Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Royce Lewis walk-off puts Twins back at .500, and trade deadline Q's
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Absolute cinema at Target Field as Royce Lewis hits the
- 0:04Speaker 1: walk off for the second time in just over a
- 0:07Speaker 1: month to lift the Twins past the Royals cinema in
- 0:09Speaker 1: the sense of a frustrating movie that had an amazing ending,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I suppose, but however, also a Byron Buxton reaggravation of
- 0:18Speaker 1: the hip injury he left the game, and the offensive
- 0:20Speaker 1: struggles that have been hanging around this team for a
- 0:23Speaker 1: while now continued prior to Lewis's hit. But the bottom
- 0:26Speaker 1: line Twins back to five hundred fifty four and fifty
- 0:30Speaker 1: four with fifty four games to play. How about that
- 0:32Speaker 1: For some symmetry, we'll talk about all that. We'll talk
- 0:34Speaker 1: about Jeremy Zole's comments on the team being ready to
- 0:38Speaker 1: buy at the trade deadline, and we'll answer your trade
- 0:40Speaker 1: deadline questions today on Twins City's Territory or Minnesota Twins
- 0:44Speaker 1: podcast here on the File Territory Network. Im Zach Pearce
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the Athletic joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, a longtime Major
- 0:54Speaker 1: leaguer and former Minnesota Twin guys. It was trending towards
- 0:58Speaker 1: another frustrating start to a series against a bad team,
- 1:01Speaker 1: until Royce Lewis came up with some magic in the
- 1:04Speaker 1: ninth inning and got the Twins to five hundred dan
- 1:07Speaker 1: exhilarating wins. Some warts that it covered up, but nevertheless,
- 1:11Speaker 1: as we talked about in the last show, a win is.
- 1:13Speaker 2: A win, right it is. And it's crazy because that
- 1:18Speaker 2: game flew by. I mean, it was just going so fast.
- 1:20Speaker 2: The pitching was great. Five double plays by the Royals,
- 1:25Speaker 2: you know, the Twins just couldn't find a hit there
- 1:28Speaker 2: the five double plays, then you have the great diving
- 1:32Speaker 2: catch and there was another ball hit by Alan Roaden
- 1:34Speaker 2: earlier they got caught in the gap. Like it just
- 1:36Speaker 2: didn't feel like the Twins' night, And in an instant
- 1:39Speaker 2: it just turned on its you know, Royce Lewis turning
- 1:42Speaker 2: the game on it side basically and hit that ball
- 1:45Speaker 2: the right center center field whatever you want to call
- 1:48Speaker 2: it that, but that's like you wondered, did it have enough?
- 1:52Speaker 2: And it just kept going and an electric moment the
- 1:55Speaker 2: Twins absolutely needed, especially like Ron Bucks and getting hurt
- 1:59Speaker 2: earlier in the game, sitting with the hip injury obviously
- 2:02Speaker 2: that's a big concern, and you're sitting there going, man,
- 2:05Speaker 2: this is a team we should be beating up on.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And the Twins had, you know, their pitchers combined for
- 2:10Speaker 2: a four hitter throughout that game. The bullpen was very good,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and it's the middle part of the bullpen. It's sort
- 2:15Speaker 2: of that unestablished part of the bullpen that they desperately
- 2:18Speaker 2: need guys to show up. They came in and did
- 2:21Speaker 2: a great job and you're just hanging around and hanging around,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and Twins said good at bats all night to set
- 2:27Speaker 2: themselves up. They had a run around base in every
- 2:29Speaker 2: inning and yet they'd only had the one run score.
- 2:32Speaker 2: So it was a very clutch moment for the Twins.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Royce Lewis delivering in his second walk off of his career,
- 2:39Speaker 2: second of the season also and doing some nifty base
- 2:43Speaker 2: running because somehow he managed to get a triple, a
- 2:46Speaker 2: walk off triple on that play, racing all the way.
- 2:50Speaker 2: He watched it for a good second off the bat,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and then he realized it was going to hit the
- 2:55Speaker 2: wall and he ran as hard as he could and
- 2:57Speaker 2: he did a head first dive in the third for
- 2:59Speaker 2: a triple, And yeah, like that just all around electric
- 3:04Speaker 2: moment for the Twins. They needed it and here they are.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I mean, it was a it was jeremy' zol started
- 3:10Speaker 2: off earlier in the day and we'll talk about that,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but he said, we're going to be buyers, and it
- 3:14Speaker 2: just felt like, man, this is gonna be so rough.
- 3:17Speaker 2: The GM just said we're going to be buyers and
- 3:19Speaker 2: we're gonna fall flat on our faces. But the two
- 3:22Speaker 2: to one lost to Kansas City and and they turned
- 3:25Speaker 2: it around, so pretty pretty electric evening.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't I don't think Jeremy's old's mind would
- 3:30Speaker 1: have been changed by one, you know, uh Kardi loss. However, Tyler,
- 3:35Speaker 1: it still feels like another one of those wins that
- 3:38Speaker 1: kind of defines the season or gets you gets you
- 3:40Speaker 1: fired up in the right way. Their stretch of this
- 3:42Speaker 1: good play started with that exact same thing against the
- 3:45Speaker 1: Rockies at Rooyce walking it off.
- 3:48Speaker 3: No, it's one you know, we talked about it leading
- 3:51Speaker 3: into this series, like Lugo is a good pitching matchup.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Hei'es a guy who studies lineups.
- 3:55Speaker 3: He was going to be a tough guy to beat,
- 3:57Speaker 3: and you know he did his job yesterday.
- 3:59Speaker 4: But the wins.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Maintained what they have all year, and they kept fighting.
- 4:04Speaker 3: You know, Royce didn't even start the game. Yesterday comes up,
- 4:07Speaker 3: you know, it gets I think to at bats, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: it comes up with a big hit and it's just
- 4:12Speaker 3: the stereotypical when for this year, you know, so we've
- 4:17Speaker 3: we've averaged you know, the average out. It's a lot
- 4:19Speaker 3: of runs, but on the whole, it's it's you know,
- 4:22Speaker 3: it's games like this that are the ones that matter.
- 4:24Speaker 3: The blowouts are great, but when in this one is
- 4:27Speaker 3: so big, especially first game of that series. You know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: it's jay Z saying what he said in the in
- 4:33Speaker 3: the meeting, it's just all the things are there. You
- 4:36Speaker 3: know that it's I wouldn't necessarily call it internal pressure
- 4:39Speaker 3: for the players, but just there is a a an
- 4:42Speaker 3: awareness level of hey, guys, like if we do our jobs,
- 4:46Speaker 3: we can.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Do something cool here.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:48Speaker 3: And it's now become in tangible because all season leading
- 4:51Speaker 3: up it's like, okay, we're relevant, we're in the mix,
- 4:53Speaker 3: we're doing this. You know, we're still in a weird
- 4:56Speaker 3: American league where anybody's really in a spot for the
- 5:00Speaker 3: wild card, and you know, last night was a big step.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You know, basically get back to square one at five hundred.
- 5:07Speaker 3: When tonight you go over five hundred for the first
- 5:09Speaker 3: time in a long time, you know, it's it's a
- 5:12Speaker 3: huge one.
- 5:13Speaker 5: You know.
- 5:14Speaker 3: The vibes I'm sure were great after that game. You know,
- 5:16Speaker 3: Royce brought all his buddies on the field with him postgame,
- 5:19Speaker 3: and it's that's a good one. That's that's a good
- 5:23Speaker 3: one for everybody, the fans, you know, the front office, players,
- 5:26Speaker 3: coaches like that's you went home last night happy, probably
- 5:30Speaker 3: stayed up a little longer just because of that adrenaline.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's it's an exciting time and it's all you can
- 5:36Speaker 3: ever do.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And you hear it a lot is put pressure on.
