- 1:21Well, now it's time for today's episode of The Saint. The original
- 1:26air date is March the fourth of nineteen fifty one, and the title is
- 1:32the What Not What's Got Hot? Huh? I wonder if they were in
- 1:36a competition with the lineup writers for coming up with the most bizarre episode titles.
- 1:42Well, at any rate, here's now is today's episode of The Saint.
- 2:07The Adventures of the Saints starring Vincent Price the Saint, based on characters
- 2:23created by Leslie Travers and known to millions from books, magazines, and motion
- 2:28pictures, The Robinhood of Modern Crime now comes transcribe to radio, starring Hollywood's
- 2:32brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as the Saint and mister Templar an't, Louis,
- 2:44you look tired and I am a bit been working or something or something
- 2:49that is I've been playing chess. Uh huh, so, wife, Phy,
- 2:53lipstick off your mouth the lipstick, Thanks, Lewis, You're welcome.
- 2:59I'm a chess player. Don't look good. It was a very close game
- 3:04that I can figure out for myself. Hey, look, somebody's moving out
- 3:07of your house. You see there's a moving van park in front. He
- 3:09yes, so there is. I better stop here. They're still looking fiture.
- 3:14I hope it's the people who have the apartment over mine. Well,
- 3:16what's the matter with them? Large feet? Uh huh, Hey that's time.
- 3:21What that desk they just put in a van? It looked familiar.
- 3:23All furniture nowadays looks familiar. Oh they're all finished. I'll pull up.
- 3:29Don't bother do me. How much are you? Hey, mister Temple,
- 3:35what's the matter. I'm beginning to realize why it looked so familiar? Why
- 3:38because it was my desk. Look, mister Temple, you must have made
- 3:49a mistake. You're not moving. I didn't make a mistake, but it's
- 3:52ridiculous, mister Temple, Yes, it was my desk, not to mention
- 4:00my table, my chairs, my Hey, Louie, did you get the
- 4:02license number? That truck? Noll? But it belonged to the North America
- 4:06Van Lines. How do you know sets on the side? Oh? And
- 4:09I look it up in the phone book. Room looks awful naked. You
- 4:15know, furniture does a lot to fill up a room. Yeah, I've
- 4:18got it here. Huh North American forty five Columbus phone number. Well,
- 4:28anyway, we know one thing about where your furniture is gone? We do?
- 4:30Yeah, North America. Oh fine, that's a big help. North
- 4:34American. Good evening, Good evening. My name is Simon Temper. I
- 4:36have a complaint and you want the manager? I do you do? His
- 4:40name is George H. Smith. Smith. Oh very well, well let
- 4:43me talk to him. He's not in Sorry, Well you might be able
- 4:46to help me. You see, my complaint has to do with my furniture.
- 4:49It's just been moved by you people. Didn't we move it far enough?
- 4:54You shouldn't have moved it at all. We're so enthusiastic. I think
- 4:57you'd better check your records, find out who order to the van and where
- 5:00the furniture is to be delivered. Very well, sir, just hold on
- 5:03having trouble, mister Tumpany, No, louis just whimsy from truck drivers.
- 5:09Will show them who will Oscaby's in New York. The whimsy belongs to us.
- 5:12And furthermore, mister Templar, yes, you ordered your furniture moved.
- 5:16I did, paid for in advance, turned the key over to our men
- 5:19and asked for rapid service. And I certainly got it. And where did
- 5:24I order the furniture? Move to the Sprague Furniture Galleries Sprague. But he
- 5:28handles antiques. My furniture is modern. Maybe it's aged rapidly. Good night,
- 5:33Good night, sir. Come on, Louis, we're going to a
- 5:36gallery. We're in a hurry. Yes, you might say we've got to
- 5:40get a move on, Louis. I'm I'm puzzled. I'm ahead of you.
- 5:53My furniture couldn't have been stolen for the money it would bring. It
- 5:56wasn't that valuable. Too great a risk was involved. So somebody did it
- 6:00for fun? Oh hardly. Why was it stolen tonight, not last week,
- 6:03last month or last year? Maybe the guys that swiped it were too
- 6:06busy. Also, half a dozen pieces were taken. Among them are particularly
- 6:11worthless whatnot? What whatnot? And who's on third of whatnot? Louis is
- 6:15a Victorian monstrosity which shouldn't happen to a tree. The point I'm making,
- 6:20though, is that I've had that what not only a few days. Uh.
