- 0:00Speaker 1: With Australia's T twenty World Cup campaign crumbling in a heap,
- 0:03Speaker 1: attention turns back to red ball cricket with some very
- 0:06Speaker 1: important shield rounds for the near future of Australian crickets.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm justin Edwards, welcome to domesticated and Fox Cricket. Right out,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Nick Savage is alongside me and Nick. It feels like
- 0:16Speaker 1: after a big series win, like an Ashes where it
- 0:19Speaker 1: ends four to one, you'd think you'd have all, you'd
- 0:21Speaker 1: have a set team, but we seem to be so
- 0:23Speaker 1: far from that at the moment.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That top six is actually looking pretty barren at the moment.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Jake Weatherall didn't have the Ashes we would have liked
- 0:30Speaker 2: him to have. Usbon Qui is obviously stepped away, Travis
- 0:33Speaker 2: Head has a year roll, a lot of question marks
- 0:35Speaker 2: about Cavion Green and all three formats at the moment,
- 0:38Speaker 2: So that top six, there's probably three spots up for
- 0:40Speaker 2: grabs realistically ahead of August. So these shield rounds over
- 0:43Speaker 2: the next two to three weeks seem to that final
- 0:45Speaker 2: are going to be massive.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got Australia play two tests in Bangladesh, which
- 0:49Speaker 1: dates not officially announced. We think they're going to be
- 0:51Speaker 1: August in Darwin and Mackay and then in October tour
- 0:54Speaker 1: of South Africa. So that's what's coming up. And the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Shield matches that have been played at the moment this
- 0:59Speaker 1: back end of the season. Last bits of first class
- 1:01Speaker 1: cricket we'll see before those happen. You mentioned the top seven.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I would say I would go as far as to
- 1:06Speaker 1: say is of the top seven that played in Sydney,
- 1:09Speaker 1: only three of them are locked in. Travis will open,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Smith will be four, and Alex Carey will be six
- 1:15Speaker 1: or seven. Even that we don't even know where he's
- 1:17Speaker 1: going to be batting.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But the rest we'll go through them all individually.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We'll start with Jake Weatherwood's ninety five this week, which
- 1:24Speaker 1: is his first score of significance since he got that
- 1:26Speaker 1: seventy in the second Ashes Test. Do you think he's
- 1:30Speaker 1: done enough to keep his place?
- 1:32Speaker 2: I feel like, as with a lot of people, we'd
- 1:35Speaker 2: like to see a little bit more from him, a
- 1:37Speaker 2: great seas back in the runs. The big problem with
- 1:39Speaker 2: him during that Ashes series was of course, full deliveries
- 1:42Speaker 2: at the pads.
- 1:43Speaker 4: He seems to be falling over himself.
- 1:44Speaker 2: He was out LBW think on three or four different
- 1:47Speaker 2: occasions averaging in the low twenties. If he can sort
- 1:50Speaker 2: that out and convert these starts his eighties nineties into
- 1:53Speaker 2: big hundreds, it's going to do himself wonders heading into
- 1:56Speaker 2: that Orchist series against Bangladesh. But realistically, I just a
- 2:00Speaker 2: feeling that the Aussiest sex are going to side with
- 2:02Speaker 2: Matt Renshaw a lot more like Obviously he's over the
- 2:04Speaker 2: T twenty OERH Cup at the moment, so he missed
- 2:06Speaker 2: a couple of Shield rounds, but he's been one of
- 2:08Speaker 2: the most consistent multi format batters in this country over
- 2:10Speaker 2: the last twelve to eighteen months. So Whetherwall's going to
- 2:13Speaker 2: really need to step up and it's a big challenge form
- 2:15Speaker 2: over the next couple weeks tas Many realistically only have
- 2:17Speaker 2: two more games, so these are his last two additions
- 2:19Speaker 2: to get some runs and if he's out LBW a
- 2:22Speaker 2: couple more times, that's basically a line through them really, and.
