- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:13episodes three seventy seven, three seventy eight, and three seventy nine. The
- 0:20pain of My crewmates is My pain, Zoro's desperate fight, a Promise from
- 0:27a Distant Day, The Pirates Song, and a Small Whale, and Brooks
- 0:34passed a sad farewell with his cheerful comrade. In these episodes, y'all,
- 0:45I did not like this one bit, not even a little. I really,
- 0:58oh, my current state of mind was not ideal for an animal abandonment
- 1:07centric storyline. Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I
- 1:34am Natasha. Thank you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this
- 1:38episode. Everybody is here in the chat. Hi, y'all delighted to have
- 1:42you. Also, I hate you and get out you, guys. I'm
- 1:51not going to stunt on any of you. I know that A lot of
- 1:53the time when I'm getting, like get emotional about an episode, y'all want
- 1:57to know, right, I cried like a little baby. I sobbed and
- 2:12clung to Sam who was sitting next to me through the last of these three
- 2:16episodes, and truly I believe that we're gonna like have a happy ending here.
- 2:28But oh my god, you guys, look, here's the thing with
- 2:35me. Even animal death is less difficult for me. It's the suffering that's
- 2:46the part that I can't fucking stomach. And the aspect of it where an
- 2:53animal is unable to quite understand why you have to do what you're doing.
- 3:01It's like, you know, like the fucking episode of Futurama where Fry's dog
- 3:07is waiting for him, which I think we can all agree is one of
- 3:12the most traumatic episodes of any television show ever aired. Like it's still brought
- 3:19up whenever anybody's like, what's the saddest show episode you've ever seen? That's
- 3:24usually like the top of the list that people will post and get the most
- 3:29likes and retweets or comments or whatever. So and it's the combo of like
- 3:36an animal that doesn't understand fully what's happening. I will say that at least
- 3:42La Boon has like more comprehension. It's not the same, you know,
- 3:46but it just brought that up for me. You know, I have Sam
- 3:52and he had to get fixed, and then he got the infection and I
- 3:57had to like wash his wound out and do things that hurt him in the
- 4:00short run to ensure that he didn't like sustained harm in the long run.
- 4:09And it was so difficult for me to make myself do it, you guys.
- 4:15Like at one point when he was first like the infection had first set
- 4:19in, his leg was really swollen and it was like in his sort of
- 4:25like underbelly as well, and so swollen that you touched it at all,
- 4:30and he yelped and we had to figure out how to lift him into the
- 4:33car. And I tried to lift him and he yelped, and I literally
- 4:41put him down and turned around and started to like almost throw up because it
- 4:47just hurt my heart so bad. And Owen had to come around and like
- 4:53pick him up. And I just keep thinking about I'm gonna have to give
- 4:58him away, and I know it's for the best. I'm sorry, you
- 5:05guys. I knew this is gonna happen, But I really grow to love
- 5:15him, And if it weren't for what's going on with him and his brother
- 5:20and them not getting along, I would definitely like want to keep him,
- 5:25even though he's a nightmare in some ways. And I am going to have
- 5:30to give him away and leave him with somebody else and like drive away,
- 5:41and they genuinely don't know how I'm gonna do it. Like it was tough
- 5:46to say goodbye to the other puppies, and I didn't get to know them
- 5:50the same way. You know, they were sweethearts, but there were so
- 5:56many of them at that at that point, they were all still out side,
- 6:00and I wasn't spending a ton of time with them. And Sam,
- 6:03we've trained him to be an inside and outside dog now, so he's with
- 6:09me constantly, and I know it will be what's best for him if I'm
- 6:17able to find somebody, But oh, it's gonna rip my heart out,
- 6:21you guys. It is going to fucking kill me. And I think it's
- 6:28just also been at the forefront of my mind because I'm not sure what the
- 6:32fuck is going on. I think it's there's a combination of things happening.
- 6:38First of all, I think a lot of people got pets during the pandemic
- 6:44and they didn't fully understand what it was going to take for them to continue
- 6:48to care for this animal once they were no longer working from home all the
- 6:53time. So there has been a huge influx here he is, he knows
- 6:59I'm talking about it. A huge influx of dogs being surrendered because of the
- 7:04fact that they their owners are either unwilling or unable to care for them anymore.
- 7:11I think that some people were under the impression they would get to work
- 7:14from home forever, and their companies just screwed them. So all these shelters
- 7:20are like overflowing. And on top of that, I've had several friends recently
- 7:29lose their dogs like kind of suddenly, and a cat as well. Those
- 7:34of you who know Jamie from the show her like sweet Cat passed away.
- 7:40And I had no less than five friends over the past month lose dogs and
- 7:48like they were not sick. It was a very sudden thing. So I
- 7:55think that I'm just sort of like surrounded by a lot of of sad stories
- 8:01with animals in addition to what I'm dealing with with my own. And He's
- 8:09looking at me, Hey, baby, who as you are? You're the
- 8:15best one. Don't tell Pip And I said that he's so good you guys.
- 8:22Um. So anyway, this was brutal. It just really really got
- 8:30to me. And I appreciate Brooke so much more because he is truly like
- 8:37fucked up in a way that the other pirates don't really seem to be.
- 8:43His captain is like sympathetic, and the other pirates definitely care about Laboon.
