- 0:00Thank you. seen a lot of unexpected wins and
- 0:07successes and perks of being a podcaster, but
- 0:10today I want to touch on one that I did not see
- 0:12coming, and that is networking. Hey, it's Abby.
- 0:16Welcome to another episode of Abby the Podcast
- 0:18Lady. Super happy that you joined me today. I
- 0:21want to take you on a little trip into the past
- 0:24that's going to lead into the present. I have
- 0:27a background in radio broadcasting, and if you've
- 0:30listened to earlier episodes of the show, I might
- 0:33have mentioned that. have known since I was a
- 0:36child that I wanted to be in some sort of the
- 0:39media industry. And I really thought that being
- 0:41a radio DJ was the end all be all to what I wanted
- 0:45to do with my life. So from the ripe old age
- 0:48of eight, listening to KCLD on my boom box, I
- 0:52decided then and there I was going to be a radio
- 0:54DJ. And I actually went to college to be a radio
- 0:57DJ. I went to Brown College in Mendota Heights,
- 1:00Minnesota, which is actually a very highly esteemed
- 1:04college. producing radio DJs. Some radio legends
- 1:07came out of there. I keep saying it still exists.
- 1:09I was actually the last to graduate from there
- 1:11before it went bankrupt, but that's a story for
- 1:14another day. Being a radio DJ was all I wanted
- 1:17to do. Not to sound like I'm bragging or anything,
- 1:21but I had a natural knack for it. I took to it
- 1:24like a fish in water. When I graduated from college
- 1:27in 2015, I set a 10 -year goal for myself. I
- 1:31said, I'm going to be on 93X in Minneapolis.
- 1:34within 10 years. I had that goal in mind and
- 1:37I wasn't going to let anything stop me. And it
- 1:40just so happened that the week that I graduated
- 1:41from college. They hired me to be a DJ at 93X
- 1:45in Minneapolis. So my 10 -year goal immediately
- 1:48went out the window. But that's because the staff
- 1:51there saw potential in me. And they trained me
- 1:54to be a DJ that was up to par with their standards.
- 1:58And I absolutely loved it. It was the best. And
- 2:01I worked there for about a year and a half until
- 2:04a full -time opportunity popped up in St. Cloud,
- 2:06Minnesota. And that's where I went to be a radio
- 2:09DJ next. And I worked on the Hot AC format. I
- 2:12worked on country. I did some fill in work on
- 2:15the classic rock station. I managed the like
- 2:1980s and 90s hit station. That was really fun
- 2:22for a while. And then I kind of just outgrew
- 2:25that space. I couldn't really move up in the
- 2:27company any further than where I had reached.
- 2:30And I didn't want to. either move companies or
- 2:33move markets. I knew that St. Cloud was the place
- 2:35I wanted to be. But what was interesting about
- 2:38that is even though I was a personality in the
- 2:41market, even though I had been here for almost
- 2:43a decade, I had established myself somewhat as
- 2:46a community member, I still didn't really feel
- 2:49like I... I belonged fully in the St. Cloud area,
- 2:53which not to say I felt like I was an outcast
- 2:55or people were actively saying, you're not welcome
- 2:57here. We don't want you here. It was just more
- 2:59of a, I felt like I was just another face in
- 3:02the crowd. And when I quit at the radio station
- 3:04was when I started my podcasting journey. And
- 3:07I am eternally grateful for that. That has led
- 3:09me down some amazing roads. But I got to start
- 3:13my own podcast because my non -compete was up
- 3:15and I could start making content for myself.
- 3:18And so I started this small. town tourist. And
- 3:20what that entailed was finding different stories
- 3:23around the area, sending messages to people,
- 3:25connecting with people, helping share their stories
- 3:28with the world. And it was so much fun. I had
- 3:31such a great time making the small town tourist,
- 3:34showcasing those stories, meeting new people,
- 3:37connecting with new people. And what I didn't
- 3:39realize at the time was that was actually networking.
- 3:42That was networking for my business and for my
- 3:44brand without even really intentionally trying
- 3:47to go out and network or go to networking events.
- 3:50Like I was just meeting people, forming connections
- 3:52and sharing stories. And it was absolutely magical.
- 3:55And because I did that, I was able to start my
- 3:59own podcast production business because I would
- 4:02have people on my podcast and then they would
- 4:04go, well, I want to start a podcast. I've always
- 4:06wanted to do this. Can you help me with that?
