- 0:12Speaker 1: as my trusty co host, Roman the Elder Harper.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Appreciate that, thanks, Peanut, even though you're older than me.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I want to jump right into our guests. I mean
- 0:21Speaker 2: we've already been talking.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Introduced who he is, First Ballot Hall of Famer, NFL
- 0:26Speaker 1: Top one hundred players, Walter Payton, Man of the Year
- 0:28Speaker 1: Award winner. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Anthony Munos to
- 0:32Speaker 1: the show.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Want to thanks having me. Thank you.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna just say this, like, I know who you are.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I played my thirteen years. I've seen you Super Bowls
- 0:42Speaker 1: and all the events that the league does, and having
- 0:46Speaker 1: done the research on you, I didn't know how dominant
- 0:50Speaker 1: you were. I don't pay attention to the lineman as
- 0:54Speaker 1: much per se because we I'm a dB, so I'm
- 0:57Speaker 1: you know, receivers maybe uh maybe tight ends.
- 0:59Speaker 4: But like you was, you were a dog.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Like you were you were, you were great.
- 1:05Speaker 3: You were.
- 1:05Speaker 4: He told me this this morning.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It was like, with all due respect, I said, dude,
- 1:09Speaker 2: he's considered the best tackle.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Of all I know. I just didn't just paid attention. Obviously,
- 1:14Speaker 4: I did.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I appreciate that our follows your son when he was
- 1:17Speaker 2: at college on meers.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Thank.
- 1:21Speaker 5: I appreciate that, And I mean it's still very humbling.
- 1:23Speaker 5: I mean, you know, I'm an old guy. You know,
- 1:25Speaker 5: I got I got a son your age, I got
- 1:27Speaker 5: grandkids are in high school, and uh, you know, I
- 1:30Speaker 5: still pinch myself. I live in Cincinnati, so it's a
- 1:32Speaker 5: three hour drive to Canton. Uh, and I've been in
- 1:34Speaker 5: twenty seven years, and I still pinch myself every time.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I drive up.
- 1:38Speaker 5: I have to watch it because I daydream a little
- 1:39Speaker 5: bit while I'm driving, you know, about coming up and
- 1:41Speaker 5: being with all the guys, and uh, thinking about the
- 1:44Speaker 5: guys I've I've gotten to know over the years that
- 1:46Speaker 5: are no longer with us when I got in. You know,
- 1:48Speaker 5: it's just one of those things where my wife and
- 1:50Speaker 5: I we got married my sophomore in college, where we
- 1:53Speaker 5: knew each other when I was in high school in
- 1:55Speaker 5: our hometown, and you know, we both just kind of say, man,
- 1:58Speaker 5: this is this is unbelievable that to be able to
- 2:00Speaker 5: come up here.
- 2:01Speaker 3: So I played thirteen years in the league.
- 2:03Speaker 5: After I retired, we moved we moved into built a
- 2:06Speaker 5: new house, and that was thirty two years ago. And
- 2:09Speaker 5: I found my freshman playbook from USC that was, you know,
- 2:13Speaker 5: seventeen years after I left USC. I found this freshman
- 2:17Speaker 5: my freshman playbook, and I said, I'm going to read
- 2:19Speaker 5: through it to see what kind of plays we ran. Well,
- 2:21Speaker 5: I knew we ran student body right, student body left,
- 2:23Speaker 5: student body right.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Call it student body back then.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Well, no, we called it twenty eight. But everybody that
- 2:28Speaker 3: was the name, name, that was the name.
- 2:29Speaker 5: But I opened it up in the first page, just
- 2:33Speaker 5: written in block letters, just one word on that first
- 2:35Speaker 5: page said dominate. Opened the next page and said, we
- 2:40Speaker 5: will dominate our opponent the first play of the game,
- 2:43Speaker 5: and they will give up by the end of the third,
- 2:45Speaker 5: early fourth quarter. So that's how I was trained in college.
- 2:49Speaker 5: And the pros had the same line coach for thirteen years.
- 2:52Speaker 5: We had shirts at camp that said finished. You know,
- 2:55Speaker 5: play goes from the snap to the whistle, absolutely, And
- 2:58Speaker 5: I understand some defensive line don't like to go to
- 3:01Speaker 5: the end. And we were like, let's see how many
- 3:04Speaker 5: times we can make those d line have to get
- 3:07Speaker 5: off the ground. But that was our whole philosophy, not
- 3:09Speaker 5: that it's going to happen every play, but that was
- 3:11Speaker 5: our attitude. And I talk about you know, I still
- 3:13Speaker 5: coach sometimes and talk about old line play and it's
- 3:16Speaker 5: all about one word attitude. If you have the attitude
- 3:20Speaker 5: attitude to dominate, you're gonna get out there and that's
- 3:23Speaker 5: going to be your primary goal. And that's why I
- 3:25Speaker 5: was taught and not only in football, but I have
- 3:28Speaker 5: two older brothers. They taught me to do that in life.
- 3:31Speaker 5: Baseball is my first love. I started playing baseball at
- 3:33Speaker 5: seven years old and I was going to be a
- 3:36Speaker 5: Major League baseball player. And then my brothers took me
- 3:38Speaker 5: under their winging man and it was like I competed
- 3:41Speaker 5: with them two years older, eight years older. And that's
- 3:44Speaker 5: what they taught me. They said, don't you don't have
- 3:45Speaker 5: to talk. Don't talk about your game. If your game
- 3:48Speaker 5: is good enough, people will.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Talk about it.
- 3:50Speaker 5: So that's a little that I know. I was learning
- 3:52Speaker 5: humility at the age of seven. Yeah, but that was
- 3:54Speaker 5: my approach and that's everything I do. I'm gonna let
- 3:56Speaker 5: what I do, my body will work speak for itself.
- 3:59Speaker 5: So I appreciate you guys saying them.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I want to just applaud you because you mentioned all
- 4:03Speaker 2: these things. And I've been doing a lot of reading
- 4:05Speaker 2: this off season for myself for growth purposes. And you
- 4:09Speaker 2: truly learned that you are a product of your whole environment.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's not just the college you choose. It's usually your upbringing,
- 4:16Speaker 2: you your birth order, you being the youngest of two
- 4:18Speaker 2: older brothers, trying to keep up, Like, all these things
- 4:21Speaker 2: kind of make you who you are at the end
- 4:23Speaker 2: of the day. The reason why you want to dominate, oh,
- 4:26Speaker 2: is college what I learned? And you were on the
- 4:30Speaker 2: national championship baseball team at Southern Cal Like because you
- 4:34Speaker 2: maybe tell us some stats we couldn't find them, give
- 4:37Speaker 2: us a breakdown. I saw you with a bat. You're
- 4:40Speaker 2: on the website. I mean, you look like a huge
- 4:42Speaker 2: guy in the batter's box. But this is great. Maybe
- 4:45Speaker 2: he kind of tell us about that story because you
- 4:47Speaker 2: have some really good players and teammates on that team
- 4:49Speaker 2: as well.
- 4:49Speaker 3: You know, it's interesting.
- 4:50Speaker 5: So I always wanted to play baseball, and you know,
- 4:53Speaker 5: at six six, three hundred a senior in high school,
- 4:55Speaker 5: I tell people, you know, football is going to be
- 4:57Speaker 5: my meal plan, and that was going to be my
- 4:59Speaker 5: way out of Ontario, California. But I wanted to make
- 5:02Speaker 5: sure that I could continue to play baseball in college
- 5:04Speaker 5: because I loved it. I was a third basement pitcher
- 5:06Speaker 5: at two seventy five and USC. It wasn't only a
- 5:10Speaker 5: recruiting pitch. They had done that with a lot of
- 5:13Speaker 5: guys prior to me going there, so I mean pretty
- 5:16Speaker 5: much a done deal once USC came after me. But
- 5:18Speaker 5: the crazy thing about it is that in four years
- 5:21Speaker 5: at USC had three knee operations freshman year, junior year,
- 5:24Speaker 5: senior year. The only healthy year I played in football
- 5:26Speaker 5: was my sophomore year, and that was the year I
- 5:28Speaker 5: played baseball because I was rehabbing the other three years.
- 5:31Speaker 5: So I went out and I was my sophomore year
- 5:33Speaker 5: in school, but I was a freshman in baseball, so
- 5:35Speaker 5: they looked at me as a relief pitcher, so I
- 5:37Speaker 5: get out there. When I went home my fresh after
- 5:40Speaker 5: my freshmanyear, I played little summer baseball just to keep
- 5:42Speaker 5: throwing the ball. So I went in there and on
- 5:44Speaker 5: the side, I was getting my arm in shape and
- 5:46Speaker 5: they were letting me play a little first base. Little
- 5:48Speaker 5: DH played a couple that was back there at JV team,
- 5:50Speaker 5: so I played two to three games on the JV team.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Then they moved me up to the varsity.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And you know, I was hitting the ball pretty well,
- 5:57Speaker 5: but once my arm got into shape, I was in
- 5:59Speaker 5: the pen.
- 6:00Speaker 3: No more hitting.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I was a fungo hitter, you know, hitting the outfielders,
- 6:03Speaker 5: which was fine. So we were loaded. I mean, we
- 6:06Speaker 5: won the World Series. We you know, we went to
- 6:08Speaker 5: Omahan and just swept everything. The entire team got drafted,
- 6:12Speaker 5: and I'm thinking there was two of us, two freshmen
- 6:13Speaker 5: on the pitching staff. Man, I'm gonna get a lot
- 6:15Speaker 5: of time next year. Then I get hurt again. But
- 6:18Speaker 5: so stats, you know, it was the only year I played,
- 6:21Speaker 5: so I had one win. We're in Texas during Easter.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Starting pitcher takes the line driving the arm, so I
- 6:25Speaker 5: warm up, I pitch, I get the win. So I
- 6:28Speaker 5: was want to know in college, uh, And I didn't
- 6:30Speaker 5: know my stats either. I know that that was the
- 6:33Speaker 5: first time that I threw a fastball and it hit
- 6:35Speaker 5: the parking lot over the fence faster and it got
- 6:39Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, I guess I'm in the big times.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But I think I threw like eleven or twelve innings
- 6:44Speaker 5: and had like thirteen strikeouts. But the thing is, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 5: I was undefeated, so I was wanting to know. But
- 6:51Speaker 5: and like I said, the team was loaded. I still
- 6:53Speaker 5: have contact with a lot of those teammates. I mean
- 6:55Speaker 5: there was number one picks for the Giants. There was
- 6:57Speaker 5: you know, you Chill the outfielders for the Astros, and
- 7:00Speaker 5: all star catcher for the Twins, and you know, so
- 7:03Speaker 5: there was a lot of great guys. In fact, our
- 7:04Speaker 5: stud pitcher was a left hander. He played two years
- 7:07Speaker 5: at SC than he was number one pick for the
- 7:08Speaker 5: Giants twenty six and two at SC's two years.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Oh now, you're so close to it.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Tell me the biggest difference from like, because I know
- 7:20Speaker 2: we all have our own little things that we'd like.
