- 0:00Speaker 1: M this is the Meat Eater podcast coming at you, shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: folk bitten, and in my case, underwear listening. I'm making
- 0:16Speaker 1: a podcast. You can't predict anything. Mm hmm. How's it going?
- 0:45Speaker 1: Everybody all right? Mhm uh? Everybody here has been a
- 0:52Speaker 1: State Theater today today, just today. I saw um the
- 0:59Speaker 1: Cowboy Junkies many years ago, and I feel that mine
- 1:04Speaker 1: you saw weird out here. Really, I feel that my
- 1:09Speaker 1: it wound up being like that was the first time
- 1:13Speaker 1: I was at State Theater. And it turned out that
- 1:18Speaker 1: me and my wife think that she was there too,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but she would have been way too young for me
- 1:23Speaker 1: to be gawking at the time. But I feel that
- 1:26Speaker 1: she was not saying that wasn't but I shouldn't have been. Uh,
- 1:31Speaker 1: we think so. And then later I came you and me, Uh,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I came here to see Bob Dylan and that night,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I don't know if you remember, I have a picture.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Uh We're sitting there and I was arguing that jello
- 1:45Speaker 1: shots don't actually make you drunk, because I had this
- 1:49Speaker 1: theory that something happened to the alcohol. Do you remember
- 1:54Speaker 1: this show, taking a little time out in the footwell,
- 2:03Speaker 1: blow the seats up there somewhere up top, and you know,
- 2:07Speaker 1: like at a concert, everybody gets all their season comes
- 2:09Speaker 1: down too, you know, dance around. Well when I when
- 2:15Speaker 1: I get down my nap, I come down looking for
- 2:19Speaker 1: everyone and catch my body Eric doing like a little
- 2:24Speaker 1: bit like that, you know what, you kind of like
- 2:25Speaker 1: dance behind someone a little bit. But it was like, yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I come down like really because he's kind of a
- 2:32Speaker 1: little like he's like a little bit doing like the
- 2:36Speaker 1: I'm right behind your dancing too behind with my girlfriend
- 2:42Speaker 1: at State Theater. Not to me, um, I got a
- 2:49Speaker 1: let's do in aductions that I gotta coupe people, gotta
- 2:51Speaker 1: say hi to no. We have the lavin eagle weight
- 2:54Speaker 1: on the end. Thank him, Uh, Mark Kenyon from water
- 3:02Speaker 1: to hug a huge round of applause for our very
- 3:08Speaker 1: good friend from growing up Matt Droskys, a low profile
- 3:11Speaker 1: get the low ron bam who was kind of kind
- 3:20Speaker 1: enough to give me employment uh for several years and
- 3:24Speaker 1: then friendship for many more after. And then my big
- 3:26Speaker 1: brother Matt Ronelan. Where we're out here is Ada. There's
- 3:36Speaker 1: an eleven year old Ada. Okay, listen, your dad needs
- 3:45Speaker 1: you to understand that listening to the Meat Eater podcast
- 3:50Speaker 1: is better and more important for your mind and spirit
- 3:54Speaker 1: than listening to Bruno mars Uh. Hello to Officer Darren McIntosh,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you out there, Thank you. Um now, Also, my mother's
- 4:15Speaker 1: here tonight, So Rosemary Ranella, we're gonna we're gonna play
- 4:22Speaker 1: a game later. We're gonna play a game called Seeing
- 4:25Speaker 1: through the Bullshit. And so someone has to come up
- 4:28Speaker 1: and be the contestant. And we took a blank map
- 4:32Speaker 1: of the theater with all the seats on it and
- 4:34Speaker 1: gave it to my mother, Rosemary. Two select a seat
- 4:40Speaker 1: who will be the person that gets to come play
- 4:42Speaker 1: the game and win something. And my mother made a
- 4:45Speaker 1: big deal out of selecting someone from the balcony because
- 4:50Speaker 1: she likes the root for the underdogs. A lucky, a lucky,
- 4:57Speaker 1: a lucky player up there will be called down to
- 5:01Speaker 1: do that. And then, uh, one more thing. We'll get
- 5:03Speaker 1: to you guys later too. But birthdays. And we've got
- 5:05Speaker 1: birthdays here tonight, I mean a lot really tonight. That
- 5:10Speaker 1: mean tonight isn't your birthday? Oh then you won't win
- 5:16Speaker 1: like birthdays today? Okay, the oldest, if you're old, you're
- 5:24Speaker 1: in luck. We'll get to that later. If it's your
- 5:27Speaker 1: birthday and you're old, you're in luck. Um cover that now.
- 5:32Speaker 1: A couple of got hit a couple of news items
- 5:34Speaker 1: like we like to do. They they just had you
- 5:37Speaker 1: guys heard of this the there was like a organized
- 5:40Speaker 1: squirrel hunt in New Jersey. They got badly protested by
- 5:46Speaker 1: the League of the League of Humane. Let me get
- 5:49Speaker 1: this right, it's the League of Humane. Voters organized the
- 5:53Speaker 1: protest against the squirrel hunt. The organizer was saying, it's
- 5:58Speaker 1: very disconcerting the idea of being a family friendly event.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Look at the strong correlation of kids who commit violence
- 6:06Speaker 1: against animals as children and then grow up to be
- 6:08Speaker 1: violent against people. Writer Listener wrote in, and he was saying,
- 6:13Speaker 1: it's weirdest. Part of the plan of the squirrel hunt
- 6:15Speaker 1: was to teach people how to acquire and prepara wild game.
- 6:19Speaker 1: If the organizer's assertion is true, would it not stand
- 6:22Speaker 1: a reason that children who are raised eating meat from
- 6:24Speaker 1: a grocery store are more likely to hire hit men
- 6:26Speaker 1: to commit violent acts against people on their behalf also
- 6:33Speaker 1: got an interesting note from a dude, a good Midwestern
- 6:36Speaker 1: boy who bought a new bow and the guys that
- 6:39Speaker 1: the bullshot were saying, man, if you want to get
- 6:41Speaker 1: dialed for hunting, you shoot the bowl like how you
- 6:44Speaker 1: would shoot hunting. And he's playing a hunting a tree stand,
- 6:49Speaker 1: but his yard has no tree stands, so he takes
- 6:52Speaker 1: the hunting from the phone pole to practicing from the
- 6:56Speaker 1: phone pole out on the street. And by the time
- 6:59Speaker 1: the police come him and the municipality guy comes, it
- 7:03Speaker 1: makes him take a stand down with it. Did give
- 7:04Speaker 1: him a line on where to go buy his own
- 7:06Speaker 1: phone pole that he can bury it into his yard. Uh.
- 7:11Speaker 1: We're talking about Norway recently, where a guy run in
- 7:14Speaker 1: with an ethical dilemma from Norway and another guy rode
- 7:17Speaker 1: in with a Norway expression. What was the hunting one?
- 7:24Speaker 1: The German one? And it means like good luck hunting,
- 7:31Speaker 1: like a like the best of luck hunting. Yeah, he
- 7:33Speaker 1: got talking about that. And in Norway they say skit jacked,
- 7:39Speaker 1: which means I hope you have ship hunting. And it's
- 7:44Speaker 1: like the same as saying It's the same as saying
- 7:46Speaker 1: like break a leg like you give you know what
- 7:48Speaker 1: I mean? They don't want to jinx his outing, so
- 7:51Speaker 1: you hit him like that. Can you say it again?
- 7:53Speaker 1: I want to make sure remember that it's well s
- 7:58Speaker 1: k I T T, which gonna go with skits skits
- 8:02Speaker 1: j A k T, which I'm gonna go with that's
- 8:07Speaker 1: something to do with hunting JK. That's a yah. I
- 8:11Speaker 1: hope you have a ship. I think you should all
- 8:15Speaker 1: use the Latvian version of that instead, because we have
- 8:17Speaker 1: pretty much the same thing, two different versions of it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: We say either shall we godum, which means basically shoot
- 8:25Speaker 1: past them or over him, So you're saying like good luck,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I hope you miss kind of the Other thing we
- 8:34Speaker 1: say is um life to follow on Netta's at, which
- 8:38Speaker 1: means I hope that you don't see hide nor hair.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Really there's These are both Latvian ones. Can you welcome
- 8:45Speaker 1: everybody tonight in Latvian love love vocard? There another another
- 8:54Speaker 1: one last news item and and and I know Matt
- 8:58Speaker 1: Droles you sent this to me recently, like you grow
- 9:02Speaker 1: up these parts taking for granted that you can just
- 9:05Speaker 1: go down and walk down the beach, Just take a
- 9:09Speaker 1: walk down the damn beach because this is America. Um.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And the Supreme Court just confirmed that, yes, in fact,
- 9:15Speaker 1: this is America. But what's that The Great Lakes? The
- 9:21Speaker 1: Great Lakes are America, so Indiana and Michigan. The Supreme
- 9:25Speaker 1: Court actually refused to hear the hearing contesting the ability
- 9:29Speaker 1: to walk the high water mark. Yeah, dude, a couple.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I'm just throwing out the two people, Donald and Bobby Gunderson.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But they suffer from is they suffer from a problem
- 9:44Speaker 1: that happens in American society with some people where it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: I think like to think of it as too bad.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It isn't true that like you buy a house on
- 9:55Speaker 1: the beach and the next day here's some dirt bag
- 9:58Speaker 1: walking down the beach surf casting, and you're like, you're mad,
- 10:01Speaker 1: it isn't illegal to that guy. I wasn't down there
- 10:05Speaker 1: on my beach. And then they just have the energy
- 10:07Speaker 1: and time to try to like my dream, My dream
- 10:13Speaker 1: would be that the people who are enjoying that area,
- 10:18Speaker 1: uh just down there, you know, taken in the sun.
- 10:21Speaker 1: My dream is that they couldn't enjoy that area. And
- 10:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna spend a lot of money preventing them from
- 10:28Speaker 1: a joint. But so the Supreme Court not hearing it.
- 10:31Speaker 1: They like, challenge it got shot down. Challenge it got
- 10:33Speaker 1: shot down, and they took the Freme Court and the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Free Court refused to hear it, said that the law
- 10:38Speaker 1: stands as is. You know, the high water mark is
- 10:41Speaker 1: public public domain. So summer is still on everyone, So
- 10:46Speaker 1: summer is still scheduled. This is kind of newsy, but
- 10:50Speaker 1: so we hit it right now while it's while we're
- 10:51Speaker 1: talking about news, a little bit of news. Mark, You're
- 10:54Speaker 1: gonna do a recap Mark, Canyon Wired Hunt. This is
- 10:56Speaker 1: the wire to Hunt Michigan deer season recape. What happened? Mark, Well,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I think the big thing we were talking about discussing
- 11:09Speaker 1: was a little bit not frank Um demographics, a little
- 11:13Speaker 1: bit what kind of success rate hunter saw, what kind
- 11:16Speaker 1: of participation we saw. And I will preface this by
- 11:19Speaker 1: saying that the data available is split between two years,
- 11:21Speaker 1: because there's not harvest data available yet for the two
- 11:24Speaker 1: thousand eighteen season, but there is license sales data available
- 11:28Speaker 1: from this season. So first off, an interesting thing of
- 11:31Speaker 1: note is that this year she has eighteen They're about
- 11:34Speaker 1: just over six hundred thousand deer hunters in the state
- 11:37Speaker 1: of Michigan. That is a lot of deer hunters, one
- 11:41Speaker 1: of the highest numbers of deer hunters in the country,
- 11:43Speaker 1: but it's down nearly a hundred thousand in just the
- 11:46Speaker 1: last five years. Very significant drop drop off, and that
- 11:51Speaker 1: is down two hundred thousand deer hunters from a high
- 11:54Speaker 1: point of seven or eight five thousand. So we're seeing
- 12:00Speaker 1: that pretty precipitous drop. That's the downer good news front. Um,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe not a good news front, depends
- 12:08Speaker 1: on how you look at it. But we had the
- 12:10Speaker 1: second highest number of bucks killed first state in the
- 12:14Speaker 1: entire country. So the only state that killed more bucks. Yes,
- 12:23Speaker 1: when you're talking about food and you're like, oh, you
- 12:27Speaker 1: know they eat it in Japan anything to do with deer,
- 12:33Speaker 1: you're like, let me guess, Yeah, it's Texas or any
- 12:36Speaker 1: funky things too. Yeah, So old Michigan killed second only
- 12:40Speaker 1: the Texas, second only Texas. Yeah, and that is the
- 12:44Speaker 1: third highest. No, let me take that back to the
- 12:48Speaker 1: first or second highest bucks per square mile in the
- 12:51Speaker 1: entire nation, three times the national average. So we're killing
- 12:56Speaker 1: a lot of we're killing a lot of deer, killing
- 12:58Speaker 1: how many people in here? God it deer this year
- 13:03Speaker 1: man crowd stolen cool. I think I can say with
- 13:09Speaker 1: a lot of confidence that we have above average deer
- 13:12Speaker 1: hunters in this room because because exactly fifty of the
- 13:21Speaker 1: deer hunters in this state killed the deer this past year. Success. Right.
