- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirty enmity between man and Satan. I will put
- 0:05Speaker 1: enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed
- 0:08Speaker 1: and her seed. It shall bruise thy head, and thou
- 0:11Speaker 1: shalt bruise his heel. The divine sentence pronounced against Satan
- 0:17Speaker 1: after the fall of Man was also a prophecy, embracing
- 0:20Speaker 1: all the ages to the close of time and foreshadowing
- 0:23Speaker 1: the great conflict to engage all the races of men
- 0:26Speaker 1: who should live upon the earth, God declares, I will
- 0:31Speaker 1: put enmity. This enmity is not naturally entertained. When man
- 0:37Speaker 1: transgressed the divine law, his nature became evil, and he
- 0:41Speaker 1: was in harmony and not at variance with Satan. There
- 0:45Speaker 1: exists naturally no enmity between sinful man and the originator
- 0:49Speaker 1: of sin. Both became evil through apostasy. The apostate is
- 0:54Speaker 1: never at rest, except as he obtained sympathy and support
- 0:58Speaker 1: by inducing others to follow his exams. For this reason,
- 1:02Speaker 1: fallen angels and wicked men unite in desperate companionship. Had
- 1:08Speaker 1: not God specially interposed, Satan and man would have entered
- 1:12Speaker 1: into an alliance against Heaven, and instead of cherishing enmity,
- 1:15Speaker 1: against Satan, the whole human family would have been united
- 1:19Speaker 1: in opposition to God. Satan tempted man to sin, as
- 1:23Speaker 1: he had caused angels to rebel, that he might thus
- 1:26Speaker 1: secure co operation in his warfare against Heaven. There was
- 1:30Speaker 1: no dissension between himself and the fallen angels as regards
- 1:34Speaker 1: their hatred of Christ, while on all other points there
- 1:37Speaker 1: was discord. They were firmly united in opposing the authority
- 1:41Speaker 1: of the ruler of the universe. But when Satan heard
- 1:44Speaker 1: the declaration that enmity should exist between himself and the
- 1:47Speaker 1: woman and between his seed and her seed, he knew
- 1:51Speaker 1: that his efforts to deprave human nature would be interrupted,
- 1:54Speaker 1: that by some means, man was to be enabled to
- 1:57Speaker 1: resist his power. Wan's enmity against the human race is
- 2:01Speaker 1: kindled because through Christ, they are the objects of God's
- 2:05Speaker 1: love and mercy. He desires to thwart the divine plan
- 2:09Speaker 1: for man's redemption, to cast dishonor upon God. By defacing
- 2:13Speaker 1: and defiling his handiwork. He would cause grief in Heaven
- 2:16Speaker 1: and fill the earth with woe and desolation. And he
- 2:20Speaker 1: points to all this evil as the result of God's
- 2:23Speaker 1: work in creating man. It is the grace that Christ
- 2:27Speaker 1: implants in the soul, which creates in man enmity against Satan.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Without this converting grace and renewing power, man would continue
- 2:36Speaker 1: the captive of Satan, a servant ever ready to do
- 2:38Speaker 1: his bidding. But the new principle in the soul creates
- 2:42Speaker 1: conflict where hitherto had been peace. The power which Christ
- 2:46Speaker 1: imparts enables man to resist the tyrant and usurper. Whoever
- 2:51Speaker 1: is seen to abhorse in instead of loving it. Whoever
- 2:55Speaker 1: resists and conquers those passions that have held sway within,
- 2:58Speaker 1: displays the operation of principle wholly from above. The antagonism
- 3:04Speaker 1: that exists between the spirit of Christ and the spirit
- 3:06Speaker 1: of Satan was most strikingly displayed in the world's reception
- 3:10Speaker 1: of Jesus. It was not so much because he appeared
- 3:14Speaker 1: without worldly wealth, pomp, or grandeur that the Jews were
- 3:17Speaker 1: led to reject him. They saw that he possessed power
- 3:20Speaker 1: which would more than compensate for the lack of these
- 3:23Speaker 1: outward advantages. But the purity and holiness of Christ called
- 3:27Speaker 1: forth against him the hatred of the ungodly. His life
- 3:31Speaker 1: of self denial and sinless devotion was a perpetual reproof
- 3:35Speaker 1: to a proud, sensual people. It was this that evoked
- 3:39Speaker 1: enmity against the Son of God. Satan and evil angels
- 3:43Speaker 1: joined with evil men, all the energies of apostasy conspired
- 3:48Speaker 1: against the champion of Truth. The same enmity as manifested
- 3:52Speaker 1: toward Christ's followers as was manifested toward their master. Whoever
- 3:57Speaker 1: sees the repulsive character of sin, and who strength from
- 4:00Speaker 1: above resists temptation, will assuredly arouse the wrath of Satan
- 4:04Speaker 1: and his subjects. Hatred of the pure principles of truth
- 4:09Speaker 1: and reproach, and persecution of its advocates will exist as
- 4:12Speaker 1: long as sin and sinners remain. The followers of Christ
- 4:17Speaker 1: and the servants of Satan cannot harmonize. The offense of
- 4:21Speaker 1: the Cross has not ceased. All that will live godly
- 4:24Speaker 1: in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Satan's agents are constantly
- 4:30Speaker 1: working under his direction to establish his authority and build
- 4:33Speaker 1: up his kingdom in opposition to the government of God.
