- 0:05Speaker 1: This feels like brother job interview.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Doesn't it tell me one thing you could improve about yourself?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Many things.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I was going to say, that'll be a long job interview.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's a long list a lot of things, mainly in
- 0:18Speaker 1: the brain. So we're in the nice studios today, Yes,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the ones that are have all our screens and our
- 0:26Speaker 1: silly faces.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I feel lost without the possom urine on the roof
- 0:30Speaker 2: of your other studio.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Actually, those studios are. I don't care if this is public.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I don't know how long I'm there for. Those studios
- 0:38Speaker 1: are on their way out, like not just they're literally
- 0:40Speaker 1: going to be I'm pretty sure bulldozed.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It reminds me of a haunted house, you know how
- 0:44Speaker 2: it's really dark and you can't see anything. Yeah, but
- 0:47Speaker 2: then if you did switch the lights on, it would
- 0:49Speaker 2: be way worse than when it's dark. Yes, it reminds
- 0:52Speaker 2: me of that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It gives me public toilet vibes, like there's just a
- 0:56Speaker 1: there's just random puddles there. So I flew down here.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It was one of the best flights I've had in
- 1:02Speaker 1: such a long time. It was the sun was out,
- 1:04Speaker 1: it was crisp blue skies, and I'm like watching the
- 1:08Speaker 1: sun come over the cliffs, and I looked at and
- 1:11Speaker 1: I thought of you, yes, and I thought, I thought
- 1:15Speaker 1: about the right brothers, and I thought about it, just
- 1:19Speaker 1: the miracle of his flight. And I sat there for
- 1:23Speaker 1: a good twenty five minutes, and I tried so hard,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but I couldn't give a I couldn't. I couldn't give
- 1:29Speaker 1: a fuck about the miracle of flying.
- 1:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:32Speaker 1: The only miracles I thought about on that flight was
- 1:35Speaker 1: how they managed to charge nine dollars fifty for a muffin.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And if I can also land after this flight, it'll
- 1:42Speaker 1: be a miracle. If I don't get COVID, but you
- 1:46Speaker 1: send me.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The picture, I thought, that is so odd. I've never
- 1:48Speaker 2: seen the engine from that perspective. I didn't actually know
- 1:52Speaker 2: there were seats that far back down the plane. I
- 1:54Speaker 2: thought that was just for catering.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I was in Row five too, like barely just sort
- 1:59Speaker 1: of edging.
- 1:59Speaker 2: We can't.
- 2:00Speaker 1: God, you're a holy tweety prick. You are officially a
- 2:05Speaker 1: bit of a wing.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Those cheap flights, though, are something else right, Like I
- 2:11Speaker 1: wouldn't know they well, okay, let me put this into perspective.
- 2:16Speaker 1: There was a toddler sitting in front of me. Kudos,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I get what. I now get what it's like to
- 2:20Speaker 1: fly with a kid. Right, So, if your kid's crying
- 2:23Speaker 1: on a flight, Paul wouldn't tell you this because he
- 2:26Speaker 1: sends his kid way up the back with the maid.
- 2:29Speaker 1: But I'm sort of sitting next to my own child.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I don't know what. What do you feed your kid?
- 2:33Speaker 2: Ah, I'd have to check with the maid.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the maid would probably cook up some sort
- 2:38Speaker 1: of thing bra or something. This kid shut himself and
- 2:43Speaker 1: judging by that, I'm pretty sure he had a level
- 2:46Speaker 1: three beef indaloo.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Just off the topic of cars, Some of the
- 2:54Speaker 2: things that come out of children are horrendous, so bad.
- 2:57Speaker 2: The stuff that my daughter pumps out. I just think,
- 3:00Speaker 2: what did you? Did you eat? Something that was like
- 3:04Speaker 2: moldian a year older than it was meant to be, or.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Something probably in your house, probably rosa the maid.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'm sorry, mister Paul, I did not clean up the
- 3:13Speaker 2: covers of this week.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Please. Hey, we thought this would never happen. I thought
- 3:20Speaker 1: this would never happen. After's so many episodes of shitting
- 3:23Speaker 1: on Tesla's here we are doing a fully dedicated Tesla episode.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yes, now, This isn't going to be a Tesla wank
- 3:30Speaker 2: fest at Tesla fanboy fest. We're just going to cover
- 3:34Speaker 2: this because they recently announced that Model Why was going
- 3:37Speaker 2: on sale, so we thought now is a good chance
- 3:39Speaker 2: for us to talk about it and for everyn time
- 3:41Speaker 2: understand a bit more about electric vehicles in general.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and one thing I have noticed is there is
- 3:45Speaker 1: an obscene amount of interest in this car. In fact,
- 3:48Speaker 1: it is arguably the most requested thing we get. It
- 3:52Speaker 1: is tell us more about Tesla's people just have this friggin'
- 3:56Speaker 1: appetite for it.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And it's weird because Tesla famously hasn't spent a cent
- 4:01Speaker 2: on advertising, so they do no marketing, none of that.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So it means that all of this interest is organic
- 4:07Speaker 2: and sprooped by their customers, which I find completely bizarre.
- 4:10Speaker 2: There's not really any other companies that have that, you
- 4:14Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was getting the press car of this,
- 4:17Speaker 1: it's they don't really even have a PR department.
- 4:20Speaker 2: No, Well, they famously fired all of their PR people globally,
- 4:24Speaker 2: so here in Australia, if we have a question, there's
- 4:28Speaker 2: no one to talk to. No one will answer the
- 4:30Speaker 2: question because no one works in PR so.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I will say when I did pick this up, and
- 4:35Speaker 1: you can go to your sort of Tesla showroom. They
- 4:38Speaker 1: are incredibly nice there. They are pretty friendly and val answer.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They're pretty knowledgeable on the product that they're selling and
- 4:44Speaker 1: they're putting out there.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And they also it's worth mentioning they don't care if
- 4:48Speaker 2: you don't buy the car. They're actually just very happy
- 4:50Speaker 2: for you to drive it. And it's weird. It's very
- 4:52Speaker 2: different to a normal dealership where you rock up and
- 4:54Speaker 2: they're like, oh god, it's a person. Yeah, it's like,
- 4:59Speaker 2: I'm so sorry to inconvenience you, but I would like
- 5:01Speaker 2: to drive the car, and like, okay.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so true. I went into a Porscha dealership
- 5:08Speaker 1: with a mate of mine the other days.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's a different story if you went into a Porsa dealership,
- 5:12Speaker 2: but I wouldn't give you a car either. Did you finish?