- 13:28Speaker 1: If you bump that up to how many people killed
- 13:30Speaker 1: more than one deer? What's your guess? What percentage of
- 13:34Speaker 1: license hunters killed more than one deer? Killed a deer?
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna go what do you think? Pretty? Five? Five?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Really big drop off from one to two or more? Uh?
- 13:56Speaker 1: I killed two deer this year in Michigan. NA people, Yeah, yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 1: any any other any other good Michigan inside people all
- 14:08Speaker 1: know about. Yeah, you did a good job. You got
- 14:11Speaker 1: all this memorize nothing written on my Okay hand check. Um.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Bow hunting in Michigan very very popular. I think a
- 14:22Speaker 1: lot of deer hunters like to talk about how there's
- 14:24Speaker 1: so much bow hunting pressure in this state. I sometimes
- 14:27Speaker 1: use as an excuse for why it's tough in this state. Um, well,
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's backed up by fact we had three hundred and
- 14:33Speaker 1: eleven thousand. Is it because of crossbows? I do not
- 14:40Speaker 1: know the answer to that. I don't know what the
- 14:41Speaker 1: breakdowns between crossbow and bow. But a lot of a
- 14:44Speaker 1: lot of passionate bow hunters in this state, and we
- 14:47Speaker 1: have the third highest number of bucks killed per square
- 14:50Speaker 1: mile in the country with archer equipment, I think if
- 14:53Speaker 1: I remember that correctly, is the number of bow hunters?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Is that number going up or down? I haven't seen
- 14:57Speaker 1: a trend on that. I would guess it's probably parallels
- 15:00Speaker 1: the overall What are they attributing? I know it's a
- 15:04Speaker 1: host of things, and I kind of already know that
- 15:05Speaker 1: it's unanswerable. But what are your insights? What are they
- 15:07Speaker 1: attribute What are they attributing to the um the number decline?
- 15:13Speaker 1: Have you seen the number of like the total number
- 15:15Speaker 1: of people like that compared to ours spent a field?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Is it like? Are we losing the like are we
- 15:23Speaker 1: losing a lot of like the Lamo weekend? One weekend
- 15:26Speaker 1: a year? Dudes? Are we losing like the hardcores? Like?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Who are we losing? So I haven't seen data as
- 15:32Speaker 1: far as that. I can make some assumptions because you
- 15:34Speaker 1: can stay lame o, you know what I mean? Like, Yeah,
- 15:38Speaker 1: that's a horrible word choice. That's one of those things
- 15:41Speaker 1: you say in life, the one of these yeah, week
- 15:44Speaker 1: like a warrior of the weekend, a guy who likes
- 15:52Speaker 1: what what's happening? Basically is that and this is kind
- 15:55Speaker 1: of the thing you're seeing across the entire nation is
- 15:57Speaker 1: that there was this very large group of baby boomers
- 16:01Speaker 1: that came in and for a number of different reasons,
- 16:04Speaker 1: took on hunting very popular within that demographic, and that
- 16:08Speaker 1: group has just been aging. So if you look at
- 16:10Speaker 1: the curve of hunting participation by age, you know, twenty
- 16:14Speaker 1: years ago you saw like thirty or forty year olds
- 16:17Speaker 1: or whatever that Brackett was, that was our highest chunk
- 16:19Speaker 1: of hunters. And then is you look for ten years
- 16:22Speaker 1: that Brackett just moves further down, and now we see
- 16:25Speaker 1: our highest participation of hunters are in that like fifty
- 16:28Speaker 1: four to seventy rangers, high sixties. And so what's happening
- 16:32Speaker 1: is that your number of hunters every year, retained hunters
- 16:37Speaker 1: is dropping off because I can't remember that the age
- 16:39Speaker 1: of seventy or seventy two or somewhere around there. Um,
- 16:42Speaker 1: there's a very hard line where participation usually starts to
- 16:45Speaker 1: dramatically drop off people aging out. So we've got we've
- 16:49Speaker 1: had a very large segment of the hunting community that's
- 16:51Speaker 1: aging out and that's not being filled back in at
- 16:53Speaker 1: the top of the funnel with younger hunters. Another interesting Michigan.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Thing is that I saw data from two thousand through
- 16:59Speaker 1: fifty team that showed the number of new hunters coming
- 17:02Speaker 1: in if some might remember that back in twelve thirteen,
- 17:06Speaker 1: somewhere around there were encouraged because there were some new
- 17:08Speaker 1: numbers that showed across the nation hunting participation was up
- 17:11Speaker 1: a little bit. Um, so that was kind of a
- 17:14Speaker 1: reason to celebrate. Well, this data showed in Michigan that
- 17:18Speaker 1: the number of new hunters is still actually going down.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So we're ore ore our three you know, attempts, recruitment, retention, etcetera. Um,
- 17:28Speaker 1: maybe we're at least from twos in thirteen and fifteen
- 17:31Speaker 1: was moving the wrong direction, which was not pective here.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Like trend Yeah, so like the hun's gonna get Michigan
- 17:43Speaker 1: Hun's gonna get better and better. It depends on how
- 17:46Speaker 1: you're looking at it. I guess they're looking if you
- 17:48Speaker 1: want less less pumpkins in the woods, yeah, which I mean,
- 17:53Speaker 1: like selfishly, would I like it if there's fewer people.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It would be nice for my own personal hunting, But
- 17:59Speaker 1: for the long it's not. It's not what you want
- 18:01Speaker 1: as long as it's like it might feel immediately beneficial,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but there's Uh, there's a long term play that some
- 18:09Speaker 1: people feel that long term play becomes compromised exactly. Okay, Uh,
- 18:13Speaker 1: if you had to hit Michigan and one word and
- 18:19Speaker 1: it can't be a hand gesture, Michigan is a single word,
- 18:27Speaker 1: what would the word be? Do I go first? I
- 18:33Speaker 1: can go first? You're not ready? Can let you guys?
- 18:35Speaker 1: Give you some time? Okay, I call a second all right,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I think someone else might take I'm gonna now, I'm
- 18:42Speaker 1: picking this where net because I've been gone now for
- 18:44Speaker 1: twenty years, but I'm gonna go with green, green, green?
- 18:53Speaker 1: What's sense? That's true? Man? What sense? That's a good point,
- 18:56Speaker 1: just like the color like color. Yeah, because being in
- 18:59Speaker 1: the last men, you don't realize you're throwing off here,
- 19:01Speaker 1: how green and how jungle like this foliage is. When
- 19:04Speaker 1: I come back now in the summer, we're not just
- 19:06Speaker 1: going driving down these boulevards that you know, giant overhanging oaks,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, the big giant leaves, and it's just so green,
- 19:13Speaker 1: and you know, I feel it in my soul. When
- 19:16Speaker 1: I was spending a lot of time out in Matt's
- 19:17Speaker 1: Neck of the Woods out in eastern Montana, I would
- 19:20Speaker 1: come here and be struck by the foliage. But then
- 19:26Speaker 1: it was cool. But then, like I lost that buzz
- 19:28Speaker 1: kind of living in the Pacific Northwest. But I think
- 19:30Speaker 1: it'll come back now. Yeah. Like to look from an
- 19:33Speaker 1: airplane and just see that line of leaves, Man, it's reassuring.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But God's bleak in the winter. H not today. It
- 19:47Speaker 1: was beautiful today. I thought you were saying we're green,
- 19:51Speaker 1: like a bunch of new hunters. I didn't really pictures
- 19:55Speaker 1: the land carpeted in cash um a bunch of marijuana
- 20:01Speaker 1: growing into the wood. What do you got, Marke that
- 20:07Speaker 1: did just become legalized? Um tradition? Tradition? Yeah, I think
- 20:12Speaker 1: I look at Michigan and I see a estate filled
- 20:16Speaker 1: with a lot of passion for the tradition. Funding and
- 20:19Speaker 1: then also so I'd say it's like the macro level tradition.
- 20:21Speaker 1: But then also personally, you know, when I think of
- 20:24Speaker 1: Michigan hunting, it's the tradition of my family, deer camp
- 20:27Speaker 1: and spending time with family in those those moments. Everyone,
- 20:35Speaker 1: everyone up here except Ronnie was born Great State of Michigan. No,
- 20:41Speaker 1: that's not true. I was born in Hinsdale. You were
- 20:45Speaker 1: how old when you moved to Michigan two months about
- 20:50Speaker 1: that that? Yeah, that's right. Where was that where Kinsdale,
- 20:56Speaker 1: Illinois suburb? I was both born in Indiana with Indiana
- 21:00Speaker 1: Oh never mind, I thought I was. I thought, like, man,
- 21:08Speaker 1: but everybodys up here is a faker sands plans. How
- 21:11Speaker 1: do they say that formative yearsatiformative? We've all spent former
- 21:17Speaker 1: years here. I got more Michigan laid up right here
- 21:19Speaker 1: than you boys. Um Man, what do you got? One word? Man? Like?
- 21:25Speaker 1: So I thought about this when you asked this question earlier,
- 21:27Speaker 1: and like I kind of don't want to say what
- 21:29Speaker 1: I was thinking, but like I want to stay adorable adorable,
- 21:32Speaker 1: but like, but like I have to describe what I
- 21:36Speaker 1: mean when I say that, because it's because you got
- 21:38Speaker 1: to be like a special dude to use the word
- 21:40Speaker 1: a door, right exactly. I was like, like, what's he
- 21:43Speaker 1: talking about? Adorable? Anyone kick his ass? Like no, Like,
- 21:45Speaker 1: I mean, like it's like it's adorable. Yeah, it's like
- 21:49Speaker 1: it kind of plays off that tradition. It's like this,
- 21:51Speaker 1: like it's like, you know, it's complex, it's got all
- 21:54Speaker 1: these things, all the seasons, like the big city of
- 21:56Speaker 1: the small city that like the urban like it's got
- 21:58Speaker 1: all of that. It's kind of like Norman Rockwell adorable
- 22:02Speaker 1: sort of like sense to it, but yet like it's
- 22:04Speaker 1: also kind of a qualifier for like bigger state stuff.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Like it's a qualifier like for moving tom On Town.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It's a qualifier for last it's got you know, you
- 22:13Speaker 1: can fish salmon here. You know you can't fish that
- 22:16Speaker 1: in many states. So in the you know, Colstalt states,
- 22:18Speaker 1: there's a big game here. Like, so it's got a
- 22:20Speaker 1: little bit of everything. So that was kind of adorable.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Makes me want to panic because I can't come up
- 22:31Speaker 1: with a word. The only thing I could think of
- 22:33Speaker 1: is from moving from Illinois to here is uh, Yanni
- 22:37Speaker 1: actually stole mine. I was gonna go green. You were
- 22:39Speaker 1: gonna roll with green. Yeah, I was thinking green because
- 22:42Speaker 1: that's what I thought of when I came here. You know,
- 22:44Speaker 1: Illinois a prairie state. We got trees, but they're in
- 22:46Speaker 1: the city. And uh so, I guess the only thing
- 22:49Speaker 1: I can think of destruct me from coming here as
- 22:51Speaker 1: a kid is just water, like all the different kind
- 22:54Speaker 1: you got waterfalls, great lakes, little lakes, swampy lakes, duck ponds,
- 22:58Speaker 1: every just water, frozen water, lots of hard water. Yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 1: hard water. Yeah, that's all I can come up with.
