- 0:01Speaker 1: Weekdays 3 to 7 p.m the flash drive with carl
- 0:05Speaker 1: wastey on kfm 94.5.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I know why did i play blue you can ask
- 0:10Speaker 2: me so ask me also why don't you ask ask.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Me yes okay but in order to ask you you
- 0:15Speaker 1: have to let me.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Ask go okay carl why did you play blue.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Why did i play blue yeah why are you asking.
- 0:21Speaker 1: You're just you're really gonna do me like.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That dirty No, I played one love because that's what
- 0:29Speaker 2: we do.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because it's often I get.
- 0:32Speaker 2: On the phone and then I call a certain person
- 0:35Speaker 2: named Jackie.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Okay. From the Diskem Foundation.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:39Speaker 4: And I call and we say, what's up? And we
- 0:41Speaker 4: do some things and stuff.
- 0:42Speaker 2: But it's not often that I have this unique opportunity
- 0:45Speaker 2: to have this woman right next to me in the flesh.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Live and in concert. I can't believe she's here. I
- 0:51Speaker 4: just want to check. Are you AI?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I am not.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Yes, it's her. It's really her. Hi, Jackie. Hi, Carl.
- 0:59Speaker 5: How are you?
- 0:59Speaker 3: So nice to be here.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It's great. It was awesome to see you yesterday as well.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah, great day.
- 1:04Speaker 4: It was really a wonderful day.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And thank you very much for being one of our
- 1:06Speaker 2: partners to come through because Paddle for a Purpose. On
- 1:09Speaker 2: behalf of Cassidy and I, I'm sorry that we lost
- 1:12Speaker 2: to Cape Talk.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:14Speaker 4: I know you're rooting for us. I'm sorry about that.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But the thing is, it was actually probably like part
- 1:18Speaker 2: of A narrative that we had to follow, right?
- 1:21Speaker 1: I think any story is way better if it starts
- 1:24Speaker 1: with an underdog story.
- 1:26Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:26Speaker 4: Agreed.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So now we come and we've got a purpose. Now
- 1:29Speaker 3: we can keep saying, hey guys, let's do this again.
- 1:32Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:33Speaker 4: There's a storyline. So now we've got, yeah, we'll be doing.
- 1:35Speaker 4: So thank you. And by the way, Jackie, you can ball.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Well, it takes me like five games to get warmed up,
- 1:41Speaker 1: but then I'm ready to go.
- 1:42Speaker 4: No, you can ball. That's the thing.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But the reason why we're here today is that often
- 1:47Speaker 2: we chat and we do some things and we help
- 1:49Speaker 2: in a flash where we can. But today, I wanted
- 1:51Speaker 2: to focus on key partnerships because yesterday gave me that
- 1:54Speaker 2: catalyst to think about how important partnerships and collaborations are
- 1:58Speaker 2: to the Discamp Foundation, as well as KFN 94.5. So
- 2:02Speaker 2: let's just express what you felt on a day like that,
- 2:04Speaker 2: because I feel like that.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Was the premise for our conversation. Absolutely.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So as you know, the Diskin Foundation has been collaborating
- 2:11Speaker 1: with corporates and the like for our NGOs and for
- 2:14Speaker 1: our beneficiaries for very many years. And it seems to
- 2:17Speaker 1: be a bit of a buzz phrase in the greater industries.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And I was invited to a conference to speak recently
- 2:23Speaker 1: and everyone's, you've got to learn how to collaborate and strategize.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And I think we've just been doing this. And yesterday
- 2:29Speaker 1: was just proof in point.
- 2:31Speaker 3: We just do it. We know how to identify the
- 2:34Speaker 3: right people.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yep. To take on the right initiatives with and like-minded
- 2:39Speaker 1: and like same heart.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And that's the core of the way forward.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And action people too.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Because I know that it's great to, let's be honest,
- 2:48Speaker 2: it's great to go out and have a dinner. Or
- 2:52Speaker 2: a golf or a paddle round. But then sometimes it
- 2:55Speaker 2: kind of, let's be honest, it gets left there. But
- 2:59Speaker 2: I know that you love people who take action.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yes, I do.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Who are really willing to say, right, let's follow this
- 3:04Speaker 2: up and follow through. And that's what I love about
- 3:06Speaker 2: you and the Discount Foundation.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 3:07Speaker 4: That's exactly what you do.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And I think maybe as an example, let's look at
- 3:13Speaker 2: some of the partnerships that you believe have been effective
- 3:16Speaker 2: as maybe a benchmark for us to continue looking for
- 3:19Speaker 2: these opportunities.
- 3:20Speaker 3: So one of.
