Latest / Not So Fast / Bills Win in OT! Ty Dunne Joins & Are the Rams in Trouble?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Patsch.
- 0:20Speaker 3: We've got overtime football, playoff baseball. Who's got it better
- 0:23Speaker 3: than us, Paul?
- 0:24Speaker 4: Nobody. We don't need sleep. Sleep's for wimps. We're going
- 0:27Speaker 4: to talk about the Brewers' victory, the Guardians' win, winless
- 0:30Speaker 4: NFL teams, but we've got to start with Monday night
- 0:32Speaker 4: football going late night.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, very late.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I want to set a Not So Fast rule on
- 0:38Speaker 3: games like this. 37-34, Bills win in overtime. You're going
- 0:41Speaker 3: to hear a lot of narratives about the Bills and
- 0:43Speaker 3: the Rams. I just want to acknowledge that either team
- 0:46Speaker 3: could have won that game. We're talking about one fingertip
- 0:49Speaker 3: blocking a field goal.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So don't read too much in the fact that Buffalo
- 0:52Speaker 2: won and L.A.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Lost.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And you are a sports writer.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You've written sports.
- 0:56Speaker 4: You know how the sports writers who were at the
- 0:57Speaker 4: game last night, they write their article whether they win
- 1:00Speaker 4: one way or the other team wins. So, like, this
- 1:02Speaker 4: coin flip could have gone either way, and we'd be
- 1:04Speaker 4: talking about, oh, the Rams are back, settled everything down,
- 1:07Speaker 4: all is well.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, the Rams, their problem now, they are 2-3,
- 1:10Speaker 2: so home field is going to be tough.
- 1:12Speaker 3: But I thought they played well. Both teams have flaws,
- 1:14Speaker 3: but they're both Super Bowl favorites.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't know which. Is there either team that you
- 1:18Speaker 2: look at last night that you were really worried about something?
- 1:21Speaker 4: Well, it was a slow start for both teams. The
- 1:23Speaker 4: other one really got rolling in the second half and
- 1:25Speaker 4: the fourth quarter is awesome. The passing game for the
- 1:28Speaker 4: Rams was fantastic. Puka Nakua is uncoverable.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 1:31Speaker 4: He was targeted 24 times, 17 catches. He's a sure thing.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And everything happened in the fourth quarter. Now, the Rams,
- 1:38Speaker 4: they didn't run the ball much at all, and they
- 1:40Speaker 4: don't have a quarterback who can run. So that would
- 1:41Speaker 4: be the thing that bothers me about the Rams going forward,
- 1:44Speaker 4: the lack of running game when they have two good
- 1:46Speaker 4: running backs.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:47Speaker 3: And, yeah, obviously they scored 34 points, easily could have
- 1:51Speaker 3: won the game. I want to get into a question
- 1:53Speaker 3: about the late-game time management. So Sean McVay, at the
- 1:56Speaker 3: end of the game, third and five, decides to run
- 1:59Speaker 3: the ball into the line. That leaves them a 40-something-yard
- 2:02Speaker 3: field goal that they missed. McVay, after the game, regretted
- 2:06Speaker 3: that decision to run the ball there. Their offense looked great,
- 2:10Speaker 3: Puka Nakua uncoverable, and yet they did a conservative play.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Did you have a problem with that?
- 2:15Speaker 4: I did because he does not have a great kicker.
- 2:17Speaker 4: He doesn't have a Brandon Aubrey, a Justin Tucker from
- 2:19Speaker 4: five years ago, whoever you want to say, Cam Little.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Harrison Mevis already had a miss. And the other one,
- 2:26Speaker 4: the block kick is not on him. It's on the blocker.
- 2:28Speaker 4: But that's a situation where I would trust my offense
- 2:30Speaker 4: more than my kicker. I'd try to get 10 more yards.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Why not?
- 2:33Speaker 2: All right, let me give you a theory.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I think Sean McVay was a little spooked by a
- 2:36Speaker 3: few things. I think he watched football yesterday. And he
- 2:39Speaker 3: saw Cam Scadaboo in the same situation fumble the ball
- 2:42Speaker 3: for the Giants when they're trying to improve their field
- 2:45Speaker 3: goal position.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Then he saw the Bills.
- 2:47Speaker 3: fumble away a chance to hit a field goal as
- 2:49Speaker 3: well when James Cook just fumbled.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I think coaches are spooked generally in the NFL. They
- 2:55Speaker 2: don't know how to do the end of the game anymore.
- 2:56Speaker 4: And I get what you're saying. I'm going to back
- 2:58Speaker 4: up this warm take by you. He had the chance
- 3:00Speaker 4: to watch football on Sunday and saw how these games
- 3:02Speaker 4: played out, or he watched the highlights of it. All right,
- 3:05Speaker 4: let's see what he had to say. Here is Sean
- 3:07Speaker 4: McVay after the game blaming himself and maybe another person
- 3:09Speaker 4: or two.
- 3:10Speaker 1: In the kicking game, especially with our PAT field goal
- 3:14Speaker 1: not even close to good enough, it cost us the
- 3:16Speaker 1: game tonight. Yeah, I'm going to evaluate everything.
- 3:21Speaker 5: With the third and five play, was there anything?
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what?
- 3:24Speaker 1: If I would have known.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I wish I would have had a better play call
- 3:28Speaker 1: and gone for it. Got it a lot tighter. I'm
- 3:30Speaker 1: sick right now with myself. Um, and I'm so proud
- 3:33Speaker 1: of that group. Um, you know, this is the, this
- 3:36Speaker 1: is the tough part of sports, but I'm proud of
- 3:38Speaker 1: that team. I'm proud of the way that we battled
- 3:40Speaker 1: and I'm sick that we came up short and, um,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know, I'll be, uh, I'll be regretting, you know,
- 3:46Speaker 1: kicking that and not having a better call to be
- 3:48Speaker 1: able to go for it on third down and go
- 3:50Speaker 1: to fourth or whatever it was. And, um, That's on me.
- 3:53Speaker 1: This is the one.
- 3:54Speaker 6: This stings.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And it's going to hurt, but we can't afford to
- 3:57Speaker 1: let it. We can't let this team beat us twice.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And we're going to have to regroup and reset ourselves.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And it's been a while since I've been this pissed
- 4:04Speaker 1: after a game, too.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I think this is a really interesting clip from a
- 4:07Speaker 4: couple angles. The fact that he, in the moment, not
- 4:10Speaker 4: a day after the game, says, I made the wrong call.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I crossed on myself, which backs up your point.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, also, by the way, I forgot.
- 4:16Speaker 3: You know one of the reasons that Jaden Daniels might
- 4:18Speaker 3: have let the clock run out in the Commander's Giants game?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Because there was somebody on the Washington coaching staff who
- 4:24Speaker 3: thought maybe we can get five.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yards on the next play and have a better lie
- 4:28Speaker 2: for the field goal.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So I think it's hard. We rip the coaches if
- 4:32Speaker 3: the game goes one way, and we praise them. But
- 4:34Speaker 3: it could have gone, anything could have happened. They could
- 4:36Speaker 3: have fumbled the ball just like the Bills did.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It does feel like it's analytics versus gut. Sean McVay
- 4:40Speaker 4: probably uses analytics 90% of the time, and he probably
- 4:43Speaker 4: used it here. He probably was told, okay, run it
- 4:46Speaker 4: up the middle. You set up your guy for a
- 4:47Speaker 4: field goal, which... here comes Greg Rousseau, not so fast.
- 4:51Speaker 4: It didn't work out. The other thing I loved about
- 4:53Speaker 4: this clip by Sean McVay, he specifically blamed his kicker
- 4:57Speaker 4: and his kicking game. I don't think you do that
- 4:59Speaker 4: with a middle linebacker. I don't think you do that
- 5:01Speaker 4: with a quarterback or any position player. But I think
- 5:04Speaker 4: with a kicker, this is not going to go over
- 5:06Speaker 4: that well, but I don't think coaches and players look
- 5:08Speaker 4: at kickers and punters as coaches, as players. They look
- 5:12Speaker 4: at them as part of the team, an important cog,
- 5:15Speaker 4: but like, They're a kicker. It's like we did all
- 5:17Speaker 4: this work and the kicker blew it.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I totally agree.
- 5:19Speaker 3: And also, too, the kicker looks shaky all night long.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Every time they cut to him on the sideline, I'm like,
- 5:24Speaker 3: are you sure that this guy's got it in him
- 5:26Speaker 3: to hit the game winner? So, by the way, this
- 5:28Speaker 3: happened in the Niners a couple years ago. There are
- 5:30Speaker 3: teams that are awesome on both sides of the ball
- 5:32Speaker 3: but cannot get their special teams fixed. And it's been
- 5:35Speaker 3: several years for the Rams. I worry this is their
- 5:37Speaker 3: Achilles heel.
- 5:38Speaker 4: All right, let's get to the Bills side of this.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Josh Allen passed for 210, ran for 121. Not a
- 5:41Speaker 4: big surprise there. Their kicker missed an extra point. They
- 5:46Speaker 4: got it done a little more on defense, but they
- 5:48Speaker 4: didn't stop Matt Stafford at any point in the game.
- 5:50Speaker 4: They didn't stop Puka. How do you feel about the
- 5:51Speaker 4: Bills with the win? Whether they won or lost, how
- 5:54Speaker 4: do you feel.
- 5:54Speaker 2: About the Bills?
- 5:54Speaker 3: I feel like this is the same Buffalo Bills team
- 5:56Speaker 3: we've been watching for five years. The same team that
- 5:58Speaker 3: let the Chiefs go down and score with 13 seconds left.
- 6:01Speaker 2: There's no defense, and there's Josh Allen's legs.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And by the way, of that 210 yards passing, a
- 6:06Speaker 3: big chunk of that was the overtime reception.
- 6:08Speaker 2: So I just think that they rely.
- 6:10Speaker 3: So much on him to be Superman. I don't know
- 6:13Speaker 3: if that formula is going to get them where they
- 6:15Speaker 3: want to be. Because the only thing left to do
- 6:16Speaker 3: right now, and we're going to hear this later from
- 6:18Speaker 3: Scott Van Pelt, the only thing left to do is
- 6:20Speaker 3: win a Super Bowl.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:21Speaker 4: But the Bills, though, they do have a running game,
- 6:23Speaker 4: but then James Cook fumbles twice. The same guy punched
- 6:26Speaker 4: out the ball twice. They kind of recovered their own.