- 7:22Speaker 4: To do before the games. We talked to John Superstitions.
- 7:25Speaker 4: The Superstittion got you between baseball and football. I know
- 7:28Speaker 4: baseball has.
- 7:29Speaker 3: More, right Yeah, oh yeah, that's tell me the.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Biggest difference in the locker rooms going from football to
- 7:34Speaker 2: baseball locker rooms because it's got to be night day.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Well, first of all, baseball locker room is so much
- 7:41Speaker 5: more about stats. I mean, the guys are like fixated
- 7:44Speaker 5: about stats. They're all about stats. You know, and it's
- 7:48Speaker 5: I mean, I enjoyed that. I still have some great friends,
- 7:52Speaker 5: but football, to me is more. I think it's you
- 7:55Speaker 5: get more of a true brotherhood. I mean I got
- 7:58Speaker 5: some great friends from baseball, don't get me wrong, and
- 8:00Speaker 5: our locker room was great.
- 8:01Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Maybe it's because the physical aspect of the game and
- 8:05Speaker 5: the camps we go through. Uh, you know baseball, I
- 8:08Speaker 5: mean you get a good workout and it's a few
- 8:10Speaker 5: sprints after you throw a few you know. It's just yeah,
- 8:12Speaker 5: maybe that's the difference because it is such a physical
- 8:15Speaker 5: sport and you go through so much more in camp
- 8:18Speaker 5: than you do in baseball. But I noticed that guys
- 8:21Speaker 5: are constantly looking okay, it's my batt and ever maybe
- 8:23Speaker 5: that's I don't know, maybe that's the dB wide receiver thing.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 8:26Speaker 1: If we don't do that, I say that's probably the
- 8:35Speaker 1: biggest difference I noticed. Do you think baseball helped you
- 8:38Speaker 1: with football?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Definitely? I think all three sports.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I played football, basketball, and baseball in high school and
- 8:43Speaker 5: as a big kid. Think about it, I was a
- 8:45Speaker 5: third basement at two hundred and seventy five pounds. Now
- 8:48Speaker 5: I had I had to hit a ball twice as
- 8:50Speaker 5: far as my teammates to get around the bases. I
- 8:53Speaker 5: mean not until my senior year freshman did my speech start.
- 8:57Speaker 5: But you could not bun on me at two seventy five.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I could move forward later that you couldn't get the
- 9:02Speaker 5: line on me. I was blessed with being able to
- 9:04Speaker 5: sit down, yeah, and move. Think about that, sitting down
- 9:07Speaker 5: and moving at two seventy I was garden guys that
- 9:10Speaker 5: are one to seventy in basketball. If I had to
- 9:12Speaker 5: move my feet right football, what do you do as
- 9:15Speaker 5: an old lineman?
- 9:15Speaker 3: You sit down and you gotta move.
- 9:17Speaker 5: You gotta move, you gotta have you out in space
- 9:19Speaker 5: left tackle you got so Yeah. I think baseball really
- 9:22Speaker 5: helped me out, And I think that's why I'm such
- 9:24Speaker 5: a big and I know it's tough for now. I'm
- 9:26Speaker 5: so big on multiple sports guys, because you're working different muscles.
- 9:31Speaker 5: You know my age. I can still sit down in
- 9:33Speaker 5: that stin. I can't get up right away, but I
- 9:35Speaker 5: can still sit down like I needed to playing third, Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 5: and sit down like what I needed to when I
- 9:40Speaker 5: was pass blocking.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Why did you wear number seventy eight? You were number
- 9:44Speaker 2: seventy seven in college? Why did you wear number seventy eight?
- 9:48Speaker 3: Well, I got to Cincinnati.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I didn't have enough money to buy seventy seven from
- 9:52Speaker 5: the veteran offensive lineman reason. You know, you hear about that.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Guys get to another team and say I'll offer you
- 9:57Speaker 5: this much for that number. So seventy eight was available,
- 10:00Speaker 5: which is pretty cool because seventy eight. There's so much
- 10:03Speaker 5: significance in that number in that year. And you know,
- 10:06Speaker 5: I look back to college. I was a sophomore, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 5: in nineteen seventy eight, sophomore, you know, and then going
- 10:11Speaker 5: into my junior year.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You know, that was a year.
- 10:14Speaker 5: We got married in nineteen seventy eight, so we've been
- 10:17Speaker 5: married seventy year. Eight is a year, h I started
- 10:20Speaker 5: my spiritual journey, you know, That's when I trusted Jesus.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And it's been forty seven years, so that and you know,
- 10:27Speaker 5: so it was a lot of significance. And I'm thinking, Okay,
- 10:29Speaker 5: that's pretty cool number seventy eight. And of course I
- 10:32Speaker 5: was the one healthy year I played and I got
- 10:35Speaker 5: to throw this south there. I'm a big sec guy.
- 10:37Speaker 5: But on you you mentioned best road trip, and I
- 10:42Speaker 5: thought we would talk about I don't know if you
- 10:43Speaker 5: just meant overall or football. And I have to share
- 10:46Speaker 5: this with it was my junior year nineteen seventy eight,
- 10:49Speaker 5: week two best road trip we had. We ran student
- 10:52Speaker 5: body right, student body left all day long, twenty four
- 10:56Speaker 5: and we beat Alabama in Alabama.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I'm sorry the role with it that changed, that changed.
- 11:04Speaker 4: That was a big thing for us.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Oh man, I'll tell you what.
- 11:06Speaker 5: You guys were loaded in and then got loaded reloaded
- 11:09Speaker 5: again for many years.
- 11:10Speaker 4: But well, how fun was it?
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean because Alabama was not used to having teams
- 11:16Speaker 2: on the West coast come into briand.
- 11:17Speaker 5: It was huge because they came to Since or to
- 11:19Speaker 5: La my sophomore year, you know, so that started. So
- 11:23Speaker 5: twenty one to twenty we go make it and we
- 11:25Speaker 5: go for two. Of course, you know, we want to win.
- 11:28Speaker 5: So we didn't make it so because there was no overtime,
- 11:30Speaker 5: no overtime, so we lose twenty one twenty. Then we
- 11:32Speaker 5: go to Alabama and that was my sophomore year. I
- 11:35Speaker 5: tell people had a terrible year or nine to three.
- 11:37Speaker 5: We didn't go to Rose Bowl. So now we go
- 11:39Speaker 5: into you know Alabama.
- 11:40Speaker 1: My junior year, who was the head coach State in.
- 11:43Speaker 3: John Robinson, John Robinson, Okay, and then we go in
- 11:45Speaker 3: I mean, you.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Know, Dwight Stevenson and Marty Lyons, Barry Krause, I mean Tony,
- 11:49Speaker 5: I mean loaded, We had Marcus at fullback, Charles White,
- 11:53Speaker 5: we had Ronnie, Dennis Smith, Joey Brown.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So both teams were just like yeah, And so we go.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Down there and I'll never forget it, and I was
- 12:00Speaker 5: a week side tackle, so on student body, right, you.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Know, we flip flopped out me and the back.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Guard pulled and we pulled and it was the first
- 12:08Speaker 5: time I'd ever been exposed to humidity.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I like that.
- 12:16Speaker 5: But we ran that all day long and so that
- 12:19Speaker 5: was that was really pretty cool. I mean Bear Bryant
- 12:21Speaker 5: was still there, and I mean that was huge to
- 12:23Speaker 5: go into Alabama. So we split one on one and
- 12:26Speaker 5: uh but yeah, earlier I mentioned the SEC we went
- 12:29Speaker 5: to L s U.
- 12:30Speaker 3: That that uh that next year we went to L.
- 12:33Speaker 3: S U.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Baton Rouge, and I mean what an atmosphere there. So yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 5: I mean I had I had a blast, even though
- 12:38Speaker 5: I spent a lot of time rehabbiting college. I mean
- 12:40Speaker 5: some of the guys I played with are amazing. I
- 12:42Speaker 5: see four of them here in the Pro Football Hall
- 12:44Speaker 5: of Fame from my senior year team.
- 12:47Speaker 4: That's wild. Ain't anything wild?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Yeah? We had Ronnie A.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Lott, we had Marcus, Bruce Matthews and myself and off
- 12:55Speaker 5: that last team we had I think fifteen first round
- 12:58Speaker 5: picks and I mean we were It's pretty cool.
- 13:01Speaker 3: There's a lot of fun. Think about it.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Marcus Allen, our full back at about two hundred and
- 13:07Speaker 5: ten pounds maybe dripping wet.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I want to know, like, is it is it because
- 13:11Speaker 2: you think recruiting has changed so much because you had
- 13:15Speaker 2: a son and go through the Cole college experience, he
- 13:16Speaker 2: was highly recruited. You have grandkids now that are about
- 13:19Speaker 2: to get going through this stuff, right, I'm sure, And
- 13:22Speaker 2: so I know, like for you to have four Hall
- 13:26Speaker 2: of Famers on one team and any college now would
- 13:29Speaker 2: be in my mind, like I just don't see it,
- 13:31Speaker 2: Like talent is so much more spread out and so
- 13:34Speaker 2: back then, like was it just sc like that's you know.
- 13:37Speaker 5: While you had, oh, you had Ohio State, Notre Dame,
- 13:40Speaker 5: you had a handful. I think the difference now is
- 13:43Speaker 5: I look at my sophomore year when we didn't go.
- 13:45Speaker 3: To the Roseball.