- 2:25Speaker 1: That is what can happen in an ASHES series, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: the moving up from Test cricket's first class cricket is
- 2:30Speaker 1: if the opposition find a deficiency, they can really hone
- 2:34Speaker 1: in on it in a way that they can't in
- 2:35Speaker 1: first class cricket because you're playing somebody else next week,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but when you're playing the same opponent five times in
- 2:40Speaker 1: a row. And he pretty clearly had a problem with
- 2:43Speaker 1: Jof for Archer, who is the bowler in that England attack,
- 2:45Speaker 1: who is a real proper step up from first class cricket.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And if you're having a problem with Joff Archer, you're
- 2:50Speaker 1: probably going to be having a problem with Khiso Robarda
- 2:52Speaker 1: and Marko Janson come to South Africa tour as well.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The Matt Renshaw point is a good one. We spoke
- 2:57Speaker 1: about earlier in the summer how his chances of Test
- 3:01Speaker 1: selection were hurt by being selected for Australia in the
- 3:04Speaker 1: one day team, and it feels like that might be
- 3:06Speaker 1: happening again. He's at the T twenty World Cup not
- 3:08Speaker 1: being able to play shield cricket. I'm not sure what
- 3:10Speaker 1: his plans are for when he comes back now that
- 3:12Speaker 1: Australia and knocked out. I imagine he'll play some shield
- 3:15Speaker 1: cricket as well, but I do think he is better placed.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He's maybe sitting slightly above Jack whether Orld in the
- 3:21Speaker 1: pecking order, even though whether all it is the income.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I suppose the advantage for Renshaw as he does
- 3:25Speaker 2: have a decade's worth of Shield experience behind him, and
- 3:28Speaker 2: the same with weather Ord to be fair, but obvi,
- 3:30Speaker 2: selectors will know what Renshaw can offer. And realistically, if
- 3:34Speaker 2: you're looking at who's the ideal person to partner at
- 3:36Speaker 2: Travis Head, it's something we've spoken about a bit, someone
- 3:39Speaker 2: to soak up pressure to really compliment Travis Head applying
- 3:42Speaker 2: that pressure. Realistically, that is Renshaw in a way, whether
- 3:45Speaker 2: Old and Head quite similar players. They're very aggressive, they
- 3:48Speaker 2: counter punch early. We saw whether Or going nearly run
- 3:51Speaker 2: a ball again in this game against New South Wales
- 3:54Speaker 2: in a pinkball game. So if you want that ideal
- 3:57Speaker 2: player to compliment Travis Head in theory, it's Matt Renshaw.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But still a lot of water going under the bridge
- 4:02Speaker 2: in seven months we saw how much chaos there was
- 4:04Speaker 2: in the month ahead of the Ashes series, how many
- 4:06Speaker 2: changes happened there, So still a long way ahead and
- 4:09Speaker 2: plenty of time or two games and an off season
- 4:12Speaker 2: for weather Or to.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Prove his worth.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Weatherorlds were sort of selected to complement Kwaja rather than Head.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And now what has been decided over the summer is
- 4:20Speaker 1: at least in the medium term, Head will be the opener.
- 4:22Speaker 1: There's never a middle order for Head, I think, at
- 4:24Speaker 1: least for the next eighteen months to the twenty twenty
- 4:26Speaker 1: seven ashes to where he will be the opener. So
- 4:31Speaker 1: Head and Weather are their mates. They seem to get
- 4:34Speaker 1: on well together, but I'm not sure that their styles
- 4:36Speaker 1: are complimentary. But if Weather all gets a couple of
- 4:38Speaker 1: hundred at the back end of this year summer, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: do think he could hold his place the number three.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Are you sure about Manus Slabushane. It sort of.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Seems like he's gone back to where he was at
- 4:48Speaker 1: the start well prior to the summer, where it looked
- 4:52Speaker 1: all looked a bit scratchy, and then he was so
- 4:54Speaker 1: good for Queensland at the start of the summer. Are
- 4:56Speaker 1: there any other questions about Mana Slabushane at three?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Certainly, I mean we're coaching three years since he scored
- 5:01Speaker 2: a Test hundred and for Australian number three, that's just
- 5:05Speaker 2: not acceptable. Really think about number three's the past, David Boone,
- 5:08Speaker 2: Ricky Ponting. If these players are gone three years without
- 5:10Speaker 2: one hundred, the knives would have been out for sure.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So yeah, Mardus needs to get some runs under his belt.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It's really simple. He did it back in September October
- 5:19Speaker 2: where the pitchers a bit flatter, there was the competition,
- 5:22Speaker 2: the Shield a bit more higher scoring, yes, but still
- 5:25Speaker 2: he bashed that door down. He's going to have to
- 5:26Speaker 2: do that again really because there was another really disappointing
- 5:29Speaker 2: Ashes series from him. We saw Jacob Bethel take his
- 5:32Speaker 2: chance at number three and Labashane he has to start
- 5:35Speaker 2: again basically this selection because this a couple of Shield
- 5:38Speaker 2: players are kind of not bashing the door down, but
- 5:40Speaker 2: kind of prodding, just kind of reminding national selectors of
- 5:42Speaker 2: where they're at. Curtis Patterson New South Wales, Peter Hanskin
- 5:45Speaker 2: for Victoria. Plenty of experience there. We're coming up to
- 5:49Speaker 2: this massive eighteen months and the Test side going from
- 5:51Speaker 2: the end of this year through to the Ashes. The
- 5:54Speaker 2: experience of those two guys could come in really handy
- 5:56Speaker 2: if they needed to change at number three.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Nathan mcswainey the other one who put a big two
- 5:59Speaker 1: high together for Australia a just before or during that
- 6:02Speaker 1: Ashes series, So Mars was the number three. Smith will
- 6:06Speaker 1: be four. That's locked in five was Kowaja in Sydney.
- 6:08Speaker 1: He's gone. Then we have Cameron Green, who seems to
- 6:11Speaker 1: be he seems to be the most talked about cricketer
- 6:13Speaker 1: in the country at the moment.
- 6:15Speaker 3: A poor summer from him.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I mean that Ashes series was very, very forgettable. I
- 6:19Speaker 2: don't think he got a fifty in across five Tests
- 6:22Speaker 2: with the ball. He had glimpses of excellence I think
- 6:25Speaker 2: in Perthy Bowl quite well, but after that was pretty ineffective,
- 6:29Speaker 2: quite expensive against basboll And.
- 6:31Speaker 4: He dropped some crucial catches as well. So a very
- 6:33Speaker 4: poor summer.
- 6:34Speaker 2: He hasn't nailed at the T twenty Wourd Cup either,
- 6:36Speaker 2: to prefer a lot of Australian players struggled in that
- 6:38Speaker 2: World Cup campaign.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I guess the problem with him.