- 23:07Speaker 1: My mind was the is the adjective form of water
- 23:11Speaker 1: watery water? Nice going Illinois brother better than the reason
- 23:21Speaker 1: I even asked that question is the uh. I was
- 23:25Speaker 1: talking to the writer Ian Frasier one time and he like,
- 23:29Speaker 1: really he's from Ohio, but really like to talk about
- 23:32Speaker 1: me being from Michigan. And he said, one day we
- 23:36Speaker 1: were talking about Michigan, and he said, you know, when
- 23:38Speaker 1: I think of Michigan, I always sick of people that
- 23:41Speaker 1: I met on the boss who would say fuckers honorable.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I've ever been like, that's true that I thought that
- 23:54Speaker 1: was being on a bus elementary school. But that is
- 23:59Speaker 1: how we say that. Up. I just said it. So
- 24:09Speaker 1: that's six in my head. I can't get it out
- 24:11Speaker 1: of my head. Um okay, now another Michigan thing real quick. Um.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You could pick, and I gotta warn you about this.
- 24:21Speaker 1: You can pick your favorite Uncle Ted or Uncle Bob's song,
- 24:26Speaker 1: but you'll get one of each. You can do one
- 24:28Speaker 1: of each, but I think it'd be too long because
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'd be like twelve tunes. I think you should go one.
- 24:32Speaker 1: It could be either Uncle Bobby or Uncle Teddy. I
- 24:37Speaker 1: tried to talk Matt and to bring in his guitar
- 24:40Speaker 1: to play a little bit of every favorite song and
- 24:42Speaker 1: the seeker ones. You'd be all over some of them.
- 24:46Speaker 1: But he was intimidated. He was intimidated by certain other
- 24:49Speaker 1: tunes that you were like, are too complex. Yea, So
- 24:52Speaker 1: he did not bring the guitar. I can't, I can't shred.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Can you do like a like if someone says the
- 24:59Speaker 1: song you able to like helmet? Yeah, something like that. Yeah. So,
- 25:09Speaker 1: because because these are like things I think, like foundational
- 25:11Speaker 1: Michigan music. And I know there's newer versions, but I'm
- 25:14Speaker 1: just dating myself here, but this was old music when
- 25:17Speaker 1: I was a kid. Uncle Bobby, you know, picture yourself,
- 25:22Speaker 1: Marty raising your hand. Yeah, I call I call it
- 25:25Speaker 1: nugent song because I don't. I don't think I could
- 25:27Speaker 1: name a singer song. Dude, Come on, this guy, Mark
- 25:34Speaker 1: Kenyon is the only man I've ever met in my
- 25:38Speaker 1: life who identifies can I do it to you? Like
- 25:44Speaker 1: it's almost like the name that shall not be spoken.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about. Musicians Mexico. With
- 25:51Speaker 1: a long conversation, Mark like, actually, if you ask Mark
- 25:56Speaker 1: Mark likes. It's like they're like the fans each trying
- 26:00Speaker 1: to say he's not like my favorite, but Billy Joel
- 26:07Speaker 1: is pretty good. He also didn't see Jeremiah Jensen. Uh yeah, finally,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I'm less shocked that he can't name a nugent song.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I got nugent. Oh, I think said Night Moves, No
- 26:25Speaker 1: Flow me Away my favorite news song. My favorite song
- 26:31Speaker 1: is the clichest song you could possibly think of for
- 26:34Speaker 1: this event. But it was on a CD that I
- 26:36Speaker 1: listened to every morning when heading to go hunting. So
- 26:39Speaker 1: on my Deer Hunting soundtrack, first track got me pumped
- 26:43Speaker 1: up every more and hand out see iconic fred Bear. Yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 1: oh that that counts. That counts, you can. I think
- 26:52Speaker 1: I can only name one of each, Like I'm just
- 26:54Speaker 1: not good at this game. I've never been good at
- 26:56Speaker 1: this game. But yeah, it would be Night Moves, Night Moves,
- 27:00Speaker 1: and I like it more now since you explained. I
- 27:04Speaker 1: used to just sing along, never really thought about words
- 27:06Speaker 1: and songs, sing along and dance a little bit, enjoying
- 27:11Speaker 1: myself feel good. But when you explained what that song means,
- 27:15Speaker 1: like it changed it. You know what actually is happening
- 27:17Speaker 1: in this Yeah, that one. Yeah, I would like that.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Can you explain it? Maybe just want one verse everything.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I'd love to hear it. Yeah, it's about senescence. It's
- 27:28Speaker 1: like growing old and fade out. Woke last night the
- 27:31Speaker 1: sound of Thunder. They're like it strikes a man deep.
- 27:34Speaker 1: When you started listening to it, real heavy, how far off?
- 27:39Speaker 1: I said, and wondered, you could read it like a
- 27:41Speaker 1: Bob Service poem you got when you want to rip
- 27:45Speaker 1: out um, Like, I feel like I should go with
- 27:48Speaker 1: roll me Away because like motorcycles. But but I have
- 27:51Speaker 1: to go with um. The live version of travel Man
- 27:55Speaker 1: and the Brief Loser. Yeah, that's when when it kicks
- 27:59Speaker 1: at the uful Loser in the middle of that. That's
- 28:02Speaker 1: pretty good man. And then I do have a Ted.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I do a Ted song great Buffalo really yeah, that's
- 28:09Speaker 1: a good one. Yes, the B side too, You're not
- 28:16Speaker 1: like a big music but that was like, oh yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 1: the live version was the I'm not I never have,
- 28:21Speaker 1: but I have continually bought Bob Seeker c ds of
- 28:25Speaker 1: the greatest It's a Bob Seeger for the last twenty years,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and when they burned up, I throw them out. So
- 28:30Speaker 1: my daughter you can't he plays it that fast. I'm
- 28:35Speaker 1: on the road a lot, and I have instructions to
- 28:40Speaker 1: my daughter Jesse. At my funeral it will be accompaniment.
- 28:44Speaker 1: You will accompany me. That's I will cry if I
- 28:47Speaker 1: start doing the lyrics to that. Do it and do it.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It makes me. It makes me weep. Also with the
- 29:00Speaker 1: seeker theme, but mine probably would probably be a refugee.
- 29:05Speaker 1: That's Uncle Tom, which is not from here. But you
- 29:09Speaker 1: got you gotta admit that's a pretty good song. I
- 29:14Speaker 1: heard it. I heard it yesterday. Um, but really, i'd say, uh,
- 29:20Speaker 1: I can't pick just one. I have to go to
- 29:23Speaker 1: um and and one is as sweet as the other,
- 29:27Speaker 1: as savage, I'd say, in the sweet end its main
- 29:30Speaker 1: Street and then on the savage end, it's her strut.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Both those songs are are about you know, there's only
- 29:41Speaker 1: two songs I know of in this whole catalog that
- 29:43Speaker 1: are about how you say adult dancing? Yes, but you
- 29:50Speaker 1: this is a debate. I don't know if you remember this.
- 29:52Speaker 1: We used had. We had a like big debate about
- 29:56Speaker 1: what strut is about? Right right? In struct Uncle Bobby says, um,
- 30:03Speaker 1: I do respect her, I do respect her, but I
- 30:08Speaker 1: loved to watch her struct. That's what he says. Matt
- 30:12Speaker 1: used to say, no, no, no, He's saying, I do
- 30:14Speaker 1: respect her, but I love to see I love to
- 30:20Speaker 1: watch her strut. And we would argue about that endlessly.
- 30:25Speaker 1: And I hope that now you've given up it does
- 30:29Speaker 1: see a little little silly and retrospect. The problem with
- 30:32Speaker 1: all that stuff is like, oh, it's just like you
- 30:36Speaker 1: come back here, you hear so much classic rock and montana.
- 30:39Speaker 1: You don't hear nearly as much. It's hard to keep
- 30:40Speaker 1: up on it. But that stuff is so good, but
- 30:46Speaker 1: it just gets so old, you know. I mean, after
- 30:51Speaker 1: a lifetime of listening to it. If I wish I don't,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I wish I had like rock and roll dementia where
- 31:00Speaker 1: I could be gone and I could discover the new.
- 31:05Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, that'd be good, because I was my
- 31:09Speaker 1: mind has been taken. Like with friends that you haven't
- 31:12Speaker 1: seen in five years, you'd stick get in your car
- 31:14Speaker 1: and you'd be like, he had that album in five
- 31:18Speaker 1: years ago. When I got in this car, Yeah, I'm
- 31:23Speaker 1: gonna my mind's already been taken. But definitely, uh, definitely
- 31:26Speaker 1: the older I get like the Night Moves thing, because
- 31:30Speaker 1: now that I'm like practically dead half way. It's especially meaningful.
- 31:35Speaker 1: But remember we had a conversation about Hollywood Knights when
- 31:38Speaker 1: you're driving. Yeah, like that's a good driving song. Makes
- 31:41Speaker 1: you want to drive faster than you should. Okay, so
- 31:45Speaker 1: that's your Michigan tune. If you had to do and
- 31:48Speaker 1: and Mark Kenny, I'm barring you from doing what I
- 31:52Speaker 1: think you're gonna do one Michigan hunting and fishing activity.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You have to pick one thing, one hunting fishing thing
- 32:03Speaker 1: in Michigan, and that's the only one you can engage
- 32:05Speaker 1: in and don't worry about like factoring out how many
- 32:09Speaker 1: days you can participate in it for a year. But
- 32:11Speaker 1: like the thing that is best to you. But you're
- 32:15Speaker 1: borrowing me from saying what I think you're going to say.
- 32:18Speaker 1: So I can't say dear him. You can't do that. Uh?
- 32:22Speaker 1: Is that for you in a really bad position? No, okay,
- 32:25Speaker 1: you can say it. Easy answer other than dear would
- 32:27Speaker 1: be turkey hunting Turkey young, send me get me after
- 32:31Speaker 1: the Gallerys Michigan Turks. Yeah, I probably had to go
- 32:41Speaker 1: turks to man. Yeah. No, I love my Squirreld but
- 32:48Speaker 1: really all but you really love squirrels. I really, I
- 32:52Speaker 1: really love squirrels, man, but those those turkeys. Man. Like,
- 32:56Speaker 1: somebody asked us recently about, like, which animals most challenge
- 33:00Speaker 1: jing or what do you love about hunting so much?
