- 0:00Speaker 1: Then and now the Guardian Angel of talk radio is here.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Curtis leewa guest host the Mark Simon Show on seven
- 0:09Speaker 1: ten WOO and this I final weeks up stooding for
- 0:18Speaker 1: Mark Simon. Nobody better in the business. What a smooth operator.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Think of that song by Shada nineteen eighty four. Think
- 0:26Speaker 1: of that in nineteen eighty four. It's going to come
- 0:28Speaker 1: back when I talk about the two books being written
- 0:32Speaker 1: by Bernard about Bernard Gets that are being published at
- 0:36Speaker 1: the same time the beginning of this year, forty one
- 0:41Speaker 1: years since the Subway Gumman. So we're going to connect
- 0:44Speaker 1: all the dots. But thanks to Mark Simon for giving
- 0:48Speaker 1: me this opportunity, Tom Cuddy, the program director, who I've
- 0:51Speaker 1: known for years from his stage over at WPLJ, and
- 0:56Speaker 1: of course the iHeart group of station's largest in the
- 1:02Speaker 1: nation doesn't get any better than this. This is like
- 1:05Speaker 1: a second birthday present for me, because I got the
- 1:09Speaker 1: Christmas present which was substituting the first week. This will
- 1:12Speaker 1: be my Birthday present March twenty six aries fire. You know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I don't go over under, I go right through. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: who would have ever thought that I would have made
- 1:25Speaker 1: it to seventy two years old. So I got my
- 1:28Speaker 1: Christmas present substituting for Marquere and I'm getting my pre
- 1:33Speaker 1: birthday present. And then yesterday, because it's always busy in
- 1:37Speaker 1: my life, huge article came out. It had been done
- 1:40Speaker 1: weeks ago when it came out now and all of
- 1:44Speaker 1: a sudden, my phone was like blowing up from Hollywood.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, everybody out there on the West coast Hollywood
- 1:54Speaker 1: that I've known over the years, where I've met over
- 1:56Speaker 1: the years, was calling me about this article the Hollywood Reporter.
- 2:00Speaker 1: That's the bible for their business out there. So whether
- 2:03Speaker 1: it's movies, TV, whether it's streaming music, whatever it is,
- 2:10Speaker 1: that's their bible. And the article was Curtis Leewoo just
- 2:14Speaker 1: wants you to know, wants to know where are you from?
- 2:18Speaker 1: Because that's what I always asked, right is he? I
- 2:20Speaker 1: asked you where you're from? From? The Bronxes and No Jersey,
- 2:23Speaker 1: What high school do you go to? I always have
- 2:24Speaker 1: these series of questions because it tells me a lot
- 2:28Speaker 1: about who you are, where you're from, what your roots are.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And so it is a huge article and I got
- 2:35Speaker 1: this one call from a guy. Now, all of a sudden,
- 2:39Speaker 1: he's interested in Curtius Slawak, can I do this? Can
- 2:43Speaker 1: I do that? Can you know they're all they're all
- 2:45Speaker 1: schmoozing you. Uh, they're pulling your chain and chewing your shorts.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And he's like, hey, you remember me. Remember I grew
- 2:53Speaker 1: up in benson Hurst. Yeah, I remember you. Oh man,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I got I got ideas of what we can do.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I said, really, really, okay, Uh, could you share a
- 3:04Speaker 1: few with me? And he goes on and on things
- 3:06Speaker 1: he'd never be able to do in a month of Sundays.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But he's schnoring me. He snoring me, okay. And I
- 3:13Speaker 1: know this guy because in the midst of this mayoral
- 3:16Speaker 1: election he became a Cuomo sexual. He donated a lot
- 3:21Speaker 1: of money from Hollywood to Cuomo and he called me
- 3:26Speaker 1: a clown. He thinks I'm gonna forget that, right. So
- 3:30Speaker 1: he's going on and on. He's on the roll, doing
- 3:33Speaker 1: this typical routine they do out in Hollywood, And I said,
- 3:36Speaker 1: cause you hold a second, I gotta I gotta take
- 3:38Speaker 1: a call from mister click. And I hung up the
- 3:42Speaker 1: phone on him. Guy has no idea what it is,
- 3:47Speaker 1: so he must have assumed that there was a break.
