- 0:00If a person can be happy without the gospel, then what's the use?
- 0:04A woman's siblings and all her children left the church.
- 0:10They say they are happier now. She watches them and they seem
- 0:14to be happy. She is not so happy and yet
- 0:18she's trying to keep the commandments, unlike her friends
- 0:21and family. What would you say?
- 0:24It should not be surprising that when people shed the high
- 0:28expectations of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, they
- 0:32feel free and yes, even even a temporary sense of happiness on
- 0:37an easier path. Happiness is not the exclusive
- 0:41domain of active, contributing members of the church.
- 0:45Joy, however, is another matter. The Prophet Joseph Smith said
- 1:04happiness is the object and design of our existence and
- 1:10we'll be the end thereof if we pursue the path that leads to
- 1:13it, and this path is virtue, uprightness, faithfulness,
- 1:18holiness, and keeping all the commandments of God.
- 1:23Hello, my name is Larry Corbridge and welcome back.
- 1:27This is episode 11 of the Stand Forever series.
- 1:32In the last episode, we considered purpose, direction,
- 1:36and destination and concluded that the destination you were
- 1:41born to reach is to choose to receive the gift of God's Son,
- 1:46the gift of God's Spirit, and the gift of God's life, and help
- 1:50others do the same. But what about happiness and
- 1:55joy? Aren't, aren't they the ultimate
- 1:58objective? Some scriptural and prophetic
- 2:03statements certainly suggest happiness and joy are an
- 2:08important part of the destination, if not the whole of
- 2:11it. Consequently, they must be
- 2:13considered in any discussion about the destination you were
- 2:17born to reach. Of course, the Clarion
- 2:22scriptural statement is from Lehigh saying Adam failed, that
- 2:28men might be and men are, that they might have joy.
- 2:34Happiness and joy, however, are, at least it seems to me,
- 2:38difficult subjects to address for several reasons.
- 2:42First, happiness and joy are complicated and nuanced.
- 2:48If you ask 100 people about happiness and joy, you'll get
- 2:51100 different opinions and answers.
- 2:54Second, most people, and maybe everyone, experience dark times.
- 3:02Some are clinically depressed for a myriad of reasons,
- 3:06including genetics and chemical imbalances.
- 3:09The last thing they need is to feel guilty about not being
- 3:13happier. Third, you don't achieve
- 3:16happiness or joy by aiming at them.
- 3:21At least that's the way it seems to me.
- 3:23And 4th, the library of books has been written on point in
- 3:27recent decades, and this entire series could be dedicated to
- 3:33that end. But let's consider what the Lord
- 3:37has said about both happiness and joy.
- 3:41I think I've read and and categorized every scripture,
- 3:46everything that the Lord has said regarding happiness and
- 3:50joy. If you consider only what the
- 3:52Lord has revealed about happiness.
- 3:55If you gather every scripture that speaks to happiness and
- 3:59distill the essence of each, this is what you will find.
- 4:03This is the summary. Happiness is known by those who
- 4:08trust in the Lord, acquire understanding, keep God's
- 4:12commandments, face adversity, serve others, help the poor and
- 4:17needy, desire good, and never give up or give in.
- 4:24If you if you think a bit about that scriptural summary, you
- 4:28will see happiness is not exclusive to active,
- 4:32contributing members of the church.
- 4:36There is nothing in that description that says that says
- 4:40that. Joy, however, is different,
- 4:44particularly what President Russell M Nelson referred to as
- 4:49enduring joy. Joy is more than a sense of
- 4:54well-being. It is more than contentment.
- 4:58It is not just a feeling, nor is it a constant state of euphoria.
- 5:03Even God weeps. Joy is more refined, more
- 5:08elevating, transforming and all consuming than happiness.
- 5:12Joy is the fruit of the power and glory of God.
- 5:18If you consider only what the Lord has revealed about joy, if
- 5:22you gather every scripture that speaks to joy and distill the
- 5:27essence of each, this is what you will find.
- 5:32Joy is given to those who worthily enter the presence of
- 5:37God, gain knowledge, have faith in Christ and are redeemed of
- 5:43their sins. Keep the commandments, suffer
- 5:47tribulation and no misery. Trust in the Lord, are endowed
- 5:53with the Spirit of the Holy Ghost, receive the ordinances of
- 5:59the temple. Our faithful and wise stewards,
- 6:02using their talents, give everything.
- 6:06Those who ask God, serve with the Lord to build His Kingdom
- 6:12with all their might, are fruitful in their laborers, and
- 6:16unconditionally and totally surrender to the Lord's will.
- 6:21Now compare the two. If if you compare what the Lord
- 6:25has said about happiness with what He has revealed about joy,
- 6:30you see that while all the principles of happiness are also
- 6:34essential to joy, several additional principles are
- 6:38necessary for joy. Joy includes all that happiness
- 6:44requires and more. What principles are necessary
- 6:49for joy that are not related to happiness?