- 8:46It's not like they don't give a shit. But it's very clear to me
- 8:52that Brooke and Laboon have like a particular relationship, and Brooke is a real
- 8:56softy um in regard to I don't know if it's animals in general, but
- 9:03definitely Laboon at least, so it's particularly difficult for him, and that is
- 9:09just also how I am. There is just something about the fact that they
- 9:16don't understand and that sometimes they have to go through suffering and just trust you,
- 9:26you know. And that's what gets to me a lot about like caring
- 9:28for Sam, is that I have to do these things that hurt him,
- 9:31and I know they hurt him, but he like, after I do this
- 9:35thing that hurts him, he will still climb into my lap and want cuddles
- 9:39and love me, even though I inflicted that on him. And I feel
- 9:43like he should be mad and just be like, well, I'm not coming
- 9:46near you now, because he trusts me that much and understands somehow that I
- 9:52do just want to care for him, and you guys, I just was
- 9:56not ready. So I'm going to back up and we have to talk about
- 10:00Zoro first. But I just needed to talk about this right out of the
- 10:03gate because it is obviously, as you can hear, soft spot for me
- 10:11at the moment. So yeah, well let's talk about Zoro first, because
- 10:16this is a weird thing. I'm not entirely sure that I get what happened
- 10:22here, So we start off. I should mention that we have a new
- 10:26theme song, and it's not actually new, it's just a new version of
- 10:31the last theme song. I'm not, you know, I'm not a musical
- 10:37expert, so I can't tell you what changes were made, but it sounds
- 10:39like it's faster paced or made a little bit more techno sounding. I'm not
- 10:43sure, but the beginning of this episode is like a really long slow mo
- 10:54replay of the end of the last one, where we're reestablishing everything with Kuma
- 10:58having this like, you know, bomb basically, And I was genuinely surprised
- 11:07because I said I was watching the scream when I said this last episode that
- 11:13the bomb goes off and it looks like the island literally disappears, off the
- 11:18map, like it seems like it's straight up gone, and we have like
- 11:24trees that go flying and buildings that crack, and it's like, I mean,
- 11:30it's serious. And then we come back and it's not remotely as bad
- 11:39as it looks. It's like this very impressive, long drawn out explosion,
- 11:48and then it's sort of like while the building's closest to them are rubble,
- 11:52but most of the rest of the island seems to be like completely a fine
- 11:58honestly, so I was a little disappointed. I'm gonna be straight with y'all.
- 12:03This seemed like a cop out. I was hoping that we would at
- 12:07least be like in the floating rubble of the ship slash island, and we
- 12:15were going to have to figure things out from there. I didn't expect for
- 12:18almost everything to be like completely intact before, like after this explosion that was
- 12:26made so much of and Kuma is like just looking around surveying everything, and
- 12:35we get shots of all of these people who are laid out in such a
- 12:41way that they look like they're dead. They're not. This massive explosion that
- 12:48he says is going to kill everybody because those are his orders, doesn't even
- 12:54kill one single solitary person as far as I can see. I'm mean,
- 13:01you know, like I'm nobody. I don't feel like there's any casual season.
- 13:07You guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anybody
- 13:11dies, which that's pretty lame. I'm fine with Armine characters not dying at
- 13:18this point. I'm even fine with some of our main side characters not dying.
- 13:24I would like some Red Shirts mixed in, though I wouldn't mind like
- 13:28there being any indication that his power is something to truly fear, because at
- 13:33this point it just feels like a lot of nothing. It feels like I'm
- 13:39gonna intimidate everybody and make all of these big promises, but in the end,
- 13:46it's like I'm just popping a large balloon in your face. It's annoying,
- 13:52but it doesn't actually have an effect. So yeah, I was just
- 13:56like bewildered to this long pan over everybody who is like evidently at this moment
- 14:05dead and their eyes are whited out, which is often like either they're dead
- 14:09or they're just unconscious. It's really kind of up to the viewer how to
- 14:15interpret it. Sometimes this affected me at first because I thought they were really
- 14:22gone, you know. It seemed like the way that it's done is the
- 14:26whited out eyes are people who are dead, and then you go to the
- 14:31one piece crews and all of the straw hats eyes are closed. So that
- 14:37was how I was taking it. Was like everybody else is dead, but
- 14:41the one piece crew or you guys in the one piece crew, my bad.
- 14:45The straw Hat crew are just knocked out, but not dead. So
- 14:52he Kuma goes over to Lufy and is like staring down at his body and
- 15:03like figuring out how to take him out of here. He lifts him up
- 15:09by his front of his like vest, which I don't know why that was
- 15:15such a weird choice to me. But as he's lifting him up, who
- 15:18should show up but Zoro, who puts a big old slash in Kuma's shoulder.
- 15:24And this is unexpected. It turns out, first of all, Kuma
- 15:31has to be like ready for an attack, it turns out, in order
- 15:35to deflect it. So it's not like you like it's an automatic thing that
- 15:41happens. When Zoro gets the drop on him, it cuts him pretty good.