- 3:50Speaker 1: He calls me right back, and I said, yeah, I
- 3:54Speaker 1: had a great conversation with mister Click. I'm sorry it
- 3:56Speaker 1: took me a little bit of time to get back
- 3:58Speaker 1: to your call, but I I want you to be
- 4:01Speaker 1: able to talk to mister Click now. And then hung
- 4:04Speaker 1: up on him. You think that's do not You think
- 4:08Speaker 1: he finally understood that you don't play with Curtis Lee right,
- 4:15Speaker 1: You don't stroke me and think I'm not gonna remember.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't forgive and I don't forget. Oh, by the way,
- 4:21Speaker 1: I hope Greg Kelly is listening over at WABC because
- 4:25Speaker 1: his show prep was always marked simone the best in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the business, and he's sort of been a dollar short
- 4:30Speaker 1: in a day late, not having a routine to be
- 4:33Speaker 1: able to pick pocket from. But that's okay. Why wouldn't
- 4:38Speaker 1: you listen to mark someone the best in the business.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I certainly have over the years. But let's talk about yesterday,
- 4:45Speaker 1: because it was a Hollywood day. My wife, Nancy, as
- 4:49Speaker 1: you know animal welfare activists, was quest for him by
- 4:54Speaker 1: the loss of Bridgiet Buddo. Now, obviously my wife is
- 4:57Speaker 1: a millennial. She didn't know Bridge Bardeaux from her liberated
- 5:02Speaker 1: sex bomb era of movies that she appeared in, especially
- 5:07Speaker 1: the ones that were made with Roger Vidim, who then
- 5:09Speaker 1: went on to marry years later Jane Fonda, Remember Barbarella. Yeah, okay,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but no, let's stick to Bridget Bardeus that one film
- 5:21Speaker 1: and God Created Woman. Right now, these are all in France,
- 5:25Speaker 1: so you gotta have subtitles to them, right God Created Woman.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It opens up with her sun bathing in the news.
- 5:33Speaker 1: This is nineteen fifty six. Think about that, nineteen fifty six,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and later she emerges from the sea in a clinging
- 5:42Speaker 1: wet dress. I'll never forget that scene, and at the
- 5:47Speaker 1: top of her career, with the paparazzi chasing her all over.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Remember this is the era Marilyn Monroe, so many other
- 5:56Speaker 1: sex bombs, but there was a certain sub a fair
- 6:01Speaker 1: about Bishard Bardell. So she's at the can Film Festival
- 6:07Speaker 1: right there off the Mediterranean. She's in demand and at
- 6:12Speaker 1: the top of her movie making career. She walks away
- 6:17Speaker 1: from it. She goes to Sanchope and she sets up
- 6:21Speaker 1: an animal welfare sanctuary. She goes out to the Arctic
- 6:28Speaker 1: and she confronts these barbarians who are clubbing baby seals
- 6:33Speaker 1: to death. Confronts them. Yeah, I'm sure some of them
- 6:37Speaker 1: are like Brigard Bardeaux my day. Who would ever think
- 6:42Speaker 1: you would see Bridget Bardeaux at the North Pole.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But she was a fighter for animal welfare, and she
- 6:50Speaker 2: consistently railed against laboratory experiments against animals which are being
- 6:58Speaker 2: filtered out in the Trump administration in the Pentagon.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Also and other federal agencies. Imagine it's still and you know,
- 7:08Speaker 1: testing on beagles like that that U discraciata Dr Fauci,
- 7:15Speaker 1: testing on beagles, sending them off to Tunisia, third world country,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and then putting cones around their heads and having sand
- 7:27Speaker 1: fleas eat the skin off their heads. For what purposes
- 7:32Speaker 1: we spent money on that? It was never explained, doctor Fauci.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You will burn in hell for that and many other things.
