- 1:31Speaker 1: I'm Chris Hansen. First up today. There are divorces and
- 1:35Speaker 1: then there are wars. For New York doctor Ira Bernstein
- 1:38Speaker 1: and his wife, it was definitely the latter, and the
- 1:41Speaker 1: battle over the money got a whole lot more complicated
- 1:44Speaker 1: when a very pretty brunette worked your way.
- 1:46Speaker 10: Into the picture.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Here is today's top story, A deadly plan. It's a
- 1:52Speaker 1: twisted turned toxic love triangle.
- 1:55Speaker 10: Well now the.
- 1:57Speaker 7: Most horrific of all crimes.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Featuring at her wife who loved money that.
- 2:05Speaker 7: I think it was a combination of a bad marriage
- 2:10Speaker 7: with acid being tossed into the mix.
- 2:14Speaker 1: A beautiful, scheming girlfriend who loved someone else's husband she wanted.
- 2:22Speaker 10: In on the gravy training she definitely wanted it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And a wealthy foot doctor who was about to step
- 2:27Speaker 1: in it big time.
- 2:29Speaker 10: You can't make that up.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Almost everyone in Rockland County, New York knows Ira Bernstein.
- 2:36Speaker 1: He was a big shot in town who mastered a
- 2:38Speaker 1: small fortune as a real estate tycoon and the local paediatrist.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He had a significant amount of cash flow of millions
- 2:48Speaker 2: and millions of dollars.
- 2:50Speaker 1: The good doctor even treated the entire fleet of feet
- 2:53Speaker 1: at the Ramapo Police department. He was not unknown to
- 2:56Speaker 1: this police department.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Pistil and myself were.
- 3:00Speaker 10: He treated you? Yep? And you were happy with his services.
- 3:05Speaker 8: Yes.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Doctor Bernstein was as well known for his war of
- 3:08Speaker 1: the roses with his wife as he was for his
- 3:11Speaker 1: healing hands.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Susan Bernstein would threaten to have Ira arrested while they
- 3:16Speaker 7: were married. There's an audio tape to support that.
- 3:22Speaker 11: Healing.
- 3:24Speaker 1: There were phone recordings on both sides, but there are
- 3:28Speaker 1: some of doctor Bernstein threatening her life.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yes, repeatedly.
- 3:34Speaker 12: Do you want to yell at me all to hang
- 3:35Speaker 12: up on?
- 3:35Speaker 5: You're crazy?
- 3:36Speaker 1: You are done in the battle over the family fortune.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The Bernstein stay married, but began living separate lives. Police
- 3:44Speaker 1: say it didn't take long for the foot doctor to
- 3:46Speaker 1: develop a fetish for a sexy exportician named Kelly Gribolok.
- 3:51Speaker 10: She was a funeral director.
- 3:52Speaker 1: She was the thirty five year old beauty, had just
- 3:56Speaker 1: come out of her own nasty divorce and even uglier custody.
- 4:01Speaker 1: A little TLC from Ira was a prescription for romance.
- 4:05Speaker 1: How did Kelly and Ira meet? Kelly and Ira met
- 4:09Speaker 1: originally when Kelly was a patient of IRA's.
- 4:13Speaker 10: They were romantic they were.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Kelly was known as a model citizen in Rockland County,
- 4:18Speaker 1: but cops did know her name. She had been involved
- 4:22Speaker 1: in a tragic death. Kelly had been in a fatal
- 4:27Speaker 1: car accident before where she was driving.
- 4:29Speaker 2: She was driving, she struck a pedestrian and was not
- 4:33Speaker 2: charged with a crime.
- 4:35Speaker 10: As far as you could tell, that was an accident.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yes, cops tell me. Kelly fell hard for the wealthy
- 4:41Speaker 1: pediatrist and eventually took a job at one of his
- 4:44Speaker 1: medical centers. In fact, she's even seen driving around town
- 4:48Speaker 1: in his Maserati.
- 4:49Speaker 5: She loved Iren Bernstein.
- 4:52Speaker 1: When the wife gets wind of her husband's sexy, young girlfriend,
- 4:56Speaker 1: she files for divorce. I'm with my mom in Florida,
- 5:03Speaker 1: but they decided to stay married for the love of money.
- 5:07Speaker 2: As Susan Bernstein would put it, Ira didn't want to
- 5:10Speaker 2: divide up his empire.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I think he felt it was unfair, and he expressed
- 5:17Speaker 3: that to his girlfriend Kelly as well.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Ira was now becoming more and more frustrated, and Kelly
- 5:22Speaker 1: didn't like seeing the love of her life so upset.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I think she wanted to please Ira and had this
- 5:29Speaker 3: vision of her and Ira living together with.
- 5:34Speaker 10: A lot of money.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So copsay Kelly hashed an evil plan to get rid
- 5:39Speaker 1: of the one thing standing in the way of there
- 5:41Speaker 1: happily ever after IRA's wife. Do you think she really
- 5:47Speaker 1: wanted to have Susan Bernstein killed?
- 5:50Speaker 5: Absolutely, no question, no doubt.
- 5:52Speaker 4: She comes from a little means. She stood to gain
- 5:56Speaker 4: fancy cars, big houses, the stature to be with the doc.
- 6:01Speaker 1: All Kelly needed was a hit man to arrange the murder.
- 6:04Speaker 1: So she went shopping. She was shopping this hit.