- 3:22Speaker 1: The ones that are vitally important and it is one
- 3:25Speaker 1: of our main pillars is access to nutrition.
- 3:27Speaker 3: So we have Octodeck, which is a property company.
- 3:30Speaker 1: We have Nivea, which is a beauty skincare company.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Then we have PepsiCo, who have the Future Life.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And then there's, of course, the Diskem Foundation and our
- 3:40Speaker 1: implementation partners, Hope Worldwide. And through that partnership, we're able
- 3:44Speaker 1: to provide 3.6 million meals per annum to early childhood
- 3:48Speaker 1: development centers around the country. Another beautiful one, which is new,
- 3:53Speaker 1: is Community to Korea. And we'll be here in Cape
- 3:55Speaker 1: Town doing our first one early next year. Great. Getting
- 3:59Speaker 1: children that have left school from underserved communities, non-fee paying
- 4:03Speaker 1: schools into careers because they think they can't. You know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: they don't get a good matric. They don't get a
- 4:08Speaker 1: matric for whatever reason. It's not for us to judge.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Their circumstances are often beyond our understanding and the challenges
- 4:15Speaker 1: they face are not something.
- 4:17Speaker 3: That most of us understand.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So we want to ignite ambition and get them into careers,
- 4:22Speaker 1: no matter what it is, where they can grow. And
- 4:25Speaker 1: if they had to leave Matric and they want to
- 4:27Speaker 1: study further, they can, but they can be gainfully employed.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So we partnered with the Hilton Community to Career under
- 4:34Speaker 1: the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund and the Diskin Foundation. And our
- 4:37Speaker 1: most recent one in Santon at the Hampton by Hilton,
- 4:40Speaker 1: we had Celsi, we had Honor, we had Hatfield Motors,
- 4:44Speaker 1: we had Steers, we had Mantis.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Of course, we had Daskem.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Wow.
- 4:49Speaker 1: To mention just a few of the partners that were there,
- 4:52Speaker 1: we had Microsoft was a massive partner. These kids got
- 4:55Speaker 1: swag bags that were next level. And they were shown
- 4:58Speaker 1: that all you need is a basic metric, a driver's license.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We'll help you get all of that. And then you
- 5:02Speaker 1: can start out as a car salesman. So- That's real
- 5:06Speaker 1: collaboration with real people. We know what we can't do
- 5:09Speaker 1: and who can do it with us.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And take it further. You know, one of our favorite
- 5:14Speaker 2: moments is when we did our Oprah moment.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That was my best ever.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Remember we did that with that, what's the brand called again?
- 5:21Speaker 3: I think it's Hisense.
- 5:23Speaker 1: We were chatting about this.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And the thing is about Hisense is that in front
- 5:28Speaker 2: of us, because I wanted to build this up properly,
- 5:30Speaker 2: we do have somebody who is the, brand marketing manager
- 5:34Speaker 2: of Hisense South Africa.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Hello, Alex. Hi there, Carl.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Did you just hear that R & B voice the
- 5:41Speaker 2: guy just gave me?
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Alex, thank you so much for coming in. And I
- 5:47Speaker 2: wanted to build it up properly in that way because
- 5:50Speaker 2: that was one of our favorites.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Jackie and I still talk about that moment.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Whenever we see each other we go we must do
- 5:57Speaker 2: something like that again man I don't know how to
- 5:59Speaker 2: do it but like we have to do it and
- 6:00Speaker 2: I think that's the great thing and I just I
- 6:02Speaker 2: wish you were there yesterday I'm sorry that we didn't
- 6:05Speaker 2: invite you But we're going to invite you for the
- 6:07Speaker 2: next one because there has to be a comeback, right?
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yes, for sure.
- 6:10Speaker 5: 100%.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But the thing is, you were so open to team
- 6:14Speaker 2: up with us, with the Disc Game Foundation, and to
- 6:16Speaker 2: make that moment happen where we gave away all those
- 6:19Speaker 2: machines and it really supported so many people at different
- 6:23Speaker 2: types of things. It was literally a couple of seconds
- 6:26Speaker 2: with each one of those charities and we gave all
- 6:28Speaker 2: of them those machines.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And I think that was fantastic.
- 6:31Speaker 1: But now.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We have you here and I just want to say
- 6:36Speaker 2: thank you. I can actually finally say to your face,
- 6:38Speaker 2: thank you so much for that collaboration. That was incredible.
- 6:41Speaker 4: No, of course.
- 6:41Speaker 5: I mean, that's the power of, you know, like the
- 6:43Speaker 5: strength in, you know, coming together as organizations and just
- 6:49Speaker 5: such beautiful moments that it creates.
