- 1:22Roy Drew steps to the plate with a 266 batting average.
- 1:25Two home runs, 33 RBI's.
- 1:29Halecki, eight and eight in this 1978 season.
- 1:33His pitch is a slider outside for a ball one and O.
- 1:36Two and five, lifetime against the Braves.
- 1:39Halecki was a 7.3-8 earned run average.
- 1:44Mike calls one and one.
- 1:46Oh, one pitch.
- 1:54Like two calls.
- 1:57Nothing to do.
- 2:00Halecki in front of Roy Drew, no balls to two strikes.
- 2:04Halecki looking in for the target from DiMargo, the O-26.
- 2:11Fly ball left field, Fuchsfield goes back under this one.
- 2:14And then comes in, makes the catch out number one.
- 2:25This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the San Francisco Giants.
- 2:30It's only for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 2:33Any public games and rebroadcasts are to use the description and accounts of this game.
- 2:36Without the express written consent of the San Francisco Giants, there is prohibited.
- 2:40Where is the consent here?
- 2:42Air personnel involved in this broadcast were approved, but it's well not exactly approved.
- 2:49Well, they said it was okay.
- 2:53Temporarily.
- 2:55San Francisco Giants was taking care of the phone.
- 2:57Halecki takes low for a ball, takes outside for a ball of two and O.
- 3:03In fact, I'm waiting for the phone to ring now.
- 3:06Two and nothing.
- 3:08Halecki is too okay.
- 3:09Two and six. And the office really fooled by that one.
- 3:13Office thought that was going to be a fast ball or some pitch inside to him.
- 3:17He fell away and it was a slow breaking ball that dropped in over the play.
- 3:22Office looked at Halecki as though he has a mirror on the mound.
- 3:26Two and six.
- 3:28Fast ball, low for ball three, close.
- 3:31Pete Ward coaches it first time, Burgess the third for the Braves, the three-one pitch.
- 3:39Granted the shortstop, up with it in Mepsker, is slow and two-minute down.
- 3:45Office really looked at Halecki as though Halecki had come up with some real trick pitch.
- 3:53It was rolling, it's falling away from that ball and then it was a slow breaking pitch that dropped in.
- 4:02Two and down and Gary Matthews hitting 282, 16 over, 59 RBI.
- 4:10It's like glowing inside for a ball of one and O.
- 4:13Halecki making his 26th appearance of the year.
- 4:16Ground ball base hit by a diving Evans in the left field. Matthews singles the left.
- 4:22But he'll get the ball back in. Halecki will not pitch a no-hitter against the Braves today.
- 4:27And it'll bring up Jeff Burrows batting 314.
- 4:31Bill Matlock has projected himself into the National League.
- 4:36Batting race lead, he has taken over that lead.
- 4:40Matlock looking for his third batting championship in his major league career, which has not spanned that many years.
- 4:50He's a 316, Dave Parker is 316 and Jeff Burrows is batting now 314.
- 4:56Matlock rooting for Burrows to make out here, it's a throw to first base. Matthews dives back in.
- 5:01Right hand batter against Halecki, the outfield. Back up, throw to first. Oh, he had him moving the wrong way. Halecki almost picked him off.
- 5:17Matthews little boy is a dugout watching the game. He doesn't want to get embarrassed by being picked off at first base.
- 5:22Lead by Gary, pitch on the way to Burrows is low from all one else.
- 5:32And there's a small crowd here today watching the Braves.
- 5:38Throw to first. The hope just as we can against the Cincinnati Reds, the Giants drive to hold off the Reds.
- 5:52These fans will be out to support the ball club that brought so much excitement to Campbell's.
- 5:59They've done an outstanding job, unfortunately falling into a slump that has seen them win only one out of nine, drop them seven games back to the Dodgers.
- 6:09Pitch to Burrows is a strike, and it's one and one.
- 6:13That's the overall picture of 1978 if anyone would have said.
- 6:16Before they started playing training, the Giants would be in second place seven games back or not when they found too many believers.
- 6:29Breaking ball low for ball two, two and one.
- 6:33Would you have believed Joe?
- 6:36Count of two balls and a strike.
- 6:46Stretched by Hellekeet.
- 6:49The look at first, Matthews runs the pitch taken, the throw to second, he's safe at second base.
- 6:56Matthews, he's in second base.
- 7:00The pitch taken, the throw to second, he's safe at second base.
- 7:06Matthews feels second.
- 7:09And it's three and one to Burrows.
- 7:18Oh, runner in scoring position at second base.
- 7:21The Braves have been running pretty much against the Giants in the series.
- 7:24Atlanta has already won this season's series against the Giants, as has Cincinnati, as has the Dodgers.
- 7:33The Giants are only ahead of Houston and San Diego in the Western Division.
- 7:40Ball for Burrows draws the base on ball.
- 7:43Runners at first and second.
- 7:51And in the Eastern Division the Giants were even with Philadelphia, but well ahead of everyone else.
- 7:59They've had difficulty in their own division.
- 8:04Runners at first and second with two down, Nolan the left-hand batter hitting 251, four home runs, 21 out of the eyes.
- 8:13Hellekeet stretches the pitch, breaking ball to strike, going one.
- 8:18We're in the top of the first, beautiful afternoon in Candlestick.
- 8:23The Giants are in second.
- 8:31Glantz is second.
- 8:33The one-strike pitch misses out five for one and one.
- 8:38Even up count.
- 8:41It's really warm out here today.
- 8:44A little warm as a matter of fact.
- 8:47And breaking ball inside this time for two and one.
- 9:03Two ball, one strike count.
- 9:06Matthews away from second. Burrows from first. Left-hand batter wakes, takes outside, ball three.
- 9:12Hellekeet behind three and one on Nolan.
- 9:16So after getting the first two batters, Matthews singles. Burrows walks on a three-one count. Now it's three and one to Nolan.
- 9:24Hellekeet three-one pitch. Strike two call, just got the outside corner full count.
- 9:30The runners will be going on this three-two pitch.
- 9:35Burrows from first, Matthews from second.
- 9:38Burrows from first, Matthews from second.
- 9:42Hellekeet trying to get over the 500 mark. He's won eight times in the last days, but a tough season for him.
- 9:48Early season injuries float him down.
- 9:51Three-two pitch, line drive, one hop to Matlock going a step to his right as it flows.
- 9:56The first side retires.
- 9:58Nolan, one hit, no errors, two runners left on.
- 10:02We're going to the bottom of the first. It is the Braves, nothing but Giants coming to bat.
- 10:06The Braves coming to bat.
- 10:09Come on you, I'm never going to come on you again.
- 10:16I'm going down the road with you, all the time you and me.
- 10:22Get ready for National Chevy Week America coming September 15 through the 23rd,
- 10:27when Chevy dealers everywhere will be offering some great Chevy value.
- 10:30There will be a big selection of cars and trucks for you to choose from, and many dealers will be extending their hours.
- 10:36There will be great values on cars like Chevy Chevette, Monte Carlo, and the Chevrolet Capri and Impala,
- 10:42on trucks like Chevy Law and Blazer, and on seven-band shoes.
- 10:46It will all be happening during National Chevy Week starting next Friday the 15th.
- 10:50At your Chevy dealers, so get ready America.
- 10:53Come on you, I'm never going to come on you again.
- 11:00I'm going down the road with you, all the time you and me.
- 11:06The bottom of the first inning, the Braves on defense, Burrows in left office,
- 11:24and center, Matthews in right, Gilbrus at third, Reusser at short, Hubbard at second,
- 11:30Murphy at first, Nolan catching, and Jimbounce doing the pitching.
- 11:34Jim, who I'm quite sure will be able to write another book after the 78 season.
- 11:43Bouton, who used to lose his cap all the time when he was a hard thrower with the Yankees,
- 11:49has lost it again, throwing a knuckleball up here, losing it.
- 11:54Bouton wanted to prove a point that he could make it back into baseball.
- 12:01He says that getting to the majors wasn't all that big in his plans,
- 12:09but that he just wanted to show somebody that he enjoys baseball,
- 12:13and that he wanted to be able to play baseball.
- 12:16He still can't keep the cap off.
- 12:19He keeps falling off even though he was pitching with the Yankees.
- 12:24That used to be a lot of bad for me.
- 12:26I mean, how many times Bouton's cap would fall off every time was generally the winner.
- 12:32He faced the Dodgers, went five innings, gave them six hits, six runs,
- 12:39pitched three perfect innings against the Dodgers before things fell apart,
- 12:45and he faces Bill Matlock, the leading hitter with a 316 average.
- 12:49Bouton's pitch to Matlock, who takes the first strike, and Bouton loses the cap.
- 12:58Jim wrote the book ball for him.
- 13:06Knuckleball filed away to the left side strike to Matlock.
- 13:13Four hits against Neekro's knuckleball yesterday.
- 13:17Now the count, 11-2 to Bill leading off against Jim Bouton.
- 13:24Made some money and some enemies with his book ball for him as he stepped on a few toes.
- 13:33Knuckleball in the dirt for a ball, 1-2.
- 13:421-2 delivery, filed away.
- 13:44Some people were unkind enough to say that his ball for was actually an intentional walk,
- 13:52but it was a best seller.
- 13:57Even some of the people who were upset were probably reading it stiff and was in it.
- 14:05Knuckleball strike three.
- 14:07Oh, Matlock got caught looking.
- 14:08Bouton strikes that.
- 14:15It would be very ironic if Jim Bouton were to beat the Giants today because the Giants did not squawk that much,
- 14:23but there was controversy about whether Bouton should be allowed to pitch to a penitent contender, the Dodgers.
- 14:30But he did in his return to the big leagues. Terry Whitfield takes a low for a ball, but Dodgers routed him,
- 14:40and there was further nasty things said.
- 14:44Now if he would beat the Giants, strike calls, it would be a little embarrassing.
- 14:501-1 count to Whitfield hitting 2-96 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs.
- 14:54Line drive, base hit right field.
- 15:00Over leaping second baseman Hubbard, Matthews up with the ball, gets it back to the infield.
- 15:06And on its first base is Whitfield as Mike Ivy comes to play hitting 3-10 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs.
- 15:16Ivy looking at Dave Bruckle.
- 15:27Dale Evans due up next.
- 15:32Whitfield with his lead at first, he's about six a stretch to pitch on the way.
- 15:37Low and inside, Bouton loses his cap.
- 15:391-0, Jim looking a lot thinner than he did when he was in the big leagues before.
- 15:4914 pounds lighter than what he was in the majors.
- 15:55Filed away down the left field line as Whitfield was running.
- 15:59The count is very balanced.
- 16:01Like is that part of the two and a half foot cookie that Bob and Dan Cuneo brought in?
- 16:06Well I can't eat one now but I'll just put it right here on the side.
- 16:11Bob and Dan Cuneo, well it's a two and a half foot chocolate chip cookie swinging a mess by Ivy.
- 16:22One and two.
- 16:23Bob and Dan have bakeries in the city and they have a few and a half foot cookies.
- 16:38Bouton gets his second strike out and Whitfield steals the second base.
- 16:52He's struck out two of the first three space.
- 17:08Pitch outside, Javons for a ball, of course the Giants will be rooting for him another day.
- 17:14Behind second base, Royster keeping Whitfield close.
- 17:22Evans waits for the 1-0 pitch.
- 17:24Knuckler high for a ball, two and 0.
- 17:28Bouton's knuckleball does not have the speed that Necro does he?
- 17:33It's a very slow knuckleball.
- 17:36Two and 0 pitch, Bouton called a strike and it's two and one.
- 17:46Two balls and a strike.
- 17:50Bouton glasses his second to pitch to Evans.
- 17:59High fly ball, easy play for Matthews in right field.
- 18:02Bouton waiting for it and the Giants are retired in the first.
- 18:06Jim Bouton gets the ball, just one hit.
- 18:09One runner left on at the end of an inning, it is nothing nothing.
- 18:18When it comes to saving money, more Californians come to Bank of America than any other bank we're saving in the world.
- 18:25The reasons are simple.
- 18:26First, we're very convenient and we offer a wide variety of savings plans.
- 18:32Plus, there's the security of savings with California's largest bank.
- 18:36And now there are three new reasons to save at Bank of America.
- 18:40Our new six-month money market certificate, it pays the same high interest rate as U.S. Treasury bills.
- 18:46Or there's our new eight-year certificate of the project and our new higher earning individual retirement account.
- 18:52Both pay the highest bank interest allowed by law.
- 18:54Of course, there is a substantial interest penalty for early withdrawal.
- 18:58With our high interest rates, convenient locations and security, it's no wonder more Californians depend on Bank of America for savings.
- 19:08Come on in and let's talk about your day.
- 19:10Bank of America, number SBIC.
- 19:35We go to inning number two, a nothing nothing ballgame, and Dale Murphy will be up here to bat again.
- 19:42Murphy with a 2.37 average.
- 19:4823 home runs and 77 RBIs.
- 19:54He is the club leader in RBIs, a brazed club leader.
- 19:59It's on the way as a slider outside for a ball, 1-0.
- 20:05Murphy, Hubbard, and Gilbrough to fake that hula key.
- 20:09Reds, Pips strike tall one-on-one.
- 20:13Reds in town tomorrow night, Saturday and Sunday.
- 20:18I think there is a Giants two who remain in second place. The Reds lost last night, Giants keeping their second place spot.
- 20:29Ball two.
- 20:31I hope you'll be out here. There are seats available for all three games.
- 20:36I like his 2-1 pitch.
- 20:39Murphy checks her swing, takes low for ball three.
- 20:41He had just thrown off a lot of pitches. He hasn't missed that much, but he has missed by a little bit and consequently has been behind a lot of the hitters.
- 20:49He hasn't been behind a lot of them. He hasn't paced that many yet.
- 20:53We're only in the second inning. Strike two call.
- 20:55Three and two.
- 20:57Murphy, started to go to first base, comes back down, stares up at the space.
- 21:02Roll count to the big right hand batter.
- 21:05Three and two.
- 21:11Three and two pitch.
- 21:13Check swing foul off to the right and it stays at three and two.
- 21:24I wonder something. I wonder if you go over to K and B or Joe if you get to do the Giants games, if you get free tickets to Johnny Carson's show.
- 21:32Three and two pitch is fouled away to the right.
- 21:41Roll count.
- 21:47Am I in the packet?
- 21:49I don't know. I'm not supposed to campaign for you.
- 21:51Ground ball back to Olicki off his glove. He chased it down, picked it up and then dropped it again.
- 21:56So that will be a very definite error on Olicki.
- 22:02That ball jammed Murphy who was falling away. The ball hit his bat, rolled out to the mound to squibber.
- 22:10Olicki had it kick off his glove and he went over to pick it up.
- 22:15It bounced away from him. He tried to retrieve it and it kicked away and it will very definitely be an error.
- 22:33Look here, Jax says he's going to fall on it over the goal line.
- 22:37A bit like the Oakland Raiders but there goes the runner swinging the miss.
- 22:39The second is into center field off the glove of Madlock and Murphy will go to third.
- 22:46Maybe they better throw that ball out of play. I don't think it's catchable.
- 22:51Check and see if it has a rubber center.
- 22:54And Mike Ivey did look at it and see if there was something wrong with it.
- 22:59Murphy winds up at third.
- 23:01Solemn Bay and I guess they will give Tamargo the throwing here.
- 23:09Oh Murphy is at third when he should have been in the dugout but he may soon be.
- 23:15Nobody else. A squeeze bunt and he will score the throw to first and Hubbard is retired.
- 23:23But it's a squeeze bunt and the sacrifice gives the Braves a run.
- 23:27Braves a run and it's one to nothing. Wheel pause for safety identification.
- 23:32This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 23:35Now, Tim Nelson, weekday warnings on KSFO 560 San Francisco.
- 23:44Woodhawk goes from one to three on Hubbard but he gets a sacrifice on the squeeze bunt.
- 23:50Rod Gilbert is now in the third baseman up here hitting 248 taking ball one.
- 23:54One out pitch to it. Strike one and one.
- 23:59Throw and error by Halleke.
- 24:02A stolen base by Murphy. A throwing error by Tamargo and a squeeze bunt.
- 24:06Swing and a miss. Gilbert is out in front. One and two.
- 24:09A textbook run by the Braves. One two pitch. Bounce foul to the left side.
- 24:39One two pitch fly ball right field. Dwyer long run and dives and fouls there until he can't make the catch.
- 24:48Jim Dwyer making a long run and a headlong dive trying to catch that ball.
- 24:55Dwyer has been gone for a couple of days. Jeff and the family took him out of the line up.
- 25:02He's back and they're playing right field. Jack Clark's still under the weather.
- 25:12One two pitch. Bounce to the right side. Matt Lockfield that throws the first and two men are down.
- 25:21Money's a household word at Bank of America. It may not be in our household.
- 25:26It's available right now for home improvement loans.
- 25:28Want to spruce up the house or add needed space? Talk to a loan specialist at Bank of America.
- 25:34They're an equal housing lender. Todd gives him Bob a good hand as he comes to the play.
- 25:39He has two good ones but they applaud for him.
- 25:44Right hand batter takes a fastball strike going home. Braves lead one to nothing.
- 25:50And Hulik is one strike pitch. Popped a foul back into the sixth strike too.
- 25:58That's a souvenir that somebody can get and say Jim Bouton fouled this one off.
- 26:08Oh two pitch tying inside. 12 ball one and two. Beautiful afternoon in the Campbell's Bay.
- 26:15One two pitch. Fly ball hit to center field. Cruz is there in right center to make the cats on the side retire.
- 26:25One run. No hit. Two errors. And no one left on.
- 26:33We go to the bottom of the second. It is one to nothing Atlanta.
- 26:36If you're between the ages of 30 and 60, congratulations.