- 6:29Speaker 4: And then they have Greg Rousseau, who's a very good
- 6:31Speaker 4: defensive end. But they don't have anyone else to go
- 6:33Speaker 4: with him. They don't have the defensive backs that they
- 6:35Speaker 4: had 10 years ago.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Well, there's injuries all over the backfield. Totally.
- 6:38Speaker 4: But they keep teams in game so often. They have
- 6:41Speaker 4: so few clean wins where it's like 35 to 10.
- 6:44Speaker 4: You just don't see those.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Well, we're going to talk to Ty Dunn from Go
- 6:48Speaker 3: Long TD, who covers the Bills closely. My question is,
- 6:52Speaker 3: whatever was wrong with Sean McDermott as head coach, have
- 6:55Speaker 3: they really fixed that with Joe Brady?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Because it doesn't look like it. The Bills are good.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong. They're 4-1 against a tough schedule.
- 7:02Speaker 2: That's all good.
- 7:03Speaker 3: But have they figured out things that have kept them
- 7:05Speaker 3: from winning a Super Bowl? And last night, even with
- 7:08Speaker 3: a win, I'm not so sure.
- 7:09Speaker 4: And you've said this before. Josh Allen cleans up everything.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:12Speaker 4: When a play breaks down, Matthew Stafford's not running. Aaron
- 7:14Speaker 4: Rodgers isn't running. Kirk Cousins barely runs anymore. Those guys
- 7:18Speaker 4: are statues. But when Josh Allen rolls out to his left,
- 7:22Speaker 4: it's over. And we're going to talk more about him
- 7:23Speaker 4: as a runner, but He's not going down. He could
- 7:26Speaker 4: have gone down five yards earlier. He was already well
- 7:28Speaker 4: past the first down line when he did this.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, here's the problem, though, Paul. Again, we're
- 7:33Speaker 2: talking about mobile quarterbacks.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Mobile quarterbacks always win in the regular season, but they
- 7:37Speaker 3: don't win in the playoffs because you can scheme against them.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And the Rams, obviously, whatever the meeting was, what are
- 7:42Speaker 3: they going to do about Josh Allen's legs? Everyone skipped
- 7:45Speaker 3: that because they had no plan last night. He did
- 7:47Speaker 3: whatever he wanted.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And I get it. He's hard to stop. But how come, again,
- 7:51Speaker 2: why doesn't that get them to the Super Bowls? This
- 7:54Speaker 2: is it.
- 7:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Let's get to helmet stickers for Monday Night Football. You
- 7:56Speaker 4: want to go first?
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll go with the Bills offensive line.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I know that this is supposed to be an individual award,
- 8:01Speaker 3: but they allowed one sack on the game and had
- 8:04Speaker 3: over 230 yards rushing. So Deion Dawkins and the crew
- 8:08Speaker 3: get my sticker. It's a very good unit, especially, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 3: you know, James Cook is coming at you and they
- 8:13Speaker 3: still block effectively.
- 8:14Speaker 4: What's the not so fast policy on a helmet sticker
- 8:16Speaker 4: for a player on a losing team? What do we
- 8:18Speaker 4: think on that? Because I was going to go Puka,
- 8:20Speaker 4: but I'm not going Puka because it was a great
- 8:22Speaker 4: reminder game for Puka. Don't forget, I'm as good as
- 8:24Speaker 4: anybody in the league. Greg Rousseau, we talked about to him,
- 8:27Speaker 4: the very good defensive lineman for the Bills. Him blocking
- 8:29Speaker 4: that kick in overtime was fantastic. Usually you don't see
- 8:32Speaker 4: star defensive players also on special teams. Sometimes they take
- 8:35Speaker 4: those guys off in those situations. Great job by him.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And you know what's interesting about him? He's the guy.
- 8:40Speaker 3: They need somebody this year to step up and be
- 8:43Speaker 3: a factor on defense. And Greg Russo, who I think
- 8:46Speaker 3: he was a first-round pick, he's finally delivering to be
- 8:48Speaker 3: that guy. You know, you can have a team. It's
- 8:50Speaker 3: like the Lions with Aiden Hutchinson. You need at least
- 8:53Speaker 3: one guy. And right now that's all they got.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And they need Miles Garrett back. The Rams sure do.
- 8:57Speaker 4: All right, let's get to baseball last night. Brewers over
- 9:00Speaker 4: the Dodgers 7-4. The Brewers are now up 2-0 in
- 9:03Speaker 4: that series. They knock out Yamamoto. It's funny that my
- 9:06Speaker 4: warm take yesterday is that Yamamoto for the Dodgers, he
- 9:08Speaker 4: goes deep into the games and helps the team. It
- 9:11Speaker 4: went the opposite last night. They worked Yamamoto. He was
- 9:13Speaker 4: at 75 pitches in the second inning, including Jake Bowers,
- 9:17Speaker 4: a 12-pitch at-bat to get a walk and load the bases. Now,
- 9:20Speaker 4: usually walks, a guy fighting for a walk is not
- 9:23Speaker 4: that awesome. This changed the entire game. This has just
- 9:28Speaker 4: fallen off, fallen off, fallen off. And working the count
- 9:30Speaker 4: with Yamamoto, he helped knock him out in the second inning.
- 9:34Speaker 4: The Dodgers now have to go to their very good
- 9:35Speaker 4: bullpen and use seven different pitchers. But that set the tone.
- 9:39Speaker 4: The other thing that set the tone is the Brewers'
- 9:41Speaker 4: second through fifth hitters, eight hits, seven RBI last night,
- 9:45Speaker 4: great win for them.
- 9:46Speaker 2: So here's the issue with this.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Usually the formula is you wear out the starter by
- 9:50Speaker 3: taking pitches.
- 9:51Speaker 2: That's what the Dodgers do.
- 9:53Speaker 3: But now in today's baseball, the bullpens are so good
- 9:56Speaker 3: that teams don't care.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Like, wear us out. You know, we have the Miz.
- 10:00Speaker 3: We'll take him out in the fifth inning and put
- 10:01Speaker 3: in our bullpen. The Dodgers can't touch Milwaukee's bullpen. So
- 10:05Speaker 3: they usually wear out the starter and they have, they've
- 10:07Speaker 3: totally gotten to the starters, but it makes no difference
- 10:09Speaker 3: because they can't touch the bullpen.
- 10:10Speaker 4: And it felt like a win. You saw the Brewers
- 10:12Speaker 4: players when they went to break, when Yamamoto gets pulled,
- 10:15Speaker 4: they were like, That's hard to do. He doesn't get
- 10:17Speaker 4: pulled in the second inning.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Right, but the opposite, though, the trend in baseball is
- 10:21Speaker 3: that you don't want to get to the bullpen now.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Guys can't hit bullpen. The Dodgers' bullpen is not as
- 10:26Speaker 2: good as Milwaukee's.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I mean, basically, I think Milwaukee's, they're strong favorites to
- 10:30Speaker 3: win it all now, or at least they're favorites.
- 10:32Speaker 2: What is going to be the number one factor? Their bullpen,
- 10:34Speaker 2: where the Dodgers' bullpen has not stepped up.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Okay, one of the big topics of the postseason, especially
- 10:37Speaker 4: for the Dodgers, is Shohei Otani hitting. 150 in the postseason.
- 10:41Speaker 2: In the 2025 playoffs.
- 10:44Speaker 4: He was walked 17 times and nine intentional walks. They
- 10:48Speaker 4: didn't want him getting a swing off. Now it's like
- 10:52Speaker 4: he's chasing pitches. He's fouling things off all over the place.
- 10:55Speaker 4: He has become a detriment to his team the past
- 10:57Speaker 4: two weeks. Is he benchable?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Oh, my God, yes. Really?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I would bench him in a second.
- 11:04Speaker 4: How would you do so if you're Dave Roberts? How
- 11:05Speaker 4: do you do that with the best hitter on the planet?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Say, Shohei, here's the bench.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Well, he's already moved him down in the lineup. That
- 11:13Speaker 3: was a pretty radical move. And he's obviously not healthy.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I don't know if it's the bicep or the knee.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Something's wrong with Shohei, so try something else. Your offense
- 11:22Speaker 3: is so impotent right now. They can't get anything going.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I wonder, though, if it could blow up in your face.
- 11:27Speaker 4: If somehow you bench Otani, and in that game you
- 11:29Speaker 4: hit even less, which is not possible.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 11:32Speaker 3: What's the downside here? Shohei does not look threatened. He's
- 11:35Speaker 3: hit one homer since mid-August.
- 11:37Speaker 4: I know, but I think bailing on someone like that,
- 11:39Speaker 4: you can't expect him to take himself out of the game.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Stars don't do that.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Well, he has actually said that I told the manager
- 11:44Speaker 3: to put me down in the lineup, so he's headed
- 11:46Speaker 3: that direction.
- 11:47Speaker 2: You know, you keep going down, eventually you're out.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Why not try the young kid, DePaula, give him three
- 11:53Speaker 3: at-bats and then pinch-hit show?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Something, some kind of spark.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Yeah, the pinch-hit thing is interesting, but we're going to
- 11:58Speaker 4: see how that plays out tomorrow night. But Otani, it
- 12:01Speaker 4: is fascinating because last year in the playoffs, They were
- 12:03Speaker 4: just parking him at first base. They're like, we don't
- 12:05Speaker 4: want this guy anywhere near a quality at-bat.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Oh, man. Who would have predicted this? In fact, the
- 12:10Speaker 2: whole Dodgers lineup is disappointing. All right.
- 12:12Speaker 3: We have a lot more football and baseball to get to.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Coming up next, let's talk a little Arch Manning. Steve
- 12:18Speaker 3: Tarchese steps up for his quarterback.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Do you agree with him? That's next. Not so fast.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Oof.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Dodgers. You would keep him in there.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I think I would because play the odds of him
- 12:30Speaker 4: breaking out. The odds of him breaking out because... I
- 12:33Speaker 4: bet against him. Back on Not So Fast, passing Pearl
- 12:39Speaker 4: off here. Here's a little coffee for you. A little espresso,
- 12:41Speaker 4: as they say. Billy Contreras, he is having no problem
- 12:44Speaker 4: with the Dodgers pitching. Whatever pitchers they bring in, he's raking,
- 12:48Speaker 4: as they say. High socks, got to love it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Does he go by Billy?