- 13:46Speaker 5: We went to the Blue Bonnet Bone and played A
- 13:47Speaker 5: and M. Charles White was our starting tail back. He
- 13:50Speaker 5: had about one hundred and eighty yards that game. But
- 13:53Speaker 5: we had two backup running backs. One was probably the
- 13:55Speaker 5: fastest guy on the team, but he was hurt. One
- 13:58Speaker 5: of the guys had one hundred and fifty yards who
- 14:00Speaker 5: had been hurt but fast. See what happens now, if
- 14:03Speaker 5: you don't start, you're not there.
- 14:04Speaker 3: You leave lead.
- 14:05Speaker 5: We were three four deep when I was at SC.
- 14:08Speaker 5: That was back in the day. One hundred and thirty guys.
- 14:10Speaker 5: You know, because you didn't start your freshman year, you
- 14:13Speaker 5: didn't transfer right, you were there because you knew you
- 14:15Speaker 5: were going to compete and you win games. You know
- 14:17Speaker 5: you're going to go to roase. Well, I think that's
- 14:19Speaker 5: the difference. And of course I think.
- 14:21Speaker 1: That's killing the game. I was a college football. Do
- 14:23Speaker 1: you think that's hurt in college?
- 14:24Speaker 3: I don't know if it's hurting it, but it's it's strange.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I mean because now when kids are getting in the pros,
- 14:31Speaker 5: like right now, let's use an example.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I go back to La my wife and I there's five.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Couples that we get together with we'll go to dinner
- 14:39Speaker 5: on anniversaries or birthdays or just go to dinner. All
- 14:42Speaker 5: five guys we were offensive linemen as freshman at USC.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Four of us were married in college. One shortly after college. Now,
- 14:51Speaker 5: I mean, you introduced a guy in an NFL game,
- 14:55Speaker 5: he started this college, he went to that college.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Where do you hang your hat?
- 14:58Speaker 5: I mean, what guys do you hang with forty five
- 15:01Speaker 5: years later?
- 15:02Speaker 4: Huh?
- 15:03Speaker 3: You know so?
- 15:03Speaker 5: I think that's I mean, to me, that is so
- 15:06Speaker 5: special to be able to hang with guys that you
- 15:08Speaker 5: entered college with at seventeen, eighteen years old, that know you,
- 15:11Speaker 5: and that you might not see them every month of
- 15:14Speaker 5: the year, but you see them two three times a
- 15:16Speaker 5: year and you don't lose a beat.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I don't think they care about that though, at this
- 15:19Speaker 1: pointent in time, right now, I think it's a very
- 15:22Speaker 1: interesting perspective of how you put that. I just don't
- 15:25Speaker 1: think the young, the young fellows are really looking at that.
- 15:27Speaker 1: They're more about I mean, I get you, you're trying
- 15:30Speaker 1: to make money for a family.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Right exactly, and the better yourself.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I just don't think for the most part, they're worrying
- 15:34Speaker 1: about Oh yeah, at eighteen, I want to be able
- 15:37Speaker 1: to go to dinner with you when I'm sixty two
- 15:39Speaker 1: or no.
- 15:40Speaker 4: We have lived life, so we appreciate it.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yes, and it is a unique experience where you have
- 15:46Speaker 2: these bonds you know where man, we got drafted or
- 15:49Speaker 2: you know one of my teammates want a super Bowl
- 15:52Speaker 2: and it's like special and so and it is like
- 15:54Speaker 2: when you get back with these people. I also think
- 15:56Speaker 2: it's something to be said about having a home to
- 15:58Speaker 2: go back to.
- 15:59Speaker 4: You said, it's like, man, you're a se trojan. Yeah,
- 16:02Speaker 4: and so you rolle with him. You wrote, you know
- 16:05Speaker 4: what I mean, I'm Alabama.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I rolled right, so like you know when that's Ohio
- 16:08Speaker 2: State got wants to say something to me yesterday on
- 16:11Speaker 2: the golf course, like hold on, dog, you know what
- 16:13Speaker 2: I mean.
- 16:14Speaker 1: So I'm gonna just throw this story out. I'm a
- 16:16Speaker 1: thirty second story where we go golf in here, so
- 16:19Speaker 1: we should have went golfing with you all. Rome Is
- 16:22Speaker 1: Roman is teeing up his tea. He's getting ready and
- 16:24Speaker 1: he's got his Alabama bag, you know, his golf bag.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And this guy says something like, uh, you know they
- 16:31Speaker 1: got they have more bags. I got some Ohio State bags.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And if you know Rome, he's a happy lucky goo.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Just he laughs. He cries when he laughs. He crying
- 16:40Speaker 1: all the time. He's got a tears RT right now
- 16:41Speaker 1: because he's laughing, like the one of the happiest guys
- 16:44Speaker 1: I know. And he just kind of looks at him
- 16:46Speaker 1: and this mean serious face, was like, you ain't in
- 16:50Speaker 1: a competition, like but he said it so rude, and
- 16:53Speaker 1: I'm looking at him like, bro, what did you do?
- 16:55Speaker 1: And he was just like, man, you can't come with
- 16:57Speaker 1: me like that first thing in the morning talk about
- 16:58Speaker 1: my school.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Like I just filling that.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Bro, I ain't feeling that.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You can't.
- 17:01Speaker 1: You can't just writen me like that first thing in
- 17:02Speaker 1: the morning.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Man.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I was like, all right, man, I was like, he
- 17:06Speaker 1: gets testy when you talk about Alabama.
- 17:09Speaker 5: He gets But this is amazing. I love that story
- 17:12Speaker 5: because so I know so many of us. It's the
- 17:15Speaker 5: band for about colleges.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's anything you want about a protein.
- 17:20Speaker 4: I don't bother me.
- 17:21Speaker 3: It's like, you know, I get it.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Of course, being in Big ten country, it's like, don't
- 17:24Speaker 5: you wish you a Gundo house state? And now there's
- 17:27Speaker 5: my comeback, I said, you know, what by of Gundo
- 17:30Speaker 5: house state, I would have been oh for USC, I
- 17:34Speaker 5: would instead of being ten and oh against the Big ten.
- 17:36Speaker 5: As if we were at USC, I would, I wouldn't
- 17:39Speaker 5: beat the Pac twelve. And they're like, okay, I guess
- 17:42Speaker 5: you're happy at us.
- 17:44Speaker 3: So I get it.
- 17:45Speaker 4: I get it.
- 17:46Speaker 3: You know, you do it kind of in a joking way,
- 17:47Speaker 3: but it's like, hey, don't don't get that joking.
- 17:49Speaker 2: When I said he it was too early, it was like,
- 17:52Speaker 2: this was like third in the morning. Then yes, that's how.
- 17:54Speaker 4: We need so here.
- 17:56Speaker 5: So we're watching the National Championship game between the SEC
- 17:58Speaker 5: and the Big ten because our house and with it,
- 18:01Speaker 5: Ted Gen Junior runs an opening kickoff back but touch
- 18:04Speaker 5: that and they're like okay because my son, okay, see.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Where's all the steed?
- 18:09Speaker 5: After that, they didn't say a word the whole game
- 18:11Speaker 5: because I think they just smacked down.
- 18:13Speaker 4: It was like crazy, Yeah, it was funny. But the
- 18:16Speaker 4: big tim one the last last two, so that's true.
- 18:18Speaker 3: I give them the props.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Now we're going to take a short break and we'll
- 18:22Speaker 1: be right back. So we alluded to some of this
- 18:27Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. NFL Top one hundred player you know,
- 18:31Speaker 1: the NFL has been around since nineteen twenty and I
- 18:34Speaker 1: believe nineteen or I'm sorry, twenty twenties when they came
- 18:37Speaker 1: out with that team. And there's been thousands of players,
- 18:42Speaker 1: not just offensive lineman, there's been thousands of players that
- 18:45Speaker 1: have come through this league. And you were a top
- 18:49Speaker 1: one hundred player out of all the people that have
- 18:52Speaker 1: been in this league. What does that feel like like
- 18:55Speaker 1: when you got that? And I mean it's one thing
- 18:58Speaker 1: to get the gold jacket. Yeah, you got the maroon
- 19:00Speaker 1: like that, that that wine, Jackie.
- 19:03Speaker 4: What did that feel like?
- 19:04Speaker 3: I mean, it was amazing.
- 19:05Speaker 5: You know, we're down Miami for the Super Bowl and
- 19:07Speaker 5: they put us all in the same hotel.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I'm just walking around, but you're right.
- 19:10Speaker 5: I mean, we have three hundred and eighty two guys
- 19:12Speaker 5: in the Hall of Fame and there's just one hundred
- 19:14Speaker 5: guys in the all time hundred team. And you know,
- 19:16Speaker 5: the selectors were pretty impressive, I mean knowledgeable. So it's like, man,
- 19:21Speaker 5: so it was a compliment. I mean to be around
- 19:23Speaker 5: those guys, and you know, again, to me, I have
- 19:29Speaker 5: to look at the journey because I think about you know,
- 19:32Speaker 5: you have to do a look at my knees, and
- 19:33Speaker 5: you know the three knee operators in college. Playing one
- 19:36Speaker 5: game my senior year, got hurt, the first game surgery rehabit,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and I played in the Rose Bowl. That was the
- 19:41Speaker 5: only game I played. And everybody's saying, that's a great
- 19:44Speaker 5: way to end their career. Go on, find something else
- 19:47Speaker 5: to do. You know, you played in the Rose Bowl.
- 19:49Speaker 5: That's what you wanted to do with your guys. And
- 19:51Speaker 5: I said, well, I'm just going to keep busting it,
- 19:53Speaker 5: hopefully even as a free agent, because before my senior
- 19:56Speaker 5: year projected top ten.
- 19:58Speaker 3: After that third d.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Operation, free agent, maybe not even the chance. So I
- 20:02Speaker 5: just want a chance to get in an NFL camp.
- 20:04Speaker 5: I wanted to compete. I just want to see if
- 20:06Speaker 5: I could compete. And so thinking about Hall of Fame
- 20:10Speaker 5: top one hundred, I just think about that support group
- 20:13Speaker 5: earlier you mentioned, and I kind of took it as
- 20:16Speaker 5: self made. You know, people taught, and I laugh when
- 20:18Speaker 5: they say this self made guy, self made late and
- 20:21Speaker 5: then all of a sudden they get an accolade. They're
- 20:24Speaker 5: going to give a speech and they have like five
- 20:25Speaker 5: pages of people they're thinking, and I'm thinking, if you're
- 20:29Speaker 5: self made, don't you get up to the podium and
- 20:30Speaker 5: say I want to thank myself.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I want to thank myself.