- 33:02Speaker 1: I answered because I love the challenge. And I feel
- 33:05Speaker 1: like I was um, I wasn't clear enough, and people
- 33:09Speaker 1: mistook I was saying that I love that just the
- 33:11Speaker 1: physical challenge of it so much. But turkey hunting really
- 33:14Speaker 1: a lot of times it's not that physical, right like,
- 33:16Speaker 1: and and that's one thing I love about it for
- 33:18Speaker 1: looking at the future is when I'm an old man,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I can probably still be hunting turkeys, but the turkey
- 33:24Speaker 1: just consistently humbles me, and that's really nice to have
- 33:28Speaker 1: in the species. Squirrels have been doing that to me
- 33:31Speaker 1: lately as well, but I feel like they might have
- 33:33Speaker 1: a time where I won't be humbled by the squirrel anymore.
- 33:37Speaker 1: But like turkeys. The thing, you know, I love to
- 33:40Speaker 1: hunt turkeys, and they do humble you. But sometimes I
- 33:43Speaker 1: wonder if turkeys are hard because they get smart or
- 33:50Speaker 1: is it because there they're so unsmart that they become
- 33:54Speaker 1: completely unpredictable, right, Because if you really review it in
- 34:02Speaker 1: your mind, there could be two things going on. One
- 34:04Speaker 1: would be that he's cag Two it's just he's completely irrational.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It's probably a little bit of both. And you you
- 34:13Speaker 1: you mistake his irrational character because you'd be like, well, why,
- 34:18Speaker 1: like I'm making like these enticing sounds, you should want
- 34:20Speaker 1: to come over here to make love to this hand
- 34:22Speaker 1: turkey that I'm mimicking. But he's just so whacked out
- 34:27Speaker 1: there doesn't even occur to him to come do it.
- 34:30Speaker 1: If I could solve that, then that maybe would go
- 34:32Speaker 1: with it. But I have a different one that I'm
- 34:34Speaker 1: gonna go with. But it doesn't matter because the chess
- 34:37Speaker 1: game is only in my head. He's not really playing
- 34:40Speaker 1: against me, right, he doesn't know? Good point? Did you
- 34:46Speaker 1: did you we talked about four? Did you see the
- 34:48Speaker 1: thing the guy did where I was saying, if you
- 34:50Speaker 1: set up on a like, if you set up on
- 34:52Speaker 1: a roost tree a hundred yards away from the roost tree,
- 34:56Speaker 1: what are the odds of the turkeys calculator? Thirteen percent
- 35:01Speaker 1: of the time he'll walk within shotgun range of you,
- 35:05Speaker 1: which is kind of about right. Like just randomly select
- 35:09Speaker 1: the position in a in a circle around a rose
- 35:11Speaker 1: tree and there's a thirteen percent chance he'll pass it
- 35:13Speaker 1: in forty yards of one side of you or the other.
- 35:16Speaker 1: And I feel like that's about I mean, I still
- 35:19Speaker 1: love what you're saying. Man, I'm that dogging on turkey hunting,
- 35:24Speaker 1: like I want to say deer hunting too, but I
- 35:27Speaker 1: think that I feel like like that's kind of like
- 35:29Speaker 1: it's kind of goes yea from that. But I also
- 35:34Speaker 1: like I also like honestly like bouncing around in a
- 35:36Speaker 1: boat like bottom fishing, like wondering what you're gonna get
- 35:39Speaker 1: out there, like just like pan fish basket, like just
- 35:42Speaker 1: an unknown lake, like not knowing what's gonna happen. Like
- 35:47Speaker 1: I like that drop bait down to the bombom like
- 35:50Speaker 1: just like seeing what you're gonna get, because like if
- 35:52Speaker 1: your turkey hunting, you're like going to get a turkey,
- 35:55Speaker 1: which is great. Yeah, I love that, But I also
- 35:57Speaker 1: like going out through like kind of the unknown, like
- 35:58Speaker 1: what am I gonna get today? Like I like that idea,
- 36:01Speaker 1: like you're asking a little questions in the lake. Oh
- 36:07Speaker 1: well I can't really. I'd you know, i'd be hunting
- 36:10Speaker 1: grouse and have to hunt grouse. That'd be the one,
- 36:13Speaker 1: the one thing that um, if I couldn't travel anymore,
- 36:17Speaker 1: I could always count on Michigan for having a handful
- 36:19Speaker 1: of growse to chase. What are what are grouse numbers
- 36:23Speaker 1: in Michigan doing right now? Well, I heard a guys
- 36:25Speaker 1: say recently they do best in the years that end
- 36:27Speaker 1: in nine and zero, So that would be this fall
- 36:32Speaker 1: and following fall from here. So it's good right now,
- 36:35Speaker 1: it should be coming up. Yeah, we're hoping. So there's
- 36:38Speaker 1: no like long term trouble because like Indiana, like a
- 36:41Speaker 1: state endangered birden Yeah, Indiana is gonna listed is endangered.
- 36:45Speaker 1: It's not gonna affect us any but it's gonna be
- 36:47Speaker 1: listed in danger. There. No, it's it's dry. It's still
- 36:50Speaker 1: dropping off precipitously in every state. Like our grouse numbers
- 36:56Speaker 1: will never take what we took years ago, just because
- 36:58Speaker 1: changing timber practices. I think mostly, I think you know,
- 37:01Speaker 1: habitats like everything, habitats, habitats like location, location to buy
- 37:05Speaker 1: a house. It's always habitat. But you know, luckily we
- 37:09Speaker 1: do a little bit of timbering, you know, not enough,
- 37:12Speaker 1: but we do a little bit of timbering. But I mean,
- 37:14Speaker 1: you can find grouse even if it's not a clear
- 37:17Speaker 1: cut you can find grouse, and that's the one thing
- 37:19Speaker 1: I couldn't live without. I'd have to have that. Yeah. Oh,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I don't like this removing the sidebar of like taking
- 37:26Speaker 1: it out of the season like season like it. Oh
- 37:33Speaker 1: I had these guys are here shooting chicks and June
- 37:35Speaker 1: or something. Oh No, what I meant was What I
- 37:38Speaker 1: meant was you could like I'm trying to free you
- 37:41Speaker 1: from feeling like you need to pick a thing just
- 37:43Speaker 1: because you can do it for long, for many days,
- 37:48Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Yeah, Yeah, I'm gonna I'm
- 37:50Speaker 1: gonna stay with even though that's the case. I'm gonna
- 37:52Speaker 1: stay with perch fishing yellow perch because well, I guess
- 37:58Speaker 1: two reasons yellow for today I did. Um, there's just
- 38:02Speaker 1: so much opportunity. They're they're so good to eat, And
- 38:07Speaker 1: I just like the how egalitarian it is. You know,
- 38:11Speaker 1: you don't need permission. There's so many you know, it's
- 38:15Speaker 1: like every man's fish. Yeah, I'm with you. When I
- 38:20Speaker 1: was thinking about this guy, I think about a lot. Uh.
- 38:24Speaker 1: The thing I like most was something we only we
- 38:26Speaker 1: didn't do that many times. And I think that you
- 38:28Speaker 1: Matt Droles. You and our brother Danny pioneered it, which
- 38:32Speaker 1: was where Pendles Creek flows out into Pendle's Bay on
- 38:41Speaker 1: which is kind of like Whitefish Bay, right, yeah, Lake Superior,
- 38:45Speaker 1: and you guys this is in the mid nineties. Yeah,
- 38:48Speaker 1: it would have been nineties six. Yeah, you guys figured
- 38:51Speaker 1: out that you could go down there in the spring
- 38:54Speaker 1: those fall too though, both taking spawn sax with little
- 38:59Speaker 1: bits of foaming him, yeah, and hucking him out and
- 39:03Speaker 1: catching little dinker steel head. Yeah. We said, yeah, yeah,
- 39:06Speaker 1: it was amazing rise and just like just sitting back
- 39:10Speaker 1: and wait him to go off. Surf ye surf fishing
- 39:12Speaker 1: Lake Superior. And one time we caught a beaver by
- 39:16Speaker 1: the tail. I grab that. You know. That was back
- 39:20Speaker 1: when we would do something called we would call worrying
- 39:23Speaker 1: wildlife where you were just now and then detain a
- 39:26Speaker 1: beaver just for the story. We would send him along
- 39:32Speaker 1: his way after after worrying him. But you know, there's
- 39:35Speaker 1: a picture I have there's a picture I have from
- 39:38Speaker 1: fishing Pendals Bay, like surfcasting Pendal's Bay, and we were
- 39:43Speaker 1: down there, I think it was it was real winded.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I think we got done fishing and everybody was drinking
- 39:48Speaker 1: Boone's Farm wine. And what stuck out, like what sticks
- 39:53Speaker 1: out about the picture and what sticks out about that
- 39:55Speaker 1: little brief kind of moment when we did that a
- 39:58Speaker 1: lot was that, remember it was enf It was a
- 40:00Speaker 1: handful of times of friends mine. It was like, I
- 40:03Speaker 1: guess I was hit the age where you're like when
- 40:07Speaker 1: you're when you're really young, you got friends, but you
- 40:09Speaker 1: don't think about them. That's when you call your body fuckers,
- 40:12Speaker 1: you know, right, and like that's how you are with
- 40:15Speaker 1: your friends, you know. It's like costs that friendship much.
- 40:17Speaker 1: It's just there. It's just you just taking for grants.