- 6:40Speaker 2: He's got Bo Webster who just yesterday scored another SUPERB
- 6:44Speaker 2: hundred for Tasmania.
- 6:45Speaker 4: He saved a game.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Essentially, Tasmania eked out a draw against New South Wales,
- 6:49Speaker 2: potentially keeping their finals chances alive. I've to do the
- 6:52Speaker 2: maths on that one, but they're still in with a
- 6:54Speaker 2: slim chance. Bo Webster for me, is just a head
- 6:56Speaker 2: of Green in the pecking order. If there's only that
- 6:58Speaker 2: one spot for an all rounder. It just seems so
- 7:00Speaker 2: clear to me that Webster has to be there. He's
- 7:02Speaker 2: so versatile, he's contributed almost every time he's had that
- 7:05Speaker 2: call up. And the Test side Cameron Green. I guess
- 7:08Speaker 2: the good thing for him is there's that five spot now.
- 7:10Speaker 2: So in theory he could have Green Webster at five, six,
- 7:13Speaker 2: with Kerrey at seven, a couple extra bowling options, plenty
- 7:16Speaker 2: of batting that could work in his favor. But if
- 7:19Speaker 2: they want a specialist batter off that five spot, some
- 7:21Speaker 2: of the names mentioned earlier, he's in trouble because, yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 2: he hasn't got a fifty in any format since November.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It's been a really warrying draft man.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and Bo Webster was batting about a number eight
- 7:30Speaker 1: and number nine at the SCG. That's not going to
- 7:32Speaker 1: be his long term place in the Australian team. I
- 7:34Speaker 1: think probably the only advantage at the moment that Green
- 7:37Speaker 1: has over Webster is on the bowling front. Now, Webster
- 7:40Speaker 1: did take wickets with offspin at the STG, which I
- 7:42Speaker 1: think we were all just stunned, even bow himself was
- 7:44Speaker 1: done that Will Jacks got out in that way. But
- 7:47Speaker 1: what Green can do is he can execute that short
- 7:50Speaker 1: pitch strategy with the ball, which a lot of teams
- 7:53Speaker 1: in Test cricket are doing now, especially when the pitch
- 7:55Speaker 1: gets flat.
- 7:56Speaker 3: They bowl short a lot.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It's Australia's tactic and you know Scott Bowland doesn't really
- 8:02Speaker 1: do that. You need to have the bowler with the
- 8:04Speaker 1: bit of extra es. Green can do it with his height.
- 8:07Speaker 1: They make Cummans do it, Doggett did it early in
- 8:10Speaker 1: the Test. Bo Webster can't do that. So that's the
- 8:13Speaker 1: one advantage that Green has. But Webster's runs are just critical.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And the reason I said the three I don't think.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I think only three of the top seven from Sydney
- 8:22Speaker 1: locked in because Webster was eight. I think he will
- 8:26Speaker 1: be playing in that five or six role and it's
- 8:29Speaker 1: whether they play Green alongside him. I think Webster is
- 8:33Speaker 1: well ahead of the peking order right now.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it could come down to the conditions, the kind
- 8:36Speaker 2: of horses for courses, as you said, If the iron
- 8:39Speaker 2: flat conditions we've seen in England potentially so Africa as well,
- 8:42Speaker 2: Green will definitely come in very handy. But if they
- 8:44Speaker 2: got to the subcontinent, if they go to any spinning conditions,
- 8:48Speaker 2: I think Webster's going to be an absolute must because
- 8:50Speaker 2: he has that option as an extra spinner. They can
- 8:52Speaker 2: go the two strike spinners and have him there as
- 8:55Speaker 2: a third or fourth option if needed. With Travis Head
- 8:57Speaker 2: as well, So I guess that's advantage having a round
- 9:00Speaker 2: us who offer two different things.
- 9:01Speaker 4: You can have them both in the squads, no doubt.
- 9:03Speaker 2: They've both been a lot of squads test squads over
- 9:05Speaker 2: the coming eighteen months and really just assessing the pitch beforehand,
- 9:09Speaker 2: and it gets have come down to what role they're
- 9:10Speaker 2: going to play.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I do think in the short term, with these two
- 9:13Speaker 1: tests against Bangladesh and then the South Africa tour, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: think the selectors should pick who they intend to pick
- 9:20Speaker 1: for South Africa for Bangladesh because Bangladesh, we've seen the
- 9:26Speaker 1: T twenty World Cup that anybody can beat anybody, but
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's a bit a lot harder in test trick. You
- 9:30Speaker 1: have to be better than a team for five days
- 9:32Speaker 1: rather than twenty overs, so you don't What you don't
- 9:35Speaker 1: want is to be giving the opportunity against Bangladesh for
- 9:39Speaker 1: somebody against what will be your weaker opposition, to score
- 9:44Speaker 1: big runs. But if you don't intend to pick them
- 9:47Speaker 1: in South Africa. Then you leave yourself in a pickle,
- 9:51Speaker 1: like how Curtis Patterson got one hundred against Sri Lanka
- 9:54Speaker 1: and that remains his last Test match because that was
- 9:57Speaker 1: the weaker opposition and there was an Ashes coming up.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And yes that was different because Smith and warning we're
- 10:01Speaker 1: coming back from suspension. But I do think it's important
- 10:03Speaker 1: for selectors to peak who they intend to take to
- 10:06Speaker 1: South Africa, which is going to be a huge challenge.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Play them in Bangladesh. Start start that preparation against Bangladesh
- 10:14Speaker 1: in Northern Australia. Need to start that preparation there.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw that last summer when Sam Consas was
- 10:21Speaker 2: given to go against India, did quite well and then
- 10:24Speaker 2: they dropped him for games against Sri Lankan and the
- 10:26Speaker 2: World Test Championship Final. He found himself in a really
- 10:28Speaker 2: awkward position there finding to get back in the side,
- 10:30Speaker 2: which is exactly the point you're making. I've seen some
- 10:33Speaker 2: people suggest that they need to give Harry Dixon a goo,
- 10:35Speaker 2: they need to give Oliver Peak a go for these
- 10:37Speaker 2: upcoming Bangladesh tests.
