- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody.
- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So let me ask you a question. What do you believe happinesses?
- 0:35If I asked you to define happiness, what would you come
- 0:39up with? Have you ever actually sat and
- 0:41thought about it? Have you ever actually said to
- 0:43yourself? Well, how do I personally define
- 0:46happiness? I think this question is
- 0:49critical to our well-being, because if we don't define
- 0:52happiness and we don't put ourselves in a position of
- 0:56regularly examining how we do this, what ends up happening Is
- 1:01we start to focus on as human beings?
- 1:04We all do it anyway, focus on what's wrong.
- 1:06And we say, well, I'm not happy because there's something that
- 1:09makes us unhappy or irritates us and then we end up going to a
- 1:14position of being unhappy in the world and I don't think that's
- 1:19necessary because is anybody ever happy thousand percent of
- 1:24the time? Well, at depends on how you
- 1:26define it and it everybody's got individual ways that they
- 1:30Through this and I think that we're not taught this when we're
- 1:35little I know we're not taught this one more little and I think
- 1:38that telling someone to just be happy is frustrating especially
- 1:43if you are unhappy. The last thing you want is
- 1:45someone to walk up to you and say we'll just be happy because
- 1:48if I knew how to be happy don't you think?
- 1:50I would be happy but I'm not happy.
- 1:51So therefore I am in this state of despair and discussed about
- 1:56myself because I just can't do it but you're saying so I
- 1:59thought it would be an Interesting, you know, jumping
- 2:03off point for us, if you will to look at how you personally
- 2:06defined happiness, and tell you how I look at this in my own
- 2:10world, because I've gone through this multiple times in my life
- 2:13different points in time and read endless numbers of content
- 2:18on this. And I find it really fascinating
- 2:22how certain people tell you to do things and don't understand
- 2:28where you are, where you're beginning and what's going And I
- 2:30don't want to do that to you guys ever.
- 2:32So I'm going to give you some thoughts on how I do it and you
- 2:35can see if this works for you because I personally don't
- 2:39believe that we were meant to be happy all the time.
- 2:43That does not mean we were meant to be miserable as well.
- 2:46I believe emotions are a guidance system and I believe
- 2:49that they are here to give us information and what we do with
- 2:52it pulls us back. So we are supposed to be on a
- 2:55course in our lives. Overall our course is like if
- 3:00you were Thinking of it in terms of taking a trip, you are going
- 3:03to go from Boston to La, let's say and there's an intention to
- 3:09get on that plane and fly but the whole time you're flying of
- 3:11course. Everything has to be redirected
- 3:13because of weather and conditions and all these other
- 3:16things that take place and there's constant Corrections.
- 3:18Well, that's just like our life, right?
- 3:20We're supposed to, you know, work on seeing what makes us
- 3:25Thrive, what gives us passion if you will or gives us You know,
- 3:30that feeling of I'm doing well and as we're on that course,
- 3:36happiness is part of it Dalai Lama says, the purpose of life
- 3:39is to be happy. And I believe that, I believe
- 3:42the purpose that we are here is to find our version of happy and
- 3:46to work into that every single day finding your version of
- 3:51happy. However you know because we're
- 3:55human beings and because things happen and because we develop
- 3:58with resistance, the more things that it show up in our lives
- 4:02that helped shape us, whether they're positive - doesn't
- 4:06matter. We develop with resistance and
- 4:09we resist things naturally as human beings.
- 4:12It's crazy how we do it, but we just do it.
- 4:14And will often say, wow, this started out it was a really
- 4:16crappy situation, but now I can see the benefits of it, but in
- 4:20the beginning, we resisted it, it's just our nature to be more
- 4:24cautious on them. But for me, happiness is
- 4:28something that I work towards Every single day.
- 4:32Am I happy? One thousand percent of the
- 4:35time? No, that would be silly and I
- 4:37would never say that. That's the truth.
- 4:40But what I do look for is stringing happy moments together
- 4:45and remembering those happy moments because when I can
- 4:48string them together throughout a day throughout a week, a month
- 4:54and capture things like that, then I can look back and say,
- 4:58wow, I actually do have Happy things happening.