- 6:07Speaker 7: She was shopping the hit she was Who does that?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Kelly gribloc Police say Kelly was determined to get the
- 6:13Speaker 1: job done, claiming she propositioned three different people. They all
- 6:18Speaker 1: say no, and then Kelly runs into an old buddy.
- 6:22Speaker 7: While Kelly was shopping for a car, a BMW in
- 6:24Speaker 7: Rockland County, she started a conversation with Markenzie.
- 6:28Speaker 10: Lussante, car salesman.
- 6:30Speaker 7: Car salesman, absolutely a car salesman by day, according to Kelly,
- 6:34Speaker 7: he was a hit man by night.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Markenzie Lussant had once sold Kelly a car. What was
- 6:41Speaker 1: Markenzie asked to do?
- 6:42Speaker 4: Markensie was asked if he knew anybody they can help
- 6:46Speaker 4: take out the client's boyfriend's.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Wife, Markensie and Kelly begin covert meetings at this parking lot.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Believe it or not, it's right across from one of
- 6:56Speaker 1: doctor Bernstein's offices and the police station, patching a plan
- 7:03Speaker 1: to take IRA's wife out. What Kelly doesn't know is
- 7:08Speaker 1: Markeenzi's car has a special feature. It's secretly wired with
- 7:13Speaker 1: cameras bank ups. It would appear from these audio and
- 7:18Speaker 1: videotapes that Kelly was very serious about finding someone to
- 7:23Speaker 1: kill IRA's wife.
- 7:24Speaker 10: I think she was very determined.
- 7:25Speaker 13: Who means she should called me a plastic to her?
- 7:28Speaker 6: No means.
- 7:29Speaker 1: She had even devised a despicable and early familiar plan
- 7:34Speaker 1: of how to off Susan.
- 7:35Speaker 8: What about like a either a hit and run, like
- 7:38Speaker 8: when she's getting out of a car, or like plane
- 7:40Speaker 8: an access to make back up into where the guys stays.
- 7:42Speaker 8: As I'm there, you know I was planing an accident,
- 7:45Speaker 8: but there's no investigation.
- 7:47Speaker 10: What was the plot supposed to be?
- 7:49Speaker 3: The original plot was to try to be in a
- 7:52Speaker 3: car accident where she gets run off the road or.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Struck Susan the wife being dead.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Right, and have the other driver that struck her stay
- 8:03Speaker 3: on the scene and have the police take an accident
- 8:06Speaker 3: report and no one go away right, didn't.
- 8:10Speaker 8: Packed IPA can't be a robbery, It can't figure out
- 8:13Speaker 8: there's a handle out of the car that gets out to.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Be Really Kelly had been in an accident when she
- 8:20Speaker 1: was younger where someone was killed, that is correct.
- 8:25Speaker 10: Was this just an irony or did this play into
- 8:28Speaker 10: the antel scheme very well? Is ironic.
- 8:31Speaker 1: After nearly a dozen meetings, the car salesman makes Kelly
- 8:34Speaker 1: an offer she can't refuse. They negotiated in did one
- 8:40Speaker 1: hundred grand.
- 8:41Speaker 4: It actually started off at two hundred thousand, came quickly
- 8:45Speaker 4: down to one hundred thousand dollars for price.
- 8:48Speaker 5: On Susan Bernstein's.
- 8:49Speaker 8: Head, you think you want a couple of seats, right,
- 8:52Speaker 8: you know, if you want to after you get up
- 8:54Speaker 8: to be safe, if you want to your car at the.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Moment you get up the car.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But where would a single mom come up with that
- 9:00Speaker 1: kind of money? Turns out it was what the doctor ordered,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and well you gotta make sure people.
- 9:09Speaker 10: You got to make sure a PIP for me up next.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Ira Bursty wanted two things. He wanted his wife dead.
- 9:15Speaker 2: What he wanted one hundred guarantee that he was going
- 9:18Speaker 2: to get away with it.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The one thing that turns out to be the pediatrist's
- 9:23Speaker 1: achilles heel was Markinzie, a legitimate hitman. We're back with
- 9:32Speaker 1: more on today's story. A deadly plan. One hundred thousand
- 9:35Speaker 1: dollars for one dead wife. That's the deal laid out
- 9:39Speaker 1: for a would be hit man, the offer negotiated by
- 9:41Speaker 1: the new girlfriend of a rich doctor unhappy in his marriage. Unfortunately,
- 9:46Speaker 1: for the devious duo, the entire deal would be caught
- 9:49Speaker 1: on hidden camera. Kelly Gribilla, the girlfriend of wealthy New
- 9:56Speaker 1: York pediatrist Ira Bernstein, is proposing a devi steal to
- 10:00Speaker 1: luxury car salesman Marckenzie Lussant. But it's not to buy
- 10:08Speaker 1: a new car. It's to take her lover as a
- 10:11Speaker 1: strange wife out. You've got a prominent doctor dating a
- 10:19Speaker 1: woman who goes to a car salesman and says, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: need somebody to help kill my boyfriend's soon to be
- 10:26Speaker 1: ex wife.
- 10:28Speaker 4: The way this whole story unfolds, you just couldn't make
- 10:31Speaker 4: any of it up.
- 10:32Speaker 10: They want the full way to make sure that they
- 10:34Speaker 10: have been.
- 10:38Speaker 1: The murder for hire seemed to be the sole statistic
- 10:40Speaker 1: idea of the jealous girlfriend.
- 10:43Speaker 7: I think she had an intent to replace Susan Bernstein.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But it turns out Kelly was just following the doctor's orders.
