- 5:17Speaker 1: You know yesterday and I was thinking about this this
- 5:19Speaker 1: morning driving in yesterday. What I was learning here on
- 5:28Speaker 1: this podcast with Best Buddies International, and what a thrill
- 5:34Speaker 1: it was to have Alice back on the air and
- 5:36Speaker 1: talking about this this big walk that she's going to
- 5:38Speaker 1: be doing on May ninth, Best Buddies International, something that
- 5:47Speaker 1: I had never even heard of. I didn't know anything
- 5:50Speaker 1: about it, and by the end of the day yesterday,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I was like chatting with best buddies and just learning
- 6:02Speaker 1: about this incredible global organization and what they do for
- 6:09Speaker 1: folks with intellectual disabilities. Absolutely staggering what they do. And
- 6:19Speaker 1: to have Alice a participant in the walk on the
- 6:22Speaker 1: air yesterday along with the New England or New Hampshire,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I should say director yesterday, Sarah, what a joy to
- 6:33Speaker 1: have both of these folks on the air and promote
- 6:35Speaker 1: this yesterday. I'm learning a lot this week and I'm
- 6:39Speaker 1: going to learn something this morning, and I have to
- 6:42Speaker 1: be honest with you. This was again very similar to yesterday.
- 6:47Speaker 1: This was something that I had never heard of, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, got to have this
- 6:53Speaker 1: on aired out because if you know I don't know
- 6:57Speaker 1: about it, I'm guessing that they're are others that don't
- 7:01Speaker 1: know about this, and let's make them aware. Cassie Bickford
- 7:06Speaker 1: is my guest this morning with Vermont Destination Imagination. Thank
- 7:13Speaker 1: you so much for comingting here. Cassie, you you called.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I don't know if it was if it was a
- 7:19Speaker 1: phone call or a text message, but it was. It
- 7:24Speaker 1: was at least a good month ago. I think where
- 7:26Speaker 1: you're like, hey, my name's Cassie Bickford. I'm with Vermont
- 7:31Speaker 1: Destination Imagination. We won first place at the Vermont Tournament.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We're trying to get into the Global the Global competition,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and I was like, who is this person and what
- 7:42Speaker 1: are they talking about? I've I had to learn a
- 7:45Speaker 1: little bit what this is. But tell us what Vermont
- 7:49Speaker 1: Destination Imagination is.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:52Speaker 3: So, Destination Imagination is actually a worldwide program, and it
- 7:58Speaker 3: is a program that starts with and goes up to
- 8:00Speaker 3: college and it focuses on creativity and problem solving.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And it's a combination of the.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Science, technology, engineering, math with a component of theater, so
- 8:11Speaker 3: it makes it really fun. People all around the world
- 8:14Speaker 3: can do it. And so I'm part of the Vermont
- 8:17Speaker 3: Destination Imagination. I'm one of the team managers, so I
- 8:20Speaker 3: manage my own team.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And a little bit about the program.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It's a little confusing to explain, so I will explain
- 8:27Speaker 3: it in a generic way and then I'll give you
- 8:29Speaker 3: an example so that it makes it more clear. Okay,
- 8:31Speaker 3: So in Destination Imagination, there is what we call a
- 8:36Speaker 3: central challenge, which is a problem that your team needs
- 8:40Speaker 3: to solve, and they're in different categories. So there's a
- 8:43Speaker 3: Fine Arts one which really focuses on theater pieces. There's
- 8:46Speaker 3: a technology one that focuses on ensuring that you have
- 8:49Speaker 3: technology pieces in it. There's a scientific one, so you're
- 8:53Speaker 3: gonna have to do some research about whatever topic it
- 8:57Speaker 3: is for the year. There's a Rising Stars one which
- 9:01Speaker 3: is for the younger kids preschool to second grade. And
- 9:05Speaker 3: I'm missing one or two more categories, so I apologize.
- 9:09Speaker 3: So your team would choose one of those categories. So
- 9:13Speaker 3: this year my team chose the Technical Challenge. And what
- 9:18Speaker 3: Destination Imagination does is they propose what the problem is,
- 9:22Speaker 3: what components you have to have in it, and your
- 9:24Speaker 3: team has to decide how to figure this out by themselves.
- 9:27Speaker 3: So this year our challenge in the Technical Challenge was
- 9:31Speaker 3: we had to create a game show and we had
- 9:33Speaker 3: to have a host and at least two contestants, and
- 9:36Speaker 3: you had to make sense. It had to make sense
- 9:39Speaker 3: of what's the objective of the goal? How do you win?