- 7:38Speaker 1: By the way, he's a boy from Bench and her
- 7:41Speaker 1: screw up pharmacy. Uh then went to Regis, the most
- 7:44Speaker 1: prestigious of Jesuit high schools, better than the one I
- 7:47Speaker 1: went to Brooklyn Prep. But he was a disgrace for
- 7:51Speaker 1: many many reasons. All right, let's stick with it with
- 7:54Speaker 1: Bridget Bartell. And then she says, I don't care about
- 8:00Speaker 1: my past glory. I am taking every franc, every euro
- 8:06Speaker 1: that I have, and I'm investing it in adopting unwanted
- 8:10Speaker 1: animal snowkill shelters Spain and neutering. Now, her politics was
- 8:17Speaker 1: extreme right. She was a follower of lapenn She hated Muslims.
- 8:22Speaker 1: She was cited for that many times for hate speech.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But yesterday, for those in the animal welfare community, it
- 8:29Speaker 1: was a reminder how so many who have done so
- 8:33Speaker 1: well in Hollywood in a movie making and in TV
- 8:37Speaker 1: production walked away or in their final years bequeathed all
- 8:43Speaker 1: their money to animal welfare. Now, the complete opposite of
- 8:47Speaker 1: Richard Bardot at that time was Dori Stay. She was
- 8:49Speaker 1: America's sweetheart. Remember Doris Stay. I remember seeing her in
- 8:53Speaker 1: Pillow Talk I think it was nineteen sixty with Rock Hudson.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Who know that Rock Hudson was gay, but he was.
- 9:00Speaker 1: These were great movies. But she was America's sweetheart. And
- 9:06Speaker 1: then while doing a film in about nineteen seventy one,
- 9:11Speaker 1: she saw some people abusing animals and immediately I think
- 9:19Speaker 1: she was doing the film The Man who Knew Too
- 9:21Speaker 1: Much nineteen seventy one, she established actors and others for animals.
- 9:27Speaker 1: No de fur, no defer, and who joined the Mary
- 9:31Speaker 1: Tyler Moore, Angie Dickenson, Jane Meadows, and of course Bob
- 9:34Speaker 1: Barker the price is right. If he saw you warring
- 9:38Speaker 1: wearing a fur, he would have punched your schnaz right
- 9:41Speaker 1: down your throat. And this became her passion. She lived
- 9:46Speaker 1: by Karmel by the Sea, you know Clint Eastwood where
- 9:49Speaker 1: he became mayor Karmel by the Sea, a lifelong Republican,
- 9:54Speaker 1: died at ninety seven, bequeathed all of her wealth to
- 9:59Speaker 1: her at almost sanctuary. And then, of course there was
- 10:02Speaker 1: Betty White. Betty White died at about a hundred. I
- 10:07Speaker 1: never forget seeing her on phil Donague in the afternoons
- 10:11Speaker 1: and she was talking about her animal welfare fund and
- 10:14Speaker 1: somebody was giving her a hard time. Yeah, look Betty White,
- 10:17Speaker 1: Golden Girls Hot in Cleveland, the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Betty White an institution, bequeathed all her money to her
- 10:27Speaker 1: animal wildlife fund. And then, oh yeah, for the guys
- 10:32Speaker 1: out there, there's Wakie Phoenix. Remember that great movie, the
- 10:39Speaker 1: first one, the Joker, not not the second one with
- 10:43Speaker 1: Oh god, that was not a good one. No, no, no, no, no,
- 10:48Speaker 1: the second movie could not touch the first one that
- 10:50Speaker 1: was classic. So here's Joaquin Phoenix. He's receiving the Academy award. Uh,
- 10:58Speaker 1: he's speaking gibberish up there, who knew where his mind was,
- 11:01Speaker 1: like so many of these actors and actresses. And the
- 11:05Speaker 1: very next day he's out rescuing as she was known
- 11:10Speaker 1: to do animals in factory farms. He would actually go there.