- 6:52Here they are Faith in Christ and redemption of sin.
- 6:58The Spirit of the Holy Ghost. The presence of God.
- 7:02Ordinances of the temple. To be faithful and wise
- 7:07servants. A willingness to give
- 7:09everything. Those who ask God who suffer
- 7:14tribulation and misery, serve with the Lord to build His
- 7:19Kingdom with one's might and unconditional and total
- 7:24surrender to the Lord. One of the most significant
- 7:28scriptural statements about joy was made by Paul who said But
- 7:33the fruit of the Spirit is Lovejoy and peace.
- 7:40Ask any group of people what the best of all human conditions is
- 7:45and those 3 will surface Lovejoy and peace.
- 7:50They are all gifts of the Spirit which is the best of all human
- 7:54conditions and the source of almost all good things.
- 7:59Joy is a fruit of the Spirit of God, Mormon said.
- 8:05The spirit of the Lord fell upon those who heard the teaching of
- 8:09King Benjamin, and they were filled with joy.
- 8:14These are his words. And it came to pass that after
- 8:18they had spoken these words, the Spirit of the Lord came upon
- 8:22them, and they were filled with joy.
- 8:26On the same occasion, King Benjamin told the people they
- 8:30were filled with great joy because of the outpouring of the
- 8:33Spirit of God saying. And behold, even at this time ye
- 8:38have been calling on his name, and begging for a remission of
- 8:42your sins. And has he suffered that ye have
- 8:46begged in vain? Nay, he has poured out his
- 8:50Spirit upon you, and has caused that your hearts should be
- 8:55filled with joy, and has caused that your mouths should be
- 8:59stopped, that you could not find utterance so exceedingly great
- 9:04was your joy. David is recorded to have said,
- 9:09I have set the Lord always before me, that will show me the
- 9:14path of life. In thy presence is a fullness of
- 9:19joy in this life. The presence of the Lord is His
- 9:26Spirit, which is the fountain from which joy flows.
- 9:32The most important truth to understand about joy again is
- 9:37that it is a fruit of the Spirit of God.
- 9:42A woman's siblings and all her children left the church.
- 9:49They say they are happier now. She watches them and they seem
- 9:54to be happy. She is not so happy and yet
- 9:58she's trying to keep the commandments, unlike her friends
- 10:01and family. She asks if a person can be
- 10:06happy without the gospel, then what's the use?
- 10:11How would how would you answer that question?
- 10:14What would you say? An unmarried son says to his
- 10:20father he has many single friends who are happy and other
- 10:23married friends who are not. He mentions Lehigh's statement
- 10:28men are that they might have joy and asks a similar question.
- 10:34Why then is marriage so important?
- 10:37How would you answer that one? How would you answer either one?
- 10:421st The question is not a new one.
- 10:45We find the same thinking among all of Israel in Malachi chapter
- 10:513. When the Lord declares, Your
- 10:54words have been stout against me, sayeth the Lord.
- 10:59Yet ye say, meaning us, we say, What have we spoken so much
- 11:05against thee? The Lord replies.
- 11:08Ye have said it is vain to serve God.
- 11:11And what prophet is it that we have kept his ordinance, and
- 11:15that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts, and
- 11:19now we call the proud happy? Yeah, they that work wickedness
- 11:24are set up, and yeah, they that tempt God are even delivered.
- 11:30Then they that feared the Lord spake one to another, And the
- 11:34Lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was
- 11:38written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that
- 11:42thought upon his name. And the Lord says this.
- 11:47And they shall be mine in that day when I make up my jewel, and
- 11:54I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth
- 11:58him. Then shall ye return and discern
- 12:02between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth
- 12:06God and him that serveth him not.
- 12:11We don't have to look far to find examples of people who
- 12:14appear to be proud, but happy, unrighteous, and yet, in the
- 12:19words of Malachi, set up doing better than you.
- 12:24And you may ask, what's the use? This is the eat and drink and be
- 12:32merry crowd, which Nephi said would predominate in our day.
- 12:38He said this, Yeah. And there shall be many which
- 12:41shall say eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die, and
- 12:45it shall be well with us. Who can deny their merriment?
- 12:52Otherwise, there would be no attraction, no point.
- 12:56It should not be surprising that when people shed the high
- 13:00expectations of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ or avoid
- 13:05the challenges and stresses of married and family life, they
- 13:09feel free and yes, even even a temporary sense of happiness on
- 13:14an easier path. A student who drops out of a
- 13:19rigorous educational program to sell cappuccino at Starbucks may
- 13:25feel happier for a time, but the long term consequences are a
- 13:30much different story. Do you want the happiness of the
- 13:35world or do you want to become a polished jewel?
