- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said, Thy name shall be
- 0:04Speaker 1: called no more Jacob, but Israel. For as a prince
- 0:08Speaker 1: hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Genesis 32.28 Dear God, as I reflect on my life,
- 0:21Speaker 1: thank you, Lord, for the gift of reconciliation and forgiveness.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Thank you that even in my wrongdoings you produce grace
- 0:29Speaker 1: moments for me. Like Jacob in Genesis 32 and 33,
- 0:35Speaker 1: I choose to believe the words of your angels that
- 0:38Speaker 1: declare that here is the Lord's place. I declare that
- 0:43Speaker 1: my life is the Lord's place. I declare that my
- 0:47Speaker 1: business is the Lord's place and that my relationships are
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the Lord's place. Therefore, I will not be afraid
- 0:55Speaker 1: of seasons when I feel I am wrestling for a
- 0:58Speaker 1: new identity, a new blessing, and a new beginning. I
- 1:03Speaker 1: confess that I will hold on to you, God, until
- 1:07Speaker 1: I receive my newness, and I will not let go
- 1:11Speaker 1: even after you bless me. You are my waymaker, and
- 1:16Speaker 1: you are the God that makes old things new. Thank you, Lord,
- 1:21Speaker 1: that even in the midst of dysfunction, you still allow
- 1:25Speaker 1: your glory to settle my differences and bring restoration to
- 1:29Speaker 1: my life. Thank you for a new name of victory
- 1:34Speaker 1: and a new purpose for my life, filled with all
- 1:38Speaker 1: your many blessings. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for making
- 1:47Speaker 1: prayer a priority in your life. To hear the Bible
- 1:50Speaker 1: come to life, stay tuned for The Bible in a Year,

- 2:07Speaker 2: You are Israel. Before this story, we learned of Jacob
- 2:12Speaker 2: fleeing the service of Laban. He packed his family and
- 2:15Speaker 2: traveled back to Canaan. However, Laban would not let Jacob go.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Jacob and Laban bore their souls before one another, sharing
- 2:24Speaker 2: the anger that rested in both their hearts. Eventually, the
- 2:28Speaker 2: two made peace, and Laban sent Jacob on his way.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Now we will learn about Jacob entering into his homeland
- 2:36Speaker 2: once again although he feared the wrath of his brother Esau.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Wrestling with God, Jacob will cling to the blessings of
- 2:44Speaker 2: God and get his name changed, inspired by the book
- 2:48Speaker 2: of Genesis.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:53Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Previously, we heard the story
- 2:58Speaker 3: of how Jacob fled from Laban, a man who had
- 3:00Speaker 3: wronged and deceived Jacob for many years. In the end,
- 3:05Speaker 3: The two men made peace and Laban let Jacob go
- 3:07Speaker 3: to Canaan, the land of Jacob's father, the land of promise.
- 3:12Speaker 3: And Jacob took with him his wealth and a large family. Today,
- 3:17Speaker 3: we'll see how Jacob enters his former homeland and seeks
- 3:20Speaker 3: reconciliation with his brother Esau. If you remember their story,
- 3:25Speaker 3: it was Jacob who was the cheater and trickster in
- 3:27Speaker 3: that relationship. And when he fled more than 20 years
- 3:31Speaker 3: before Esau, was filled with rage and murderous intent. As
- 3:37Speaker 3: you listen to this passage of Scripture, imagine the fear
- 3:41Speaker 3: with which Jacob stepped into this dangerous territory to face
- 3:45Speaker 3: his brother Esau. Before he encounters Esau, he's going to
- 3:49Speaker 3: face another man. But this is not just any man,
- 3:53Speaker 3: and he isn't a stranger, as Jacob will discover. It
- 3:56Speaker 3: is an encounter Jacob must have before he faces Esau,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and It will be a life-changing turning point in his
- 4:04Speaker 3: life and future. So pay close attention as Jacob and
- 4:09Speaker 3: Esau finally face each other again. Will there be bitterness
- 4:12Speaker 3: and bloodshed or renewal and reconciliation? Let's listen to God's
- 4:17Speaker 3: word and find out.