- 10:56Speaker 1: That's doctor Bernstein prescribe having the lethal hit and rod
- 11:01Speaker 1: that would kill his wife Susan.
- 11:04Speaker 10: Where you got to make sure, you got to make sure.
- 11:07Speaker 6: No, I agree.
- 11:09Speaker 2: He got in the car with a hitman and started
- 11:11Speaker 2: talking about how he wanted his wife killed, and just
- 11:14Speaker 2: as importantly to him was that he not be investigated
- 11:16Speaker 2: and not get caught.
- 11:18Speaker 9: We have.
- 11:23Speaker 10: What was the motivation for having Susan Bernstein killed?
- 11:26Speaker 5: Money, plain and simple, plane and simple money.
- 11:29Speaker 1: To his neighbors in Rockland County, New York, the doctor
- 11:32Speaker 1: was a medical genius, but behind the surgical mask, cops
- 11:36Speaker 1: claim he was a greedy monster, willing to do anything
- 11:39Speaker 1: to save his fortune.
- 11:40Speaker 2: He was a local doctor, ostensibly successful at his practice,
- 11:45Speaker 2: but when you took a closer look at his books,
- 11:49Speaker 2: it became clear that there were a lot of improprieties.
- 11:53Speaker 1: In fact, two insurance adjusters actually launched an extensive investigation
- 11:58Speaker 1: into Bernstein's medical practice. Cops claim they found something fishy. Indeed,
- 12:03Speaker 1: was going on with the foot doctors in what way.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Building for patients that actually weren't in the office building,
- 12:09Speaker 2: for procedures that didn't take place, things of that nature.
- 12:11Speaker 10: Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yes, I think he always went for more money, and
- 12:15Speaker 3: I think that's why he got involved with the insurance fraud.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Some media reports suggest Susan Bernstein found out about her
- 12:22Speaker 1: husband's sheety business and began blackmailing him unless he signed
- 12:26Speaker 1: over half his multimillion dollar fortune to her in a divorce.
- 12:35Speaker 3: When he saw that that was being taken away from
- 12:37Speaker 3: him by his ex wife, I think it drove him
- 12:40Speaker 3: over the edge.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Detectives believe that doctor began using his pretty young mistress
- 12:48Speaker 1: Kelly as a puppet to do his dirty work while
- 12:52Speaker 1: he pulled the strings safely from his operating room.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Kelly was a poem. In my opinion, Kelly Bribleluk was
- 13:00Speaker 2: ra Bernstein's way of getting out of his marriage with
- 13:04Speaker 2: every penny that he had before Susan died.
- 13:09Speaker 6: That you forgive everything.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Done, everything's done by Kelly.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Kelly is the person he puts out front, so if
- 13:15Speaker 4: anything goes wrong, Kelly's going to be the one that
- 13:17Speaker 4: goes down.
- 13:17Speaker 5: He's being smart that way.
- 13:19Speaker 1: The one hundred thousand dollars hit on Susan seems to
- 13:22Speaker 1: be a go and suddenly Kelly tells Markenzie the pediatrists
- 13:26Speaker 1: may be having a change of heart. Cops say that
- 13:34Speaker 1: doctor didn't have a change of heart. He was starting
- 13:37Speaker 1: to smell a rat, wondering if Markenzie was really an
- 13:41Speaker 1: undercover cop.
- 13:43Speaker 10: Was she suspicious?
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yes, I think they both were suspicious. All of a sudden,
- 13:48Speaker 1: there's a new twist in the deadly deal.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Oun't nowhere?
- 13:52Speaker 4: It was like, hey, we need to insurance fiskeets beat
- 13:54Speaker 4: up now.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Kelly offers Markenzie another five thousand dollars to have the
- 13:59Speaker 1: two insurance as investigating doctor Bernstein's practice roughed up. If
- 14:04Speaker 1: the doctor is satisfied with the results, he will move
- 14:07Speaker 1: forward with Susan's murder.
- 14:09Speaker 2: We believe that this was a test. If he was
- 14:11Speaker 2: a police officer, it wasn't going to happen. And if
- 14:15Speaker 2: he was not a police officer, then he would get
- 14:17Speaker 2: these two people beat up and put out of work
- 14:20Speaker 2: to the point where they couldn't continue their investigation into
- 14:22Speaker 2: him at that time, And just a.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Few days later, Marckenzie requests an appointment with the doctor,
- 14:29Speaker 1: saying he wants to personally show the doctor he's executed
- 14:32Speaker 1: his orders. Doctor Bernstein is clearly paranoid. He's being watched.
- 14:41Speaker 4: And he got inside. He was just saying, list, I'm
- 14:42Speaker 4: just scared. I'm nervous about it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And then something happens that gives the pediatrist a severe
- 14:48Speaker 1: case of cold feet. The doctor gets suspicious, even thinks
- 14:52Speaker 1: he sees a camera.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Not only does he think he sees a camera, he
- 14:55Speaker 4: actually does see the camera.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He's right there, buried in the back seat.
- 15:00Speaker 5: It was a very shy and he points right out.
- 15:01Speaker 10: He goes, what is that.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Up next?
- 15:05Speaker 5: The doctor kept looking at it.
- 15:06Speaker 1: The pediatrist puts his foot in his mouth.
- 15:09Speaker 4: He goes, you know, I don't want to end up
- 15:11Speaker 4: on television.
- 15:11Speaker 1: As in an investigative journalism show, and the car salesman
- 15:16Speaker 1: turns spin doctor. When Kelly first looked at those pictures,
- 15:20Speaker 1: the first thing he said, they look like cop pictures.