- 11:15Speaker 1: He would say to those in charge of the farmers,
- 11:17Speaker 1: how much you want for that mother cow? How much
- 11:20Speaker 1: you want for that new born calf? Spending his wealth
- 11:23Speaker 1: to do that great actor? So many others, and think
- 11:32Speaker 1: of it, people make fun of you. Would you make
- 11:37Speaker 1: fun of Doris Day? Would you make fun of Betty White? Well,
- 11:41Speaker 1: they do make fun of Joaquin Phoenix. They say he
- 11:44Speaker 1: is looney Kazuni from parts on own great actor, no
- 11:48Speaker 1: doubt about it. And Bridget Bardeux, who when they said
- 11:53Speaker 1: are you a recluse, she said, no, I'm not a recluse.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I would rather deal with animals than with people. And
- 12:00Speaker 1: then the most recent maybe we'll get to it in
- 12:03Speaker 1: this week when I'm substituting for Mark Simoon pigeons, which
- 12:12Speaker 1: in my mind street pigeons should be the official bird
- 12:17Speaker 1: of New York City, right, Oh man, you get such battles.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Some people say they're nothing more than rats with wings.
- 12:26Speaker 1: You know, they put up spikes on their windows cells. Hey,
- 12:29Speaker 1: you don't want pigeons coming on your window cells. Put
- 12:31Speaker 1: up plastic owls. That's like a natural nemesis to them.
- 12:36Speaker 1: It sort of like when you go to a cornfield
- 12:38Speaker 1: and they put up scarecrows and keeps the crows who
- 12:40Speaker 1: have very smart. Pigeons very smart, but they will not
- 12:43Speaker 1: land on a window cell or any area that has
- 12:46Speaker 1: a plastic owl in. And boy, tremendous controversy raging because
- 12:55Speaker 1: another great actress actually came to the support the pigeons,
- 13:05Speaker 1: the actress Sarah Paulson. She did a podcast in what
- 13:09Speaker 1: she was saying, we shouldn't be torturing the street pigeons.
- 13:15Speaker 1: They're a part of our New York City heritage and legacy,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and they are and they have performed so many services
- 13:22Speaker 1: for us over the decades, without which we might have
- 13:27Speaker 1: suffered enormously. And I grew up with pigeons on the
- 13:32Speaker 1: roof of my grandfather and grandmother's house in Kannarci. My
- 13:36Speaker 1: uncle Vincenz used to have a pigeon coop. There were
- 13:38Speaker 1: a lot of pigeon coops back then, so I nurtured them,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I fed them, I trained them Boston Bulldies and Homer's,
- 13:49Speaker 1: so I have a direct infinity for pigeons. But boy,
- 13:53Speaker 1: you talk about mixing ammonian bleach and my own wife.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I'm so proud of her, Nancy, who stood up to
- 14:00Speaker 1: a comrade build a blasio back then, the part time mayor,
- 14:03Speaker 1: the dope from Park Slope, when he said, if you
- 14:06Speaker 1: feed pigeons, we are gonna find you and my wife, Nancy,
- 14:14Speaker 1: in classic Clint Eastwood terminology, turned to build a blasio
- 14:21Speaker 1: on the steps of city Hall when he was mayor
- 14:24Speaker 1: unfortunately for eight years, and said make my day as
- 14:30Speaker 1: she and others began feeding the pigeons right there. Oh
- 14:34Speaker 1: you can see all that. Just go to act Curtis Sliwer.
- 14:37Speaker 1: It's all posted there. But what a day following the
- 14:42Speaker 1: Hollywood Reporter, I mean, dissing and dismissing somebody of great renown.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Gotta know you don't play with Curtis Sliwa, You don't
- 14:53Speaker 1: play with me. Coming up next, so we got to
- 14:57Speaker 1: talk about two books that are being published by about
- 15:02Speaker 1: Bernard Gatz forty one years later coming out at the
- 15:05Speaker 1: same time by the same publishing house, and I guarantee
- 15:09Speaker 1: you because of that, it'll probably be a movie made
- 15:13Speaker 1: about what occurred forty one years ago in December of
- 15:20Speaker 1: the subways of New York City that I spend most
- 15:22Speaker 1: of my time in. Our number is eight hundred three
- 15:25Speaker 1: two one zero seven ten. That's eight hundred three two
- 15:30Speaker 1: one zero seven ten, because this is the place for
- 15:35Speaker 1: you to be heard. Now if you if you weren't
- 15:38Speaker 1: part of the WR seven ten listenership, you need to now.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I Annancy are, and there are a growing number of
- 15:46Speaker 1: people out there. Just uh dial right in at eight
- 15:51Speaker 1: hundred three two one zero seven ten.