- 4:37Speaker 1: To this end, they seek to deceive Christ's followers and
- 4:41Speaker 1: allure them from their allegiance. Like their leader, they misconstrue
- 4:45Speaker 1: and pervert the scriptures to accomplish their object. As Satan
- 4:50Speaker 1: endeavored to cast reproach upon God, so do his agents
- 4:53Speaker 1: seek to malign God's people. The spirit which put Christ
- 4:57Speaker 1: to death moves so wicked to destroy his follower. All
- 5:01Speaker 1: this is foreshadowed in that first prophecy. I will put
- 5:04Speaker 1: enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed
- 5:08Speaker 1: and her seed, and this will continue to the close
- 5:11Speaker 1: of time. Satan summons all his forces and throws his
- 5:15Speaker 1: whole power into the combat. Why is it that he
- 5:19Speaker 1: meets with no greater resistance? Why are the soldiers of
- 5:22Speaker 1: Christ so sleepy and indifferent because they have so little
- 5:27Speaker 1: real connection with Christ, Because they are so destitute of
- 5:30Speaker 1: His spirit. Sin is not to them repulsive and abhorrent
- 5:34Speaker 1: as it was to their master. They do not meet
- 5:37Speaker 1: it as did Christ, with decisive and determined resistance. They
- 5:42Speaker 1: do not realize the exceeding evil and malignity of Sin,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and they are blinded both to the character and the
- 5:48Speaker 1: power of the Prince of darkness. There is little enmity
- 5:52Speaker 1: against Satan and his works because there is so great
- 5:54Speaker 1: ignorance concerning his power and malice, and the vast extent
- 5:58Speaker 1: of his warfare against Christ. And his church. Multitudes are
- 6:03Speaker 1: deluded here. They do not know that their enemy is
- 6:06Speaker 1: a mighty general who controls the minds of evil angels,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and that, with well matured plans and skillful movements, he
- 6:13Speaker 1: is warring against Christ to prevent the salvation of souls.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Among professed Christians, and even among ministers of the Gospel,
- 6:22Speaker 1: there is heard scarcely a reference to Satan, except perhaps
- 6:25Speaker 1: an incidental mention in the pulpit. They overlook the evidences
- 6:30Speaker 1: of his continual activity and success. They neglect the many
- 6:33Speaker 1: warnings of his subtlety. They seem to ignore his very existence.
- 6:39Speaker 1: While men are ignorant of his devices, this vigilant foe
- 6:42Speaker 1: is upon their track every moment. He is intruding, his
- 6:46Speaker 1: presence in every department of the household, in every street
- 6:49Speaker 1: of our cities, in the churches, in the national councils,
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the courts of justice, perplexing, deceiving, seducing everywhere, ruining
- 6:58Speaker 1: the souls and bodies of men, women and children, breaking
- 7:01Speaker 1: up families, sowing hatred, emulation, strife, sedition, murder. And the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Christian world seem to regard these things as though God
- 7:10Speaker 1: had appointed them and they must exist Satan is continually
- 7:14Speaker 1: seeking to overcome the people of God by breaking down
- 7:17Speaker 1: the barriers which separate them from the world. Ancient Israel
- 7:21Speaker 1: were enticed into sin when they ventured into forbidden association
- 7:25Speaker 1: with the Heathen. In a similar manner, are modern Israel
- 7:28Speaker 1: let astray. The God of this world hath blinded the
- 7:32Speaker 1: minds of them which believe not, lest the light of
- 7:35Speaker 1: the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God,
- 7:38Speaker 1: should shine unto them. All who are not decided followers
- 7:42Speaker 1: of Christ are servants of Satan. In the unregenerate heart,
- 7:46Speaker 1: there is love of sin and a disposition to cherish
- 7:49Speaker 1: and excuse it. In the renewed heart, there is hatred
- 7:52Speaker 1: of sin and determined resistance against it. When Christians choose
- 7:57Speaker 1: the society of the ungodly and unbelieving, they expose themselves
- 8:01Speaker 1: to temptation. Satan conceals himself from view and stealthily draws
- 8:07Speaker 1: his deceptive covering over their eyes. They cannot see that
- 8:11Speaker 1: such company is calculated to do them harm, and while
- 8:14Speaker 1: all the time assimilating to the world in character, words,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and actions, they are becoming more and more blinded conformity
- 8:22Speaker 1: to worldly customs. Converts the Church to the world, It
- 8:25Speaker 1: never converts the world to Christ. Familiarity with sin will
- 8:30Speaker 1: inevitably cause it to appear less repulsive. He who chooses
- 8:34Speaker 1: to associate with the servants of Satan will soon cease
- 8:37Speaker 1: to fear their master. When in the way of duty
- 8:41Speaker 1: we are brought into trial, as was Daniel in the
- 8:43Speaker 1: King's court. We may be sure that God will protect us,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but if we place ourselves under temptation, we shall fall
- 8:50Speaker 1: sooner or later. The tempter often works most successfully through
- 8:55Speaker 1: those who are least suspected of being under his control.