- 6:25Well, that means they were after the what not? So why did
- 6:28they swipe the other stuff? Confuse the issue to make me think it was
- 6:30just an ordinary burglary to keep my attention away from the what not. Maybe
- 6:35it's worth a lot of money, huh. And it's worth exactly what I
- 6:38paid for its seventeen dollars, so that don't figure. Where'd you get it?
- 6:42Anyway? Oddly enough, Louis at the Sprague Gallery. Oh that gallery
- 6:56don't look open? Come on. Sprague sleeps in the back. He has
- 7:01a small apartment there and there's no truck around then, must have already unloaded,
- 7:06you know. Mister Sprague gona wash his windows. Yeah, I can't
- 7:12see a thing inside. Must be a bell around, however, Oh yeah,
- 7:15nooxcuse one sounds like an antique bell. Antique or not. It should
- 7:20have wakened mister Sprague. So maybe somebody should order tell'em when the cord
- 7:26of it ain't wake him? No, h hey, yeah, the door
- 7:30was open and they may have forgotten to lock it. He light him match
- 7:35man, okay, and thanks, oh oh now we got light. But
- 7:44hey, there's you'll find it chures, so it is best table, couch
- 7:47and and and then the what not. Yeah, truckman evidently delivered the stuff
- 7:51in the left, But uh, where's Sprague? Maybe not the back room?
- 7:57Huh? You know, well we'll see. M oh the lights around
- 8:03in here kind of a cluttered place for a guy to live in. Not
- 8:07only cluttered, Louis, it looks as though a hurricane had made more than
- 8:09a passing visit. Yeah, it's a temple. What is staring back here
- 8:16behind the bed? Huh? Somebody besides the hurricane also visited. Knife is
- 8:24still in his chest. He ain't noticing it. He's dead. Oh hey,
- 8:30hey, there's a car. It seems to be in the back.
- 8:35He's gone. So I hope is the killer come on back in? We
- 8:41frightened him off, Louis, speak for yourself. I don't frighten babies.
- 8:43But he was still here. Why Evidently he hadn't finished his job. But
- 8:48what job, Louis? Well, you said the place looked upset. Maybe
- 8:54he was searching it, that's true, but searching for what the furniture was
- 8:56delivered? That truckman left the eye Gods are that by the time Sprague was
- 9:01already dead? Very well? Then what could the killer have been looking for?
- 9:05The what not was here whenever he wanted it? For Louis, I
- 9:11didn't do it. You know that whatnot muster A had a history. Sprague
- 9:13probably has records showing where he purchased his furniture. Uh huh. So the
- 9:18killer hung around trying to cover the back trail of the whatnap? Huh?
- 9:22After all, he didn't expect us to notice the truck leaving your house with
- 9:26your furniture. We we ain't supposed to have been here so quick. Is
- 9:31that good? Only if we find what the killer didn't find only I give
- 9:35up. What are we doing now? We do just what the killer did
- 9:39before we interrupted him. Louis search for mister Sprague's ledgers. We go through
- 9:43him. Huh Yeah, and maybe they'll tell us why a man had to
- 9:46die for of whatnot? And it's not in this one. Yes, Hey,
- 10:00mister Temple, I think I got it. Oh, let me see
- 10:05Victorian whatnot? Yeah, missus Susan Carter hill Roade, Cresdale, New York,
- 10:11Cresdale. That's only half a dozen miles north of the Bronx. This
- 10:13is strange. He doesn't seem to have paid her anything at all for the
- 10:18what night. Maybe she paid him and we could phone. But you know,
- 10:20Louie, about the only thing on our side is the element of time.
- 10:24We're moving faster than the killer anticipated. Therefore no we go north.
- 10:37You know something, mister Templar. The trouble with the country is it so
- 10:41far from the city. I never thought of that. We'll think about It's
- 10:43true. I'd rather think about missus Susan Carter. Spray got that what not
- 10:50from her about a week ago. Yeah, and I brought it from him
- 10:52three days ago. But will she be able to help it. Why not?