- 20:33Speaker 5: I did a great job. But now they're thinking high
- 20:36Speaker 5: school teachers, aunts and uncles, and that's the same way.
- 20:39Speaker 5: I mean, I'm thankful for the medical staff, the training staff,
- 20:42Speaker 5: my college teammates that encouraged me. Of course, my wife
- 20:45Speaker 5: that was with me every step of the way, and
- 20:47Speaker 5: family and just all the encouragement I had, even trying
- 20:51Speaker 5: to stay away from reading he's not going to play
- 20:53Speaker 5: in the NFL. And then for the Bengals to pick me,
- 20:55Speaker 5: not only draft me, but it's the third pick in
- 20:57Speaker 5: the draft and give me a chance to go to
- 20:59Speaker 5: an NFL camp, it makes that you know, Hall of
- 21:02Speaker 5: fame and then just even more like wow, humble because
- 21:08Speaker 5: here I was, I wasn't even to get a chance,
- 21:09Speaker 5: but half more than half the teams failed me in
- 21:12Speaker 5: the physical and the Bengals said, hey, we watched that
- 21:14Speaker 5: Rose Bowl. We're going to take you, and you know,
- 21:16Speaker 5: to be able to play for them, and to be
- 21:19Speaker 5: able to play for a few more games than I
- 21:21Speaker 5: did at USC it just but it's really humbling to
- 21:25Speaker 5: sit around with all these guys and guys that played
- 21:27Speaker 5: way before I played, a little before guys I played with,
- 21:30Speaker 5: and guys that played after I played, and to just
- 21:33Speaker 5: think about man, and you're right. You think about the
- 21:36Speaker 5: number of individuals that have played this game and that
- 21:38Speaker 5: they've taken one hundred all time, and they're going to say, Okay,
- 21:41Speaker 5: you're the one hundred top. It's just to be mentioned
- 21:45Speaker 5: with the other linement, which is pretty cool.
- 21:47Speaker 1: We've all been humbled in this league at some point
- 21:51Speaker 1: or another. And I remember my you know, my rookie year,
- 21:54Speaker 1: my first training camp, I was humbled fairly quickly about
- 21:58Speaker 1: Olin Cruiz. You you have a welcome to the NFL.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Moment, Yeah, I do. So.
- 22:04Speaker 5: My first head coach Forrest Greg Hall of Fame tackle
- 22:07Speaker 5: Green Bay Packers. So we go up to Green Bay
- 22:10Speaker 5: to play where he played, and I'll never forget as
- 22:13Speaker 5: a rookie, I've been called out in front of my
- 22:16Speaker 5: teammates one time, and that was by my Hall of
- 22:19Speaker 5: Fame tackle head coach because their defensive end had a
- 22:23Speaker 5: really good game. And not only do they have a
- 22:25Speaker 5: good game against me, they pulled them out in the
- 22:27Speaker 5: last few minutes. And he's sitting on the bench real
- 22:29Speaker 5: close to the side and a fan handed him a
- 22:31Speaker 5: hot dog and he's eating a hot dog before the
- 22:33Speaker 5: game was over. So at our meeting Monday morning, man,
- 22:36Speaker 5: he got up and he's talking. He goes and you
- 22:39Speaker 5: our number one. Bit he goes touch and just had
- 22:42Speaker 5: his game and then he's in and he goes and
- 22:44Speaker 5: I'm like.
- 22:45Speaker 3: That will be the last time that that's going to happen.
- 22:49Speaker 5: So that was as a coach, and then I had
- 22:51Speaker 5: another one early in my career. We're playing the New
- 22:53Speaker 5: England Patriots and early on I showed that I could
- 22:56Speaker 5: pull so for a tackle.
- 22:57Speaker 3: The pool is rare, but we had to play.
- 22:58Speaker 5: And I still remember to play onto I release left tackle,
- 23:02Speaker 5: I would pull all the way around strong guard and
- 23:06Speaker 5: the on side backer. They have a backer that's about
- 23:08Speaker 5: six five two fifty Steve Nelson. Our sidelines here, and
- 23:12Speaker 5: my whole thing was when I pulled, get the shoulders,
- 23:14Speaker 5: turned up back and boom, then go up. I did
- 23:18Speaker 5: not get my shoulders. I come here, Steve Nelson, and
- 23:21Speaker 5: just as I started to turn, boom, he hit me in.
- 23:24Speaker 5: All my teammates on the side and go cause he unloaded. Man,
- 23:29Speaker 5: And I was like, and I tell people, you get
- 23:31Speaker 5: knocked out I don't care who you are as a
- 23:33Speaker 5: football player, Hall of Him. We all get knocked down. Yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 5: we get knocked down in life. How are you going
- 23:38Speaker 5: to get back up and believe me? I got up
- 23:40Speaker 5: in a hurry.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I got up in a hurry.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I got back in the huddle and said, Okay, that's
- 23:44Speaker 5: not going to happen again.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So after after all that happened, right, so my I
- 23:48Speaker 1: think my rookie year, I knew I was pretty good
- 23:50Speaker 1: after I made I made a play against Randy moss right,
- 23:53Speaker 1: I Randy Mosses in his prime.
- 23:55Speaker 3: I go up, I get into.
- 23:56Speaker 1: A reception and I'm telling myself like, damn, okay, I'm
- 23:59Speaker 1: from the small school, but I think I can. I
- 24:02Speaker 1: think I can plain in this league with these cass
- 24:04Speaker 1: I just did this ragne them most like it helped
- 24:06Speaker 1: my confidence. Was there a play that made you think
- 24:10Speaker 1: to yourself, oh, man, I could dominate this league? When
- 24:14Speaker 1: did you know you could be a dominant player.
- 24:16Speaker 5: When I got to camp and I earned the starting
- 24:18Speaker 5: job three days in the camp because of what I
- 24:20Speaker 5: was doing, it was like, you know, I was going
- 24:24Speaker 5: against guys that have played at Notre Dame and they're
- 24:26Speaker 5: in the league for a while, and I was able
- 24:27Speaker 5: to pass block and run block, and I said, man,
- 24:30Speaker 5: I said, I'm thankful they drafted me. And the first
- 24:33Speaker 5: thing that came to my mind is that, Remember I
- 24:35Speaker 5: said I wanted a chance to go to camp to
- 24:37Speaker 5: see if.
- 24:37Speaker 3: I could compete.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I told myself, I can compete in this league. And
- 24:41Speaker 5: all of a sudden, I started saying, goes, I don't
- 24:43Speaker 5: only want to compete, I want to be the best.
- 24:44Speaker 5: I want to be a pro bowler every year. But
- 24:46Speaker 5: first three days in camp and then that first preseason game,
- 24:50Speaker 5: I said, okay, there you go. You got lee Roy
- 24:52Speaker 5: Salmon right across from Tampa Bay. And then three weeks
- 24:56Speaker 5: later I opened up with Tampa and I got le
- 24:58Speaker 5: Roy Salmon again, you know. And so it was early
- 25:01Speaker 5: on when I said I believe I can compete in
- 25:03Speaker 5: this league.
- 25:04Speaker 2: So you're not the only tackle that has mentioned Lee
- 25:06Speaker 2: Roy Selvin. I want to get to that in a second,
- 25:09Speaker 2: but I want to kind of go back a little bit.
- 25:11Speaker 2: You know, you mentioned your college. You haven't hurt, you
- 25:14Speaker 2: were you had three knee surgeries. You're only healthy your
- 25:16Speaker 2: sophomore year. Your senior year, you played two games, and
- 25:21Speaker 2: so you only played sixteen games total in college?
- 25:24Speaker 5: Was a few more so nine my freshman year twelve
- 25:29Speaker 5: twenty one, and then seven, so about twenty six games.
- 25:31Speaker 4: Okay, about twenty six games total in.
- 25:33Speaker 3: College out of about forty four to fifteen.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Okay, all that being said, you only missed ten when
- 25:39Speaker 2: you got to the NFL throughout your thirteen year career.
- 25:43Speaker 2: How much pride do you take in that, because, like
- 25:45Speaker 2: you said, it was all the doubt leading up to it,
- 25:48Speaker 2: and you said, you know, I put all that down
- 25:50Speaker 2: and then you.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Were able to stay healthy for your whole career.
- 25:52Speaker 3: But jority of you, well, I think the key for
- 25:54Speaker 3: me was my workouts for alignment.
- 25:56Speaker 5: I lifted, of course, lifted like crazy, but running was
- 25:59Speaker 5: a big part of my work and I ran.
- 26:01Speaker 3: I ran a lot of distance. Like let's take my
- 26:04Speaker 3: rookie year.
- 26:05Speaker 5: I took a day off after that last game and
- 26:06Speaker 5: I started running distance for about two months.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I was like four to six mile a day guy.
- 26:10Speaker 5: So I felt the better shape I was in and
- 26:13Speaker 5: the stronger I was, I was going to cut down
- 26:15Speaker 5: the risk of injury. So being physically as strong and
- 26:19Speaker 5: as you know, when I got to camp, I didn't
- 26:21Speaker 5: worry about my cardio. I could get through practice and
- 26:24Speaker 5: we'd do our gassers and I would just I would
- 26:26Speaker 5: breeze through them. And so when I got drafted, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 5: you have your team goals, Playoff, super Bowl, but a
- 26:34Speaker 5: lot of my personal goals were every time I put
- 26:36Speaker 5: the Bengal uniform on, I want to be there for
- 26:38Speaker 5: my teammates. I want to be there every Sunday for
- 26:41Speaker 5: my teammates, and I'm going to do whatever I can. Yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 5: you know, there's a lot of things out of your control,
- 26:46Speaker 5: getting hurt, stuff, But I want to be in the
- 26:48Speaker 5: best shape so when I'm going full speed, I can
- 26:51Speaker 5: bounce right back up. And you know, I had things
- 26:52Speaker 5: here and there. But you know, I'm very grateful that
- 26:55Speaker 5: I was able to play that many games. I missed
- 26:57Speaker 5: my first game year eleven, I had a dislocated you know,
- 27:01Speaker 5: linebacker hit me from behind after the play was whistled dead.