- 9:42Speaker 3: You had to have a piece called a gimmick that
- 9:46Speaker 3: you needed to use to play your game, and so
- 9:49Speaker 3: our team chose to use a wheel and so the
- 9:52Speaker 3: spinning wheel went and whatever section it landed on would.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Be the con Teston's challenge.
- 10:01Speaker 3: We also had to have a reveal, so we had
- 10:04Speaker 3: to have something that would reveal, uncover, basically make something known,
- 10:11Speaker 3: and we had to use technical methods to do that,
- 10:14Speaker 3: and we had to use technical methods for our gimmick
- 10:16Speaker 3: as well. So we used a motor for our wheel
- 10:20Speaker 3: to get our wheel to spin, and for our reveal
- 10:24Speaker 3: we had used some hydraulics.
- 10:26Speaker 2: So we had a box.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And in the box there was a platform with a
- 10:31Speaker 3: We called it Lambert Beanie because our game host was
- 10:34Speaker 3: a bee and our contestants were flowers. My kids got
- 10:38Speaker 3: really imaginative this year, so we had a box with
- 10:42Speaker 3: a platform in it and the little Lamber Beanie and
- 10:45Speaker 3: at the end when they were revealing the grand prize,
- 10:48Speaker 3: they had some hydraulic systems going so that the platform
- 10:52Speaker 3: came up above the box and revealed the price.
- 10:56Speaker 2: The other piece we had to do so.
- 10:58Speaker 3: We have the gimmick, the rev Oh my goodness, I'm blinking.
- 11:02Speaker 3: There was one more technical thing we had to do.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I'm sitting here and I'm first of all, I'm fascinated. Secondly,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I'm like, man, I can't help but hear you and
- 11:20Speaker 1: think I wish something like this was going on when
- 11:24Speaker 1: I was a little kid. I would have loved something
- 11:28Speaker 1: like this. Frankly, i'd loved I'd love it now, Yeah
- 11:30Speaker 1: you would. That's so cool.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And another example, we had another team and they chose
- 11:37Speaker 3: the Fine Arts Challenge, and so the Fine Arts Challenge
- 11:40Speaker 3: this year was they had.
- 11:41Speaker 2: To create an origin story for a.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Superhero and a super villain, and they had to use
- 11:47Speaker 3: stage makeup was one of the things that they were
- 11:50Speaker 3: being judged on. And then they also had to create
- 11:53Speaker 3: a costume that would change during the performance. And so
- 11:56Speaker 3: that's a big piece about your central challenge is after
- 11:59Speaker 3: you figure out the components that you have to solve,
- 12:02Speaker 3: you then have to create a play that makes sense
- 12:04Speaker 3: with the beginning, a middle, and end where your audience
- 12:07Speaker 3: can follow it. And it's just really interesting how the
- 12:10Speaker 3: different challenges and the different teams solve it. My favorite
- 12:14Speaker 3: part is the adults cannot make any of the decisions,
- 12:17Speaker 3: cannot do any of the work.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So I couldn't do.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Any components of building our reveal, and I couldn't tell
- 12:24Speaker 3: them how to make it work.
- 12:25Speaker 2: They had to figure it out on their own.
- 12:28Speaker 3: The other cool thing is we go to a competition,
- 12:31Speaker 3: and so everyone in our age level we were middle
- 12:35Speaker 3: school students, so everyone in the middle school who chose
- 12:38Speaker 3: the technical challenge. We're competing against each other and we
- 12:41Speaker 3: like to watch the other teams because their solution is
- 12:44Speaker 3: not the same as ours. We might have similarities, but
- 12:47Speaker 3: it's just really inspiring and it just like mind blowing
- 12:51Speaker 3: seeing how someone else solved the same problem, because when
- 12:54Speaker 3: you're in it, you kind of think there's only one
- 12:55Speaker 3: way to do it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: It's really fascinating.
- 12:58Speaker 1: The brain is what now, the biggest organ in our body.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I think something might be right. I might be making
- 13:08Speaker 1: this up, but I think it is. And it's it's
- 13:11Speaker 1: fascinating to see you get so many of them that
- 13:14Speaker 1: are all coming together and like working together, there's going
- 13:21Speaker 1: to be the same solution twice.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Correct.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like the yeah, yeah, it's it's very exciting.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So this is not like a Vermont thing. This is
- 13:35Speaker 1: a global things everywhere.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah, So it is everywhere.
- 13:41Speaker 3: So you can have people from different countries, and you
- 13:43Speaker 3: have people all over the United States doing the same thing.