- 15:25Speaker 1: This is the moment that a murder for a higher
- 15:28Speaker 1: case almost went sideways. A wealthy doctor looked straight into
- 15:32Speaker 1: the hidden camera filming him as he sets up the
- 15:34Speaker 1: calculated killing of his strange wife. Today, I talked to
- 15:38Speaker 1: the man in the driver's seat. During the deal, the
- 15:41Speaker 1: would be hit man, doctor Ira Bernstein, wanted to permanently
- 15:48Speaker 1: silence his a strange wife, Susan, who he claims is
- 15:51Speaker 1: a greedy nag. I'm with my mom in Florida. So
- 15:55Speaker 1: he and his younger mistress, Kelly Gribella, hire, who they
- 15:58Speaker 1: think is a hitman, mark N's lussant to murder Susan
- 16:02Speaker 1: his credentials. He's a car salesman Kelly had known for years.
- 16:13Speaker 1: To prove Marckenzie is the real deal and not a
- 16:15Speaker 1: police informant, Kelly and the doc first asked the salesman
- 16:19Speaker 1: to rough up two insurance adjusters who had been investigating
- 16:22Speaker 1: Bernstein's pedietry practice for fraud. A few days later, Markeenzie
- 16:35Speaker 1: delivers these chilling photos. When Kelly first looked at those pictures,
- 16:39Speaker 1: the first thing she said was the these look like
- 16:41Speaker 1: cop pictures.
- 16:42Speaker 10: Why did she go through with that?
- 16:43Speaker 1: The emotions were outweighing everything else that they were going through.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Here's where the paediatrist and his girlfriend take the bait.
- 16:51Speaker 1: He was satisfied with the meeting that these two insurance investigators.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Received, Yes he was, and they look realistic. The artists
- 16:59Speaker 3: worked worked on that movie FX.
- 17:02Speaker 1: That's right, these pictures are fake.
- 17:07Speaker 4: He took me numerous pictures, hundreds of pictures, and just
- 17:10Speaker 4: so we can get one of each person being beat
- 17:13Speaker 4: up that looked more realistic.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Did he pay the money?
- 17:15Speaker 10: Yeah, the money.
- 17:16Speaker 5: The money was paid.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So who read it out? The foot doctor and his
- 17:19Speaker 1: girlfriend's murder for hire plot? Was Marckenzie a legitimate hitman?
- 17:24Speaker 5: He's not a hit man.
- 17:25Speaker 1: He's a good man, a good man who blew the whistle.
- 17:29Speaker 1: You were the man for the job I predented to me,
- 17:32Speaker 1: Marckenzie tells me. Killy came into the luxury car dealership
- 17:36Speaker 1: and asked if he knew anyone who could kill her
- 17:39Speaker 1: boyfriend's won.
- 17:40Speaker 10: She was very clear about She was very clear and
- 17:42Speaker 10: about it. What made you go to police? When I
- 17:46Speaker 10: look at her official expression and I know.
- 17:48Speaker 5: She was serious.
- 17:49Speaker 2: He was the fourth person that they had contacted to
- 17:53Speaker 2: kill Susan Bernstein and he's the only one that went to.
- 17:56Speaker 10: The police, the only one, only one they.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Were going to keep hunting until how somebody who was
- 18:01Speaker 2: going to do it.
- 18:02Speaker 1: The Ramopop police asked the car salesman to close the
- 18:05Speaker 1: biggest deal of his life, getting both Kelly and Ira
- 18:08Speaker 1: to map out their murder for hire plot on camera.
- 18:12Speaker 10: This is all they did. Did you ever think your
- 18:15Speaker 10: life was in danger?
- 18:17Speaker 1: Yes, especially at this moment. At one point the doctor
- 18:23Speaker 1: actually sees the hidden camera. Yes, Markeenzie reassures the doctor
- 18:27Speaker 1: and Kelly he's simply a salesman with a tricked out car.
- 18:31Speaker 5: It was a very shot, he points right out. He goes,
- 18:33Speaker 5: what is that?
- 18:34Speaker 10: And what does Markenzi say?
- 18:35Speaker 4: He says, well, that's what my kids they plug into
- 18:39Speaker 4: and for their headsets.
- 18:40Speaker 5: So the doctor kept looking at it.
- 18:42Speaker 4: He stared back, and he says, I don't want to
- 18:44Speaker 4: end up on television.
- 18:45Speaker 10: I don't want to end up on television.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 1: As in an investigative journalism show, that camera Doctor Bernstein
- 18:52Speaker 1: discovered in Markenzi's back seat was actually set by the
- 18:57Speaker 1: cops to catch the deal of death on tape.
- 19:01Speaker 6: You watch your heion.
- 19:04Speaker 1: In me and it didn't take Kelly long.
- 19:09Speaker 6: What the pot? You understand?
- 19:11Speaker 4: Well, what the.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Post? Let me get your experience.
- 19:19Speaker 1: The recordings gave the Ramapo police all the evidence they
- 19:22Speaker 1: needed to arrest Kelly for conspiracy to murder IRA's wife,
- 19:26Speaker 1: But cops it tight until they've got enough to nail
- 19:29Speaker 1: the doctor too.
- 19:30Speaker 4: At one point, she even says, like, you know, when
- 19:32Speaker 4: this is over, you know, we're at a party like
- 19:34Speaker 4: no other.