- 15:48But the problem is he's a robot, cyborg whatever it's wild, you
- 15:56guys. The shoulder that's showing has like a dial on it, you know,
- 16:02and a bunch of chords that are coming out. And I was sort
- 16:06of thinking that maybe he was it was just his arm or something, I
- 16:11don't know, But then his one eye begins to blink red in a very
- 16:18Terminator esque sort of way, and he opens his mouth and there's this like
- 16:25a beam of light that gathers in his mouth. It's very dramatic, and
- 16:30actually I thought pretty cool looking. And he's sucking the light in and Zoro's
- 16:36watching him and just sort of like standing there prepping before he shoots it at
- 16:41Zoro, and he causes like a pretty good sized blast. It doesn't hit
- 16:47Zoro is able to dodge it, but like that's freaky, you know,
- 16:52And there's all this like smoke pouring out of his mouth when he closes his
- 16:56mouth. The look of it is it's intimidating. I'll say that, but
- 17:04I'm just going to read a comment here. Gus says, I think it
- 17:08was intended to knock them all out so that he could take Lufy and spare
- 17:11their lives like he said he would. I mean, he said that he
- 17:15would spare their lives if they handed Loofy over and if not, he was
- 17:19under orders to kill them all and he wouldn't use the thing, and he
- 17:25said, then this was your choice, as he supposedly lets the bomb go
- 17:30off to kill everybody because they didn't handle Lufy over the way that they said.
- 17:37So I don't know if it's supposed to be that he actually has a
- 17:42soft spot and didn't kill them all because of because he just felt like it
- 17:51was the wrong thing to do. But it's a weird thing to like threaten
- 17:56them all as if they're going to kill them with a certain weapon and then
- 18:00that weapon doesn't come close to killing them all. I just feel like it's,
- 18:07you know what I'm saying, It's just a weird That's not clear to
- 18:11me that he was intending to just knock them out from the beginning, because
- 18:15that's not what he said. The whole thing was predicated on them handing Lufy
- 18:21over voluntarily, which they didn't do. So I'm column bullshit. It just
- 18:26seems like we wanted this big dramatic moment, but we didn't want to actually
- 18:30like pay anything for it. So again, Zoro gets like thrown off and
- 18:37Kuma is able to heal almost instantly the like wound in his shoulder, which
- 18:41I thought was sort of interesting. It's not just his flesh that heals either,
- 18:47it's like the clothing as well. And when Zoro looks over, I
- 18:52think it's like one of his swords that's in the ground. No, it's
- 18:53a steel bar. It's melted. That's how hot this beam was that he
- 18:57shot out. So it sort of like folds over and Zoro is in pretty
- 19:06bad shape here, it's pretty rough. So he says that I know I'm
- 19:15not worth as much Aslofy. My bounty is not as high, but I
- 19:25could really make y'all's lives pretty miserable. And I think that you should take
- 19:30me seriously and consider that my head would be a decent enough replacement for Loofy.
- 19:41Like I can't give him up. I just can't, Like that's not
- 19:45honorable. But if you were going to have some honor yourself, you could
- 19:51at least like fight me for it. So there's also a moment where he
- 19:57says something that he is a Pasa fista, a creation that is an in
- 20:03development human weapon project, so like a terminator is sort of what I'm thinking
- 20:10of, and he has a sense of honor himself. When Zoro is like
- 20:21telling him, I can't do this, like it's against my code, he
- 20:26seems to understand what he means and sort of respect that. We also hear
- 20:33that this is like a creation again from doctor Vega Punk, who we've definitely
- 20:37heard of before. I don't remember what he's done, but this is a
- 20:41familiar name. It's a good name. I won't lie, And Zoro,
- 20:48for his part, is just like, you know, I'm not gonna lie.
- 20:51It feels pretty unfair that you've got like these serious upgrades in your body,
- 20:57but you've also got devil fruit powers, Like that's just an deeply unfair
- 21:03advantage. He's not wrong, so he says he offers himself, and Kuma
- 21:17is like not completely averse to this. He looks like he is considering it.
- 21:22And while Zoro is waiting for him to come to a decision on it,
- 21:27who should show up but Sanji, who has decided that he also is
- 21:33going to martyr himself. And it's interesting to me the way that Zoro reacts,
- 21:41because so Sanji when he turns up, one of his pant legs is
- 21:47missing, one of his jacket sleeves is missing, and there looks to be
- 21:52almost like a whole bitten out of his tie. And he tells Zoro not
- 21:59to show him up and puts himself between Zoro and Kuma, and he's like,
- 22:07all right, if you're gonna take ahead, take mine now. I
- 22:11said that Zoro was in pretty bad shape, and he is, but demonstrably,
- 22:18Sanji is in worse shape than Zoro. He's walking all weird, like
- 22:23he's drunk. You know, there's a real sort of weaving quality. When
- 22:29he's standing in front of Kuma, he's like trembling violently, and it doesn't
- 22:33seem like it's fear. It seems like just trying to hold himself upright.
- 22:38Is this like intense effort? And Zoro, for his part, I sort
- 22:45of wondered if he was going to be like, well, then let's do
- 22:49this together, bro, And I should have known that. Of course he
- 22:52wasn't gonna be like that. I just thought, in this these extenuating circumstances
- 22:56that maybe they would have learned to work together for like a second, But
- 23:00no, apparently not. Sanji makes this whole like, you know, dramatic.
- 23:08Just tell the others that I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say
- 23:12goodbye kind of moment. And then he gets kicked aside by Zoro, who
- 23:22just puts him down so hard is just like you idiot, and he gets
- 23:32knocked out completely. This time, he is really just down for the count.
- 23:37When Zoro like grabs him. Sanji clings for a moment as if he's
- 23:45going to try and prove that he can still stay upright, But that was
- 23:48all it took, and he finally slides down and hits the floor, and
- 23:52it's very clear he was not going to be up for shit. So this
- 23:59is when Kuma is like, all right, well, if you want me
- 24:02to, he says, I won't take straw Hat's head, but if you're
- 24:07intent on taking his place, you are going to experience a living hell.