- 13:47Speaker 3: So middle school students all over the United States and
- 13:50Speaker 3: all over the world. Some of those middle school students
- 13:53Speaker 3: decided to do the same challenge as us, and so
- 13:56Speaker 3: we are working on going to a global competition. So
- 13:59Speaker 3: we won first place in our challenge for our age group,
- 14:02Speaker 3: and we're working towards going to a global competition and
- 14:05Speaker 3: is held in Kansas City this year, and so we're
- 14:07Speaker 3: doing a bunch of fund raising and one of the
- 14:10Speaker 3: most exciting things about going there is now we have
- 14:13Speaker 3: way more teams that we can meet and look at
- 14:17Speaker 3: their solutions, and I'm just I'm just so excited to
- 14:20Speaker 3: see how other people solve the same problem that my
- 14:22Speaker 3: team worked done.
- 14:23Speaker 1: When is that competition in Kansas City.
- 14:26Speaker 3: This is May twenty firth first to the twenty fifth,
- 14:29Speaker 3: so it's four full days and your team will do
- 14:33Speaker 3: their challenge. They'll present their challenge on one of the days,
- 14:36Speaker 3: which we don't know what they are is yet. But
- 14:39Speaker 3: then they also have a bunch of events. They have
- 14:41Speaker 3: like a cave stimulation like tunnel crawling that you can do.
- 14:46Speaker 3: They have a ballerspash, so there's a dance party with
- 14:51Speaker 3: a duct tape fashion show, so my kids are very
- 14:54Speaker 3: excited about that, and then there's a pin trading event,
- 14:57Speaker 3: which is like the top most exciting part of going
- 15:00Speaker 3: to globals and so people from all these teams bring
- 15:05Speaker 3: pins from their state or their country and we all
- 15:08Speaker 3: get together and you can trade them. So when you
- 15:10Speaker 3: go home, you have these pins.
- 15:11Speaker 2: From all over.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Wow.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, we're really excited.
- 15:14Speaker 1: What do you do with the littles that are coming
- 15:19Speaker 1: into this and starting this program and maybe a little
- 15:25Speaker 1: overwhelmed for lack of a better term, and don't really
- 15:30Speaker 1: understand or have the capacity to get things going here
- 15:35Speaker 1: and start making decisions on solutions.
- 15:38Speaker 3: So the really cool thing about what we call a
- 15:41Speaker 3: rising star, So that's the early learners that is preschool
- 15:45Speaker 3: through second grade, and their challenge is way more simple,
- 15:51Speaker 3: So they usually do not have they don't have to
- 15:54Speaker 3: learn about science, they don't have to have the technology.
- 15:57Speaker 2: What they're really doing is.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Getting it's introduced into this problem challenging mode and trying
- 16:06Speaker 3: to come up with a play that makes sense. And
- 16:09Speaker 3: it's really in that age group, it's really encouraged to
- 16:11Speaker 3: be more of like playing really And this year the
- 16:17Speaker 3: challenge was community helpers, so they had to learn about
- 16:22Speaker 3: community helpers like firemen, police officers, nurses, people that work
- 16:28Speaker 3: at like a humane shelter. And then they had to
- 16:31Speaker 3: choose one that interests them and create a story about
- 16:34Speaker 3: how they helped solve a problem. And so it really
- 16:39Speaker 3: allows them to use their imagination to just write a
- 16:41Speaker 3: story or act out a story, which is really age
- 16:44Speaker 3: appropriate for them because they do a lot of role
- 16:46Speaker 3: playing in general, and their age is non competitive, so
- 16:50Speaker 3: the pressure is not there. It's really all about the
- 16:53Speaker 3: fun and creating a solution.
- 16:55Speaker 2: It's very exciting.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It's so cool. So the fire a couple of questions here.
- 17:00Speaker 1: So where do you practice, where do you have your rehearsals,
- 17:05Speaker 1: how often, what time? And how do you get involved?
- 17:11Speaker 2: Okay, Wow, that was a lot.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Sorry, no, it's okay.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I'll do the best I can and if I miss one,
- 17:16Speaker 2: you might have to remind me.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:18Speaker 3: So most Destination Imagination teams meet at their school or
- 17:22Speaker 3: an after school program, okay, And so our team meets
- 17:26Speaker 3: at twin Field that's where we started meeting. And we
- 17:29Speaker 3: meet after school and we meet once a week, and
- 17:32Speaker 3: I think that's pretty standard that teams meet about once
- 17:34Speaker 3: a week and we meet right after school, which helps
- 17:40Speaker 3: parents not have to bring their child back to school
- 17:43Speaker 3: that has been a barrier in the past.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And we meet for about an hour and a half
- 17:47Speaker 2: and then.
- 17:47Speaker 3: When the competition gets closer, we usually meet for about
- 17:50Speaker 3: two hours.
