- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Tuesday.
- 0:16It's the 5th of August, I hope you're going well on this wintry
- 0:20old week in the southern hemisphere.
- 0:22I am spending this week and next week in Canberra doing my final
- 0:27chaplaincy training for the Army.
- 0:29Oh that's right, at the end of next week I will have shed my
- 0:33neuter service chaplain, what do you call it?
- 0:35Name tag status. And I will be just a regular old
- 0:39support chaplain. So learning all about mental
- 0:42health, first aid, all about moral injury and how chaplains
- 0:45can help. So big week Fortnite for me, but
- 0:48looking forward to getting all of this good stuff under my
- 0:51belt. And I hope your week is a good
- 0:54one, whatever it brings you, whatever the business or relaxed
- 0:58or just in the middle in the groove type of week.
- 1:02It is so good that you can press pause on your life and press
- 1:06play on our podcast to hear God's word as today.
- 1:10Today you're going to hear a section of Scripture that might
- 1:13well be familiar to you. It's the section where the good
- 1:17and the bad have now been laid out.
- 1:18And Moses, well, God through Moses urges his people to choose
- 1:23life and not death. So here is this beautiful
- 1:27encouragement for the people of God as we read together
- 1:30Deuteronomy chapter 30. In the future, when you
- 1:44experience all these blessings and curses I've listed for you,
- 1:47and when you are living amongst the nations to which the Lord
- 1:50your God has exiled you, take to heart all these instructions.
- 1:56If at that time you and your children return to the Lord your
- 1:59God, and if you obey with all your heart and all your soul,
- 2:03all the commands I've given you today, then the Lord your God
- 2:06will restore your fortunes. He will have mercy on you and
- 2:10gather you back from all the nations where He has scattered
- 2:14you. Even though you are banished to
- 2:16the ends of the earth, the Lord your God will gather you from
- 2:19there and bring you back again. The Lord your God will return
- 2:24you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will
- 2:27possess that land again. Then He will make you even more
- 2:31prosperous and numerous than your ancestors.
- 2:34The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all
- 2:38your descendants so that you will love Him with all your
- 2:41heart and soul, and so you may live.
- 2:45The Lord your God will inflict all these curses on your enemies
- 2:49and on those who hate and persecute you.
- 2:51Then you will again obey the Lord and keep all His commands
- 2:55that I'm giving you today. The Lord your God will then make
- 2:59you successful in everything you do.
- 3:02He will give you many children, a numerous livestock, and He
- 3:05will cause your fields to produce abundant harvests.
- 3:09For the Lord will again delight in being good to you as He was
- 3:13to your ancestors. The Lord your God will delight
- 3:17in you if you obey His voice and keep the commands and decrees
- 3:21written in this book of instruction, and if you turn to
- 3:24the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.
- 3:29This command I'm giving you today is not too difficult for
- 3:32you, and it is not beyond your reach.
- 3:35It is not kept in heaven so distance that you must ask who
- 3:39will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and
- 3:43obey. It is not kept beyond the sea,
- 3:46so far away that you must ask who will cross the sea to bring
- 3:51it to us so we can hear it and obey.
- 3:53No, the message is very close at hand.
- 3:57It is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.
- 4:02Now listen, today I'm giving you a choice between life and death,
- 4:09between prosperity and disaster, for I command you this day to
- 4:14love the Lord your God and to keep His commands, decrees, and
- 4:19regulations by walking in His ways.
- 4:22If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your
- 4:27God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and
- 4:30occupy. But if your hearts turn away and
- 4:34you refuse to listen, and if you were drawn away to serve and
- 4:38worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly
- 4:42be destroyed. You will not live a long good
- 4:45life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
- 4:49Today I've given you the choice between life and death, between
- 4:53blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth
- 4:57to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life
- 5:03so that you and your descendants might live.
- 5:06You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God,
- 5:09obeying Him, and committing yourselves firmly to Him.
- 5:13This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the
- 5:18Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your
- 5:22ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 5:37Ah, Jesus, we choose life, we choose you because you are the
- 5:43author of life. You are life itself, the giver
- 5:46of life and the world. Boy, it is very fixed on
- 5:51convincing us that we can find life to its fullest from a range
- 5:54of other sources. But Lord, we know that they are
- 5:58fake news. They are lies sent to deceive us
- 6:03that our human nature gets tempted by.
- 6:05But you and you alone hold the keys to life, and we choose you.
- 6:13And in this text it's so clear that the way you, we choose you
- 6:16is to believe in you and to follow you.
- 6:20And so that's what we do, Lord, we claim and decree that we
- 6:24believe in you, Jesus, that you are our Saviour, that you are
- 6:27the Son of God, and we commit to the ongoing work of
- 6:32transformation through your spirit so that we can live every
- 6:35day for you in your Kingdom, our wonderful, loving Saviour.
- 6:40And we pray all of this in your name, Amen.