- 19:39Speaker 1: But the foot Doctor had wisely tiptoed around Markeenzi. He
- 19:43Speaker 1: never verbally gives the final go ahead.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Up until that moment. It was Kelly Gribblelouk who was
- 19:50Speaker 2: the mouthpiece for the conspiracy on IRA's behalf. We did
- 19:53Speaker 2: have prior to that, her meeting with him and video
- 19:57Speaker 2: and photographs of that, but it wasn't enough to actually charge.
- 20:01Speaker 1: So when Marckenzie shows the doc the pictures of the
- 20:03Speaker 1: two busted up insurance adjusters, police ask him to set
- 20:07Speaker 1: the final trap.
- 20:09Speaker 8: You wanted somebody to be okay.
- 20:14Speaker 4: At Markenzie says, listen, I need to know. We need
- 20:17Speaker 4: to have some sort of conclusion here. You either I'm
- 20:20Speaker 4: out or you know, but it's your decision. Has to
- 20:23Speaker 4: be your decision.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Cops say, that's when the good Doctor shoots himself in
- 20:27Speaker 1: the foot.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And he makes me say. He says, if it comes
- 20:31Speaker 5: from Kelly, it came from me.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Detectives tell me Kelly showed up a few days later
- 20:37Speaker 1: simply type the word yes into her phone. How important
- 20:41Speaker 1: was that to your case.
- 20:42Speaker 5: It was very important.
- 20:43Speaker 3: There was a few critical moments and that was one
- 20:45Speaker 3: of them.
- 20:46Speaker 10: So he wanted you to kill his wife's sision.
- 20:49Speaker 1: With that, the detective swoop in and nab the doctor
- 20:52Speaker 1: and his mistress, interrogating both at the same time in
- 20:56Speaker 1: separate rooms.
- 20:57Speaker 5: It was a bad thing that you guys were doing.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Really, you're going to be charged with a solicitation to
- 21:03Speaker 4: solicit someone to go kill Susan.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Up next, the brilliant doctor plays dumb through the medicine
- 21:11Speaker 1: and bail's on his mistress. He didn't bail Kelly out.
- 21:15Speaker 10: No, you're willing to take the full thing? Is that?
- 21:18Speaker 1: How much of them?
- 21:22Speaker 12: Now?
- 21:22Speaker 1: To the conclusion of today's story, A deadly plan. Ira Bernstein,
- 21:27Speaker 1: a not so good doctor, and his greedy girlfriend are
- 21:29Speaker 1: in cops, both arrested and accused of trying to hire
- 21:32Speaker 1: a hitman to kill the foot doctor's wife. But who
- 21:36Speaker 1: will go down for the crime. When Kelly gurubulleg typed
- 21:40Speaker 1: these three simple letters y E S into her phone,
- 21:44Speaker 1: cops say it's spelled murder. Do you think she really
- 21:48Speaker 1: wanted to have Susan Bernstein killed?
- 21:50Speaker 10: Absolutely?
- 21:51Speaker 5: Yes, definitely, good question.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Ramapo detectives claim that was a direct message not from
- 21:57Speaker 1: the mistress, but from doctor Ira Bernstein himself ordering the hit.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Do you think he would have really paid one hundred
- 22:04Speaker 1: thousand dollars to have it as soon as be exual
- 22:05Speaker 1: wife killed?
- 22:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he has the money to do so.
- 22:09Speaker 1: It was enough for prosecutors to charge the would be
- 22:12Speaker 1: killer lovebirds with conspiracy to commit murder, but cops still
- 22:16Speaker 1: needed Kelly to cooperate. Fingering the foot doctor as the
- 22:19Speaker 1: real master mind behind the scheme.
- 22:22Speaker 3: We had to be sure that doctor Bernstein was involved.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Fully as well, so cops put together their own elaborate
- 22:29Speaker 1: plan to get Kelly to rat out her lover. When
- 22:32Speaker 1: Kelly was arrested, yes, the police put you in this
- 22:35Speaker 1: holding cell.
- 22:36Speaker 10: Yes, so she could see you.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yes. Remember Kelly has no idea that car salesman she
- 22:42Speaker 1: hired as a hitman, Markenzie Lussant, is really a police informant.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Their plan was to go have a walk past and
- 22:50Speaker 4: see him say, oh my gosh, they have the hit man.
- 22:52Speaker 10: It's over. Did she look at you, yes, And what
- 22:56Speaker 10: was the look on her face?
- 22:57Speaker 3: She basically changed color and believe she had assumement was
- 23:02Speaker 3: saying and she got pet herself.
- 23:04Speaker 5: She wet her pants, yes, literally literally all right.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Here, Kelly and doctor Bernstein are put in separate interrogation rooms,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and now comes the game of good cop, Bad cop.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Kelly's your girlfriend, Kelly, Yeah, she's a nice girl. I'm right,
- 23:22Speaker 5: Christy Jane pretty girl too.
- 23:24Speaker 4: But I think you too, just got caught up in
- 23:26Speaker 4: this big web of whatever was happening and kind of
- 23:28Speaker 4: got out of control.
- 23:29Speaker 5: You have more charges than he's gonna have. It was
- 23:32Speaker 5: a bad thing that you guys were doing, really.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Bad, continually pitting one against the other.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Kelly just gave us everything. She's crumbled.
- 23:43Speaker 3: He's gonna be coming in here and he's gonna tell us, Wow, I.
- 23:47Speaker 11: Can't believe Kelly did this big little picture.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Is what you were going to do to Susan?
- 23:53Speaker 1: Whatever have you?