- 40:19Speaker 1: It's the guy you accuse of masturbating. It's like you
- 40:22Speaker 1: have your friends, you accuse him of masturbating, you give
- 40:26Speaker 1: him the finger when you see him, and he's just
- 40:30Speaker 1: your main friend, you know, and you know that you're
- 40:35Speaker 1: like thinking, you know, like dog Dura says, You're like, no,
- 40:37Speaker 1: it's not a dog, right, So you're just together. But
- 40:40Speaker 1: then like at that this Pendle's Bay Day and I'm
- 40:43Speaker 1: thinking of was one of the first moments when I
- 40:46Speaker 1: whatever hit an age where I was like, my god,
- 40:48Speaker 1: do I like my friends? You know, and like away
- 40:51Speaker 1: and I have this picture from that day and look
- 40:52Speaker 1: at the pictures like this realization that you know, you
- 40:57Speaker 1: do like these people, they're not just people to flip
- 41:01Speaker 1: off or whatever. One you see him and it was
- 41:02Speaker 1: like this kind of like cherished moment. Now always to
- 41:04Speaker 1: have this thing and I look at it and it's
- 41:05Speaker 1: always anchored in time because we would drink a lot
- 41:08Speaker 1: of Boone's back then. I remember we were fishing Pendals
- 41:12Speaker 1: Lake one time. That's so cold that our boons froze.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I was, I was in it rolls up as a syrup, yeah,
- 41:20Speaker 1: and then we would just do shots of the syrup
- 41:22Speaker 1: that came up out of the top of your So
- 41:26Speaker 1: my daughter. I took my daughter ice fishing other day,
- 41:29Speaker 1: which well, actually she asked me to go ice fishing,
- 41:31Speaker 1: which is great, but then I found out later she
- 41:33Speaker 1: was doing it because she wanted to get out of
- 41:34Speaker 1: a babysitting gig that I didn't know she was asked
- 41:36Speaker 1: to do. And she's like, my dad's gonna take me
- 41:37Speaker 1: ice fishing, and then she asked me to ice fishing,
- 41:39Speaker 1: so that was like the whole stick. But then we
- 41:42Speaker 1: were on the ice and she was like, you've been
- 41:43Speaker 1: out ice fishing for a whole day. And I was
- 41:45Speaker 1: like thinking about one of those pendal strips, like, oh yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 1: Like Steve and I used to go out and like, man, damn,
- 41:49Speaker 1: we go out all day long, cook out the ice,
- 41:52Speaker 1: like left the Boone's farm part out, but like and
- 41:59Speaker 1: she had She's like she was very like that would
- 42:02Speaker 1: be fun. I'm like and I was kind of like
- 42:04Speaker 1: just when you said, I was thinking like yeah, and
- 42:05Speaker 1: that was Those are good times, man, those are good friends,
- 42:08Speaker 1: like just like all day long on that lake. You
- 42:11Speaker 1: somehow I don't recognize that when it's happening. It was
- 42:14Speaker 1: fun as times, man. Okay, moving on to cross bows.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Uh why Like cross bows are super controversial all of
- 42:22Speaker 1: a sudden. Man, I'm gonna be the guy here that's
- 42:24Speaker 1: an opponent of cross bows like them. I'm going out
- 42:28Speaker 1: so with my daughter and like with the there's a
- 42:30Speaker 1: youth hunt that takes place earlier in the season and
- 42:33Speaker 1: on public land. You can't use a rifle. This is
- 42:35Speaker 1: this is all correct, right, I'm saying this correct. And
- 42:39Speaker 1: so be northern like Grand Travers like Travis County, like
- 42:42Speaker 1: you can't use a a youth can't use a rifle
- 42:44Speaker 1: in public land during that early season hunt. I've never
- 42:48Speaker 1: been up there for that. I'll buy that. That's right,
- 42:52Speaker 1: doesn't that sound right? So anyhow, so it was time
- 42:56Speaker 1: for me to get a new bowl. And she was
- 42:58Speaker 1: like eight or eight ish, and so I was starting
- 43:00Speaker 1: to take her hunting. I was so was kind of
- 43:01Speaker 1: true figuring like what could I like, what could I like,
- 43:04Speaker 1: I can invest in the new bowl for me? You know,
- 43:06Speaker 1: I could buy this like cross bow that she I
- 43:08Speaker 1: can both use. It's like universe And she was into hunting,
- 43:12Speaker 1: but she was like she was still nervous about like
- 43:14Speaker 1: gun shots, and it's kind of like a like a
- 43:16Speaker 1: like a gateway drug into that. I guess, like this
- 43:18Speaker 1: cross bow, I'm with you. And she loved it and
- 43:22Speaker 1: like I kind of bought it. I was like for her,
- 43:24Speaker 1: But now I use it. It's great, Like I love it.
- 43:27Speaker 1: And you know, there's always talks about like you take
- 43:30Speaker 1: these like fire shots, and it's it's you know, it
- 43:33Speaker 1: may just be how I view it. And now high
- 43:35Speaker 1: high hunt, but I haven't taken a shot with that
- 43:37Speaker 1: thing that I would not have taken with a bow,
- 43:39Speaker 1: Like I don't like, you know, it's it's you shoot it.
- 43:43Speaker 1: You can see that bolt still moving, so it's not
- 43:45Speaker 1: like it's rifle, you know, quality of like taking an
- 43:49Speaker 1: eight yr shot. You know, if you shoot a bow,
- 43:52Speaker 1: you know, you know you get let's do that that
- 43:54Speaker 1: jumped the string or whatever, and like you know, move quickly,
- 43:56Speaker 1: So you always got that in mind. So any like
- 43:58Speaker 1: fire shot, like I always had that in mind. So
- 44:00Speaker 1: I just make sure it's like a normal bow shot
- 44:02Speaker 1: and take it with that that crossbow and you're having success. Yeah,
- 44:08Speaker 1: you've a shot one mark. I have shot crossbows, never
- 44:11Speaker 1: had an animal, but my dad used a crossbow, Grandpa
- 44:15Speaker 1: used one back in the day. I don't have a
- 44:18Speaker 1: problem with him. I understand why some people see there
- 44:22Speaker 1: being ethical questions around long shots, or why some people
- 44:26Speaker 1: don't like the idea of a bunch of people describbing
- 44:28Speaker 1: a crossbow and heading out during their cherished archery season.
- 44:31Speaker 1: But who's I mean, who's drawing these lines and what's
- 44:33Speaker 1: okay what's not. You could have a traditional archers say well,
- 44:36Speaker 1: you shouldn't be taking your crossbow, but I think it's
- 44:38Speaker 1: also like you put a lot of stock in and
- 44:40Speaker 1: just like hunting is so much more than like that
- 44:42Speaker 1: that piece of equipment that you use. I think you know,
- 44:45Speaker 1: so you put all those like stocking like hunting is
- 44:47Speaker 1: just like if you're using a bow or crossbow, that
- 44:50Speaker 1: that makes your breaks whether or not you're like an
- 44:52Speaker 1: ethical hunter or like enjoying the hunt. When you just
- 44:54Speaker 1: talking about like you know, like the like the numbers
- 44:57Speaker 1: of bow hunters are declining like that, it's probably not
- 45:00Speaker 1: good for hunting. And and that's my yes, sir, I
- 45:03Speaker 1: don't say the biggest reason why I'm okay with crossbows
- 45:07Speaker 1: is simply because of that trend. Anything that's going to
- 45:09Speaker 1: help people stick around in the hunting participating population longer,
- 45:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna be okay with. And that's something that a
- 45:15Speaker 1: is easier for new hunters pick up. So if we
- 45:18Speaker 1: want to make it easier for new folks to get
- 45:20Speaker 1: into deer hunting and try archery hunting, it's a whole
- 45:23Speaker 1: heck of a lot easier for someone who maybe is
- 45:25Speaker 1: interested in eating local food, some guy who's twenty five
- 45:29Speaker 1: and is intrigued by the food aspect of it. It's
- 45:32Speaker 1: gonna be really hard to get that person right at
- 45:33Speaker 1: the gate shooting a vertical bowl, but give him a crossbow.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Shame for kids like I bought it for my daughter,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and I think that's a good like kind of entry
- 45:42Speaker 1: level like piece of equipment for you know, you know
- 45:45Speaker 1: if she if she pursues it more than then we
- 45:47Speaker 1: will buy you know, a decent bowl. But like there's
- 45:49Speaker 1: kind of like a way to get her to stay
- 45:51Speaker 1: out in the words with me and like kind of
- 45:53Speaker 1: be engaged in her own and she can use it.
- 45:55Speaker 1: So yeah, I think I didn't know how I felt
- 45:59Speaker 1: about when the first unseen and then I you know,
- 46:01Speaker 1: thought about it in boss this and I'm happy with it.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I think it's a good, good, good thing. Like I advocate,
- 46:06Speaker 1: Like if there's someone who got into hunting picked up
- 46:08Speaker 1: a crossbow and that's what they started with and they
- 46:11Speaker 1: liked it, I would tell that person, just from my
- 46:13Speaker 1: own personal experiences, if you like that, you would really
- 46:16Speaker 1: love trying a time like there's a it's a it's
- 46:19Speaker 1: another level, it's a different experience. It requires another totally
- 46:22Speaker 1: different level of time and energy and expertise, but it
- 46:26Speaker 1: makes that experience a little bit different, a little bit
- 46:28Speaker 1: more intimate in some way. What if instead they say
- 46:32Speaker 1: this was great, but now have you seen these things
- 46:34Speaker 1: that shoot the bolts out of what looks like a
- 46:37Speaker 1: rifle ball guns. Yeah, what did they say? You know what?
- 46:47Speaker 1: This thing just shoots the arrow too right guarded as
- 46:52Speaker 1: a gun or a boat. We haven't decided yet. I mean,
- 46:58Speaker 1: can I use this during archery season? I understand there's
- 47:03Speaker 1: gotta be a long a line drawn somewhere, and I
- 47:05Speaker 1: agree that's that's a tough question answer. You know. It's
- 47:10Speaker 1: interesting is that, for whatever reason, when I look at that,
- 47:13Speaker 1: my guts like, oh no, that should not be used.
- 47:15Speaker 1: But then when you start thinking about why, why, where's
- 47:19Speaker 1: the Maybe there's some mechanical thing within that the then
- 47:22Speaker 1: you we can point to say if it has this
- 47:24Speaker 1: mechanism that propels the bowl to the eraw, then it
- 47:26Speaker 1: can qualify as archery. But if it's compressed gas or
- 47:30Speaker 1: something like that, I don't know. Um. You know, our
- 47:33Speaker 1: dad was involved because he started bowl hunting very early,
- 47:37Speaker 1: and he was involved with groups that were early on
- 47:40Speaker 1: petitioning states to create archery seasons, which at the time
- 47:45Speaker 1: was very controversial for many of the same reasons that
- 47:49Speaker 1: people point to controversies around cross balls. People didn't want
- 47:52Speaker 1: to have archery seasons because I was gonna destroy deer hunting.
- 47:55Speaker 1: I don't know. But then so he was involved in
- 47:57Speaker 1: that in the fifty's and then was vehemently opposed to
- 48:04Speaker 1: crossbows for the same set of reasons that he battled against,
- 48:13Speaker 1: you know, to to try to bring in archery seasons.
- 48:15Speaker 1: I don't. I've never I've never shot once, so I
- 48:17Speaker 1: don't really have This is just something I'm trying to
- 48:19Speaker 1: look at and figure out. I had a guy, right,
- 48:21Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, you know, efficacy rates don't really
- 48:23Speaker 1: go up with crossbows, but it's only because inexperienced hunters
- 48:27Speaker 1: use them. He's if the real hard hitters, if the
- 48:31Speaker 1: real hard hitters were using them, it'd be like game
- 48:34Speaker 1: over from his perspective, like the real lifelong hard hitters
- 48:39Speaker 1: switch to that would be like they'd be exceptionally deadly.
- 48:42Speaker 1: So I don't know the instincts, Matt. I don't know.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I don't I don't have an ethical position on it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: My own state were I hunt, and I'm very selfish
- 48:55Speaker 1: about like I like there to be a few people
- 48:59Speaker 1: as few people in areas as possible. I would I
- 49:03Speaker 1: would completely selfishly hope they don't have crossbows because it
- 49:08Speaker 1: seems like it would turn into more people being do
- 49:12Speaker 1: you think more people like, do you think people that
- 49:14Speaker 1: didn't hunt Austin started hunting because crossbows came on the scene.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Absolutely you think, so, I'm or rifle hunters. I could.
- 49:22Speaker 1: That's what it comes to mind me, is that a
- 49:24Speaker 1: rifle hunter be like, oh no, I can hunt with
- 49:27Speaker 1: this thing. And I think the whole question comes down
- 49:30Speaker 1: to which way do you look at things? Do you
- 49:31Speaker 1: look at that from the perspective of do you want
- 49:34Speaker 1: more hunters or do you want fewer hunters? Do you
- 49:36Speaker 1: want fewer hunters because it's going to lead to a
- 49:38Speaker 1: better experience for you personally, then you probably want to
- 49:40Speaker 1: crossbows if you are less concerned about your specific way
- 49:44Speaker 1: of experiencing the wild and what your hunt is gonna
- 49:46Speaker 1: be like, and you are thinking more about what are
- 49:49Speaker 1: things gonna be like twenty years from now my son's
- 49:51Speaker 1: hunting than that person I think supports crossbows. I'm on
- 49:57Speaker 1: board until Matt loses the opportunity. Once Matt opportune, I say, okay,
- 50:04Speaker 1: I'm ready to move on. I want to talk about
- 50:07Speaker 1: emotional support dogs. It's it's a good How many dogs
- 50:15Speaker 1: do you own currently? Five? Do you have any of
- 50:18Speaker 1: them registered as an emotional support dog or even registered
- 50:22Speaker 1: as one, like do you have an emotional support dog? So?