- 4:20Speaker 2: A familiar breeze blew through the valley below Jacob. The
- 4:24Speaker 2: sweet summer air caressed the plains, causing the grass to dance.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Jacob smiled and turned his face towards the sun. He
- 4:33Speaker 2: was home again. Still a few miles away from Canaan,
- 4:37Speaker 2: he then turned towards the hill he had set camp on.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Angels of the Lord had met him there. Already, Jacob
- 4:44Speaker 2: knew that something holy and peculiar was taking place. This
- 4:48Speaker 2: is God's camp, Jacob acknowledged. The last time Jacob was there,
- 4:54Speaker 2: he had run away in fear of his brother Esau.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Esau had vowed to kill Jacob, so he left in
- 5:01Speaker 2: hope that his brother's anger would subside. Jacob sent messengers
- 5:05Speaker 2: to go before him, saying, I have sojourned with our
- 5:08Speaker 2: uncle Laban and have been there until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks,
- 5:14Speaker 2: servants that I wish to share with you. I say
- 5:17Speaker 2: all these things to find favor in your sight. Jacob's
- 5:23Speaker 2: servants had sent Esau the message and waited on the
- 5:26Speaker 2: outskirts of his land until to see what his response
- 5:29Speaker 2: would be. Around the corner of the canyons, the messengers
- 5:33Speaker 2: saw Esau coming out to meet with Jacob. Only behind
- 5:37Speaker 2: him was four hundred armed men. A great fear fell
- 5:41Speaker 2: upon Jacob. He remembered how wild of a man Esau was,
- 5:45Speaker 2: filled with power and tact. Jacob did not have the
- 5:49Speaker 2: strength nor the men to defend himself. Jacob prepared for
- 5:53Speaker 2: the worst. He divided his camp into two parties and
- 5:57Speaker 2: sent them on opposite ends of one another. If Esau
- 6:00Speaker 2: came to destroy one of the camps, the other would
- 6:03Speaker 2: be spared. Jacob trembled before God. Fear was overcoming him,
- 6:09Speaker 2: and he looked to heaven and said, God of my
- 6:12Speaker 2: fathers Abraham and Isaac, you have told me to return.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You desired for me to be here so that you
- 6:18Speaker 2: might bless me. I am not worthy of your kindness
- 6:22Speaker 2: or your provision. Jacob for perhaps the first time in
- 6:26Speaker 2: his life, felt the full weight of God's love for him.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You have shown me steadfast love and faithfulness. I began
- 6:36Speaker 2: with nothing to my name except a staff, and now
- 6:39Speaker 2: I have two camps that rely on me. Tears hit
- 6:43Speaker 2: Jacob's trembling hands. Please, deliver me from the revenge of
- 6:49Speaker 2: my brother. I fear him. and I fear for all
- 6:53Speaker 2: the people here under my care. But you promised to
- 6:57Speaker 2: bless me and to expand my offspring. I will trust you.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Jacob lingered there for the night. He sent out droves
- 7:07Speaker 2: of gifts of cattle, goats, and other livestock before him
- 7:10Speaker 2: to gain favor with Esau. Yet there was no predicting
- 7:14Speaker 2: how Esau would receive his gifts, for he pursued Jacob
- 7:18Speaker 2: with four hundred men behind him. That same night, Jacob
- 7:24Speaker 2: arose with his wives and eleven children and sent them
- 7:27Speaker 2: across the stream of Jabbok. He sent them away to
- 7:30Speaker 2: be safe with everything else he had in his possession.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Jacob was left alone, until a man sprang up from
- 7:38Speaker 2: behind him. Struggling in the mud and gravel, Jacob wrestled
- 7:41Speaker 2: with this man in the dead of night. Sweat and
- 7:44Speaker 2: blood dripping from his body, Jacob fought for his life
- 7:47Speaker 2: under the weight of this unknown stranger. The night drew on.
- 7:51Speaker 2: and the sun was beginning to rear its head between
- 7:54Speaker 2: the hills. Jacob, while endeavoring with this man, became increasingly
- 7:58Speaker 2: more aware of his divine nature. His wrestling match was
- 8:02Speaker 2: not an assault, but an invitation. This is God's camp,
- 8:08Speaker 2: echoed in his memory. Jacob, the once timid tent dweller,
- 8:12Speaker 2: found himself grappling on the ground with God himself. Dawn
- 8:17Speaker 2: peeked through the trees. The man saw that he would
- 8:20Speaker 2: not prevail against Jacob. He touched his hip socket and
- 8:24Speaker 2: jammed his hip out of its joint. Jacob screamed and
- 8:28Speaker 2: released his legs from around the man. Yet he clung
- 8:31Speaker 2: to him with his arms, refusing to let go. Let
- 8:35Speaker 2: me go, for the day is broken, the man said. Jacob,
- 8:41Speaker 2: who had spent his entire life making his own luck,
- 8:44Speaker 2: was face to face with the end of himself. He
- 8:48Speaker 2: had deceived his brother into selling his birthright, he had
- 8:51Speaker 2: tricked his father into blessing him, and he had swindled
- 8:54Speaker 2: Laban into making him richer. Yet now Jacob was faced
- 8:59Speaker 2: with God himself, and had no means to trick his
- 9:02Speaker 2: way into victory. Jacob's eyes closed tightly, and he flexed
- 9:07Speaker 2: his arms firmly to the legs of this man and said,
- 9:10Speaker 2: I will not let you go unless you bless me.