- 12:51Speaker 4: He does not.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Okay.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Good friends call him Bill. But William Contreras dominating. A
- 12:56Speaker 4: lot of energy. Big energy guy. Big clubhouse guy.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I feel like all the brewers are like
- 13:00Speaker 2: this right now. They're all big energy guys.
- 13:02Speaker 4: They're all gritty and gutty?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and it feels like that's like a team. They
- 13:05Speaker 2: all love each other.
- 13:06Speaker 4: You said, I want to get you on record. You're
- 13:08Speaker 4: not saying this one's done, is it?
- 13:09Speaker 2: Are you? Oh, yeah, yeah. No, this is done. Dodgers
- 13:11Speaker 2: are done.
- 13:12Speaker 3: The Dodgers at the plate have no life whatsoever. I
- 13:15Speaker 3: don't know how you resuscitate.
- 13:16Speaker 4: So you're judging it more so by their performance. You
- 13:19Speaker 4: don't say done.
- 13:20Speaker 6: As compared to what?
- 13:21Speaker 4: Well, I guess historically you stay with the Dodgers because
- 13:24Speaker 4: of the talent on the roster.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but you see the talent is not delivering at all.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And that lineup just doesn't feel scary right now. Without
- 13:31Speaker 3: Shohei being Shohei and without really Mookie Betts being scary—
- 13:35Speaker 3: Who is really freaking you out? Is Kiki Hernandez going
- 13:38Speaker 3: to show up all of a sudden and save the
- 13:40Speaker 3: day like he usually does?
- 13:41Speaker 2: Possibly. But I think the bats have been dead for
- 13:43Speaker 2: a while.
- 13:44Speaker 4: A little bulletin board material from Dave Roberts. He's going
- 13:47Speaker 4: to say, hey, guys, look what Pearl said about you.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Not so fast. All right, it's time for warm takes here.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Let's get some warm takes going. I'm going to go first, Pearl.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Let's warm it up in here just a little bit.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Josh Allen may go down as the greatest running quarterback
- 14:00Speaker 4: of all time, which is interesting because he's not a
- 14:02Speaker 4: running quarterback. He's a quarterback who runs. He is not
- 14:06Speaker 4: that far behind guys like Mike Vick, Cam Newton, and
- 14:09Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson on the all-time rushing list. I prorated his numbers.
- 14:12Speaker 4: It's a big word, prorated. But he needs about five
- 14:15Speaker 4: more seasons to be in that 6,000-plus yards. Now, Lamar
- 14:19Speaker 4: Jackson is still playing, so he'll up that number. My
- 14:21Speaker 4: guess is Josh Allen will finish second all-time in quarterback
- 14:24Speaker 4: rushing yards. He is going to be first all-time in
- 14:27Speaker 4: quarterback touchdown runs. He right now is in the top
- 14:30Speaker 4: 20 of career touchdown runs, and that's including running backs.
- 14:34Speaker 4: He's going to be up there. Based off his pace,
- 14:36Speaker 4: especially his recent pace with quarterback sneaks at the goal line,
- 14:40Speaker 4: he will be top five in rushing touchdowns in NFL
- 14:42Speaker 4: history with running backs, not just quarterbacks. But what's interesting
- 14:46Speaker 4: is no one calls him a running quarterback. They call
- 14:48Speaker 4: him a quarterback. He also runs very well. I saved
- 14:51Speaker 4: that term running quarterback for guys like Vic who ran first,
- 14:55Speaker 4: passed second. Cam Newton, for a big chunk of his career,
- 14:58Speaker 4: was run first, and then he became a great passer
- 15:00Speaker 4: for a couple years before he was injured. I go
- 15:02Speaker 4: back to a guy named Randall Cunningham. Randall Cunningham started...
- 15:05Speaker 4: from your Eagles pro-off, as a runner, and then he
- 15:08Speaker 4: became a great passer, and he became, for a while there, indefensible.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Because when you could pass and run, they got nothing
- 15:14Speaker 4: to do. If you look at Steve Young, he was
- 15:16Speaker 4: a very good running quarterback, and he was a great
- 15:18Speaker 4: passing quarterback. There was a time for about eight years
- 15:21Speaker 4: where Steve Young, I thought, was the best player in
- 15:22Speaker 4: the entire league, and probably really underrated career-wise. But what's
- 15:26Speaker 4: interesting about Josh Allen is he runs a bit recklessly,
- 15:30Speaker 4: and when I say a bit, a lot recklessly, and
- 15:31Speaker 4: he never gets hurt. He's played 16 or more games
- 15:34Speaker 4: every season of his career, except his rookie year when
- 15:36Speaker 4: he wasn't starting because they were ramping him up. He
- 15:39Speaker 4: said to SVP last night that if he's going to
- 15:41Speaker 4: get hit, he wants to initiate the hit and lower
- 15:44Speaker 4: his shoulder and hit the defender. He doesn't want to
- 15:46Speaker 4: be in that prone position or that layback slide position
- 15:48Speaker 4: and get his head taken off. He wants to initiate
- 15:50Speaker 4: the hit and control where he gets hit on his body.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Five years ago, you'd have probably said, hey, Josh Allen,
- 15:56Speaker 4: stop running. It's working. And they have no way to
- 15:58Speaker 4: win without him doing that. But there are some guys
- 16:01Speaker 4: in this league who are... Pass first, run as well,
- 16:04Speaker 4: like peak Cunningham, peak Steve Young. Josh Allen is in
- 16:07Speaker 4: that category now.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you to defend your take here.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Why is Josh Allen a better running quarterback, I guess,
- 16:13Speaker 3: than Lamar Jackson?
- 16:15Speaker 4: I think he's equal. I think they run differently. Lamar
- 16:18Speaker 4: is more slippery.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Lamar's a better runner.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Lamar has more juke in his runs. Josh is
- 16:22Speaker 4: like a truck going downhill that you don't want any
- 16:25Speaker 4: part of.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And I would argue Lamar Jackson is catching up to
- 16:28Speaker 3: Josh in the passing area. I think Lamar Jackson, if
- 16:31Speaker 3: he could ever stay healthy, would have more yards than
- 16:35Speaker 3: Josh Allen.
- 16:35Speaker 4: It is almost like a preference. Which style do you
- 16:37Speaker 4: like better? Because Lamar Jackson, he's had 41 passing touchdowns.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Yeah, no, but Lamar Jackson's passing yards are going like this,
- 16:43Speaker 3: and Josh Allen's, ironically, are kind of going like this.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Last night you saw it, Josh Allen barely threw the
- 16:48Speaker 3: ball at all. I think he's redefined himself.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But again, I get back to this, cannot win the
- 16:53Speaker 2: Super Bowl.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Drake May was a great runner last year until it
- 16:55Speaker 3: came to the playoffs and everyone game-planned for him.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I do love that the Bills have a running game
- 16:59Speaker 4: besides Josh Allen. I wish they had DJ more healthy
- 17:01Speaker 4: because they keep showing shots of him at the sidelines.
- 17:03Speaker 4: in a polo shirt.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Right, last night they missed these.
- 17:05Speaker 4: They missed him like crazy.
- 17:06Speaker 2: But I think, and I argue with our.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Producer Scott Messina about this, come playoff time, you're willing
- 17:10Speaker 3: to blow up your whole scheme to stop a running quarterback.
- 17:13Speaker 3: That's why Josh Allen can't win at the highest level,
- 17:15Speaker 3: and that's why Lamar Jackson can't win.
- 17:16Speaker 2: You're not going to do it in a week five
- 17:18Speaker 2: inter-conference game.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Are you warm taking me back?
- 17:20Speaker 2: I'm just saying, no, no, I agree with you.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I didn't realize that Josh Allen was that high, but
- 17:24Speaker 3: I don't know that even being the best running quarterback
- 17:26Speaker 3: of all time is going to win you a Super Bowl.
- 17:28Speaker 4: You know, a lot of these touchdowns are based off
- 17:29Speaker 4: the quarterback sneak and how the quarterback sneak is at
- 17:31Speaker 4: the prime. He hawks a lot of quarterback sneak touchdowns
- 17:35Speaker 4: at the goal line.
- 17:35Speaker 2: That's like Jalen Hurts gets a million touchdowns for the Eagles. Right.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I just wonder.
- 17:40Speaker 3: He might be the best running quarterback of all time
- 17:43Speaker 3: and not have a ring to show for him, which
- 17:44Speaker 3: is interesting.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I'm going to go to college football. Let's talk Arch Manning. Yesterday,
- 17:49Speaker 3: Texas head coach Steve Sarkeesian. said basically if his name
- 17:53Speaker 3: was Joe Smith, then nobody would have a problem with
- 17:55Speaker 3: Arch Manning. Now, I would say 99.8% of the media
- 17:59Speaker 3: disagreed with him. I am in that 0.2%. He is
- 18:03Speaker 3: absolutely right. There are so many people who comment on
- 18:05Speaker 3: Arch Manning who do not actually watch Texas football.
- 18:07Speaker 2: There are so many bigger issues with this team than
- 18:10Speaker 2: Arch Manning.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Now, did Arch Manning play well in the loss to Oklahoma?
- 18:14Speaker 5: No.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Did he make a crucial mistake at the end of
- 18:16Speaker 2: the game? Absolutely.
- 18:18Speaker 3: But I think we put such expectations on a college
- 18:21Speaker 3: quarterback when the truth is every college quarterback is flawed. Now,
- 18:25Speaker 3: the problem with Arch is the hype ball. Everyone expects
- 18:27Speaker 3: him to be Peyton or Eli. Maybe, but in college,
- 18:31Speaker 3: Eli wasn't that great, and Payne never won a national title,
- 18:34Speaker 3: and I believe did not win the Heisman. Arch has
- 18:37Speaker 3: done a lot of good things at Texas. They've beat
- 18:39Speaker 3: a lot of outstanding teams. They beat Ohio State. They
- 18:41Speaker 3: won at Tennessee this year. I heard an interesting stat.
