- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Look, if you We're so glad you're here.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I'm you know what?
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I'm really glad you're here too.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: I'm really glad you're here.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: And everyone else, too.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: This is my gosh.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Well, you're gonna have your editing cut out for you today, aren't you?
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: There's a real reason these things take a solid hour to edit and go through.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: We'll all try to be flawless moving forward.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: But today, as it is an unnamed Evelyn Day.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: And uh Evelyn, why don't you kick us off?
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: I got a good story for you that I have told on my own podcast, uh, but I've never told it on any other podcast.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And I don't even actually know if I've told it to you.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So this is uh it's a good story.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: If you want to hear the story that is that that is the first time it's been told, and I'm having a conversation with my friend Jill, you can just at the end of this episode bip on over to the Someone Everyone podcast.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: And it is, I think the episode's called Jill Learned About Bow Hunting on the Way to Japan.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I think that's what that episode's called.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so I'm gonna tell the story today.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: So it's new ears, um, new listenership, new reactions, new lessons learned.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna set the scene for you.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: In the early aughts, I would probably even say 99, 2000, 2001.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: I was working in a small town in a theater playhouse.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: And believe it or not, um, I was not an actor.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I know it's probably like just blowing everyone's mind at this point.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Pause, pause, pause, pause.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Because nobody knows that you're not an actor.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: And so here you are.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: You are you are actively crapping on yourself in front of me and in front of our audience for a reason that is going to be mysterious to everybody else.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: When you say, obviously, I'm not an actor.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: What are you, how are you insulting yourself?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I was going to say, I leave that to Nick because you are the theater major.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Well, you could be great at it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: God knows you got that voice.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: What's the problem?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: I have that, I have that sultry theater voice.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: No, you can sing is what I'm saying.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, I meant okay, okay.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: People sing in the theater sometimes.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know if you've ever attended um a musical production, a musical theater production, but it's a it's a mishmash of uh dramatic acting and songwriting, and dancing.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not a triple threat, I will be honest.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, so not obviously, I am not an actor.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And I was working in the box office.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So I was answering all the phone calls.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: People would phone in.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: This is a time when you were not ordering your tickets online, you were calling the box office, you were calling Evelyn and reading your credit card number over the phone like a cave person.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: You were, you totally were.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: And I would and I would um type that into the old computer and your order would process.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I would tell you what tickets you got.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: You and I would figure that out together.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: It seems archaic, but it was pretty relational.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: And I gotta say, you know what?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: It was a good job.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I was really good at it.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: I would get, I was one of the only fucking Wayne Gretzky of taking credit card numbers over the phone and assigning seats.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: We don't like Wayne Gretzky anymore.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: We don't like him.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Oh no, why not?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Because he he's mega Oh no.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I know, he's gone to the dark side.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't like Wayne.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Oh Wayne the Pain.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's gone to the dark side.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: That's a shame.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Well, that's he's your he's your problem now.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Just add it to the heap.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: So I was pretty good at it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I was one of the, I think I was maybe at the time the only bilingual person working there.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: So if we ever got a call for someone speaking French.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Sorry, the only what?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: What what's your problem?
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Bilingual?
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: What is the what is what language is that?
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: I was the only person.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Not one.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: What language is bilingual?
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Number two, Wayne Gretzzy's Canadian.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: So he's actually your problem.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: No, he is Canadian.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: He is Canadian, but he's a big fan of the of the P brain that's currently at the helm of your country.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: That's generous to that guy's brain.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fair.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, what's the what's the beef with bilingual?
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Say it again.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Who taught you that?
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know what's right or wrong anymore.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I think this podcast has taken me to a level of self-loathing.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I did not know.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I didn't know, I just is it a Canadian pronunciation?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Bilingual.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, you can do it slow.
- 5:24unknown: Bilingual.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Gwill.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: It's G-U-A-L, isn't it not?