- 6:51Speaker 2: No, it's really, really cool. And I love these moments, really.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And I'm so glad you brought Alex because finally I
- 6:55Speaker 2: can say thanks.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I had to bring Alex because we had a catch-up
- 6:58Speaker 1: dinner last night because it's been a minute. And we
- 7:00Speaker 1: got chatting as we do, as you and I do.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And we got chatting about Prime Media Cares.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And the wonderful work they're doing with the safety parents,
- 7:14Speaker 1: which is such an important role that these people offer
- 7:18Speaker 1: to protect these children. Yes.
- 7:20Speaker 4: It's vital.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And take them out of horrific circumstances. And it's not
- 7:24Speaker 1: easy for the safety parents financially either. No.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And then Alex decided... Over to you, Alex.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I mean, look, when we get together, we just, you know, like,
- 7:34Speaker 5: I love how her mind works.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah, me too.
- 7:37Speaker 5: She starts strategizing. She just immediately is on calls trying
- 7:40Speaker 5: to get things together. And today we just sat down
- 7:43Speaker 5: just now. She's already got this whole, like, elaborate plan,
- 7:46Speaker 5: you know, and it's just... It's exciting stuff. This later
- 7:49Speaker 5: this year. Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Really? Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 4: So we can do another giveaway. Sorry. Okay. I can't wait. Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So, but that's why I said, I wish I invite,
- 7:57Speaker 2: I'm going to invite you to the next one. We
- 7:59Speaker 2: have to, but remember the safety parents program. It was,
- 8:01Speaker 2: it was so important and we took on Cape talk,
- 8:03Speaker 2: but I think what it was is that it was
- 8:04Speaker 2: a platform for people like-minded action, people to get together,
- 8:07Speaker 2: play paddle, but do it with great purpose and actually
- 8:10Speaker 2: bring the awareness to the cause as well, which is
- 8:12Speaker 2: more important for me is that I needed people to
- 8:14Speaker 2: hear that. Safety parents, I mean, we heard from Anami
- 8:18Speaker 2: who runs this program, like the stipend for parents, it's
- 8:22Speaker 2: so small. Like they can hardly, they literally are using
- 8:26Speaker 2: their own kids' funds and their own household's funds to
- 8:29Speaker 2: look after other kids.
- 8:31Speaker 4: So that's what really touched me.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I said, whatever they need from me, even if
- 8:35Speaker 2: I have to lose a paddle match to Cape Talk,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'll do it. So that's why, but it was really,
- 8:41Speaker 2: really powerful. And I'm so glad you took interest as well.
- 8:44Speaker 4: No, for sure. Thank you.
- 8:45Speaker 5: But yeah, exciting stuff here, Jackie.
- 8:48Speaker 1: It is.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's the power of collaboration, you know.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It is.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Us getting together.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And we have a good time together.
- 8:54Speaker 4: What is happening with you? No, I feel like you
- 8:56Speaker 4: two are hiding something. What's going on?
- 8:58Speaker 1: Alex would like to donate something to Prime Media Cares
- 9:02Speaker 1: for the Safety Parents Initiative. No.
- 9:04Speaker 5: I mean, we are 30 years this year in South Africa.
- 9:07Speaker 4: So, yeah, something along those lines.
- 9:09Speaker 1: What? What?
- 9:11Speaker 2: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> Sorry,
- 9:14Speaker 2: I'm going to get, whoo, don't let me get my
- 9:16Speaker 2: friend Trish on the line from Prime Media Cares. She
- 9:18Speaker 2: runs the entire thing and it's really connected to everybody
- 9:22Speaker 2: as part of Prime Media Broadcasting. It's an important arm
- 9:25Speaker 2: that really allows us to use this platform who people
- 9:28Speaker 2: support with such loyalty. And a lot like the Disc
- 9:31Speaker 2: and Better Rewards program, that's exactly how we kind of
- 9:34Speaker 2: had the Prime Media Cares connection because people support us
- 9:38Speaker 2: and that needs to be used as a platform for
- 9:40Speaker 2: us to really affect the communities we're in in the
- 9:43Speaker 2: most positive way. So what did you guys talk over dinner?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Because I'm very excited now.
- 9:49Speaker 4: What happened? What's happening?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Okay. So in light of 30 years, we're going to
- 9:52Speaker 1: just park that 30 years, 30 for 30, for a
- 9:54Speaker 1: little bit later in the year. But to start with
- 10:00Speaker 1: a smaller three, Alex, two Prime Media Cares would like
- 10:04Speaker 1: to donate.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Three. Washing machines.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Hisense washing machines.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Two Prime Media Cares.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Really?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Yeah, this was decided last night, actually. But thank you.