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'm going home. I've had enough, I've had a gut
- 5:22Speaker 1: for anyway. I wasn't going to buy a Porsche, as
- 5:25Speaker 1: much as i'd like to. My mate was was there,
- 5:27Speaker 1: legit was. He's a drug dealer. He was willing to
- 5:30Speaker 1: drop a whole heap of cash, and he was. He
- 5:32Speaker 1: was that pissed off that he couldn't get served. I
- 5:35Speaker 1: don't want to I don't want to push anyway stuff
- 5:37Speaker 1: from so yeah, because like literally no one came up
- 5:40Speaker 1: to him. He looked around, he sort of waived at people. Yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 1: no one would serve him. So he's like, well, I'm
- 5:46Speaker 1: not I'm not going to this dealership. They don't deserve
- 5:48Speaker 1: my business.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it's just a different way of doing things,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and it's just a much better way of doing things
- 5:52Speaker 2: in my opinion. If you buy the car, you buy
- 5:54Speaker 2: the car. If you don't, you don't. If you crash it,
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's insured, it's another sale. Like who cares? It just
- 5:59Speaker 2: seems on to me that some car companies are so
- 6:01Speaker 2: precious about this stuff.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So the Model Y launched.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Well, let's explain what the model is. It's basically an
- 6:07Speaker 2: suv version of the Model three sedan.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Effectively sure so slightly larger in every sort of capacity yep,
- 6:15Speaker 1: what about power outputs? Very much the same, right.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Well, it mirrors the Model three. So the downside to
- 6:21Speaker 2: that is that it's slower because it weighs more than
- 6:25Speaker 2: the Model three. So you've got a whole lot more,
- 6:27Speaker 2: more panels, more room. It just means more weight, so
- 6:31Speaker 2: it is still okay compared to some SUVs in this segment.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So the entry level rewel drive is about two tons,
- 6:39Speaker 2: which is on the heavy side in comparison to a
- 6:41Speaker 2: standard suv, but for an electric suv it's not that bad.
- 6:45Speaker 2: An equivalent Model three is about eighteen hundred kilos. But
- 6:47Speaker 2: then when it comes to the power and the motors,
- 6:50Speaker 2: it's effectively the same. So the entry level is a
- 6:52Speaker 2: reweel drive. Yes, then while it's not available now, it
- 6:56Speaker 2: will become available. They do a long range version, which
- 6:58Speaker 2: is all will do motor, and then they do the
- 7:00Speaker 2: performance version, which is dual motor and all out. And
- 7:03Speaker 2: in terms of performance, the entry level zero to one
- 7:06Speaker 2: hundred and six point nine seconds, so not fast, not slow,
- 7:09Speaker 2: re will drive only midspec is about five seconds for
- 7:13Speaker 2: the long range, and then the performance is under four
- 7:15Speaker 2: second zero to one hundred. It's crazy, it is good.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's good numbers.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they're great numbers. But my opinion on this is
- 7:23Speaker 2: when they announced that they were coming to Australia. So
- 7:26Speaker 2: the background here is that in November last year I
- 7:28Speaker 2: got to check out three of the homologation cars that
- 7:31Speaker 2: they had was that here in Melbourne. So we were told,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you can't talk about this until they go on sale,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and we thought it was going to be a week
- 7:39Speaker 2: or two. We then got a call the next week
- 7:40Speaker 2: and they said, oh, you can't talk about this now
- 7:44Speaker 2: until they go on sale, which won't be this year,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and I'm like okay. So we thought it was maybe
- 7:48Speaker 2: Jan or fib So we got around to jenneal Feb.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Nothing was happening, and basically they went on sale the
- 7:54Speaker 2: other day. They were spotted by someone on the Hume
- 7:57Speaker 2: Freeway a truckload of them going to Melbourne. And this
- 7:59Speaker 2: is what makes Tesla so nimbly in a startup nature.
- 8:03Speaker 2: They're ready to just do things quickly. The cars arrived
- 8:07Speaker 2: at the dock, they got on truck and went to Melbourne.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Two days after they went to Melbourne they went on sale.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And then three days after that I had one and
- 8:15Speaker 2: the car that I had was on that truck and
- 8:18Speaker 2: had been driven for fifty days to calibrate the autopilot
- 8:20Speaker 2: system and was ready to go. If that was any
- 8:22Speaker 2: other car company, they'd be sitting around talking about you
- 8:26Speaker 2: know what I'm going to get them register we're going
- 8:27Speaker 2: to do these forms, and.
- 8:29Speaker 1: There would be many a meeting about pr and all right,
- 8:32Speaker 1: which avenues do we go down for this? There'd be
- 8:34Speaker 1: a lot of piss fighting round.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, so the fact that they were able to hit
- 8:37Speaker 2: the market running so quickly was great. So they launched
- 8:40Speaker 2: with a starting price of under seventy thousand dollars.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Which is a good price. By the way, it is
- 8:44Speaker 1: just missed.
- 8:45Speaker 2: The rebate for Victoria and New South Wales but.
- 8:49Speaker 1: The EV rebate EV rebate right, But.
- 8:51Speaker 2: In New South Wales it's still the entry level still
- 8:54Speaker 2: falls in under the stamp duty rebate, which means if
- 8:56Speaker 2: you buy one, you won't have to pay stamp duty
- 8:58Speaker 2: when it arrives. Then four days later the price went
- 9:04Speaker 2: up by three grand globally for Model three and model
- 9:08Speaker 2: Model Y, which then flowed on to Australia. They are
- 9:11Speaker 2: honoring the people that bought theirs and paid less and
- 9:15Speaker 2: this is how many they sold. Right, So in the
- 9:18Speaker 2: first few minutes of it opening, so I got the
- 9:21Speaker 2: email about it being opened and I bought the car
- 9:24Speaker 2: within the first few months.
- 9:24Speaker 1: She did you knew this was coming. I've been sitting
- 9:27Speaker 1: on the so long name iy, no, with your little I.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Knew it was coming, I just didn't know when. So
- 9:32Speaker 2: when the email arrived, I literally went straight to the
- 9:34Speaker 2: Tesla website and I had to wait for my wife
- 9:37Speaker 2: to reply that she was okay. I was buying it.
- 9:39Speaker 2: The second she did, I hit purchase. You pay a
- 9:41Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty dollars deposit check with.
- 9:43Speaker 1: The maid that she's head to drive an ev too.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Hello, mister Bullen, I half change, okay. So basically it
- 9:52Speaker 2: went on sale on I think it was the Thursday.
- 9:54Speaker 2: By the end of that day, the delivery estimate went
- 9:57Speaker 2: from August to November to to February. By the end
- 10:01Speaker 2: of the weekend it went feb to May. And now
- 10:04Speaker 2: you're waiting about a year for this car. Just based
- 10:07Speaker 2: on those initial sales, and based on my estimates, that's
- 10:09Speaker 2: about between six and ten thousand orders that were placed
- 10:12Speaker 2: over two days, and that's likely to keep growing as
- 10:15Speaker 2: fuel prices go up.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So basically, if you got in early, you got yourself
- 10:19Speaker 1: something pretty special. You got an early delivery, which is
- 10:22Speaker 1: let's say August yep, right, this is say day one
- 10:25Speaker 1: to day two pretty much August, and you didn't have
- 10:28Speaker 1: to worry about the three thousand dollars increase.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And you get to be like, Paul, that's.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Not that's not a plus, that's not a pig. I
- 10:37Speaker 1: can see your fashion slightly changed a little bit.
- 10:41Speaker 2: By the way, don't be jealous.
- 10:43Speaker 1: That's what is that.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It's a sweater.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Yeah I know that, but yeah, we really it doesn't
- 10:48Speaker 1: have the it doesn't have the signature ten pockets from
- 10:51Speaker 1: rivers anyway.