- 5:39Speaker 3: People to make a decision, and last night's a perfect
- 5:42Speaker 3: example of that.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is our first time recording a
- 5:48Speaker 1: show when the team is five hundred or better since
- 5:50Speaker 1: April twenty second, because the one other time they were
- 5:55Speaker 1: at five hundred was the Friday win against the Cubs.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But then they lost Saturday and Sunday.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Right right, and then they were just disastrous this next
- 6:03Speaker 2: two days too. It was like not even close to
- 6:06Speaker 2: being a good team. So yes, yeah, but that was
- 6:09Speaker 2: a fast win too. By the way, that was a
- 6:11Speaker 2: two thirty four, so they had extra time last night.
- 6:13Speaker 2: There you go to spend that.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Twins pulled it within two games of the White Sox,
- 6:22Speaker 1: who've lost too straight for first place in the Central.
- 6:25Speaker 1: In between them is Cleveland, which split a doubleheader with
- 6:27Speaker 1: the Reds yesterday, so they're a half game behind Cleveland
- 6:30Speaker 1: for the final wildcard spot. So game on Boston too,
- 6:34Speaker 1: like Boston. That's right, Yeah, good day.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It was the fourth time in the last five games
- 6:41Speaker 1: they've scored three runs or fewer, which is a bit
- 6:44Speaker 1: of a concern. They did win three of the games,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so yeah, not too bad, but that makes Byron Buxton's
- 6:49Speaker 1: exit all the more concerning Dan. What do we know
- 6:52Speaker 1: about what's going on with Byron?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, they just said it was a re occurrence or
- 6:58Speaker 2: reaggravation of the hip. Not good because obviously he spent
- 7:02Speaker 2: the fifteen days on the aisle and or whatever it was.
- 7:08Speaker 2: So they'll get more testing done today and figure out
- 7:11Speaker 2: what's going on. I wouldn't be shocked if he ends
- 7:13Speaker 2: up back on the aisle. We'll see. I don't know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: but they got to get it right. But that's a
- 7:18Speaker 2: big loss, and I don't you know how you counter.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I don't know the you mentioned the offense struggling. I
- 7:25Speaker 2: will say there were good signs. There were ten hits.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I think, no, nine hits. Wait, no, there were ten hits.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Royce was the ten a bunch of walks. Josh Bell
- 7:36Speaker 2: got two hits he needed to get going. Victor Carrottini
- 7:39Speaker 2: had two hits. He got the leadoff single in the
- 7:41Speaker 2: ninth to get the rally started. They're going to need
- 7:45Speaker 2: the collective to come through again, and I don't know
- 7:47Speaker 2: if the collective will mean going to the minor leagues
- 7:50Speaker 2: and getting Walker Jenkins and bringing him up. He's ready
- 7:53Speaker 2: to come up. I don't know how they'll handle this
- 7:55Speaker 2: because if Byron Buckston is hurt, that's obviously a blow.
- 8:00Speaker 2: But he has not been very particularly good since he
- 8:03Speaker 2: came back. You've one really nice catch over the weekend,
- 8:05Speaker 2: but like, he has not hit very well since he
- 8:08Speaker 2: returned off the IL. I mean they were facing some
- 8:10Speaker 2: tough pitching with Cleveland obviously, and then the A's that
- 8:15Speaker 2: juggernaut of a pitching staff shut the Twins down offensively
- 8:18Speaker 2: aside from the Sunday. But the collective will have to return.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I did like the at bats I saw there were
- 8:25Speaker 2: just unfortunate double plays that wipe things out because Twins
- 8:28Speaker 2: had a ton of base runners last night. That's the
- 8:30Speaker 2: part that was so surprising. Lugo's so good. He's just
- 8:34Speaker 2: such a he knows them so well, like you said, Duffy,
- 8:37Speaker 2: he studies the lineup and knows his opponents well. I mean,
- 8:40Speaker 2: he had the Twins eating out of his hand. He'd
- 8:43Speaker 2: just get a guy on and then get a double
- 8:44Speaker 2: play and erase it right away. But there have been
- 8:47Speaker 2: good signs the last couple of days from this offense.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Just you've seen some guys getting their swings going. And
- 8:52Speaker 2: that's what's gonna need to happen with Byron Buxton if
- 8:55Speaker 2: he's out, if he goes on the IL, and again
- 8:58Speaker 2: like if he does going to Ale is time for
- 9:00Speaker 2: Walker Jenkins because you just need to do something to
- 9:04Speaker 2: replace him. And I you know, Kyler Fedco was up
- 9:07Speaker 2: earlier and that's the next right handed guy to have available.
- 9:12Speaker 2: But I you know, does Walker Jenkins. You know that's
- 9:16Speaker 2: a guy that can play a lot, and and you
- 9:18Speaker 2: bring them up to play every day, and the window
- 9:20Speaker 2: is here for it. If if Byron goes on the IL,
- 9:23Speaker 2: we'll see Byron. Byron might try to convince them to
- 9:26Speaker 2: give him three or four days. But given this is
- 9:29Speaker 2: a reoccurrence and it's been something that's snagged him since
- 9:31Speaker 2: mid May, it's really got to be looked at and
- 9:34Speaker 2: and uh, clearly they'll they'll figure things out.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Does it affect your trade deadline plans at all? Not
- 9:40Speaker 1: in terms of buying or selling, but what you're planning for.
- 9:44Speaker 2: No, you can't look this team has answered these injury
- 9:47Speaker 2: questions all year. Pablo Lopez went out on the first workout,
- 9:53Speaker 2: Mick Abel looked like he was gonna step in and
- 9:55Speaker 2: fill in for Pablo Lopez. He got hurt, he's out
- 9:57Speaker 2: for the season. Or okay, he's not out for this
- 10:00Speaker 2: season technically, but he won't get his review from his
- 10:04Speaker 2: arthroscopic surgery till September one, and that makes it seem
- 10:08Speaker 2: like he's out for the season. You've had numerous things
- 10:11Speaker 2: like this happen all year, and you've answered it. They've
- 10:14Speaker 2: played well without Byron in short stints so far, and
- 10:19Speaker 2: they're playing about the same record as they have played
- 10:21Speaker 2: with him in the lineup. So I think you can
- 10:24Speaker 2: try and keep Weather in the storm. Now, if he
- 10:26Speaker 2: was done for the season, I don't know that changes things. Maybe,
- 10:32Speaker 2: but then then you're trying Walker Jenkins out. And Walker
- 10:36Speaker 2: Jenkins is a top twenty prospect in baseball. He's ready,
- 10:39Speaker 2: So if he was out for the season, then you
- 10:41Speaker 2: try to go for it without him. I don't see.
- 10:45Speaker 2: The Twins are trying to capitalize on what they have.
- 10:47Speaker 2: This good vibe going and their fan base is starting
- 10:52Speaker 2: to pay attention again. There's fewer sell the team comments
- 10:56Speaker 2: and stories and online. Of course there's still sell the
- 11:00Speaker 2: team comments and they're not going to go away, but
- 11:02Speaker 2: there's fewer of those. But you have this good vibe going,
- 11:06Speaker 2: and you've tried to step in for guys all year.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Losing the three time all start like Byron Buckston would
- 11:10Speaker 2: be crushing. But I don't also expect the Twins to
- 11:13Speaker 2: go in that deep. It's not like they're going to
- 11:15Speaker 2: trade for Tarik Skooble. That's not what they're doing, right.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I don't think they're gonna go all the way. I
- 11:22Speaker 2: think they're going to try and enhance the roster and
- 11:24Speaker 2: bring in another reliever to just make the pen a
- 11:27Speaker 2: little bit, you know, deeper.