- 18:45Speaker 3: That was the first loss on Saturday on Texas soil
- 18:47Speaker 3: for Arch Manning.
- 18:48Speaker 2: They'd been 11-1 in their last 12 games.
- 18:51Speaker 3: So he has won. My issues with Texas are much
- 18:54Speaker 3: deeper than Arch Manning. Arch is by far not perfect.
- 18:57Speaker 3: The run game is still terrible. Bruce Feldman from The
- 18:59Speaker 3: Athletic was on our show yesterday and said they still
- 19:01Speaker 3: can't run the ball in Texas. And they spent more
- 19:04Speaker 3: money on running backs in O-line than pretty much anybody.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Steve Sarkeesian seems to be having some communication problems with
- 19:09Speaker 3: his team, which is unusual because he's been flawless throughout
- 19:13Speaker 3: his career as an offensive coordinator. Now all of a
- 19:15Speaker 3: sudden his offense is bogged down. So I think Arch
- 19:18Speaker 3: has not played like a number one overall pick, but
- 19:20Speaker 3: he's not played like a seventh round pick.
- 19:22Speaker 2: And it seems like everyone goes black or white, Paul.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Remember last year the Athletic called him college football's first
- 19:28Speaker 3: major bust? And then what did Arch do? He basically
- 19:31Speaker 3: ran off eight wins in a row. So I think
- 19:33Speaker 3: Arch Manning, the conversation has to slow down. Not so fast.
- 19:37Speaker 2: He has not been terrible. He certainly hasn't been great.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But everyone talks about Arch Manning like it has to
- 19:42Speaker 3: be Peyton Manning or he's awful. So I think we
- 19:45Speaker 3: need a middle ground and we need to be realistic
- 19:47Speaker 3: about who this Texas team is.
- 19:49Speaker 4: That is a great take. I'm going Kornheiser taking off
- 19:51Speaker 4: the glasses. There's so many layers to this.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You go back.
- 19:54Speaker 4: The media does this to itself and does this to
- 19:56Speaker 4: certain athletes. They over-covered Arch Manning in high school because
- 19:59Speaker 4: they wanted him to be the next thing. And then
- 20:01Speaker 4: when he didn't play at Texas, like, what's wrong with
- 20:03Speaker 4: Arch Manning? He can't get on the field. You covered him.
- 20:06Speaker 4: You declared him the best thing since sliced bread. And
- 20:08Speaker 4: then when he doesn't play well, the media who, like
- 20:10Speaker 4: you said, barely watches his games, they say he's a
- 20:13Speaker 4: bust or not that great. He's doing exactly what he's
- 20:15Speaker 4: supposed to do, and he's doing a great player. Eli's
- 20:19Speaker 4: junior year at Ole Miss, he was good. He was
- 20:22Speaker 4: not great. His senior year, he did really well. The
- 20:24Speaker 4: other thing with Arch Manning is he's content. And people
- 20:27Speaker 4: use him for clicks. Yes, including us. No, I would
- 20:30Speaker 4: say we're giving it proper perspective here. He is a
- 20:32Speaker 4: good college quarterback. But I think I said earlier on
- 20:34Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick Show, the NFL teams look at him
- 20:37Speaker 4: as a Manning family brand. And that brand is a
- 20:40Speaker 4: safe pick for the top 10 picks in the NFL draft.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Is he the best quarterback in college football performance-wise?
- 20:45Speaker 3: No.
- 20:46Speaker 4: That's an easy thing to say. Is he not good
- 20:49Speaker 4: and not good for his team?
- 20:50Speaker 2: No.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Anyone who says that clearly isn't watching his games as well.
- 20:53Speaker 4: He is a very good college quarterback who hasn't gotten
- 20:55Speaker 4: over the hump yet. But people in the, not so
- 20:58Speaker 4: much the media, but social media, like to use his
- 21:02Speaker 4: name and use his to have extreme takes that aren't
- 21:04Speaker 4: based off anything.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Let me give you one comparison. Georgia beats Alabama 20-17.
- 21:10Speaker 3: If Texas had won that game, no matter which side,
- 21:13Speaker 3: they would have criticized Arch.
- 21:14Speaker 2: He can only score 20 points. He can only score
- 21:16Speaker 2: 17 points.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Keelan Russell did basically nothing in that game, and nobody's
- 21:20Speaker 3: criticizing him. Arch is always a magnet for criticism. I
- 21:25Speaker 3: think it's completely unfair. Now, would I take him number
- 21:27Speaker 3: one overall because of what you just said with the brand?
- 21:29Speaker 2: No, I would not.
- 21:30Speaker 3: He's not playing that well. He's not processing perfectly. But
- 21:34Speaker 3: that being said, you're right. He's not going to fall
- 21:36Speaker 3: that far.
- 21:36Speaker 4: I think NFL teams and general managers look at his
- 21:39Speaker 4: last name as a safe pick. I go back to,
- 21:41Speaker 4: and I'm comparing a different position, when Chris Long was
- 21:43Speaker 4: the number one pick out of Virginia at defensive end,
- 21:45Speaker 4: people were like, wow, he's not the best defensive end
- 21:47Speaker 4: in college football. But the Howie Long brand and Chris
- 21:50Speaker 4: Long He had a very good NFL career, Chris Long.
- 21:53Speaker 4: And some people sign up for that. Because when you're
- 21:55Speaker 4: at the draft, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Arch
- 21:58Speaker 4: Manning will be drafted in the top ten. I would
- 22:00Speaker 4: bet anything on it. And some team is going to
- 22:02Speaker 4: be like, well, he may not be great. Eli was
- 22:04Speaker 4: not a great NFL quarterback.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Well, remember Eli's draft. He was with Phillip Rivers and
- 22:08Speaker 3: Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger seemed to have a lot more talent.
- 22:11Speaker 3: And he fell to 11. Phillip Rivers went four. And
- 22:14Speaker 3: Eli went one. I'm wondering out loud, Paul, if Arch
- 22:18Speaker 3: Manning's a top ten pick, why not make him the
- 22:20Speaker 3: number one pick?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Well, it depends which team has number one. We'll get
- 22:23Speaker 4: to that. My next warm take, and this goes to, oh,
- 22:26Speaker 4: I've got to go back to this. I'm sorry. This
- 22:27Speaker 4: goes back to the debacle at the end of the
- 22:29Speaker 4: Giants-Commanders game in overtime on Sunday. I'm curious how long
- 22:33Speaker 4: this debacle lasts. We spent a lot of time yesterday.
- 22:35Speaker 4: It's spilling in today, even on this show. Jaden Daniels
- 22:38Speaker 4: runs the ball. The clock runs out. The Commanders lose.
- 22:41Speaker 4: National TV, overtime. Dan Quinn says, blame me. Jaden Daniels says,
- 22:46Speaker 4: blame them, then blame me, and then himself. But if
- 22:49Speaker 4: the Commanders lose their next few games, this is going
- 22:51Speaker 4: to be the stamp moment of their season. And they're
- 22:55Speaker 4: 1-3-1 right now. They have the Eagles, Rams, and then
- 22:59Speaker 4: the Giants again, which makes it even worse. So if
- 23:01Speaker 4: they continue to lose, this story is going to get
- 23:04Speaker 4: bigger and bigger, and Dan Quinn will suffer for it.
- 23:06Speaker 4: If they win their next two games somehow over the
- 23:08Speaker 4: Eagles and the Rams, or they have the 49ers as well. 49ers, Eagles, Rams, Giants.
- 23:13Speaker 4: That's a tough slate. If they somehow beat the 49ers,
- 23:16Speaker 4: it goes away. But this play now becomes... a badge
- 23:19Speaker 4: on Dan Quinn, on Jaden Daniels, and a lost season,
- 23:22Speaker 4: depending how it goes. And it's ugly. If Dan Quinn
- 23:25Speaker 4: gets fired, this will be the first paragraph in his
- 23:28Speaker 4: commander's obit because it was that ugly and that easy
- 23:31Speaker 4: to consume for the sports fan.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you remember the Giants, Miracle of the Meadowlands, 1978.
- 23:37Speaker 3: We still talk about that, at least in Philadelphia they
- 23:38Speaker 3: talk about it, because it was against the Eagles 45
- 23:40Speaker 3: years later. I think this play is historical bad. People
- 23:44Speaker 3: know this play forever. The time that Jaden Daniels let
- 23:46Speaker 3: the clock run out. Now, we did this yesterday. I
- 23:49Speaker 3: personally blame the coaching staff more than the player. But regardless,
- 23:53Speaker 3: I think this is going to last for decades. And
- 23:54Speaker 3: you nailed it. Dan Quinn, when he gets fired, and
- 23:57Speaker 3: it's when, this will be the first sentence.
- 23:59Speaker 4: It'll be like the B-roll, the thing called B-roll that
- 24:01Speaker 4: they show when Scott Van Pelt or DP is talking
- 24:04Speaker 4: about Dan Quinn being let go. The first clip that'll
- 24:06Speaker 4: be on the screen will be that play.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to stay in the NFL for my
- 24:11Speaker 3: second warm take. Let's talk about Dre Greenlaw and the
- 24:13Speaker 3: San Francisco 49ers. So, Dre Greenlaw got kicked out for
- 24:17Speaker 3: headbutting a player on Sunday. I mean, this was one
- 24:20Speaker 3: of the funniest visuals because he's one niner in a
- 24:23Speaker 3: sea of Seahawks, and he does not back down.
- 24:24Speaker 2: The opposite.
- 24:25Speaker 3: This is typical Dre Greenlaw. He is, in a way,
- 24:29Speaker 3: the bad guy that the 49ers need. Every great team
- 24:32Speaker 3: has one character, one bad guy. Now, you saw Dre
- 24:36Speaker 3: Greenlaw went away last year to Denver.
- 24:38Speaker 2: San Francisco missed him tremendously. He is not.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Anywhere close to the most talented linebacker on that team,
- 24:43Speaker 3: it's Fred Warner. But every great dynasty going back for many,
- 24:47Speaker 3: many years has a bad guy. Let me name some
- 24:49Speaker 3: for you, Paul. I'm going to go into different sports.
- 24:51Speaker 3: James Harrison with the Steelers. I mean, he was the
- 24:54Speaker 3: nastiest player. There's no way he could have lasted two weeks.