- 10:54Speaker 2: But yeah, So I think there's been a huge amount
- 10:57Speaker 2: of interest in the car, and I think that's reflective
- 11:00Speaker 2: of the market. You look at fuel prices at the moment,
- 11:01Speaker 2: even though the government reduced the fuel excise, comically the
- 11:05Speaker 2: petrol companies like, oh, I'll just pop that twenty cents
- 11:08Speaker 2: straight back on there. So I think that's a little
- 11:12Speaker 2: bit crazy. And just this is a very quick side topic.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I don't know that the government thought about it all
- 11:16Speaker 2: that much because truck drivers who used to claim part
- 11:19Speaker 2: of that fuel excise as an offset now are getting
- 11:22Speaker 2: fifty percent less and at the moment when transport is
- 11:27Speaker 2: at record highs in terms of cost, and truck drivers
- 11:30Speaker 2: now who you typically tend to use a lot of
- 11:32Speaker 2: diesel and now claiming fifty percent less that offset the
- 11:36Speaker 2: cost of everything is going to go up because deliveries
- 11:39Speaker 2: are more expensive. Truck drivers are going to lose their jobs.
- 11:41Speaker 2: So while it might help you spend ten dollars less
- 11:45Speaker 2: on a tank of fuel or something, it is decimating
- 11:47Speaker 2: the transport industry. And it obviously hasn't even helped with
- 11:50Speaker 2: fuel because it's it's as expensive as it was before
- 11:53Speaker 2: they chopped it. Anyway, you know what.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I hate about this studio as opposed to my radio studios,
- 11:58Speaker 1: is I don't have when you get boring, I don't
- 12:00Speaker 1: have the music to fade up.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Trust me.
- 12:03Speaker 1: We would be about five minutes into Bloody You're the
- 12:06Speaker 1: Voice by John Farnival's I'm.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That good song?
- 12:09Speaker 1: O is it?
- 12:10Speaker 2: I'd appreciate being faded to fun.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It's an interesting one. It's an interesting climate that we're
- 12:15Speaker 1: in because electricity prices are kind of going. I don't
- 12:19Speaker 1: know what it's like in Melbourne, but I know in
- 12:21Speaker 1: Sydney there was a lot of energy providers going, well,
- 12:24Speaker 1: we're just gonna shut down. We're just gonna if people
- 12:27Speaker 1: are like stop, can you people stop?
- 12:30Speaker 2: We're in a weird place.
- 12:31Speaker 1: We're in a very weird place, and especially with I
- 12:34Speaker 1: think a lot of people are now realizing, especially with Tesla,
- 12:37Speaker 1: that the infrastructure that they've got set up is far
- 12:40Speaker 1: superior than say, charge Fox. I didn't realize this, but
- 12:44Speaker 1: is do charge Fox have advertising on their or are
- 12:48Speaker 1: they have? They got some sort of affiliation with NRMA.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I think NRAMA invests in them, right, I don't think
- 12:55Speaker 2: they do any advertising. I know what you think of.
- 12:57Speaker 2: There is a mob that have launched that he's doing
- 12:59Speaker 2: advertising on their charges. A bit silly because it's not
- 13:02Speaker 2: like a petrol station where you have to stand there
- 13:05Speaker 2: while you're filling the car for three or four minutes
- 13:07Speaker 2: with an EV. You plug it in and go sit
- 13:09Speaker 2: back in the car. You don't stand there watching the
- 13:10Speaker 2: screen while stuff's happening.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So I've just seen a lot of in RMA screens
- 13:15Speaker 1: on these charge Fox oh yes situations, and I'm like
- 13:18Speaker 1: the way it's set up at the moment, Like we
- 13:21Speaker 1: know they're famously going through issues with upkeeping all that
- 13:26Speaker 1: sort of stuff. I'm like, God, if I was an RMA,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to be associated with that. I wouldn't
- 13:31Speaker 1: want my brand all over something that's just not sitting there. Yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 1: like a piece of shit not working.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I think that that Tesla has that advantage.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Unfortunately for Tesla customers that they're looking to open their
- 13:41Speaker 2: network up to other brands at a premium, So more
- 13:45Speaker 2: money for Tesla, but more inconvenience for Tesla owners because
- 13:48Speaker 2: now when you rock up to a supercharger. So last
- 13:51Speaker 2: night in the model why I drove down to Geelong
- 13:53Speaker 2: where they have what's called a V three supercharger. It's
- 13:55Speaker 2: the fastest one they do. I want to test it
- 13:57Speaker 2: out see how it went. And when I got there
- 14:00Speaker 2: were two other Teslas and I think it has availability
- 14:02Speaker 2: for six, so three of us in total. You can
- 14:05Speaker 2: just imagine that if all of a sudden this opens
- 14:07Speaker 2: up to the public and you rock up to charge
- 14:08Speaker 2: a Tesla on their proprietary setup, that you're going to
- 14:12Speaker 2: have to sit there and wait for someone with the
- 14:14Speaker 2: Henda Kona to leave. And the problem as well with
- 14:17Speaker 2: some of these other Brandshona you have to like disinfect
- 14:21Speaker 2: the spot and stuff.
- 14:22Speaker 1: God.
- 14:23Speaker 2: But the problem is that a lot of these other
- 14:24Speaker 2: evs charge at a much slower rate. So it's not
- 14:27Speaker 2: that you're going to have to wait for them to
- 14:28Speaker 2: finish charging. You're gonna have to wait for them to
- 14:30Speaker 2: finish charging at a much slower rate, so they might
- 14:32Speaker 2: be there for an hour and a half potentially. So
- 14:34Speaker 2: I think that while that's an advantage of the moment,
- 14:36Speaker 2: it will eventually become less of an advantage for Tesla owners.
- 14:39Speaker 1: When that situation goes down. Do you just kick back
- 14:42Speaker 1: in your car and watch like your own YouTube videos
- 14:45Speaker 1: and pull your pants down?
- 14:46Speaker 2: I generally watch those while I'm driving.
- 14:50Speaker 1: It's it's an interesting situation. So we know the pricing's
- 14:53Speaker 1: gone up, we know the waight time's gone up. Now
- 14:57Speaker 1: there's an autopilot option that general when you buy these,
- 15:00Speaker 1: it's like a ten grand package, which I looked at
- 15:04Speaker 1: that myself. Ande was like, nah, I just I don't know.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Something weird about a car driving itself at this point
- 15:10Speaker 1: in time. I'm like, no, thank you.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it kind of doesn't even drive itself either.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And this is the funny thing. I was watching some
- 15:16Speaker 2: of the people who were ordering these, and they were
- 15:18Speaker 2: talking about how they've optioned it with the full self drive.
- 15:21Speaker 2: It's called the full self driving package ironically even though
- 15:23Speaker 2: it doesn't. And I was thinking to myself, to these
- 15:26Speaker 2: people not know anything about basic maps, because if you
- 15:29Speaker 2: add that on to the price of the car before
- 15:32Speaker 2: you buy it, you're pushing the recommended retail price of
- 15:34Speaker 2: the car up by ten grand, which means you're going
- 15:36Speaker 2: to pay more tax and potentially more luxury car tax
- 15:40Speaker 2: depending on how expensive the car is. So it seems
- 15:43Speaker 2: like an odd thing. So if you do, if you
- 15:44Speaker 2: are listening to this and you are planning on buying
- 15:46Speaker 2: that full self driving thing, because it's a software update.