- 24:17And this is a weird moment. He puts his hand with his little paw
- 24:22against Lufy's chest and pushes out a giant red bubble behind Lufy that he explains
- 24:34is his pain and exhaustion that Lufy has experienced that has essentially been separated from
- 24:41Lufy. So when we see Lufy later, he feels totally fine, like
- 24:48he's in great shape because this has removed all of the pain and suffering from
- 24:56him, and that feels like something that you don't want to do with a
- 25:03guy who's like the main target of the world government is like bring him back
- 25:10to prime fighting shape. I was just like, why would you do this?
- 25:17I don't It's just it's just such a stupid move. I don't know.
- 25:22I guess Koma is meant to be dumb. I don't know. So
- 25:26he tells Zoro that you have to inflict this pain and agony on yourself,
- 25:33and as close to death as you are, it's not only going to kill
- 25:37you, it's going to be slow and painful. And he pushes it toward
- 25:44him, this like bubble, which I thought was going to completely encircle Zoro,
- 25:49Like it's so big. At first I thought that he was going to
- 25:52go inside it and it would be a sort of prison. Instead, it
- 25:56turns into around the size of maybe like a tennis ball, and floats towards
- 26:03his chest and like goes into his chest from there, and then he begins
- 26:08to completely rack with pain and he falls to the ground and Kuma is standing
- 26:17over him and saying, are you still sure you want to do this?
- 26:23So Zoro says, just let me pick the location, and we go over
- 26:30to this spot that's by the woods, and the big bubble is there again.
- 26:37And I wasn't entirely sure about what was happening here, Like did that?
- 26:44I think what it's supposed to be is that the initial contact with it
- 26:48incapacitated him so badly that Kuma took it out from his chest and then put
- 26:56it like somewhere else for him, or maybe that it was just a very
- 27:02small ball because it was only a fraction of it and this was like the
- 27:08full sized one. But yeah, so he puts this like at some corner
- 27:15of the island and Kuma next thing that we see is him like looking out
- 27:22on the ocean and saying, this kid has inspired such loyalty that he couldn't
- 27:34be anybody's son, but yours, could he dragon. So evidently I am
- 27:42led to understand that Kuma, who is supposed to be very intimidating, shows
- 27:52up to this island with the orders to kill literally everybody there, and not
- 27:57only does he not kill anybody, he also restores Lufy to prime fighting shape
- 28:07before he goes. This guy is an op, right, Like that's this
- 28:14is not a man who is loyal to the government. This isn't it.
- 28:18If I'm not believing that, then I have to believe it's extreme and utter
- 28:23incompetence, And I just don't get the vibe from him that that's what it
- 28:29is. I really do think that he has to be sort of rooting for
- 28:36Lufy because of this comment that he says about Dragon as well. I'm like,
- 28:41all right, so, either he's only commenting on the fact that he
- 28:45has met other associates of Dragons who are also super loyal, so this is
- 28:51like the kind of attitude that he has seen before, or he's making a
- 28:56more personal comment and kind of being like, I get how like how they
- 29:03feel because I am also super loyal to you. And I don't know if
- 29:10that's reaching, but it felt like it didn't feel like it was just a
- 29:15comment on I've seen this before. It felt personal to me. And the
- 29:21fact that he apparently like had some honor, at least according to Zoro,
- 29:26with the fact that he was willing to take Zoro's not his offer because he
- 29:33doesn't like take his head or anything, but you know, he respected the
- 29:37fact that Zoro absolutely would not be handing Moofy over and seemed to appreciate that.
- 29:45So all I can say is that either Kuma is somebody who is like
- 29:53low key on our side, or he is so bad at his job that
- 30:00he is not threatening at all, and I just can't take him seriously.
- 30:07It's just, you know, that's a problem with a show where nobody can
- 30:11die, but like the bad guy can do things that you're supposed to believe
- 30:18could kill people. That's the nice thing about the way that Maria was set
- 30:22up is that his ability was about taking people's shadows, which doesn't inherently kill
- 30:29them, and actually only really works if they aren't dead, because then he
- 30:33loses the shadow entirely. So you've built in a really nice like way for
- 30:38this to work within the confines of the universe that you want to build where
- 30:45nobody's ever really in danger of death, and yet he's still very scary.
- 30:49You know. He's like kind of taking away people's free will and making like
- 30:56these bizarre copies and relegating them to life in this ship. That's like,
- 31:00that's freaky, and none of that involves killing them. But Kuma's power.
- 31:07The only thing that's particularly intimidating to me is the way that he can like
- 31:12redirect attacks and otherwise I don't see it for him, so let's see.
- 31:25Gus says, I'm not sure either, just headcannon. I think. He
- 31:26just pulls his torn jacket up. No healing. Oh okay, it looked
- 31:30like it just like fixed itself. But he pushes a tiny piece at the
- 31:33big bubbles. Zora, okay, gotcha, and Florian says, well,
- 31:37I guess we have to wait and see what the deal is with Kuma.
- 31:40Twirls mustache, enjoy your thoughts. So yeah, he leaves the island and
- 31:52I we We then slow pan to the rest of the crew here, who
- 31:59are all waking up, and it's everybody on the island that seems fine.
- 32:05Lufy himself is like dancing in place and talking about how amazing he feels.