- 8:59Speaker 1: The possessors of ten talent and education are admired and honored,
- 9:02Speaker 1: as if these qualities could atone for the absence of
- 9:05Speaker 1: the fear of God or entitlement to his favor. Talent
- 9:09Speaker 1: and culture considered in themselves are gifts of God. But
- 9:13Speaker 1: when these are made to supply the place of piety,
- 9:16Speaker 1: when instead of bringing the soul nearer to God, they
- 9:18Speaker 1: lead away from Him, then they become a curse and
- 9:21Speaker 1: a snare. The opinion prevails with many that all which
- 9:25Speaker 1: appears like courtesy or refinement must in some sense pertain
- 9:29Speaker 1: to Christ. Never was there a greater mistake these qualities
- 9:34Speaker 1: should grace the character of every Christian, for they would
- 9:37Speaker 1: exert a powerful influence in favor of true religion. But
- 9:40Speaker 1: they must be consecrated to God, or they also are
- 9:43Speaker 1: a power for evil. Many a man of cultured intellect
- 9:47Speaker 1: and pleasant manners, who would not stoop to what is
- 9:50Speaker 1: commonly regarded as an immoral act, is but a polished
- 9:53Speaker 1: instrument in the hands of Satan. The insidious, deceptive character
- 9:58Speaker 1: of his influence and example renders him a more dangerous
- 10:01Speaker 1: enemy to the cause of Christ than are those who
- 10:04Speaker 1: are ignorant and uncultured. By earnest prayer and dependence upon God,
- 10:09Speaker 1: Solomon obtained the wisdom which excited the wonder and admiration
- 10:12Speaker 1: of the world. But when he turned from the source
- 10:16Speaker 1: of his strength and went forward relying upon himself, he
- 10:19Speaker 1: fell a prey to temptation. Then the marvelous powers bestowed
- 10:23Speaker 1: on this wisest of kings only rendered him a more
- 10:26Speaker 1: effective agent of the adversary of souls. While Satan is
- 10:31Speaker 1: constantly seeking to blind their minds to the fact, let
- 10:34Speaker 1: Christians never forget that they wrestle not against flesh and blood,
- 10:38Speaker 1: but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
- 10:42Speaker 1: darkness of this world against wicked spirits in high places.
- 10:47Speaker 1: The inspired warning is sounding down the centuries to our time.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary, the Devil, as
- 10:55Speaker 1: a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour
- 11:00Speaker 1: on the whole armor of God, that ye may be
- 11:02Speaker 1: able to stand against the wiles of the devil. From
- 11:05Speaker 1: the days of Adam to our own time, our great
- 11:08Speaker 1: enemy has been exercising his power to oppress and destroy.
- 11:12Speaker 1: He is now preparing for his last campaign against the Church.
- 11:17Speaker 1: All who seek to follow Jesus will be brought into
- 11:19Speaker 1: conflict with this relentless foe. The more nearly the Christian
- 11:23Speaker 1: imitates the divine pattern, the more surely will he make
- 11:26Speaker 1: himself a mark for the attacks of Satan. All who
- 11:30Speaker 1: are actively engaged in the cause of God, seeking to
- 11:33Speaker 1: unveil the deceptions of the evil One and to present
- 11:36Speaker 1: Christ before the people, will be able to join in
- 11:39Speaker 1: the testimony of Paul, in which he speaks of serving
- 11:42Speaker 1: the Lord with all humility of mind. With many tears
- 11:45Speaker 1: and temptations, Satan assailed Christ with his fiercest and most
- 11:50Speaker 1: subtle temptations, but he was repulsed in every conflict. Those
- 11:55Speaker 1: battles were fought in our behalf. Those victories make it
- 11:58Speaker 1: possible for us to conquer. Christ will give strength to
- 12:02Speaker 1: all who seek it. No man without his own consent
- 12:06Speaker 1: can be overcome by Satan. The tempter has no power
- 12:10Speaker 1: to control the will or to force the soul to sin.
- 12:14Speaker 1: He may distress, but he cannot contaminate. He can cause agony,
- 12:19Speaker 1: but not defilement. The fact that Christ has conquered should
- 12:23Speaker 1: inspire his followers with courage to fight manfully the battle
- 12:27Speaker 1: against sin and Satan. End of Chapter thirty