- 27:24In Walnut Creek, see Dennis Faryon. And in Richmond, see Dwight Post.
- 27:31In number two, the Braves lead one to nothing and Jim Bouton out towards the second as Cruz Dwyer and Tomargo will face Bouton.
- 27:49Bouton gets to decide whether to give up just the base hit to Whitfield in the first inning.
- 28:07Throw to second base and we're ready to go.
- 28:1180 Cruz batting 238 with seven home runs.
- 28:24Those chocolate chip cookies are good.
- 28:31Cruz takes the strike on one.
- 28:35Nothing in one.
- 28:37Bouton is going to spend more time picking up his caps than doing anything else.
- 28:44One strike to it.
- 28:47Lost the ball. He didn't lose it that time. It just slid a little bit.
- 28:51Dennis took a piece of gum in the back of his nose.
- 28:54Ball on the strike.
- 28:56Swing and a miss at that big, slow-breaking knuckle ball is one and two.
- 29:07Bouton in front of Cruz. He struck out two in the first inning, Madluck and Ivy.
- 29:14That ball inside wanted to slip that one by.
- 29:21It is two and two.
- 29:30Bouton getting the sign from Nolan.
- 29:34Knuckle ball popped up into shallow center.
- 29:37Off is coming in long run. Not going to get to it. Bounced in front of him.
- 29:40Cruz is trying for two and he will be in at second.
- 29:43Cruz showing outstanding hustle that time as off has had to wait for the ball.
- 29:48Cruz just kept going and goes into second base.
- 29:52Farmers are famous for auto insurance, but your farmer's agent is also able to protect your home, your life, and can also fill your other insurance needs.
- 30:00Call your farmer's agent today. Say, hey, farmer's agent.
- 30:07Jim Dwyer hitting 235.
- 30:12Five home runs, 35 out of the island.
- 30:15Knuckle ball bounces up there. Nolan, protected from being a wild pitch blocking, that one rolled down the third base line and Cruz remains in second.
- 30:32Tomorrow night there will be skateboard acrobatics before the game.
- 30:37Out here at Candlestick.
- 30:39And a skate off this.
- 30:46And then they could skate on the turf and look back at second base.
- 30:49And the knucklers are striking one-on-one.
- 30:52They must bring out special ramps and things to work on because they can't do much.
- 30:58They could go on the warning track, I guess, but it wouldn't be too exciting.
- 31:02Keep going about 40 miles an hour and hit into that dugout.
- 31:05One-one pitch.
- 31:09Strike two calls. That looks like that might have been a slider as a knuckle ball.
- 31:16One and two.
- 31:25Second base is Cruz with no one out and Dwyer batting left-handed against knuckle ballers.
- 31:30Knuckle ballers in about five and a glance. Second pitch is grounded to the right side.
- 31:36So Dwyer gets Cruz over to third as Dwyer is thrown out for the first out of the inning.
- 31:41And John Tamargo will be the batter.
- 31:43Giant payoff inning can win you cash prizes, maybe a 78 Chevette from the Golden West Network and your Northern California Chevy dealers.
- 31:51Ten, 25, 50, 100 dollars, new Chevy Chevette.
- 31:53And your name, address, telephone number, and a postcard to giant payoff inning, post on the box 560 San Francisco 9-4101.
- 32:01The bottom of the sixth. That is the payoff inning today.
- 32:07Getting close to the time when it's not going to do any good to send in any more of those postcards to us.
- 32:12Here's them next year. I'm well, yeah, we can put them in a little package and send them over to...
- 32:16...and Frank Gil read them.
- 32:23John Tamargo batting with a runner at third. They didn't feel drawn in.
- 32:28Tamargo takes the knuckle ball low.
- 32:31They both playing their drawn-in defense a little different than usual.
- 32:35They shortstop racers almost over to second base.
- 32:38Rather than guard the hole through the left side, he's playing almost directly behind the...
- 32:43...fly ball foul out of play.
- 32:47It is one and one. Tamargo hitting that ball foul.
- 32:51Tamargo up here with a fly ball to the outfield could even the game.
- 32:55That's one apiece. The Giants trail at the moment, one-nothing.
- 33:00Ball on a strike to the left-hand batting Tamargo. One home run. Seven RV has a 250 average.
- 33:06Now, Royster's playing to the right of second. Foul away by Tamargo. One and two.
- 33:11Gilbrit, the third baseman, moves almost 30 feet off the line.
- 33:19And Royster, who positions himself before the pitch is made, about a step or two to the left...
- 33:25...of second base, has been moving all the way to the right of the bag.
- 33:29Now he's to the left side of second and remains there.
- 33:35The one-two pitch bounce slowly to second and Cruz will have to hold at third.
- 33:39Tamargo is thrown out for the second out of the inning.
- 33:43If Tamargo couldn't get the ball out of the infield, he had to direct it to Hubbard.
- 33:47And with two down, they bring up Roger Metzger.
- 33:52Metzger batting 240.
- 33:55No home runs at 19 RV. The infield will back up now with the exception of Gilbrit, who plays even with the bag.
- 34:01And the stretch by Bouton.
- 34:04Pitch is a fastball that misses where ball one, Bouton, loses his cap again.
- 34:09The Giants aren't exactly playing as though they're all that interested in things the last couple of days.
- 34:15They have to get pulled together and realize that the world hasn't come to an end because they dropped out of first place.
- 34:22And they're going to have to get back up to the infield.
- 34:25They have to get pulled together and realize that the world hasn't come to an end because they dropped out of first place.
- 34:31One-oh pitch is a strike and Metzger wasn't too sure of that.
- 34:37Backs out of there, it's one-on-one.
- 34:40Two out, runner at third is Cruz.
- 34:44Bouton Red Sox have got to be stealing a little bit droopy today after they dropped out of first place.
- 34:58Knucklehead low and inside, first time they've been out for even longer than the Giants because the Red Sox at one time looked like they had a runaway win in that Eastern Division near Arc and Lake.
- 35:14Now they're trailing the Yankees.
- 35:17Picked up high, far ball, three and one.
- 35:20Bob Lemon would certainly have to get some votes for manager of the year if the Yankees won.
- 35:23He took over from Billy Martin when the Yankees were really faltering.
- 35:31And now they've come back to take over first place.
- 35:35Three-one pitch.
- 35:37Inside, for ball four, Knucklehead had just barely missed.
- 35:42Metzger walks.
- 35:43And Halleke now.
- 35:52Halleke robbed of a home run in Lord Pankow.
- 36:00And they gained that the Giants looked like they were going to win.
- 36:07Finally lost five to four.
- 36:08Takes high for a ball and that was the turning point of the season, that one right there.
- 36:13Some of the fire went out of the ball court when they lost that game.
- 36:18Never regained it.
- 36:20Cruz at third.
- 36:22Metzger at first with two outs.
- 36:24Stoutman at fifth.
- 36:26And Halleke tries to hold up swings and misses.
- 36:27That time, Bob threw what appeared to be a hard slider while breaking away from Halleke and it's one-on-one.
- 36:38Metzger and Cruz at the corners with two down.
- 36:41The Giants trail one-nothing in bottom of the second.
- 36:45Low for a ball, two-on-one.
- 36:50One thing, Bob will never be out of shape as long as he pitches because he's staying shape bending over to pick up his cap.
- 36:58Two-one pitch.
- 37:00High ball three.
- 37:02And there's an old joke about why it took so long to play golf.
- 37:10Hit your shot and drag Fred with bottom and throw the ball and pick up your cap.
- 37:15Metzger leads it first.
- 37:22Three-one pitch.
- 37:24Strike two call.
- 37:26Full count three and two.
- 37:28Don looks almost surprised when his cap doesn't fall off.
- 37:33Three and two to Halleke.
- 37:41Metzger will be running.
- 37:42He goes three-two pitch.
- 37:45Popped up foul, playable for Gilbert, the third baseman in foul territory.
- 37:49He makes the cap and the side is retired.
- 37:52Here in the second inning, no rugs on a leadoff double.
- 37:56That's the major story.
- 37:58No errors and two runners left on.
- 38:00And it's the end of two-full.
- 38:03It is a braves one, the Giants nothing.
- 38:07In number three, the Braves lead the Giants one to nothing.
- 38:18And to come in and tell you about the action here in the third is Joe Agile.
- 38:23How about if I just do the play-by-play?
- 38:27It doesn't come to think of it.
- 38:30I don't think I'm going to ask people to send any more letters.
- 38:32Joe has a big house and he needs money.
- 38:44Jerry Royster is 0-1.
- 38:47Dwayne's in the ground with the two.
- 38:49Darryl Evans is third.
- 38:51Throws a cross.
- 38:53Royster is on number one.
- 38:55Darryl slain in on the edge of the infield turf.
- 38:58Then easy play.
- 38:59And then he's got a good office in the third inning.
- 39:02Office is 0-1.
- 39:06He got it to the shortstop Metzger in the first inning.
- 39:10Rowland hitting.253 with nine homers and 37 RBI's.
- 39:15One-nothing Atlanta in the third.
- 39:18Right hander deals.
- 39:20The breaking ball is in there.
- 39:22Caught the outside corner at the letter.
- 39:24Nothing in one.
- 39:26On deck is Gary Matthews.
- 39:27Like he says, he has wines and delivers.
- 39:30Fouled away by office.
- 39:320-2 to count.
- 39:38Look here, looking for his ninth win against eight losses.
- 39:42His ERE, a very good one, 2.89.
- 39:45Right hander started out the season on the disabled list.
- 39:50Breaking ball low and inside.
- 39:53Didn't miss by much.
- 39:54A ball and two strikes on office.
- 40:01Right hander ready again.
- 40:03Here's a 1-2 pitch on the way.
- 40:05Swung on, lifted, fouled on the left of your line.
- 40:07Evans and Metzger chasing Whitfield there, but none able to make the play.
- 40:11The ball's falling on the, in the bullpen on the warning track and then bouncing into the seats.
- 40:16Another count stage of the ball and two strikes.
- 40:19Tomorrow night, Saturday and Sunday, the Cincinnati Reds.
- 40:22Two single games.
- 40:26Day games on the weekends.
- 40:28Then the Giants hit the road again.
- 40:30They will be on their way to San Diego.
- 40:36They'll go down there and join the Navy.
- 40:391-2 delivery, swung on and again fouled away down the left of your line.
- 40:44Evans, shading his eyes, can't see the ball and it falls untouched on the warning track.
- 40:48They'll never did find that one.
- 40:52Very difficult time.
- 41:07They're getting a good time again.
- 41:09Here's a 1-2 pitch off his backs away from a low inside pass ball.
- 41:15Two and two.
- 41:16Beautiful, gorgeous day here at Candlestick.
- 41:20Outstanding weather.
- 41:22Swing and a miss at a change-up curve.
- 41:24A breaking ball and O'Kee had him way out in front.
- 41:27Out number two in the third inning.
- 41:29Now Gary Matthews.
- 41:31O'Kee getting his first strike out.
- 41:33Matthews one for one, single and stole second in the first inning and he was stranded.
- 41:37Matthews now has eight hits in his last 15th bat.
- 41:47Here's the pitch.
- 41:49Matthews takes a little bit low, ball one.
- 41:51Two down in the third, one nothing Atlanta.
- 41:54In the bottom of the inning it will be Matlock, Woodfield and Ivy.
- 41:57Here's a 1-0 delivery, he's inside 2-0.
- 41:59O'Kee ready again.
- 42:01Here's a 2-0 pitch.
- 42:03Matthews swings and he hits it to the center field.
- 42:05Going back his cruise he will get there waiting for it, makes the catch and Matthews is out number three.
- 42:11And O'Kee with his first 1-2-3 inning.
- 42:14We go to the bottom of the third.
- 42:16Not now Chuck, later.
- 42:18The score at 9-1 and a giant nothing.
- 42:20Here at the bottom of inning number three the Giants will send up Matlock, Woodfield and Ivy against Jim Mouffy.

