- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Monday the 12th of
- 0:16January. Welcome to the new week.
- 0:18Great to have your company. I am back to work this week, how
- 0:22about you? Maybe you are still on holidays.
- 0:25Wouldn't that be wonderful for you if you are heading back to
- 0:28work with me? Let's do it together.
- 0:30This is a different kind of a work week for me.
- 0:33I'm working from home, doing a bit of project work, so boy does
- 0:36that mean I can work in my P's. Is that what working from home
- 0:40means? Or maybe just unlimited cups of
- 0:42tea? We shall find this week as that
- 0:45all unfolds. But no matter what I'm wearing
- 0:48or doing or drinking, we are doing one thing and that's for
- 0:51sure. Which is continuing in our
- 0:53journey through the book of Luke.
- 0:55Following along as Luke describes Jesus life and his
- 0:59ministry as he has meticulously read the first hand accounts and
- 1:05processed it all together, done his research and provided for us
- 1:10this beautifully organised, logical explanation of Jesus
- 1:14life and ministry. So why don't you and I, friends,
- 1:17get our travelling shoes on and head back to those days, to
- 1:22those streets, to those crowds, to those fields, to those
- 1:27arguments, to those teaching moments and hear what our Lord
- 1:31and Saviour has to say to us today, in our moment as we read
- 1:35together Luke Chapter 11. Once Jesus was in a certain
- 1:49place praying, as he finished, one of his disciples came to him
- 1:53and said, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his
- 1:57disciples. Jesus said, this is how you
- 2:01should pray, Father, may your name be kept holy, may your
- 2:06Kingdom come soon. Give us each day the food we
- 2:10need, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against
- 2:15us, and don't let us yield to temptation.
- 2:20Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this story.
- 2:23Suppose you went to a friend's house at midnight wanting to
- 2:27borrow 3 loaves of bread. You say to him, a friend of mine
- 2:30has just arrived for a visit and I have nothing for him to eat.
- 2:34And suppose he calls out from his bedroom.
- 2:37Don't bother me, the door is locked for the night and my
- 2:40family and I are all in bed. I can't help you, but I tell you
- 2:45this though he won't do it for friendship's sake.
- 2:48If you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give
- 2:52you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence.
- 2:56And so I tell you, keep on asking and you will receive what
- 3:00you ask for. Keep on seeking and you will
- 3:03find. Keep on knocking and the door
- 3:06will be opened to you, for everyone who asks receives.
- 3:11Everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks, the door
- 3:16will be opened. You fathers, if your children
- 3:20ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead?
- 3:24Or if they ask for an egg to give them a scorpion?
- 3:27Of course not. So if you sinful people know how
- 3:31to give good gifts to your children, how much more will
- 3:34your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask
- 3:38him? One day Jesus cast out a demon
- 3:42from a man who couldn't speak. And when the demon was gone, the
- 3:46man began to speak. The crowds were amazed, but some
- 3:50of them said no wonder he can cast out demons.
- 3:53He gets his power from Satan, the Prince of demons.
- 3:57Others trying to test Jesus demanded that he show them a
- 4:01miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.
- 4:05He knew their hearts, so he said Any Kingdom divided by civil war
- 4:10is doomed. A family splintered by feuding
- 4:14will fall apart. You say I am empowered by Satan.
- 4:18But if Satan is divided and fighting against himself, how
- 4:22can his Kingdom survive? And if I am empowered by Satan,
- 4:27what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons too, so
- 4:31they will condemn you for what you have said.
- 4:34But if I'm casting out demons by the power of God, then the
- 4:38Kingdom of God has arrived among you.
- 4:41For when a strong man is fully armed and guards his palace, his
- 4:45possessions are safe until someone even stronger attacks
- 4:49and overpowers him, strips him of his weapons, and carries off
- 4:53his belongings. Anyone who isn't with me opposes
- 4:58me, and anyone who isn't working with me is actually working
- 5:02against me. When an evil spirit leaves a
- 5:05person, it goes into the desert searching for rest.
- 5:09But when it finds none, it says I'll return to the person I came
- 5:13from. So it returns and finds that
- 5:16it's former home is all swept and in order.
- 5:19Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than
- 5:23itself, and they all enter the person and live there.
- 5:27And so that person is worse off than before.
- 5:31As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out.
- 5:34God bless your mother, the womb from which you came, and the
- 5:38breasts that nurtured you, Jesus replied.