- 17:52Speaker 1: What else where where's it helped like in the in
- 17:55Speaker 1: the in the auditorium, in the theater, and the.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Gym for the competent practice for you practices. Most of
- 18:03Speaker 3: my practices have been in an art room so that
- 18:05Speaker 3: there's art supplies for us building props. This year we're
- 18:08Speaker 3: meeting in the cafeteria, which gives us a lot more
- 18:10Speaker 3: space and we're still able to use the art supplies.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I'm not really sure what other teams do.
- 18:16Speaker 2: They probably choose a room at their.
- 18:17Speaker 3: School as well, that's free, okay, And then when you
- 18:20Speaker 3: go to the competition, they usually rent out a school
- 18:24Speaker 3: and your presentations are in the gym or a tech room,
- 18:27Speaker 3: and some of them are in like the library or
- 18:29Speaker 3: the classrooms.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Okay, thank you, Donna, She says, the Brain is the
- 18:33Speaker 1: third largest organ. Okay, So you say other schools, So
- 18:39Speaker 1: other schools in Vermont? Like, yes, how is there are.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Several There are several teams in Vermont, not as much
- 18:45Speaker 3: as we'd like, so we're hoping for more members. We're
- 18:47Speaker 3: trying to get a little more publicity, which is part
- 18:50Speaker 3: of why I'm here today, so that Yeah, there's teams
- 18:53Speaker 3: all over Vermont and we get together one day in
- 18:56Speaker 3: March and do our competition and get to kind of
- 18:58Speaker 3: meet each other and interact with other team in Vermont.
- 19:01Speaker 1: In Vermont, and where is that held?
- 19:03Speaker 3: This year was a Barrytown school, Okay, and we've already
- 19:06Speaker 3: had that won. We won, We won first place for
- 19:09Speaker 3: our age group in our challenge, So there'll be more
- 19:12Speaker 3: than one first place winner in Vermont.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Where where are the other schools towns that are Let's see,
- 19:18Speaker 4: we have Cavendish, West, Rutland, Randolph, Chelsea, I think there's
- 19:25Speaker 4: a branch Free team, and then there's a Saint Albans team, there's.
- 19:30Speaker 3: A bunch up north and I don't know a lot
- 19:32Speaker 3: of the town names, but yeah, there's a We're really
- 19:36Speaker 3: spread out all over Vermont.
- 19:38Speaker 1: So how does schools that don't have this, how do
- 19:42Speaker 1: they get it? Like, Okay, do you have to go
- 19:44Speaker 1: to them or do they come to you? Or how
- 19:46Speaker 1: does this work?
- 19:47Speaker 3: So what they would do is they would go to
- 19:49Speaker 3: the destination imagination. I think it's dot org all right,
- 19:52Speaker 3: and there is a link there. So there's a video
- 19:55Speaker 3: at first that shows you what is Destination Imagination, and
- 19:59Speaker 3: then it shows you how to get involved, and you
- 20:02Speaker 3: can choose to find a team near you to see
- 20:04Speaker 3: if you want to sign up for a team that
- 20:06Speaker 3: already exists, or if you want to start your own team,
- 20:09Speaker 3: like say there isn't a team at your school and
- 20:11Speaker 3: you want to start one, or there is.
- 20:13Speaker 2: A team but not for your age group.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Okay.
- 20:15Speaker 2: There is a.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Link that you would click and it tells you how
- 20:18Speaker 3: to become what's called a team manager, and so you
- 20:21Speaker 3: would be running your own team, and it really walks
- 20:23Speaker 3: you through how to do that.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And that's where you are, Yes, I'm a.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Team manager, okay.
- 20:27Speaker 3: And then you would recruit at your school and your
- 20:29Speaker 3: community and say, hey, I'm a team manager. I'm doing
- 20:32Speaker 3: this Destination Imagination program and you might have to explain
- 20:35Speaker 3: to people what that means. And you know, I'm looking
- 20:38Speaker 3: for these age groups and I would like to work
- 20:40Speaker 3: for these kids. And then you develop your own schedule
- 20:42Speaker 3: for your meeting times and so anyone anywhere.
- 20:45Speaker 2: If you haven't heard.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Of it or you don't have it at your school,
- 20:48Speaker 3: you can bring it to your school, you can bring
- 20:49Speaker 3: it to your community. It doesn't have to be through school,
- 20:53Speaker 3: like you could just have your team and find a
- 20:56Speaker 3: place to meet.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Great point, what's the cost done on something like this?
- 21:01Speaker 3: So for a Vermont team, there's a little bit of
- 21:04Speaker 3: an affiliate fee, So per team, it's two hundred and sixty.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Five dollars for the year. For the year.
