- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Pursuit of Excellence, your Skills Training podcast,
- 0:04Speaker 1: brought to you by Podcast Lab Studios. I'm Brad, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: today we're diving into a mindset shift that can dramatically
- 0:12Speaker 1: elevate your performance, your growth, and your ability to master
- 0:17Speaker 1: any skill. The power of positive thinking. Skill development isn't
- 0:22Speaker 1: always smooth. Some days you feel motivated and unstoppable. Other
- 0:28Speaker 1: days progress feels slow, frustrating, or even out of reach.
- 0:33Speaker 1: But here's the truth. Your mindset is the engine behind
- 0:37Speaker 1: your growth. Positive thinking isn't about ignoring challenges or pretending
- 0:42Speaker 1: everything is perfect. It's about building a mental foundation strong
- 0:46Speaker 1: enough to support your goals, your habits, and your long
- 0:50Speaker 1: term success. A positive mindset helps you see setbacks as
- 0:54Speaker 1: stepping stones, not roadblocks. It boosts motivation, sharpens problem solving,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and strengthens resilience, all essential ingredients for learning new skills
- 1:06Speaker 1: or leveling up the ones you already have. When you
- 1:09Speaker 1: believe improvement is possible, you stay committed longer, push through obstacles,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and show up with clarity and confidence, and the benefits
- 1:20Speaker 1: don't stop at performance. Positive thinking reduces stress, improves relationships,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and supports better physical health. It creates a ripple effect
- 1:32Speaker 1: that touches every part of your life. In today's episode,
- 1:35Speaker 1: will break down how positive thinking works, why it matters,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and the practical ways you can use it to accelerate
- 1:42Speaker 1: your skill building journey. Whether you're tackling a new challenge,
- 1:47Speaker 1: working toward a personal goal, or navigating a tough moment,
- 1:51Speaker 1: this mindset will help you stay focused, driven, and ready
- 1:55Speaker 1: for growth. High performance psychology has been studied for decades,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and one pattern shows up again and again. People who
- 2:04Speaker 1: intentionally practice positive thinking outperform those who don't, not because
- 2:10Speaker 1: they're blindly optimistic, but because their mindset changes how their
- 2:15Speaker 1: brain processes challenge, stress, and opportunity. From a neurological standpoint,
- 2:22Speaker 1: positive thinking activates the prefrontal cortex, the part of the
- 2:25Speaker 1: brain responsible for decision making and focus and problem solving.
- 2:30Speaker 1: When high performers adopt a positive mindset, they experience lower
- 2:34Speaker 1: levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and higher levels of
- 2:39Speaker 1: dopamine and serotonin, which enhance motivation, learning, and emotional regulation.
- 2:46Speaker 1: This biochemical shift improves cognitive flexibility, meaning the brain becomes
- 2:51Speaker 1: better at adapting, strategizing, and finding solutions under pressure. In contrast,
- 2:58Speaker 1: negative thinking tricks the amygdala, the brain's threat center, now
- 3:03Speaker 1: which narrow's attention reduces creativity and makes challenges feel bigger
- 3:08Speaker 1: than they are. High performers who fall into negative thinking
- 3:12Speaker 1: cycles often experience mental fatigue faster, and struggle to maintain
- 3:18Speaker 1: consistent progress. Research from performance psychology also shows that positive
- 3:24Speaker 1: thinkers build skills more efficiently because they engage in growth
- 3:28Speaker 1: oriented behaviors. They're more likely to practice, deliberately, seek feedback,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and persist through difficulty all core components of mastery. Studies
- 3:40Speaker 1: on elite athletes, military operators, and top executives reveal that
- 3:46Speaker 1: those who use positive self talk, visualization, and reframing techniques
- 3:50Speaker 1: demonstrate higher resilience, faster recovery from mistakes, and stronger long
- 3:55Speaker 1: term performance. Meanwhile, individuals who rely on negative or self
- 4:01Speaker 1: critical thinking tend to avoid challenges, underestimate their abilities, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: disengage sooner, which slows skill acquisition and reduces overall achievement.