- 11:29Speaker 5: And so I.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Don't know how they're going to do it, but I
- 11:33Speaker 2: don't know that this would impact what they're going to do.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Speaking of good vibes, a thousand people watched our last show.

- 13:27Speaker 2: We gotta get you back to another games act.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's time, I would say, before we move on to
- 13:34Speaker 1: Jeremy's oll on the trade deadline, there's one more matter
- 13:36Speaker 1: we must address from last night's game. At about eight
- 13:40Speaker 1: fifty eight pm last night, this text came into the
- 13:43Speaker 1: three of us. It says. For those of you not watching,
- 13:46Speaker 1: it says, I consider myself a sane and rational person,
- 13:50Speaker 1: but I'm ready to sell the entire roster now. Eight
- 13:54Speaker 1: fifty eight PM was after the bottom of the eighth
- 13:58Speaker 1: when the Twins failed to score again. Looked like they
- 14:00Speaker 1: were headed for an unfortunate loss. So I reached out
- 14:04Speaker 1: to this person and they agreed to come on and
- 14:06Speaker 1: talk about how they were feeling last night. Why they
- 14:10Speaker 1: said what they said. I thought it was a very
- 14:12Speaker 1: courageous thing for this person to do, so I appreciate
- 14:15Speaker 1: them coming on. They did ask for a few concessions
- 14:18Speaker 1: on our end, which I was willing to grant. So
- 14:20Speaker 1: here it is our interview with the Twins hater who
- 14:23Speaker 1: sent that text. All right, thank you very much for
- 14:32Speaker 1: joining us. I know it's been a busy night, a
- 14:34Speaker 1: lot of media obligations, I'm sure, but appreciate you making
- 14:37Speaker 1: the time for us. First question, can you tell us
- 14:40Speaker 1: your name and just what exactly was going through your
- 14:43Speaker 1: mind when you sent that text?
- 14:47Speaker 5: Oh, my name is not important. I think what is
- 14:50Speaker 5: important is that I cleared the air, because yeah, what
- 14:54Speaker 5: was going through my mind was game was over. You know,
- 14:58Speaker 5: Twins just couldn't stop hitting into double plays. It's been
- 15:01Speaker 5: a stretch of mostly frustrating offensive performances. I know. You know,
- 15:06Speaker 5: Dan Hayes, the brilliant beat writer for the Athletics, said
- 15:10Speaker 5: we shouldn't worry about the aesthetics, but it's just hard
- 15:14Speaker 5: for me. And so I got a little emotional fired
- 15:18Speaker 5: off the text that I obviously regret and wish I
- 15:22Speaker 5: hadn't done. But you know, those things happen sometimes, and
- 15:26Speaker 5: I just want to apologize to the entire the entire
- 15:29Speaker 5: team and the fan base.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Did you feel bad at all betraying your faith as
- 15:35Speaker 1: a fan like that?
- 15:39Speaker 5: Yeah? Of course. I mean, you know, you think you're
- 15:43Speaker 5: four point three percenter. You know, you try to act
- 15:46Speaker 5: like one, you try to carry yourself like one, and
- 15:49Speaker 5: you know, and then in a moment of real of
- 15:52Speaker 5: real faith being tested, you know, you go and do
- 15:55Speaker 5: something like that, and and certainly, you know, I wish
- 15:58Speaker 5: you could have that, you know, that little more it
- 16:00Speaker 5: back and pull the fingers away from the phone. But
- 16:03Speaker 5: it is what it is, and all we can do
- 16:04Speaker 5: now is move forward.
- 16:07Speaker 1: When Royce hit the walk off, just talk us through
- 16:11Speaker 1: what that moment was like for you.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, obviously it was a real emotional blender.
- 16:18Speaker 5: I mean, you're ecstatic the Twins just won the game. Amazing, amazing,
- 16:23Speaker 5: ending Royce another walk off.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:24Speaker 5: But also at the same time, your heart's sinking because
- 16:28Speaker 5: you know, you know you sent the text and you
- 16:30Speaker 5: know you probably can't really enjoy it the same way
- 16:33Speaker 5: the true fans are out there. So it was a
- 16:36Speaker 5: tough one. Not gonna lie.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Do you still want the team to, as you put it,
- 16:42Speaker 1: sell the entire roster?
- 16:47Speaker 5: That was probably harsh, you know, certainly fifty four and
- 16:51Speaker 5: fifty four right there in the think of the race. Yeah, No,
- 16:54Speaker 5: I you know I didn't mean that. I you know,
- 16:57Speaker 5: I think about what Tyler Duffy, my my favorite Twins analyst,
- 17:01Speaker 5: has been saying all this time, which is just you know,
- 17:04Speaker 5: you can't do that to this team. You can't, you
- 17:06Speaker 5: can't tear it all down. So so no, I guess
- 17:09Speaker 5: I obviously I obviously regret those comments, and but what
- 17:14Speaker 5: can you What can you do? They're out there, they're public,
- 17:17Speaker 5: and you just have to move forward and try to
- 17:19Speaker 5: make the best of it. Last question, then we'll let
- 17:22Speaker 5: you go. What did you learn from all this well,
- 17:27Speaker 5: I mean, Zach you know this as as you know,
- 17:30Speaker 5: one of the most prominent podcast hosts out there. It's,
- 17:35Speaker 5: you know what, you can say too much? Sometimes you
- 17:37Speaker 5: can you can you can run a little hot, you
- 17:40Speaker 5: can say something you regret. And all I can say
- 17:44Speaker 5: is that, you know, next time we'll be better. And
- 17:46Speaker 5: you know, there's there's there's twenty seven outs in a ballgame,
- 17:49Speaker 5: not twenty four. So maybe don't fire off texts at
- 17:53Speaker 5: the end of the eightning next time, and we'll just
- 17:56Speaker 5: just try to be a better man in general.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Man, all right, I mean I got to give him credit,
- 18:05Speaker 1: you know, to to come out like that, not hide
- 18:07Speaker 1: behind it, admit that he did was wrong.
- 18:10Speaker 2: That was just it took a lot of courage, I
- 18:12Speaker 2: would say, his an awful lot.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Like track him down that fast.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was amazing that you were able to
- 18:21Speaker 2: get him. I know, really, you know, I know, was
- 18:25Speaker 2: there some Paola did you have to like.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Did you have to you know? You know, yeah, I
- 18:30Speaker 1: agree to the anonymity thing, of course, you know, you
- 18:32Speaker 1: gotta gotta do what you gotta do, But I think
- 18:35Speaker 1: we had good journalistic reasons to do it. So, uh
- 18:37Speaker 1: so I'm fine with it.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Were weirdly familiar the way he spoke yes, yeah, yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 2: The breath, the deep breath as he spoke Zach.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I liked it. I liked it.
- 18:49Speaker 6: I thought, you know, you know, the funny part is,
- 18:52Speaker 6: like that text, I think that we can rule out,
- 18:56Speaker 6: like from that text, Duff, neither Duff or I would
- 19:00Speaker 6: describe ourselves as sane.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So I think there leaves only one of us that
- 19:06Speaker 2: could have possibly could have been a party.
- 19:08Speaker 1: It could have been a fourth party.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I've never been described as that. I don't think so.
- 19:14Speaker 1: All right, Well, if you're watching on YouTube, there were
- 19:18Speaker 1: time codes at the bottom, you could easily skip that
- 19:21Speaker 1: part if if it was as ridiculous as it felt.