- 10:39Speaker 4: But you're so right.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Unless you see of a Peak, for example, as playing
- 10:43Speaker 2: through that entire period right.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Through the end of the ashes.
- 10:46Speaker 2: What advantage you have in picking him other than giving
- 10:48Speaker 2: him a little bit of a reassurance that he's on
- 10:51Speaker 2: the national fringe. So right, pick that best side against Bangladesh.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Treat them with respect, because Australia lost to Bangladesh last night.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I played them in Test cricketer decade ago. To be fair,
- 11:02Speaker 2: get those players the best starting eleven in that side
- 11:05Speaker 2: and then go to safwor.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Whi's gonna be a huge tool.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It is.
- 11:07Speaker 1: On the bowling front, Australia again used six different semas
- 11:11Speaker 1: in the Ashes and the did not get as many
- 11:17Speaker 1: overs as they thought they were going to get one
- 11:18Speaker 1: Test out of pack Cummins one Test to one and
- 11:22Speaker 1: a half tests out of Nathan Lyon, but he only
- 11:24Speaker 1: bowled two overs in the first one. No test for
- 11:26Speaker 1: Josh Hazelwood. What it did show is Australia have bowling
- 11:30Speaker 1: depth because bowling came in. Nissa came in, dog It
- 11:33Speaker 1: came in, and Richardson came in. They all did a job.
- 11:35Speaker 1: But I think with these this aging attack and yes,
- 11:39Speaker 1: I think it's important that thirty five year olds now
- 11:41Speaker 1: are not like thirty five year olds in the nineties. Right,
- 11:43Speaker 1: they've had sports signs for their entire career. We can
- 11:45Speaker 1: prolong their careers and Mitchell Stark showed that beautifully in
- 11:48Speaker 1: the summer. But I do think there needs to be
- 11:51Speaker 1: a strategy with these bowlers, especially you look at someone
- 11:54Speaker 1: like Josh Hazelwood who is struggling to get up for
- 11:57Speaker 1: repeat tests and repeat series.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Look at this big.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Eighteen months the Australia has got in front of it
- 12:03Speaker 1: and say where do we need you? We need you
- 12:05Speaker 1: most in South Africa, and we need you most in England.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Dying about India. You're not going to India. We can
- 12:11Speaker 1: give or take the home summer we need you primed
- 12:14Speaker 1: for those tours. Or if you take Nathan Lyon, what
- 12:18Speaker 1: the summer showed is that he's no longer an automatic
- 12:21Speaker 1: selection at home, but he will be crucial for the
- 12:24Speaker 1: Bader Gaviscar trophy in India. So maybe the strategy for
- 12:27Speaker 1: Nathan Lyne is not that fast. How many tests you
- 12:30Speaker 1: play between now in India, but we need five of
- 12:33Speaker 1: you in India. So everything, everything is geared to that preparation.
- 12:37Speaker 2: It's at that point now because way too often Josh
- 12:39Speaker 2: Hazewood has suffered some injury in a home summer, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: I think over the last six years he's actually missed
- 12:45Speaker 2: more home tests than he's played due to injury.
- 12:47Speaker 4: So he is becoming a massive problem in that regards.
- 12:49Speaker 4: So you're absolutely right.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I guess the other issue is we look at this
- 12:53Speaker 2: next crop of young fastballers. You know, it's always a
- 12:55Speaker 2: big talking point, who are the young quick fastballers coming through?
- 12:59Speaker 2: They're all at the moment. Miley Beardman just sustained an
- 13:02Speaker 2: injury while in Pakistan. Spencer Johnson hasn't played in nine months.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Lance Morris missed the whole summer. Calum Weidler has missed
- 13:08Speaker 2: a big chunk of the summer as well. Joe Richardson
- 13:11Speaker 2: is thankful on the way back. We saw him in
- 13:12Speaker 2: the Ashes, he played a role there. He's just signed
- 13:14Speaker 2: it for a county contract as well, which is very exciting.