- 23:55Speaker 5: Never intended it?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Kelly backs up the doctor's story they never intended to
- 24:01Speaker 1: follow through with a hit, but tells detectives the hit
- 24:04Speaker 1: man wouldn't take no for an answer.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Why was he pressuring me so much? He's pressuring me, Well,
- 24:12Speaker 7: that's not the way it went down.
- 24:14Speaker 1: He even threatened to feed them to alligators if they
- 24:17Speaker 1: didn't pay up, fed fed to the alligators. A terrifying
- 24:21Speaker 1: threat for sure, But there are just two major flaws
- 24:24Speaker 1: with that story. First, where are you gonna find alligators
- 24:27Speaker 1: in Ramapo, New York? And the bigger issue, Markenzie wasn't
- 24:32Speaker 1: really a hit.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Man, Markeensie's not even in trouble because there's more to this, Okay,
- 24:38Speaker 3: Marksie's with us.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Still, cops can't get Kelly or Ira to crack my
- 24:45Speaker 1: finish for life.
- 24:46Speaker 4: My finisher life that's going to depend on you right now,
- 24:51Speaker 4: as I can't answer.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Any questions in a lawyer here. After that, the doctor
- 24:55Speaker 1: posts bail. It turns out to be the break cops
- 24:58Speaker 1: are looking for.
- 25:00Speaker 3: They both went to jail for a few days, and
- 25:03Speaker 3: doctor Bernstein bailed himself out and Kelly stayed in prison.
- 25:09Speaker 10: He didn't bail Kelly out.
- 25:10Speaker 1: No detectives tell his mistress her lover is bailing out
- 25:14Speaker 1: on her while she rides behind bars.
- 25:17Speaker 5: He's free.
- 25:18Speaker 4: He can always go back to his big house with
- 25:20Speaker 4: his wife. But you, you're disposable.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Was she bitter that Ira bailed out of jail and
- 25:27Speaker 1: she was left in jail for some period of time?
- 25:30Speaker 1: I believe she was, But after four months of sitting
- 25:33Speaker 1: in a jail cell. The stewing mistress suddenly has a
- 25:36Speaker 1: change of heart.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Your relationship with him's over, it's done. He is separating
- 25:42Speaker 3: herself from you right now. He's putting this alarnge.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Why did she decide to be a cooperating witness for
- 25:48Speaker 1: the prosecution.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Ira Bernstein in her mind left her in jail while
- 25:53Speaker 2: he was out, and I don't think she at that
- 25:57Speaker 2: time felt the need to protect him anymore.
- 26:00Speaker 10: What was the game plan?
- 26:02Speaker 6: Is he a shooter?
- 26:03Speaker 11: No?
- 26:04Speaker 9: What was it?
- 26:08Speaker 1: Gribullock finally flips, confirming it was Bernstein's idea to off
- 26:12Speaker 1: his wife. She just helped execute the plan.
- 26:16Speaker 5: What was the word written in there?
- 26:18Speaker 1: Yes, that's given the go ahead, So the case was closed, right,
- 26:23Speaker 1: Not so fast. The prosecution's key witness is finally let
- 26:27Speaker 1: out of jail, and you'll never believe where she ends up.
- 26:32Speaker 10: They move in together.
- 26:34Speaker 1: That's right, She ran straight back into the arms of
- 26:37Speaker 1: doctor Ira Bernstein.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I believe that night they actually moved in together.
- 26:42Speaker 1: So you, as a prosecutor, have your cooperating witness living with,
- 26:46Speaker 1: dining with, sleeping.
- 26:47Speaker 10: With the target of your investigation. That's true. Even after
- 26:51Speaker 10: she agreed to testify against him. Yes, he never held
- 26:54Speaker 10: that against her.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But sleeping with the enemy left the pediatrist without a
- 26:59Speaker 1: legal leg to stand down. How did this complicate the
- 27:02Speaker 1: prosecution of doctor Burnstein?
- 27:04Speaker 2: While Kelly and Ira are living together, she became less
- 27:09Speaker 2: and less cooperative the closer we got. On the other hand,
- 27:13Speaker 2: it greatly helped the prosecution in this case because it
- 27:16Speaker 2: made it impossible for Ira Bernstein to point the finger
- 27:19Speaker 2: at Kelly Gribbolok.
- 27:21Speaker 1: At trial, Doctor Bernstein decided to plead guilty and received
- 27:25Speaker 1: a five to fifteen year prison sentence. Kelly Gribbola got
- 27:29Speaker 1: four to twelve years in exchange for her testimony. And
- 27:33Speaker 1: how was.
- 27:33Speaker 10: Susan Bernstein doing this investigation?
- 27:36Speaker 5: She didn't know anything about it.
- 27:37Speaker 10: How did you react?
- 27:38Speaker 4: They both told us that. She said, she pause and
- 27:41Speaker 4: then said, I'm not surprised.
- 27:43Speaker 1: What is the surprise? Through it all, Susan and Ira
- 27:46Speaker 1: are still legally married. Are you glad you did what
- 27:49Speaker 1: you did?
- 27:50Speaker 10: I would do it all over again.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Do you think if Kelly had approached a real hitman,
- 27:56Speaker 1: Susan Bernstein would be dead today? Absolutely, no doubt, believe
- 28:03Speaker 1: it or not. Kelly could be eligible for parole as
- 28:06Speaker 1: early as next year, and her attorney tells us that
- 28:08Speaker 1: the doctor and his lover's relationship is stronger now than
- 28:12Speaker 1: when they first got arrested, and they plan to reunite
- 28:14Speaker 1: when they're both free. Up next, did a broken engagement
- 28:20Speaker 1: cause this bride to be to snap?