- 4:11Speaker 1: In short, positive thinking isn't motivational fluff. It's a measurable
- 4:16Speaker 1: performance enhancer. It strengthens the brain, improves emotional stability, and
- 4:21Speaker 1: fuels the behaviors that lead to excellence. Step one reframe
- 4:26Speaker 1: challenges as opportunities. When you're learning something new or tackling
- 4:32Speaker 1: a skill you struggled with, it's tempting to view obstacles
- 4:35Speaker 1: as proof of failure. It's easy to think maybe I'm
- 4:39Speaker 1: just not good enough or this is too hard. But
- 4:44Speaker 1: what if you flipped the script and saw those obstacles
- 4:47Speaker 1: as opportunities instead. Here's a personal story to illustrate this.
- 4:54Speaker 1: A few years ago, I decided to learn guitar. At first,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I struggled to get the chords right in my face,
- 5:00Speaker 1: felt clumsy and sore. It was frustrating when my progress
- 5:04Speaker 1: felt so slow, and I caught myself thinking maybe I'm
- 5:08Speaker 1: just not cut out for this. The temptation to give
- 5:12Speaker 1: up was strong, But instead of throwing in the towel,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I made a conscious effort to reframe that frustration. I
- 5:19Speaker 1: told myself that every mis note and awkward chord shape
- 5:23Speaker 1: was simply part of the learning process, not a sign
- 5:25Speaker 1: of failure. I decided to focus on progress, no matter
- 5:29Speaker 1: how small. I started celebrating small wins, like mastering a
- 5:35Speaker 1: single chord progression or playing a song without stopping. Each
- 5:39Speaker 1: small step helped me stay motivated, and more importantly, made
- 5:44Speaker 1: me enjoy the learning process. The next time you face challenges,
- 5:47Speaker 1: pause for a moment and reframe them. Remind yourself, this
- 5:51Speaker 1: isn't failure. This is an opportunity to grow stronger, smarter,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and more resilient. No matter how small the steps are,
- 5:59Speaker 1: each obstacle as a stepping stone toward progress, and every
- 6:02Speaker 1: effort you make brings you closer to success. By changing
- 6:06Speaker 1: how you view challenges, you can transform frustration into fuel
- 6:10Speaker 1: for growth. Step two, use positive self talk. The way
- 6:17Speaker 1: you speak to yourself matters more than you might realize.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Negative self talk can quietly sabotage your efforts, making challenges
- 6:25Speaker 1: feel bigger than they are, while positive self talk strengthens
- 6:29Speaker 1: your resolve and helps you focus on solutions rather than problems.
- 6:34Speaker 1: When I first started public speaking, I allowed anxiety to
- 6:37Speaker 1: dominate my thoughts. I tell myself I'm gonna mess up
- 6:42Speaker 1: or everyone's going to notice my mistakes, and the fear
- 6:45Speaker 1: would grow stronger. But when I started replacing those thoughts
- 6:50Speaker 1: with affirmations like I'm prepared, capable, and I know my material,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I noticed a real transformation in my confidence and performance.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It didn't happen overnight, but with consistent effort, those positive
- 7:05Speaker 1: statements became my default inner dialogue. In addition to using
- 7:09Speaker 1: positive self talk, I added small habits to reinforce my progress,
- 7:14Speaker 1: like practicing in front of a mirror or recording and
- 7:16Speaker 1: reviewing my speeches to see how much I was improving.
- 7:20Speaker 1: These steps, combined with positive self talk, gradually turn public
- 7:24Speaker 1: speaking into something I could approach with excitement rather than dread.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Start practicing positive self talk today. Instead of saying I'll
- 7:34Speaker 1: never get this right, try reframing it to I'm still learning,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and every attempt builds my skills. Over time, you'll find
- 7:44Speaker 1: that positivity becomes second nature, and it will empower you
- 7:49Speaker 1: to push through challenges with confidence. Step three Celebrate small wins.