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: It says American pronunciation.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Let's see.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: But the British pronunciation is the same.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Uh let's see.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Bilingual.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Bilingual.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: So I say the word, like just I don't know.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'll make a compilation episode that we'll put behind a paywall of all the words Evelyn just doesn't know how to say.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And yes, Evelyn was a teacher.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: And yes, Evelyn was in charge of Evelyn was a t a foreign language teacher.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Would you not would you not break my balls if I if I was like, well, you know what note comes after G.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: B.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Well, no, because that's blatant.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: That's blatantly wrong.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Do you mean blatantly wrong?
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Blatantly.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: My gosh, that was so fast.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: That was so quick.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Winning of you.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: That was excellent, blatantly.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That's kind of like like misled.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Like it's shot to the heart.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Shot to the heart.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: So I I was the only French-speaking person in the office, in the box office.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Just pulling us right back on the highway here.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: It's for me more than you.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And so anytime someone would call in speaking French, I would uh I would I would help them.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: I would take their order.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: You know, I had, as you and I've talked before, I started learning French in grade two and did an immersion program.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: But all of a sudden, when someone's reading their credit card to you over the phone, you second guess, you're like, I don't even know numbers anymore at this point, right?
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Because like the stakes are really high.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Anyway, that was this is not a part of the story.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So, so at some point this is not part of this.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: I'm prepared for you to be like, okay, so imagine this the world's angriest French Canadian person is convinced they're getting into South Pacific tonight.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Well, newsflash Jacques, you're not.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Meanwhile, like this guy from Alberta whose whose credit card accidentally got charged because it was Mile Deux Cap-Vinneuve.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And oh yeah, that's gosh, that's exactly what it was like down there.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: You get all sorts of crusty people.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And let me tell you, if you put an order through and charge them an amount that was greater than what they anticipated, it didn't matter if you were Cliff from Alberta or Jacques from Saint Louis de Haha, they you could sense their displeasure.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: It was palpable.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: So at some point, so at one point I remember this box office, because it was, and by the box office, I mean I was upstairs by the in the theater lobby during showtime, right?
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: I'd be there an hour before, and people would come and they'd have, you know, I'd give them their tickets if they were held at Will Call or you know, if they wanted to buy next season's tickets or next show's tickets, I'd be up there.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: But typically during the week, I was down at a cubby at a little cubicle with a phone and a headset near the municipal office, which was in the basement of this same building.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And the municipal office was typically um doing various jobs associated to the municipal government, is what it was.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: But I got a I really liked them.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: I got along with them.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: And at the same time, my friend Jill, who we've had on this podcast, who I went to Japan with, she worked there as well.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So Jill and I kind of worked opposite shifts.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: I would be done for the day, you know.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: She worked graveyard.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Graveyard.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Graveyard at the playoffs.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, basically.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: And there was the odd time that we would have a little bit of overlap.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Um, so we would see each other and then just kind of get the other one up to speed.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: But there was this one day that Jill and I, where I'm leading with this, are the only two people in the world who experienced this.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: We have this is a this is a friendship solidifying moment that we shared.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Oh God, you guys hooked up.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, and this is how we find out about it on this podcast.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: It's time to call her up.
- 9:34unknown: I can't believe it.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: We've kept this under wraps for years.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Actually, what I the story I'm about to tell you is just is way better.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Like you're you're imagining small.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: You're imagining small.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: So this this uh this day, this particular day, the the municipal office was all a buzz.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: The phones were ringing off the hook.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: We were getting people come in, coming in, we like the ladies were like just humming, talking, like there was so much going on.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And I was like, what is what is happening today?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Turns out there was a a man who lived in a home in like just a house rather in Petrolia at the end of one of the streets who had some um disturbing outside art.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Have I ever told you this story?
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: You have not?
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: No.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Oh gosh, you're never gonna see where this is going.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: He was at the end of one of the streets.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: There was a family across the road from him that had small children.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: They were really bothered by this.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: People from all like word spreads like wildfire in a small town, right?
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: We know that.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So this the phones were ringing off the hook, people were complaining.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: I didn't know what was going on, I didn't really understand.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And people would sometimes come in to this municipal office, whether it's to pay for something or get paperwork for something.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: So it's not like there was no outside traffic.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: I remember distinctly being at my computer, typing in some orders, and I heard someone come in.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And this person looked like the grim reaper.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Oh God.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: And I remember thinking, who is this person?