- 44:11Matlock trying to become the first national leaguer to win three batting titles in four years since Clemente did it and he walked all four.

- 46:19Whitfield safely aboard on the field of choice.
- 46:22Throwing air by Foulton puts Giants on first and third.
- 46:27Here is Shevron Dealer who would just like to remind you that a big part of his job is to be an engineer car.
- 46:33And to you, that's just the Shevron way.

- 46:52Mike at his 3-10.
- 46:55The pitch on the way to him is in there for a called strike going once.
- 46:59Mike with 10 homers and 49 RBIs.

- 48:53To give Whitfield a stolen base, he goes to third on Joe Nolan's second throwing error of the inning.
- 49:07Check that at first, the first one was by Jim Bouton.
- 49:10There's him through the ball in the center field.
- 49:12Count on Evans at one and one. They call the pitch out, Bouton threw it outside, but it was very low.
- 49:20Joe Nolan had to go get it and he had to hurry the throw, then he threw it away.
- 49:26The infielder playing all the way in, three infielers to the right of second.
- 49:32Here's the pitch, Evans swings and he grounds his foul outside Jimmy Gavin for it in the coaching box at first.

- 51:00Atlanta got theirs in the second, and the Giants are moving things up in the third and trying to take a lead again.
- 51:10Here's a two-nothing pitch, low and away, three and oh.

- 55:29Burrows home run production and RBI production has been lessened in this 1970 season,

- 57:36Murphy in against Huligie, big right-hander with a 1-1 pitch on the way,
- 57:52as the breaking ball pulls Murphy, he swings and he fouls it away on the ground left side.
- 57:56One and two, Murphy is way out in front.
- 57:59Waiting his turn on deck is Glenn Hubbard, 1-1 game.
- 58:06Giants out for your play and Murphy to pull the ball and sweep.

- 58:23and Hallucin meets a fast one by him in another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.
- 58:27We go to the bottom of the inning, it is the Giants 1 and Atlanta 1.
- 58:32Coming September 15th through the 23rd, when Chevy dealers everywhere will be offering some great Chevy values,

- 58:43and many dealers will be looking at Chevy their hours.
- 58:45There'll be great values on cars like Chevy Chevettes, Monte Carlo, and the Chevrolet,

- 58:54It'll all be happening during National Chevy Week starting next Friday the 15th.
- 58:58After Chevy dealers, so get ready America!
- 59:26Ah, how quickly they forget.
- 59:30In the bottom of the fourth inning, it will be Tomargo Metzger and Hallucin against Jim Bolton.