- 50:25Speaker 1: How it? Like, Matt, can you we haven't really talked
- 50:28Speaker 1: about this, you have one? I have an emotional support
- 50:31Speaker 1: course break down for me? Are you at liberty to
- 50:35Speaker 1: talk about it? Sure? Okay, as long as the airlines
- 50:39Speaker 1: some representatives, I'd like to I'd like to entertain you.
- 50:46Speaker 1: I want you to talk and I don't want to
- 50:47Speaker 1: get yourself trouping from the perspective of some of an
- 50:49Speaker 1: emotional support dog. Yeah, well, because how is it? Okay?
- 50:53Speaker 1: Go ahead, no fish your question? Okay? Is it just
- 50:59Speaker 1: that you don't want to be inconvenienced, so therefore you
- 51:04Speaker 1: have an emotional support dog? Or do like? Just to
- 51:08Speaker 1: speak for your community? Is it that you guys are
- 51:12Speaker 1: like all you mean I could do this and then
- 51:15Speaker 1: just bring my dog everywhere? Is that? Or is it I? Emotionally,
- 51:20Speaker 1: I guess it's like, um, I enjoyed being with my dog,
- 51:26Speaker 1: so like I like my dog to be with me,
- 51:30Speaker 1: and I just so happened to like I I have
- 51:35Speaker 1: struggled with depression in my whole life, so I'm on antidepressants,
- 51:39Speaker 1: which makes me eligible to get the dog. To have
- 51:44Speaker 1: Shifty be an emotional support dog. Is it more emotional
- 51:48Speaker 1: for you to be with? Is it more emotional for
- 51:49Speaker 1: me with alpha dogs? So it's really the only reason
- 51:53Speaker 1: I registered. I I saved a few hundred bucks on
- 51:57Speaker 1: airline tickets. But it's totally legit, right, And because she's
- 52:06Speaker 1: an emotional support dog, I'm allowed to like have her
- 52:11Speaker 1: on a leash next to me on the plane outside
- 52:14Speaker 1: of a kennel. But I don't want people. I want
- 52:16Speaker 1: people to think I'm paying to take her, so I
- 52:19Speaker 1: put her in a kennel so they don't think them
- 52:22Speaker 1: they don't, they don't know him crazy. I gotta, I gotta.
- 52:27Speaker 1: I want to put the comparison to this because I
- 52:29Speaker 1: know people who have done this. Getting an emotional support
- 52:33Speaker 1: dog permit is like getting America a medical marijuana slip
- 52:37Speaker 1: from your doctor. The same as you say, I got
- 52:40Speaker 1: a headache, okay, here you can buy marijuana. That was
- 52:44Speaker 1: my doctor wanted a few days to think about it. Doctor,
- 52:55Speaker 1: So you don't, but you don't use it for because
- 52:57Speaker 1: like with bird dogs, to be great, right, I could
- 53:00Speaker 1: fly to Alaska with one and go ahead, Termagan if
- 53:02Speaker 1: I could tell him I was you know, I needed
- 53:05Speaker 1: a dog for emotional support, that'd be great. But you
- 53:07Speaker 1: haven't done it. I never even thought about it. But
- 53:10Speaker 1: I know people have done it. I know people who
- 53:11Speaker 1: have done it with a full sized dog, and they
- 53:14Speaker 1: were afraid that we're gonna get caught because, like you said,
- 53:17Speaker 1: you don't want to say too much, because part of
- 53:20Speaker 1: it's for convenience. You know you you love that dog.
- 53:23Speaker 1: You don't want to leave it. I don't think can
- 53:27Speaker 1: emotional sup four dogs be any size or do they
- 53:30Speaker 1: have to be any breath doesn't matter, could be a
- 53:33Speaker 1: master for quirky, It doesn't matter if change your gears
- 53:38Speaker 1: a little bit, if you this is so I think
- 53:41Speaker 1: that I get I get nostalgic in Michigan. What's the
- 53:45Speaker 1: thing from growing up that if you when you tell
- 53:50Speaker 1: someone about it, now, what what part of like some
- 53:57Speaker 1: belief system or thing that was typical or happened or
- 54:00Speaker 1: extraordinary or whatever that when you tell someone that that
- 54:04Speaker 1: happened to you when you were young, it sounds the
- 54:07Speaker 1: most fucked up? Can I leave off like from from
- 54:12Speaker 1: a hunting perspective and just whatever you want they could be.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Go ahead, and you have a clarifying question. You said
- 54:18Speaker 1: us a couple of ideas that we'd be talking about,
- 54:20Speaker 1: and I said, Steve must have put me up to
- 54:21Speaker 1: this one. You have one? Yeah, well, I mean, well
- 54:24Speaker 1: I didn't put you up to that. I sent the
- 54:26Speaker 1: idea to you. Yeah well, I mean but I thought
- 54:28Speaker 1: you you threw that one in because you know some
- 54:30Speaker 1: history about me. Oh no, because I have things I
- 54:32Speaker 1: can't tell. Okay, I have no, there's some things that
- 54:36Speaker 1: there's there's some practices that I was familiar with. I'm
- 54:40Speaker 1: talking about like in the sporting life that um now
- 54:44Speaker 1: I just have to I would talk about them with
- 54:46Speaker 1: you downstairs, say, but not up here. This is just
- 54:52Speaker 1: like growing up stuff things that you can't believe and
- 54:55Speaker 1: people nowadays. Yeah, I'll do I'll do mine, just to
- 54:58Speaker 1: set to get on talk. Okay, okay, because I got
- 55:01Speaker 1: mine ready. I tell my I told my wife this story.
- 55:04Speaker 1: I told my kids a story and they look at
- 55:06Speaker 1: me like they can't picture what I'm talking about. My
- 55:08Speaker 1: dad used to have a friend who would come over.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Uh he was. He was a drunkard named Mr Higgins.
- 55:15Speaker 1: And I remember Mr Higgins coming over our house one
- 55:18Speaker 1: time on his snowmobile in his snowsuit. But didn't have
- 55:22Speaker 1: clothes on under his snowsuit. And do you remember this? Yeah,
- 55:28Speaker 1: and he took one of our pet hamsters and put
- 55:35Speaker 1: it in his snows suit. Wasn't a gerbil? Yes, snow
- 55:38Speaker 1: a hamster put it? I think it was a hamster,
- 55:41Speaker 1: not a gerbil. I think, came back and put it
- 55:45Speaker 1: in his snowsuit and let it run around while saying
- 55:48Speaker 1: I love that little critter. And it burned it into
- 55:55Speaker 1: my mind, just Mr Higgins, how drunk he'd be, how
- 55:59Speaker 1: he'd come over on a snowmobile. And it's just like
- 56:02Speaker 1: and I probably even messed the parts of it up.
- 56:04Speaker 1: But when I tell people, I don't know why. I
- 56:06Speaker 1: was just like one of the stories that's in my repertoire.
- 56:08Speaker 1: And it's gotten to be that these people used to laugh.
- 56:11Speaker 1: And now I tell people who look at me like,
- 56:13Speaker 1: you can't be telling me this. But guy wouldn't like now,
- 56:21Speaker 1: if he were to try to do that, he would
- 56:23Speaker 1: burn up in flames or something over Like, guys don't
- 56:26Speaker 1: show up dress that way drunk on snowmobiles anymore. Right,
- 56:31Speaker 1: it's just, for whatever reason, something in the air not accepted.
- 56:39Speaker 1: So I'm gonna take liberty because you know the story.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Matt probably does, and me being the old guy here, Um,
- 56:47Speaker 1: I mean, the one thing is like this is the
- 56:50Speaker 1: greatest this is the greatest thing in the world. It's not.
- 56:53Speaker 1: It wasn't when you were growing up. But I want
- 56:55Speaker 1: to pressace it with when I was a kid. You know,
- 56:58Speaker 1: I'm sixty one years old. We literally got out of
- 57:03Speaker 1: the house in the morning and left and we lived
- 57:05Speaker 1: in the city of Chicago, in the city and just exactly,
- 57:11Speaker 1: I mean, it's just what I'm getting that is like
- 57:14Speaker 1: our parents didn't really I'm not saying they didn't care.
- 57:17Speaker 1: They just didn't worry like parents worried now. They didn't helicopter.
- 57:22Speaker 1: And then that same thread, there was a policy at
- 57:25Speaker 1: the Chicago public schools that I hadn't I was oblivious to.
- 57:28Speaker 1: In eighth grade in Chicago went first to eighth grade.
- 57:32Speaker 1: You didn't have scoth You know where I'm going, all right, So,
- 57:41Speaker 1: like you get junior high here and I don't understand
- 57:43Speaker 1: what just happened between you two. I just know the
- 57:46Speaker 1: story is I thought you knew about skipping from the
- 57:48Speaker 1: first and so I graduate eighth grade, like we didn't
- 57:52Speaker 1: have a middle school thing. So you go from this
- 57:54Speaker 1: little school with one little gymnasi hamster in your junior high.
- 58:03Speaker 1: No junior high. So you come from eighth grade and
- 58:06Speaker 1: all of a sudden, you're gonna go now with these
- 58:09Speaker 1: all these people older than you, and you're all your
- 58:11Speaker 1: friends from eighth grade. Yeah, dude with five o'clock shadows
- 58:14Speaker 1: and stuff, you know, in sophomore year and come to
- 58:19Speaker 1: find out and this is you can google this. It
- 58:22Speaker 1: is a policy, was a policy until nineteen seventy six.
- 58:26Speaker 1: I graduated in seventy five. The boys swam naked in
- 58:30Speaker 1: swim class. Now I'm not we sat Now, I'm not
- 58:42Speaker 1: trying to steal the thunder, because no one's the thunders.
- 58:47Speaker 1: The thunders you have. Matt was there and we were
- 58:54Speaker 1: all up with the fish shack in Alaska, and I'm
- 58:56Speaker 1: telling this story. You guys are rolling and Doug's not
- 59:00Speaker 1: believing me, and Danny kild the only one that had
- 59:03Speaker 1: a signal on his phone. And Danny goes, yeah, look
- 59:05Speaker 1: here boys in Chicago's swim make and I'll end it
- 59:14Speaker 1: on that. But whetting At nobody knows. You can look
- 59:19Speaker 1: it up. And they say, uh, you know the you
- 59:22Speaker 1: know the swimsuits. If they weren't well kept and they
- 59:25Speaker 1: were just dirty. I'm like, it didn't make any sense.