- 4:09Of course, the answer was yes, because my favorite
- 4:11thing is to be helpful. So I ended up starting
- 4:13my podcast production business, Abby Graves Productions,
- 4:16grew it to enough clients to go full time with
- 4:19it, which is insane. And what a blessing and
- 4:21what a ride that has been. But I didn't realize
- 4:24that forming those connections and networking
- 4:26through having a podcast was going to be something
- 4:30that could launch into a full -time career for
- 4:32me and a full -time brand that I am the face
- 4:36of. And I just think that is so cool. So it has
- 4:39taken me down all these wild roads. One of my
- 4:43coolest networking things is I had Vicky from
- 4:45Vicky's Camp and Country Fest on the Small Town
- 4:48Tourist. And now I help her with her social media
- 4:50at the festival every year. And I just think
- 4:52that is so cool. All those little connections
- 4:54that can come from starting a podcast, having
- 4:57people on, talking to people that you want to
- 4:59talk to that are in your circle or you want to
- 5:02be part of their circle. It is just this amazing
- 5:05connection tool. And I didn't really realize
- 5:07just how important that was until last week when
- 5:10I was presenting at my own networking group.
- 5:12It's the Business Exchange here in St. Cloud.
- 5:14I was invited to be a part of that group in November
- 5:18of 2024. And I have just formed some really amazing
- 5:24connections from that group. And I was presenting
- 5:27this week because each week, every member gets
- 5:29a chance to give a 10 -minute presentation on
- 5:31what they do. And it was my week to present.
- 5:33I made everyone make a podcast with me, which
- 5:35they were a little reluctant, but they did a
- 5:37great job. And I got to stand up there and just
- 5:40kind of talk about what I do for a little bit.
- 5:42And I realized as I was standing there talking
- 5:44to this group that I network with every single
- 5:47week, I'm like, my podcast is really what got
- 5:50me to the point that I'm at in the St. Cloud
- 5:52community. Because even though I was a radio
- 5:55personality and I was a voice of the area, I
- 5:59didn't really feel like I was very well known
- 6:01in the area. And now that I'm a part of this
- 6:04group and I'm a part of Forum of Executive Women,
- 6:06I just keep having more and more people come
- 6:08up to me and go, oh yeah, Abby, I just feel like
- 6:10you're everywhere these days. And I just feel
- 6:12like everyone's saying your name in rooms that
- 6:14I'm in. And hopefully they're saying good things.
- 6:16But I just feel like I just have been getting
- 6:19more feedback from people going, oh yeah, Abby,
- 6:21I know Abby. She's doing this, this, this, and
- 6:23this. And she's here, here, and here. And I...
- 6:26owe it all to having a podcast. I truly do. I
- 6:30do not think that if I would have... taken the
- 6:33plunge and started the small town tourist and
- 6:35done what I wanted to do with it, that I would
- 6:38be where I'm at today. So networking is just
- 6:40one of those unexpected plot twists that I have
- 6:43gotten from having a podcast. And I really feel
- 6:46like it could be a strong tool for you as well,
- 6:49no matter the industry you want to be in. I didn't
- 6:52pinpoint an industry I wanted to be part of when
- 6:54I started the small town tourist. I just wanted
- 6:56to help share cool stories of things that weren't
- 6:59getting enough. airtime in the area. So I just
- 7:02would reach out to people and be like, hey, I
- 7:04want to chat. And they almost always say, yep,
- 7:06sure, I want to chat. I want to tell my story.
- 7:08I want this platform. So I think that if you
- 7:10are... Looking for a reason to start your podcast,
- 7:14establish yourself as the expert in your field,
- 7:16talk with other people that are like -minded
- 7:19or in the same industry as you and figure out
- 7:21the ways that you guys are doing things similarly
- 7:23or differently or just sharing ideas or even
- 7:26woes about what you go through. I think having
- 7:29a podcast is a great opportunity to do that because
- 7:32people... love talking about themselves, honestly.
- 7:35Who doesn't want to hop on someone else's show
- 7:38and share about the cool things that they're
- 7:39doing? So if you're looking for just another
- 7:42nudge to start your podcast and start that brand,
- 7:45start that business, use a podcast to tell your
- 7:48story and someone else's, networking is a great
- 7:51excuse to do it. So that's all I got for you
- 7:53this week on Abby the Podcast Lady. Just wanted
- 7:55to share some thoughts that have been bouncing
- 7:56around in my head, but networking, it's another
- 7:59reason to start a podcast. Thank you so much
- 8:00for listening. I'll catch you next week. Thank
- 8:03you.