- 13:17Speaker 2: But so many of these great young fastballs just haven't
- 13:19Speaker 2: been proving themselves in Shield cricket because they've just been
- 13:22Speaker 2: recovering from little niggles, a little injuries. It's been a
- 13:25Speaker 2: pretty frustrating thing. So while yes, the issue of the
- 13:27Speaker 2: aging attack is there, Nieces, I think thirty six. Now
- 13:29Speaker 2: Bowlin's thirty six. They've done a job, They've done superbly. Realistically,
- 13:34Speaker 2: these young guys just need to put a summer together,
- 13:36Speaker 2: a red ball cricket, and then they can prove themselves
- 13:38Speaker 2: in the Test arena. Hopefully that happens sometime the next
- 13:42Speaker 2: eighteen months. We haven't mentioned Sean Abbott, who has been
- 13:44Speaker 2: on the verge of that Test side for six years.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Will he get a chance sometime next summer. I guess
- 13:50Speaker 2: it's reassuring that, as this summer showed, if Hazewood misses out,
- 13:54Speaker 2: if Cummens misses out, there's enough talent to keep Australia
- 13:58Speaker 2: winning essentially, and it's hats off to Michael Nissa. It
- 14:01Speaker 2: was so exciting to see him come in and play
- 14:03Speaker 2: a really important role in that Ashes series.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Australia's death was testers but ticks the box certainly on
- 14:09Speaker 1: the fast bowler death. Who knows how much you're going
- 14:12Speaker 1: to get out of Commens and Hazelwood. I think Cummen's
- 14:15Speaker 1: not playing the T twenty World Cup. Expect him to
- 14:17Speaker 1: be right for the two Tests against Bangladesh and the
- 14:21Speaker 1: South Africa tour, but we'll have to wait and see
- 14:23Speaker 1: how that happens. It's just look at that eleven that
- 14:27Speaker 1: they played at the stj There could be seven five, six,
- 14:31Speaker 1: seven changes for that. For the first Test against Bangladesh,
- 14:35Speaker 1: it's they won the ashes for one, they were dominant.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But we've got all these questions about the team. Oh
- 14:41Speaker 1: it's bizarre, isn't it. There's a really exciting pool of
- 14:43Speaker 1: players who can come in at whatever stage.
- 14:47Speaker 4: And there will be needed.
- 14:48Speaker 2: There will be debutantes over the next eighteen months. It's
- 14:50Speaker 2: the schedule is so packed during that period and then
- 14:53Speaker 2: to top it off as a World Cup right at
- 14:55Speaker 2: the end and let in the show we're going to
- 14:56Speaker 2: be speaking to Liam Scott. Will Sutherland got the century
- 15:01Speaker 2: for Victoria this week.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Jack Edwards is.
- 15:06Speaker 2: He's suffered a bit of an injury setback recently this week,
- 15:08Speaker 2: but he's always sort of pushing his case for nationalunas.
- 15:11Speaker 2: These guys need to be ready to step up at
- 15:13Speaker 2: any moment because it is an aging pace attack. Changes
- 15:17Speaker 2: will happen from game to game. I think they're playing
- 15:20Speaker 2: across three or four different concerts during this ateen months.
- 15:22Speaker 2: The conditions will differ. There's a chance for anyone in
- 15:25Speaker 2: a shield if you can performances together to get a
- 15:26Speaker 2: baggy green.
- 15:27Speaker 1: One guy who did put a couple of really strong
- 15:30Speaker 1: performances together in the Sheffildshire was Sam Harper. Twin tons
- 15:33Speaker 1: for Victoria. What a sensation and not move up to
- 15:35Speaker 1: the top.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Of the order.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Well it did in the Big Bash as well.
- 15:38Speaker 2: He had struggled for a couple of years with the
- 15:40Speaker 2: Melbourne Stars, batting around three or four, was really struggling
- 15:44Speaker 2: actually the previous summer, but then they elevated him to
- 15:46Speaker 2: open and he absolutely nailed it. I'm pretty sure he
- 15:48Speaker 2: was player of the Tournament this summer. And now, even
- 15:51Speaker 2: though predominantly batting at five six seven for Victoria, in
- 15:54Speaker 2: the Shield, he gets a chance to open on a
- 15:56Speaker 2: bouncy whack a deck against an experienced West Australian attack
- 16:00Speaker 2: and on both innings nails one hundred in the first
- 16:04Speaker 2: innings is fifty came about twenty nine to thirty balls
- 16:06Speaker 2: or something even got off to a blistering start and
- 16:09Speaker 2: as a couple of people have said, it's a really
- 16:10Speaker 2: good time to be an opener in Shield cricket because
- 16:12Speaker 2: there is that spot there.
- 16:13Speaker 4: We spoke about Renshaw, but he's.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Not a certainty by any means, if you can maintain
- 16:17Speaker 2: this for a couple more shield rounds, maybe put another
- 16:20Speaker 2: match winning performance in the final, there's every chance of
- 16:22Speaker 2: been playing as a specialist keep. We saw Josh English
- 16:25Speaker 2: play as a specialist as a specialist batter rather during
- 16:27Speaker 2: the ashes. That backfired a bit. But Sammy Harper, what
- 16:31Speaker 2: an exciting story he is. I mean, he's been around
- 16:33Speaker 2: the fringes of for Victoria for nearly a decade and yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 2: he's only had about two first class hundreds before this week.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I know he's always doubled that t Yeah, I think he.
- 16:40Speaker 1: If we were talking about Sam Harper potential national selection
- 16:43Speaker 1: before this week, it was probably white Bull and probably
- 16:47Speaker 1: as the wicket keeper. But if he is going to
- 16:49Speaker 1: go to the top of the order for Victoria and
- 16:51Speaker 1: score hundreds, he's suddenly specialist batsman conversation, because Alex Carrey's
- 16:56Speaker 1: not going anywhere for a few years, that spot is
- 16:58Speaker 1: not going to be available. If there's definitely spots available
- 17:01Speaker 1: as a batsman, So that's exciting to Sam Harper. And
- 17:03Speaker 1: it just seems that everything Chris Rogers touches for Victoria
- 17:06Speaker 1: at the moment is working out for them. They locked
- 17:09Speaker 1: in their home final, and they are far and away
- 17:12Speaker 1: the dominant side in Sheffielshil cricket at the moment.