- 59:28Speaker 1: I could go into too many swimming stories, but I
- 59:32Speaker 1: just wanted a picture. And I know it's like it's
- 59:38Speaker 1: like Pink Floyd's the wall man. It's like they're like,
- 59:42Speaker 1: it makes no sense. It's just they're like, I want
- 59:46Speaker 1: to make sure to cause this looks psychological damage to
- 59:50Speaker 1: children as possible. Right. And the point I was good
- 59:55Speaker 1: before was our parents couldn't go to school. I didn't
- 59:58Speaker 1: even have parent teacher conferences nless you were, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the kid that was in the hallway all week. And
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: so if you become a home you say we swim naked,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: your mom gonna go like you're going outside me back
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: by dinner. It didn't seem to bother anybody that I
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: was also born October thirty, so I was like way
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: behind the maturity scale when you were eleven months behind
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: everybody else. Kept looking in the locker for swimsuits. But
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: watching everybody walking, looks like my dad gotta gotta think
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: about thinking somewhere. I think I felt like I did.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I had less on that. If you know what I'm saying,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: So like you got naked and it took more stuff off.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I was more naked, and I to this day, I
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: can't swim a lick. I go opened the boat with you.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I got the one life preserver to just kids. Wedding
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: goes anyway, So I'm really I don't know, maybe I
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: ate up too much time. It's weird, is like at
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: the same time, I thought everybody's running around those Rodney
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Dangerfield swimsuits like from that to school, like like the
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: suit that was a little before me. But yeah, man,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I had nothing, sorry, any practices that. Uh. When I
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: was a kid, I listened to Billy Joel, There's some
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: things are so embarrassing, s mart, keep it to yourself.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Parents wouldn't let that happen anymore. Was it supposed to
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: have a Michigan twist or no? From our childhood? Oh yeah,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: because he violated the Michigan rule. No, just go ahead.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: And when you tell the story now, people kind of
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: look at you like is that for real? Like you're like,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: it feels very like you're dating something like another one.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: I'll tell well, I I think I got something for you.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: It's like when I tell all you guys about Latvian
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: summer camp and went what went on there? You guys
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: all look at me like I can go on and
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: on about the activities that went on there, but it's
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: it's just like every other summer camp since it was
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Latvian summer camp experience. No, nothing like that. Like another
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: version of what I'm saying would be the remember one
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: time my dad rounding a corner and my brother, we're
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: little kids. The door swung open and he shot out
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: onto the curb. So there there's like a couple of
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: things where those safety belts, no child restraint seats, and
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: he's riding shotgun. So that's just different now, Like now
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: it's hard to pict your kids squirting out of it
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: fast cornering car. No nothing, you go, no, No, I
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: don't know if I have anything like that from mine. Yeah,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I kind of misread the question, what did you think
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: of men? I thought you were talking about like really
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: inhumane things we did as kids. Oh yeah, that's what
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I was saying. That must be okay to talk about that.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: But now that I realized that's not what you're asking,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be okay, although it does
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: in't a kid, how things work different? Yeah, are you
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: guys familiar with um mark. You correct me if I'm
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: wrong on this. If if you like, if you shoot
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: a high fenced deer, is it true like that deer
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: is non admissible into Pope and Young and Boone and
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Crockett correct, that's correct. So we got a number of
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: question record books for that kind of thing that there
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: are people keep those records, but not the fair chase
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Boone and Crocker books like sci will accept it, right, yeah,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Sei and some other things. So Boone and Crockett and
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Pope and Young will not accept like a confined dear
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: from a confined area in the record books. But we
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: got a couple of emails from guys ask an interesting
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: question where the fish world doesn't have an equivalent. So
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: some dude like, I want to get my story straight here,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: some guy in Tennessee bakes a pond, has a private pond,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: and basically builds a croppy in the pond that beats
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: the state record. Yeah, beats the state record by a pound.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: That guy should be ashamed himself. And then it's like
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: this so ridiculous, But I f g A accepts the
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: what is it? The whole idea of having a trophy
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: that you like accomplished something well, and this other guy
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: wrote and Mark might don't know about this, I don't know.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: I don't want to put it on you. But it's
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: there's there's a guy in Texas who's managing a pond
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: and his whole deal is just to grow the next
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: world record bass. And he says that this feller was
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: actually influential in the creation of food plots to grow
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: large white tails. I don't know if that's true or not.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: It was last May that the guy in Tennessee raised
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: himself up in a little pond a new world record croppy.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: So it's more about now it's like it's not about
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you're angling skill. It's like how good you are at
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: fish husbandry? Eg. Yes, but that's but this is where
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: this is where it gets like a rich subject because
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: that's what that's what people's happened. Like. There's there's there's
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: the argument that what that like white tail hunting has
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: become animal husbandry. It's become like like big time white
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: to hunting has become more akin to animal husbandry than hunting,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: which you know, there's sides to it, but this idea
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: that um that that that's infiltrating or permeating the fish
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: world and should an organization that the Tally's records, like
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the I f J is very strict, like if you
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: hook a fish and then hand the rod to me
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: and I landed, that fish is ineligible. Okay, you can't
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: gasp it all kinds of stuff, but you can basically
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: make a frank and fish. Yeah, as long as I
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: don't hand the rod to you. Right, it's the record.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: It's it's like, uh, what is the goal? I thought
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: that it seems like the goal should be like that
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: if you get a high score in one of these things,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: that that's like emblematic of some kind of an accomplishment. Yeah,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: and so it just it's two. I've always argued that
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: there should be one that's like for the score you
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: get when you shoot something where everybody else can go,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: and that would be like the one that most people
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: would aspire to have the top score at. Yeah, like
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: you you've proposed the idea, and I've talked about it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: You've proposed the like the hunt purity score is a
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: different thing, different that's that's a that's a different animal.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: But this this is about like if we're gonna have
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: some number that um quantifies a hunting achievement. It's just
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: be there should be one that's designated for fishing game
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: that was harvested where anybody can go. They have to
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: catch this like so this this fish is raised to
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: do you actually have to catch it like on a
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: hooking line to like qualify. Yeah, you know you gotta
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: then catch it you have right there. You can't net
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: it up. You gotta like catch it by certain Is
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: there any difference in that and making your property into
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: food pots and all that other stuff? I don't know.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I'm throwing so I like the fish out of the
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: pot in the backyard. Yeah. I think the bigger issue
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I had. The bigger issue is is even the idea
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: of applying or saying that the score of an animal's
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: antlers is indicative of some kind of skill that you
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: as a hunter has it all. I think that's where
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: issue is in general, that we're looking at this number
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: if it's not that well, I would say, I mean,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I'd say I'd say it's like always that, Like, why
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: else would you have a scoring system unless it's like
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: a way, it's surrogate for how long you're That's not
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: when it came up with scoring systems. When the Boone
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: and Crockett Club was started, they were keeping they were
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: trying to improve the records of Elbow to understand these
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: species back in the nineties. Well, it's it's coming along
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: the way, but no, it's important to understand that that
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: it was a way that you could It was a
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: way you could look you can look at long term
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: trends of what the landscape was capable of producing. So
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: whatever became like, there was there was a way to wait.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: It was like at a time, this sort of way
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: to tabulate and mark what what species were doing. It's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: like when somebody tells you, yes, the inches of their deer,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: they're not They're not boasting about what productive habitat they hunt.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I think the score can be valuable, is like an
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: indication of like the rarity of an animal. Like I
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: killed the deer that scored higher than the deer killed
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: the higher score deer than I ever had before this
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: past year. Does that mean I'm some kind of great
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: hunter because of it? No. The only thing I look
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: at that as, if anything, it's just simply I was
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: fortunate enough to kill a very rare dear and so
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: in my own mind that that's kind of special just
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: because of how rare that animal is out there. But
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: no way do I sign any kind of like higher
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: skill let to myself because I kill the X dear,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: and so and so killed so many lessones. Dear, But
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: you're drifting, But that's drifting for what we're talking about.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: What we're talking about, like the thing with raising a
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: fish up in a pond is it's in a completely
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: controlled environment, right, So it's not even it's not like
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: you're taking on the idea that there should there be
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: like maybe you're arguing the idea should there be? Is
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: there validity to having a system by which we score
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: things with fish? Is just weight? You know? But this
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: is sort of like if you have like our normal
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: notion of like someone catches a fish, there's a normal
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: sense of um, he got it, oh definitely, and where
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: whereas others could not. I have a question because you know,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I'm not the big game hunter in the room. Okay,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: but I gotta go to boone crocketad Okay, So if
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Buondo crocketat or Pope and young was started to to
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: see what, how, dear were healthier, bigger, bigger antlers are
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: we saying in the beginning of Boone and Crockett, there
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: was nobody's name next to who shot it. Well, then
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: I go back with Matt's idea, Well, there's all kinds
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: of information about it, but it wouldn't be important to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: have the hunter's name on it. Let's say, let's say
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: you knew that some county in Michigan, once upon a time,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: some county in Michigan used to every year. I'm just
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: gonna pull like a number that's not achieved. But let's
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: say some county in Michigan every year would kill twenty
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Boone and Crockett bucks every year. But then you look
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and it's been a decade since one has been produced
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: in that county. Do you regard that as helpful or
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: not helpful information? If I was a game hunter, I
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: guess I would find that as helpful. If if you
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: were a guy that wanted to deal with a big score,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: yet to be very helpful, I think, But I also
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: think it's telling. It's telling of something else. The fact
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: that some people abuse it or fetishize it. I don't
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: think then means that the whole idea of scoring something
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: is invaluable or invalidated because some guy is a prick
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: about it. So do you think this guy will go
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: back next year? Catch that croppyn't have the first and
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: second place? Speaking of fish, what health advisories on fish? Like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you eat a lot of fish, you eat a fair
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: bit of fish, fish marks, but not as much as
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: you pay much attention to health advisories. I don't. You
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: really don't. I really don't. It's it's trick like they
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: I don't, but I'd rather I didn't know about him.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: That's yeah, I got nervous. I'll say that like I
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I'm willing to trust. I mean, I live as though
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I trust the science emphatically. Like if there's there's a
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: there's a reservoir by my house that I fish and
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: says don't eat fish out of your more than three
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: times a month, and I'll be like, okay, I will.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: If as long as I don't eat four times, then
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: I am one hundred percent. You know, um, it's weird.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: There's so much weird stuff about food. It's like though,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: it's like, uh, I know, I hear people talk about
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: that all the time, that pond um. But these are
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: people like friends of mine where I live that oh no,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: there's that help. But These are people that eat grilled
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: meat and process meat like brats and stuff four or
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: five times a week. There's so much evidence that world
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: meat causes cancer. It's like undeniable. But they'll do that,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: you know, So it's like That's one of the things
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: that frustrates me about it is when I was living
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: in Seattle, we had a great yellow perch fishery. No
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: one would touch it because everyone knows about this thing
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: that you weren't supposed to eat more than like some
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: number of months. But like, weren't you just ship faced
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: the other night? Ask your doctor? How often should I
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: get so drunk that I can't remember where I was?