- 19:24Speaker 1: But anyway, unting back to the matter at hand, this
- 19:31Speaker 1: was supposed to be a show all about the trade deadline.
- 19:33Speaker 1: But obviously that game last night had enough news that
- 19:35Speaker 1: we wanted to start with that. But the rest of
- 19:37Speaker 1: the show was all trade deadline. And we'll start with
- 19:39Speaker 1: Jeremy Zul's comments last night. Dan take us through what
- 19:42Speaker 1: he said. He's obviously already implied that the team intends
- 19:46Speaker 1: to be buyers of the deadline, but seem to to
- 19:48Speaker 1: kind of double down on that a bit last night.
- 19:50Speaker 2: They have dropped every hint that they can for a
- 19:53Speaker 2: month now that they wanted to buy. They recognize, and
- 19:57Speaker 2: it's it's all about winning back to fans, about winning
- 20:00Speaker 2: back the players, trusting the clubhouse. Like I know I've
- 20:02Speaker 2: said that a zillion times, but like Jeremy z Oll
- 20:05Speaker 2: on June twenty fourth said, we're not training Byron Bucks
- 20:08Speaker 2: and we're not entertaining the thought of that. Then Tom
- 20:10Speaker 2: pull Ad on July tenth said, hey, we're like basically
- 20:14Speaker 2: he hinted that they need to do more and they
- 20:16Speaker 2: need to add, and so Jeremy's old last night came
- 20:19Speaker 2: out and there was just no uncertainty. I mean, we
- 20:24Speaker 2: have all these teams out there that are sort of
- 20:25Speaker 2: in the Twins position right now, who are saying, we're
- 20:27Speaker 2: not sure if we're going to sell, We're not sure
- 20:29Speaker 2: if we're going to buy, We're gonna let this play out.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Jeremy z Old was like, no, we're clear in a direction,
- 20:35Speaker 2: and we've been prepping to buy for a while now.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Our pro personnel group has been looking for players to
- 20:42Speaker 2: add for a while and this isn't like because we've
- 20:46Speaker 2: won five of six. We're just buying. We're in this spot.
- 20:50Speaker 2: We're going to buy. And you know, it's doesn't shock
- 20:54Speaker 2: me to hear him say it, because this is where
- 20:57Speaker 2: they've said they want to go, and really they know
- 21:02Speaker 2: what being in this position and not doing anything can
- 21:05Speaker 2: do for them. It's just going to crush them again
- 21:07Speaker 2: with their fans who are struggling to pay attention as
- 21:11Speaker 2: it is. They need to wake the fans up, they
- 21:13Speaker 2: need to get their attention, and so they're going to
- 21:15Speaker 2: They're trying to buy. That's what they want to do,
- 21:17Speaker 2: and it doesn't necessarily look again, they're not going to
- 21:21Speaker 2: go all in. This is not an all in type moment.
- 21:24Speaker 2: They're not looking at trading some of their top guys.
- 21:26Speaker 2: And we'll talk about the prospects a little bit later
- 21:28Speaker 2: in the questions the mail bag questions. But they're they're
- 21:33Speaker 2: just looking to enhance the roster. They realize there's a
- 21:35Speaker 2: delicate balance of chemistry that they don't want to upset
- 21:38Speaker 2: that much. But there are ways to improve this club
- 21:41Speaker 2: and that's on the pitching side, and they're going to
- 21:43Speaker 2: look to do that. And I know that it's going
- 21:44Speaker 2: to be thin on the pitching side as far as
- 21:47Speaker 2: what's available to them, but they have assets to go
- 21:50Speaker 2: out and do it. And I think that they're going
- 21:52Speaker 2: to be aggressive and try to do what they can
- 21:56Speaker 2: because they realize that this is one of those points
- 21:59Speaker 2: where you make your fans pay attention or if you don't,
- 22:02Speaker 2: and not doing anything is the worst outcome of all here.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I think that's the worst outcome of all because you
- 22:10Speaker 2: have Ryan Jeffers who you could trade, You have Joe
- 22:12Speaker 2: Ryan who you could trade. You got guys that you
- 22:16Speaker 2: easily could make a killing if you sold, and so
- 22:20Speaker 2: not doing nothing is really not an option here. Like
- 22:23Speaker 2: they've got to at least add on a minor level,
- 22:26Speaker 2: and I think it'll be more than what you know,
- 22:30Speaker 2: just won't be massive, but there'll be something Done's big moves.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Let's get to some of those questions. And if you're
- 22:40Speaker 1: watching on YOUTB, you see on the bottom of the
- 22:42Speaker 1: screen right now a QR code for a promo at
- 22:45Speaker 1: Baseball America. Baseball America is the best place to learn
- 22:48Speaker 1: about all the prospects on the move this trade deadline season.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Now through Monday, our viewers get thirty percent off the
- 22:53Speaker 1: first year of any digital annual subscription with promo code
- 22:56Speaker 1: Twin Cities thirty. That's code Twin City. He's thirty at
- 23:01Speaker 1: Baseball America dot com. Thank you to everybody who submitted
- 23:05Speaker 1: a question, either in our YouTube comments or to us
- 23:08Speaker 1: on x We probably won't have time to get to
- 23:10Speaker 1: all of them today, but wanted to touch on as
- 23:12Speaker 1: many of them as we can. We'll start with one
- 23:14Speaker 1: for you, Tyler. This is from Chris Lasagna.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Great name.
- 23:19Speaker 1: What's it like for the players in the time leading
- 23:22Speaker 1: up to the trade deadline?
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a I've fortunately, I've you know, was never traded.
- 23:30Speaker 3: You know, I was just good enough to stick around,
- 23:32Speaker 3: but not good enough to be the peace. So for me,
- 23:36Speaker 3: it's always a fun watch, but it's a it's stressful,
- 23:40Speaker 3: to put it, bluntly like, and for good reasons, bad reasons,
- 23:44Speaker 3: you name it. But you know it starts at spring training.
- 23:48Speaker 3: You know, Joe Ryan rumors were already started, you know,
- 23:51Speaker 3: things like that, and you know since then it's been
- 23:53Speaker 3: Jeffers's the guy, you know, the Yankees want them, whoever
- 23:56Speaker 3: it is. But it's it's an interesting time because you
- 24:00Speaker 3: come to the field every day, especially this week. You know,
- 24:03Speaker 3: we've joked about it before, but like anytime a guy's
- 24:06Speaker 3: weirdly out of a lineup, maybe you know in the
- 24:08Speaker 3: minor leagues. You know, it's like, oh, the prospects leaving
- 24:11Speaker 3: or this guy's going, and so it's it's like you're
- 24:15Speaker 3: under the ultimate microscope right now. And as a player,
- 24:18Speaker 3: it's a weird spot because you know, rumors go around
- 24:22Speaker 3: and your family's asking you, or friends who may watch games,
- 24:25Speaker 3: or or even just people around town or asking you, like,
- 24:28Speaker 3: you know.
- 24:28Speaker 4: What, what do you got? You know, are you are
- 24:30Speaker 4: you going to be a twin? Are you going to
- 24:31Speaker 4: go to the Dodgers or the Yankees?
- 24:33Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 24:35Speaker 3: It's it's definitely easy to get wrapped up in it.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Kind of like the scoreboard watching we've talked about too.
- 24:41Speaker 3: It's it's something that become a thing depending on the
- 24:45Speaker 3: type of player you are, how you handle those situations.