- 21:11Speaker 3: The good thing about being involved in this school is
- 21:13Speaker 3: most schools will cover that cost.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Okay, wow, I'm just and I've got the page here
- 21:23Speaker 1: Creative Imagination dot Org.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Okay, thank you, Yeah, I got.
- 21:27Speaker 1: That right here. Everyone's looking at it right now.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Wow, So the Vermont State Tournament was a success. I'm
- 21:36Speaker 1: reading that right now. First of all, please hop on
- 21:39Speaker 1: their Facebook page and follow their page, and we're going
- 21:44Speaker 1: to put that up here as well. It's Vermont Destination
- 21:49Speaker 1: Imagination and I'll show you the page right now. Bring
- 21:53Speaker 1: it over there. But we need some more. We got
- 21:56Speaker 1: three hundred and twenty two followers. We need to up
- 21:59Speaker 1: that right now now. So if you can follow this
- 22:03Speaker 1: page that you see right now on your monitor, this
- 22:08Speaker 1: is really really cool. I love hearing about stuff like this,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and I love the fact that it's it's good for kids.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It's really good for kids. I mean I'm complaining all
- 22:22Speaker 1: the time about all of the crap in this world
- 22:26Speaker 1: with our phones and our distractions. And I know I
- 22:31Speaker 1: sound like an old man, but the video games and
- 22:34Speaker 1: all the stuff, it's like, you know, and I'm always
- 22:36Speaker 1: trying to say, I remember when I was a kid,
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, playing in the backyard, climbing trees, raking leave piles,
- 22:43Speaker 1: riding bikes, digging holes using my mind being. You know,
- 22:48Speaker 1: we didn't have cell phones. We didn't we didn't have anything.
- 22:51Speaker 1: We had to be creative. I mean, we just you
- 22:56Speaker 1: just did. But now everything is spoon fed to us.
- 23:03Speaker 1: We've got everything on a silver platter that's being handed
- 23:05Speaker 1: right to us. We have a million one distractions. So
- 23:08Speaker 1: anytime you know, kids are out, you know, playing basketball
- 23:14Speaker 1: for their school, or softball or track and field, no
- 23:17Speaker 1: matter what it is, if they're getting active, that's awesome.
- 23:22Speaker 1: But also to be able to not just I mean
- 23:27Speaker 1: this is theater yeah plus plus plusus.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah, because you have the science, technology, engineering, and math,
- 23:34Speaker 3: so you've got a little.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Bit of everything all rolled into one learning and they
- 23:38Speaker 2: don't know they're learning exactly exactly.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yes, this is really cool. I had no idea about this.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm ashamed of myself.
- 23:48Speaker 3: You know, it used to be Odyssey of the Mind,
- 23:51Speaker 3: so a lot of people might be more familiar with
- 23:53Speaker 3: that term. When I was growing up, it was Odyssey
- 23:55Speaker 3: in the Mind, and then the name changed the Destination Imagination,
- 23:59Speaker 3: and it's it's still a big program, but I feel
- 24:02Speaker 3: like a lot of people would recognize it more if
- 24:04Speaker 3: it was called Odyssey as the Mind.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I think it was out Ofsea of the Mind much
- 24:08Speaker 3: longer than Destination Imagination, although they might be tied.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Now listen and it's this isn't just the Cassie Bickford show.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You have quite a few people that are doing this
- 24:24Speaker 1: with you, alongside you.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, like all over Vermont.
- 24:28Speaker 1: All over. Yeah, tell me about Jane.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:33Speaker 3: So Jane is our Vermont affiliate director. So she is
- 24:38Speaker 3: the head of Vermont Destination Imagination. So she has like
- 24:42Speaker 3: many hats and a big shoot a fil So she
- 24:46Speaker 3: organizes the competition, helps get prizes. She checks in on
- 24:51Speaker 3: the team managers and offers support, like how can I
- 24:54Speaker 3: best support you? Where are you guys at with your practices?
- 24:58Speaker 3: Are you getting ready for the competition? And she's been
- 25:01Speaker 3: really helpful to me recently because we're doing some fundraising
- 25:05Speaker 3: and so she has been checking in with me, how's
- 25:07Speaker 3: your fundraising going? Can I be there? Can I offer thing?
- 25:10Speaker 3: We just had a bake sale and she brought these
- 25:13Speaker 3: really big cookies that were different shapes, like there was
- 25:15Speaker 3: a cow, there was a lady, and it had all
- 25:18Speaker 3: these details on it. It was really great. And she's
- 25:21Speaker 3: letting us use some of the big signs that we
- 25:24Speaker 3: use at the competition. And she does that for everybody.