- 13:42Anyone who has not fallen down dead drunk knows you can't
- 13:48become a polished jewel on the path of the free and easy.
- 13:54You know deep within your soul that fire, suffering, and yes
- 14:00even misery are necessary to mold and temper A godly soul and
- 14:05experience joy. You know joy cannot be 1 without
- 14:11opposition and misery and misery to prove you will be faithful in
- 14:15all things no matter what. You know those things from long
- 14:22before no one need teach you that they are written in your
- 14:27heart. When Christ revealed to his
- 14:31disciples they would be shunned and ultimately killed, they were
- 14:35understandably sad. He said, But because I have said
- 14:41these things unto you, sorrow have filled your heart.
- 14:45He then promised that the Comforter would come, and said,
- 14:50Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament,
- 14:55but the world shall rejoice, and ye shall be sorrowful, but your
- 15:00sorrow shall be turned into joy, and ye now therefore have
- 15:07sorrow. But I will see you again, and
- 15:10your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
- 15:18That may be what President Russell M Nelson referred to as
- 15:22enduring joy. Happiness is not the exclusive
- 15:28domain of active, contributing members of the Church.
- 15:32Joy, however, is another matter. President Russell M Nelson Todd,
- 15:39If we look to the world. And follow its formulas for
- 15:42happiness. We will never know joy.
- 15:46The unrighteous may experience any number of emotions and
- 15:50sensations, but they will never experience joy.
- 15:55Joy is a gift for the faithful. It is the gift that comes from
- 16:00intentionally trying to live a righteous life as taught by
- 16:04Jesus Christ. Happiness and joy are not
- 16:09dependent on any external condition or or circumstance.
- 16:15As important as what the Lord has revealed about both
- 16:19happiness and joy. As important as that is, as what
- 16:23the Lord has not said and what is not mentioned by God in
- 16:27either instance. Popularity, recognition, money,
- 16:33security, beauty, health, no problems, ease or avoiding
- 16:39stress, positive attitude, having control and extroversion,
- 16:44to name just a few. Circumstances may make you sad,
- 16:50but they will not make you happy.
- 16:53You may feel blue because it is raining, but that does not mean
- 16:57you'll be happy when the sun shines.
- 16:59You may be saddened by the death of a loved one, or contraction
- 17:04of an illness, or the loss of a limb, the destruction of your
- 17:08home by an earthquake or fire, or when you lose your job.
- 17:11But that does not mean you're necessarily happy when the sun
- 17:15does shine and all of your loved ones are alive and you do not
- 17:19have cancer and you have all your limbs and your house is
- 17:23still standing. Now you you may not agree with
- 17:27that. You may think you are happier
- 17:31when the sun shines with loved ones.
- 17:34When you are well, your house is still standing and you have a
- 17:37good job. If those things make you happy,
- 17:40may I suggest it's not because of those things, rather because
- 17:45you are aware and grateful for them.
- 17:49Gratitude, one of God's commandments, is what leads to
- 17:54happiness, not the circumstances.
- 17:58Happiness and joy also do not require perfection or near
- 18:02perfection. They are within the reach of
- 18:05everyone. They depend on us alone.
- 18:09We are responsible, we are given this life to learn to live
- 18:14happily. Now it is a test, but someday
- 18:18the test will end. But if we are successful, we
- 18:23will continue to live in the same way, not as a test, but as
- 18:26a way of life. So what about it?
- 18:32Is joy the destination, or at least part of it?
- 18:38The answer is yes and no. Joy is one of the consequences,
- 18:46and maybe the greatest consequence of receiving the
- 18:49gifts of God's Son and His Spirit, that we may receive the
- 18:54greatest gift of His life, including a fullness of joy.
- 18:59It isn't, however, in my judgment at least, attained by
- 19:05aiming at it. Happiness and joy seem to be
- 19:11elusive. The harder you chase them.
- 19:14The more you focus on them, the more elusive they become.
- 19:20This is counterintuitive because we generally think the clearer
- 19:24the objective, the greater the focus, and the harder you work,
- 19:28the more likely you will succeed.
- 19:32I'm not sure, however, that holds true for happiness and
- 19:35joy. My experience is you stumble on
- 19:40them while you are focusing on other good things.
- 19:44Yes, men are that they might have joy, but I'm not at all
- 19:49convinced that joy is achieved by chasing it.
- 19:52Some of the most unhappy people are the most focused on their
- 19:56own happiness. It is not only.
- 20:00That they look for it in all the wrong places.
- 20:02But preoccupation with one's own happiness is fundamentally
- 20:08egocentric and will never lead to happiness.
- 20:12Oddly, you hit it by not aiming at it.