- 17:15Speaker 2: They've locked in that final two rounds to go, they're
- 17:18Speaker 2: comfortably the best team in the competition and it's going
- 17:20Speaker 2: to take something special to stop them, really, I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 2: they just seem to be so far ahead of everyone
- 17:24Speaker 2: else at the moment. Just we didn't have an episode
- 17:26Speaker 2: after the previous round, but Victoria did suffer a loss
- 17:29Speaker 2: coming out of the Big Bash season, so there was
- 17:32Speaker 2: perhaps a few warning signs there. But that win against
- 17:35Speaker 2: Wa Inwa three hundred and something runs is so dominant
- 17:39Speaker 2: against State. Richardson was in that attack and see that
- 17:42Speaker 2: recently with the triple champions in Shield cricket, and so yeah,
- 17:46Speaker 2: Victoria there's a really fantastic balance of experience and young,
- 17:50Speaker 2: exciting players. There a couple I've already mentioned, Fergus O'Neil,
- 17:54Speaker 2: Scott Boland, two very similar players who just seemed to
- 17:56Speaker 2: contribute on any pitch. And yeah, that batting order with
- 18:00Speaker 2: Peter Hanscombe leading the charge is just the strongest in
- 18:03Speaker 2: the country.
- 18:03Speaker 4: So yeah, it's going to take something pretty spcial to
- 18:05Speaker 4: stop them.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Does feel like every single conversation that you have about
- 18:09Speaker 1: national selection and who might come in. There's a Victorian
- 18:12Speaker 1: in the conversation we're talking about open it's Kempbell. Kellaway's
- 18:15Speaker 1: in that conversation. Middle order batsman Hanscom's in the conversation
- 18:18Speaker 1: if it's you know Todd Murphy was in the squad
- 18:20Speaker 1: as a spinner. Fergusonnely's in the quick conversation. Scott Bowland
- 18:23Speaker 1: got sixp again on the weekend because.
- 18:25Speaker 3: He's just so good.
- 18:26Speaker 1: They are just doing everything right at the moment and
- 18:29Speaker 1: their skipper will subtle in first one hundred. He had
- 18:31Speaker 1: to get there when Victoria went nine down Scott bowl
- 18:35Speaker 1: and did his job at the other end, but it
- 18:36Speaker 1: was great to see him get a centry.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Well.
- 18:37Speaker 2: It used to be in New South Wales we're producing
- 18:39Speaker 2: all the future Test prospects and now that's kind of
- 18:42Speaker 2: switched a bit. He's the Wells again, are probably going
- 18:44Speaker 2: to miss out on the final unless they do something
- 18:46Speaker 2: pretty special the next couple weeks. They just parted ways
- 18:50Speaker 2: with their head coach Greg Shippet, who will leave at
- 18:52Speaker 2: the end of this season. A lot of young siding
- 18:55Speaker 2: players have jumped ship and joined other states. Jason Sayer,
- 18:58Speaker 2: Nathan McAndrew, Nathan Ellis if the World's just maybe isn't
- 19:02Speaker 2: necessarily the place to go to for future Test stars
- 19:06Speaker 2: and were like it was a generation ago.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Victoria is going to take up that.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Charge certainly doing fantastic work at the moment. Victoria.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Coming up on Domesticated we speak to one of the
- 19:14Speaker 1: most exciting young all rounders in the country, South Australia's
- 19:18Speaker 1: Liam Scott's. Well, there's not many cricketers in the country
- 19:21Speaker 1: in better form than this man, Liam Scott, South Australia's
- 19:25Speaker 1: could be coming South Australia's star or arounder.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Liam, thanks so much.
- 19:28Speaker 5: For joining us. No, thanks for having me, guys.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Pleasure to be on career best five for thirty three
- 19:34Speaker 1: during the week, including the wicked of ISBN Kuwaja, which
- 19:36Speaker 1: is a nice one to get. You must be so
- 19:38Speaker 1: pleased with the way you're bowling at the moment.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I think as an all around the best part is
- 19:45Speaker 6: that you can have an impact on different aspects of
- 19:48Speaker 6: the game and different phases of the game. So for me,
- 19:50Speaker 6: whether it's bat ball or in the field, just trying
- 19:52Speaker 6: to have an impact on the result is always nice,
- 19:54Speaker 6: so it was lucky to go my way this week,
- 19:58Speaker 6: which was a nice little bit of a ward.
- 20:00Speaker 2: It was an important win as well for South Australia.
- 20:03Speaker 2: There's only a couple of rounds left until that Shield Final.
- 20:06Speaker 2: What's the mood like in the camp with what's proving
- 20:08Speaker 2: to be quite a tight finals race with Victoria secrete
- 20:11Speaker 2: in that spot in another spot for grabs.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely, it's really tight this year.
- 20:16Speaker 6: Obviously the vix have played some really nice cricket and
- 20:19Speaker 6: deserved and be secured that Shield final spot, but I
- 20:22Speaker 6: think the rest of the competition anyone can sort of
- 20:24Speaker 6: make that last spot, which is exciting in itself, so
- 20:28Speaker 6: it means every game you've got.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Something to play for.