- 5:02Even if bad things happen, and it doesn't matter who you are,
- 5:05it doesn't matter what, you know, abouty you have in your
- 5:10life, you're going to have things.
- 5:11That happen that aren't fun, that aren't good, and that's
- 5:14okay. It's totally okay.
- 5:16Because that's the Human Condition.
- 5:19That's what we do. And, you know, we all figure out
- 5:22our way through it one way or another, but stringing, these
- 5:26happy events together is a process of Training your brain
- 5:31to look for them in the first place.
- 5:34So you can start to say, okay, these micro happy events, as I
- 5:38like to call them, these tiny things that happen, you know,
- 5:41your dog is out on a walk with you and your dog happens to look
- 5:46up at you while you're walking because your dog is just here to
- 5:49remind you of how much you're loved.
- 5:50I mean, I'm convinced of that. Dogs are here to remind us.
- 5:53How much we are loved. You're walking, your dog looks
- 5:56up at you. That's a happy moment.
- 5:58You know, you're getting Additional love in that moment
- 6:01and you might not get any other unconditional love in the day,
- 6:04but from that dog, in that moment, he gave it to you.
- 6:08Did you even notice? Well, that's a question.
- 6:10Did you notice? I tend to use my camera, those
- 6:14of you who are regulars and listeners, know that I do this,
- 6:17I tend to use my camera to take pictures of little things that I
- 6:20find that are my happy moments. Flowers, butterflies, walking
- 6:26around things that are cool pictures angles of trees
- 6:29architecture. ER, anything during my day and I
- 6:33legitimately have way too many photos in my iPhoto.
- 6:36My husband would be the first one to tell you this, but they
- 6:39are for me the road map of. Did I find anything?
- 6:42You know, visually today that brought me those little moments
- 6:45of joy and I do it every day and that's why you're hearing me out
- 6:49in the chicken coop because they bring me so much joy.
- 6:51You know, I brought them out this morning, bananas and
- 6:54shredded zucchini. And you should have seen how
- 6:56excited they were. They were just going crazy and I
- 7:00know That's a joy for them. So I bring that to them and it
- 7:04brings me joy and happiness and I can string that moment
- 7:07together and at the end of the day, I have all these moments I
- 7:11can refer back to that say wow today I strung a nice thread of
- 7:16happy moments and I don't have to focus on the fact that it has
- 7:21to be 24/7 because that's ridiculous.
- 7:25It's the beginning of the school year.
- 7:26I know I'm going to have resistance and have things that
- 7:29show up with my son. Because o back to school, right?
- 7:34That's going to happen. For those of us that have kids
- 7:36that are back in school, some of them are excited, but the
- 7:38majority of them are like, well, I don't want to do this and it's
- 7:42okay because we're going to work our way through it, and we will
- 7:46find happy things, and I will say to him, tell me, something
- 7:49happy that happened today. Tell me something great that
- 7:51happened today. Give me those little threads so
- 7:53that I can start to weave something that puts people in a
- 7:57better place. I'm putting myself in a better
- 7:59place so your challenge is going to be to go out and start to
- 8:04string together. Some happy thoughts, happy
- 8:08moments, happy recognitions. Just those little tiny droplets
- 8:14and remember, don't fall yourself for not being happy all
- 8:17the time because nobody is and if they're telling you, that
- 8:20they're full of shit because they're not and it's okay.
- 8:24What we want to do is just constantly navigate Elves back
- 8:29to a place where we're neutral and where we can take in and
- 8:33where we can notice. And when we can be at peace and
- 8:35centered and choose happiness throughout it.
- 8:39Now, do I believe the purpose of life is to be happy?
- 8:43Yes, I do. Because I think that, why would
- 8:46anybody want to do anything? But that, but that is a process
- 8:51that you have to work at and work at it and work at it and
- 8:55work at. So go string, some happy
- 8:58thoughts. Us together today.
- 8:59Go find some happy moments and I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 9:03Bye.