- 24:57Speaker 2: In this game.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Vontaze Perfect didn't win exactly. Go back to Jack Tatum
- 25:01Speaker 3: with the Raiders.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Nice.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I think the Patriots during their dynasty, Rodney Harrison played
- 25:04Speaker 3: that role a lot. He always got a helmet in
- 25:06Speaker 3: there late. But it's even more so in basketball. You
- 25:09Speaker 3: have Dennis Rodman. You obviously have Draymond to a large extent.
- 25:13Speaker 3: You can have all the talent in the world. You
- 25:15Speaker 3: need one guy that really instills fear on the other side.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I completely agree. You need one jerk on your roster
- 25:21Speaker 4: who doesn't mind being called a jerk. If you stay
- 25:23Speaker 4: out in the Bay Area, Bill Romanowski back in the day.
- 25:25Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 4: First ballot.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and he would get penalized. He might get kicked
- 25:30Speaker 2: out of game.
- 25:31Speaker 3: But in the long run, I think that helps the
- 25:33Speaker 3: team more than just a really great cover linebacker. Dre Greenlaw,
- 25:37Speaker 3: you never know what's going to happen, and he will
- 25:39Speaker 3: end up hurting you. But I think living on the
- 25:41Speaker 3: edge can really help your defense.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You need one who's not afraid to get fined on
- 25:44Speaker 4: behalf of the other team. All right, coming up next,
- 25:46Speaker 4: Ty Dunn will join us of Go Long TD. A
- 25:49Speaker 4: lot more on the NFL season. And we're going to
- 25:51Speaker 4: talk about the teams that are done, done, done.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 25:54Speaker 4: This is not so fast. Yeah, Bay Area, you got Romanowski.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Oh, they had a lot.
- 25:59Speaker 4: You got Lyle Alzado 100 years ago.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Draymond Green.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Jack Tatum.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Raiders had all of them.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, the entire Raiders franchise.
- 26:08Speaker 4: There was no nice guy.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Perloff and Paps, NBC
- 26:13Speaker 3: Sports Now and Peacock. Breaking down last night's Bills win
- 26:16Speaker 3: over the Rams. And again, Not So Fast rule. It
- 26:19Speaker 3: could have easily been a Rams win over the Bills.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Let's not draw any conclusions. Right.
- 26:22Speaker 4: We should do a segment where we break down what
- 26:24Speaker 4: if the other side happened. Like, what if the Rams won?
- 26:26Speaker 4: Let's chop that up for five minutes.
- 26:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:27Speaker 3: You know who's really good at this. It's Ty Dunn
- 26:29Speaker 3: from GoLongTD.com. Former Packers beat reporter, Bills beat reporter. And
- 26:34Speaker 3: you know his long features. Caused some controversy, but a
- 26:38Speaker 3: really outstanding performance. Go to golongtd.com for his podcasts and articles. Ty,
- 26:43Speaker 3: I have a question I want to start off the bat.
- 26:44Speaker 3: You've been covering the Bills. Is this year different with
- 26:48Speaker 3: a new coach or is it the same old Bills?
- 26:51Speaker 7: I genuinely think it's different, guys. You know, when the
- 26:54Speaker 7: hire was made, not just nationally, locally, it was not
- 26:58Speaker 7: a popular hire.
- 27:00Speaker 4: I think one of the local TV stations.
- 27:01Speaker 7: It might have been the same one that had sports
- 27:03Speaker 7: psychologists on to see how the players are going to
- 27:05Speaker 7: cope with Sean McDermott being fired.
- 27:07Speaker 4: That was a thing.
- 27:09Speaker 7: That happened. They did a poll and like single digits
- 27:12Speaker 7: percentage of fans approved of the Joe Brady hire. But
- 27:15Speaker 7: when you really get to know Joe Brady and how
- 27:17Speaker 7: he's wired, how he thinks the big picture, how he
- 27:21Speaker 7: wants the players to attack the moments that we saw
- 27:24Speaker 7: last night at SoFi Stadium.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Very different than Sean McDermott.
- 27:28Speaker 7: And it's very different where it matters most, the relationship
- 27:30Speaker 7: with Josh Allen.
- 27:31Speaker 4: You know, let me ask you about last night's game.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Let's say it did go the other way and that
- 27:35Speaker 4: Greg Rousseau does not block that kick. and the Rams
- 27:37Speaker 4: get a nice overtime win where they carve up the defense.
- 27:40Speaker 4: What do you think the reaction would have been in
- 27:42Speaker 4: Buffalo today?
- 27:44Speaker 2: Panic! Everybody panic, right?
- 27:47Speaker 7: That's how it is everywhere in the marathon that is
- 27:50Speaker 7: the NFL season. But honestly, a lot of it would
- 27:53Speaker 7: be justified. I don't think that those problems are going anywhere.
- 27:57Speaker 7: It's not like you can just pluck a cornerback off
- 27:59Speaker 7: of the cornerback tree in the waiver wire.
- 28:02Speaker 4: It's a hard player to find.
- 28:04Speaker 7: And yeah, the, the, the safety struggled, the quarterback struggled,
- 28:07Speaker 7: the line, but everybody outside of like Greg Russo, Dwayne
- 28:10Speaker 7: Carter and Dion Walker, it's, It's been a slog for
- 28:13Speaker 7: this Bills defense.
- 28:14Speaker 2: But you know what?
- 28:15Speaker 7: I think they kind of knew going into this season
- 28:16Speaker 7: with Jim Leonard's scheme, it's much different than Sean McDermott's.
- 28:20Speaker 7: The thing is, like, okay, you don't want to just
- 28:22Speaker 7: force offenses to go 12, 15 plays and keep everything
- 28:26Speaker 7: in front of you. The whole theme of the offseason
- 28:28Speaker 7: was attack, attack, attack, get the ball back to Josh Allen.
- 28:31Speaker 7: It was weird then to see them not really blitzing,
- 28:34Speaker 7: not really pressuring and taking those kind of chances because
- 28:36Speaker 7: Matthew Stafford, when he threw to Puka Nakua 24 times,
- 28:39Speaker 7: did whatever the hell he wanted. On top of the
- 28:42Speaker 7: James Cook fumble, that's been.
- 28:43Speaker 4: A problem for him.
- 28:45Speaker 6: But you know what?
- 28:45Speaker 7: Josh Allen, if he is uninhibited, if he is allowed
- 28:48Speaker 7: to think clearly and treat the field like it's his backyard.
- 28:51Speaker 7: I mean, everybody has said that about him that I've
- 28:53Speaker 7: talked to for years and years. Don't get in his head.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:56Speaker 4: The greatest artist. Don't tell Dave Chappelle. Don't swear. Swearing
- 29:00Speaker 4: is off limits.
- 29:01Speaker 5: No.
- 29:01Speaker 7: Let Josh Allen be Josh Allen. That's what you saw.
- 29:03Speaker 4: And he can make problems go away.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Ty, a lot of quarterbacks slow down their running as
- 29:07Speaker 3: their career goes on. I don't see that with Josh Allen.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Paul had a take at our last segment. He might
- 29:12Speaker 3: go down as the greatest running quarterback of all time,
- 29:14Speaker 3: him and Lamar Jackson right there.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Any risk with running?
- 29:18Speaker 3: It feels like he's impervious to injury, but that is
- 29:21Speaker 3: usually the case with running quarterbacks.
- 29:24Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a great question, and it's one that the
- 29:26Speaker 7: Bills have had every year, right, since they've drafted Josh Allen.
- 29:30Speaker 4: When should he slide?
- 29:31Speaker 7: When should he step out of bounds? There's times where
- 29:33Speaker 7: the coach's voice or the GM's voice gets a little
- 29:36Speaker 7: louder and you start to wonder, OK, how is this
- 29:38Speaker 7: going to affect his play style? And I think that's
- 29:41Speaker 7: why I really loved the Joe Brady hire is he
- 29:44Speaker 7: he knows that the organization has to funnel through Josh Allen.
- 29:47Speaker 7: He is the center of everybody's universe. And you don't
- 29:51Speaker 7: want to get in his head. And there's been times
- 29:54Speaker 7: in Josh Allen's career where you can maybe see a
- 29:56Speaker 7: little indecisiveness. Maybe he's starting to tap the brakes here
- 30:01Speaker 7: and there and his play style is a little neutered.
- 30:03Speaker 6: And I don't know, guys.
- 30:04Speaker 4: It's a worthwhile debate.
- 30:06Speaker 7: I feel like for the Bills to get to a
- 30:08Speaker 7: Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl, you need Josh
- 30:11Speaker 7: Allen in full. You need him running through linebackers and
- 30:15Speaker 7: stiff arming and hurtling.
- 30:16Speaker 4: And you know what?
- 30:17Speaker 7: If it cuts his career short, so be it. He
- 30:20Speaker 7: might not be that Matthew Stafford operating from the pocket
- 30:23Speaker 7: and winning MVPs at 38-39. But I sat down with
- 30:27Speaker 7: Josh Allen this summer, and we talked about that Denver game.
- 30:30Speaker 7: The big mistake at the end of the first half, right?
- 30:32Speaker 6: So foolish.
- 30:33Speaker 7: It's the kind of play we've seen from him throughout
- 30:36Speaker 7: his career. And he said, quote, I'm going to play
- 30:38Speaker 7: football how I know how to play it until I can't.
- 30:41Speaker 7: And when I can't play it the way I want
- 30:43Speaker 7: to play it, it's probably when I'm done. But hopefully
- 30:45Speaker 7: that's still quite some time. He's not going to change,
- 30:48Speaker 7: and I don't think he should.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Yeah, Ty, I agree with that because I remember they
- 30:51Speaker 4: tried to get Michael Vick to stop running, and when
- 30:53Speaker 4: they stopped running, he was easier to defend. Cam Newton,
- 30:55Speaker 4: now he got hurt, but right after his MVP season,
- 30:58Speaker 4: they said, hey, can you run a little less? You're
- 31:00Speaker 4: too valuable. He stopped being threatening. Let me go into
- 31:03Speaker 4: the AFC overall. If you were running the Bills, your
- 31:07Speaker 4: team that you'd be most concerned, I know it's obvious,
- 31:09Speaker 4: the Chiefs, but it Is it the Chiefs versus the
- 31:11Speaker 4: field as the team you're most concerned about in the AFC?