- 20:30Speaker 6: But I think we're starting to play our best cricket
- 20:33Speaker 6: now and that was pretty evident at the Gabbo just gone.
- 20:36Speaker 5: So hopefully we're heating up at the right time and
- 20:39Speaker 5: we can really come home strongly.
- 20:41Speaker 1: As an all round it you're in a unique position
- 20:43Speaker 1: when you turn up to a ground and you see
- 20:45Speaker 1: a big green seema like it was at the Gabba,
- 20:47Speaker 1: you know you're either going to have a really tough
- 20:48Speaker 1: day with the bat or you're going to be in
- 20:50Speaker 1: for a fun day with the ball. Have you ever
- 20:52Speaker 1: played on a pitch that looked quite so green as
- 20:54Speaker 1: the Gabba looked on day one?
- 20:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it was funny.
- 21:00Speaker 6: I think when you saw the footage online it actually
- 21:02Speaker 6: looked a lot greater on the camera than probably what
- 21:05Speaker 6: it was in person.
- 21:07Speaker 5: But yeah, it was a good wicket. I mean it
- 21:09Speaker 5: was tough.
- 21:10Speaker 6: It was tough for batting, but obviously bowling wise it
- 21:13Speaker 6: was pretty nice. So pretty nice to roll out of
- 21:15Speaker 6: one of them. We actually played a game at the
- 21:18Speaker 6: Whack for a couple of years ago, which was over
- 21:20Speaker 6: in a couple of days, so I'd say.
- 21:21Speaker 5: That probably took the chocolates, but no, it was definitely
- 21:25Speaker 5: boll of friendly.
- 21:27Speaker 2: And while it's been another suburb season few with the ball,
- 21:29Speaker 2: it was in December they got that breakout one hundred
- 21:32Speaker 2: against Tasmania, your first Sheffield Shield hundred. I guess it
- 21:35Speaker 2: must be really satisfying to now be contributing in a
- 21:38Speaker 2: big way in both facets of the game.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 21:42Speaker 6: I think, as I mentioned just before, you want to
- 21:45Speaker 6: have the impact on the game and the nature's and
- 21:47Speaker 6: all round it is that you can do that with
- 21:49Speaker 6: button ball, I feel like I'm playing some really good cricket.
- 21:54Speaker 6: So yeah, I think my game's in a good space
- 21:56Speaker 6: at the moment and hopefully I can just continue.
- 21:58Speaker 5: That where or I am and whoever I'm playing.
- 22:01Speaker 1: For the last eighteen months or so, for you, Liam,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you've seen huge improvements. You're averaging nearly forty with the
- 22:07Speaker 1: bat in Shield cricket and twenty five with the ball.
- 22:09Speaker 1: You were the Adelaide Strikers leading run scorer, adding to
- 22:12Speaker 1: that the One Day Cup Player of the tournament last year.
- 22:14Speaker 1: What have you put your improvement in the last eighteen
- 22:17Speaker 1: months down to?
- 22:20Speaker 5: Oh, I think, you know, it's obviously self belief.
- 22:24Speaker 6: I've got some good opportunity to really express my skills,
- 22:29Speaker 6: especially this year with a Strikers batting at four or five,
- 22:32Speaker 6: so a little bit higher than previously.
- 22:34Speaker 5: So you get a little bit more chance. But yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 5: I think I've got really.
- 22:38Speaker 6: Good support from South Australia and Ryan Harris and all
- 22:42Speaker 6: the other coaching staff and then at the strikes as
- 22:45Speaker 6: well painters.
- 22:45Speaker 5: So I think I feel like my game is just.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Is really suited to how they have helped me and
- 22:53Speaker 6: gone about with their coaching styles and really enjoying where
- 22:56Speaker 6: I'm playing, and I think if you're enjoying and having fun,
- 22:59Speaker 6: then it takes a little bit less pressure on field performances.
- 23:04Speaker 6: So I'd say it's just having fun. And really that
- 23:08Speaker 6: self belief factor has definitely been there.
- 23:12Speaker 2: If we could go back a little bit to the
- 23:14Speaker 2: start of your career, you were born in Sydney, just
- 23:16Speaker 2: down the road from the studio. Actually you had family
- 23:19Speaker 2: in Queensland. How did you end up in South Australia.
- 23:22Speaker 2: What was that journey from New so Wells to the
- 23:25Speaker 2: Red Back setup.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a bit. It was a bit strange.
- 23:30Speaker 6: I finished school in Sydney and then mum and dad
- 23:33Speaker 6: dad got relocated for work up to Brisbane, so mum,
- 23:37Speaker 6: dad and my brother Rory moved up up north to
- 23:40Speaker 6: Brisbane at the time, and I was actually in Europe
- 23:43Speaker 6: traveling with a few mates after school when I had
- 23:46Speaker 6: a sort of decision to make on whether to stay
- 23:49Speaker 6: in Sydney, go to Brisbane or venture down to Adelaide.
- 23:52Speaker 6: And it was lucky enough that Sakka showed some interest
- 23:56Speaker 6: and really wanted me to come down and work hard
- 23:59Speaker 6: and train.
- 23:59Speaker 5: With their and get some opportunities. And second eleven and
- 24:02Speaker 5: just push my case that way.