- 7:58Speaker 1: One of the simplest ways to stay motivated is by
- 8:01Speaker 1: recognizing and celebrating your progress, even the smallest wins. Achieving
- 8:06Speaker 1: a big goal can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down
- 8:09Speaker 1: into smaller milestones makes it more manageable and rewarding. For example,
- 8:14Speaker 1: when tackling a particularly tough work project, my team encountered
- 8:18Speaker 1: multiple setbacks that made the process frustrating and exhausting. To
- 8:24Speaker 1: stay motivated, we decided to celebrate minor successes, like resolving
- 8:28Speaker 1: one specific issue, completing one part of the process, or
- 8:32Speaker 1: even hitting a small deadline. Each small win reminded us
- 8:37Speaker 1: that we were moving forward, even if progress was slow.
- 8:41Speaker 1: This approach energized us, kept morale high, and gave us
- 8:45Speaker 1: the momentum we needed to ultimately achieve our goal. Take
- 8:49Speaker 1: time to reflect on your own progress and reward yourself
- 8:52Speaker 1: along the way. Whether it's treating yourself to your favorite coffee,
- 8:56Speaker 1: taking a relaxing walk, or simply pausing to acknowledge I
- 9:00Speaker 1: did great today. These small celebrations can make a big difference.
- 9:05Speaker 1: They serve as reminders of how far you've come and
- 9:09Speaker 1: keep you motivated for the next step. Step four, focus
- 9:15Speaker 1: on self compassion. No one is perfect, and true growth
- 9:20Speaker 1: is never linear. It's essential to treat yourself with kindness
- 9:24Speaker 1: and understanding during moments of struggle or setbacks. Beating yourself
- 9:28Speaker 1: up from mistakes or delays only makes the journey harder.
- 9:32Speaker 1: When I started learning guitar, there were moments when I
- 9:35Speaker 1: didn't practice as much as I should have or felt
- 9:37Speaker 1: discouraged by my slow progress. I could have easily given up,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but instead I chose to practice self compassion rather than
- 9:47Speaker 1: criticizing myself. I asked, what small step can I take
- 9:51Speaker 1: today to get back on track. The small question shifted
- 9:55Speaker 1: my mindset and allowed me to continue without feeling overwhelmed.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Over time, I began to see real improvement, not from perfection,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but from steady, consistent effort. Remember, perfection isn't the goal.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Consistency and persistence are. Treat yourself with the same patience
- 10:13Speaker 1: and empathy you'd extend to a friend. Growth takes time,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and setbacks are part of the process. By embracing self compassion,
- 10:22Speaker 1: you'll find it easier to stay committed and enjoy the
- 10:26Speaker 1: journey as you work towards your goals. Step five practice
- 10:31Speaker 1: daily positivity. Cultivating a positive mindset takes consistent practice and intention.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Incorporating small, simple habits into your daily routine can make
- 10:44Speaker 1: a big difference in reinforcing a positive approach to learning, growth,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and overall well being. Start your day with positive affirmations
- 10:51Speaker 1: to set the tone. Try saying statements like I'm capable
- 10:56Speaker 1: of mastering new skills, I welcome challenges as opportunity or
- 11:01Speaker 1: today's another chance to improve. Speaking these affirmations out loud
- 11:06Speaker 1: or writing them down can help solidify your mindset. Another
- 11:10Speaker 1: powerful habit is journaling. At the end of each day,
- 11:14Speaker 1: take a few minutes to reflect and write down one win,
- 11:18Speaker 1: no matter how small or lesson you learned. This practice
- 11:22Speaker 1: not only helps you focus on progress, but also builds
- 11:25Speaker 1: gratitude and self awareness over time. You can also use
- 11:29Speaker 1: your journal to set small goals for the next day,
- 11:32Speaker 1: keeping your momentum going. Remember, positivity isn't about ignoring challenges.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It's about choosing to approach them with a mindset focused
- 11:43Speaker 1: on growth and possibilities. Small steps practice daily can lead
- 11:48Speaker 1: to lasting change. Now that we've explored the power of
- 11:53Speaker 1: positive thinking and its role and skill improvement, it's your
- 11:56Speaker 1: turn to take action. Start practicing positive affort every day
- 12:01Speaker 1: to boost your confidence and motivation. Identify a challenging skill
- 12:06Speaker 1: you want to improve and reframe your approach with a