- 31:16Speaker 7: Man, that's a great question because I'm tempted to say
- 31:18Speaker 7: Baltimore and Lamar and Henry, but you know what? They
- 31:22Speaker 7: beat the Ravens in the playoffs. They haven't beaten the
- 31:24Speaker 7: Kansas City Chiefs, I think, until proven otherwise. It's Andy Reid.
- 31:28Speaker 4: It's Patrick Mahomes.
- 31:29Speaker 7: It's psychologically getting over that hurdle, and that's why they
- 31:35Speaker 7: made the move. It's probably three, four years too late,
- 31:37Speaker 7: 13 seconds late, Could have done it. I mean, it
- 31:40Speaker 7: was that damning of a loss and the head coach's
- 31:42Speaker 7: fingerprints were all over that one. But eventually they made
- 31:45Speaker 7: the move and they want to be in attack mode
- 31:48Speaker 7: on both sides of the ball on paper in theory.
- 31:50Speaker 7: And you can't be afraid of the Chiefs. I think
- 31:53Speaker 7: it's a remade Chiefs team. And honestly, as great as
- 31:56Speaker 7: Patrick Mahomes has been, Kenneth Walker has completely changed the
- 32:00Speaker 7: dynamic of things out there.
- 32:01Speaker 3: All right, Ty, two teams you know very well are
- 32:03Speaker 3: the Packers and the Bears. Now, if the Bears could
- 32:06Speaker 3: have a mulligan, do you think they would avoid giving
- 32:09Speaker 3: so much bulletin board material at Green Bay? Or am
- 32:12Speaker 3: I overestimating the emotional impact of the lead-up to this
- 32:15Speaker 3: game as the Packers blew them out on Sunday?
- 32:18Speaker 4: No, I don't think they regret a thing.
- 32:20Speaker 6: And they shouldn't, right?
- 32:21Speaker 7: I mean, the Bears have been the little brother for
- 32:24Speaker 7: a generation. Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.
- 32:28Speaker 7: This team has owned the Bears. That's what Aaron Rodgers
- 32:31Speaker 7: screamed at the fans. So I love what Ben Johnson's done, right,
- 32:36Speaker 7: to stand in that locker room after that playoff game
- 32:38Speaker 7: and say F the Packers, which, by the way, for
- 32:41Speaker 7: an owner who didn't want any swearing at hard knocks
- 32:44Speaker 7: once upon a time, Ben Johnson is taking control of
- 32:48Speaker 7: that entire operation. They are built in his image. In
- 32:52Speaker 7: every possible way. So, yeah, I think that there is
- 32:56Speaker 7: a belief that comes from that. In latent games, they
- 32:59Speaker 7: believe they're going to make that play. You saw it
- 33:01Speaker 7: all last year. So I don't think they regret a thing.
- 33:03Speaker 4: But you know what?
- 33:04Speaker 7: I give the Packers a lot of credit for punching back.
- 33:07Speaker 7: Because I sat down with Javon Bullard in the spring
- 33:09Speaker 7: down in Milledgeville, Georgia's hometown, and it was kind of
- 33:13Speaker 7: music to the ears. You very rarely hear the Packers
- 33:17Speaker 7: speak in these terms.
- 33:18Speaker 2: He's like, damn, Chicago. I hate their coach. I hate
- 33:21Speaker 2: their team.
- 33:22Speaker 7: I like their food.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Their food's pretty good. But I hate everything about the Bears.
- 33:26Speaker 7: And I feel like they tried not to do a
- 33:30Speaker 7: lot of talking the week of the game, and then
- 33:32Speaker 7: they won, and then more of that truth came out. Hey,
- 33:35Speaker 7: you got to fight fire with fire. So when the
- 33:38Speaker 7: Packers and Bears hate each other, Everybody wins.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Everybody wins. I grew up in Chicago, and I spent
- 33:43Speaker 4: a lot of time in Green Bay, especially at the draft.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Green Bay is less of an F-bomb place. Chicago, more
- 33:47Speaker 4: likely to throw one out there casually. All right, before
- 33:49Speaker 4: we let you go, since you brought it up, we
- 33:51Speaker 4: do a thing called Such Thing is a Dumb Question.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Better food town, no pressure because of where you live now,
- 33:57Speaker 4: Green Bay or Buffalo?
- 34:00Speaker 5: Ooh.
- 34:01Speaker 2: I've got to go Buffalo.
- 34:03Speaker 7: I've got to go 9-11 Tavern Wings.
- 34:06Speaker 4: In South Buffalo.
- 34:07Speaker 7: If anybody out there is looking for the absolute best wings,
- 34:10Speaker 7: you've got to hit up this spot. It's the absolute best.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Just get a bowl of thin fries, hot wings, three
- 34:17Speaker 7: or four Molson's to pass the time while you wait
- 34:20Speaker 7: for those wings.
- 34:21Speaker 2: You'll not be disappointed. What are my health food options
- 34:23Speaker 2: in these two towns we're talking about?
- 34:26Speaker 4: But Green Bay, Ty, Green Bay, fish fry on Friday nights,
- 34:30Speaker 4: you've got to love that. There's some good food in
- 34:33Speaker 4: Green Bay.
- 34:34Speaker 7: They're big on the supper clubs, right? I mean, that's
- 34:37Speaker 7: a huge Wisconsin staple.
- 34:38Speaker 2: So, yeah, Green Bay, I.
- 34:40Speaker 7: Don't want to besmirch Green Bay. I lived there five years.
- 34:42Speaker 7: You know, Republic Chop House, that's always the go-to to
- 34:45Speaker 7: interview players. I remember I met up with Eddie Lacy
- 34:48Speaker 7: his rookie year for a story, and we ate at
- 34:50Speaker 7: Republic Chop House. Eddie, can he?
- 34:52Speaker 2: He can eat, baby.
- 34:55Speaker 7: We forget how good he was those first two years.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Just steamrolling everything in front of him.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Both.
- 35:01Speaker 6: All the above. All the above.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Could have been there.
- 35:04Speaker 2: All right, Ty. Thanks for the time, bud.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going to mull that over because I need
- 35:08Speaker 3: a good salad, so I don't know if either town
- 35:10Speaker 3: is perfect for me.
- 35:11Speaker 2: But we'll talk to you soon. Thanks for the time.
- 35:13Speaker 6: Hey, thanks a lot, fellas. Anytime.
- 35:15Speaker 5: See ya.
- 35:16Speaker 3: That's Ty Dunn, GoLongTV.com. Just interviewed Peter King, by the way,
- 35:19Speaker 3: his old friend. Very interesting.
- 35:21Speaker 2: By the way, Paul, you have to answer that same question.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Green Bay or Buffalo? Which do you want?
- 35:25Speaker 4: I've only been to Buffalo once, and it was one day,
- 35:27Speaker 4: and I did try some wings. I don't remember where
- 35:29Speaker 4: I went. I trusted a local. But yeah, they were
- 35:31Speaker 4: everything you think they're going to be. I like Wisconsin food.
- 35:33Speaker 4: I'm big on the Friday night fish fry, cheese curds,
- 35:37Speaker 4: fried cheese curds.
- 35:38Speaker 6: I could.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Hop those all day.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Do you remember with the Dan Patrick show, we went
- 35:41Speaker 2: to Milwaukee.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Yes.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Todd Fritz threw out the first pitch.
- 35:44Speaker 3: All I know is we got off the plane and
- 35:45Speaker 3: someone handed us a bag of cheese curds about this big.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yeah. And we proceeded to eat them all.
- 35:49Speaker 4: It's like a lay in Honolulu. They just give you
- 35:51Speaker 4: cheese curds at the local airport.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Awesome. All right.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Coming up next, we have the Clip Joy. We'll hear
- 35:55Speaker 3: from Scott Van Pelt, Ross Tucker, and much more.
- 35:59Speaker 2: That's next. Not so fast.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Yeah, Green Bay. I was in Madison once, and I
- 36:04Speaker 4: put on like seven pounds in a weekend.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that sounds about right. That tracks.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I mean, Madison is dangerous in a good way.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Oh, my God. I've never heard it before. Why do
- 36:18Speaker 2: you think it may be Buffalo's year?
- 36:20Speaker 6: I don't know if it is, man.
- 36:23Speaker 8: The defense is so banged up, and they've got talent
- 36:28Speaker 8: up front. But it just felt like every other play,
- 36:30Speaker 8: someone was walking off the field. I think with Josh,
- 36:33Speaker 8: that's the only thing left, right? I mean, he's living
- 36:36Speaker 8: in that space where we're going to be entertained, certainly,
- 36:40Speaker 8: between now and Valentine's Day when they play in this
- 36:44Speaker 8: stadium again, whoever it might be. But the only thing
- 36:47Speaker 8: he can do at this point is check that box.
- 36:50Speaker 8: Got to get to a Super Bowl.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Back on NSF with Pabst and Perloff. That is Scott
- 36:55Speaker 4: Van Pelt, our buddy SVP. impromptu appearance on the Dan
- 36:59Speaker 4: Patrick show from the passenger seat of an SUV on
- 37:03Speaker 4: the 405 going to LAX.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Yeah, was he in the front seat or the back seat?
- 37:05Speaker 2: I couldn't tell. He looked like he was in the front.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Front seat. He's 6'5. He's a lanky fella. Possibly 6'6.
- 37:09Speaker 4: He's definitely a front seater.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Stanford Steve driving. Was that clear at all?
- 37:13Speaker 4: Almost guaranteed.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah, that was great. And I, by the way,
- 37:17Speaker 2: agree with him. I stole that line earlier.
- 37:18Speaker 3: That's all that's left for Josh Allen. So if we're
- 37:21Speaker 3: going to talk bills, that's all I really want to
- 37:22Speaker 3: talk about is are they going to win a Super Bowl?
- 37:24Speaker 4: I guess the comparison, I think would be John Elway,
- 37:26Speaker 4: where the physical abilities, no doubt. Now, John Elway went
- 37:30Speaker 4: to three Super Bowls before he won his two.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Got killed in all three.
