 2: Stewart plus five hundred, Bubba Chandler plus seven hundred, Jj
- 13:15Speaker 2: Weatherholts also plus seven hundred, Moises balistais plus eight hundred,
- 13:18Speaker 2: Justin Crawford plus nine hundred, And then you know it
- 13:22Speaker 2: starts to get lengthy, or there anybody on there, and
- 13:24Speaker 2: there's a longer list that you guys have in your
- 13:27Speaker 2: little notes if you want to go further down the board.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Connor Griffin twelve hundred might be the last time you
- 13:33Speaker 1: see four four numbers behind his name. I think the
- 13:37Speaker 1: Pirates are making the moves that reminds me back of
- 13:41Speaker 1: when Fernando Tatis. Obviously they're not making the same big
- 13:46Speaker 1: moves like the Padres did, but Tatis in nineteen had
- 13:49Speaker 1: some veterans go in after during spring training and say,
- 13:53Speaker 1: this guy has to make the team. And I was
- 13:55Speaker 1: on the Giants and he made his debut that series
- 13:59Speaker 1: against against US. And obviously Tatis's you know, his career
- 14:04Speaker 1: has had some ups and downs, but there's there's electric
- 14:07Speaker 1: in there and Connor Griffin has shown he has that
- 14:11Speaker 1: same same electric not just ability on the field, but
- 14:16Speaker 1: also the fact that, like Pittsburgh's, a normal Pittsburgh team
- 14:20Speaker 1: would not have called him up until the until the
- 14:23Speaker 1: free agency whatever that window is. Now, with the extra
- 14:28Speaker 1: bonuses you get as a team, I think they'll be
- 14:31Speaker 1: less hesitant to make the move and go, look, we
- 14:34Speaker 1: won another year. We think you're ready. We see this
- 14:36Speaker 1: in you. You're our starting shortstop in the big leagues.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And I think anytime that happens, I think he's gonna
- 14:42Speaker 1: he's gonna hit the ground running. And you know, I
- 14:45Speaker 1: think it would be his his his award to lose.
- 14:49Speaker 2: He turns twenty in April, that would.
- 14:51Speaker 4: They give him a shot to make the team and
- 14:53Speaker 4: be the short stop. He'll probably win it, you think so,
- 14:55Speaker 4: I think I think his ae year old shortstop. I
- 14:57Speaker 4: think it's between him and I think Nolan McLain, with
- 14:59Speaker 4: what we saw from him with the Mets last year,
- 15:01Speaker 4: is the other guy if he stays healthy. Those are
- 15:03Speaker 4: the two I would rather put my money, like Kraut
- 15:05Speaker 4: said on Connor Griffin, just because the plus twelve hundred
- 15:07Speaker 4: is a better bet for me. I don't think Ballisterio
- 15:10Speaker 4: is gonna get another bets just In Crawford. I don't
- 15:12Speaker 4: know if he makes that team out of spring training.
- 15:14Speaker 4: He might, he might not tong and didn't impress me enough.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Bryce Eldridge tough play San Francisco to hit that hurts
- 15:22Speaker 4: mem Chandler. Are they gonna start him? Are they going
- 15:25Speaker 4: to pitch him out of bullpen? What are they gonna do?
- 15:27Speaker 4: Sal Stewart strikes out too much for me. I think
- 15:29Speaker 4: it's McLean and Griffin if he makes the team out
- 15:32Speaker 4: of spring training, those are the two for me.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I like value with Justin Crawford. I mean, you have
- 15:36Speaker 2: to keep an eye on maybe spring training.
- 15:38Speaker 4: The one thing about Justin Crawford that he has Ann McClain.
- 15:41Speaker 4: They play in big markets.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Wait, that helps you big markets A very good regular
- 15:46Speaker 2: season lineup where he can just slot right in. You're
- 15:48Speaker 2: gonna drive in a lot of runs, score a lot
- 15:50Speaker 2: of runs.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:51Speaker 2: He's an all around player, so the war should help him, defense, speed.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I think all of those things that up and Justin
- 16:01Speaker 2: Crawford has some value. I'm not saying he's gonna win,
- 16:03Speaker 2: but there's value there. And they waited. I mean, he's
- 16:06Speaker 2: this will be. It's not he's not old, but this
- 16:08Speaker 2: will be his age twenty two season. He's durning twenty
- 16:10Speaker 2: two this month. So I just like that play. I
- 16:12Speaker 2: think Justin Crawford could contribute because even if the bat's
- 16:14Speaker 2: not supreme, got good support around you, and other parts
- 16:17Speaker 2: of his game are gonna be good.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, but if he doesn't get off to a
- 16:20Speaker 4: good start, it's there's a lot.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But I agree, Yeah, I just don't. I think they're
- 16:24Speaker 2: leaving a spot open for him to be a somewhat
- 16:27Speaker 2: every day guy.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Okay, it's his Yeah, it's his spot to win or
- 16:31Speaker 1: I wouldn't say to lose. But he starts to win.
- 16:33Speaker 1: He stills to show he can elevate pitches. He hits
- 16:35Speaker 1: the ball hard. It's a lot on the ground. Everybody
- 16:38Speaker 1: got on me. No, he's a left fielder. They really
- 16:41Speaker 1: like what they see in centerfield, and I think they're
- 16:43Speaker 1: gonna give him a chance because they want had to
- 16:45Speaker 1: be the everyday guy and not platoon their center field position,
- 16:49Speaker 1: which will help in the Rookie of the Year stuff.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I'm with you, all right, bet. I'm jam players can
- 16:55Speaker 2: get in any sport parlay boost token to start off
- 16:58Speaker 2: the New year, right your payout. If you use that
- 17:01Speaker 2: and pair it up in your bet slit and activate
- 17:03Speaker 2: the token. If you win with that wager made with
- 17:06Speaker 2: the token, you get extra winnings. That's the simple way
- 17:10Speaker 2: of how parlay boost token works. Gambling problem or concern
- 17:13Speaker 2: call the one eight hundred gambler.