- 15:49Speaker 2: All of the cars come with the hardware for it,
- 15:51Speaker 2: it's just a software update, do it after you've bought
- 15:53Speaker 2: the car, because then all you pay is ten thousand
- 15:55Speaker 2: dollars instead of ten thousand plus luxury car tax plus
- 15:58Speaker 2: stamp duty plus bluff plus plus. So you're better off
- 16:01Speaker 2: just waiting until you've purchased the car. But what they've
- 16:04Speaker 2: now done they announce this shortly after this went on sale,
- 16:08Speaker 2: that they're splitting that package up. So ten thousand dollars
- 16:10Speaker 2: used to get you navigation on autopilot, which means you
- 16:13Speaker 2: can put in a destination and it will navigate automatically
- 16:16Speaker 2: to that destination without you having to intervene. Auto lane change,
- 16:20Speaker 2: which is where you just touch the indicator will change
- 16:22Speaker 2: lanes on its own, Auto Park Summon which is where
- 16:26Speaker 2: the car comes out of the parks, where the car
- 16:29Speaker 2: comes out of the park using the app, and then
- 16:31Speaker 2: Smart Summon, which you can use in a car park
- 16:33Speaker 2: for the car to drive itself to you while you're
- 16:36Speaker 2: not near it. And then the other two were traffic
- 16:38Speaker 2: light and stop signal control, so it would look at
- 16:41Speaker 2: traffic lights and come to a stop if it was red.
- 16:43Speaker 2: So they've now split it up so that you have
- 16:45Speaker 2: a five thousand dollars option which is called Enhanced Autopilot,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and that includes navigation on autopilot, auto lane change, Auto parks, Summon,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and Smart Summon.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That is a more Yeah, that's most of what you
- 16:56Speaker 1: kind of yeah going to get if you pay the
- 16:58Speaker 1: ten grand anyway.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a much more realistic price to pay because
- 17:01Speaker 2: a lot of other manufacturers like Polstarbile charge roughly that
- 17:04Speaker 2: for some of those features, and to me, stuff like
- 17:06Speaker 2: auto sorry, auto park and Summoner are kind of useful.
- 17:11Speaker 2: But keep in mind that every Tesla actually comes with autopilot,
- 17:14Speaker 2: so you don't have to pay extra for it, So
- 17:16Speaker 2: it's like a patch exactly. So let's talk about the
- 17:20Speaker 2: actual car. The model WI. So I picked you up
- 17:21Speaker 2: from the airport today.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Can I just backtrack for a second. Is there the autopilot,
- 17:27Speaker 1: say in Australia. Is that different from say the autopilot
- 17:29Speaker 1: in America.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Yes. So in the States they have what's called FSD beta,
- 17:34Speaker 2: so full self driving beta. This is where it will
- 17:36Speaker 2: basically drive on city streets on its own.
- 17:38Speaker 1: The only reason I know that is because on porn
- 17:41Speaker 1: Harb there's people with this set while they're having a
- 17:44Speaker 1: root in the backseat, and that to me was like,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'll have a Tesla.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Yes, Now all you need to do is find someone
- 17:50Speaker 2: to have.
- 17:50Speaker 1: A root with it exactly. Unfortunately your maid was too busy.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But yeah, this full self driving. The reason I'm not
- 17:58Speaker 2: a fan of it is you look at the videos
- 18:00Speaker 2: on YouTube of some of the stuff that goes wrong,
- 18:03Speaker 2: and Tesla has famously moved away from radars and lighter
- 18:06Speaker 2: so it is just a camera out everything. And there
- 18:10Speaker 2: are instances where the car will suddenly swerve towards a
- 18:13Speaker 2: concrete pillar or oncoming traffic where the driver has to
- 18:17Speaker 2: intervene and I'm like, what the fuck is this?
- 18:20Speaker 1: It's like the car's gone. I can't do this anymore.
- 18:23Speaker 1: You can't do I can't do that. You've got like
- 18:26Speaker 1: Paul's playlist on Spotify, You've saved all these freaking videos.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I can't I'm just going to drive myself into a
- 18:31Speaker 1: wall and burn to death.
- 18:32Speaker 2: But that's the thing. They this type of stuff is
- 18:36Speaker 2: what car companies tested, a proving ground with engineers who
- 18:39Speaker 2: know what to do when it all goes wrong. When
- 18:41Speaker 2: you put it in the hands of public who are
- 18:43Speaker 2: told you have to have your hands on the wheel.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Most of them don't in these videos, and it's only
- 18:48Speaker 2: a matter of time until something something happens and we're
- 18:51Speaker 2: all sort of screwed.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So as an engineer, does that really get on your
- 18:54Speaker 1: own nerves? She'd got in the hands of the public
- 18:58Speaker 1: as an engineer watching fellow and is designed this marvel
- 19:02Speaker 1: of a car.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Tee where it annoys me. I don't care if they
- 19:05Speaker 2: do it and they hurt themselves, couldn't care less. It's
- 19:07Speaker 2: if I'm on the road and the thing swerves towards
- 19:10Speaker 2: me while I'm just driving. That's where I've got a
- 19:12Speaker 2: problem with it. Sure, yeah, but that's that's it. So
- 19:17Speaker 2: what were your first impressions when I picked you up?
- 19:19Speaker 2: In the model. Why I'd rather get a cab that
- 19:23Speaker 2: was technically your free cab.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah. One thing I will say is, and I noticed
- 19:29Speaker 1: these comments coming through when you were when you were
- 19:31Speaker 1: sort of showcasing it to the world on your socials.
- 19:34Speaker 1: She's a thick girl, isn't she. I mean, if Lizo
- 19:39Speaker 1: was a car. You don't know who. Yes, I'm going
- 19:46Speaker 1: to show your.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Photo male or female. Jesus Christ is amazing.
- 19:51Speaker 1: You don't know who? Do you listen to? Do you
- 19:53Speaker 1: consume music? Listen to the Beach Boys? The Beach Boys
- 19:58Speaker 1: are anything and smooth. M Okay, okay, this is Lizzo.
- 20:04Speaker 1: She's okay, hang on one second.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I'm so sorry if you've fallen asleep by this point.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Gordon's trying to use a phone.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Just give you a bit of time to crack your jokes. Okay,
- 20:16Speaker 1: this is Lizzo.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Oh, I see.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Paul's got an erection.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Okay, interesting?
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, interesting, obviously she's just showing you the trunk there. Yes,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and then that is the fronk for sure? Is that
- 20:31Speaker 1: is a feature that the Tesla doesn't have that it's
- 20:34Speaker 1: called the.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Wow. Okay, so I see what you mean, and look
- 20:41Speaker 2: I I personally, styling is subjective, but I personally don't
- 20:45Speaker 2: like the look of it. But yourself, But to me,
- 20:49Speaker 2: it's one of those things where I don't really care.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Once I'm inside, I can't see it, so it doesn't
- 20:53Speaker 2: bother me too much. But no, I don't love the
- 20:55Speaker 2: styling of it. But practically it's excellent. Like when you
- 21:00Speaker 2: you have a look at this compared to the EV
- 21:01Speaker 2: six of the ON five, when I open the boot
- 21:04Speaker 2: in this, it is huge and it's got heaps of
- 21:07Speaker 2: underfloor storage. It has storage at the front. When you're inside,
- 21:11Speaker 2: it's got a flat floor. There is heaps of room.
- 21:13Speaker 2: In the second row, there's heaps of headroom. It looks silly,
- 21:17Speaker 2: but it's practical in the way that it's designed. So
- 21:20Speaker 2: to me, that was what's important for us in terms
- 21:22Speaker 2: of more room, more height, et cetera. So from that
- 21:25Speaker 2: point of view, I like it, but I understand that
- 21:28Speaker 2: styling wise, it may not appeal to everybody.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I'm totally agreed. Like the outside just looks
- 21:35Speaker 1: I think frumpy was a great way to describe it.