- 37:33Speaker 4: He got smoked, but you do get credit for making
- 37:35Speaker 4: Super Bowls, I think. Like, Josh Allen's career, would he
- 37:39Speaker 4: be better off if he was like John Elway and
- 37:41Speaker 4: went 0 for 3? Now, I'm checking myself because 0
- 37:44Speaker 4: for 3 after 0 for 4 with the Bills... it
- 37:47Speaker 4: would be even worse.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Well, Jim Kelly 0-4.
- 37:49Speaker 4: What I'm saying is, would Josh Allen's career be in
- 37:52Speaker 4: better shape now?
- 37:53Speaker 3: No, I think he'd be in better shape by going
- 37:54Speaker 3: to the Super Bowl. Last year, with no Mahomes in
- 37:57Speaker 3: the playoff field, quarterbacks like Bo Nix and Drake May
- 38:00Speaker 3: were in their second and third years. He has to
- 38:03Speaker 3: make it last year. To me, I think when they
- 38:05Speaker 3: look back at this whole thing, there's going to be
- 38:06Speaker 3: two real blown opportunities here. the 13-second game against Kansas City,
- 38:10Speaker 3: and they almost put Mahomes out. And last year, I
- 38:12Speaker 3: still am not quite sure why they didn't make it.
- 38:14Speaker 4: You know, I still think about this. I worry sometimes
- 38:16Speaker 4: for players' legacies, which is weird because they're not worried
- 38:18Speaker 4: about me. Either Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, odds are,
- 38:22Speaker 4: will not win a Super Bowl.
- 38:23Speaker 2: No. Just on the odds. Yeah, and you could throw
- 38:25Speaker 2: Joe Burrow into that conversation.
- 38:26Speaker 5: Joe Burrow.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Because he's in the AFC as well.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Josh Allen's worried about you.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yeah, a little bit, here and there. All right, here's
- 38:32Speaker 4: another one. Ross Tucker, our buddy from CBS Sports, was
- 38:35Speaker 4: back on the DP show today. Love to chop it
- 38:37Speaker 4: up with Ross. And Ross talked about the Chargers and
- 38:39Speaker 4: the Justin Herbert situation.
- 38:42Speaker 5: No Ladd McConkie, no Quinton Johnston. Trey Harris gets hurt
- 38:47Speaker 5: during the game. He's basically playing with college kids blocking
- 38:52Speaker 5: for him and third and fourth string receivers. That said,
- 38:59Speaker 5: he's turning the ball over too much. He does not
- 39:03Speaker 5: look overly comfortable playing. in Mike McDaniel's offense. It's really
- 39:07Speaker 5: fascinating because I think a lot of people were really
- 39:10Speaker 5: fired up about the Chargers this year, really fired up
- 39:13Speaker 5: about Justin Herbert working with Mike McDaniel, and so far
- 39:17Speaker 5: it's gone about as poorly as it could possibly go.
- 39:21Speaker 3: I love the perspective because the reality is the things
- 39:25Speaker 3: around Justin Herbert are not good.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and most people don't have that perspective. They watch
- 39:29Speaker 4: a highlight or they see a game and they don't
- 39:31Speaker 4: know who's on the offensive line. And it's understandable. You
- 39:33Speaker 4: can't chop up the Chargers and look at their depth
- 39:35Speaker 4: chart before the game. But knowing what he's dealing with
- 39:38Speaker 4: in the new offense. That said, It's gotten to the
- 39:41Speaker 4: point where when Justin Herbert got the ball back last
- 39:43Speaker 4: week in the fourth quarter down, I was like, well,
- 39:45Speaker 4: this isn't going to work out.
- 39:46Speaker 2: No.
- 39:46Speaker 4: And that's not a good sign because your reputation is
- 39:49Speaker 4: what perceives you.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:50Speaker 3: And there was a fumble where an offensive lineman's foot
- 39:53Speaker 3: kicked up. There's always bad luck with the Chargers. But
- 39:56Speaker 3: in the past, the bad luck's come in the playoffs.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Now it's coming early.
- 39:59Speaker 2: All right. Next, from the DP show, Marvin. Love this.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Came on earlier today and had an interesting take on
- 40:06Speaker 3: Eli Manning and the Hall of Fame.
- 40:10Speaker 6: Eli's going to be– and eventually he'll get into the
- 40:13Speaker 6: Hall of Fame.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 6: It's going to take a while, but– No, he'll get in.
- 40:16Speaker 5: He'll get in.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:17Speaker 6: Because of one last name.
- 40:18Speaker 2: That did help him.
- 40:20Speaker 5: No, no, Brady.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you were talking about the Manning name.
- 40:23Speaker 6: No, no, Brady's the last name that gets him in.
- 40:25Speaker 6: If he beats Roethlisberger, we're not really having a discussion.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Wait, you think if he wins two Super Bowls and
- 40:30Speaker 2: they're not against Tom Brady, he's not getting into the
- 40:32Speaker 2: Hall of Fame?
- 40:33Speaker 6: He's not.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Wow.
- 40:35Speaker 6: Okay. I think if he beats Roethlisberger and Rivers– And
- 40:39Speaker 6: not Tom Brady twice?
- 40:42Speaker 4: That was a warm take by him. I like how
- 40:44Speaker 4: he packaged it based off a last name. Not Manning,
- 40:47Speaker 4: but Brady.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it was a great take. I disagree, though.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Slightly disagree.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Slightly, yes.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Because I think two Super Bowls gets you in. Jim
- 40:55Speaker 3: Plunkett has two Super Bowl wins and is not in.
- 40:57Speaker 3: His numbers are awful.
- 40:59Speaker 2: But he should be in.
- 41:00Speaker 4: I know what you're saying. I can't comp Jim Plunkett
- 41:02Speaker 4: because he was a bit of a journeyman. And also,
- 41:04Speaker 4: there's a point. where he was a top two pick,
- 41:06Speaker 4: he was a bit of a bust at one point.
- 41:08Speaker 2: He was number one pick.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Number one pick. So Eli Manning, I think he gets
- 41:12Speaker 4: a big boost from the two Super Bowls, specifically against Brady.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Just like Matt Ryan, he has an MVP and almost
- 41:19Speaker 4: beat Brady and smoked Brady in the Super Bowls. But
- 41:21Speaker 4: that loss now, it's a bigger loss because he lost again.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Yeah, no, Matt Ryan's candidacy is interesting because he's got
- 41:27Speaker 3: great numbers. All the modern quarterbacks have great numbers. But wait,
- 41:30Speaker 3: going back, Jim Plunkett is a Hall of Famer. I
- 41:32Speaker 3: know because I've seen the film. I don't care what
- 41:35Speaker 3: happened early on. He was on a bad team. He
- 41:37Speaker 3: came back and won two Super Bowls. You win two
- 41:38Speaker 3: Super Bowls, you are in. And the fact that Eli
- 41:41Speaker 3: didn't get in on the first ballot surprised me, to
- 41:43Speaker 3: be honest.
- 41:43Speaker 4: I think it was a bit of a message. I
- 41:45Speaker 4: think that was a Manning fatigue message by some people
- 41:48Speaker 4: in the media or some of the voters, I should say,
- 41:50Speaker 4: who are a lot of media members. I think they said, well, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 41:53Speaker 4: this guy was 117 and 117 as a quarterback. The
- 41:56Speaker 4: only thing he ever led the NFL in was interceptions
- 41:58Speaker 4: once in his career. Let's make him wait one year.
- 42:01Speaker 4: They like to do that at the Hall of Fame.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you could be right. Marvin does have some truth
- 42:05Speaker 3: to this. Beating Brady twice, nobody else beat Brady.
- 42:09Speaker 4: On your resume, if you say you work for one place, oh,
- 42:11Speaker 4: you work for this place with this person, it's like
- 42:13Speaker 4: a resume boost. All right, let's get to our last
- 42:16Speaker 4: clip today. This is Sean Casey, the former great Reds
- 42:19Speaker 4: hitter who knows about hitting. Not so much about bad hitting.
- 42:22Speaker 4: And he talked about Otani, what he's doing wrong, what
- 42:24Speaker 4: he's doing right, but mostly the wrong.
- 42:26Speaker 9: First off, when I look at Shohei's swing, it just
- 42:28Speaker 9: doesn't look like Shohei. I mean, everything is literally going
- 42:31Speaker 9: to the right. I mean, it looks like he's pulling out.
- 42:33Speaker 9: You know, we call that kind of stepping in the bucket.
- 42:35Speaker 9: His butt's going towards the first base dugout. He's kind
- 42:38Speaker 9: of just waving that. the pitches so I wonder for
- 42:43Speaker 9: Shohei you know right now you know he's not really
- 42:46Speaker 9: hitting the fastball upper rail which he does usually better
- 42:48Speaker 9: than anybody in baseball and it just seems like to
- 42:51Speaker 9: me he's not being able to get on that front
- 42:53Speaker 9: side and really drive the baseball so the pitchers they're
- 42:57Speaker 9: hitting them with fastballs up he's swinging through them and
- 43:00Speaker 9: then they're soft away and he's just kind of waving
- 43:02Speaker 9: at it he just looks like he's not healthy to
- 43:05Speaker 9: me DP.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why I think you bench him. And I'm sorry,
- 43:08Speaker 3: I'm on the record here. He's not doing anything. I
- 43:10Speaker 3: keep hearing this from multiple analysts. His butt is in
- 43:12Speaker 3: the dugout.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 43:13Speaker 2: So that's not good.
- 43:14Speaker 4: That seems like baseball jargon. If your butt's in the dugout,
- 43:16Speaker 4: that can't be a good thing. I looked it up.
- 43:18Speaker 4: But Sean Casey, again with perspective, people who play, this
- 43:21Speaker 4: guy hit. 330 one year. And for him to say,
- 43:24Speaker 4: here's what I see, it's like, That matches what I
- 43:26Speaker 4: see because Otani looks awkward, but he's explaining it.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Absolutely. And Sean Casey, top five baseball guests on DP Show,
- 43:31Speaker 2: top three. He's the man. I love that guy.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Top three DP Show guests you would love to hang with.
- 43:37Speaker 4: We've hung with him before. It's like hanging out with
- 43:39Speaker 4: a blender.
- 43:39Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 43:40Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, constructive criticism and our done-done
- 43:44Speaker 4: list for the NFL season.