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I can't even not more than four times. I don't
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: pay attention to advisories because this box says the word
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the serge in general says, quit smoking now because it
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: greatly reduces your risk of health. And that's not slowing
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: you down, not a bit. Uh talk, Yeah, I talk
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: about what Parker Hall's perspective on it. His perspective is
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: if he was to be so lucky and to be
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: such a good fisherman for the rest of his days,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: to catch so many fish that he would then poison
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: himself and his family from feeding them so many of
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: these fish. Then he will he and his family will
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: die happy because he was such a good fisherman. You'll
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: know he was a winner. He he had a lot
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: of good days spent. Okay, uh, Mark, I hate you
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: another dear one being in deer hunting country at all.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: The guy wrote in Wonderuness you know how there's this
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: commonly held perception, probably true, seemingly true, that when you
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: pressure dear they become nocturnal. They become increasingly nocturnal with pressure.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: You don't you don't like that? Yes? Is it a
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: commonly held perception? Everyone here would agree that there's like
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: a thing like you know, deer under more and more
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: pressure do more and more move last during daylight. This
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: guy has a great idea that I think, Well, i'm
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: gonna tell you, Mark, I'm gonna give you a hot till.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: This is gonna change the white tailed world. Why not
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: go out on your property and raise Holy hell at
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: night all the time. I like it, and drive them diurnal.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: It's very interesting idea. It's a great idea. Those deer
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: like bro I don't think ship at night. See you
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: see the people out here? I wait till that sun
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: is high in the sky, and then I go out
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: into that field and catch a bite. Changing lives. What's
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: that You're changing lives right there? That's interesting. And another
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: dude about white tails wrote in Wondering um, if you
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: could buy the app through the liberal application of dough
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: and heat lure, you're in. If you could make the
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: rut come earlier by by all the mimicry and making
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: deers think they were missing out, well I'll say this.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: I don't know if you could or not, but I
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: think that you could potentially instigated rock because I think
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: bucks are can breed dose anytime. I think so that
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: they're always the only reason. Yeah, well people are that way.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: It doesn't mean that perch oar. Well, yeah, but female
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: like human females are ready all the time too. But no,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: that's a big thing. That's where they think. That's one
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: of the things they think drove human monogamy was the
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: I like a thing to drove human monogamy. That is
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: that there's no like one of human female is receptive.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: There's no outward manifestation. It's not like a baboon or something,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: but there's an outward manifestation and it could happen at
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: any point in time, it could happen throughout the year.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: So you didn't have, like humans to guard your reproductive partner.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: You couldn't be like a deer and be like, I'm
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: out for eleven months, but I'll be back when the
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: action happens. You had to like be and it and
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: it's sort of and it sort of drove you know,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: like humans are kind of monogamous, and that's a thing
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: that helped driving. I never heard that. But where were
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: you in this? Oh? Well, the white you're challenging that
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: a buck can. He's ready to go whenever. I know
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: that right that the rut is triggered by changing levels
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: of daylight, which then impacts rising levels into staster on
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: a buck and estrogen in a dough. And so when
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: the dough reaches that certain level, which is triggered only
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: by the change in daylight, that then we'll bring her
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: into heat, which then will allow her leads to her
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: standing and a buck being able to make her. Would
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: a buck be able to do that otherwise? If you could,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: if you could somehow? Now, I think there have been
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: studies where they've put deer in control environments where they
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: can change where they can control photo period and then
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: have been able to change the timing of breeding within
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: a closed facility on like lab deer. Basically, So if
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: you could do that to a doll, but then have
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: a buck just maintain regular status quo, would he breed
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: her if she was standing in April because she thought
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: it was the time ago? Maybe? Um, but I don't
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: think that. Psychon, I'm out with a bunch of snort
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: wheezes and about this, I'm gonna throw us something now.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: Then I don't expect anyone to really know us by
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: know that a listener will know an email in if
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: you were to capture a deer, capture deer here a buck,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: and in transport that buck to the southern hemisphere, how
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: long would it take until he was shutting his antlers
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: six months later? Now that it's a question, right, Um,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I gotta follow up for you. Oh yeah, go ahead. Um,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: if any of you guys ever wish that instead of
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: being year round like we have it that you could
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: switch like rolls will say a bowl or the elk
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: species have like a human run and just rolling like
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: you know, early to mid September and hang out for
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: about thirty days, fight and roll around a mud and tiss,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: get things done and then and then leave. What are
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: you gonna do for the other eleven months of the year.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: I'm just asking if you don't make it during deer season,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: it would be like a wedding reception all the time. Man,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: It's it's such an interesting thought that we had. Never
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: has a CCS got into the way we're in. It's
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: just like this time of year when all of a sudden,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: like everyone's gonna breed now. It's highly competitive. There's no
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: sense of allegiances. Dudes who just like beat each other
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: to death. That's not gonna works. It's like five beta
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: alpha and stuff like that. Right, Okay, one last one.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: I'm never gonna play seeing through the bullshit? Uh, reincarnated?
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: Did I preview this one with you guys? Reincarnated? I
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: didn't read the whole email, so I don't think I
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: got this email. Come in. I didn't read the whole thing,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: so I didn't see the dude the email to us
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: about this, Oh you could be reincarnated as an animal?
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: What do you go with? Oh? Yeah, you did some platter,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: Thank you? Mine is big old bull out man. Really,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: everybody trying to shoot out. I want to rip one
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: big old bugle. I want to urinate down my leg,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: freaking destroy some trees. Ship You don't care how bad
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I want juke some dude, like, make him follow me
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: down the mountain for three miles. They just danish. But
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: you like the last question. You just had to climb
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: a mountain and I even seal it. Yeah, it'd be
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: nice ripping the bugles. Be cool at sh man, do
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: your do your way far off elk bugle albody, get ready.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: This is a bugle way far off where you're like
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: so off you barely You want the kind where you're
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: like you can't even tell if you heard it. That's
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: when he barks at you. So you've come back as
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: the lab An eagle. You come back as a bullet,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: ripping up trees and bugling. I'd roll flying squirrel man,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: because have you ever won? Because I want like, squirrels
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: are cool, but I want people shooting at me. And
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: have you ever felt the soft tummy on a flying squirrel?
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: It is un islmost like velvet. The most unbelievable picture
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: yourself every night kicking back? Was it calling man? Just
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: like when you're you don't know when you're laying in
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: bed and you and you and you're like you move
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: your legs to get to a fresh zone or whatever.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: Just the feeling of myself as a flying squirrel. Yeah,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: you can get a little bit of that eagle feeling.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Every now and then I wake up and be like, jeez,
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: do I feel good? Like I mean, I feel good? Yeah? Loon, loon, loon.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Then you can fly, you can fish. People like him. Yeah,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: I know what she say. You get to make that
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: cool noise out of the late fly out at night
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: just over the head. You hear like making that loon sound. Yeah,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: our dad called muck loon ship. It was like bad
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: muck deep muck. Was that that's a good animal? S
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: they probably live long. What are you gonna roll with, mark? Ah?
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I what a very different direction than you guys. Um.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I was thinking, like first, like a wolf, I like
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: to hunt, But then I realized I'm not really a
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: pack animal. I'm much more kind of like a curmudgeon
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: that would want to sit in a tree by myself
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: and wait and watch mountain. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna stick with the game birds thing because that's
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: everything I do and um, so you're gonna live about
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: a year and a half. It's gonna be a good year.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: And you know it's like why hitting some brush like
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: there's like everyone knows, like technically in some cases geese
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: mate for life. And uh, I was telling you earlier today,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: how uh bob white kaya will she'll lay your eggs,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: get together with the male. It's fertilized her, you know,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: bread with her, leaves him to watch the eggs, and
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: she goes off like my first wife and does it again.
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: But the ringneck pheasant is I want to be gaudy.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: I want to have a big rooster crow and I
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: don't want to be I want to I don't want
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: to be monogamous in the next life. I want to
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: be I want to have all the ladies and have
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: no responsibility. And if you're an elk, you gotta take
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: care of all them women at the same time. That's
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: just want to I just want to run around and
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: crow again. And all right, y honest, Uh, let's tell
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: pull up who's coming the person my mom picked, Yes,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: we do that first, well, and then that person because
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: they might pick the underdog. It's gonna be an hour
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: until they get down here. It's gonna feel in it,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: and then we'll explain how how it works. All right,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: So the person that is sitting in this seat, if
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: you would like to please come on down to the
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: stage and you're gonna play seeing through the bullshit presented
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: by Vortex with us. It is the balcony right center. Okay.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Does everybody know which section that is? If you're out there,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: it should say on your ticket. Okay, you guys know
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: you are in balcony right center and the seat is
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: M three. Okay, So here's how so are are We
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: wanted to do the game and our bodies of Vortex
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: help us out by creating a gift that we can
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: give out. Do I have all the right here? So
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: you get these here? Uh brands picketing new ten by
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: forty two fiery binoculars, stuped up, stuped up high in binoculars.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: Well they got they gotta built in laser range finders.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: So as you have your binoculars and I'll carry a
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: range finder. He's got the range finders in there, so
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: you hit the button the range find stuff. We're messing
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: around and we were zapping. Uh. We we were able
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: to range find deered over a thousand yards. We were
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: messing around with these, So you get these for seeing
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: through the bullshit and playing the game. Now the game
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: is this. We're gonna tell you two. We're gonna tell
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: you a thing that's true, but you're gonna have to
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: pick it out from two things that are not true.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: Where's the person? I think he's repelling? Oh? Are you
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: coming down? Come on? Come on? You have a peak
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: for him? Up? Hop on up? Are you fired up?
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: Or do you wish you weren't doing it? You're fired up?
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: What's your name? Rick? Meet you? Hey? Can we have
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: a Actually you passing that chair? Thank you? I wish
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: we put rack right there anywhere, but let me put
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: you in the middle. Right. So, Rick, you're gonna hear
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: a thing that's true and two things that are not true,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: and your job is to suss out the true one.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: You want to go first. You want to give him
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: the true one first. It's in with the true one,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: like like that Princess bride thing. Um. So I guess
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: one of the I was reading about this and it
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: was published last year and the the journal Wildlife Management.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: I guess one of the one of the age old
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: questions in white tail management is how they avoid inbreeding
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: and UM, it seems like particularly president like with habitat
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: fragmentation that do you're getting confined to smaller areas and
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: there the populations you got these meta populations that aren't linked.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: So UM people have always wondered how they don't suffer
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: inbreeding depression. So uh, these this group of UH social
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: social scientists and and behavioral cologists from Michigan State took
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: some detailed observations took some detailed observations on white tail
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: does and it turned turns out that um, not only
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: do they uh segregate from their first siblings and there
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: and their first and their male for siblings and first
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: and second cousins, like they become spatially segregated from them
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: during the rut, but they become highly aggressive towards them
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: when when they do encounter them. So I got because
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I guess the the male relatives are our our our
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: keen to make like unlike humans, they don't mind because
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: siblings but also first and second cousins. Yeah, did a
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: dough can detect. Yeah. There's a case study part of
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: the paper where they talk about a few incidences where
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: they've caught um. The dough is actually trying to nip
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: off the testicles of Okay, that's dog right, dog rick
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: the hell they get done. Mh, I'm gonna take you
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: back to Okay. There are a couple of promoters around
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: Niagara Falls and they get this idea that how how
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: they can raise up some money and they buy an
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: old schooner, like a barge schooner, and they figure, you
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: know what people would really pay a lot of money
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: to see is if we filled it full of zoo
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: animals and ran it over Niagara Falls to its destruction.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: And so they get some bears, they get geese, they
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: get a buffalo, They put dogs and cats on it,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: and it doesn't really work. As the bears jump out
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: and swim to shore, everything else goes over the falls.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: It's rumored at the first creature besides the fish to
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: ever survive the fall over Niagara Falls was was a goose.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: And it's estimating the popular estivating the number of people
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: that came to see this happen is as difficult as
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Trump's inauguration, but it's estivated. Between five and thirty thousand
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: people came to watch this menagerie that came to watch
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: this menagerie of animals go over Niagara Falls to their death.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: Best estimates put it at ten thousand people gathered to
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: watch this happen. But you haven't heard the last one. Yeah,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna readmind right out of the newspaper article. Last summer,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: a new Indiana state record law argemounth bass was caught,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: eclipsing the previous record, which was a fourteen pounds six
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: ounces basses caught by Jeffer Schultz, which had stood for
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: twenty years on a neighborhood pond in Bloomington, Indiana. An
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: eight one year old Graham A Carol Lundbergh took her
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: seven year old grandson Jackson fishing. She forgot the babe.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Carol picks up a cigarette button and puts it on
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: the hook. I guess you thought it looked like a worm.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: She cast it out, passes Roger, a grandson, and he
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: immediately drags up a toad. The fish is certified, it's
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: sixteen pounds eight ounces, and it becomes the new Indiana
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: state record large mountain. Just last summer. What's that bull
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: That was bullshit? And you think that Steve is the
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: true story? Like absolutely certain you got. You're the first
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: guy to ever win. Man. Have you heard the story before?
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: You never heard any before? You never heard that story before?
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: What was it? The game of away? Good job, man,
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: work man, Thank you for coming up. Everybody else, hold on,
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: what what what? What? We forgot something? Yeah, you're forgetting
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: something very important. There's a giant merge table out my system. Man,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: Thank you very much. With that, love all you guys
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: very much.