- 32:10It's so weird because he's got bandages on him and he didn't have, like
- 32:17if he's feeling okay, I don't remember these bandages being on him from earlier,
- 32:22but maybe they weren't. I just didn't notice. But anyway, Sanji
- 32:25wakes up here and he's the only one who had been conscious before other than
- 32:30Zoro, and he's like, where the fuck did Zoro go? And I'm
- 32:34pretty sure in his mind it was gonna be Zoro's dead and I am gonna
- 32:39I'm not gonna find him anywhere. But instead he finds an incredibly fucked up
- 32:49Zoro off to the side, like by the tree line, and Zoro's kneeling
- 32:55I think in place. No, he's standing, but he is in this
- 33:00big bloody patch of stone and absolutely dripping with blood. I mean it's everywhere.
- 33:13His shirt has been totally shredded. It's pretty bad. And Sangi says,
- 33:22what the hell happened here, to which Zoro says, what happened here?
- 33:30Nothing at all. And I'm gonna give some credit here to the voice
- 33:35actor because the way he delivers that line is so convincing that he's like in
- 33:42horrible pain and is just doing his best to bear it for the moment.
- 33:47There's no real sense to me of I like I'm attempting to pretend I'm not
- 33:59in pain. It's more like I'm trying to hold it together and not completely
- 34:04lose my shit in front of you. And yeah, I'll let you know
- 34:07that I'm in pain because look at all this blood, Like there's no point
- 34:10pretending this doesn't hurt. But I'm very very close to like falling apart a
- 34:17little bit, and I'm trying not to let that happen. So yeah,
- 34:22the voice actor is just very effective with that line delivery. So then we
- 34:28go to episode three seventy eight, A Promise from a Distant Day, and
- 34:35we start off on a tiny little thriller bark Boat. It's so cute,
- 34:40guys, It's got this little like bat on the front of it. I
- 34:46don't think that, I'm assuming because of the stitching that Hilden had been also
- 34:57a zombie, So I think that he's gone forever now. And I would
- 35:00just like to register my profound sadness on that front, because I just enjoyed
- 35:05him a lot, and you know, like he just there was something bizarrely
- 35:09wholesome about him, even considering that he worked for like the baddest of the
- 35:13bad guys. So there it's Absalom and Hogback and I think there's one other
- 35:22person with him. I can't remember who the other one is. Oh well,
- 35:25Maria obviously, who's like laid out on the deck. But oh yeah,
- 35:30So they're talking about a new warlord and Hogback says he's a controversial figure.
- 35:37His names Teach. From what I hear, he's a nasty piece of
- 35:42work. And he tosses over a newspaper. On the back of the newspaper,
- 35:50I just want to mention that there's a picture of Iceberg and it just
- 35:54says the Secretary wanted, but nothing further. And I'm very cure what bat
- 36:00articles about. Absalom's reading this, and he says, second division commander of
- 36:06the white Beard Pirates Firefist Ace now awaiting execution at the prison. Ace is
- 36:13easily the most famous henchman white Beard has got working under him. A fine
- 36:19gift for Teach to present to the world government. And Hogback says, I
- 36:25feel like this could spell very bad news to our great pirate era. The
- 36:30tides are turning toward a Maelstrom. There couldn't be a worse time for Maria
- 36:37to be flat on his back. And Absalom says, I see where you're
- 36:43going with this, and I was like, am I following it too?
- 36:49I don't think so. I am assuming that what he's saying is basically,
- 36:53we should go after Ace, and wee like Teach is on the rye.
- 37:00But maybe if we captured this dude or did something with him, that he
- 37:05would be we could like supplant him. But I'm not feeling like I totally
- 37:14get it because, like you know, Maria was basically sanctioned by the government,
- 37:19right, being one of the warlords, right, So is are they
- 37:25saying that they're going to try and like step into his place? Gus says,
- 37:35Absalom survives. Sad Oh Florian says, that's why this is called in
- 37:42the fandom the arc where nothing happened, because nobody like dies or anything.
- 37:46Okay, I can understand, like in the end why they feel that.
- 37:52I really do. I enjoyed this so much, but like in the end
- 37:59with it just being like, oh, Maria just couldn't handle the shadows and
- 38:01kind of just crumpled, you know, in the end, and then you're
- 38:09like, oh, well he crumpled so that we could make room for this
- 38:13other, big bad Kuma, and then Kuma doesn't do anything either. I
- 38:16gotta say, I understand people's frustration. I enjoyed so much of this,
- 38:22you all know that, But in terms of ultimate payoff, yeah, very
- 38:28weak. Sauce Gus says, Teach is Blackbeard, by the way. Oh
- 38:35that's right, I remember hearing that now, so I don't. I'm not
- 38:44entirely clear what it is that Hogback is suggesting that Absalam is picking up on.
- 38:50I'm assuming that it's something to do with Ace, but because Ace is
- 38:52like already in prison and awaiting execution, I'm like, not sure what they're
- 39:00planning to do. If it weren't for the fact that he had been got
- 39:05then I'd be like, oh, they want to capture him for his bounty
- 39:07or something, but it's too late for that, so I don't know,
- 39:13and maybe I'm not supposed to. And this is when Amsalem says, I
- 39:21understand what you're getting at, but the only thing I really care about is
- 39:24having a nice wife. I want a living woman full of blood and passion.