- 10:56Was her? What? Not sure? But if she knew anything about
- 11:00it, anything that would make it worth murdering someone for, she'd never have
- 11:03passed it on to Sprague in the first place. We may be chasing a
- 11:07wild goose. Lily, who needs a wild goose? A wild gander?
- 11:11Flow down, Louie. I think it's that house on the corner. Okay,
- 11:20Yeah, this is it. Oh, it's a large house. It
- 11:24looks it looks like there ought to be bats flying around it. It's not
- 11:28so bad. It's not a house most people would prefer to live in,
- 11:31make a wonderful place to die in. What am I saying? I have
- 11:35to frighten myself? Yet? Lights turn somewhere inside? It must keep late
- 11:41hours. Let's go some fun they have in these country houses. Yeah,
- 11:48I think it's time we rain. You know, I'm wondering what she didn't
- 11:54They looked alike, just went out inside. I gotta feeling nobody is gonna
- 12:00opened that door? All right, all right, all right, Sorry I
- 12:07was wrong? But who opened it? It doesn't matter if we can get
- 12:11in, Okay, except I would be happier if somebody at least it opened.
- 12:16Who's like the House of the Dead. Stop making up phrases like it
- 12:22came from some place down this hallway. You're running in the wrong direction.
- 12:26Were running hawway. Look, it must be this door. It's the only
- 12:28one along the hallway. Does it open you? Hello, I'm Simon Temporary.
- 12:37This is Louis. What do you want? We heard you scream.
- 12:43There must have been a large mouse. It was a large scream, missus
- 12:46Carter. But Clare Wayne, I apologize. How'd you get in? Well?
- 12:52The front door opened by itself, a very mysterious effect, making things
- 12:56up. Not really, could we see missus Carter? Could you see miss
- 13:05Wayne? Come on? Yeah, I'm brought behind you, Claire Claire.
- 13:11Oh, I'm sorry. Neither of us is Claire? Are you mister Carter
- 13:15Carter? Me? No, No, I'm Harold Thompson, Susan's nephew.
- 13:18Oh, I'm Simon Templar, Louis Templar. Are you the saint? Yes?
- 13:22I am that. This is quite an honor for us. Thank you.
- 13:24Actually I wanted to speak to your ad it did. I said something
- 13:31amusing. You've no idea how amusing. I'll laugh about it all night.
- 13:37Hey, he's gone too, very restless type characters. Well, anyway,
- 13:43we're getting acquainted fash except with missus Carter. Large house, will have to
- 13:48look through all the rooms in it, if you will have to look even
- 13:50and father, than that'sh I didn't hear you come into the room. You
- 13:56walked softly. It's a habit of mine. The heel of the die was
- 14:00then a heavy footstep. It frightens him. Really a delusion of reference.
- 14:05I suspect they associate it with death coming for them. You're a doctor.
- 14:11I'm doctor thought, my name's Temper and missus lewis good evening, gentlemen,
- 14:15how do you dook? You're a missus Carter's position. Yes, she's ill,
- 14:18then no, he's not at all ill. Whether i'd like to speak
- 14:22to her at once about whatnot that she gave to an antique dealer named Sprague.
- 14:28Seems a trivial reasons that brought you out here at this hour. But
- 14:33what not in itself is perhaps a trivial thing, doctor, But murder isn't
- 14:37murder? Mister Sprague? Oh, at what time? Was he? Probably
- 14:41around eight this evening? It's interesting. At eight I was out in my
- 14:46car on my way here, but I took a long way around might have
- 14:50been closed to stop in the city. At eight, Harold Thompson had not
- 14:54as yet reached this house. Of course, why he wasn't then, I
- 14:58cannot say. At eight Claire Way was of the movie she told me earlier.
- 15:01Well perhaps she was. Yeah, very interesting how he said where was
- 15:07missus Cotter at eight o'clock? Well she was? Why she is now for
- 15:11the nurse and attendance? I thought she said she wasn't ill she isn't she
- 15:16was? Oh, I see she's dead. Then she's dead. Interesting.