- 9:14Speaker 2: A slight smile came across the man's face. What is
- 9:18Speaker 2: your name? he asked. Jacob, he shouted in pain. You
- 9:24Speaker 2: shall no longer be called Jacob, he said, but Israel,
- 9:28Speaker 2: for you have wrestled with God and with men, and prevailed. Please,
- 9:34Speaker 2: tell me your name, Jacob asked. Now a full smile
- 9:38Speaker 2: filled his face. Why is it that you ask my name?
- 9:42Speaker 2: he said, and he blessed him. So Jacob called that
- 9:46Speaker 2: place Peniel, saying, I have seen God face to face,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and yet my life has been spared. The sun's rays
- 9:54Speaker 2: reflected off of the stream beside Jacob, and the warmth
- 9:58Speaker 2: of the day began to dry the blue. and sweat
- 10:00Speaker 2: off his body. Limping back to his camp, Jacob felt
- 10:04Speaker 2: ready for whatever would come next. With the sun behind him,
- 10:09Speaker 2: Jacob gazed upon the fields below. He could see Esau
- 10:13Speaker 2: and his four hundred men creeping closer and closer. Still
- 10:17Speaker 2: filled with an exhausted euphoria, Jacob hobbled towards his brother
- 10:21Speaker 2: with his family traveling behind him. As the two drew nearer,
- 10:25Speaker 2: Esau began running towards Jacob. He ran with fervor and power.
- 10:30Speaker 2: The years had not taken away Esau's strength. Before Esau
- 10:35Speaker 2: could catch Jacob, he fell to his knees and bowed
- 10:38Speaker 2: before him. As a bear would, Esau wrapped Jacob up
- 10:42Speaker 2: in his arms and embraced him. He kissed his neck
- 10:46Speaker 2: and wept at the sight of his twin brother. The
- 10:49Speaker 2: years had wiped his bitterness away, and all that remained
- 10:53Speaker 2: was the affection of two twin brothers united after decades apart.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Esau lifted his eyes past his brother towards Jacob's family.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Who are these with you? Esau said. Jacob then introduced
- 11:07Speaker 2: his family to Esau, and they embraced his kindred spirits.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Why have you sent so many gifts? Esau asked. To
- 11:16Speaker 2: earn your forgiveness, brother, please take them. Esau refused them
- 11:20Speaker 2: at first, but Jacob insisted. Jacob knew that he had
- 11:24Speaker 2: truly wronged his brother and felt the depths of what
- 11:27Speaker 2: he had done. The two of them embraced again, and
- 11:31Speaker 2: Esau forgave Jacob. Esau departed that same day, and Jacob
- 11:37Speaker 2: settled in a place near Shechem and built an altar
- 11:40Speaker 2: to God called El Elohe Israel, meaning the God of Israel.
- 11:47Speaker 2: And Jacob built a new life for him and his family,
- 11:50Speaker 2: a life of flourishing and love. Though sorrow would not
- 11:55Speaker 2: remain a stranger to Jacob, God's love was present.
- 12:02Speaker 3: After years of self-imposed exile, Jacob is finally going home.
- 12:08Speaker 3: He's now a wealthy man and much older, and he
- 12:11Speaker 3: has a large family. It seems that God's plan is
- 12:15Speaker 3: to make a great nation from his family is beginning
- 12:18Speaker 3: to take shape. However, there are matters to be dealt
- 12:21Speaker 3: with first, and Jacob is not expecting to return home
- 12:25Speaker 3: to a hero's welcome. Will his brother Esau's anger remain,
- 12:29Speaker 3: or even worse, could it have grown stronger and more bitter?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Jacob had run in fear from his problems. That's what
- 12:36Speaker 3: he always did, run, because he was filled with selfish
- 12:40Speaker 3: ambitions and deceptive in all his ways. We've been there,
- 12:44Speaker 3: haven't we? We know when we have disobeyed God, messed up,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and then there comes the time of consequences. The fact
- 12:52Speaker 3: that we can't hide our sin any longer and it
- 12:55Speaker 3: comes time to face the music. God wants to remind
- 12:59Speaker 3: Jacob that even in this moment, he is not alone.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So he sends angels to meet him on the outskirts
- 13:06Speaker 3: of Canaan. Jacob sends messengers ahead to let Esau know
- 13:10Speaker 3: that he's returned and that he is ready to share
- 13:13Speaker 3: his accumulated wealth. Can you imagine the fear Jacob must
- 13:17Speaker 3: have been feeling, just waiting to see how Esau would react?