- 21:39Speaker 1: It does kind of look like a chubby Model three, yes,
- 21:46Speaker 1: but on the inside it's fantastic. Like everything's great from
- 21:50Speaker 1: the seating, the the interior in these, which we're going
- 21:53Speaker 1: to talk about this with the with the Model three
- 21:55Speaker 1: as well, but it is it's minimalist. There's like this, yeah. Yes,
- 22:00Speaker 1: the general opinion when driving one of these is it's
- 22:02Speaker 1: very much not driving a car. You're driving a computer.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You're driving a laptop. Yeah, I reckon, And it's it's
- 22:08Speaker 1: such a minimalist car and it's in every single way possible.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Well, there are two buttons, yeah, literally steering well and
- 22:16Speaker 2: then the two steeringweel buttons, and they act as different things.
- 22:19Speaker 2: So you know in a normal car, how you have
- 22:20Speaker 2: a volume control and it just does a volume with this.
- 22:23Speaker 2: When you're driving, you've got volume and cruise control and
- 22:27Speaker 2: voice control depending on how you press them. But then
- 22:29Speaker 2: if you want to change your steering position or mirrors,
- 22:31Speaker 2: when you go into the menu, the steering wheel controls,
- 22:33Speaker 2: actors controls for those things depending on what you've selected.
- 22:36Speaker 2: So the thing that I think it desperately misses out
- 22:39Speaker 2: on is a head up display. And I know that
- 22:41Speaker 2: Tesla's like, oh, it doesn't need it. It's like, well,
- 22:44Speaker 2: you actually do, especially in Victoria where you'll get done
- 22:46Speaker 2: for doing a kilometer an hour over the speed limit.
- 22:48Speaker 2: The speed I was so tiny and in the top
- 22:50Speaker 2: corner of the screen. Even stuff like the blind spot
- 22:53Speaker 2: camera when you put it on your hand is in
- 22:55Speaker 2: the way of the camera, so when you look down
- 22:57Speaker 2: you can't even see the camera until you move your hands.
- 22:59Speaker 2: So it's stuff like that where they're trying to be
- 23:01Speaker 2: too cool for school, and it would all just be
- 23:03Speaker 2: fixed with a display ahead of the driver or a
- 23:06Speaker 2: head up display like Kerer or Yen Day users that
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think that it really would need to benefit from,
- 23:11Speaker 2: because at the moment it's it just is clumsy in
- 23:14Speaker 2: some of the things that it does.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I think at least to that center screen could at
- 23:19Speaker 1: least be somewhat customizable, like if you want the if
- 23:22Speaker 1: you want the speedo for instance, to be larger, you
- 23:24Speaker 1: should be able to It shouldn't be too hard to
- 23:27Speaker 1: make something like that. Keep it in the same spot
- 23:29Speaker 1: if you want, but just make the font bigger or
- 23:31Speaker 1: something like that.
- 23:31Speaker 2: What they've done they recently updated that whole display to
- 23:35Speaker 2: be completely different to what it is today, sorry to
- 23:37Speaker 2: what it was prior to their update. What they've done
- 23:40Speaker 2: is they've focused more on the driver display that shows
- 23:43Speaker 2: all the other cars around you and all the autopilot functions.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Great down the track when everything is driving on its own,
- 23:48Speaker 2: but at the moment they've sacrificed the speedo size that shrunk,
- 23:51Speaker 2: they've sacrificed the map size that shrunk as well, all
- 23:54Speaker 2: to make that section bigger.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And it's just it's useless.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It is it is used. It's like, oh, there's a
- 24:00Speaker 2: connext to me. I can see there's a current in
- 24:01Speaker 2: front of me as well, like I have eyes. So
- 24:04Speaker 2: it is a fairly pointless function if you're just driving
- 24:06Speaker 2: ninety percent of the time. So yeah, I think there
- 24:09Speaker 2: needs to be a bit of work done to that
- 24:11Speaker 2: functionality for it to actually be usable, because it is
- 24:13Speaker 2: very distracting at the moment while you're driving. If you
- 24:15Speaker 2: want to try and change radio station or even change
- 24:18Speaker 2: the climate controls, you have to be so precise with
- 24:20Speaker 2: where you click. Yeah. Yeah, it's just really not good.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I think that was my big ripe was the interior
- 24:26Speaker 1: was minimalis but it was almost too far and to
- 24:29Speaker 1: the point where I mean you do get used to
- 24:32Speaker 1: things like the basics of changing climate control or whatever.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I hated the maps at the start, I was like,
- 24:39Speaker 1: I don't like these maps. I use Google Maps a lot,
- 24:41Speaker 1: and driving in Sydney's traffic, I've got no idea where
- 24:45Speaker 1: I live after seven years. But you know you were
- 24:48Speaker 1: telling me when we jumped in this morning. It is
- 24:50Speaker 1: Google Maps. It's just kind of a different interface, but
- 24:54Speaker 1: it's a shit interface. It's just it's like the weird
- 24:57Speaker 1: thing is when you've got the tech to kind of
- 24:59Speaker 1: when you've got a screen like where it's got the
- 25:01Speaker 1: vehicle visualization, it looks it's an okay map, but I
- 25:08Speaker 1: think it could be way better.
- 25:09Speaker 2: So with the map as well, I'll typically use it
- 25:11Speaker 2: just on navigation the whole time, so I'll put in
- 25:14Speaker 2: my destination because it will route you around things. So
- 25:16Speaker 2: the other day when I was driving to Geelong to
- 25:18Speaker 2: test out that charger, there was a heap of traffic
- 25:20Speaker 2: on the freeway and it took me off down some
- 25:22Speaker 2: back roads and I got to avoid all the stationary traffic.
- 25:25Speaker 2: So from that front, it's great. It sort of does
- 25:27Speaker 2: all that. That stuff's not free either, so if you
- 25:29Speaker 2: buy one today, there's a subscription fee for the online services.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So if you want to stream video like Netflix or YouTube,
- 25:37Speaker 2: have Spotify and also have the traffic on the maps
- 25:40Speaker 2: and the satellite overlays. You have to pay ten bucks
- 25:43Speaker 2: a month.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Really, yeah, so for instance, I've already got say Spotify,
- 25:49Speaker 1: Amazon all that, right.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, they're charging you for the data. So really it's
- 25:54Speaker 2: it sounds like they're charging you for the services, but
- 25:56Speaker 2: all the services are free. In theory, it's just the
- 25:58Speaker 2: data they charge you for ten dolls and other covers
- 26:01Speaker 2: the amount of data you could potentially stream through Netflix.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So they work on a law of averages. If you
- 26:06Speaker 2: sat there and stream Netflix for a month straight, you
- 26:09Speaker 2: would it well and truly exceed the ten dollars a
- 26:11Speaker 2: month they've done. But as a law of average is
- 26:13Speaker 2: over a year, for the two or three times you'll
- 26:15Speaker 2: use Netflix, there's enough money there to cover your data use.
- 26:18Speaker 2: So you've got to think that there's twenty thousand of
- 26:21Speaker 2: these cars in Australia, there's a million globally that have
- 26:24Speaker 2: been sold just in the last year. If they all
- 26:27Speaker 2: have a data sim inside them and Tesla's paying for that,
- 26:30Speaker 2: the ten bucks a month is now offsetting that cost.