- 15:22Three people might have known what the mystery of the what not was, and
- 15:26of them two are dead. The third is a murderer. Susan Carter was
- 15:31an old woman with a weak heart, meaning her death was natural. Yes,
- 15:37I don't sneer it coincidence, doctor Thorne, But under the circumstances,
- 15:41I'd like to be sure it was coincidence. Well, of whose I can't
- 15:45quarrel with you about that. I've had a thought or two about Susan's death
- 15:48myself. And she wasn't stab to death. The heart did fail, mister
- 15:52Templar. I'm not a young man anymore. I'm tired, I'm all confused
- 15:58and before going in it. Further than this thing, I'd like the rest.
- 16:03Would it be awesome? Too much of you to spend the night here?
- 16:06M mister Pemp. I think it's very hospitable. Plenty of room.
- 16:08This is a large house. Suppose we all go to bed in the morning.
- 16:14Perhaps they shadows with all the flat Well, you think it will be
- 16:27comfortable in this room. I I know the house quite well, you see.
- 16:33I I played in it as a child. There was a time when
- 16:37I thought that perhaps Susan and I would live in it together. But uh,
- 16:41I uh married someone else. Good night, Good night, doctor,
- 16:45Yeah, good night. It's kind of broken up about missus Carter's dead.
- 16:52Huh, yes, he is. Could be an act. Uh, it
- 16:55seemed genuine, you know the way. Nobody in this house has an alibi.
- 17:00Chris Briggs, Dan, mister Temple, Let's go to sleep in the
- 17:03morning. I'll feel strong enough to be surprised. But right, all right,
- 17:08what could happen anyway? Mhm h lloy Temple? What what? What?
- 17:30What? What smells smoke house? Some fine? Come on, Luie
- 17:36co I'm right with you. Smoke he look, we got to warn the
- 17:41other. I'll get the ones the other side of the hall. The smokes
- 17:45getting awful thick, Miss Wayne, Miss Wayne, hmmm, it was asleep.
- 17:53Go downstairs now at the house quick. The house happened to be on
- 17:56fire, all right? Hey, no, he tempt Oh there I got
- 18:03both doctor phone and Harold comes to it. They're on the way down.
- 18:07We better get downstairs too. No, not yet, but we've gotta p
- 18:10reliving thing out of the hall. Yeah, but you forgot the dead,
- 18:27not the throwing. The other men. What happened to them, my dear,
- 18:32we're safety. You must have duck down the back way. No,
- 18:36could they come now carrying something? That's something happen they're carrying the course.
- 18:42We're enough away from the house the way we can put her down now,
- 18:45okay, mister Template, she's dead. Don't understand she's dead? Yes,
- 18:51sorry, no, Miss Wayne, But I understand something else too. That
- 18:56fire wasn't for our benefit, It was for hers, Louie. The lower
- 19:00half of the house hasn't been touched yet. I'm going back into phone the
- 19:03fire department. Maybe I better no go to stay here to make sure that
- 19:07no one harms her, Miss Wayne, No, Lily, missus Carr,
- 19:22Thank you Collinson you and the boys did a fine job. Led we're able
- 19:26to save the lower part of the house. Okay, boys, you know
- 19:30that Crusdale fire departmer named bed No, I mean they as well all go
- 19:34inside. I'll take me to Carter. I I can't share exactly follow your
- 19:41mental processes, Temple, is that important? I don't know. Why did
- 19:47you have to disturb Missus Carter. She's far beyond any disturbances I could create.
- 19:52What Claire meant was why lugger around the way you are. It's a
- 19:56very simple answer, you see. She's a very important clue to what murder.
- 20:04Oh thanks, sorry, Now this room will do as well as any
- 20:11the couch for Missus Carter. Mister Temple, I think I shall insist upon
- 20:17an explanation. We're all here, but we're not all here. What.
- 20:22Yes, it was with us when we arrived at the front door. But
- 20:26then yeah, he must have decided that other climes would be healthier climes for
- 20:29him. At any rate, you're not saying, Harold, I'm saying nothing
- 20:32about that at the moment, Doctor Thorne. Does Claire resemble Missus Carter as
- 20:38Missus Carter was when she was a colonel of course you're a cute temper.