- 25:27Speaker 3: She checks in on all these teams. She lives, sleeps,
- 25:31Speaker 3: and eats d I.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Is this her full time chop?
- 25:35Speaker 2: You know? I don't know. But if it's not, I
- 25:37Speaker 2: don't know how she manages more?
- 25:38Speaker 1: Right? Yeah, wow, you guys just did a bottle drive
- 25:44Speaker 1: over at black Beard Biodiesel over in Plainfield. Yes you were.
- 25:49Speaker 1: You did the bake sale that you were just mentioning
- 25:51Speaker 1: over at Shaws in Berlin. Are you still looking for
- 25:56Speaker 1: bottles in donations?
- 25:57Speaker 2: And yeah we are.
- 25:59Speaker 3: So we're hoping to do a bottle drive every Sunday
- 26:02Speaker 3: at BlackBerry Bile Diesel. It depends on if I can
- 26:05Speaker 3: split my team in two because we have a couple
- 26:07Speaker 3: of Sunday things coming up. So this Sunday May third,
- 26:11Speaker 3: we're having another bake sale at Shaw's in Berlin from
- 26:15Speaker 3: ten to two.
- 26:16Speaker 2: And then on Tuesday.
- 26:19Speaker 3: May fifth, Synco Demile, we are having a bingo night
- 26:22Speaker 3: at twin Field and so it's ten dollars to play
- 26:27Speaker 3: five cards or five games. In the last game you
- 26:31Speaker 3: can get a fifty dollars cash price. We're also going
- 26:34Speaker 3: to have a fifty to fifty and concession stands and popcorn.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Which is a huge deal.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Absolutely yeah, so we're really excited about that. And then
- 26:44Speaker 3: Wednesday May six, at the hay Barn at Goddard College
- 26:47Speaker 3: in Plainfield, we are working on a dinner. I can't
- 26:50Speaker 3: remember if it's going to be a pub night or
- 26:52Speaker 3: an Italian night. They're kind of working out the finer
- 26:54Speaker 3: details with chef.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I think his name is Zach.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I have a co manager who's helping me and so
- 27:01Speaker 3: she's managing the dinner.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Her name is Jessica Della Peppa Clayton and so.
- 27:05Speaker 1: She that's a last name.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Yes, yes, So she's working on getting us a dinner night.
- 27:11Speaker 3: So there'll be more details to come on that and
- 27:13Speaker 3: we plan on posting it all over front Page, Front
- 27:16Speaker 3: Porch Forum and then on Sunday, May tenth, we're hoping
- 27:20Speaker 3: to have a Mother's Day pancake breakfast.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah. So, and that's going to be at twin Field.
- 27:25Speaker 3: As well, and that is from nine to twelve. And
- 27:30Speaker 3: if you get your tickets in advance, it's ten dollars
- 27:33Speaker 3: an adult. It's all you can eat pancakes, and we
- 27:35Speaker 3: also have a gluten free option and some eggs and bacon.
- 27:39Speaker 3: An advanced ticket for a kid is five dollars. That's
- 27:42Speaker 3: twelve and under, and then under five is free. And
- 27:45Speaker 3: we have limited tickets.
- 27:46Speaker 2: At the door.
- 27:47Speaker 3: So at the door, the adults would be fifteen and
- 27:49Speaker 3: a kid would be ten.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Okay, now now listen. I I was trying to write
- 27:56Speaker 1: all this town and as you were saying, I gave up.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Okay, do you want me to say it again slower.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Here's what I need you to do. Do not leave
- 28:07Speaker 1: here today without chatting with me over the air so
- 28:11Speaker 1: I can get all of this stuff because I want
- 28:15Speaker 1: to get this all over the aired out page and
- 28:17Speaker 1: I want to promote this as heavily as possible. That yeah,
- 28:21Speaker 1: but that was that's a lot. That's yeah, but that's impressive.
- 28:25Speaker 1: That's you guys are really we're really trying. You're trying hard.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, we're putting in the effort and.
- 28:30Speaker 1: This is all to help fund you guys so that
- 28:33Speaker 1: you can go to the globals. Yes, in Kansas City.
- 28:36Speaker 2: In Kansas City.
- 28:37Speaker 3: So it's about twelve thousand to thirteen thousand dollars that
- 28:42Speaker 3: we need. We've got some of it now. We have
- 28:45Speaker 3: about ten thousand dollars less that we have to are
- 28:49Speaker 3: left that we have to fundraise for. So we're hoping
- 28:52Speaker 3: some of these events will bring in some bigger run revenue.