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: And it turns out it was the man that lived inside the house.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: He decided to come into the municipal office.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Now, when you say he looked like the Grim Reaper, was he wearing a cloak and carrying a scythe?
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: A scythe.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Is that how you pronounce that?
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Speaking of not knowing how to pronounce it.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: You'd be my go-to source to find out how to pronounce it correctly.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: So if you don't know.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you asked.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: I was gonna I was gonna dress him from the top down, so I'm really glad you asked.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Um, we had a massive black hat.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Sorry, a black hat with a massive brim on it, all the way around.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Then we had black sunglasses.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: We had oh indoors.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yes, indoors.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: We had a uh gray beard and gray hair.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: We had a black shirt on, buttoned up to the top, we had a floor-length black leather coat and black boots.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, there might have been gloves.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't really remember, but he walked by my desk and I remember feeling a chill.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: I remember thinking dragged one bony finger across his shoulder blades, across my chubby jawline, and said, I'm coming for you.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: And so he was talking, and it was a very hushed, quiet conversation with one of the ladies at the end of the counter.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And obviously, they were talking about all the things, and she just kept saying, You you have to remove it.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: You have to remove it.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Oh my gosh, I still don't understand what's going on here.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: So eventually he leaves and he just kind of like he's not a fast walker.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Like, I really want you to picture him.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: It's almost like he was not to the right people anyway, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: But I'm saying, Hey yo, no, he just kind of drifted in and out, like it was very surreal.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And so I finally asked someone, what is the art?
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Because he like he art is his words, he kept saying it was art.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's that's the words I'm using only the word I'm using only because that was the word he used.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Okay, but at no point is this actual art.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: So it turns out, and again, it's hard to tell what what was a rumor and what was real at this point.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: It turns out he had attached animal heads to the trees in his yard.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: I've never ever heard you attach that.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Animal heads.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Like skulls or like no Nick Fresh Heads.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Oh and I want to tell you what kinds of animals.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Uh there was a cow.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: There was a goat and a pig, and probably something else.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: But those were the three that I saw.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And you might say, Oh my gosh, you saw them?
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna tell you how I saw them.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: So during this time, what this was a day, because I didn't believe this, and again, we're pretty convinced this is rumor mill happening.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: I'm like, now there's no way he attached animal heads to the trees in his front yard because that's disgusting and cruel.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And where's the rest of the animals?
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: The animal is what I'm gonna do so many questions, right?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: I know you can't even, there's not enough time in this podcast to figure it out.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: So that was a crossover Jill and Ev day.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: That was a day when we had some time in between, and our manager said, Why don't you go suss that out?
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Because we wanted to.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Oh so we jumped into Jill's parents' baby blue Chevy Astro minivan and went for a drive.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And at this point, like we knew what street it was on.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: We were told it was the very end, it was on the east side of the street, and we're not seeing anything.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: We're literally not seeing anything.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: There's nothing.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what are people getting their titties?
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: What do I have to do to see an animal head nailed to a tree around here?
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: What do I have to do to see a Japanese maple with a goat face on it around here?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So we're we're driving slowly down this street, right?
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: And we're rubber necking side to side.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: We're not seeing anything.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And so Jill's like, okay, I'm just gonna turn around in this driveway.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: And it must have been dark at this point because this is a very vivid memory of mine.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So she said, I'm just gonna turn around and we'll go back down the street.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: We turned around in this driveway, and you can guess that that was the exact house with the animal faces on the trees.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: And those I have the most vivid memory of the headlights of her parents' minivan shining right on a cow face attached to this tree.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: And she and I screamed at a decibel level that that van has never heard since.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Because we just, it was like a spotlight on this face, and it was like a face with the tongue out, and there was still fur on it, and we were like losing our mind.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: How did you all still have it in you to hook up after that?
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: It's fucking weird.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: So we're screaming, and it's like she forgot how to drive in that moment.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Like she's she's trying to reverse, but it's in park, and we're like we're trying to reverse, but she's going forward, and we're it it would have been a perfect addition to the Dumb and Dumber movies because it was entirely it was such physical comedy, I can only imagine.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And the Grim Reaper's like another satisfied customer.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, basically.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: So there were trees with animal heads on them, and we we also wondered where is the rest of each of these animals?