- 27:04Speaker 5: So I had dislocated elbosh. I missed the last two
- 27:07Speaker 5: games and that was my you know, fourteenth week fourteen,
- 27:10Speaker 5: my eleventh year, and so that was you know, to me,
- 27:15Speaker 5: not only was it my job, and I said, you.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Know, it's my job.
- 27:18Speaker 5: So I'm gonna be ready and I'm gonna be out there.
- 27:20Speaker 5: I want my teammates to trust and believe that I'm
- 27:23Speaker 5: going to be ready every Sunday to go out there
- 27:25Speaker 5: with them, And that was my whole goal.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, to say you were ready is probably
- 27:29Speaker 2: the understatement of the of the day.
- 27:31Speaker 4: But I appreciate you being this humble shoar entity.
- 27:34Speaker 2: You were either you were selected either first team or
- 27:38Speaker 2: second team All Pro every single season. I'm sure you
- 27:41Speaker 2: know this, but I want to make sure you were
- 27:43Speaker 2: two years except for two years out of your whole career,
- 27:46Speaker 2: which is your rookie year and your last year.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Like when you're saying.
- 27:49Speaker 2: These stats, like I know you've heard them, but like,
- 27:52Speaker 2: how do you even kind of quantify the level of
- 27:55Speaker 2: success that you were able to have? Or like when
- 27:58Speaker 2: people tell you these things, you know you can't just
- 28:00Speaker 2: brush it off anymore. Explain this to me like a
- 28:02Speaker 2: normal person when we bring up stats like this that
- 28:05Speaker 2: nobody else has.
- 28:06Speaker 3: What So I go right back to preparation.
- 28:08Speaker 5: I think if you're a businessman and you're in the
- 28:10Speaker 5: top of your field, it's because if you're staying on
- 28:12Speaker 5: top of your craft, you're learning everything you need to
- 28:15Speaker 5: learn about your business. And that was what the approach
- 28:19Speaker 5: I took my off season was just not running and lifting.
- 28:22Speaker 5: It was lifting, running and then take some time to
- 28:24Speaker 5: do my technique. I wanted to go into camp work.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I did apply a metric. So when I got into
- 28:30Speaker 5: camp and my first one on one pass pro, I
- 28:32Speaker 5: didn't feel like I had two left feet. I felt
- 28:34Speaker 5: like I'd been passed proing all off season because of
- 28:37Speaker 5: the plios I did. So it was about and then
- 28:39Speaker 5: studying film insteading, Okay, you got to do this better,
- 28:42Speaker 5: you get so I really believe that was the key.
- 28:45Speaker 5: And every year I said, okay, you're five, it's four
- 28:48Speaker 5: Pro Bowls in a row. I got to turn up
- 28:51Speaker 5: preparation in the off season. I got to do even
- 28:53Speaker 5: more and focus more on the technique, get even stronger,
- 28:57Speaker 5: try to get stronger, stay on top of that and
- 28:59Speaker 5: my conditioning.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Run.
- 29:00Speaker 5: I mean the test. We did an example my last year.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I'm thirty four years old and we have to do
- 29:06Speaker 5: a mile. So there's Tim Krumrai crazy the tackle who
- 29:10Speaker 5: did mini triathlons, and myself, so we had eight and
- 29:13Speaker 5: a half minutes to run a mile.
- 29:14Speaker 3: O line d line together. Do we line up?
- 29:17Speaker 5: And I looked at Tim, he looks at me, and
- 29:18Speaker 5: we win and we say do we take off? And
- 29:21Speaker 5: we do it like in six forty six point fifty,
- 29:24Speaker 5: and all the young linemen are complaining, say, hey, I'm
- 29:27Speaker 5: an older guy and I gotta I gotta show this
- 29:29Speaker 5: team that I can still. So that was the key
- 29:31Speaker 5: I prepared for that. And all the other position guys
- 29:34Speaker 5: were like, what are you guys doing. We have this
- 29:35Speaker 5: much time, We're not gonna I say, guys, we're getting
- 29:38Speaker 5: ready for a season. Man, if you want to win,
- 29:40Speaker 5: you go out and prepare to be the best. So
- 29:42Speaker 5: that was to me to stay on top of my craft.
- 29:45Speaker 5: I did everything from January to July that I possibly
- 29:49Speaker 5: could do, so when I went to camp, all I
- 29:51Speaker 5: had to worry about was my blocking combinations and just
- 29:54Speaker 5: you know with my linemen, my you know, the football part.
- 29:56Speaker 5: But I don't have to worry about my conditioning. I
- 29:58Speaker 5: didn't have, So I believe that's what allowed me to
- 30:01Speaker 5: go in year one, year ten, and even year thirteen,
- 30:05Speaker 5: even though I got I was on IR a couple
- 30:06Speaker 5: of times. I could probably run a lot more Year
- 30:10Speaker 5: thirteen than I could Year nine.
- 30:11Speaker 4: You just kept turning it up.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you just keep turning the vall. I just keep turning.
- 30:15Speaker 5: One of the things my daughter, you know last weekcause
- 30:17Speaker 5: she was we call her the best athlete. You know.
- 30:19Speaker 5: You talk about our grandkids, but our daughter. She was
- 30:22Speaker 5: a two time Miss Basketball, two times D one player
- 30:24Speaker 5: that year. And know how I went to Tennessee and
- 30:26Speaker 5: of course I played cup, but I never gave her
- 30:28Speaker 5: any basketball. The only thing I would do during the
- 30:31Speaker 5: game is if I know something she would look, I
- 30:33Speaker 5: would go turn it up. I'd go turn it up.
- 30:37Speaker 5: And she jokes about that. Now she goes, that's all
- 30:40Speaker 5: that to her boys. Her boys fourteen and fifteen tore
- 30:42Speaker 5: like six eight. Now I'm looking up and that's all
- 30:46Speaker 5: she talks about is turning up the volume, the intensity.
- 30:48Speaker 5: And to me, that's what it was all about. Attitude.
- 30:51Speaker 4: I love that for you. Just keep being a sports brand,
- 30:54Speaker 4: a sports parent.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Oh it's cool. I love it.
- 30:57Speaker 1: So what do I want to I want to talk
- 30:58Speaker 1: about a Super Bowl real quick, super Bowl twenty three.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Where were you thinking when you were on the sideline
- 31:04Speaker 1: and you see Joe Montana come in with three minutes
- 31:07Speaker 1: left in the fourth quarter and they take the lead
- 31:09Speaker 1: sixteen to thirteen.
- 31:10Speaker 5: So when he first came in, you know, a deep
- 31:12Speaker 5: eight yard line. Then they start down. I'm thinking, if
- 31:15Speaker 5: I only had Bruce Smith pass rushing ability to go
- 31:20Speaker 5: ahead and help my defense and get some pass rush
- 31:22Speaker 5: on him. You know, it's crazy because Jerry Rice had
- 31:24Speaker 5: I think over two hundred yards felt helpless there.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Just watch it.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I know that feeling, unfortunately.
- 31:30Speaker 2: So I want to talk about, you know, another record
- 31:33Speaker 2: that you have and is that you were tied for
- 31:37Speaker 2: all time with four touchdowns for offensive linment. But I
- 31:41Speaker 2: want to talk about specifically your favorite, at least that's
- 31:45Speaker 2: what you've told people before, your first one.
- 31:48Speaker 3: That's easy. Cleveland were part right down the street.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Talk about it, tell me about it, call me all right,
- 31:55Speaker 5: Sam Weiss, rookie head coach Kenny Anderson started quarterback hurt
- 31:59Speaker 5: or back up the Boomerasias and rookie. He's left hander,
- 32:03Speaker 5: he's in. I mean, it's muddy, it's terrible. And so
- 32:07Speaker 5: we're up in Cleveland, and so we're down seventeen to ten,
- 32:10Speaker 5: forty some seconds left.
- 32:12Speaker 3: They're punting.
- 32:12Speaker 5: All they gotta do is punt it away. We have
- 32:14Speaker 5: no timeouts. They pinised deep. There's no way Rodney Holman
- 32:17Speaker 5: goes through tight end blocks the punt. Now we got
- 32:20Speaker 5: the ball, we had a little life, so we're going down.
- 32:22Speaker 5: Pass interference on the one, so we get at the
- 32:25Speaker 5: one yard line. And that was the first week, first
- 32:27Speaker 5: week that Sam put in. We called it our we
- 32:30Speaker 5: be goal line because when we've get in that formation,
- 32:33Speaker 5: we be scoring. So he put in two more linemen.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Then he put that was the first time he put
- 32:39Speaker 5: me at H back. It was always tight end h back.
- 32:42Speaker 5: But that was the first week that he had a
- 32:44Speaker 5: play designed twenty eight Anthony bounce touch down, and it
- 32:49Speaker 5: was on the play sheet. I said, there's no way
- 32:51Speaker 5: they'll ever call it. So, you know, Sam and the
- 32:54Speaker 5: quarterbacks always signal in plays, you know, they tell him,
- 32:57Speaker 5: tell them.
- 32:57Speaker 2: How important, tell the people how important it is to
- 32:59Speaker 2: make sure you catch the ball when you actually call
- 33:02Speaker 2: this play.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Press Okay.
- 33:03Speaker 5: So the importance being in Cleveland is that I either
- 33:06Speaker 5: fly home with the team or I walk home.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, that's how important. I mean, come on, that's
- 33:10Speaker 3: but no interstate rivalry.
- 33:12Speaker 5: The Cleveland Browns, I mean, Paul Brown was what the
- 33:15Speaker 5: Cleveland brown started.
- 33:16Speaker 3: The Bengals.
- 33:16Speaker 5: The owner Borist Greig my coach, although this was afterwards
- 33:20Speaker 5: he was fired from Cleveland. But now this is Sam
- 33:23Speaker 5: Weish's first year, so it's very important. Yes, So I'm
- 33:26Speaker 5: saying the first time a practice for working.
- 33:28Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:28Speaker 5: I feel good about catching the Boomer a couple of time.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Boomer can throw the ball, you know, but Kenny kind
- 33:33Speaker 5: of real nice. And so we get in there and
- 33:36Speaker 5: we block it first and goal seven. Well, I didn't
- 33:38Speaker 5: know the signals for all the other plays, but I
- 33:40Speaker 5: knew the signal from Sam to Boomer.