- 20:44Janngel gorss, Yes, it's an amazing resemblance. Mm. Yes, it
- 20:48would have to be. I'm not sure very amazing. We were very close
- 20:52to the latter. That's not the point. Is someone burgled my apartment,
- 20:57stole a number of pieces of furniture. Among those pieces was a worthless what
- 21:03not, since it was taken along with the others. The others were merely
- 21:06camouflaged. The burglar was primarily after the what not. Well, what connection
- 21:11is there between furniture and death? That what not, doctor Thorne, until
- 21:17a week ago, belonged to missus Carter. Oh, missus Carter, who
- 21:21may have died naturally or who may have been killed. I told you how
- 21:26heart failed. Almost anything might have brought it off, Yes, doctor,
- 21:29almost anything. Perhaps a tiny dose of poison, so tiny that it wouldn't
- 21:33of itself be fatal, so tiny that it would produce no symptoms of poisoning,
- 21:38but it would strain an already weak heart, wouldn't it. Oh,
- 21:45it's possible, more than possible. It has to be so. Otherwise,
- 21:48why the fire in the upper part of the house. A fire therefore,
- 21:52that couldn't have been accidental. No cooking or heating is done up there.
- 21:56Well, maybe somebody was after the living Louis. No, no doors were
- 22:00locked. None of us would drug the house itself as easy to escape from
- 22:03fire. Had only one purpose to destroy the body of Missus Carter, to
- 22:07destroy the possibility of an autopsy on that body. I'm tired, Oh tired,
- 22:17I'd better go home. No, not quite yet, doctor. Missus
- 22:22Carter was wealthy. Well, no one knows she She never kept money in
- 22:27the bank, because, always, of course, been the theory that she
- 22:30hid all the money somewhere in this house. She'd mean nasty. I don't
- 22:33mind telling you that. Harold and I searched all through the house looking for
- 22:37that money. Did you find him? No? Do you need money,
- 22:41doctor? His wife spends more than he earns. Of course he does,
- 22:44I do, Harold does. There wasn't many money. Was Missus Carter a
- 22:48sentimental woman, doctor, No, No, she was a bit of woman.
- 22:53She hated well, yes, and she was very ill. She knew
- 23:00she was surrounded by Yes, vulsure's waiting for her to die so they could
- 23:03pick up her old bones or whatever money clung to them. You're a way
- 23:10of putting it. Well, it's an accurate way. And now that you're
- 23:14know, mister Templar, may I go home? Yes, yes, after
- 23:19you answer one question, that question being somewhat earlier this evening, when I
- 23:23asked you about the possibility of missus Carter's death having been murdered, you denied
- 23:27that possibility. I still or perhaps I do no longer deny. However,
- 23:33I have my question. At that time you said she wasn't stabbed to death,
- 23:38meaning that mister Sprague, of whose murder I had just informed you,
- 23:42was stabbed to death. But Doctor Thorne, there are many ways in which
- 23:47a man can be killed. Your question, then, is how did I
- 23:51know that Sprague had been killed with a knife. Yes, Doctor, I
- 23:56don't think I shall answer that question. I'm sorry, Louis, when you
- 24:00get on the phone the cops, I believe. Okay, sit down,
- 24:04doctor Thorne. You you won't need me anymore? Mmm? No, miss
- 24:11way, I'll go any other room. This one's ugly. No, what's
- 24:17man just caught my stocking from the edge of the chair. Oh that's too
- 24:19bad. They're they're pretty stocking. They should be the nylon across the fortunes.
- 24:26Good night, mister Temples good night. Well, if all the cops
- 24:32they're on the way, mister Templan, no good Louis. Hey, doctor
- 24:37Thorn, it looks so good now. You know, if miners would clap
- 24:41master padlocks on their lips, a lot of them would be better off.
- 24:45They wouldn't give themselves away, and detectives would have a heart time, no,
- 24:48Lily, no matter how securely a murderer's lips may be locked. I
- 24:53uh, coin a phrase, murder will out. Yeah. But if doctor
- 24:57Thorn hadn't made that slip about the st you've never been able to pin the
- 25:00killing on him, that's true. But then you see, doctor Thorn didn't
- 25:03kill anything. The Templar cops are going to be here pretty soon. For
- 25:21the last ten minutes, nobody has said nothing, but doctor Thorne is undoubtedly
- 25:25didn't think he didn't kill anybody. What has he got to think about about?