- 1:00:24One ball and two strikes from a Giants catcher.
- 1:00:27Jerry Royster, the shortstop, is playing directly behind second base.
- 1:00:31Here's a 1-2 pitch, he's offside a fastball, 2 and 2.
- 1:00:36The outfield, around to the right, and Bolton once again loses his cap.
- 1:00:40Bolton putting a cap around this game.
- 1:00:50Right-hander with a 2-2 pitch is flung out and fouled away.
- 1:00:54That'll be out of play on top of the Atlanta dugout.
- 1:00:58There's 2 and 2.
- 1:01:05Now the hitting in this game has been almost non-existent.
- 1:01:08The only hit off Hallucin was a 2-0 single by Matthews in the first.

- 1:01:28...in the glove, Tomargo is out number one.
- 1:01:31You know, just like baseball, the Hot Dogs and Apple Five, the New Chevrolet Malibu is a real cross-leaser.

- 1:02:11Dives came in at the game with a team batting average of 254, the Braves collectively at 248.
- 1:02:17The Atlanta Picking Staff, the ERA, is 4.19.
- 1:02:22That gives you a pretty good idea of why Atlanta is at the bottom of the Western Division standing.
- 1:02:26Swung on and lifted foul, back of the Atlanta dugout again in the seat, nothing in one.
- 1:02:33Braves have made 132 errors and the two they have in this game with a total of 134 now this season.
- 1:02:41Giants have made 134 as well.
- 1:02:46Misses low, one and one on Ed Hulicki.
- 1:02:50The Giants have ERA at 3.35, rapidly going in the wrong direction.
- 1:02:59Here's a one-one pitch, swung on and lines fouled on the left field line, scattering the Atlanta bullpen.
- 1:03:08A couple of guys leaving out of the way to avoid getting hurt.
- 1:03:14One ball and two strikes on Hulicki, Bill Madlock waiting on deck.
- 1:03:18One-one game, Atlanta and the Giants.
- 1:03:30Bowden says, yes, the pitch is fouled away.
- 1:03:33Bowden was pitching for the Yankees when he won those 21 games.
- 1:03:47It was said that one of the reasons was he kept losing his cap.
- 1:03:52It was very distracting to the hitters.
- 1:03:55That was never verified.
- 1:04:03Bowden working on Ed Hulicki with two down in the fourth inning.
- 1:04:12One-one game.
- 1:04:15Here's a pitch, swung on, lifted high in the air down the left field line.
- 1:04:19Burrows getting under it, shading his eyes, makes the cap, and Hulicki is out number three.
- 1:04:26And Jim Bowden has recorded his first one-two-three inning.
- 1:04:30At the end of four, it's a one-one game.

- 1:05:39Well, we placed four innings there, Candlestick.
- 1:05:42Not too much hitting in this one.
- 1:05:44At Manny with one run on only one hit and two errors, the Giants have one run on only two hits and two errors.
- 1:05:51And here to bring you the play-by-play in the fifth inning is a guy that I consider to be a real package.
- 1:06:02He may not be in the package, but he is a package.
- 1:06:06We have your hand there.
- 1:06:08You got yourself into that one, not yourself out.
- 1:06:17You have a piece of paper.
- 1:06:21Glenn Hubbard will lead off against Ed Hallecki in the top of inning number five.
- 1:06:32Right hand better, sexy swing picked up by the ball.
- 1:06:35And the Booth want to send one of their best choices to Keith Yetter.
- 1:06:39One-oh pick, this is a strike, one-on-one. And also congratulations on having two fine boys, Tom and Bob, who wanted to say hello to him.
- 1:06:53Going in a miss, it's like the, Keith is a very avid Giant man.
- 1:07:01Things are a little tough for him now, but things will get better.
- 1:07:04It's foul back over the screen and it's one and two.
- 1:07:14Hallecki has retired in the last nine batters he's faced outside for a ball.
- 1:07:25It is two and two.
- 1:07:30Matthews single in the first inning, the only hit off Hallecki.
- 1:07:38Foul down the right field line, long run for Dwyer. He will not get there. It's back into the stands.
- 1:07:45A count for a range of two and two.
- 1:07:50Giant and the Braves, inning number five Hallecki and Bouton.
- 1:07:56And Jim Bouton has done an outstanding job so far here to allow just two heads.
- 1:08:03The Giants did not have a run. It is just the Braves. As far as that goes, he's just going in on their run.
- 1:08:09Two-two pick, deep to left, going back is Whitfield. That one's got a chance.
- 1:08:15Whitfield goes to the fence and makes the catch as the ball fades.
- 1:08:18Whitfield, looking at that ball, acted as if he thought it was going to be on the fence over, but then the ball faded and Whitfield makes the catch a couple of feet short of the barrier.
- 1:08:29The Giant ball players who appear on our broadcast receive a line, Botany 500 wardrobe from Rue Zetkin.