- 28:55Speaker 3: We also have a go fund me page, but we're
- 28:57Speaker 3: having a hard time getting it on our immediate circles,
- 29:02Speaker 3: so sharing that would be just amazing so we can.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Reach our audience. I'm going to share it right now. Okay,
- 29:09Speaker 1: thank you, Just give me a second here, and I'm
- 29:13Speaker 1: going to drop this link boom right into the comments
- 29:17Speaker 1: and if anyone would like to support of Vermont Destination
- 29:23Speaker 1: Imagination right now, there's the GoFundMe link. It's in the comments.
- 29:28Speaker 1: And if you're listening to this, if you're not watching
- 29:31Speaker 1: you and you're listening, please go back and click on
- 29:35Speaker 1: this and whatever you can throw five, ten, fifteen bucks
- 29:39Speaker 1: that you know, you don't have to be a huge
- 29:42Speaker 1: hero here. Just every little bit counts, right.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Every little bit counts, and every share as well, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 3: really boosting our numbers. We're really really hoping to go
- 29:51Speaker 3: this year and end the year in a bang. So
- 29:54Speaker 3: my particular team, I have three children this year, and
- 29:57Speaker 3: they have been on this team together for full four years.
- 30:00Speaker 3: And out of the four years, we have one first
- 30:03Speaker 3: place three times and one of our yeah, one of
- 30:07Speaker 3: our team managers is leaving the state, she's moving, and
- 30:10Speaker 3: another one isn't sure they want to do it next year.
- 30:13Speaker 3: So I really I want to give them the full
- 30:15Speaker 3: experience and really let all their hard work for the
- 30:18Speaker 3: last four years pay off.
- 30:21Speaker 2: This is a great group of kids.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Last year we didn't win first place, which is fine.
- 30:27Speaker 3: We're not always about winning first place. One of the
- 30:30Speaker 3: things that I really want to install in my children
- 30:33Speaker 3: is to not give up. And a really good example
- 30:37Speaker 3: of that. We had a really rough year last year.
- 30:40Speaker 3: We also chose a technical challenge.
- 30:43Speaker 2: And it was it was a lot. We worked all season.
- 30:46Speaker 3: We started in October and the competition was in March,
- 30:50Speaker 3: and our device didn't work and there was a lot
- 30:54Speaker 3: of ups and downs and a lot of strong feelings
- 30:56Speaker 3: about it for me as well, but I had to
- 30:59Speaker 3: hold it in and they didn't want to go to
- 31:01Speaker 3: the competition, and I was like discourged. They were very discouraged,
- 31:06Speaker 3: and I just kept telling them, like, you've worked all season,
- 31:09Speaker 3: you have a great performance. My kids are hilarious. All
- 31:12Speaker 3: of their performances have been comedy. They're really funny. And
- 31:16Speaker 3: I was like, let's go. Let's enjoy the day. There's
- 31:20Speaker 3: you know, there's always like prizes at the end, there's
- 31:23Speaker 3: improv games, and let's just enjoy the experience and show
- 31:27Speaker 3: them what you did because you have this performance to
- 31:30Speaker 3: show them and it's hilarious and I think people deserve
- 31:34Speaker 3: to see that.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And we went and it went really well.
- 31:37Speaker 3: We had people laughing and people were talking about it,
- 31:40Speaker 3: so it was a success. And then we won the
- 31:45Speaker 3: most prestigious award in destination Imagination and it's called the
- 31:48Speaker 3: Da Vinci Award, and this it's huge, it's a huge trophy.
- 31:52Speaker 3: It's a big deal, and a big part of why
- 31:55Speaker 3: we want it is because we didn't give.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Up and we showed up.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Yeah, we want that last year and I cried because
- 32:03Speaker 5: it was a rough year and we had, like I said,
- 32:07Speaker 5: so many big feelings and and we came away as
- 32:11Speaker 5: victors even though our solution didn't work, because we didn't
- 32:14Speaker 5: give up.
- 32:15Speaker 1: There's a lot of life lessons here that is so
- 32:19Speaker 1: far beyond what's happening at a competition, what's happening on
- 32:23Speaker 1: a stage. It's all about perseverance, it's all about not
- 32:26Speaker 1: giving up.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and pressure's there's a lot of pressure.
- 32:32Speaker 3: And I really try to focus on my team of
- 32:35Speaker 3: you know, we don't need to place.
- 32:37Speaker 2: We don't we don't need to be in the top three.
- 32:40Speaker 3: We need to we need to enjoy the experience of
- 32:43Speaker 3: working on the challenge because there are moments when you're
- 32:46Speaker 3: working and the kids have this aha moment if something
- 32:50Speaker 3: wasn't working, and they keep trying and they tweak it,
- 32:52Speaker 3: and then there's that moment where you're like, oh my gosh.