- 39:31Because he says, sure, go pick out a corpse. That's your
- 39:35type. So creepy. So we go back to big thriller Bark and our
- 39:42friends are loading up the sunny Lufy is trying to make do with just a
- 39:49chunk, like giant body sized chunks of cheese, but he wants me and
- 39:53is getting pretty frustrated over the fact that they don't have any and Sangi is
- 39:59like, well, you could help me out a little bit here, because
- 40:01none of the dudes who have gotten their shadows restored. None of them want
- 40:07to help because they don't want to leave the sunshine. And I was like,
- 40:13yeah, I gotta say, if I had been them, I also
- 40:15wouldn't want to leave the sunshine, like it's been how long? Yeah,
- 40:21No, that's I would be camping out for sure. And Sanji says,
- 40:30we got all the food back that was stolen from us, and it looks
- 40:34like somebody stocked us up with Maria's food. I'm assuming once again that this
- 40:40was Kuma. I have to like, it's gotta be right. Who else
- 40:46would do this because he's talking a lola when he says this, And she's
- 40:52like, I wonder who would have done that? And I would have thought
- 40:57it was her and her people. If not them, I'm a go with
- 41:01Kuma. And then we get a really nice moment. You guys, she
- 41:08says, as if food weren't enough, they left you all this too.
- 41:12You don't even have to hunt for treasure, it just delivers itself. And
- 41:16Nami says, I'm in heaven and she's like laid out on a huge pile
- 41:23of loose gold and trinkets and boxes and weapons, everything is sparkling around her.
- 41:34She has the kind of like happy expression that you don't see that often
- 41:37on her face, like a little smile and giant eyes of just like pure
- 41:44bliss. And Lufy picks something out and Usap is clearly worried she's gonna be
- 41:50like, pop my shit down, but instead she's like, oh, yeah,
- 41:53that's just costume jewelry. Of course he can have that. I you,
- 42:02guys, I know that, like so much of the time, the
- 42:07point of a storyline where people get a bunch of money is that then you
- 42:13have to take it from them somehow, right, And I can't bear to
- 42:21watch them lose this treasure. I'm just gonna say this right now. I
- 42:24just can we sidestep that like plot requirement for just a little while and only
- 42:34enjoy this treasure next treasure they come across, Fine, take it, make
- 42:38it a big thing, But can we just like have this one and really
- 42:45just get to enjoy it for what it is? Pretty please, though,
- 42:49I'm saying, oh, Pironas stopped all the food and treasure on the sunny
- 42:58before Kuma erased her. I forgot that she was like taking other stuff out
- 43:02of the kitchen as well, because they took okay, because I was thinking
- 43:07that she was the one who took stuff off the sunny. I was misremembering,
- 43:10forgetting that they took everything off the sunny when they were trying to feed
- 43:14oars. And then when she's about to flee, she's going to take the
- 43:19sunny and like reloads it again. Right, thank you, thank you,
- 43:22thank you. Gus says nothing happened is a reference to Zoro's ordeal, where
- 43:29nothing at all happened here, not due to the fact that nobody dies at
- 43:31this point. That's normal for this show. I mean, I would say
- 43:38still like there's been arcs that and it still feels like despite their not being
- 43:47any like deaths, there's been forward movement on things. I guess. The
- 43:52only thing that's for me pretty major that's changed for them is that they have
- 43:58Brooke now who previously they'd met him and invited him to be part of their
- 44:02crew, but he couldn't go out in the sun, so that was super
- 44:06impossible. And now they've got him with his shadows, so he could potentially
- 44:10become a crew member, which I really hope he's like a permanent addition,
- 44:15but I don't know, Maybe he's just gonna stail off into the sunset with
- 44:16Laboon. I don't know, I'm gonna. I believe you, but I
- 44:23also feel a little bit like, I don't know, but it does kind
- 44:27of feel in a way in the end that the payoff was not The payoff
- 44:31on so many other things has felt pretty significant and this one doesn't. But
- 44:38anyway, so they're loading everything up, and I love just this bit here.
- 44:49Nami is like vaguely aware that Lola called her Nami Zough, and Lola
- 44:58herself is sort of like, I don't get why I even said that I
- 45:01have never met you, but I feel like I know you, And Nami
- 45:06realizes who she is and like runs up and hugs her and is saying,
- 45:10oh my god, I'm so glad to meet you again. And this really
- 45:15made me so happy. You guys, I wish that they could like stay
- 45:19friends. Like you know, they're each going to go their separate ways,
- 45:22so I'm assuming we won't see her for a while, and probably if we
- 45:27do, it'll be in like a filler episode. But I just was glad
- 45:34that the little friendship that they began between the two of them got some closure.
- 45:40You know. I liked this a lot, and she hands over a
- 45:49bunch of treasure and it's like, please take this, and everybody is so
- 45:53shocked at the fact that she's like giving something away. This is like super
- 46:00super out of character. So then we jump over to the crew carrying all
- 46:06kinds of stuff over to the guys who are out in the sun, and
- 46:10they Zoro is still asleep, and he winds up like still being asleep.
- 46:15When they get him on the boat, he's literally passed out. I think
- 46:19it's a Nami who says something like, yeah, I've seen him sleep through
- 46:22a typhoon, so he's not going to be in fighting shape anytime soon.