- 24:04Speaker 6: So I took a leap of faith and I'm really
- 24:07Speaker 6: thankful for Soaka and the opportunities they gave me.
- 24:11Speaker 5: And that's a little quick story on how I ventured
- 24:15Speaker 5: down there.
- 24:16Speaker 1: You're certainly taking that opportunity with both hands at the moment.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Lamb did so well with the Adlaide strikers in the
- 24:23Speaker 1: Big Bash Big ninety odd in one of the games.
- 24:24Speaker 1: You're clearly comfortable in front of the big crowds of
- 24:27Speaker 1: the Big Bash and it really seems like you are
- 24:29Speaker 1: now comfortable at the level of first class cricket.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Is that how you feel?
- 24:35Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure.
- 24:35Speaker 6: I think sometimes it can be one of those things
- 24:39Speaker 6: where you feel as though you have to sort of
- 24:42Speaker 6: justify your spot or it takes a while to feel
- 24:45Speaker 6: like you belong and.
- 24:47Speaker 5: I think performances sometimes dictate that.
- 24:49Speaker 6: And I feel like my performances have meant that I
- 24:52Speaker 6: feel really comfortable and cemented my spot in the soccer team.
- 24:56Speaker 5: And I guess I've got some opportunities.
- 24:58Speaker 6: This year with Australia A and learning and being involved
- 25:01Speaker 6: in that setup I think only adds to that self
- 25:04Speaker 6: belief and self confidence, so that when you come back
- 25:07Speaker 6: to whatever lever it is, where it's big bash your.
- 25:10Speaker 5: Cricket or one day cricket, you really know that you
- 25:12Speaker 5: can go out there and dominate and try and put
- 25:14Speaker 5: your best foot forward.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Obviously the tour to India with Australia a a few
- 25:18Speaker 2: months ago, but also coming up you've signed with glarcesters
- 25:22Speaker 2: here in the T twenty Blast. Getting these opportunities overseas
- 25:25Speaker 2: must only help your cricket even further and make it
- 25:28Speaker 2: more of an all rounded player.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I played a
- 25:33Speaker 5: few years ago just some club brig it over in
- 25:35Speaker 5: the UK. Love my time over there.
- 25:37Speaker 6: So to go over and be part of a professional
- 25:40Speaker 6: setup and I guess been in an environment where again
- 25:44Speaker 6: you can learn off different coaches, you can learn off
- 25:46Speaker 6: different players and really add some elements hopefully to my
- 25:50Speaker 6: game is only going to hold me in good stead
- 25:52Speaker 6: hopefully when I come back for the Australian summer.
- 25:55Speaker 5: So really looking forward to getting over there and playing some,
- 25:58Speaker 5: hopefully some good cricket for Glouster.
- 26:00Speaker 1: You look around world cricket at the moment, Liam and
- 26:03Speaker 1: you see so few genuine three format all round. It
- 26:08Speaker 1: it seems to be one of the hardest things you
- 26:09Speaker 1: can do in cricket because you've got so much going on.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I'd want to ask you how challenging you find that,
- 26:14Speaker 1: but you do seem to be making it look so easy.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I think.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 26:22Speaker 6: To have impact on the game, as I said earlier,
- 26:25Speaker 6: is what you want to do. So whatever team, whatever
- 26:29Speaker 6: format it is, it just it makes it all worthwhile.
- 26:32Speaker 6: There's obviously some challenges that come with it. Is a
- 26:35Speaker 6: higher work, low change, can go a little bit longer
- 26:38Speaker 6: than some of the other guys, but I thoroughly enjoy
- 26:43Speaker 6: it and I'm having a great time playing all three
- 26:46Speaker 6: formats at the moment. So yeah, hopefully I can stay
- 26:50Speaker 6: in the park and stay fit, and yeah, keep.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Going for a while longer.
- 26:58Speaker 2: And I suppose the long term goal for your is
- 27:00Speaker 2: obviously going to be national representation. Do you see the
- 27:03Speaker 2: most likely avenue for you being in the white ball
- 27:05Speaker 2: formats or is the Baggie Green a priority for yourself?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Do you see as the most likely path to representing
- 27:11Speaker 2: your country?
- 27:14Speaker 6: Not too sure to be honest, I think as you
- 27:16Speaker 6: keep growing up in Australia, all I've wanted to do
- 27:20Speaker 6: is wear a Baggie Green, so for me, hopefully one
- 27:23Speaker 6: day that will come. But in saying that, playing any
- 27:26Speaker 6: game for Australia would be a dream come through. So
- 27:29Speaker 6: whatever format that is, white ball, red bull, I'd try
- 27:33Speaker 6: and take it with both hands.
- 27:35Speaker 5: There's some quality players out there at the moment, so.
- 27:39Speaker 6: Yeah, it's obviously a tough, tough squad to break into
- 27:42Speaker 6: and there's plenty of good players that are dominating domestic cricket.
- 27:46Speaker 6: So I can only keep controlling what I can control,
- 27:50Speaker 6: and that's trying to put the performances on the board
- 27:52Speaker 6: and then hopefully one day that opportunity will come my way. Well,
- 27:55Speaker 6: you're doing a fantastic job of putting your name in considerations. Liam,
- 27:59Speaker 6: thanks so much joining us and good luck for the
- 28:01Speaker 6: rest of your season with South Australia.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Thanks guys, thanks for having me.