- 33:43Speaker 3: For this play.
- 33:44Speaker 5: And I said, so we're in the huddle first and
- 33:46Speaker 5: goal no time not to the time. I look over
- 33:48Speaker 5: and Sam is signaling this play. Well, I'm the primary
- 33:52Speaker 5: receiver offensive tackle at h back, and I'm thinking, holy smokes,
- 33:56Speaker 5: I said, this guy does not want to be a
- 33:57Speaker 5: head coach in the NFL. Long say, okay, time to
- 34:00Speaker 5: catch it. So we line up. If I'm on the
- 34:03Speaker 5: right h back, I hit, Well, it's ankle deep MUDs
- 34:06Speaker 5: his bat. We go to the ground and Boomer takes it.
- 34:09Speaker 5: He's rolling because he's faking, and he's rolling the right
- 34:12Speaker 5: as a lefty. Well, I fall and he's going that way.
- 34:16Speaker 5: I go nope, I'm staying right here because boom So.
- 34:18Speaker 5: The defense gets up. They start chasing, and I just
- 34:21Speaker 5: settled right here. Boomer stops. Boom, I catch it, touchdown,
- 34:27Speaker 5: We kick the extra point. Now we're going overtime. That
- 34:29Speaker 5: takes as an overtime Jim Breach all time leading scorer
- 34:32Speaker 5: for the Bengals nine for nine and ot kicks x
- 34:35Speaker 5: field goal. We beat him twenty seventeen in overtime. But
- 34:39Speaker 5: it was funny, so I gotta share a fast forward now.
- 34:41Speaker 5: So I grabbed the touchdown the first one, and my lineman, man,
- 34:45Speaker 5: they're grabbing me, and I was gonna spike it. I
- 34:47Speaker 5: thought they're gonna rip my shoulder out, so I waited
- 34:49Speaker 5: for them to leave and then I went boom the
- 34:53Speaker 5: ball boom So. A couple of years ago, on that date,
- 34:57Speaker 5: they usually play that video and this young man and
- 34:59Speaker 5: I rarely answer social media, and I was on Twitter
- 35:04Speaker 5: and some guy rights, he goes, wow, look at Munyos.
- 35:07Speaker 3: He grunked at the spike and I looked back.
- 35:10Speaker 5: I said, excuse me, I said, Gronk Munyas is his
- 35:14Speaker 5: spikes and the guy goes, oh, I'm so sorry, right right,
- 35:18Speaker 5: but yeah, that was the first one. And uh, I
- 35:21Speaker 5: mean it was as an old line. We just were
- 35:24Speaker 5: and and I give a lot of credits. So Monday,
- 35:26Speaker 5: you go in, you lift, we had everybody would leave
- 35:29Speaker 5: the facility and we would have our fat man football game.
- 35:32Speaker 5: We would have between the numbers tag football and it
- 35:35Speaker 5: would be the older guys. Again. In fifth year, I
- 35:37Speaker 5: was an older guy, so we play the younger guys
- 35:40Speaker 5: in a touch football game. Well, Max Montoya, the starting
- 35:44Speaker 5: right guard, was a quarterback and I was a receiver,
- 35:46Speaker 5: and you know, we'd get a young guy, say I
- 35:48Speaker 5: got Muniyas, I got Munyas. I look at Max and
- 35:50Speaker 5: we you know, we torched him and stuff. And so
- 35:53Speaker 5: Sam's office was right on the corner there, and I
- 35:55Speaker 5: think he would watch us, and maybe that's kind of
- 35:57Speaker 5: what led to you know, throw it to me. But
- 35:59Speaker 5: uh yeah, so that was and you'll appreciate. I gotta
- 36:02Speaker 5: share this story too. So we're playing at home against
- 36:04Speaker 5: Seattle and now I'm on the left tight end seven
- 36:08Speaker 5: D eight eligible. You know, Refree announces it, so I'm
- 36:12Speaker 5: supposed to hit the guy and I go to pieline boom. Well,
- 36:15Speaker 5: Boomer gets flushed even in goal line. So I kind
- 36:17Speaker 5: of cut across and the in line's right here and
- 36:20Speaker 5: the linebacker's right here, and I see Boomer, so I'm thinking, disreact.
- 36:25Speaker 3: I stopped. Boomer throws it in the door. I go up.
- 36:29Speaker 3: There's no I but this guy goes over my back. Yeah,
- 36:33Speaker 3: past interference. We get another play.
- 36:36Speaker 5: So I just it was just like I said, Now,
- 36:38Speaker 5: I've watched my gu I just watched my guy.
- 36:41Speaker 3: You know, I just watch my guys. What they do.
- 36:42Speaker 5: You know, you just stop and let them go over
- 36:44Speaker 5: your back because there's no more room to get running.
- 36:46Speaker 5: And then one other one weren't Houston, and I'm the
- 36:48Speaker 5: right this time. I'm the right tight end. Bruce Coslet's
- 36:51Speaker 5: up in the box and we call, you know, hit
- 36:54Speaker 5: and go to the pieline well and whistle goes dead.
- 36:58Speaker 5: So what I do is I hooked locked that defensive end,
- 37:01Speaker 5: drive them inside. I said, was not good. Next play,
- 37:05Speaker 5: get in the huddle. He calls the same play. I
- 37:09Speaker 5: hit the guy, go touchdown by getting the planet.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Said Bruce.
- 37:12Speaker 5: He says, I saw you hooked the guy. You ran,
- 37:15Speaker 5: you know you ran blocked him. I said, yeah, because
- 37:17Speaker 5: I saw that you didn't give it away. So yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 5: sot a couple against Houston, one against Seattle, and then
- 37:24Speaker 5: of course the big Clayland I.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Was it was all four were boomer, All four were boomer.
- 37:29Speaker 4: In the sync. I like that. I did look man
- 37:31Speaker 4: first of all, I love big man football. It was
- 37:34Speaker 4: that was a.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Most like when DB's excuse me, It's like when d
- 37:38Speaker 1: Lineman get interceptions.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Were so happy.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Everybody's happy, and everyone's trying to get them in the
- 37:43Speaker 1: end zone. Everybody's everyone's trying to get them an in zone.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Come on, let's go, keep it.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Going, keep going.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Everybody loves big Man with ball. It's hilarious. This is great, Okay.
- 37:51Speaker 4: I love the stories.
- 37:53Speaker 3: We will be right back.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Two thousand and thirteen, in New York, I won the
- 37:59Speaker 1: one Walter Payton Man of the Year, very precedious award
- 38:03Speaker 1: that the NFL has nineteen ninety one.
- 38:07Speaker 3: You won the award.
- 38:09Speaker 4: What does that mean to you?
- 38:11Speaker 5: So that to me is right up there with the
- 38:13Speaker 5: Hall of Fame. And I got the Athletes and Action
- 38:16Speaker 5: Bart Star Award, which is similar to Walter Payton, because
- 38:19Speaker 5: that's not all football. It's who you are as an
- 38:22Speaker 5: individual with your family in the community. And to me,
- 38:26Speaker 5: that has so much more impact than the thirteen years
- 38:29Speaker 5: I played in And I'm talking lifetime impact with people
- 38:33Speaker 5: that you're working with, and so you know that Walter
- 38:36Speaker 5: Payton NFL Man of the.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Year is very very special.
- 38:40Speaker 5: In fact, I got the I got the jersey frame
- 38:43Speaker 5: in my man cave with the you know the.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Little old patch. Yeah, the patch on it, and oh
- 38:48Speaker 3: you gott I ain't got the patch.
- 38:50Speaker 4: I gotta get you got so you got to get
- 38:51Speaker 4: the patch. I ain't got the I got to talk
- 38:54Speaker 4: to somebody. I gotta get the patch.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Talk to I think Tracy, Tracy, Tracy, I need my patch.
- 38:59Speaker 5: Anthony mentioned jersey with the Men of the Year patch.
- 39:02Speaker 5: They went back and got you what to what happened?
- 39:05Speaker 5: So in Minnesota Super Bowl the Eagles were they Yeah,
- 39:09Speaker 5: So Chris Carter noticed that the players on the field
- 39:12Speaker 5: had the He goes, hey, all those former winners man. Yeah, yeah,
- 39:16Speaker 5: and you didn't get the jersey. I thought they put
- 39:19Speaker 5: a jersey in all her rooms.
- 39:20Speaker 1: So I have a jersey when we do appearances and
- 39:23Speaker 1: things like that. But I don't have like my own
- 39:25Speaker 1: personal like I need.
- 39:26Speaker 5: I got to get the patch like your game jersey
- 39:29Speaker 5: with the but they have it sold on so I
- 39:31Speaker 5: gotta get that. Yeah, but yeah, that that award I mean,
- 39:35Speaker 5: and had a chance, of course to be around Walter.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I mean, what a guy.
- 39:39Speaker 5: I mean, we're in a round table in DC one year.
- 39:41Speaker 5: My daughter's six years old. And what I'd do when
- 39:44Speaker 5: they were young, I'd take them to an event, just myself,
- 39:46Speaker 5: my son, myself, my daughter, and we'd go. And I
- 39:49Speaker 5: took her to DC and we're doing these round tables
- 39:51Speaker 5: and one of them, Walter and I sat out. So
- 39:53Speaker 5: we were in the out there sitting down and Michelle
- 39:55Speaker 5: was sitting between Walter and I. We left, and she
- 39:59Speaker 5: felt like a princess after spending time with Walter Man.
- 40:01Speaker 5: She would ask how's Walter Payton doing when.
- 40:03Speaker 3: She was a little girl?
- 40:05Speaker 5: But you know, to carry his name and to be
- 40:07Speaker 5: so that is a very right up there at the
- 40:10Speaker 5: top with anything I've been awarded with.
- 40:13Speaker 2: All right, do you tell us more about your anthey
- 40:15Speaker 2: Munhos Foundation. You have been able to affect more than
- 40:18Speaker 2: fifty seven thousand youth throughout the Cincinnati.
- 40:22Speaker 4: And Ohio area.
- 40:23Speaker 2: You've given over two million dollars away in scholarship funds.
- 40:27Speaker 3: We started in two thousand and two.