- 10:16Speaker 4: You know what?
- 10:17Speaker 2: It's because Jackie and I were obsessed with the one
- 10:19Speaker 2: time we gave her all the washing machines. But thank
- 10:20Speaker 2: you so much, Alex, to you and Hisense for doing that.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And you know what? That's the thing.
- 10:24Speaker 2: A washing machine, I know it sounds like just a unit,
- 10:27Speaker 2: but the pressure that those parents feel. A safety parent
- 10:30Speaker 2: does still feel pressure. You are literally looking after somebody
- 10:33Speaker 2: else's child for the betterment of the child. These are
- 10:36Speaker 2: selfless people that open their homes and and their family
- 10:40Speaker 2: units to these kids to make sure they have some
- 10:42Speaker 2: normality to continue the success that they deserve in their life.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Because they've been pulled out of circumstances where the parents
- 10:49Speaker 2: were doing drugs, the parents were abusive. They were living
- 10:52Speaker 2: with older brothers and sisters who unfortunately went off the
- 10:55Speaker 2: rails and the Department of Social Development have to pull
- 10:58Speaker 2: them out of those circumstances. So you can imagine the
- 11:00Speaker 2: pressure on that home. And a lot of these safety
- 11:02Speaker 2: parents actually have kids too. Imagine all of that, that
- 11:06Speaker 2: load of washing, but that load of pressure. So I
- 11:08Speaker 2: think that donation is going to go a long way
- 11:11Speaker 2: to make sure that pressure is alleviated.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Thank you so much. Lighten their loads. Yes, man. Yo,
- 11:17Speaker 4: I really appreciate that. Thank you. You guys had a
- 11:19Speaker 4: nice dinner.
- 11:19Speaker 3: We had such a good dinner.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I love having dinner with Jackie. We had a
- 11:23Speaker 2: good dinner. But honestly, thank you so much for that, Alex,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and to you, Jackie, for always... opening your mind up
- 11:30Speaker 2: to new opportunities and ways for us to really look
- 11:33Speaker 2: after our community. And, of course, we don't owe it
- 11:36Speaker 2: to people like Alex and Hisense, but we owe it
- 11:39Speaker 2: to the people who are part of the Disc Game
- 11:40Speaker 2: Better Rewards Program because you don't even realize that when
- 11:44Speaker 2: you go to a disc game and you fold that basket,
- 11:46Speaker 2: that eventually becomes a trolley.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Trust me, I know. This is what happens. You swipe...
- 11:51Speaker 4: You know, and you do your thing.
- 11:53Speaker 2: And, you know, every one of those swipes, they actually count.
- 11:56Speaker 2: It gives us a stockpile to really make sure that
- 11:59Speaker 2: change can happen in the community.
- 12:00Speaker 4: So that's power right there, Jackie.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Thank you. And you see, you also get to win
- 12:05Speaker 1: because now you get to give Prime Media Cares the
- 12:07Speaker 1: washing machines.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Are you saying I get to give it like from
- 12:11Speaker 2: our side? So it's not really like we lost.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah, K-Talk did their thing yesterday. They're no losers.
- 12:15Speaker 4: I'm calling. I'm calling Trish from Primary Cares. I'm doing that.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Jackie, thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate
- 12:21Speaker 2: you so much. And Alex, always good to see you.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And long shall this collaboration with regard to action continue
- 12:28Speaker 2: because the community needs action.
- 12:30Speaker 4: They don't need talk. They need action.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And we are going to do that together along with
- 12:34Speaker 2: our partners, which are actually every person that walks into
- 12:38Speaker 2: a DISCIM. That's a partner right there with their Better
- 12:40Speaker 2: Rewards program. So Very exciting times ahead, Jackie. And I
- 12:43Speaker 2: look forward to seeing you again for our next project.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Excellent.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And on the paddle court.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
- 12:48Speaker 4: There's that. Oh, by the way, you're invited next time.
- 12:50Speaker 4: And I'm joining next time.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Please.
- 12:51Speaker 4: I'm playing with Cassidy.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Yes, we are. Okay, Alex and I versus Cassidy and Jackie.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Done deal.
- 12:56Speaker 2: This is your flash drive, KFM 94.5. And just remember,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I know for a fact that you have a disc cam.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Better Rewards card. I know you're part of the program.
- 13:04Speaker 2: If not, walk into your local disc game and actually
- 13:07Speaker 2: get it sorted out. And I want to just reiterate
- 13:09Speaker 2: one thing, is that every swipe counts.