- 1:08:49Foul back.
- 1:08:53Down one and one to Gilbert with one out.
- 1:09:02Gilbert bounces it foul to the left side.
- 1:09:06One and two.
- 1:09:07One and two.
- 1:09:13One and two, Kemp.
- 1:09:20And Hillickey deals it off.
- 1:09:23Fly ball hit into deep right center. Crew's on the move, still going. He can't get it. It's going to be over his head to the fence.
- 1:09:29Gilbert is digging for two. He's got it for three. Matlock throw will not be in time. It's a triple.
- 1:09:37Gilbert with a triple over Crews' head into right center field and they raise with a threat as Jim Bouton will be the batter.
- 1:09:47And the fans give him Bouton a hand as he comes to the plate.
- 1:09:51Bouton flies the center. It's about the same place here. He'll get himself a run.
- 1:10:00The Blades' run came on a squeeze front. Evans and Tamago talk over that possibility again with Hillickey.
- 1:10:12Well, it's Dennis Dyson on his birthday today. He covers the Giants for the San Jose Mercury News.
- 1:10:17And happy birthday.
- 1:10:23Pitch misses for a ball.
- 1:10:26Hillickey pitching from a stretch and Bouton turns to look at third base coach Tom Brutus.
- 1:10:31In field, pulled in for the Giants.
- 1:10:35Hillickey's stretch. The pitch on dribble the first base.
- 1:10:39Diving down to one knee to field. It's Bouton digs for first but he's out.
- 1:10:43And holding a third is Gilbert.
- 1:10:45Bouton grounding the ball off the end of the bat.
- 1:10:49To the first baseman, Ivy, who retires him under 56.
- 1:10:53And Bouton gets another hand as he comes back.
- 1:11:03Jerry Royster. Wide out, grounded out. Batting with the runner is third and two men down.
- 1:11:08Hillickey will pitch from a wind up now. He's pitched to Royster, grounded to shortstop.
- 1:11:16And Evans cuts in front of the shortstop. The field throws the first and gutter.
- 1:11:21Well, Evans made a good play to get Royster.
- 1:11:25And here in the fifth, no runs on a hit, no errors and a runner left on.
- 1:11:30And as we have completed four and a half, the score is tied at one apiece.
- 1:11:36Long gutter.
- 1:11:41Giants will be at the top of the batting order. Bill Madlock, who is 0 for 1.
- 1:11:46Madlock has been called out on strikes and walks.
- 1:11:52Madlock, who has started the day leading the league in hitting.
- 1:11:56Yes, Burroughs is also 0 for 1. He was trailing Madlock.
- 1:12:10Madlock started the day at 3.16.
- 1:12:15And now Bill wanders away from the plate.
- 1:12:18Burroughs started at 3.14. Dave Parker batting 3.15 for the Pirates.
- 1:12:27Pitch to Madlock, four run and miss, strike one.
- 1:12:37Elfman Pitch is low and inside for a ball.
- 1:12:42And a two and a half. We're a team Joe. Is that all the packages that came from back East?
- 1:12:49Going the chopping sprees back there.
- 1:12:54One one pitch. Breaking ball as a strike at one and two.
- 1:12:59One two pitch. Grounded foul down the left field line.
- 1:13:12Stays at one and two.
- 1:13:18Bout and wanders off the mound, juggling the baseball.
- 1:13:23He bought a bunch of stuff for Antoinette too.
- 1:13:26One two pitch. Line drive, foul down the left field line.
- 1:13:33Madlock remains up there with a one and two count.
- 1:13:42Elfman's paging after that foul ball. Now a little of a torn of the bunch finds it.
- 1:13:48One and two counts for Madlock. Madlock, Woodfield and Ivy. The Reds in town over the weekend.
- 1:13:56They'll be out here tomorrow night, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:14:01One two pitch. Line drive and leaping catch by Gilbrough. The raw Madlock.
- 1:14:08Madlock with a line drive headed to his left field and Gilbrough sprinting to his left.
- 1:14:14Leaping and made the catch for the Elf.
- 1:14:23One man down, Terry Woodfield who's single and been safe on an air up here.
- 1:14:28Going in a foul ball out of line.
- 1:14:42It is strike on Terry Woodfield.
- 1:14:50One man.
- 1:14:54Check outside for a ball and Terry takes.
- 1:15:09Here's Bobbin's one one pitch. Knuckler's Bale's high, football two.
- 1:15:17Two and one.
- 1:15:21Bob delivers.
- 1:15:26Back to Mountain. His field is going to his left.
- 1:15:29Woodfield's right in the bunch for a base hit and he's thrown out for the second out of the inning.
- 1:15:35Now Mike Ivy is struck out here to sacrifice fly.
- 1:15:38The runs are this one scored. The Atlantis run scored on the squeeze but the Giants are to sacrifice fly.
- 1:15:45We're in the bottom of the fifth. Tied at one.
- 1:15:55Waiting. A pitch to him is low and inside for a ball. Wanna know?
- 1:16:01You get a lot of good things, Chuck.
- 1:16:08One oh pitch and Bobbin started to deliver and that changes mine.
- 1:16:17You don't have to say that twice.
- 1:16:21Football two.
- 1:16:26Bobbin's two oh pitch. Knuckleball's one on a net. It's two and one.
- 1:16:32Bobbin has a giant swing from the heel. Trying to hit one against the scoreboard.
- 1:16:41They're not having much success with it. Bobbin has not given up a hit since that double by Cruz in the second inning is Ivy fouls it at the plate. It's two and two.
- 1:16:52Cruz club was a run. Each with two hits. Each with two errors.
- 1:17:07Bounce to third base. Gilbert deep behind the bag. Long throw in the jersey. A drop by Murphy. Ivy is David's first.
- 1:17:15There'll be an error on the third base and down to eleven will be the batter.
- 1:17:24The errors have been more plentiful on the hits than the runs in this one.
- 1:17:44Stretch and a pitch. Evans pointing and misses strike one.
- 1:18:00Watt with stretch. Here's six. Evans takes high and inside. Football one and one. One one ball game in the fifth. Giants with two outs. Ivy is first.
- 1:18:14The shift put on against Evans. Three to the right of second base. Here's a little pop line. The short left field is going to drop for a base hit. Gilbert is tracking it down. Ivy will go to third. Evans is digging for second and Evans has himself a blue double.
- 1:18:29What they did that time putting the shift on against Evans. Hold the shortstop over to the right of second base. A little pop line on the left field line hole in the third base and Gilbert's had a shift. Here's two chances. Slim and none.
- 1:18:44Couldn't get to the ball. He got to it soon enough to keep Ivy scoring. Runners at second and third with two down. Cruz will be the batter.
- 1:18:55Now, Bart will have to get Cruz. Or the error would be a cross-blow. Two out throwing error by Gilbert to third baseman.
- 1:19:06Ball prior. Back to the base ball. There's no chance of those are back out the bat. Ending number five. 80 Cruz has doubled and walks.
- 1:19:24Stretched by Bouton to pitch to Cruz. Knuckleball low and outside for a ball. 1-0. Thatcher has to be careful when he throws the ball back to Bouton because Bouton is leaning over to pick up his staff.
- 1:19:381-0 count. 1-0 pitch to Cruz. Knuckler is a strike. 1-1. At third is Ivy. At second is Evans.
- 1:19:54Giants with the three hits off Bouton. Fouled away down the third base line. Two of the hits of in-bloop Cruz. Pop-fly to drop to the short center.
- 1:20:15He legs out for a double and Evans is a little pop-fly down the left field line. But he got a double. 1-2 count. Bouton getting the target with a 1-2 pitch to Cruz. Knuckleball low and outside. Ball two.
- 1:20:452-2 pitch. Knuckleball fouled away. Cruz almost jumping off his feet at a high knuckler.
- 1:21:032-2 count is 2-2. 2-2 pitch. Low for a full count of 3-2.
- 1:21:23Full count to Cruz. Two on. Runners at second and third. Two out. Bottom of the fifth. The score is tied at 1-1.
- 1:21:37Quick and a pop-foul back near the screen. Nolan comes back and makes a fine running catch. Joe Nolan, an outstanding one-handed catch, crashes into the screen, holds onto the ball, and Bouton gets out of the inning.
- 1:21:52Here in the fifth, another ovation for Jim Bouton as he goes to the dugout. Nolan hits an error and two runners left off. And as we have completed five innings, the score remains tied at 1-1.
- 1:22:09BWA developed ground-foot section and was the only airline to operate on every flight from San Francisco. Ground-foot section. Step in once. Fly twice. It's great.
- 1:22:29Before going heading number six, let's pause for station identification. This is the Golden West. Gratio Network.
- 1:22:41Now, Tim Nelson with the warnings on KSFO 560 San Francisco.
- 1:22:48Wonder what the new state strikes are going to be like.
- 1:22:58Roland office. Gary Matthews and Jeff Burrows against Ed Hallecky. A 1-1 ballgame in the top of the sixth. And appreciation today for the 24th season in double-headers. There are going to be a lot of prizes.
- 1:23:14Last ball was a strike to office. Several autographed baseballs with Joe Angel's autograph. One strike pitch, fouled away. Strike two. O-2. There'll be smirks.
- 1:23:30Some pictures of Joe. A calendar photo of him. Zero-two pitch. Fouled away by office. It's days it owns is. But come anyway.
- 1:23:45Big day here on fan appreciation day. Of course, the big series with the Reds this weekend, Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:23:53Nothing else. You can come out and boo-bee-d-rose. Bouncing ball to second base. Matt Locke waits for it. Has plenty of time to throw out office. That's out number one.
- 1:24:07Jeff trying to stay ahead of the Reds in the Western Division. Come out and see if Pete Rose can keep his hitting system alive. It did. You're kidding. How long did it last? Six games. What was all the big rockets about?
- 1:24:25That's rockets. I know. Gary Matthews takes slow over of all Matthews as one of the few hits for the Braves, a single and a first.
- 1:24:39The one-oh pitch. Strike 12, one of ours. Locke and Jim Bounce. Ryan Pitcher's duo on a very beautiful afternoon at Campbell's Big Park. I thought he would at least make it to 44 games.
- 1:24:55Well, you never can tell but it was good. Paul on the strike pitch. Darned it to the left side and the whole backhand is right next to him. He'll never get him. His throw is not in time as Matthews has in several days.
- 1:25:10It's the third of the game for the Braves. He's the first with one out and Jeff Burrows is walked and lined out will be the better. Burrows is involved with Madlock and Parker.
- 1:25:24Struggle for the batting leadership. Madlock started today leading by a point over Parker and two over Burrows. Madlock robbed of a base that he's last time up his own for two. Burrows over one. Parker will be batting tonight.
- 1:25:41Throw to first base. Matthews gets back in. One to one in the top of the sixth. Three hits apiece now. Throw to first. Rather strange totals on the board. Each team with one run. Each with three hits. The Braves with three errors and the Giants with two.
- 1:26:11Matthews has his lead. He doesn't go. Burrows dribbles it back to Ullicky. Throw to second for one to first. They get two.
- 1:26:19The one to six to three double fly and here in the sixth no runs. One hit no errors and no one left off. We'll go to the bottom of the sixth in the score. The Giants one and the Braves one.
- 1:26:39Ernie Shevron. Listen Ernie I think I got battery problems. Oh hi George. Yeah well I was heading out to my bowling league this morning and while I tried to start the car it was nothing. Nothing? Well there are two common causes of that George. Oh. One is that the battery terminals between you. Oh I forgot to mention I left the lights on all night. Oh that's the other one George. It happened around midnight Ernie and when I noticed I left them on. If you knew last night George why didn't you just turn them off then? Oh I tried George but I couldn't seem to get the coat hanger around the button. It was pretty dark you know. Oh so you were lost out too. Yeah.
- 1:27:09Didn't I say that? Next time that happens George disconnect the battery right away. Yeah but finally I noticed the lights were slowly turning themselves off so I just went to bed. George I'll send Charlie over to pick up the battery for recharging. Recharge. And while it's here we'll clean the terminals and check the water level too. Earn your life Staple. Keep your battery alive and well with regular stops at Shevron. You know George you might just put that coat hanger in your glove compartment in case you get locked out again. Hey great idea Ernie. Uh huh very funny Ernie.
- 1:27:39We'll go to the bottom of the sixth inning. It will be Dwyer, Tomargo and Metzger.
- 1:27:52We'll go back for Mrs. Vernon Fisher in our giant fair out there. Mrs. Vernon Fisher from Hamilton City. You know where Hamilton City is? It's near Sacramento. Anywhere near Hamilton Air Force Base.
- 1:28:14You know it's no joke. Well that's their coffee beans. I'm not sure if Mrs. Vernon's idea or not. I used to work there. You used to work in Hamilton City? Yeah.
- 1:28:28It's near Sacramento. Any other girls still around? Jim Dwyer 0 for 2. 6. 5. Purple all 1 and all. Jim Bouten still around here in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:28:51The Lickies allow just three hits and one run. And the one run is unearned. The Lickies allow just one run and that's also unearned. Knuckler is it strikes. 1 and 1.
- 1:29:01I'm going to look up there on the board when they're advertising the prizes for the Santa Virginia All-Reece to the 5 foot loaf of French bread. The 1 and 1 pitch. Ah, purple all. Loaf of bread. Wilk Chamberlain in the middle.
- 1:29:21It's got to be scaled by now. I mean it is. If it's up there every time you look up there. No it's just the words, the letters. Oh, the letters. Playing in a five off foul.
- 1:29:31A lot of play down the right field line. 2 and 2. 1-1 ball game in the bottom of the sixth. The Giants will entertain the Reds here over the weekend. 2-2-6.
- 1:29:52Fly ball right field. Softly hit Matthews. Dotted back now. Comes back in. Makes the cut. We catch a nice quiet nap out here today in the warm sunshine because the hitters aren't making enough noise to wake you up.
- 1:30:05John Tomago who has grounded out and fly it out will be batting for Gordon C. Localta of Modesto. Ed Hulicki and Jim Boughton have silenced the bats today. Both pitching very well. Tomago takes high.
- 1:30:24The ball 1-0. What an out. Nobody on. Shifts put on against Tomago again and his only dribbler is to the left of second. It's up high for ball 2-0. Tomago is having a first in his major league career.
- 1:30:42This will be the first time anybody has ever put a shift on against him. But with Boughton. Knuckleball being a very slow one. The fielders will be out in front. Full of all 2-0 picks. Slow for ball 3. That didn't happen to Evans who blooped it down the left field line. Went for a double.
- 1:30:59Boughton has walked just two minutes. Make it three minutes. Okay I will. 3-0 pitch. Strike call 3-1. Struck out 2 in the first inning. Some total abuse. Strike out. 3-1 pitch.
- 1:31:23Bounce to the right side. Murphy has it. Boughton in time. And two minutes down.
- 1:31:31Still gone. It will bring up Roger Metsker to bat for Caffey. I don't want to risk a bounce. Caffey's last name.
- 1:31:54I bet you it's Caffey. Metsker drives the ball foul past first base. Strike 1.
- 1:32:15Now I'm going to one count to Roger Metsker batting with two out the bases. Tomorrow night, Saturday and Sunday here at Candlestick.
- 1:32:28County bench and that's a bunch. Outside for a roll. Bench and a bunch. 1-1 catch. Murphy and Morgan. Boughton. Down ball right side. Fielded by the second baseman Hubbard.
- 1:32:45Throw to Boughton in time and the side retires. Jim Boughton over and over and over. Get that one. No earth, no hit, no errors. No one left on. Another hand for Jim Boughton. End of pitch.
- 1:32:58The score is 5-1.
- 1:33:16That could be an indication that Jim Boughton has done all the pitching he's going to do in this one. Boughton with an outstanding effort. The Giants to only three hits. May still be in there. We'll have to wait and see.
- 1:33:29Boughton to have a fine season. A double A ball in the minor leagues. Skip triple A and up to the majors and the Atlanta Braves. Got smoked by the Dodgers but he's done a fine job against the Giants in his second appearance this year.
- 1:33:46Another pitch. Bergen Ball is in there called strike. Nothing in one on Joe Nolan who is 0-2. He has a couple of ground outs. Batting average of 2-51. He has four homers and 21 RBI. Love being battered.
- 1:33:59So Lucky says yes. The big guy delivers again. Nolan checks his swing on his inside fastball. 1-1. Giants 1, Atlanta 1 just getting started in the seventh inning.
- 1:34:22Lucky says yes again. Here's a 1-1 pitch. It's just outside. Hit miss by Mott. 2-1.
- 1:34:34And Lucky sets the deal again. He does swing and a miss for the fastball line. 2-2. Okay guys, only two strikeouts in the game. You got office and Murphy.
- 1:34:55Here's the next pitch. There's a breaking ball bouncing in and the count goes to 3-2. Don't forget, Fan Appreciation Day on September 24th.
- 1:35:05Glad to be here. Giants planning all kinds of celebrations and gifts. Here's the 3-2 pitch. Inside, Maynard Lowe, ball four.
- 1:35:16Has won't only hit second man. Nolan, the leadoff man, is on base in the seventh inning. Now Dale Murphy, the batter.
- 1:35:31Dad, Hulikki and Jim Bouton have been in total command. Each one is unearned. Ray's got theirs in the second and the Giants got even in the third. Dale Murphy is 0-2. He is safely forward on Hulikki's error and later scores.
- 1:35:47He's swinging and a miss. There goes the run of the throw in the center field. It's wide. Madlion diving to his left. They will knock the ball down and keep it right there. Give Nolan a stolen base. Got a big jump on Hulikki.
- 1:36:05Nolan is now in scoring position with a count of one strike on Dale Murphy. Next pitch on the way is a comebacker under Hulikki's love into center field.
- 1:36:23Nolan, now they third. He's going to score. Here comes the throw. It's cut off. Livey tried to cut it off. It got by him. It was sealed in by Tomargo and going to second is Dale Murphy. The Braves have taken a 2-1 lead.
- 1:36:37RBI single to Dale Murphy. Remember yesterday's service stations when you got much more for your money than just a tank of gas? Your Cameron dealer remembers and next time you stop by, you will too. The Walkers stolen base and RBI single.
- 1:36:53The Braves have taken a 2-1 lead. Now Glenn Hubbard, the Atlanta second baseman up here. Here's the pitch. Blowin' outside, ball one. Ball hit directly up the middle of Hulikki.
- 1:37:08Got the glove down but not far enough as the ball went under his glove and over second base into center field. Nolan able to score. Here's the pitch on the way. He's in there on the inside corner. One and one. A night of two runs on four hits. Giant one run on three hits and two errors.
- 1:37:24Right hander and left hander warming up in the giant bullpen. Here's the pitch. It's front and foul. One and two on Glenn Hubbard with a run in and Murphy at second base. Nobody down.
- 1:37:44Right hander is Randy Moffett warming up. It looks like Phil Nasdu is left hander. Swing and a miss. Good heartbreaking slider. Got Hubbard on strike.
- 1:37:59Number one in the seventh inning. That'll bring up Rob Gilbreth. Hulikki getting his third strike out. At night of two and the giant one, we're in the seventh.
- 1:38:21Rob Gilbreth is one for two. Here's a ground out and he's tripled. Here's a pitch just outside, ball one. Gilbreth had a triple with one out in the fifth.
- 1:38:34Stand with Brandon. Look at time to keep the score right where it is. Two to one in favor of the Atlanta Braves. Big right hander says yes. Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss.
- 1:38:52One and one. Bob Beale in the on deck circle. He will be batting for Jim Poulton. Here's a one-one to us. Swing and a miss again.
- 1:39:06One ball and two strikes. Some of the fans are not too happy about the fact that Poulton is leaving the game. If the Braves can hang on, Poulton will get the victory.
- 1:39:23Here's a one-two delivery. He swung on and bowled away. That'll be out of play on the right side. And the count stays at a ball and two strikes.
- 1:39:44Look at getting his sign. He says no. Now he says yes. And the one-two pitch. Swing and a miss. He got him on a fast ball. A couple of strikeouts for Huluki in the 7-52.
- 1:39:56Now Bob Beale will come up to hit for Jim Poulton. You might be able to hear the reaction in the fans. Fans here were enjoying. Jim Poulton is doing a fine job.
- 1:40:11Bob Beale left hand batter.
- 1:40:19This hit in the game yesterday in the 11th inning and ground it out.
- 1:40:23Pitch down the way. Beale takes high away. Ball one.
- 1:40:30Beale has a batting average of 255. Switch batter.
- 1:40:35235 is a left-hander. 333 is a right-hander. He has one home run, 15 RBI.
- 1:40:43Off speed is in there for a call. Strike two. Good breaking ball.
- 1:40:50One and two on Bob Beale.
- 1:40:55His one home run has come as a left-hander. And 10 of his 15 RBI's on the left side. Breaking ball in there.
- 1:41:03That was strike two.
- 1:41:12Right-hander getting his sign again. Murphy gets his lead at second.
- 1:41:17Here's a bit. Fast ball just outside. Two and two.
- 1:41:23Ladder with two runs on four hits, three errors. Giants one run only, three hits and two errors. So looking at two-two pitch on the way. Breaking ball is just inside. Beale able to check his swing.
- 1:41:34And he goes all the way on the pitch batter.
- 1:41:50Here's a three-two delivery. He is outside.
- 1:41:54Beale draws a base on balls. Now with a couple of men on base and two downs, Jerry Royster will come up and swing a bat.
- 1:42:01Walk number three, given up by a lucky.
- 1:42:05Jim Fountain with a two-to-one lead at the moment. And as I mentioned, his embrace can hang on. Jim Fountain will get the victory. If so, it would be his first victory since July of 1970 when he beat the Giants. Eight years ago, almost today.
- 1:42:27Swing and a foul back. Nothing in one.
- 1:42:32Fountain is the guy who hasn't beaten the Giants in eight years.
- 1:42:37And might do it again here.
- 1:42:45So he's getting a sign again. The right hander delivers. Swing and a line drive. That will be a base hit to left center field.
- 1:42:51Murphy coming in to score. Kuhl is fielding. Going to third is Beale and he's in there safely.
- 1:42:57And Royster winds up on second.
- 1:43:05Snow came in towards third and Royster, seeing them play directly in front of him, went to second. He will be given a double.
- 1:43:14And the RBI, the Braves, have taken a three-to-one lead.
- 1:43:18And now the batter will be rolling to offense.
- 1:43:24The offense is over and he has a couple of ground outs and a strikeout.
- 1:43:28They're rolling at a 2-53, nine home runs and 37 RBI.
- 1:43:32Three-to-one Atlanta in the seven-pinning offense will be watched intentionally and it will pitch to Gary Matthews where the base is loaded.
- 1:43:41This will be the fourth walk given up by O'Lucky.
- 1:43:45There's one intentional.
- 1:43:51So the walk to Nolan, a stolen base, RBI single by Murphy.
- 1:43:55Then after a couple of strikeouts, a walk to Pop Beale.
- 1:43:59Then the RBI double by Royster.
- 1:44:01Offense is being watched intentionally to load the bases and Gary Matthews will come up.
- 1:44:13Matthews in the game is two for three.
- 1:44:17Had a single and a stolen base in the first. He's lined out in the third and can't kill a single in the sixth.
- 1:44:31Base is full of Braves. Two down in the seven-pinning and a couple of runs in.
- 1:44:37Right hander from a windup now. Here's the pitch. Matthews takes high, ball one, offense ball.
- 1:44:43Matthews ducking away from that one and dropping his pass.
- 1:44:49Here's a one-nothing pitch. Swing and a miss is a good fastball. One and one.
- 1:44:59Matthews coming into the season at two grand slams.
- 1:45:04Swing and a miss at a good slider on the outside. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:45:14Right hander in front of Gary Matthews. Here's a windup and a one-two delivery.
- 1:45:18Swing and a miss. He got him on strike.
- 1:45:20So look, he's slacked off the side in the seventh inning, but he gives up two runs.
- 1:45:24Now, the total of only two atlanteans. Two walks. Make that three walks in the inning.
- 1:45:30And three man left on base. We go to the bottom of the seventh with Atlanta leading three to one.
- 1:45:37Sure, later. Love's gonna get you.
- 1:45:40Harold?
- 1:45:41Yes, sir? You're a bright guy.