- 26:33Speaker 1: So it's basically like if you've got Apple Car Plane,
- 26:35Speaker 1: Android Auto in your car, you're running it off your
- 26:38Speaker 1: phone effectively because you're mirroring your phone. Yeah, you're paying
- 26:41Speaker 1: for it anyway in a way, So still frustrating.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Well, how did you go with the Model three? Which
- 26:45Speaker 2: spec did you drive?
- 26:46Speaker 1: Ah? The speck was the base Model three.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so that basically matches up with the Model y.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I think the Model why price wise is like five
- 26:54Speaker 2: grand more or something like that for all the extra
- 26:56Speaker 2: space you get. So yeah, what did you think of
- 26:59Speaker 2: the Model three?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Look, I've been shitting on this car for a long
- 27:02Speaker 1: time and I've sat in it many times before, and
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'd never driven it.
- 27:09Speaker 2: And I've loved it.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I loved it. Yeah, Paul was, Yeah, he
- 27:14Speaker 1: loved it. Yes, Yes, do you know, I will say,
- 27:18Speaker 1: on the sort of scale of I guess cars, you might,
- 27:21Speaker 1: let's say you've got internal combustion cars at one end
- 27:24Speaker 1: and you've got sort of this EV sort of scale
- 27:27Speaker 1: of one end. Tesla needs to be at the very
- 27:30Speaker 1: end because it is very much its own entity. It's
- 27:33Speaker 1: very much like iPhone v Android.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I think you're right. A lot of other
- 27:38Speaker 2: car brands that do evs, they try and do it
- 27:41Speaker 2: differently for the sake of being different, and I just
- 27:44Speaker 2: don't know that it has the same effect. Although I
- 27:48Speaker 2: think BMW is doing a good job, I don't I
- 27:50Speaker 2: think the way that they integrate EV in some of
- 27:52Speaker 2: their cars. I just drove the I four and I
- 27:55Speaker 2: think that feels and drives like a four series, and
- 27:57Speaker 2: the interior looks just like any other BMUBA So that
- 28:00Speaker 2: kind of thing's not too bad. But yeah, I think that, Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 2: they are sort of polar opposites.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I think the key is that they're making evs from
- 28:08Speaker 1: the ground up. They're not doing what did you call
- 28:10Speaker 1: it the other day, compliance cars, h compliance ev right,
- 28:13Speaker 1: compliance evs. These are dedicated platforms to an EV and
- 28:17Speaker 1: it makes a lot of a difference.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Because let me explain why they do compliance evs, especially
- 28:23Speaker 2: in Europe. So Tesla has just finished building Gigaberlin, which
- 28:27Speaker 2: is their factory in Europe in Germany, and that was
- 28:31Speaker 2: almost entirely paid for by another car company. So that
- 28:36Speaker 2: may sound ridiculous, but in Europe, if your overall fleet
- 28:40Speaker 2: of cars averages are higher emission than the whatever the
- 28:45Speaker 2: limit is that European commissioners set, you have to pay
- 28:48Speaker 2: penalties to car companies that have exceeded the requirement. Because
- 28:53Speaker 2: Tesla only makes evs, they naturally exceed the requirement easily. Yes,
- 28:58Speaker 2: so another car company has basically paid all this money
- 29:01Speaker 2: in fines to Tesla, and Tesla used that money to
- 29:04Speaker 2: build a new factory. Wow. So that's why they're rushing
- 29:07Speaker 2: out to make these compliance evs. They may not be good,
- 29:10Speaker 2: but it means they can sell a car that's an
- 29:12Speaker 2: EV that brings their average down. They pay less in fines.
- 29:15Speaker 1: It's political correct, shock correct.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I want to talk about the Model why though about
- 29:21Speaker 2: the things I didn't like In addition to that infotainment stuff.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I just want to quickly backtrack. For instance, a few
- 29:26Speaker 1: things I did love about the Model three was which
- 29:28Speaker 1: I think a lot of like cars in general should
- 29:31Speaker 1: be taking on. There's a lot of things I didn't like,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but the few things that I loved was things like
- 29:37Speaker 1: they're essentially making the key obsolete. Yes, and like it's
- 29:40Speaker 1: a card at the very least it's generally off your
- 29:43Speaker 1: phone or just like you carry your phone everywhere you are,
- 29:48Speaker 1: or your wallet or whatever, so the card can stick
- 29:50Speaker 1: in your wallet, the phones in your pocket. Anyway, you
- 29:53Speaker 1: just need to really be around the car to drive
- 29:56Speaker 1: the thing. You know, you don't need to push anything,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you don't need to do anything. You literally just need
- 30:01Speaker 1: to sit in it and go. It's incredibly well thought out.
- 30:07Speaker 1: It sort of blows my mind that especially EVS, even
- 30:10Speaker 1: a proximity sensing key generally doesn't open up your car properly,
- 30:14Speaker 1: like it'll unlock it. But I mean, for instance, with
- 30:17Speaker 1: my sting, I don't know why, but it'll open. It'll
- 30:20Speaker 1: unlock the car, but unless you've got to push the
- 30:22Speaker 1: button on the thing to properly open it.
- 30:25Speaker 2: But that's a good point with the phone app because
- 30:28Speaker 2: for me, when we owned down Model three, I didn't
- 30:30Speaker 2: even have the card. I don't know, it just sat
- 30:32Speaker 2: in the thing at home. But with the app, I
- 30:35Speaker 2: can give access to people to drive the car, even
- 30:39Speaker 2: if they don't have a Tesla. So I can send
- 30:41Speaker 2: you access to drive my car and then all you
- 30:44Speaker 2: do is just take your phone to the car and
- 30:45Speaker 2: it will unlock and start and do everything that it
- 30:47Speaker 2: needs to do, and then you can track the car.
- 30:50Speaker 2: You can send destinations to it through the app as well.
- 30:52Speaker 2: The app is probably one of the best features of
- 30:55Speaker 2: the car in general.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Yeah, there's so many things, even just that the cameras
- 30:59Speaker 1: around it. I hadn't noticed before, but if somebody comes
- 31:02Speaker 1: close to you in say a parking lot, it'll automatically
- 31:05Speaker 1: start filming, So before it hits you, it pretty much
- 31:10Speaker 1: knows who's going to do that. Somebody scratches your car,
- 31:12Speaker 1: it's going to like record that. At very least at
- 31:15Speaker 1: the very foundations of this car. It is easily the
- 31:20Speaker 1: most intelligent, well thought out and articulated car out there,
- 31:25Speaker 1: and there is a lot of car manufacturers that should
- 31:27Speaker 1: be taking on board not only features, but the whole
- 31:32Speaker 1: ethos of this car. The thing that I guess I
- 31:37Speaker 1: didn't like is in general, there's just such an inane
- 31:41Speaker 1: kind of design.