- 25:29Who did? Oh uh, mister Templar, Yes, doctor, you're
- 25:33quite sure, Yes I am. There's no hope of none. Well,
- 25:40it was a resemblance, of course, a resemblance to a woman that i'd
- 25:45you'll permit, an old and tired man, and old and tired cliche of
- 25:51course, a woman that I had love and lost. I don't get it,
- 25:57Harold did it didn't not unless he wears nylon stocking. Nylon stocks maybe,
- 26:03but stocks. Why are you staring at me like that letter? It's
- 26:11late, doctor Thorne means he he followed you to Sprague's earlier tonight. He
- 26:17saw a Sprague's body with the knife in it. Well, cozy did he
- 26:22had to to kill him. He also saw you leave when Louis and I
- 26:26got to the gallery, leave before you could find the record of where the
- 26:30what not originally came from, find it and destroy it lest it lead to
- 26:33this house. And you Oh, yes, right, doctor Thorn. You
- 26:40see miss Wayne. Even now, the doctor won't give you away because you
- 26:42look so much like the woman he loved. No, he did, and
- 26:48he killed. No. A doctor wouldn't have used poison to kill his own
- 26:51patient, too obvious, a breath of suspicion, and he wouldn't have a
- 26:53chance. No. No, his disappearance half an hour ago proved his innocence.
- 26:59Wa Wait, where do you think he went me? He didn't stop
- 27:02to tell He went to Spragues to get at that whatnot because he realized that
- 27:06his aunt had hidden their money in it, hadn't she, miss Wayne?
- 27:10You do? The police will find it wherever you've didn't it. The policeman's
- 27:14going. The police are, and that will be proof enough. It's a
- 27:19pity and all because of a what not such an ugly thing. It's all
- 27:33right. So the cops found the doll in the girl's suitcase downstairs in the
- 27:36hall. Cluss. So she killed her aunt and spray. But something must
- 27:41have tipped you off before you could be so sure. Nylon stockings, Lewis,
- 27:44Oh, we're back to dolls again, all right? What about nylon
- 27:48stockings, Louis, whoever poisoned missus Carter was the one who set fire to
- 27:52the house in order to destroy the corpse and prevent an autopsy. Yeah?
- 27:56Well, when I warned Claire Wayne about the fire, she said she'd been
- 28:00asleep. Yeah. Later on, after I'd confronted doctor Thorne with what seemed
- 28:04to be his guilt, she left the room. On the way out,
- 28:07she caught his stockings on a chair. So, Louis, how much do
- 28:12you know about women everything? Do women go to sleep with nylon stockings on?
- 28:18Oh? The answers No. Therefore, Claire Wayne had not been asleep.
- 28:22She'd lied about that with no reason unless she had started the fire.
- 28:26So she started the fire, So she poisoned the ranch typed sprague. Yeah,
- 28:30okay, only one thing more, what Louis, remember when we got
- 28:33to the Cotta house and rang the bell and and the door opened all by
- 28:37itself. Yes, I remember, never mind remembering? Explain? Oh,
- 28:40probably only a warped door, Louis. The house was very old. Hey,
- 28:45I just thought of something. Yeah, watch mister templar. When I
- 28:47get home, I'll be bedless. Oh gee, that's right. You ain't
- 28:49got no furniture. Why I should drop you off at the hotel? No,
- 28:53thank you, Louis. Maybe I can find a good chess game.

- 30:29Old Time Radio, Welcome back. Well. What I liked about this episode
- 30:41is how they played with the radio convention. You know, when it came
- 30:48to radio detectives, How aha you said something that gives it away that you're
- 30:53the murderer. I like how they just kind of faked us out on that.
- 30:59Again, very clever twist with something different actually serving as the final determining
- 31:07clue and also a very common sense clue, but at any rate that will
- 31:11actually do it. For today. We'll be back tomorrow with the adventures of
- 31:15Ellery Queen, and join us next week for another episode of The Saint.