- 1:48:22Herndon takes low and inside, two to one.
- 1:48:25Larry Herndon in with a two and one count.
- 1:48:28And Stoke delivers.
- 1:48:29Check swing has been near a golf strike.
- 1:48:32A fast ball on the knees at the outside corner.
- 1:48:35The count is even up with two and two.
- 1:48:38Herndon hitting 261.
- 1:48:40He has one home run, 31 on the outside.
- 1:48:43He's got a little bit of a lead on the outside.
- 1:48:46He's got a little bit of a lead on the outside.
- 1:48:49He's got a little bit of a lead on the outside.
- 1:48:52He's got a little bit of a lead on the outside.
- 1:48:55He's got a little bit of a lead on the outside.
- 1:48:57Here's a pitch.
- 1:48:58Breaking ball is dropping foul on the left side.
- 1:49:00Count stays at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:49:03The only giant scoring in the game, the run was unearned in the second inning on a walk to mad-lock.
- 1:49:09Couple of errors.
- 1:49:12and a fly ball off the bat of Mike Ivey.
- 1:49:16And that has been it.
- 1:49:22Left hander says no a couple of times.
- 1:49:24Now he says, okay, I like that one.
- 1:49:26Here's the next pitch.
- 1:49:27Swing run, and they've got him on a rising fastball.
- 1:49:29It's one of ball three.
- 1:49:31Turned in out number one in the seventh inning.
- 1:49:33Now Bill Matlock.
- 1:49:35Matlock in this one is 0 for 2.
- 1:49:40He's struck out.
- 1:49:41He has walked.
- 1:49:42He has lined out.
- 1:49:43Rot of a hit in the fifth inning by Rod Gilbert.
- 1:49:46At the minute of time, he catches third.
- 1:49:49So Matlock is 0 for 2.
- 1:49:51Came in with a batting average of 316.
- 1:49:54At the moment, hitting 315.
- 1:49:57With 15 home runs and 42 RBI.
- 1:50:00Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:01Matlock checks on a breaking ball.

- 1:50:21Here's a one nothing pitch.
- 1:50:23Here's a breaking ball grounded foul into the Atlanta dugout.
- 1:50:27One and one.
- 1:50:29Beautiful day here at Candles Peak.
- 1:50:31Tomorrow night Cincinnati Reds in for the first of three weekend games.

- 1:51:33One one.
- 1:51:45Left hander against left hander.
- 1:51:47Here's a one one pitch.
- 1:51:49Swing and a miss is a good sample for all sailing in on Whitfield's jams if anyone runs through it.
- 1:51:54One and two.
- 1:52:05Next pitch, Whitfield swings and he grabs it right side.
- 1:52:08Lunging stop by Hubbard.
- 1:52:09Spin, throws and catches.
- 1:52:11Great play by Hubbard.
- 1:52:13Breezy far to his left.
- 1:52:14That's fielding it on the edge of the outfield turf, spinning all the way around, getting rid of it and getting Whitfield by his step.
- 1:52:21Now the Giants go down in order in the seven pinnings.
- 1:52:25We go to the eighth with the score at lattice three and the Giants one.