- 31:42Speaker 2: It's just generic.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so it's so very eye robot And even
- 31:47Speaker 1: if you shell out for the performance one, you kind
- 31:49Speaker 1: of wanted to look performance. You want it to look cooler,
- 31:53Speaker 1: and they just don't have that. There are, especially in
- 31:55Speaker 1: the US, a lot of companies that will do custom
- 31:57Speaker 1: stuff just for the Tesla's but you kind of wanted
- 32:00Speaker 1: to just look I just wish they looked cooler.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Yeah you know what I mean. Yeah, on stuff I
- 32:06Speaker 2: didn't like with the Model Y, the ride is horrendous
- 32:09Speaker 2: I read a whole bunch of European reviews because it's
- 32:11Speaker 2: been out there for a little while now, and I
- 32:12Speaker 2: thought it can't be that bad far out. The car
- 32:15Speaker 2: that we had was a base model. It had the
- 32:18Speaker 2: optional twenty inch OI wheel. It comes downard with nineteen's.
- 32:21Speaker 2: The ride was so firm that I kind of liken
- 32:24Speaker 2: it to my scale of car firmness is like Mercedes
- 32:28Speaker 2: bends at one end, which is a little too soft,
- 32:30Speaker 2: to BMWM product at the other end. And this was
- 32:33Speaker 2: like that's a track car. Yeah, this was like a
- 32:35Speaker 2: bmw X three am. It was so unnecessarily firm. And
- 32:40Speaker 2: the end result of that is you have a family suv.
- 32:43Speaker 2: If you've got a baby in there, you fear hitting
- 32:45Speaker 2: a pothole because you'll eject them out of the roof
- 32:48Speaker 2: like it is. It is just shocking. So and that's
- 32:50Speaker 2: partly due to forty four PSI on the tires. They
- 32:53Speaker 2: have to run a high pressure for efficiency. It now
- 32:57Speaker 2: runs Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires on the twenty inch wheel,
- 33:00Speaker 2: which tire well, no, they've got foam inside and they
- 33:04Speaker 2: also have stiffer sidewalls, again for efficiency. So all of
- 33:08Speaker 2: that results in a very firm ride. The trade off
- 33:11Speaker 2: there is that it handles great, so when we drive
- 33:13Speaker 2: it at the proven ground, it handled incredibly well for
- 33:15Speaker 2: a big suv, but I just think it's way too
- 33:18Speaker 2: firm for a family suv. So the one I've bought,
- 33:21Speaker 2: and just in case you don't know, i've bought one,
- 33:23Speaker 2: the one I bought was a base model with the
- 33:25Speaker 2: nineteens because I need a little bit of comfort. Our
- 33:28Speaker 2: Model three was also too firm, and I didn't want
- 33:30Speaker 2: to go down the path of the performance because it
- 33:31Speaker 2: has twenty one incha loo whels, which would even worse.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So Tesla really needs an adaptive damping package. So with BMWs,
- 33:38Speaker 2: generally you can fix the ride by ticking the adaptive
- 33:41Speaker 2: damping or air suspension option and then that smooths it
- 33:44Speaker 2: out when it is in comfort, whereas the Tesla things
- 33:46Speaker 2: just firm all the time. That's what you come with,
- 33:50Speaker 2: and I recommend if you have bought one, please take
- 33:52Speaker 2: it for a test drive. The test drives are available now.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Actually you drive it before it gets delivered, because this
- 33:57Speaker 2: might be enough for people to actually just cancel their
- 33:59Speaker 2: order and go do something else, because it may just
- 34:02Speaker 2: become tiring enough that you don't want to have to
- 34:03Speaker 2: live with that ride.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Did you get a chance to drive it before you
- 34:06Speaker 1: bought it? No Ah, So you bought it and then
- 34:09Speaker 1: you drove it.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's the thing. I'll probably still keep it anyway,
- 34:12Speaker 2: just based on the nineteen should be better. So we'll
- 34:15Speaker 2: see how that goes, hoping.
- 34:17Speaker 1: For the best. How did you expect this car?
- 34:20Speaker 2: It was just it was just the base one.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. But like, did you go with the car.
- 34:25Speaker 2: And the color that we have outside, which is midnight something?
- 34:28Speaker 1: Yeah, metallic, so that's the color. I would have chosen
- 34:31Speaker 1: that or black, but I would have gone the black wheels.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Well that's the thing. The black wheels are the
- 34:35Speaker 2: only ones you can get on that on the twenties. So,
- 34:38Speaker 2: which is a little bit frustrated, And.
- 34:39Speaker 1: You don't you don't like the wine interior because you
- 34:41Speaker 1: had it on your original model.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I do, but my wife didn't want it because if
- 34:45Speaker 2: we have a kid and shouldn't want to get dirty,
- 34:47Speaker 2: So we'll stick with it.
- 34:49Speaker 1: See that was my thing too, I said, if we're
- 34:51Speaker 1: going with this, I said, the white interior is going
- 34:54Speaker 1: to look shit, And she really wanted it. And I
- 34:56Speaker 1: was like, Wow, apparently it's pretty easy.
- 34:58Speaker 2: To clean that because they're vegan old things vegans.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Like, vegan is such a bullshit word. I know, it's
- 35:04Speaker 1: such a bull crab word.
- 35:05Speaker 2: It's's just vinyl.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just vinyl. It's just some crappy material that
- 35:10Speaker 1: hopefully will last a long time.
- 35:12Speaker 2: So let's talk about just a couple of other quick
- 35:15Speaker 2: tesla topics here, yes, sort of, before we wrap up.
- 35:19Speaker 2: We wrote a story about this hotel that's basically it's
- 35:23Speaker 2: a Queensland startup and it lets hotel guests borrow a
- 35:26Speaker 2: tesla for thirty dollars an hour, calling it just an
- 35:29Speaker 2: amenity that you can use as part of the hotel
- 35:32Speaker 2: startups called outbound. What do you think about that? It's
- 35:36Speaker 2: a hotel on the Gold Coast, thirty bucks an hour
- 35:38Speaker 2: is pretty reasonable, I reckon. Do you think that more
- 35:41Speaker 2: hotels should be adopting this type of thing?
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's a great idea. I think it's
- 35:45Speaker 1: a very good idea. This is a this isn't actually
- 35:48Speaker 1: too new, especially to Queensland, because I know that I'm
- 35:51Speaker 1: pretty sure there's a deal going with that. What's that
- 35:54Speaker 1: bloody Steve Irwin reptile, the Australian Reptile Australia Zoo. Right,
- 36:00Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that they've got a fleet of evs
- 36:04Speaker 1: that will take you from your hotel. They're pretty much
- 36:07Speaker 1: charged to go from say the park back to the hotel.
- 36:11Speaker 1: So I don't think it's that unique. It certainly is
- 36:14Speaker 1: with a Tesla, I guess. I think it's a good idea.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Why not. I mean, and it's good for tesla too,
- 36:18Speaker 1: because there's a lot of people that will go. I've
- 36:20Speaker 1: always wanted one, but I have never driven one. And
- 36:23Speaker 1: it's also like a it's a chance to hire a
- 36:26Speaker 1: car and also have a test drive as well.
- 36:28Speaker 2: It's also good for apartment buildings. I mean, if you
- 36:30Speaker 2: had a communal car there that you could hire per hour.
- 36:34Speaker 2: It's a car that is in the garage that you
- 36:36Speaker 2: just book in and take away with you.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I think it's also suit me with the hotels that
- 36:40Speaker 1: I get because I usually rent them for an hour,
- 36:42Speaker 1: and then if I can rent the car for an
- 36:44Speaker 1: hour as well, and Paul's made for an hour, it
- 36:50Speaker 1: works out pretty good.
- 36:51Speaker 2: This was very generous.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Yeah, clearly I'm a bit of a slow coach.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, I think. I think it's a good idea.