- 40:28Speaker 5: Of course, I retired, you know, ten years prior to that,
- 40:32Speaker 5: and I understand, when you're playing, you have leverage, you
- 40:35Speaker 5: have relevance to start, and a lot of young guys
- 40:37Speaker 5: start foundations. Husband bother and an NFL football player, I
- 40:42Speaker 5: didn't have time to be involved in a foundation, I mean,
- 40:44Speaker 5: so I helped a lot of other groups what they
- 40:46Speaker 5: were doing. Because when I do something, I want to
- 40:48Speaker 5: be totally engaged. I want to be hands on impact.
- 40:51Speaker 5: So in two thousand and two, after putting a game
- 40:53Speaker 5: plan together and you know, talking to corporate people, our
- 40:56Speaker 5: kids were like sophomores in college, I said, now's the
- 40:58Speaker 5: time to start it. So I started the Anti Munius
- 41:01Speaker 5: Foundation to engage the Tristate area to impact youth mentally, physically,
- 41:05Speaker 5: and spiritually. So we have eight programs, the scholarship being
- 41:08Speaker 5: one of the programs we have. We work with young
- 41:11Speaker 5: people from kindergarten through seniors in high school, everything from
- 41:14Speaker 5: mentoring program from k through five and then we don't
- 41:17Speaker 5: want to lose them after fifth grade, so we have
- 41:19Speaker 5: another mentoring program for middle school and then.
- 41:22Speaker 3: So that's two of the programs.
- 41:23Speaker 5: We have overnight character camps we take away in the spring,
- 41:27Speaker 5: pretty multicultural We take them about one hundred and fifty
- 41:30Speaker 5: young men to three three nights to a camp and
- 41:32Speaker 5: they just show up.
- 41:33Speaker 3: We have we teach them a little football, man.
- 41:35Speaker 5: We can't take them to camp, but a lot of
- 41:37Speaker 5: it is character team building. And then we have a
- 41:40Speaker 5: chapel in the character of talk every day and we
- 41:43Speaker 5: have a coaching staff that leads them through discussion. So
- 41:46Speaker 5: that's we do that one in the spring, and then
- 41:48Speaker 5: the fall we do one that's one hundred percent of
- 41:50Speaker 5: Hispanic kids. Take them away for three days and to
- 41:53Speaker 5: feed them, give them swag. I mean, like I said
- 41:55Speaker 5: that all they do is bring their change of clothes
- 41:57Speaker 5: and whatever they need to bring.
- 41:59Speaker 3: So that's two more.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Then in June, I have a dinner in golf and
- 42:03Speaker 5: then two days right about that time, we have it's
- 42:06Speaker 5: the same template as the overnight camps, but it's a
- 42:08Speaker 5: day camp at the Bengals Stadium. We have about four
- 42:11Speaker 5: hundred young people. Twenty percent of those four hundred young ladies,
- 42:14Speaker 5: same thing. We teach them a little football, but it's
- 42:16Speaker 5: character team building. And I have a coach that coached
- 42:20Speaker 5: high school football forever, was an educator and he could
- 42:23Speaker 5: probably write a book on and you could use it
- 42:26Speaker 5: for young people corporations on team building activities, and we
- 42:30Speaker 5: do that. We utilize that. So we do those three camps.
- 42:33Speaker 5: In October, we have what we call our Youth Leadership Seminar.
- 42:36Speaker 5: We bring in anywhere from eighty five to one hundred
- 42:38Speaker 5: high schools full day. We have motivational leadership speakers, we
- 42:42Speaker 5: have breakout sessions. We have key stakeholders in the community
- 42:45Speaker 5: that lead these young this high school through conversation of
- 42:48Speaker 5: things they might not want to discuss, you know, other
- 42:51Speaker 5: and we have we've been you know, we'll do entrepreneurs young,
- 42:54Speaker 5: we do mental health, which has been a big hit
- 42:56Speaker 5: for these young people. So we bring in speakers and
- 42:59Speaker 5: at the end of the day, after this full day event,
- 43:01Speaker 5: we do a community service challenge and these young people
- 43:04Speaker 5: will initiate and put them together. And we've had some
- 43:06Speaker 5: great community service projects. They put together projects and then
- 43:09Speaker 5: we kind of track them and I give money to
- 43:12Speaker 5: the top two. You know, maybe like redoing a school,
- 43:15Speaker 5: you know, a playground, or doing this that we had
- 43:18Speaker 5: an inner city school, very little resources. They initiated and
- 43:22Speaker 5: it's still going. Not only came up with an ideal,
- 43:25Speaker 5: but built brick and Mortar a school in Sierra Leone,
- 43:28Speaker 5: really and then the next year this was an inner
- 43:31Speaker 5: city school. They did a fundraiser with the suburban school.
- 43:35Speaker 5: So you're talking ninety nine percent black, ninety nine percent white.
- 43:38Speaker 3: They had a walk.
- 43:38Speaker 5: They raised about thirty thousand dollars. It costs a dollar
- 43:42Speaker 5: a year to put a kid through school, so they
- 43:44Speaker 5: sent us pictures of these kids that had ach in
- 43:47Speaker 5: high school, these little kids in Sierra Leone because that
- 43:49Speaker 5: was the school. But we have things like that, So
- 43:51Speaker 5: that's our leadership seminar. We have two types of scholarships.
- 43:54Speaker 5: Ones in the spring, we do nine male nine female finalists.
- 43:58Speaker 5: It's called our straight A Academics, Athletics, Attitude Achievement, but
- 44:03Speaker 5: a big criteria is overcoming adversity and that's a one
- 44:06Speaker 5: time two to five thousand dollars scholarship. We have an
- 44:09Speaker 5: amazing steakhouse in Cincinnati. The guy donates it, They bring
- 44:12Speaker 5: their most influential teacher and then so we award that
- 44:16Speaker 5: the mail winner gets a custom made ring foundation ring
- 44:19Speaker 5: mcgal gets a nice pendant and then so they get
- 44:23Speaker 5: to come up to the podium with their teacher.
- 44:25Speaker 3: We take pictures.
- 44:26Speaker 5: That's our straight a and then in the summer when
- 44:28Speaker 5: we do our event, we have our scholarship fund, so
- 44:31Speaker 5: we award twenty thousand dollars scholarships to individuals. We just
- 44:34Speaker 5: gave out five last month in June, and two days
- 44:38Speaker 5: after that, one of my board members, who two board
- 44:41Speaker 5: members and myself, we interview these young people that we
- 44:44Speaker 5: do interview and we had fifteen finalists and we had
- 44:47Speaker 5: fun for five but after each interview, my buddy said, man,
- 44:50Speaker 5: I wish we had fifteen scholarships because everyone of them
- 44:53Speaker 5: was deserving. So two days afterwards, this board member calls
- 44:56Speaker 5: and says that, you know, I'm so thankful to be
- 44:59Speaker 5: on this committe. We interview these young people and you
- 45:01Speaker 5: know how passionate I am about we have a chance
- 45:03Speaker 5: to change LiveShare. When we're talking first generation kids, they graduate,
- 45:07Speaker 5: they come back and help. He says, you know, they
- 45:10Speaker 5: run him and his wife and the family foundation. He says,
- 45:13Speaker 5: we just had a meeting board meeting, and we're gonna grant.
- 45:16Speaker 5: We're gonna write your foundation of grant list plan. We
- 45:19Speaker 5: have ten scholarships for next year already stroke to check
- 45:22Speaker 5: for two hundred grand.
- 45:23Speaker 3: But right now a year in advance. We already have
- 45:26Speaker 3: ten scholarships that we're gonna give next year. So that's
- 45:29Speaker 3: the foundation.
- 45:30Speaker 5: Like you said, we deal with about twenty five to
- 45:33Speaker 5: three hundred young people. And I love it because I'm
- 45:35Speaker 5: there at the camps and.
- 45:37Speaker 4: We can tell your fault, the way you're able to.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Provide so much information, the passion in which you speak about, like,
- 45:42Speaker 2: we can tell you care. And so this goes a
- 45:45Speaker 2: lot back to what you're saying when you're coaching your
- 45:47Speaker 2: old son. When you're coaching and you're doing all these things,
- 45:49Speaker 2: I appreciate you for being who you are. I can
- 45:52Speaker 2: tell everything you do it matters.
- 45:54Speaker 5: To you, but does And you know, it's funny. I went,
- 45:57Speaker 5: I was meeting with.
- 46:00Speaker 3: My CEO tour.
- 46:01Speaker 5: I go, and I'm the guy that I share my
- 46:03Speaker 5: passion and mission and hopefully they write checks. I write
- 46:05Speaker 5: with a ride with the guy for four hours in
- 46:07Speaker 5: a golf cart. Don't ask a penny, and he here,
- 46:10Speaker 5: you need some money. So I was talking to CEO
- 46:12Speaker 5: in Cincinnati in about twenty minutes and it he goes, man,
- 46:15Speaker 5: you know what's going on with your foun day? I said,
- 46:17Speaker 5: you know what I said, everything's public. You can check
- 46:20Speaker 5: our audits. The last six years, we've given ninety five
- 46:23Speaker 5: cents to a dollar on the kids. And he goes,
- 46:25Speaker 5: I'm on the board of this was a few years agause,
- 46:27Speaker 5: I'm on the board of one of the players. He goes,
- 46:29Speaker 5: they don't know what's going on with their names on
- 46:31Speaker 5: I said, well, I said, well, I that's why I
- 46:33Speaker 5: waited ten years after, because I wanted to be engaged.
- 46:36Speaker 5: I run our board meetings. You know, I don't know
- 46:39Speaker 5: everything about it, but I know our numbers. I know
- 46:41Speaker 5: where it's all going, you know. I make decisions on
- 46:43Speaker 5: staff payment. We have four staff. We're leaning staff for
- 46:46Speaker 5: what we do, but they get it done. And I
- 46:48Speaker 5: have seventeen unbelievable board members. I mean I could call
- 46:52Speaker 5: him right now for some advice and if they didn't
- 46:54Speaker 5: pick up the phone, they'd call right back. And then
- 46:57Speaker 5: we one thing we started which is pretty cool twenty
- 47:00Speaker 5: four years ago. We have an internship program with local
- 47:04Speaker 5: college students. We have four to eight a year that
- 47:06Speaker 5: come in and it's non paid. It's part of what
- 47:09Speaker 5: they do at school and they learn everything about the
- 47:11Speaker 5: non for profits. They're not just running off copies, man,
- 47:14Speaker 5: They're they're learning and working and so and then we
- 47:17Speaker 5: have a database of about one hundred and fifty volunteers.