- 1:53:58He will bat number two in Whitfield's part.
- 1:54:04Randy Moffett in relief of that, Hillergeer went seven and he gave him three runs on five as he walked four and struck out five.
- 1:54:13Moffett would have been bothered by a sore shoulder.
- 1:54:20He came up with that sore shoulder in Atlanta and he has it pinned in.
- 1:54:29Randy is making his 64th appearance. He is 8-4. His ERA is 2.24. He has a total of 74 and two thirds. He has given up 27 runs on 72 hits.
- 1:54:43Burrows swings and lifts a fly ball on the right field line. Dwyer coming in will play it on one hop.
- 1:54:47Burrows rod these first. Now the ball getting away from Dwyer. Burrows is on his way to third. Here's a throw from Matlock. It is not in time.
- 1:54:58You see how they rule that. A blooper down the right field line. Dwyer came racing into the infield, pulled up, decided to play the ball on one hop.
- 1:55:06It bounced over his head and Dwyer had trouble picking it up.
- 1:55:12That will be how they rule that.
- 1:55:16They have given Dwyer an error. It's either a single and a two base error or a double and a one base error.
- 1:55:32They give Burrows a double and give Dwyer the error.
- 1:55:40Joe Nolan takes a tall strike on the inside corner.
- 1:55:47Oh, there he is. Pulled out of there.
- 1:55:52Randy Mopper, the infield playing in. 3-1 Atlanta in front. Here's a pitch that's inside. 1-1.