- 43:45Speaker 2: It's the debut. Stick around.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Not so fast.
- 43:48Speaker 2: So not just a done list, a done-done list.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Yeah, if you're done, you can come back. If you're done-done,
- 43:53Speaker 4: it's over, John.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Done-done. Got it.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Butt in the dugout. You don't want that.
- 43:57Speaker 2: No, that's bad.
- 43:58Speaker 4: You want to put butts in the seats.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Back on Not So Fast, Perloff, Paps.
- 44:04Speaker 3: All right, we're through five weeks of the NFL season, Paul,
- 44:07Speaker 3: and I understand we have a definition here called done-done.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Now, you're acting like you don't know what it is.
- 44:12Speaker 4: You and I used to do this back in the
- 44:13Speaker 4: Leisureman days. These are teams that have no chance at
- 44:15Speaker 4: this point, not mathematically, football intuition-wise. So done means bad.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Done-done means it's over. Can we assume... The Dolphins, Titans,
- 44:25Speaker 4: and Cardinals are done-done.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Beyond done-done.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Beyond done-done.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Three dones.
- 44:29Speaker 4: All right, they're in the graveyard. The 0-5 Chargers, done-done.
- 44:33Speaker 4: That means they have no chance.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Now, I think they're better than 0-5, but no, I
- 44:37Speaker 2: cannot give them a chance.
- 44:38Speaker 4: I'm not done-doning.
- 44:40Speaker 3: I'm done-doning them because the injuries are just too much
- 44:43Speaker 3: to overcome.
- 44:43Speaker 4: I think the reaction to the poor start makes it
- 44:46Speaker 4: feel like they're done-done. The Texans, which they almost beat
- 44:49Speaker 4: the Dallas Cowboys. They won last week. They are a
- 44:52Speaker 4: slightly interesting one and four.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I'm not even going to give them one done.
- 44:56Speaker 2: I think that they're right in the mix.
- 44:59Speaker 3: The Jaguars look like they're going to win that division,
- 45:01Speaker 3: but I think the Texans improve. They lost to some
- 45:04Speaker 3: good teams, and Marvin Harrison gives them a little something.
- 45:07Speaker 3: If they could keep Nico Collins healthy, they would be
- 45:09Speaker 3: really dangerous.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Now, here's a team. There's the Texans' schedule. It's a
- 45:12Speaker 4: little friendly.
- 45:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Boy, London, not that friendly.
- 45:17Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 45:18Speaker 4: Yeah, not so bad. Not so bad the next four weeks. Okay,
- 45:21Speaker 4: I will go with the New York Jets. Some people
- 45:23Speaker 4: like to call them done-done before the season even starts.
- 45:26Speaker 4: They've been in all these games. They're two and three.
- 45:28Speaker 2: God, they're done and a half. I mean, come on.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Done and a half. First of all, the Jets do
- 45:35Speaker 2: this every year.
- 45:35Speaker 3: They look bad, then they win a game in a monsoon,
- 45:37Speaker 3: and everyone's like, well, maybe there's something here.
- 45:40Speaker 2: I do not think they are a good team. I'm
- 45:41Speaker 2: going done, done.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Now, we have to figure out the punishment if a done,
- 45:44Speaker 4: done team, theirs are scheduled.
- 45:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm happy with that because the Bills and the
- 45:47Speaker 3: Patriots are in the same division.
- 45:49Speaker 2: And look at, there's just too many good teams in
- 45:51Speaker 2: the conference. I say done, done. They are not making
- 45:53Speaker 2: the playoffs and I will stake. Something on that point.
- 45:56Speaker 5: There you go.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Steak steak on it.
- 45:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 45:57Speaker 4: The Saints are 1-4, but they're in the NFC South,
- 46:00Speaker 4: which means to me they're not done done. They were
- 46:02Speaker 4: this lovable story before the season started. Like, hey, look
- 46:04Speaker 4: at that team. They're cute with Tyler Shuck.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Done done? Done done.
- 46:09Speaker 3: They looked good in the beginning of the season, but
- 46:11Speaker 3: we should have known their defense wasn't going to be
- 46:12Speaker 3: good because they don't have the players. This is a
- 46:14Speaker 3: rebuilding team that somehow we convinced ourselves was not a
- 46:18Speaker 3: rebuilding team, and now they're playing like it again.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Now they could be in first place in about a
- 46:22Speaker 4: week and a half.
- 46:23Speaker 3: I like Atlanta and Carolina. I mean, Atlanta really should
- 46:25Speaker 3: be 3-2. They should have beaten Baltimore with Snoop Huntley.
- 46:29Speaker 3: I'm pretty confident in this one.
- 46:30Speaker 2: I feel good.
- 46:31Speaker 3: I think New Orleans mainly because of the defense. Shuck
- 46:33Speaker 3: is okay, but I just don't think they're a well-rounded team.
- 46:37Speaker 3: I'm saying Dunn-Dunn. You're not going anywhere near there.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Can't there just because of the math. That is Dunn-Dunn
- 46:41Speaker 4: for a Tuesday and not so fast. It's time for
- 46:44Speaker 4: constructive criticism. Your feedback, your thoughts, your jabs at us
- 46:48Speaker 4: and maybe my shirt. Here we go, Pearl. This is
- 46:51Speaker 4: from Eric Jayton. If I'm going to a football watch party,
- 46:54Speaker 4: what is the perfect food to bring? I'll go first.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 46:57Speaker 4: If you could come up with a way for you
- 46:59Speaker 4: or your significant other to make a seven-layer dip, you'd
- 47:02Speaker 4: win the party. Right, Pearl?
- 47:03Speaker 2: I was going seven-layer dip, too.
- 47:04Speaker 9: I know.
- 47:05Speaker 4: We're like this because we're bros. When you walk in
- 47:07Speaker 4: with a seven-layer dip, it's like pulling up to a
- 47:10Speaker 4: drag race in like a– I don't know what to
- 47:12Speaker 4: compare it to. Now, the problem is people don't like
- 47:14Speaker 4: to dip into the seven-layer dip. You've got to break
- 47:16Speaker 4: the seal.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you've got sour cream, you've got guac,
- 47:18Speaker 3: you've got cheese, you have all the food groups. Now,
- 47:20Speaker 3: the problem is wings are the best football food, but
- 47:23Speaker 3: you can't bring wings.
- 47:24Speaker 4: You can bring a tray of wings if you make them.
- 47:26Speaker 4: That would be right up there. If you somehow unveil
- 47:28Speaker 4: a tray of wings, you've got the W.
- 47:30Speaker 2: They're polarizing, but what's your thought on deviled eggs?
- 47:33Speaker 4: Just as long as they're not in my house, they'll
- 47:34Speaker 4: be fine.
- 47:35Speaker 2: You don't like deviled eggs?
- 47:36Speaker 4: Nope.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Oh, I love me some deviled eggs.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Ross Van Hooten of the Van Hooten says, the best
- 47:41Speaker 4: running back-quarterback duo ever. And the FBS that isn't being
- 47:43Speaker 4: talked about, maybe he really does hate the Beavers. Oh,
- 47:46Speaker 4: he's talked about the Oregon State Beaver football, and they're
- 47:49Speaker 4: very good. You're on quarterback and running back.
- 47:51Speaker 2: And wide receiver.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Despite our friend Ryan Leaf, I'm having trouble wrapping my
- 47:55Speaker 3: head around the Pac-12, Paul, so I'm going to let
- 47:57Speaker 3: you jump in here.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Yeah, the Pac-12, the Pac-8, whatever it's called these days,
- 48:01Speaker 4: but we will give a little love to Oregon State.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Good uniforms. Always good uniforms. Pretty decent football. All right,
- 48:07Speaker 4: that is constructive criticism for the day. It's time to
- 48:09Speaker 4: finish off this great episode of Not So Fast with
- 48:12Speaker 4: The feel good.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Pearl, here we go.
- 48:15Speaker 4: We like this one a lot. This is getting a
- 48:16Speaker 4: lot of buzz on the social medias. This is Coastal
- 48:19Speaker 4: Carolina University. This is their uniforms for this Friday night.
- 48:23Speaker 4: Inspired by the 90s, clearly. Inspired by the fresh Prince
- 48:27Speaker 4: of Bel-Air and Saved by the Bell. Your thoughts?
- 48:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a fan.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Really?
- 48:31Speaker 2: I think the 90s was a low point in uniforms.
- 48:33Speaker 3: There was way too much aqua and I don't even
- 48:37Speaker 3: know what that off blue color that the Carolina Panthers had.
- 48:40Speaker 4: I think these uniforms are both ugly and fantastically nostalgic simultaneously.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we get into this a lot. I'm
- 48:48Speaker 3: a classic guy. I like Penn State's my number one,
- 48:50Speaker 3: Notre Dame. Give me simple colors. I don't need all
- 48:53Speaker 3: this glitz and glamour.
- 48:54Speaker 4: But if you go back and look at the Vancouver
- 48:56Speaker 4: Grizzlies outfits from the 90s, look at them again. Now,
- 48:59Speaker 4: I feel bad for the play-by-play person trying to figure
- 49:01Speaker 4: out the numbers from play to play.
- 49:03Speaker 2: No, I understand. It's cool to see. But did you
- 49:06Speaker 2: like that era? Everyone's nostalgic for the 90s. I was there.
- 49:10Speaker 2: It wasn't that awesome.
- 49:11Speaker 4: We've got to embrace the fact that the 90s are
- 49:12Speaker 4: a while ago. I'm bringing Urkel to that game as
- 49:14Speaker 4: the official coin flip guy.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Oh.
- 49:17Speaker 3: You know, Urkel was actually a really good athlete. good
- 49:20Speaker 3: basketball player.
- 49:20Speaker 2: At Coastal? No. No, just in general.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Coastal Carolina, technically not on the coast, more coast-ish Carolina.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Hopefully they'll send one of those jerseys.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Maybe a Mario Lopez.
- 49:29Speaker 4: Tune in to the Dan Patrick Show tomorrow right here,
- 49:31Speaker 4: not so fast, right afterwards. NBC Sports, NBC Sports Now, NBCSN,
- 49:36Speaker 4: and Peacock. Enjoy the baseball tonight.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Take it easy.