- 47:19Speaker 5: So it's truly it has my name on it, but
- 47:22Speaker 5: it's a team effort. I mean, it's that's where it
- 47:24Speaker 5: ends with my name. But so yeah, we're we're rolling.
- 47:28Speaker 5: And of course at my age, you know you're thinking, Okay,
- 47:30Speaker 5: how much longer do you do this? And every year
- 47:31Speaker 5: my wife and I go, Man, it keeps energizing us,
- 47:34Speaker 5: and here you keep going.
- 47:35Speaker 1: So you've given us some gyms. Well, just how humble
- 47:40Speaker 1: you are. And clearly you are not a self made person. No,
- 47:44Speaker 1: So if I gave you four people to put on
- 47:47Speaker 1: your amount rushmore of who made you the man you
- 47:51Speaker 1: are today, who would those four people be?
- 47:54Speaker 5: Right in the middle would be Estra Munos, my mom,
- 47:57Speaker 5: who raised five by ourself, working two three jobs.
- 48:00Speaker 3: I never knew my dad. He was in prison, and.
- 48:02Speaker 5: She just he taught us work ethic, not by shitting
- 48:05Speaker 5: us down, but just by watching her walk over the
- 48:07Speaker 5: tracks to work at seven in the morning, coming home
- 48:10Speaker 5: at four, picking dinner, washing clothes and everything. She taught
- 48:13Speaker 5: us and then literally teaching us what responsibility is. Because
- 48:18Speaker 5: if I wanted to play baseball in the summer. We
- 48:20Speaker 5: had to do our chores. And it wasn't just dust.
- 48:22Speaker 5: We had to wash clothes, wash dishes, iron clothes, clean
- 48:25Speaker 5: the house. So she would be right there. I'd have
- 48:28Speaker 5: to put my wife right there, Dedi, like I said,
- 48:31Speaker 5: I got married when I was nineteen, so she's been
- 48:33Speaker 5: on the journey for a lot of years. And I
- 48:35Speaker 5: mean just a great supporter, you know, a woman of
- 48:39Speaker 5: great insight and great faith. And so I put Dedi there.
- 48:44Speaker 5: I'd have to put Jesus right there. You know, he'd
- 48:48Speaker 5: be right there. I think it'd be between my mom
- 48:51Speaker 5: and him, but I'd still put my mom.
- 48:53Speaker 3: He'd be right next to her.
- 48:54Speaker 4: You can put them all the time.
- 48:56Speaker 1: He's got his own, Okay, that's so that's he's his own.
- 49:00Speaker 4: He got his own.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Yeah. The fourth would be a team of support.
- 49:05Speaker 1: You're such a team player you can't even pick right.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Is hard, And I did that specifically. It's like, no,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I need you to pick four people.
- 49:13Speaker 4: You can't.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but that just goes into character, like no, I've
- 49:19Speaker 1: a lot of people have poured into you.
- 49:21Speaker 3: It's uh, it's been a great journey, just uh.
- 49:24Speaker 5: I mean, you know when DDE and I pray in
- 49:26Speaker 5: the morning, we pray about for our family family, then
- 49:29Speaker 5: we pray about our college friends. We pray about our
- 49:31Speaker 5: friends in Cincinnati. And it's just like I mean, and
- 49:35Speaker 5: I sit there at times just overwhelmed by just you know,
- 49:38Speaker 5: because you know, men don't have you know, it's hard.
- 49:41Speaker 5: Ladies have close friends, but you talk to men, it's like,
- 49:44Speaker 5: give me your top three four best friends, and they're like,
- 49:47Speaker 5: I think most guys struggle with that.
- 49:49Speaker 3: I can.
- 49:50Speaker 5: I can give you like close to ten, like guys
- 49:52Speaker 5: that are just tight, you know, like minded. I can
- 49:56Speaker 5: call those four guys in California and at least four
- 49:59Speaker 5: minimums since that I have that.
- 50:01Speaker 3: So I'm blessed man, I tell you what.
- 50:02Speaker 5: That's why I can't come up with just you know,
- 50:04Speaker 5: because there's so many people in my life that have
- 50:07Speaker 5: been just impactful.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Half of that, though, Anthony, is because you give that.
- 50:12Speaker 2: And so when you give that emotion, you give that
- 50:14Speaker 2: you're open. And when you're open like that, you're usually
- 50:17Speaker 2: able to receive more as well.
- 50:19Speaker 4: And so when you.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Put it out there and to the earth and to
- 50:21Speaker 2: the world and to the universe, that's when you get it.
- 50:24Speaker 3: You know.
- 50:24Speaker 2: We always talk about You know what, when you want something,
- 50:28Speaker 2: you need to start praying for others to get it
- 50:30Speaker 2: as well. Yeah, that's when you receive it, you know
- 50:32Speaker 2: what I mean. So you got to put it out
- 50:33Speaker 2: there to receive it all tomately. And we can tell
- 50:36Speaker 2: by your passion, your words how much of a team
- 50:38Speaker 2: guy you are and how I get it listening to
- 50:42Speaker 2: you and the way you describe things about who you
- 50:45Speaker 2: truly genuinely are, and I hope the rest of us
- 50:48Speaker 2: can pick they're gonna be able to pick up on
- 50:49Speaker 2: that as well.
- 50:50Speaker 4: It's just interesting.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Because you know, for a lot of years when Cincinnati
- 50:55Speaker 2: wasn't on top of everything, the one player that always
- 50:59Speaker 2: stood and they talked about was Anthony Munyo. And now
- 51:02Speaker 2: that I've got to sit down and meet you and
- 51:04Speaker 2: humbly and just spend some time with you, the last
- 51:07Speaker 2: person that Anthony Munyos talks about is Anthony Munyo.
- 51:10Speaker 4: And so it's just really.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Cool kind of putting all that together, being this young
- 51:13Speaker 2: man that watched they learned all these great things about you,
- 51:16Speaker 2: then getting to meet you and then it's like, you know,
- 51:19Speaker 2: actually he wants to talk about everybody.
- 51:20Speaker 4: Else in his life. I like that. Yeah, I hate him.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Well, I appreciate that. And my wife and I always talk
- 51:25Speaker 5: about us. You know what, we're both from Montaro, California,
- 51:28Speaker 5: and I mean, we don't forget where we came from.
- 51:30Speaker 5: We were doing an event the other last year and
- 51:33Speaker 5: it was there's a place where they take addicts and
- 51:37Speaker 5: bring them in and they house them and they feed
- 51:39Speaker 5: them and they train them, get them jobs. And the
- 51:43Speaker 5: guy that's directing, he's a recovered addict and his wife
- 51:47Speaker 5: is the same thing.
- 51:47Speaker 3: And she's talked to my wife.
- 51:48Speaker 5: She's, I know you guys are here to talk to us,
- 51:51Speaker 5: but I'm sure you guys don't understand what a lot
- 51:53Speaker 5: of us are going And I'm like, he's know, you know,
- 51:57Speaker 5: we both come from dysfunctional My brother oded in my
- 52:00Speaker 5: arms when he was a senior in high school. Thank
- 52:02Speaker 5: god he survived. I got three cousins doing life in prison.
- 52:06Speaker 5: I communicate with them and I said, no, we we
- 52:09Speaker 5: know what you all are going through. You know, we've
- 52:11Speaker 5: had addiction, and you know I paid for a couple
- 52:13Speaker 5: of funerals of my young cousins that were shot to
- 52:16Speaker 5: death drive by shooting.
- 52:17Speaker 3: So no, we get it.
- 52:18Speaker 5: That's why we're doing what we're doing because we want
- 52:21Speaker 5: to be a part of the solution. But yeah, Dede
- 52:23Speaker 5: and I, you know, we h he's very smart, but
- 52:27Speaker 5: we have that you know, background that we'll never forget,
- 52:30Speaker 5: uh and very thankful that you know where we came from.
- 52:33Speaker 5: You know, we talked about my college adversity. I never
- 52:36Speaker 5: trade that in for what I learned. I mean it
- 52:38Speaker 5: was tough at the time. I mean to be watching
- 52:41Speaker 5: my guys every year on the sideline, you know. I
- 52:44Speaker 5: you know, that's one thing I told my son. He
- 52:45Speaker 5: was a four year starter, but he sat out his
- 52:47Speaker 5: second year. And the first thing I told him, I said,
- 52:50Speaker 5: don't isolate yourself. Stay engaged with your team. They're preparing
- 52:55Speaker 5: the coaches, so it's going to be a natural separation,
- 52:58Speaker 5: you know, someone that's hurt with I said, but you
- 53:01Speaker 5: got to make it your initiative to be engaged. One
- 53:04Speaker 5: of the things I did for three years I became
- 53:06Speaker 5: the official spatter. I'd carry my tape. But you know
- 53:09Speaker 5: that sc you had to spray paint your spat black.
- 53:12Speaker 5: So if Charles White wanted a little extra tape, I'd
- 53:14Speaker 5: have to have a spray can. If my lineman wanted
- 53:16Speaker 5: a spat I would do it for him, but I
- 53:18Speaker 5: had to spray it black because no white tape on
- 53:20Speaker 5: your shoes. So that's how I kind of stayed engaged,
- 53:22Speaker 5: you know, with my guys and hung out with them.
- 53:24Speaker 5: But you know, because it is it's.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Your niche role exactly right, be a team player.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I got.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Nothing else for Anthony human. You've been amazing, awesome. Thank
- 53:36Speaker 1: you for just the wisdom and just everything you've said.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I took it all in and I really do appreciate it.
- 53:41Speaker 1: And then as Room said, you you really are passionate
- 53:44Speaker 1: and you get out what you receive.
- 53:47Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 53:48Speaker 1: And it is an organic feeling. And yeah, I'm I'm
- 53:51Speaker 1: taking that with me today, no doubt.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Man, you are a light.
- 53:54Speaker 2: You got to keep shining, Anthony Munjos, because you shine
- 53:57Speaker 2: so bright you allow others to be seen. And so
- 54:00Speaker 2: hat you man for stopping by taking time. And I'm
- 54:03Speaker 2: gonna get us out of here. For all of our