- 20:16The less stressed and focused you are about your own
- 20:19happiness, the happier you will be.
- 20:22This is like the Lord's statement when He said Whosoever
- 20:26will save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his
- 20:32life for my sake and the Gospels, he shall save it.
- 20:38As important as they are, happiness and joy should not be
- 20:45the North Star. At least again, in my judgment,
- 20:49Christ should be He is the North Star.
- 20:54He did not say what man or a man, IE to be Verily I say unto
- 21:01you, a happy people. Rather he said, even as I am.
- 21:09He did not say, Thou shalt have no other gods before happiness
- 21:13and joy. Rather he said, No other gods
- 21:17before me. Again, President Nelson,
- 21:21speaking to the same subject, said, My dear brothers and
- 21:26sisters, the joy we feel. Has little to do with the
- 21:30circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus
- 21:37of our lives. When the focus of our lives is
- 21:41on God's plan of salvation that President Monson's just taught
- 21:47us and Jesus Gospel, we can feel joy regardless of what is
- 21:53happening or not happening in our lives.
- 21:57Joy comes from and because of Him.
- 22:01He is the source of all joy. As is probably the case with
- 22:07most, maybe all people, there have been dark times in my life
- 22:11which have taught me much, including taught me much about
- 22:16joy in misery. Two periods were especially dark
- 22:22and unhappy, despite my efforts to live righteously.
- 22:28During those times, I learned and wrote much.
- 22:33Very dark times which can't, which I cannot include here.
- 22:37But this journal entry provides a glimmer of of light in the
- 22:42dark. Again, these are my words for my
- 22:46journal. I have felt oppressed in words I
- 22:49cannot begin to express. I have been in the depths of
- 22:54despair. There have been times at work
- 22:57when I have felt close to a meltdown.
- 23:01I have had to get up, walk away from the desk, walk outside into
- 23:05the parking lot and in the sunlight and pace back and
- 23:09forth, praying. Of course, all the while I have
- 23:13and I am experiencing the whole range of human emotions,
- 23:17particularly on the dark side of the scale, deep sadness, fear
- 23:22and foreboding. I feel weak and ineffective.
- 23:26My confidence is shaken to the core.
- 23:30Another journal entry during the same times reveals what I
- 23:34learned about joy and misery. I recorded this about two weeks
- 23:41ago. I went to sleep troubled about
- 23:43one thing or another. I had a dream.
- 23:47Oddly enough, it was not. It was not a vision.
- 23:51There were no images, only music.
- 23:55In my dream I heard a song. I heard a group singing a simple
- 24:00melody and simple lyrics. It was not the large glorious
- 24:05heavenly choir, rather more of a small folk group.
- 24:09I think that the big choirs were probably already booked for
- 24:12someone more important that night, and this little group of
- 24:16folk singers were all that were available to be sent to me.
- 24:20In any event, I am glad they came.
- 24:24I awoke with the song in my heart.
- 24:26I have since forgotten the melody, but I remember the
- 24:29simple yet profound refrain. There are good times and there
- 24:35are bad times, but the good times and the bad times are all
- 24:41good. The Lord revealed to the Prophet
- 24:46Joseph Smith, Thine adversity and thine affliction shall be
- 24:51but a small moment. If thou endure it well, God
- 24:56shall exalt thee on high. Thou shalt triumph over thy
- 25:01foes, and all these things shall give thee experience and shall
- 25:06be for thy good. Therefore hold on thy way.
- 25:13I love those words. Hold on.
- 25:17Thy way it is. It is more than hold on.
- 25:23It presupposes you are in the way, on the path.
- 25:27And if so, hold on thy way. Everything, every good thing,
- 25:35every bad thing, will be for thy good.
- 25:41What a precious truth. This is a true principle.
- 25:48It is profoundly important. Few principles provide a greater
- 25:54sense of security. Whatever happens, whatever life
- 25:58may bring, it will all work to your good if you endure it well.
- 26:06How marvelous to understand that.
- 26:08What a sense of security, control and autonomy comes when
- 26:12you realize that in a world of such great uncertainty and
- 26:17threat, absolute certainty and protection is always within your
- 26:22reach. You have little control over
- 26:26what happens, but absolute control over how it will affect
- 26:30you. You are holy and absolutely
- 26:33within control of your destiny. There are good times and there
- 26:39are bad times, but the good times and the bad times are all
- 26:45good. In the next episode, episode 12,
- 26:51we will continue our exploration of Jesus Christ as the way.
- 26:57Considering a series of questions including these.
- 27:02If you were to sum up life in 2 words for your posterity, what
- 27:07would you say? Next question, what is the
- 27:12hallmark, the defining characteristic of intelligence?
- 27:18Next question, what is the supreme expression of
- 27:23intelligence? I hope you will join me then.