- 46:29He really took one for the team in the most literal sense. So we
- 46:36then have a conversation between Sanji and two of the guys who were just conscious
- 46:45enough to see what happened with Zoro, and they had been going to tell
- 46:50Lufy about it, but Sanji is extremely serious about how it would Lufy up
- 47:00to hear what Zoro did for him. It would just you know, and
- 47:05I think that he's right. So he tells them not to say anything to
- 47:10Lufy. He makes them promise, and there's a pretty funny moment where there
- 47:15are, you know, like characters around their heads and they're holding their arms
- 47:20up, and I appreciated that Funnimation does translate it as saying, want to
- 47:24talk, wanna talk, wanna talk, wanna talk, So they have to
- 47:30keep the secret. But Robin in one of the very creepy moments of her
- 47:39powers yet again, is she's pushing her ear out of some guy's back so
- 47:47she can listen to the whole conversation. I really really hated it. I
- 47:54love that this is like a possibility and all of this is well and good,
- 47:59but truly, every time I get reminded of some of the ways she
- 48:02can use her power, it just grosses me out. It's like body horror,
- 48:06you know. So he convinces these guys that they won't talk. Robin
- 48:15knows, I don't know if she'll ever spill the beans or not. But
- 48:16then we go over to the party scene, requisite party scene, and Brooke
- 48:23is making lots of jokes about not having taste buds and whatnot. I love
- 48:30that the rest of the crew, even though Frankie's annoyed, everybody else is
- 48:35thinking it's hilarious. He says something about how he thinks he's gained some weight,
- 48:42and he also, like we see him playing the fiddle in his flashbacks,
- 48:47but evidently he also plays the piano. He's just like a real musician
- 48:53of many types. And it's a cute moment because when he starts to play,
- 49:04Robin recognizes the song and she says something about how nostalgic it is to
- 49:08hear again, And I just thought that that was a nice I don't know,
- 49:14because we get so little from Robin that gives her personality for me.
- 49:19Any time that I get reminded that she has feelings, to be honest,
- 49:23that is like fascinating, and I wish we had a little bit more of
- 49:30it. Just I understand her history and I it's awful, Like you guys,
- 49:36remember when I found out about it, how really terrible it felt.
- 49:42But in the present, she still feels like a stranger. So this party
- 49:53with all of them sort of winds up dissolving into the memories of what happened
- 50:02with Laboon, because Lufy comes over and tells Brooke that we did meet Laboon.
- 50:10We know where he is. He's still waiting for you. He remembers
- 50:13the promise that you made. And it's sort of funny because like and this
- 50:16is just the way that the show will often work. But I really thought
- 50:22that we had sort of established that they had met Laboon and knew where he
- 50:27was. But it seems as if Brooke just didn't really believe them or understand,
- 50:35Like I don't know, It's like he's hearing this for the first time
- 50:38and he just starts sobbing crying, and the again voice actor who does his
- 50:45voice the sobbing is so hysterical. It's very very good. And then we
- 50:52get to see exactly what it was like with meeting him and what the crew
- 50:59was like and how much they like cared about each other. And I actually
- 51:05really liked this storyline. So we go. The first scene of Brooke with
- 51:13his crewmates is him waking them all up with a song. Have you guys
- 51:19ever had somebody do this to you? I just question, just a quick
- 51:22question, because I my father could play the trumpet. It was like pretty
- 51:28rudimentary, but he could definitely play, and he more than once came into
- 51:39my room when he felt I had slept long enough and played it in my
- 51:46room. A fucking trumpet, you know, in a room like the size
- 51:51of this office. I cannot emphasize enough, you guys, how angry it
- 51:59made me. I would wake up in a towering rage with nowhere to direct
- 52:06it. Because my dad thought it was hilarious. You like, forget it,
- 52:13absolutely imm even just thinking about it now, I am One of my
- 52:21favorite favorite things that we have managed with technology is that I now have an
- 52:28Apple Watch which vibrates as an alarm to wake me up, and it's very
- 52:32effective. It wakes me up and I don't have to have any annoying sound
- 52:39to force me awake, which is, in my opinion, no matter how
- 52:45gentle a sound, it is the worst way to wake up. It's so
- 52:52just it doesn't matter how nice the sound is, or if it's a song
- 52:58you love, I guarantee you, within six days of you using that song
- 53:02for your alarm, you will not like that song anymore. It's just how
- 53:07it works, you know. So anyway, him doing this, I was
- 53:12sort of like, I absolutely cannot with you right now, Brooke. I'm
- 53:20a fan of you. I really like you, but the fact that you're
- 53:22doing this to your people, I can't approve of it. I just can't
- 53:27do it. They're all real pissed at him. So finally we go up
- 53:34to the deck and the captain's up there brushing his teeth. His name is
- 53:39Calico and he's got like tattoos around his eye and mouth. He's awesome looking,
- 53:46and I'm super bummed that he's dead because what a great name, what
- 53:52a great character design, and he just seemed cool, you know, like
- 53:57goodhearted dude. He's the one who comes with the idea of eventually turning around
- 54:02and coming back for Laboon. I just really like him, and it makes
- 54:07me so sad to know that he's gone. And this he's playing the music
- 54:13on the deck, Brooke is for the captain, and this is when a
- 54:16whale, a little baby whale shows up and starts making sounds, and it's
- 54:23like the music drew him, which makes sense because whale sounds there is a
- 54:30sort of almost string instrument kind of quality to them. And I love when
- 54:35he shows up and everybody's just like, oh my god, he's so cute.
- 54:37And the way that Brooke speaks to Laboon is it just reminded me so
- 54:44much of the way that Owen speaks to the dogs, especially to Sam though
- 54:51like it. He calls him buddy and he's like, oh, good boy,
- 54:54and it's just everything about the interactions that they have. It felt it
- 55:00felt for me like very familiar, and I think that's part of why it
- 55:06started to get me so emotional. There's a moment when they're like in the
- 55:10midst of a fight with another ship and a couple of guys get thrown overboard.