- 24:48Speaker 3: It can get hectic, but it can also be a
- 24:50Speaker 3: fun time because, like I was saying, it means you're
- 24:53Speaker 3: really good at your job. It's a positive thing to
- 24:56Speaker 3: be that guy. You know, it means you're becoming a
- 24:59Speaker 3: free agent most like, it means somebody can get a
- 25:01Speaker 3: huge haul for you because you're doing your job extremely well.
- 25:04Speaker 3: You can help a team get better, you can go
- 25:06Speaker 3: to a World Series. You know, there's all the positives
- 25:09Speaker 3: that come from it. And then there's the behind the
- 25:11Speaker 3: scenes stuff, you know, guys basically getting uprooted overnight. You know,
- 25:15Speaker 3: they maybe sometimes will give you a day or so
- 25:17Speaker 3: to get going, to get your stuff together, but a
- 25:19Speaker 3: lot of times you're you're in the lineup that next day.
- 25:22Speaker 3: You know, your famili's got to pack up their apartment,
- 25:25Speaker 3: or you've got to get you know, clubhouse staff to
- 25:26Speaker 3: pack up your stuff and ship across country your car.
- 25:29Speaker 4: You know, all these things.
- 25:30Speaker 3: There's just so many moving parts that come along with it,
- 25:33Speaker 3: which is part of the gig.
- 25:34Speaker 5: You know.
- 25:34Speaker 3: It's it's you're you're an athlete. It's it's the greatest
- 25:37Speaker 3: shop in the world. But it does get stressful, you know.
- 25:41Speaker 3: But at the same time, I'm sure it's not quite
- 25:43Speaker 3: as stressful as the job of these front offices that
- 25:46Speaker 3: are having to make some of these decisions with people
- 25:49Speaker 3: with you know, flashlights looking for them at their house,
- 25:52Speaker 3: you know, make a move, you know, But it's it's
- 25:55Speaker 3: it's a fun time. It's one of the funnier times
- 25:57Speaker 3: of the year in baseball because you literally never know
- 25:59Speaker 3: what's going to happen. You know, there's always a move
- 26:01Speaker 3: that comes out of nowhere, and you know, makes makes
- 26:04Speaker 3: waves and it can change an entire season, get change
- 26:08Speaker 3: a franchise. You know, one move you win a World Series,
- 26:10Speaker 3: like you know, I've talked to Twins players from the past.
- 26:13Speaker 4: You win a World Series, you kind of don't leave,
- 26:15Speaker 4: you know, you leave a mark on that town. And yeah,
- 26:18Speaker 4: it changes the rest of your life.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Gotta be tough on the kids if you have kids,
- 26:22Speaker 1: right right, Well, that's.
- 26:24Speaker 3: What I'm saying, Like, hey, daddy's leaving and you don't
- 26:27Speaker 3: really know when you're gonna see him again. And you know,
- 26:28Speaker 3: if the team's on the road for two weeks and
- 26:30Speaker 3: get bounced around, it's, uh, there's a lot of moving parts.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And some teams are helpful. You know, every team's different
- 26:36Speaker 3: how they run things. You know, Mike downstairs and with
- 26:40Speaker 3: all the boys, he's hermes, one of the best in
- 26:43Speaker 3: the league. We used to joke he's top thirty in
- 26:45Speaker 3: the league, but he's he's more like one or two.
- 26:48Speaker 4: And it's not too so.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Uh, you know, it's having good staff helps, but yeah,
- 26:54Speaker 3: it's it's a fun time, crazy time, and there's a reason.
- 26:57Speaker 3: It's you know, it only happens once because that deadline
- 27:00Speaker 3: you had to you know, moving that thing.
- 27:01Speaker 4: It's there's a lot of moving pieces.
- 27:05Speaker 1: One of the most popular topics for the Twins around
- 27:09Speaker 1: the trade deadline is Ryan Jeffers. Obviously, we've talked a
- 27:12Speaker 1: lot about it. Contract situation is such that he's not
- 27:15Speaker 1: likely to return to the Twins anyway, so he's been
- 27:18Speaker 1: one of the most speculated trade targets. And a question
- 27:22Speaker 1: from Steven be on Twitter, would you accept a trade
- 27:25Speaker 1: of a ready now bullpen arm and a top five
- 27:27Speaker 1: pitching prospect for Jeffers. He throws out an example there
- 27:30Speaker 1: for the Yankees, but broadly, Dan, it's a question about
- 27:35Speaker 1: just what would the Twins be able to get likely
- 27:38Speaker 1: for Jeffers on the market.
- 27:41Speaker 2: They should ask for the highest amount. That's probably an overpay,
- 27:45Speaker 2: but that's the kind of idea that it would cost,
- 27:48Speaker 2: even though he's a rental and rentals typically don't get big.
- 27:52Speaker 2: It's not like it used to be, right we because
- 27:55Speaker 2: you don't get the compensation. The Yankees can't make a
- 27:58Speaker 2: qualifying offer to Ryan Jeffers if they trade for him
- 28:00Speaker 2: and let him become a free agent after the year,
- 28:02Speaker 2: so that like we don't see Reynolds get overpaced the
- 28:06Speaker 2: way that they typically would, but so many teams are
- 28:08Speaker 2: in the need for catching that, like the Twins should
- 28:12Speaker 2: expect to high him out because really, Hunter Goodman's the
- 28:15Speaker 2: best catcher out there, the Rockies catcher he is, Ryan
- 28:18Speaker 2: Jeffers is very good, and Ryan Jeffers is but at
- 28:22Speaker 2: a reasonable price, Like Hunter Goodman's the better catcher long
- 28:26Speaker 2: term because he's got years of control, but at a
- 28:29Speaker 2: reasonable price, Ryan Jeffers is easily the better trade asset
- 28:33Speaker 2: because like to get a Hunter Goodman, you're gonna have
- 28:35Speaker 2: to give up like a zillion prospects because he's got
- 28:38Speaker 2: so long left. Right, So yeah, I think the Twins
- 28:41Speaker 2: should look for something like that for an overpaid but
- 28:43Speaker 2: I also don't think that they're going to trade him.
- 28:45Speaker 2: I mean, look, they've said right now that with the
- 28:47Speaker 2: way his wrist is, that Ryan Jeffers, just as he
- 28:51Speaker 2: comes back from his ham at bone injury, that he
- 28:53Speaker 2: can't go and they feel sorry, no, so they they
- 28:59Speaker 2: they're comfortable going with three catchers. Now that's gonna be
- 29:03Speaker 2: complicated potentially by Byron Buckson. Let's let's see how that
- 29:06Speaker 2: plays out. Because you know, Alex Jackson has no options left.
- 29:10Speaker 2: So if they put Alex Jackson, if they try to
- 29:13Speaker 2: clear him, he has to go through waivers to be
- 29:15Speaker 2: cleared and go back to the miners. But as of
- 29:19Speaker 2: right now, they'd like to go three catchers. And you know,
- 29:22Speaker 2: one person said to me, and it was like maybe
- 29:25Speaker 2: three or four weeks ago, when the Yankees were kind
- 29:29Speaker 2: of identified as one of the teams that would like
- 29:31Speaker 2: a catcher, I just asked him in the front office about,
- 29:35Speaker 2: you know, Jeffers for so and so player, And the
- 29:39Speaker 2: response was, why are we trading Jeffers like so? You know,
- 29:43Speaker 2: that was three or four weeks ago before Jeremy's all
- 29:46Speaker 2: said they're buying. I don't think that. I think they
- 29:50Speaker 2: think the best version of them is going forward. And
- 29:52Speaker 2: here's the thing. If you think you're gonna play the
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yankees in the postseason, if you think you're making the postseason,
- 29:56Speaker 2: why do you want to strengthen the Yankees and give
- 29:59Speaker 2: them Ryan Jeffer first. Also, that's a desperate position of need.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Austin Wells is struggling at the plate, he's under He's
- 30:06Speaker 2: a minus performer offensively, right now. So why are you
- 30:09Speaker 2: trading Ryan Jeffers to a team like that that you
- 30:12Speaker 2: may see? I mean, if you're gonna trade him, trade
- 30:15Speaker 2: him to the Dodgers. You know they need they need
- 30:17Speaker 2: catching help with Will Smith out for a little while.