- 32:55Speaker 2: We just made it work.
- 32:57Speaker 3: And it's it's those moments that they carry with them
- 33:00Speaker 3: that really help them want to keep trying.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And this is this is brain chemistry, This is circuitry,
- 33:09Speaker 1: absolutely firing and wiring that's going on. You can't computers
- 33:13Speaker 1: can't duplicate this correct. Yeah, you just can't. Absolutely especially
- 33:18Speaker 1: when you get a bunch of kids all going together. Yes,
- 33:22Speaker 1: and as an adult sometimes you got to step aside
- 33:27Speaker 1: just let it happen.
- 33:28Speaker 3: And you have to in Destination Imagination because the adults
- 33:31Speaker 3: cannot make any of the decisions. We can't make any
- 33:33Speaker 3: of the props, we can't tell them anything. So there's
- 33:36Speaker 3: been times where they have a particular challenge they need
- 33:39Speaker 3: to do and I know what they need to do
- 33:43Speaker 3: to make it work, like you know, I know, and
- 33:47Speaker 3: I can't tell them.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I have to let them sweat it out.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And god, that would be so hard, that would be hard,
- 33:53Speaker 1: so hard for me.
- 33:54Speaker 3: But the best part is a lot of the time
- 33:57Speaker 3: they surprise me and they do something that it wasn't
- 33:59Speaker 3: expect They make it more creative than I could have thought.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Just amazing to watch them. I'm very passionate about this.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I love it.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I think that's fantastic. And and on that note, by
- 34:14Speaker 1: the way, Jane is is saying thank you for coming
- 34:17Speaker 1: on the air. V T Direct Uh no, no v
- 34:24Speaker 1: T d I so Vermont Destination Imagination Creativity at gmail
- 34:33Speaker 1: dot com.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yes, so that's the email for Jane's d I email Okay,
- 34:38Speaker 3: So if you have questions about Vermont d I, you
- 34:41Speaker 3: could reach out to that email for sure.
- 34:44Speaker 1: V t d I Creativity at gmail dot com. You
- 34:48Speaker 1: got it. Let's I want to I want to say this,
- 34:52Speaker 1: when when you first reached out to me, I I
- 34:57Speaker 1: didn't and this happens often. I didn't. Like I said
- 35:02Speaker 1: at the beginning of this podcast, I didn't know what
- 35:05Speaker 1: you were talking about. But the fact that you you
- 35:10Speaker 1: stayed on me and you're like, look, ding ding, when
- 35:15Speaker 1: are we going on the air, when are we doing this? Uh? Uh?
- 35:18Speaker 1: Is that's impressive to me. I love that. I love
- 35:22Speaker 1: you refer to yourself as a squeaky wheel. Here's the thing.
- 35:27Speaker 1: It's like, if you got something that that's great, that's
- 35:30Speaker 1: going on, either in our small local community or in
- 35:35Speaker 1: our state that deserves recognition enough, especially if it's impacting children,
- 35:43Speaker 1: uh and young minds, you've got to be You've got
- 35:47Speaker 1: to you've got to push for it, and you've got
- 35:49Speaker 1: to make sure that you get in the props and
- 35:51Speaker 1: the recognition. Whether it's a local podcast, whether it's c
- 35:55Speaker 1: ax PTZ Digger, it doesn't matter. Everybody should be hopping
- 36:00Speaker 1: on this kind of stuff.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 3: So what we want to do in Vermont is we
- 36:05Speaker 3: want to grow our numbers. So you know, I'm here
- 36:08Speaker 3: to help get attention to my team trying to go
- 36:10Speaker 3: to Globals, but I'm also here to try to get
- 36:14Speaker 3: more people interested in Destination Imagination And do you want
- 36:18Speaker 3: to be a team manager or would your child want
- 36:20Speaker 3: to check this out? So we can get more teams
- 36:23Speaker 3: and more kids and really share the experience with more children.
- 36:31Speaker 1: We have a comment here. Wonderful program today. My twin
- 36:36Speaker 1: field daughter went to Tennessee in the middle two thousands
- 36:42Speaker 1: with Destination Imagination.
- 36:44Speaker 3: So that was for a Globals competition as well. Yeah,
- 36:47Speaker 3: that's great.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Were you on board back then that Fargo? What year
- 36:51Speaker 1: was it, middle two thousands?
- 36:54Speaker 3: No, So I started being a team manager in twenty eighteen.
- 36:58Speaker 3: I was like a coach team manager, and then I
- 37:01Speaker 3: became on my own in twenty twenty.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Do you have kids that are doing this?
- 37:04Speaker 2: So I started with kids that were doing this.
