- 0:22SPEAKER_00: No matter what or why you write, there's a common element that ties all writers together, and it's this we're all on a journey of discovery.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: We don't just write to express what we think, we write in order to discover what we think.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: For many writers, it goes even deeper than that.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It's an itch they keep on scratching, but it never seems to quite go away.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And this itch is what we call a life theme.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's a statement or an idea that ties your body of work together.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Now, this isn't true for all writers, of course, but I believe that it is for most writers.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: We write because there's a singular theme that resonates from our souls.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: It's what you might call a golden thread that ties it all together.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And this was true of Maya Angelou.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: She said, In all my work, what I try to say is that as human beings, we are more alike than we are unalike.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: That phrase or that idea was her golden thread.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you, is there a theme or an idea that you keep coming back to?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Maybe something that you're trying to say, but you never quite feel you get it right.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: That feeling of not getting it quite right is not an indication that you're inadequate.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Instead, it's a sign that you still have more to say on that theme.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So don't be afraid of your golden thread or what you might call your life theme.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: In fact, I encourage you to lean into it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: The more that you do, the more your writing will resonate with people because it represents the truth of who you are and how you see the world.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And if you've been true to your golden thread, someday you'll be able to look back on your body of work and see how that golden thread has been woven into a stunning tapestry.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Write down a few ideas of what your golden thread as a writer might be, share it with a couple of friends, and see if they agree.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: A big thanks to today's sponsor, The Word Wizard.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: You may have written a great book, but it's not ready for publication until it's been in the hands of a master editor.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: That's why my friend Karen Hunsinger, also known as The Word Wizard, is the perfect partner to help you craft the highest quality book possible.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: A great editor doesn't just correct grammar and spelling, they also correct wordiness, shifts in tone and voice, the overuse of particular words, and they also enhance transitions, clarity, and accuracy.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I've worked with Karen many times, and she is absolutely your secret weapon for crafting an amazing book.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Make sure to visit Karen Hunsinger.com for a free sample edit.