- 30:20Speaker 2: And yeah, I know the Dodgers. Uh, that's just the
- 30:24Speaker 2: rich getting richer. But they're not in your league. You
- 30:26Speaker 2: won't play something, don't make your potential opponents stronger.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, if we face the Dodgers in the World Series
- 30:32Speaker 1: and lose because of that trade, I think that's that's
- 30:35Speaker 1: still a good a good ending. Uh yeah, all right, Dan, Well,
- 30:42Speaker 1: then how about Victor Carrottini. This is from Jane Murk
- 30:44Speaker 1: twenty four. With all the talk of trading Jeffers, many
- 30:46Speaker 1: teams looking to at a catcher. Do you see a
- 30:48Speaker 1: scenario where the Twins opt to trade Carrotini instead and
- 30:52Speaker 1: rolling with the tantem of Jeffers and Jackson the rest
- 30:54Speaker 1: of the way.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Now, the reason they brought in Kartini they got my
- 31:00Speaker 2: two year deal, so he's got another year left, was
- 31:03Speaker 2: partly just because they don't have catching depth at the
- 31:05Speaker 2: top levels that they feel comfortable running out there every day.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I know that the Twins, like Noah Cardinas at Triple
- 31:11Speaker 2: A Saint Paul. But you know that'd be a rookie
- 31:15Speaker 2: you're introducing in. That's not who you're going with next year.
- 31:18Speaker 2: So if you trade Karatini, you'd be back at square
- 31:20Speaker 2: one where you need a starting catcher for next year.
- 31:23Speaker 2: And that's that's one of the reasons they liked him
- 31:25Speaker 2: because they got him for two years and fourteen million.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Is that in the year after Jeffers leaves via free agency,
- 31:32Speaker 2: Victor Carrottini was gonna be one of the two guys
- 31:35Speaker 2: that they count on next year to the starter. So
- 31:38Speaker 2: Kartini certainly could help a team. He's been a winner
- 31:41Speaker 2: wherever he's gone. You look at the teams he's played for.
- 31:44Speaker 2: He's been in the playoffs a lot of times. He
- 31:46Speaker 2: was on those Cubs teams, know Milwaukee. He's played some
- 31:50Speaker 2: really good teams in Houston, Like when we went back
- 31:53Speaker 2: to Houston at the end of June, at the end
- 31:56Speaker 2: of June early July, like there was a nice ovation
- 31:59Speaker 2: because Victor Karinte he played great for the Astros. So
- 32:03Speaker 2: he's the winning type player that I think teams would
- 32:05Speaker 2: look at. But the Twins need him for next year,
- 32:08Speaker 2: so I don't see them trading him. They knew all
- 32:10Speaker 2: along Jeffers could be gone at the end of this year,
- 32:12Speaker 2: and that's why they brought Carotenian.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Next on the list. From KG Heist nine, what are
- 32:20Speaker 1: some starting pitchers we could go get? And they throught
- 32:23Speaker 1: a few examples there, Peralta, Ray or Gossman. We'll start
- 32:27Speaker 1: with you in this one, Tyler. I guess, like I mean, obviously,
- 32:31Speaker 1: the answer is, well, what are you willing to give up?
- 32:33Speaker 1: And what's the team willing to give to you? But
- 32:36Speaker 1: are there any names that have stood out to you
- 32:37Speaker 1: as as potential upgrades for the one?
- 32:39Speaker 3: Paralta is the one I've you know, I got to
- 32:43Speaker 3: see him pitch plenty. You know, he's in Milwaukee and
- 32:45Speaker 3: we match up every year and things like that, and
- 32:47Speaker 3: he's got just electric stuff and from what I've gathered
- 32:51Speaker 3: just from you know, not watching the Mets every day.
- 32:54Speaker 3: But you know, they grabbed him because they wanted him
- 32:56Speaker 3: to be a dude, and he's just having a bad
- 32:58Speaker 3: year and could be New York affecting him, who knows,
- 33:02Speaker 3: you know, maybe it's just you know, the lights are
- 33:04Speaker 3: a little brighter.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Whatever it may be.
- 33:07Speaker 3: You know, he's the change of scenery candidate that everyone's
- 33:10Speaker 3: kind of talked about. You know, I don't know if
- 33:13Speaker 3: the Mets how much is left on his deal exactly.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Like that's where it gets interesting with Minnesota is you know,
- 33:19Speaker 3: they don't want to take on a big contract necessarily.
- 33:22Speaker 3: You know, yes, they want to add, but they don't
- 33:24Speaker 3: want to go spend a ton of money either, and
- 33:27Speaker 3: so that's where it gets interesting. But he's one that
- 33:32Speaker 3: for me would probably be a bye by low and
- 33:35Speaker 3: get a reward out of, you know, because for the return,
- 33:39Speaker 3: say he was having a if he was having a
- 33:41Speaker 3: normal year like he's supposed to, the Mets aren't even
- 33:44Speaker 3: considering getting rid of him, Like he's probably on a
- 33:46Speaker 3: deal at that point. So he's a guy that you know,
- 33:50Speaker 3: there's going to be a lot of teams interested, and
- 33:52Speaker 3: we talked about that before the show. It's like, it's
- 33:54Speaker 3: great for the Twins to want to make moves. The
- 33:57Speaker 3: problem is there's also a lot of other teams, even
- 34:00Speaker 3: the White Sox, that are right there as well, that
- 34:03Speaker 3: are trying to make a push, and so you could
- 34:06Speaker 3: be very well bidding for the same guys and you know,
- 34:09Speaker 3: getting offers against each other, and at that point it's like,
- 34:13Speaker 3: if we let this guy go to the White Sox,
- 34:15Speaker 3: well we have zero chance now. And so it's it's
- 34:18Speaker 3: gonna get interesting because there's the handful of teams that
- 34:21Speaker 3: need guys kind of how what offers are being made
- 34:25Speaker 3: that you know, if somebody blows them out of the
- 34:27Speaker 3: water with an offer, well you now have to match
- 34:30Speaker 3: it if you want the guy. And so that's part
- 34:33Speaker 3: of the you know, it's great to hear we're in
- 34:36Speaker 3: and want to buy, but the market kind of determines
- 34:40Speaker 3: value and if teams are willing to just throw something crazy,
- 34:43Speaker 3: you know, like we're talking about the Dodgers, if they
- 34:46Speaker 3: want a guy and they're willing to give them to
- 34:47Speaker 3: the farm, well nobody can compete with that.
- 34:50Speaker 5: You know.
- 34:51Speaker 4: It's it's just.
- 34:52Speaker 3: One of those if they want Scooble or they want whoever,
- 34:55Speaker 3: they're going to get their guy. And so, you know,
- 34:58Speaker 3: par aaltism one, I feel like he's not and under
- 35:00Speaker 3: the radar, but he's a good player. His track records great,
- 35:03Speaker 3: you know, he's healthy as far as we know. But
- 35:08Speaker 3: you know, and he's used to pitching in that part
- 35:10Speaker 3: of the country and maybe he just needs that Midwest
- 35:13Speaker 3: airback and his lungs.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Yeah he is after this year, but oh there you go.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know where they're gonna go, but I
- 35:24Speaker 2: do know. We'll see. Let's see what Joe Ryan does tonight.