- 5:42But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put
- 5:46it into practise. As the crowd pressed in on
- 5:51Jesus, he said, This evil generation keeps asking me to
- 5:55show them a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them
- 5:59is the sign of Jonah. What happened to him was a sign
- 6:03to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him.
- 6:06What happens to the Son of Man will be assigned to these people
- 6:10that he was sent by God. The queen of Sheba will stand up
- 6:14against this generation on Judgement Day and condemn it.
- 6:18For she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon.
- 6:22Now someone greater than Solomon is here, but you refuse to
- 6:27listen. The people of Nineveh will also
- 6:30stand up against this generation on Judgement Day and condemn it,
- 6:34for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah.
- 6:38Now someone greater than Jonah is here, but you refuse to
- 6:43repent. No one lights a lamp and then
- 6:48hides it or puts it under a basket.
- 6:50Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand where it's light can be
- 6:54seen by all who enter the house. Your eye is like a lamp that
- 6:59provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your
- 7:03whole body is filled with light, but when it is unhealthy, your
- 7:07body is filled with darkness. Make sure that the light you
- 7:11think you have is not actually darkness.
- 7:15If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your
- 7:19whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling
- 7:23you with light. As Jesus was speaking, one of
- 7:27the Pharisees invited him home for a meal.
- 7:30So he went in and took his place at the table.
- 7:33His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first
- 7:37performing the hand washing ceremony required by Jewish
- 7:40custom. Then the Lord said to him, You
- 7:44Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and
- 7:48the dish, but inside you are filthy, full of greed and
- 7:53wickedness. Fools, didn't God make the
- 7:56inside as well as the outside? So clean the inside by giving
- 8:00gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.
- 8:05What sorrow awaits you, Pharisees?
- 8:08For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from
- 8:11your herb gardens. But you ignored justice and the
- 8:15love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do
- 8:19not neglect the more important things.
- 8:23What sorrow awaits you, Pharisees, for you love to sit
- 8:27in the seats of honour in the synagogues and receive
- 8:30respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces?
- 8:33Yes. What sorrow awaits you, for you
- 8:36are like hidden graves in a field.
- 8:39People walk over them without knowing the corruption they are
- 8:42stepping on, Teacher said an expert in religious law.
- 8:46You have insulted us too, in what you just said.
- 8:50Yes, Jesus said what sorrow also awaits you, experts in religious
- 8:55law, For you crush people with unbearable religious demands and
- 9:00you never lift a finger to ease the burden.
- 9:02What sorrow awaits you For you build monuments for the prophets
- 9:07your own ancestors killed long ago.
- 9:10But in fact you stand as witnesses who agree with what
- 9:13your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and
- 9:17you join in their crime by building the monuments.
- 9:21This is what God in His wisdom said about you.
- 9:24I will send prophets and apostles to them, but they will
- 9:28kill some and persecute the others.
- 9:32As a result, this generation will be held responsible for the
- 9:35murder of all God's prophets from the creation of the world,
- 9:39from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah, who was
- 9:43killed between the altar and the sanctuary.
- 9:46Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation.
- 9:50What sorrow awaits you, experts in religious law?
- 9:54For you remove the key to knowledge from the people.
- 9:58You don't enter the Kingdom yourselves, and you prevent
- 10:00others from entering. As Jesus was leaving, the
- 10:04teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and
- 10:08tried to provoke him with many questions.
- 10:10They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use
- 10:13against him. Our Jesus, we hear so clearly
- 10:26your disdain for hypocrisy. You do not want someone with
- 10:32shadows in their heart to be spruiking their own perfection.
- 10:35But instead, we read here that you want us with humility, with
- 10:41light inside of us, coming back again and again and again to you
- 10:47in conversation, in prayer, asking for everything that we
- 10:51would need from you. So Jesus, I pray that you
- 10:56reclaim our hearts today, our hearts that are so easily
- 11:00corrupted by our lives and the noise around us, so that our
- 11:06hearts can be drawn ever nearer to you, and our hearts can love
- 11:11like you, and our hearts can break for the things that break
- 11:16yours. And our hearts can be more like
- 11:19you, attuned to your Kingdom priorities.
- 11:24So today we put aside our own desires and we come empty handed
- 11:29on our knees before you. We love you, and we want our
- 11:34lives to be entirely in worship of you, a wonderful, saving God.
- 11:41We pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