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Like, right?
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: How is how is he getting them to stay up there?
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Like this is this is the summertime.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: We just still don't know.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: No, we still don't know.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: We have no we have no idea at all.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Is that where the story ends?
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: That's unacceptable.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: So, did he have to take it down?
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Did you hear about it the next day?
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Like, what was the how did it end up?
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Like, well, he did have to take them down.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: He didn't take them down right away.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: He didn't take them down, and that place, that that property now has a massive I mean he must be gone by now.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: That was 25 years ago.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, although he probably had enough meat to live on for many, many years, you know, after that.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: I don't think he'd be there, but that that house, I remember years later driving by and it had just like the tallest trees and hedge surrounding the perimeter of it.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Where was that?
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Where was that in '99?
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Well, it was cut down so people could see his beautiful art.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: His art.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: He kept saying it was art.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: Fucking crazy.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, so when do you when do you tell that story these days?
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Like, when does that story find its way into the world?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: I don't tell a lot of people.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Like, I figured it would be good for the podcast.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Um, I can't believe I've never told you this story.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Like, that's that's you really think I would have led with that four four years ago, you know?
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Jill and I talk about it still.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, you're still processing the trauma of it.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: So my question for you, Nick, is what is the weirdest piece of art you have ever had the privilege of seeing or experiencing?
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: So I possess a piece of art that my wife hates.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: And it does not hang in our home because she hates it so bad.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: But to me, it is meaningful, but it is an upsetting piece to look at.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, did you get your butt bronzed?
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: No, my butt is a work of art.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: You don't bronze art.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Um God gave me a work of art.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting on it right now.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Maybe they'll do a death mask of it when it's my time.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: When the when the Canadian animal head Grim Reaper finally comes for me.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: He knows where you live.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I told him.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: I'm putting you on a tree, my sweet thing.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Um just your butt cheeks, though.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Just your butt cheeks.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: So there's a guy I went to high school with, um, and I think he goes by Frank now, although that was not what he went by in high school.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: And you can look him up online.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: His his online presence is under Das Frank, D-A-S-F-R-A-N-K.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: And I didn't know him well in high school, and I remember him as being the kid I went to karate class with, but he has turned into an incredible and highly accomplished artist and tattoo artist.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: And he's in Vegas now, and he does uh, you know, I don't talk to him, but he's done a ton of really incredible work, and if you just look at it, it's really impressive.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: And so he did this piece of art like 10 or 15 years ago that just blew my fucking mind.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: And if it was around today, I have the money to buy it today, but it's long sold.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: I ended up buying a print of it, and it's called Pogo the Duke.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, and it is a mashup, a portrait mashup of John Wayne and John Wayne Gacy.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: John Wayne and John Wayne Gacy.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: It's John Wayne in John Wayne Gacy's clown makeup, is basically what it amounts to.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: You should just Google it right now while we're you should just Google Pogo the Duke.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: I'll do it now too.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Let's see here.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: Yep, it's the first thing that comes up when you click images.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, Pogo the Duke.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, that first of all, that's terri- Oh, I've seen this before.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Have you?
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Did I show it to you or something?
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Or maybe somebody just showed it to you because it's evocative.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: And you know, I think it's great because John Wayne is such a terrible, monstrous piece of shit and set masculinity back so many, so many decades, and it's just such a malevolent, awful force in this planet.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: And John Wayne Gacy was a guy who raped and tortured and killed boys.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: And so I think they have an overlap that's not just their names, but also their effects on the masculine population of America.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: And so to me, it's just like it's so right.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: And so I bought a copy of it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: My wife was like, that is the most upsetting thing that I've ever seen in my whole life.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: So it just lives in my collection.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Where does it hang?
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Where is it?
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: A stack of paintings in the back room.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Like, let me tell you, I'm looking did you?