- 35:27Speaker 2: By the way, that's a big deal after arm fatigue
- 35:31Speaker 2: and after his last start. But like you feel like
- 35:35Speaker 2: if Joe Ryan is a good version of himself. With
- 35:38Speaker 2: Joe Ryan and TODs Bradley, you feel like you have
- 35:40Speaker 2: some really good starters to throw in a short series
- 35:43Speaker 2: if you were to make the playoffs. So you don't
- 35:45Speaker 2: necessarily need to get a frontline guy. You need to
- 35:48Speaker 2: get something solid. I don't know what names to say
- 35:52Speaker 2: are reasonable. There's so many teams that are wishy washy
- 35:54Speaker 2: right now. Uh we like Robbie Ray's name is thrown
- 35:57Speaker 2: out there all the time, like guys like that. Like
- 36:02Speaker 2: what the Twins need to do is just get some depth.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Because Connor Prelip is now what ninety plus innings for
- 36:09Speaker 2: the season and he's never thrown. Last year was his
- 36:13Speaker 2: hide eighty two and two thirds. So you're not in
- 36:15Speaker 2: the red yet. They are clearly monitoring that, and they
- 36:18Speaker 2: have so many ways to monitor that as simple as
- 36:21Speaker 2: like his leg strength and like how much of a
- 36:24Speaker 2: vertical you can get. They keep tabs on what you
- 36:27Speaker 2: can jump all year to see where your leg strength
- 36:30Speaker 2: is at. And when you're getting low and your legs
- 36:34Speaker 2: are not good, they know your legs aren't gonna be
- 36:36Speaker 2: under you. They start to worry about the arm because
- 36:38Speaker 2: that's where you overcompensate, right, You just got to find
- 36:42Speaker 2: a way to give yourself some depth there. Kendrick Rojas,
- 36:46Speaker 2: I imagine we'll see pitch a little deeper into games,
- 36:49Speaker 2: but this is a part of the year where you
- 36:51Speaker 2: want some veteran depth. So they don't have to get
- 36:53Speaker 2: a one or two. They just need to bolster the rotation.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I actually it's funny they listed a bullpen as there priority.
- 37:01Speaker 2: But I think with the with the state of the rotation,
- 37:04Speaker 2: you just you never know when injury is coming. You
- 37:07Speaker 2: never know when Kyle Gibson isn't going to have like
- 37:10Speaker 2: get healthy, and then Michael Pineda's got gets suspended out
- 37:14Speaker 2: of nowhere. That team is lacking depth, and then all
- 37:18Speaker 2: of a sudden, Tonight's Kansas City starter Randy Dobnack is
- 37:21Speaker 2: on the mount. In Game two, and I love Randy Dobnack,
- 37:24Speaker 2: but man, that was one of those feelings, like, Wow,
- 37:26Speaker 2: they're up against it right now. It's gonna want to
- 37:29Speaker 2: be in that position.
- 37:29Speaker 1: That's what I was talking about with the Buckson situation earlier.
- 37:32Speaker 1: It's like, you know, you you you go to this,
- 37:34Speaker 1: you go into this deadline thinking it's pitching, pitching, pitching,
- 37:37Speaker 1: but then a couple injuries and all of a sudden,
- 37:39Speaker 1: it's hitting that you need to So it's no, I
- 37:42Speaker 1: wouldn't want to be a GM.
- 37:44Speaker 2: No, no, but you can't replace Byron Buckston, right, you
- 37:47Speaker 2: know that. But you do have Walker Jenkins and Matt
- 37:50Speaker 2: Walner's down there hitting too, and not that Matt Walner's
- 37:53Speaker 2: could be a center fielder, but you do have Walker Jenkins,
- 37:56Speaker 2: and you do have like that's a top prospect that
- 37:58Speaker 2: you could try to plug in. So that's you're going
- 38:02Speaker 2: to try and if that's something you face, you're gonna
- 38:04Speaker 2: try to fill that Internally. The Twins don't have the
- 38:08Speaker 2: ready made starting pitcher or bullpen guys to fill in.
- 38:11Speaker 2: And that's why I don't think Buxton would impact their deadline.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I mean, you've got to feel good about putting Walker
- 38:18Speaker 2: Jenkins out there and giving them some runway. If that's
- 38:21Speaker 2: the case, it's not, Yeah, I just think that's you know,
- 38:26Speaker 2: a different a different question for them.
- 38:29Speaker 3: You know, like a serviceable arm, a simple ad, not
- 38:32Speaker 3: an all start makes your bullpen better at the end
- 38:34Speaker 3: of the day too, if you have a starter that yeah,
- 38:37Speaker 3: is going to go out and just give you a
- 38:38Speaker 3: quality five every time. Like that's you don't need them
- 38:41Speaker 3: to go seven or eight, Like go quality five innings
- 38:44Speaker 3: every time you go out. That helps the bullpen every
- 38:47Speaker 3: time they don't have to come into the third, fourth,
- 38:49Speaker 3: or fifth inning or whatever it may be. And so
- 38:51Speaker 3: it's just not that that's been happening all the time,
- 38:53Speaker 3: but it's it's just stress as well. The more outings
- 38:56Speaker 3: they have, the more odds there are a bad one coming.
- 38:59Speaker 3: And you know you have a guy that you know, hey,
- 39:02Speaker 3: this guy's going to go this many innings. You know,
- 39:04Speaker 3: you piggyback with pre lib barojas or you know, piece
- 39:07Speaker 3: it together.
- 39:08Speaker 4: But just one to add an innings eater.
- 39:10Speaker 3: At this point is useful, you know, because the Twins
- 39:12Speaker 3: are going to score late, keep them in the game,
- 39:15Speaker 3: get it to the back end of the pen, like
- 39:17Speaker 3: that's that's a good recipe, you know.
- 39:19Speaker 4: So it's it doesn't have to be a huge move,
- 39:21Speaker 4: like who keeps.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Saying we have time for one more And I'm going
- 39:25Speaker 1: to wrap two questions into one to take care of
- 39:31Speaker 1: two people at once. Eric Nelson eighty seven eighty six
- 39:33Speaker 1: ask do you have a sense on the caliber of
- 39:35Speaker 1: prospects the Twins are likely to trade? Five to ten,
- 39:38Speaker 1: ten to twenty. I know they say they're opening anything,
- 39:41Speaker 1: but realistically for this deadline, what do you think? And
- 39:43Speaker 1: then another question from Pop one thirty as someone lacking
- 39:47Speaker 1: depth of knowledge outside the Twins, or I wonder who
- 39:50Speaker 1: would the Twins acquire that would make you very pleased?
- 39:54Speaker 1: And I'm living them together because obviously with any trade,
- 39:57Speaker 1: like yeah, it'd be great to add Trek Skoubl, but
- 40:00Speaker 1: you have to give up giving up, right, So so
- 40:03Speaker 1: it's sort of like where where where is the threading
- 40:06Speaker 1: of the needle that ends in something that I think
- 40:09Speaker 1: that we think fans should be pleased about. And Tyler,
- 40:12Speaker 1: I'll start with you now.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Uh so like the prospect spot, like you know, you
- 40:17Speaker 3: don't want to short side yourself for next season, you know,
- 40:20Speaker 3: with your guys, you never know what's going to happen.