- 36:58Speaker 2: So the more of that, the more of that, the
- 37:00Speaker 2: better I reckon. And one thing that I wanted to
- 37:03Speaker 2: touch on as well that isn't really Tesla, but I
- 37:05Speaker 2: think is a valid valid point. Toyota is currently clashing
- 37:09Speaker 2: with its shareholders about a slow EV rollout and they're
- 37:13Speaker 2: doing some sort of North Korean style stuff here where
- 37:18Speaker 2: I think it was a Danish superannuation fund who invests
- 37:22Speaker 2: in Toyota. They basically criticized them at an investor presentation
- 37:26Speaker 2: and said, hey, what's going on with the EV rollout?
- 37:30Speaker 2: And Toyota got back to them and said, I'm so sorry.
- 37:33Speaker 2: The closing time for questions was yesterday, but it was
- 37:36Speaker 2: written nowhere that that's when you had to hand your
- 37:38Speaker 2: questions invite. Toyota is interesting though, so they were kind
- 37:44Speaker 2: of the they.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Were kind of or get your dribble bit or something.
- 37:49Speaker 2: They were kind of the starters of the electric game
- 37:52Speaker 2: with hybrid right with press and stuff like this. So
- 37:56Speaker 2: they've been in EV's for a while now, but they
- 37:58Speaker 2: haven't really been doing full lev's are being very hesitant
- 38:01Speaker 2: with that that they're big on hydrogen as well. There
- 38:04Speaker 2: argument about not going full ev IS because some parts
- 38:07Speaker 2: around the world won't be ready and may never be
- 38:10Speaker 2: ready for ev So if you think about some third
- 38:13Speaker 2: world countries where the powers out every ten seconds, they
- 38:16Speaker 2: use camp stoves as ovens and all that sort of stuff,
- 38:20Speaker 2: you're not going to have enough power to you just.
- 38:24Speaker 1: You know, look, I'm gonna have to cook with a
- 38:27Speaker 1: camb oven and you know, I live in a pretty
- 38:30Speaker 1: appalling sort of shanty town. But jeez, the new Toyota
- 38:33Speaker 1: land Cruiser looks good.
- 38:35Speaker 2: At least it's on an TV. Yeah, but yeah, I
- 38:37Speaker 2: think there's there are still some places around the world
- 38:39Speaker 2: where EV's may not work and may not ever work.
- 38:41Speaker 2: And I think Toyota is thinking about it from from
- 38:44Speaker 2: a way of Okay, if we can reduce the economies
- 38:46Speaker 2: of scale on cheaper engines and perhaps have hybrids as
- 38:49Speaker 2: well that bridge the gap, then why not. But it
- 38:52Speaker 2: shareholders don't seem to agree with that, So what are
- 38:54Speaker 2: your thoughts?
- 38:55Speaker 1: Look, I don't know, I don't really care at this point.
- 38:58Speaker 1: I think that they clearly no stuff that we don't.
- 39:03Speaker 1: You know, they're making business decisions, higher scale business decisions
- 39:06Speaker 1: that they've probably got a good point. There's probably a
- 39:09Speaker 1: lot of countries that an EV wouldn't work in. I mean,
- 39:11Speaker 1: Australia is moving so quickly and our infrastructure is so slow.
- 39:16Speaker 1: At one point, you know, six months ago, the general
- 39:19Speaker 1: consensus was we're not really that ready for evs either,
- 39:22Speaker 1: So probably yeah. I mean I can't exactly see myself
- 39:26Speaker 1: going on holiday to Vietnam and going around in a
- 39:29Speaker 1: bloody Tesla or something like that, So you know, I
- 39:31Speaker 1: think I think they're probably right. I think there's some
- 39:33Speaker 1: countries that are good sort of twenty years at least.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know, it's it is an interesting one.
- 39:39Speaker 2: So well, Yeah, I hope you enjoyed our Tesla Special.
- 39:44Speaker 1: I certainly did not.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, if you have any questions, contact at the
- 39:48Speaker 2: Drive Show dot com dot I use send us your questions.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Let us know what you want to know about. You know,
- 39:53Speaker 2: you want to know more about Tesla's, more evs, anything
- 39:57Speaker 2: you want to know less about West Tesla's less EV's.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Contact at the Drive Show dot com today year as.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Weeks and here's an email that's coming through. Let's Paul, please,
- 40:06Speaker 1: you know, wh while we're talking about Toyota, I kind
- 40:09Speaker 1: of I kind of zoned out and I was thinking
- 40:11Speaker 1: Toyota Supra the the Newness and Z.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Who that would be good. Yeah. Big price difference though,
- 40:18Speaker 2: because the Z is now going to be cheaper, much
- 40:21Speaker 2: cheaper than the Super, so I think globally that's going
- 40:24Speaker 2: to put a lot of pressure on Toyota in terms
- 40:26Speaker 2: of super pricing, which will be interesting.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Have you touched the Z yet?
- 40:30Speaker 2: No, not yet.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I've seen video footage of it and it sounds unreal.
- 40:33Speaker 2: It looks good as well.
- 40:34Speaker 1: It sounds so good, looks great. Just trying to like
- 40:38Speaker 1: you get out okay, yeah, look, I'm just going through
- 40:44Speaker 1: some of the messages that we're getting. It's generally more episodes. Please, hey, Felers,
- 40:49Speaker 1: love the podcast, wondering if you have a chance to
- 40:51Speaker 1: get your hands on the audi RS three for a review.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Also in the next twelve months, I will be definitely
- 40:58Speaker 1: buying a new Arranger Wrapped as Paul. I think it's
- 41:01Speaker 1: a beast. Please let me know if you have any
- 41:04Speaker 1: more car news, any more news in car journalism land
- 41:07Speaker 1: about a rumor of AH the Ranger Raptor being updated
- 41:11Speaker 1: by is it herod Performance?
- 41:14Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I haven't heard that, but that sounds cool.
- 41:17Speaker 2: I know fucking English.
- 41:22Speaker 1: This is what happens. He gets a little drunk and
- 41:24Speaker 1: does cocaine before each show.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yes, but anyway, I know him and he does some
- 41:28Speaker 2: amazing stuff. What they did with the aspect was really awesome.
- 41:32Speaker 2: So I think he's very well qualified to be doing
- 41:34Speaker 2: some work on these So.
- 41:35Speaker 1: I give you, I give you a bit of shit
- 41:36Speaker 1: about sleeping with Jennifer Kied. Someone said no, she's moved
- 41:39Speaker 1: to Channel ten. Now, wow, that says a lot. She
- 41:41Speaker 1: obviously heard Paul's like, now signed to Channel seven. She's like,
- 41:45Speaker 1: I cannot deal with this secret dicking anymore. I'm moving channels.
- 41:49Speaker 1: She's always been a Peter hitching a guy. So I'm
- 41:52Speaker 1: just going through these messages. The general consensus too, A
- 41:54Speaker 1: lot of people are saying more apps, more often.
- 41:57Speaker 2: So okay, got plenty of time to just do that.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're doing the best way. To be honest,
- 42:02Speaker 1: I reckon it will eventually. I think it'll eventually get there. Yes, eventually.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Please make sure you send us an email or messages on.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Social yes, like subscribe, share ratings, tell everyone that would
- 42:15Speaker 1: be great. Good, Okay,