- 55:17At this point, we Brook already he has eaten the devil fruits,
- 55:24so he can't swim to go help his friends, and he turns and looks
- 55:29and he's like planning to send them a raft, and Laboon came up from
- 55:32underneath them and like lifts them up and saves them because he's a precious,
- 55:37sweet little baby who can do no wrong. Ever, So we then get
- 55:46a sort of like montage of what they go through as they're like, you
- 55:52know, making their way through the high seas with Laboon by their side,
- 55:58and how Brooke is bonding with him, and it's just all of this is
- 56:05so cute. He's so adorable. The illustrations in this show of animals,
- 56:13they can really make things heartbreakingly adorable. And eventually we have a moment where
- 56:22they are going to be going over to the Grand Line and they're telling him
- 56:25that he can't follow and you guys, this was this was the part.
- 56:31Later on they have to say goodbye again, but at this point it looks
- 56:37like it's going to be their main goodbye and Brooke. They have to hide
- 56:45so that Laboon can't see them and call to them, so they like sit
- 56:51down behind the the like rails of the ship. This was really hard.
- 57:04This is this is the part that kind of like got to me, is
- 57:07having to get an animal to understand by removing yourself so that they can't like
- 57:16keep appealing to your emotions even though they still are but they can't see it
- 57:22happening. And I had to do this with the puppies a lot, especially
- 57:28when we were down to just like two or three, and I would bring
- 57:32Pippin inside and they would like come to the window and cry because they weren't
- 57:38also inside. And now I like switch Pippin and Sam out, and they
- 57:44have to be separated, so there's always one of them in the yard,
- 57:46and sometimes one of them will like be at the window and I have to
- 57:52sort of stand out of sight and wait for them to stop crying and like
- 57:57go play, because once they get accustomed to the idea that I'm not right
- 58:02here, it's okay, and they go play and they, you know,
- 58:07have a good time. But when they are still preoccupied with maybe getting me
- 58:13to let them inside, they will stand there and like make sounds. You
- 58:17guys, they're half husky, and I don't know how many of you are
- 58:21familiar, but huskies are an animal that makes sounds beyond belief, frankly,
- 58:27and they have inherited some of that, so they will howl in this way
- 58:32that just recks me, and I have had to do this little trick myself.
- 58:40So they get to the other side, they meet Crocus, and this
- 58:46is when he's like, so what about this whale? Is this a pet
- 58:50of yours? And everybody's like what. And Brooke is so excited. He
- 58:54has been so bummed out, like since they first said goodbye to Laboon.
- 59:00They run into Crocus and they're like gonna get supplies and they're gonna have a
- 59:04celebration, and everybody's cheering, and Brooke is off in the back, the
- 59:08only one who isn't cheering because his heart is shattered from saying goodbye to Laboon.
- 59:15And I just fucking felt him on that so hard. So when it
- 59:19turns out that Laboon crossed and is here with them. He is overjoyed,
- 59:23but is also like, dude, truly though, you can't come with us
- 59:29past this point, And it seems like Laboon really gets it this time.
- 59:34And that's when Calico comes up and is like, how about this. You
- 59:39chill here for like two maybe three years max, and we will come back
- 59:46for you, because I don't think it's going to take that long, but
- 59:51you'll be bigger by then and you know, more able to handle things,
- 59:54will be done with what we're trying to do. And Laboon agree and they
- 1:00:00sail away and Brooke, for his part, as much as it's like painful
- 1:00:07to say goodbye to Laboon, this promise of eventually being able to see him
- 1:00:14again is enough to take the edge off of the sadness. Which is it
- 1:00:21really like, is so understandable to me how obsessed Brooke is with getting back
- 1:00:30to La Boon after all of this. I would be the exact same way.
- 1:00:35I mean, I can't. This is the sort of thing that you
- 1:00:40know, I understand that there are times where people do have to surrender their
- 1:00:45pets, and it's like totally valid. Especially I have a friend right now
- 1:00:49who is disabled and something has happened, and she has three little dogs and
- 1:00:55she is having to surrender all of them. She found a home for one,
- 1:00:59but there are two more, and it's basically what She went from three
- 1:01:05dogs to no dogs within like four days, and it's killing her to have
- 1:01:12to do it. But she literally is like so ill that she can't move
- 1:01:16a lot of the time, and they aren't getting cared for. So it's
- 1:01:21not like always surrendering your dogs or animals in general is a bad thing,
- 1:01:25but there's a difference between surrendering with the like conscientious sensation of responsibility and people
- 1:01:37who just ditch their animals and bail, which truly, the number of people
- 1:01:44that do that, it's astounding to me. And I know that I could
- 1:01:52have probably tried to surrender some of the puppies. There were every place seemed
- 1:01:58to be pretty full. I probably could have somewhere and they would have taken
- 1:02:04them, and I just couldn't bear to do it. I don't If I'm
- 1:02:07leaving them with a family and a home, fine, that's good for them,
- 1:02:13but just leaving them somewhere and not knowing what's going to happen to them
- 1:02:16and if they're going to find a place I couldn't do it. I you
- 1:02:22know, I would just feel so much responsibility and I would probably like obsessively
- 1:02:27check in and be like, hey, how is Sam doing even after And
- 1:02:31so this feeling that Brooke has a responsibility to LABOONA was like, totally get
- 1:02:37it. Agree with you wholeheartedly, and I think that's like evidence that you're
- 1:02:42a good person, honestly. So yeah, that's the end of the episode,