- 40:24Speaker 3: But for me, I feel like there's a surplus of
- 40:27Speaker 3: outfield as much as we're talking about Byron and his
- 40:31Speaker 3: you know what ifs, at the same time that feels
- 40:34Speaker 3: like there's a bit of a log jam, especially with
- 40:36Speaker 3: guys moving around things like that. So I don't know,
- 40:39Speaker 3: I won't put a name on anybody, but like, you know,
- 40:42Speaker 3: potentially there's a move where you have a big league
- 40:44Speaker 3: outfielder that you're using that could move, you know, with
- 40:48Speaker 3: a prospect something like that. I you know, as far
- 40:52Speaker 3: as who, I mean, the the the guys, Gossman, Peralta,
- 40:58Speaker 3: you know, I don't know the whole list of who's
- 40:59Speaker 3: even a bail right now because he's no teams are
- 41:02Speaker 3: really out of it.
- 41:03Speaker 4: So it makes it so tough.
- 41:04Speaker 3: But I think, like I was just saying, a starter,
- 41:07Speaker 3: a dependable starter of some sort, you know, if you
- 41:10Speaker 3: can get them for a fair price, you know, without
- 41:14Speaker 3: giving up You can't. You can't give up your I
- 41:16Speaker 3: don't think you give up your top five or ten,
- 41:18Speaker 3: you know, maybe the number ten it would be safe,
- 41:22Speaker 3: but you know, it's prospect lists. I've talked about this
- 41:25Speaker 3: before or just a I don't want to say they're
- 41:28Speaker 3: made up, because that's not fair. But it's just it's
- 41:31Speaker 3: a propect list, you know, it's it's guessing, throwing darts
- 41:35Speaker 3: in the dark.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Hopefully it works out.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I've played with a lot of guys that were not
- 41:39Speaker 3: prospects in the major leagues.
- 41:41Speaker 4: You know, the one that.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Comes to mind off hand, even as Taylor Rogers was
- 41:44Speaker 3: he was an eleventh round pick out of Kentucky and
- 41:48Speaker 3: here he is.
- 41:48Speaker 4: He's, you know, thriving in that role.
- 41:51Speaker 3: You know, I've played with the guys that were twentieth
- 41:53Speaker 3: round picks, guys that are not even their round zone
- 41:56Speaker 3: don't even exist anymore, and we're never prospects. So that point,
- 42:00Speaker 3: it's just like you never know what you're going to
- 42:03Speaker 3: give up, and sometimes the big league ready piece is
- 42:07Speaker 3: worth a potential prospect, and you just hope it doesn't
- 42:12Speaker 3: work out too well for.
- 42:13Speaker 4: The other guy.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna do the opposite, you know, the monster
- 42:20Speaker 2: truck commercial Sunday Sunday Sunday Miller or Bust. Look, that's
- 42:31Speaker 2: gonna be extremely expensive. Would a Pete Fairbanks who is
- 42:36Speaker 2: struggling in Miami makes sense? His fastball is not very good, right,
- 42:40Speaker 2: now he's a free agent after the year. Would it
- 42:43Speaker 2: shock me if that's the kind of guy they try
- 42:44Speaker 2: to target. No, like a free agent at the end
- 42:48Speaker 2: of the year, and you can get him and bring
- 42:49Speaker 2: him in and he should help your bullpen. He's really
- 42:52Speaker 2: struggling with the Marlins. The Marlins seem like they're gonna sell,
- 42:57Speaker 2: but I, you know, like I just think pen is
- 43:00Speaker 2: the area that they target the hardest. And you know,
- 43:05Speaker 2: maybe Trevor Larnick if they were to trade him, and
- 43:07Speaker 2: I don't know that they will, especially with Byron to
- 43:11Speaker 2: see it, but Larnick could probably get you some help
- 43:15Speaker 2: there and get you a major league reliever back. And
- 43:20Speaker 2: then again you're looking maybe at Walker Jenkins coming up.
- 43:23Speaker 2: I don't know how this plays out, but as far
- 43:26Speaker 2: as what prospects they're willing to give up, I don't
- 43:28Speaker 2: see Walker Jenkins game moved. I don't see Kalin Culpepper
- 43:31Speaker 2: getting moved. They're not going to mortgage the future. Look,
- 43:34Speaker 2: there's still gonna be some reality attached to all this,
- 43:37Speaker 2: some some realism that they are fifty four and fifty
- 43:39Speaker 2: four and that they've been terrible pitching all year. Their
- 43:43Speaker 2: run differentials not very good, they realize that they're playing
- 43:46Speaker 2: and the reason why they're alive is because they're playing
- 43:49Speaker 2: well in a very watered down American League. They saw
- 43:52Speaker 2: what the Dodgers looked like up close. They got swept
- 43:54Speaker 2: at home. They were competitive in two or three games
- 43:57Speaker 2: of that series, but they still got swept. So I
- 43:59Speaker 2: think they're reality attached that the gap between the Dodgers
- 44:05Speaker 2: and the Phillies and the Braves, you know, those guys
- 44:08Speaker 2: are up here, and then you've got the American League
- 44:11Speaker 2: down here. Like there's some teams in the American League
- 44:13Speaker 2: that could put up a fight, there's no question, but
- 44:16Speaker 2: I think they realized that where they are, so we're
- 44:19Speaker 2: not gonna see them go all in. But it doesn't
- 44:21Speaker 2: mean you can't enhance. And this is a team that
- 44:24Speaker 2: before they added von Lackey a few weeks ago in
- 44:27Speaker 2: the draft, before they added you know that whole draft class.
- 44:30Speaker 2: In May, mlb dot Com ranked them as the ninth
- 44:33Speaker 2: best farm system in baseball. They've had some positive developments
- 44:36Speaker 2: go on over the course of the year. There are
- 44:38Speaker 2: interesting pieces in that farm system, and it doesn't have
- 44:41Speaker 2: to be the top guys to still put together a
- 44:43Speaker 2: good package. Very rarely do you see teams get top
- 44:47Speaker 2: one hundred prospects in trades? Last year the Twins got
- 44:50Speaker 2: Eduardo Taji, who was Phillies, a top fifty guy for
- 44:54Speaker 2: the Joan Durant trade. That's a very rare deal where
- 44:59Speaker 2: one of those guys is include.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Just quickly, I'll say, what would make me please is
- 45:05Speaker 1: meaningful improvement to the current team at a cost that
- 45:08Speaker 1: makes logical sense, like right right, Trading Ryan Jeffers makes
- 45:13Speaker 1: logical sense if you're not planning to bring him back
- 45:15Speaker 1: and he's somebody who could bring you meaningful return. Obviously
- 45:19Speaker 1: that could go a lot of ways. Who exactly that
- 45:21Speaker 1: player is could be a lot of people, But but
- 45:24Speaker 1: it's it's the trades where you go, what the hell
- 45:27Speaker 1: are they doing with this? That that leave you, I
- 45:29Speaker 1: think with the with the with the stink in the mouth,
- 45:31Speaker 1: but stink in the mouth.
- 45:33Speaker 2: That's a very rational, very rational answer. Thanks exactly, very.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Que very un Minnesota of you.
- 45:40Speaker 2: A very sane and rational response, right there.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Joe Ryan versus Randy Dobnick Tonight, fun one at target Field,
- 45:49Speaker 1: Bailey over and Noah Cameron Thursday in the finale. We'll
- 45:52Speaker 1: be back with you Friday before the Seattle series. Maybe
- 45:55Speaker 1: there'll be a trade. Maybe we'll keep talking about what
- 45:57Speaker 1: might happen. We'll see we will catch you then, thanks
- 46:01Speaker 1: everybody for listening, and we'll see you next time.
- 46:02Speaker 5: Bye bye,