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but let me tell you what I'm looking at.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at it right now, and what's the most disturbing about it is like he's smiling, but his eyes are so terrifying.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: They're so creepy in this.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like just the look, I mean his teeth also creepy, the wrinkles on his face, like everything about this is, but his eyes really are bothersome to me.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Those are John Wayne's eyes.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: But that is a brilliant piece of art though.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I love it.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: And I understand why my wife will never let me hang it in our home.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Well, that's not the kind of thing you want to see when you flash the light on at the bathroom at three in the morning when you're staggering in there for a pee.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: You're not wrong.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and yet I don't know.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Like, and again, yes, it's not a home piece of art, but for me, it's one of those things that I, you know, for me, it's what art, what I like art to do, which is like it really makes me think about something and it's got an interesting message that I can understand because admittedly I'm not like a refined art fan, but I just saw it and was like, fuck, this is great.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: I just have to have this thing.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, so that's my upsetting piece of art.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: It's no animal heads nailed to a tree.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Do you think this guy who did the animal head art would have made more of an impact if he had painted John Wayne Gacy's clown makeup on each of the each of the animal faces?
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: I think he'd have a better leg to stand on than it was art.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think part of what's insane is that there's no world in which that was art.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: That was a guy doing something crazy and then wanting people to have to deal with it.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: He was that was an act of aggression against the community because if it were really art he would have some way for people to see it that wasn't just alive.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Like there's a there's a way to invite people in and to show people stuff.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: And if you're just if you're just displaying cruelty to animals unannounced on your property and then having people freak out about it, you're not really making any kind of a statement.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: You're not really teaching anything.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: All you're doing is just doing something, you know, sort of insane and aggressive and upsetting and then and then and I see this I see this with kind of stupid people sometimes where they'll say like they don't understand the difference between freedom of speech and insulting somebody.
- 22:36unknown: Mm-hmm.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Where they're where it's like well it's my freedom of speech.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: It's my freedom of speech.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: And it's like yeah we have freedom of speech but you don't get to walk into you know an elementary school classroom and read from penthouse letters.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: Like that's not what we're trying to protect here with your freedom of speech.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: We're trying to protect your ability to dissent to have your own opinions to debate and to talk things out not to assault people.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: And so this strikes me as a guy who wanted to assault people and then said you know oh it's art it's art it's art.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: And then he came in to defend himself and obviously was not a winner.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: It was not a winner.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Like Pogo the Duke is truly upsetting art.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah I gotta take that off my screen right now and then stare it at me while we're but it's clear that it's art and even if you even if you're one of these nubnutses that loves John Wayne or one of the rarer nubnuts who loves John Wayne Gacy then even then I think I think its premise is not lost on you.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Gosh you know what would have been so cool is if he also did another print that was John Wayne Gacy dressed up as John Wayne but only but most of the makeup was wiped off but there were only little hints of like blue around the hair and the ears like wouldn't that that would have been so terrifying.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: You know what would be amazing would be if we used AI to create john wane gay doing john wane's monologue from the man who shot Liberty Valence in that like awful Chicago accent.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: Like he just he just wobbles in and he's like you know I don't remember the the monologue but like okay who who came in here and shot all these guys let's pull it together you guys like you know spurs rattling on the wood floor you hear the the cowboy boot so my roommate in first year Kate uh a dear friend of mine I don't know how this ever came to be but it's it's something that I hear in my head often and she had a great John Wayne impression.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And my favorite thing that she ever said was and that's what I call kicking your ass and she said it like that all the time.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: You better get into my house and start digging that hole pilgrim and that's what I call kicking your ass.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: There's an amazing uh recording of John Wayne uh giving a drunkenly giving a convention speech at a college and he's so wasted that he misidentifies himself.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: The first line in it is my name is William Wayne which is funny because his stage name was John Wayne and his real name was Marion Morrison and so who knows where the fuck William Wayne is but he's so shit housed that he does this thing.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: It's only a it's only a audio recording and he's just slurring all over the place and griping about how what a bunch of pansies the next generation is it's Pogo the Duke the best and worst piece of art.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Folks that's it for the reverse jackass podcast happy August 25th thank you for joining us um we love you we love having you here I'm Nick with me as always is Evelyn the Canadian Blade Evelyn wish the people a happy Tuesday.