- 28:22Speaker 12: I hope you're Dad, because, if anything, anyone who deserves
- 28:29Speaker 12: all of this, if you.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Crime watch daily with the chilling and bizarre interrogation after
- 28:37Speaker 1: two bodies are found. God coming up. I've seen a
- 28:46Speaker 1: lot of police interrogation videos in my day, but never
- 28:49Speaker 1: have I seen a murder suspect ask the police for
- 28:52Speaker 1: a bottle of red wine and a pack of cigarettes.
- 28:56Speaker 1: You can probably guess what the answer was. For more
- 28:58Speaker 1: on the story behind that video, we head to the
- 29:00Speaker 1: northeast in the beautiful city of Rattleboro, Vermont. Here's Ana Garcia.
- 29:06Speaker 14: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned? But did
- 29:17Speaker 14: this woman really kill her fiance for calling off their wedding?
- 29:31Speaker 14: A crazy intoxicated interrogation room scene unfoldside of the wall.
- 29:39Speaker 6: Okay, well, how about an under bottle of red wine
- 29:46Speaker 6: and the pack of cigarette?
- 29:49Speaker 14: More liquor was the last thing this love sick woman needed?
- 29:53Speaker 14: Just hours earlier, her fiance and his son were shot dead.
- 30:00Speaker 6: I don't remember they standing over bodies flot blood.
- 30:11Speaker 14: Police learned about the killings when a man calls nine
- 30:14Speaker 14: to one one.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I just all, I'm a coworker who tells me that
- 30:19Speaker 1: she just shot.
- 30:20Speaker 6: And Hill, her boyfriend and her son.
- 30:23Speaker 14: Townsend, Vermont cops find Stephen Lott with twelve gunshot wounds.
- 30:29Speaker 14: His twenty eight year old son Jamis shot three times.
- 30:33Speaker 14: Also at the house, Robin O'Neill.
- 30:36Speaker 6: Hartiz My Jeeves and his little son Shamus. That's dad.
- 30:47Speaker 10: I don't know right now.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Okay, well, I.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Don't have a clumpy.
- 30:54Speaker 14: Investigators hauled Robin in for a questioning session like.
- 30:57Speaker 6: No other where exactly.
- 31:01Speaker 14: Cops realize immediately she's highly intoxicated at times, confused at
- 31:06Speaker 14: other times, seemingly quite aware of the trouble she's in,
- 31:17Speaker 14: this scam, possibly be Robin claims she didn't remember a thing,
- 31:23Speaker 14: but whatever did happen, she knew she wanted to take
- 31:27Speaker 14: it back.
- 31:29Speaker 12: I can get you.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Yes, yesterday, thank you.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Yes, your day would be very good.
- 31:38Speaker 14: If Robin wasn't going back in time, then there was
- 31:42Speaker 14: something else she wanted.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Actually, if you forget me.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Loaded nine millimeter or.
- 31:53Speaker 14: Something, and if she had indeed killed her fiance. Robin
- 31:58Speaker 14: wanted detectives to know why.
- 32:02Speaker 12: It was this morning, on our way to work, he said,
- 32:06Speaker 12: we were.
- 32:08Speaker 6: Get engaged, not getting married.
- 32:12Speaker 14: It was an admission. She quickly regretted.
- 32:14Speaker 6: I'm thinking this is something where I need a public
- 32:17Speaker 6: defender or something, because I've just given you a motive.
- 32:22Speaker 14: Less than a year earlier, Robin had moved from Texas
- 32:25Speaker 14: to Vermont to be with Stephen. Now he was calling
- 32:29Speaker 14: off their engagement. It seemed the more she thought about
- 32:39Speaker 14: her situation, the more angry she became.
- 32:42Speaker 12: I hope you're dead, because if anything, anyone who deserves
- 32:47Speaker 12: me dead, all of this, if.
- 32:51Speaker 14: You cursing one minute, praying the next, Holy Mary Mother,
- 32:59Speaker 14: rob Then Robin told detectives how they could better understand
- 33:04Speaker 14: her story.
- 33:06Speaker 6: My so called diary and my computer could shed a
- 33:12Speaker 6: whole lot of light on this.
- 33:16Speaker 14: Robin's personal diary did shed light on the case. At
- 33:20Speaker 14: her trial three years later, prosecutors used it to document
- 33:25Speaker 14: the demise of her relationship, but it turns out Robin
- 33:29Speaker 14: sobered up big time.
- 33:31Speaker 6: Of course, I need a public defender.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I'm not in what I right now?
- 33:36Speaker 6: So yeah, well I need a public defender, and.
- 33:39Speaker 14: None of her statements made to police that night could
- 33:42Speaker 14: be used in court, a judge ruling detectives ignored Robin's
- 33:48Speaker 14: request for an attorney and questioned her anyway. The only
- 33:52Speaker 14: confession jurors heard about was the one she made to
- 33:55Speaker 14: her friend the night of the murders.
- 33:58Speaker 9: She said, steeves by my feet and full of blood,
- 34:03Speaker 9: but cheerlessen on the table.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Were going to do this work.
- 34:06Speaker 14: An expert for the defense testified that Robin was creating
- 34:10Speaker 14: false memories when she confessed and was testing.
- 34:14Speaker 1: The assertion to see if it fit.