- 1:56:19Atlanta 3 is a giant 1 in the eighth inning.
- 1:56:28Here's a pitch. Low on inside again.
- 1:56:333-1 on Joe Nolan. Tomargo out to have a talk with Moffett.
- 1:56:37Giant 2 sets the defense for you. Darrell Evans is third. Roger Metzger is short.
- 1:56:42Matlock is second. Mike Ivey is first.
- 1:56:45John Tomargo back of the plate. Cruz, Herndon, and Dwyer in the outfield.
- 1:56:53Moffett ready. Into his motion, a 3-1 pitch. It's one-on and one-hop to Ivey.
- 1:56:58He will hold the runner down to his knees to feel and steps on the back.
- 1:57:02Good play by Mike Ivey. His shot hit directly to his right.
- 1:57:06Mike able to come up with it on one-hop and make the play.
- 1:57:11Nolan unable to get the ball out of the infield. One away. Now Dale Murphy to batter.
- 1:57:18Murphy who is 1-3, who is safely aboard on Saluki's error in the second.
- 1:57:23He's struck out in the fourth and he's single in the seventh inning and scored on the double by Jerry Royster.
- 1:57:29Atlanta 3 to Giant 1. Moffett and Tomargo converging.
- 1:57:34We've Glenn Hubbard due up next.
- 1:57:38And the Braves already in front 3-1. Might not be a bad idea to pitch around Murphy.
- 1:57:42He's better walking intentionally. We're going to pitch to him.
- 1:57:47First base open.
- 1:57:50Cruz on his third. Here's the pitch on the way. Murphy takes low and away.
- 1:57:54Backhanders by Tomargo. It's 1-0.
- 1:58:00Murphy with a 23 homerun, 77 RBI. Danger.
- 1:58:071-0 pitch.
- 1:58:09High inside, 2-0.
- 1:58:23Moffett's 2-0 pitch is swung on and Tomargo back out of play. 2-1.
- 1:58:28Again the Giants' infield playing and if they can they will try to get Burrows and have to play.
- 1:58:34Or hold in there. The offfield deep and slightly right.
- 1:58:39Leah Turnedon is in center field.
- 1:58:42A lot of the three runs on six hits and three errors.
- 1:58:45Giants one run on only three hits and three errors.
- 1:58:52Moffett's 2-1 pitch on the way.
- 1:58:54Twana come backer Moffett holding the runner at third and is throwing off Murphy.
- 1:58:59Good play for Moffett.
- 1:59:04Randall using good reaction. Able to flank that one down and get Murphy at first.
- 1:59:09Two down and that will bring up Glenn Hubbard.
- 1:59:14If Moffett had not been able to field that one that would have been a base hit up the middle.
- 1:59:23Hubbard again so what he was 0-2.
- 1:59:27Here's the pitch of Slider in there for strike one.
- 1:59:31It was his suicide squeeze run that gave Atlanta 1-0 lead in the second inning.
- 1:59:37Since then he has played out his truck out.
- 1:59:41Next pitch on the way. Line drive, softly hit in the center field for a base hit.
- 1:59:46Murphy comes in to score and the Braves have now taken a 4-1 lead.
- 1:59:54Not Murphy I should say. Jeff Burrows.
- 1:59:58That's a nice pitch runner in there for Burrows. Never even saw him come in.
- 2:00:04Barry Pennell had come into the game.
- 2:00:07So the Braves have taken a 4-1 lead. Pennell comes in to score on the single by Hubbard and that will bring up Rod Gilbreth.
- 2:00:14Here's the pitch. Look out high and inside under his chin.
- 2:00:19Gilbreth is 1-3. He had a triple in the fifth inning.
- 2:00:25Giants just can't seem to snap out of this.
- 2:00:29Trail 4-1 in the eighth inning.
- 2:00:34Ivy playing out of the back of the first holding Hubbard close.
- 2:00:37Hubbard with his second RBI of the game and his eighth of the season.
- 2:00:41Here's the pitch. It's high, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:00:58High and inside again under his chin.
- 2:01:01Gilbreth talking to play down fire Paul Pryor saying hey what's going on here?
- 2:01:06Did he get a warning or what? Moffett has come inside three times.
- 2:01:14Twice under his chin.
- 2:01:16Here's the 3-0 delivery. He walked him on four pitches.
- 2:01:19That was a couple of men on base.
- 2:01:22Drake Scope will be the batter.
- 2:01:25First walk given up by Moffett.
- 2:01:34Runners on first and second with two down and Drake Scope.
- 2:01:40The throw is left handed and that's right handed.
- 2:01:45Scope getting 286 this season.
- 2:01:49It was only two for seven with no home runs, no RBI.
- 2:01:56Moffett getting his time. A couple of men on base.
- 2:01:59Here's the pitch. Scope swings and fouls it back over the screen. 0-1.
- 2:02:06Gray has got one in the second. They had a two in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
- 2:02:10Giants got their only run in the third inning.
- 2:02:18Next pitch, swung on and grounded on one hop to Darrell Evans who seals at the bag, steps on it for the fourth on Hubbard and Adley tires it's eyes.
- 2:02:28But in the eighth inning the Braves get one more on two hits.
- 2:02:31One giant error and a couple of men left on base.
- 2:02:33We go to the bottom of the eighth inning. It is Atlanta 4 and the Giants 1.
- 2:02:39It's time to let it go.
- 2:03:09You know what the land of the birds is like that he's made here.
- 2:03:17When she's a bird, I'm a bird.
- 2:03:21She's a land of birds.
- 2:03:25When she's a bird, I'm a bird.
- 2:03:29You can't let her go.
- 2:03:33When she's a bird, I'm a bird.
- 2:03:37And I'm a bird.
- 2:03:45Here at the bottom of the eighth inning, Atlanta leading 4-1. The Braves, Barry Bennell stays in the game to play left field.
- 2:03:54Hoffman stays in the center, Gary Matthews in the right.
- 2:03:59He'll play the third, Royce to it short, Hubbard still in second, Sal Murky is first, and Joe Nolan back in the play.
- 2:04:07Great scope, left hander by the work his second inning of relief.
- 2:04:10He will pitch to Ivy, Evans, and Cruz with the Braves in front 4-1.
- 2:04:15Mike Ivy is 0-2. He has the only RBI for the Giants.
- 2:04:21He got that on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
- 2:04:24Mike hitting 3-10 coming into the game.
- 2:04:28Home runs now with a total of 50 RBI's.
- 2:04:35Skokie in the relief of Jim Bowden.
- 2:04:38Ivy checks on a breaking ball as low, ball one.
- 2:04:43Bowden's game to win, and right now, the luckiest game to lose.
- 2:04:493-1 Atlanta, 4-1.
- 2:04:52Here's a 1-0 pitch, a golf strike on the outside corner at the D.
- 2:04:571-1.
- 2:05:08Might have been the 1-1 for his swing, and in the midst he blew a fastball by,
- 2:05:11and there Ivy a little behind on the swing, it's 1-2.
- 2:05:26South end of getting his sign again as Ivy digs in.
- 2:05:284-1 Atlanta in front.
- 2:05:30Here's the pitch. Ivy takes the call, strike three.
- 2:05:34Wild way in the eighth inning, now 0-11.
- 2:05:37Giants not very hitters today.
- 2:05:41The way things are at the ballpark today and yesterday brings back memories of 1977 and 1976, the atmosphere.
- 2:05:51Skokie getting his second strike out, now 0-11.
- 2:05:54Darrell is 1-3, had a bloop double down the left field line in the fifth inning.
- 2:05:58He's also flied out and grounded us.
- 2:06:02Darrell takes low for ball one.
- 2:06:05On deck is A.T. Cruz.
- 2:06:10Atlanta 4-1, 7 hits, 3 errors.
- 2:06:14Giants 1-1, 3 hits, 3 errors.
- 2:06:20Skokie says yes.
- 2:06:23Here's the pitch. Evans takes low and outside, 2-0.
- 2:06:37Very relaxing afternoon here at campus.
- 2:06:402-0 delivery is low for ball three.
- 2:06:443-0 on 0-11.
- 2:06:46In the bottom of the eighth inning with one away and the Brazen front 4-1.
- 2:06:50The type is Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:06:53In town all weekend.
- 2:06:58There's a call, strike three and one. Darrell takes all the way.
- 2:07:02Three balls and one strike on the Giants third baseman.
- 2:07:08Darrell who doesn't figure to be around in 1979, he has yet to sign a contract playing out his option.
- 2:07:15Along with Jim Barr.
- 2:07:18Here's the 3-1 delivery is low and outside.
- 2:07:20He's got the base on balls with one away.
- 2:07:22Now A.T. Cruz.
- 2:07:26First walk given up by Craig Soap.
- 2:07:29You don't have to have a hard day on the job.
- 2:07:31Sit back and relax with Budweiser.
- 2:07:34You know that's the perfect way to end a hectic day.
- 2:07:36Just you and the king of fear.
- 2:07:40A.T. Cruz, one for two, a double, is also fouled out and walked.
- 2:07:46Cruz with seven home runs and 30 RBI.
- 2:07:50Devin's getting his lead.
- 2:07:52Here's a pitch on the way to Cruz, a breaking ball down too low.
- 2:07:56One and O. On deck is Jim Dwyer.
- 2:08:02After the Cincinnati series the Giants will be on their way to San Diego.
- 2:08:06Three games back here against Houston the following Friday for four games.
- 2:08:11Then the San Diego Padres on the 26th and 27th to close out their home schedule.
- 2:08:16Here's a pitch on the way. Cruz takes a fast ball just outside.
- 2:08:20Two and O.
- 2:08:22And a double header against the Astros on the 24th.
- 2:08:24It's fan appreciation day.
- 2:08:39Cruz away at first.
- 2:08:41Skok looks it in and now he comes home.
- 2:08:43Cruz takes a call strike.
- 2:08:45Fast ball two and one.
- 2:08:54The Giants close out the season in the Astrodome with three games against the Astros on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- 2:09:01The final game of the season will be on October 1st unless they catch the Dodgers.
- 2:09:09All the way down the right field line it will be drifting into the season out of place.
- 2:09:35The first hand already is here's a pitch. Breaking ball is in the dirt.
- 2:09:39Three and two.
- 2:09:40Giants seven games behind the Dodgers in the Western Division.
- 2:09:43They're not out of it yet mathematically but the only trouble is the Giants aren't showing any signs of coming to life at all.
- 2:09:52They're playing like they've lost interest.
- 2:09:57Here's a pitch again.
- 2:09:58And Grout is shortstop. Could be two to second for one. Hubbard's relay double play.
- 2:10:05And maybe even losing more interest.
- 2:10:09In the eighth inning no runs, no hits, no errors, no one left out at the end of 8-4 to 1 Atlanta.
- 2:10:15Bernie Shevron.
- 2:10:16I heard he closed.
- 2:10:17I have a person who ordered a change in the order.
- 2:10:19Well listen I can do that for you George.
- 2:10:21Now I'm taking notes.
- 2:10:22Okay you get some oil and maybe an Atlas oil filter. You see a clean oil filter is just as important as clean oil.
- 2:10:29And some gasless oil filter.
- 2:10:32Change into old clothes you never want to see again.
- 2:10:34Old clothes.
- 2:10:36Get a wrench for the oil filter.
- 2:10:38What kind of wrench?
- 2:10:39Well take a guess George.
- 2:10:40Oil filter wrench.
- 2:10:41Have a pan ready to catch all that old oil.
- 2:10:43Old oil? What do I do with it?
- 2:10:45Well be thinking about that George.
- 2:10:47Open the hood and unscrew the oil filter. Coat the rubber part of the new filter with some grease.
- 2:10:53Oh you sure know your stuff Bernie.
- 2:10:54Then screw the new filter.
- 2:10:55No Bernie I'll bring it right over.
- 2:10:57It takes just minutes to get an oil change. I'm a quality Atlas oil filter at the Shevron along your way today.
- 2:11:04Sorry was I boring you George?
- 2:11:07If you were a baseball team you'd be the Washington Senators remember them?
- 2:11:22We played eight here at Cattle's Dig.
- 2:11:24It might have four runs, seven hits and three errors.
- 2:11:26The Giants with one run on three hits and three errors.
- 2:11:29And here to take you the rest of the way, bring you the ninth inning is Lon Simmons.
- 2:11:33Top of the order for the Braves. It'll be Royce Shutt, office in Matthews against Randy Moffitt.
- 2:11:41Braves breaking open a one-one ball game with two in the seventh and one in the eighth.
- 2:11:46A very happy man at the moment and maybe very nervous.
- 2:11:49Jim Bolton and the Braves run out hoping that Craig Skokin close it out and give him his first major league victory since the 1970s strike call.
- 2:12:00The last major league win against the Giants on July 11th, 1970 in one inning of relief.
- 2:12:07Moffitt's one strike to it.
- 2:12:09High and inside, 12-1, one and one.
- 2:12:17Moffitt who is making his first appearance just entering his arm in Atlanta.
- 2:12:23Pop up right side, Ivy, glasses down, waiting.
- 2:12:26Fair territory, Mexico, that's out number one.
- 2:12:31Roll it off it.
- 2:12:33Hole for three up here against Moffitt.
- 2:12:36Four to one, the Braves lead.
- 2:12:40Can't help but rooting for Jim Poulson.
- 2:12:44Wish he would have come against another ball club but he has to admire his comeback.
- 2:12:52Popped up foul, Evans is playable, makes the catch and two men are down.
- 2:12:59Two of the softest little pop-ups you're ever going to see.
- 2:13:04And now Gary Matthews who has single twice in four trips.
- 2:13:08Giants baseball brought to you in part by Champions Park Blood Company.
- 2:13:11Over 34 million people have switched to Champions Park Blood.
- 2:13:20Now, don't play them by the ball, fire one, take a look at the baseball, you'll give another one to Moffitt.
- 2:13:30And Gary Matthews steps up here.
- 2:13:32Fouls, just three outs away from getting his first major league victory since 1970.
- 2:13:41Matthews winds it to backhand catch by Ivy but he trapped it and then he throws to Moffitt in time to get Matthews.
- 2:13:50Ivy hopes to take Moffitt alive with that throw.
- 2:13:54Ivy thought that he'd caught the ball as he made a diving backhand stab at the line drive.
- 2:13:58First base number, Jerry J. doesn't know you've trapped it.
- 2:14:01And then Ivy whistles a throw to Moffitt and gets Matthews.
- 2:14:06A one, two, three inning and now we go to the bottom of the ninth and Jim Fountain sitting on the edge of the seat
- 2:14:16wondering if Craig Scott can win it or save it.
- 2:14:20As we go to the ninth and it's the end of eight and a half.
- 2:14:24It is four to one for the Warriors.
- 2:14:26Will I remember when I was a kid, I was a kid too, and so was Matthews, and then I knew, I figured out it's a drive and then my 50-cent on the board, yeah, yeah.
- 2:14:37Hey Rocky, you said my board's better than your board.
- 2:14:42Well yeah, what do you got that thing?
- 2:14:44Yeah, well I got a new set of champion clubs.
- 2:14:46Oh, well, hey Mr. Manage, remember I gotta get my duck skull turned right?
- 2:14:50Hey Rocky, I bet my thing don't get better mileage than yesterday though.
- 2:15:01Yeah, tell me what do you got in that thing?
- 2:15:03Yeah, well I got a new set of champion clubs.
- 2:15:05Oh, wow.
- 2:15:06Hey, I gotta split, I just remembered I gotta get a head transplant, right?
- 2:15:09Yeah, I got a new set of champion clubs.
- 2:15:32Well, I got a new set of champion clubs.
- 2:15:39Okay, Garber will come on to put the ninth inning for the Braves.
- 2:16:02Going back, this is Garber with four wins and five defeats.
- 2:16:11Delivers outside to Jim Dwyer, Tamargo, and Metzger.
- 2:16:19Against Garber, the right-hander delivers, line drive, right field, Matthews going back, still going, leaps,
- 2:16:25and makes a great one-handed catch.
- 2:16:27Collides with the fence and comes up holding the baseball.
- 2:16:31Spectacular catch by Gary Matthews.
- 2:16:34On a drive over his head by Dwyer, Matthews raced to the barrier, his back to the infield,
- 2:16:42leaped in the air, made a one-handed catch, collided with the post,
- 2:16:46hit the ground and came up holding the ball.
- 2:16:49It shows that he's held on and Dwyer's robbed.
- 2:16:53So on number one, John Tamargo will be the batter.
- 2:16:55So maybe the Spades are smiling on Jim Bowden today,
- 2:16:59but they did so very well during sixth inning.
- 2:17:02Now they leaping catch to prevent the Giants from getting something started
- 2:17:06with the first batter up here, and Tamargo takes the ball once.
- 2:17:11Garber's one-oh pitch, a strike, one-and-one.
- 2:17:14Tamargo batting left-handed against the right-hander.
- 2:17:18Garber, this really takes Atlanta off the hook, even if Bob were not to win this one.
- 2:17:25Garber looks rocked about, got a chance to pitch against the Dodgers with a pen and race on line drive.
- 2:17:30Bow, hit down the right field line, one and two.
- 2:17:36There probably will be no murmurs at all.
- 2:17:40Now that Jim has stepped in here and pitched sixth inning,
- 2:17:44he'll have nowhere to run on just three hits.
- 2:17:50Tamargo follows it slowly down the first-base side, and it stays at one and two.
- 2:17:56Jim Bowden now two outs away from recording his first major league victory since 1970.
- 2:18:02He can thank Gary Matthews for a brilliant catch robbing Dwyer.
- 2:18:08And Garber into the wind at the right-hander, who shows the numbers on his back to the hitter.
- 2:18:13He delivers low and inside for a ball, two and two.
- 2:18:18It's a shame, maybe although he's probably won't notice that difference.
- 2:18:25It's a shame that one of the candles to big crowds was here today to watch him.
- 2:18:29Two-two pitch followed away to the right.
- 2:18:31That makes the crowd made up of enthusiasm for Bowden,
- 2:18:34with the lacked of size as they were giving him a standing ovation each time he came off the mound.
- 2:18:43He plays with Dave Rosberg as a two-two couch to Tamargo with one out base is empty.
- 2:18:49Bottom of the ninth.
- 2:18:51Tamargo follows it at the plate, stays at two and two.
- 2:18:57Garber was the winning pitcher in yesterday's 12-inning ball game.
- 2:19:01The Giants, I don't know if it has anything to do with it or not,
- 2:19:06but he's won one ball game since it was announced that the radio stations were going to change.
- 2:19:13Two-two pitch.
- 2:19:14Ground to the right side, an easy play for Murphy.
- 2:19:17He will beat Tamargo to the bag in two minutes.
- 2:19:22Right here, let's pause for station identification.
- 2:19:25This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 2:19:29Now, Team Nelson, weekly warnings on KSFO 560 San Francisco.
- 2:19:40Turok.
- 2:19:46Turok.
- 2:19:48Metzger the batter.
- 2:19:50He's 0-2.
- 2:19:51That's left-handed against Garber.
- 2:19:53About just one out away from recording his first victory in the 1970s.
- 2:20:00Garber trying to get it for him outside for a ball.
- 2:20:04At third base, Gilford plays up close.
- 2:20:07Fanelli, left fielder, shallow.
- 2:20:10Strike call.
- 2:20:11So is offense and center.
- 2:20:19Metzger waiting.
- 2:20:20Garber gets the target, the pitch.
- 2:20:23Bounce slowly towards shortstop.
- 2:20:25Royster charges.
- 2:20:26Has it.
- 2:20:27Throws the first.
- 2:20:28He got him.
- 2:20:29And the side retired, Jim Fountain, gets his first major league victory since 1970.
- 2:20:36And that last major league win was against the Giants on July 11th of 1970,
- 2:20:41a game in which he pitched freely.
- 2:20:43Fountain is the winner here today.
- 2:20:45The Braves win it 4-1, and we'll have the final totals for you in just one minute.
- 2:21:05Get ready for National Chevy Week America.

- 2:21:57the Giants 1-run, 3 hits, 3 errors, and 7 men left on base.
- 2:22:03But the big story is that Jim Fountain is the winner.
- 2:22:07He is now 1-1.
- 2:22:09It's 1978 season at Flicke.
- 2:22:12The loser is 8-9, and Fountain wins his first game since July 11, 1970.
- 2:22:21And it was against the Giants, 21 that last one,
- 2:22:24for his last major league victory before he went into retirement.
- 2:22:30It was against the Giants, and his first victory after he comes out
- 2:22:34is against the Giants in the major league.