- 13:21Speaker 3: But notice that this time, rather than resorting to scheming
- 13:25Speaker 3: and cleverness, Jacob goes to God in prayer. He turns
- 13:30Speaker 3: the problem over to God. Jacob acknowledges God's presence and
- 13:34Speaker 3: how unworthy he was of the faithfulness and the blessing
- 13:37Speaker 3: of the Almighty. Then he made his honest petition, openly
- 13:41Speaker 3: telling God of all his fears and reminding God of
- 13:45Speaker 3: his promise to bless the nations through him. So now
- 13:49Speaker 3: we're seeing a much more mature and reverent Jacob than
- 13:53Speaker 3: we've seen before. He's now truly humble. And knowing how
- 13:57Speaker 3: much he owes Esau for his treachery, Jacob sends three
- 14:01Speaker 3: lead parties ahead, filled with gifts of livestock, to meet Esau.
- 14:06Speaker 3: What he does next is yet another sign of Jacob
- 14:09Speaker 3: embracing the mantle of leadership and role of protector of
- 14:12Speaker 3: his family. He guides him across the river and then
- 14:15Speaker 3: returns alone to camp. It's only him now, exposed and vulnerable.
- 14:22Speaker 3: That very night there is a battle, but not with
- 14:25Speaker 3: his estranged brother. The Lord himself wrestles with Jacob. Jacob
- 14:31Speaker 3: stubbornly refused to quit or to give up. Even after
- 14:35Speaker 3: God touched his hip and threw it out of socket,
- 14:38Speaker 3: Jacob would not relent or let go of his opponents.
- 14:41Speaker 3: This is one of the most fascinating scenes in all
- 14:44Speaker 3: the Bible. He doesn't recognize this stranger he is wrestling
- 14:48Speaker 3: with as God, but he knows there's something very special
- 14:51Speaker 3: about him. In the Gospel of Luke, we find a
- 14:54Speaker 3: story of the risen Christ walking on the road to Emmaus.
- 14:58Speaker 3: His traveling companions did not recognize him for who he was,
- 15:02Speaker 3: the risen Christ, but their hearts were strangely warmed. They
- 15:05Speaker 3: knew something was different. Was Jacob's heart also warmed? Jacob
- 15:11Speaker 3: agrees to only release his opponent if the man will
- 15:14Speaker 3: bless him. He cries out for the blessing of God.
- 15:18Speaker 3: But before God gives him the blessing, he gives him
- 15:21Speaker 3: a new name. And this new name has great significance. Jacob,
- 15:26Speaker 3: the cheater, will now be called Israel, the prince of God,
- 15:30Speaker 3: because he wrestled with God and did not quit. Jacob
- 15:34Speaker 3: leaves that encounter with a brand new name, but also
- 15:37Speaker 3: a limp as a reminder of that night forever. When
- 15:41Speaker 3: we truly encounter God, it will change us in ways
- 15:44Speaker 3: that we cannot understand or even possibly sometimes imagine. And
- 15:49Speaker 3: it will bless us in ways we cannot foresee. That
- 15:53Speaker 3: very day, Jacob finally meets Esau and reconciliation occurs. The
- 15:58Speaker 3: Lord God had gone before Jacob, now Israel. It was
- 16:02Speaker 3: not the shower of gifts that softened Esau's heart, but
- 16:05Speaker 3: God's grace. Jacob is now humble and repented. making no
- 16:10Speaker 3: excuses for his actions. Esau, for his part, makes no
- 16:14Speaker 3: attempt to take advantage of his upper hand. There's no
- 16:18Speaker 3: more need for hate, no more need for running, no
- 16:22Speaker 3: more need for separation. Now there is peace. The two
- 16:26Speaker 3: brothers embrace, and Esau forgives Jacob. As Esau departs, Jacob, Israel,
- 16:35Speaker 3: builds an altar to remember God's faithfulness. The altar is
- 16:38Speaker 3: called the God of Israel, for that is who God is.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Dear God of Israel and of all nations, the God
- 16:46Speaker 3: and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for
- 16:50Speaker 3: being the God who wrestles with his children and blesses them.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Just as you bless Jacob for clinging to you, may
- 16:57Speaker 3: you bless us as we turn to you, trust you,
- 17:00Speaker 3: and never let go. Thank you for this beautiful story
- 17:04Speaker 3: of unification between brothers and the hope that shines through
- 17:08Speaker 3: into our broken relationships. Help us to trust you to
- 17:12Speaker 3: go before us in our relationships, just as you did
- 17:15Speaker 3: for Jacob and Esau. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