- 34:16Speaker 14: The defense reminded jurors Robin was drunk at the time
- 34:20Speaker 14: and didn't remember killing anyone. They also claimed there was
- 34:25Speaker 14: virtually no forensic or physical evidence against her.
- 34:30Speaker 2: DNA is a powerful new scientific tool for criminal investigations.
- 34:36Speaker 1: What do you think that.
- 34:38Speaker 13: The law enforcement tested.
- 34:40Speaker 5: For Danna in this particular case?
- 34:43Speaker 14: Defense attorney Ian Carlton said there wasn't enough evidence collected
- 34:47Speaker 14: to connect anyone to the murders.
- 34:49Speaker 11: They didn't test drinking glasses.
- 34:51Speaker 6: There was drinking glasses all over the beer camps.
- 34:54Speaker 11: They were lying glasses.
- 34:56Speaker 10: They didn't test cigarette butts.
- 34:58Speaker 1: They didn't as door knockspouss.
- 35:00Speaker 14: Her defense team also argued that if Robin had been
- 35:04Speaker 14: the killer, she would have been covered in blood, but
- 35:08Speaker 14: there was none on her clothes.
- 35:10Speaker 1: They tested the three guys that were out in the kitchen.
- 35:15Speaker 4: They tested the bullets that were found in the kitchen.
- 35:21Speaker 14: That's it, prosecutors told jurors. While they may have doubts
- 35:25Speaker 14: about parts of this case, there are no reasonable doubts.
- 35:30Speaker 14: In the end, the jury agreed, even without seeing her
- 35:34Speaker 14: initial interrogation, well.
- 35:38Speaker 6: How about and under a model of bread, wine and
- 35:43Speaker 6: a pack of.
- 35:44Speaker 14: Cigarette Robin O'Neil was found guilty of aggravated murder, carrying
- 35:49Speaker 14: an automatic sentence of life without parole. Under Vermont state law,
- 35:55Speaker 14: she's entitled to an automatic appeal. Up next, Elizabeth Smart
- 36:04Speaker 14: from Crime Watch Daily.
- 36:05Speaker 1: He's the fertility doctor grilled by our Elizabeth Smart, used
- 36:09Speaker 1: of using his own sperm to impregnate his patients. Thank
- 36:14Speaker 1: you today, there's been a big development in the case.
- 36:17Speaker 1: I'm ecstatic.
- 36:18Speaker 4: I couldn't be any unhappy.
- 36:21Speaker 10: That's next.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Now to a crime Watch Daily update on a story
- 36:27Speaker 1: we covered in Indiana. That's where a fertility doctor confessed
- 36:31Speaker 1: in court documents to using his own sperm with his patients,
- 36:34Speaker 1: not once or twice, but as many as fifty times.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Our Elizabeth Smart is here now with the very latest.
- 36:41Speaker 9: Chris, I can't even imagine the horror finding out that
- 36:45Speaker 9: the man you trusted with something so special as having
- 36:49Speaker 9: a baby was allegedly committing a horrible betrayal behind closed doors.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Dramatic new information breaking in the case of the alleged
- 36:59Speaker 1: for two Frankenstein.
- 37:01Speaker 10: I'm ecstatic.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I couldn't be any more happy. Doctor Donald Klein is
- 37:08Speaker 1: accused of impregnating dozens of patients with his own sperm.
- 37:13Speaker 1: It's a story Crimewatch Dalley has been following closely. Liz
- 37:18Speaker 1: White is one of several moms who is making the
- 37:20Speaker 1: sensational claim that doctor Donald Klein artificially inseminated them with
- 37:25Speaker 1: his own sperm.
- 37:26Speaker 13: He gives me creeps that when he left the room
- 37:29Speaker 13: after the initial coming in and putting on the drape,
- 37:33Speaker 13: that he went out saying he was going to go
- 37:35Speaker 13: get the donor sperm, and then what occurred outside the
- 37:38Speaker 13: room that was disgusting.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Liz tells Our Elizabeth Smart Klein told her medical students
- 37:44Speaker 1: would provide a fresh donation because frozen sperm was not
- 37:48Speaker 1: an option.
- 37:49Speaker 13: I think if you said, well, I'm going to donate
- 37:50Speaker 13: my semen to you, I would have been creeped out.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Nine months later, Liz give birth to a healthy baby
- 37:59Speaker 1: boy she named Matthew.
- 38:00Speaker 5: It was a plussing.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Fast forward fifteen years later.
- 38:05Speaker 11: We were in science class learning about what my blood type
- 38:08Speaker 11: was based upon my parents, and so when I brought
- 38:12Speaker 11: that topic cup to ask them what their blood types are,
- 38:16Speaker 11: that's when they told me.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Matt says he did his own DNA test. He sent
- 38:22Speaker 1: it to the online testing site twenty three in me
- 38:25Speaker 1: dot com, so named for the twenty three chromosomes in
- 38:28Speaker 1: a human cell.
- 38:29Speaker 9: Do you remember how many siblings it said you have
- 38:32Speaker 9: or half siblings?
- 38:33Speaker 11: I think the total confirmed unconfirmed account is thirteen right now.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Jacoba Ballard says she's one of Matt's half sisters. Like Matt,
- 38:45Speaker 1: Jacoba did her own DNA salava test.
- 38:48Speaker 10: The first set proved that there were I had seven siblings.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Julie Maynes, another of doctor Klein's alleged daughters, did her
- 38:57Speaker 1: own DNA test and says the results show o Jacoba
- 39:01Speaker 1: is her half sister.
- 39:02Speaker 10: It was very mind blowing and shocking, to say the least.
