Transcript
- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a very special episode of Two
- 0:11Shot Tuesday. It is our annual Super Bowl
- 0:14Rundown. My name is Jason Riley, with me
- 0:16as always, Barry T Nixon, and as always for the Super Bowl
- 0:20Rundown show, Craig Zabbits. Gentlemen, how are you doing?
- 0:24Fantastic, Jay. Yeah, fabulous.
- 0:26Like that game I'm doing? Fabulous.
- 0:28Yeah, well, don't, don't, don't bury the lead yet.
- 0:30Craig Zabbits, we're ready. We are ready for this year's
- 0:33show. Nice.
- 0:34Let me tell you something. This is what we call our catch
- 0:37and release episode. It happens every year when we do
- 0:40the Super Bowl. Super Bowl air just yesterday on
- 0:43Sunday, February 8th. We are recording Monday,
- 0:46February 9th. This is fresh in our minds and
- 0:48we are releasing Tuesday, February 10th.
- 0:50Nothing short of a miracle here at Two Shot Tuesday.
- 0:53Gentlemen, we have a format on this show, so why don't we get
- 0:56started? There's a theme tonight, Barry.
- 0:57Why don't you start us off with our theme?
- 0:59Well, the theme is sobriety, and after a very boozy weekend, it's
- 1:04exactly what the doctor ordered. I'm having some nail gene water.
- 1:08Delicious. Craig, I'm having because if
- 1:10we're talking football, I'm having a near beer.
- 1:13I'm going to have a partake, A partake ale.
- 1:16Ale. Yes, nice beer.
- 1:19I am having a Fuse 0 sugar iced tea that I like to have on
- 1:23occasion. So gentlemen, thank you for
- 1:25joining us once again, Craig Zabbits.
- 1:27Cheers. Guys.
- 1:32Here's what I thought we would do.
- 1:33We would tackle this in sequence.
- 1:35One is Super Bowl prep. Then we'll talk about the game
- 1:38itself, and then we'll touch on the halftime show.
- 1:41You guys OK with that format? All right, why don't we?
- 1:44Why don't we? Craig, since you're our visiting
- 1:46guest here once again for this exciting episode, how did you
- 1:49get yourselves yourself prepped for this exciting game once?
- 1:54The once the bills, my beloved bills lost in the heart, that
- 1:58heartbreaker, I went into hibernation and denial.
- 2:00Yeah, I wanted to hiding, but I emerged, I emerged from the
- 2:05darkness and and I got back on the football saddle as a
- 2:09Seahawks one game fan. So I channeled my, I channeled
- 2:13my, my, my Patriots, we'll call it, you know, my passion for
- 2:22watching him lose. Channel that.
- 2:23Yeah, Become a bit of a Seahawks man, then sat back, got some
- 2:27great food ready. Not as good as your nachos,
- 2:29which I think you'll talk about soon.
- 2:30And then what did you? Get into it.
- 2:32What did you get for your prep? Wings we got.
- 2:34We did. We had, we had.
- 2:34The kids came over the kids. One of the swimmable parties
- 2:36with 13 people over here yesterday, nine children, 9
- 2:39kids, that's we did. Wings we did.
- 2:41Cosmic chicken Nuggets Station. Can you believe there's cosmic
- 2:44chicken Nuggets? We did.
- 2:45What are those? They they are chicken Nuggets in
- 2:48the shape of spaceships. They were.
- 2:50They can actually buy those. We did that.
- 2:52We did weight off. The chicken we did.
- 2:54Chips, we did all of the things that you just shouldn't feed
- 2:57kids at 6:00 at night, but we did it and we had a great time.
- 3:01So yeah, amazing, really fun event.
- 3:03Lifted our spirits. Will you do that once again?
- 3:06One, one question Will you do that again?
- 3:08Have the kids over. Yeah, we're going to have.
- 3:11We. Yeah, we do the.
- 3:12Absolutely. It was great fun.
- 3:13A bunch of dads came by, so of course, you know, you got to
- 3:16crack open a couple real beers. Yeah.
- 3:18And we had a good time. They just played downstairs and
- 3:21about five of us watched the game.
- 3:22So it was really fun. It was really fun.
- 3:25Yeah. Nice.
- 3:26That's how we got ready. Barry, talk to us about how you
- 3:28got ready. I see.
- 3:29I see a kind of mellow coming out of a busy, heavy weekend.
- 3:34All right. It was a it was a very involved
- 3:36weekend, very, very involved prep.
- 3:39Not really much mentally other than I choose who joined the
- 3:42Seahawks fandom for one day. But it wasn't it was for a
- 3:46different reason. My late friend, that was his a
- 3:50favorite sports team and if he were with us today, he would
- 3:53have absolutely been thrilled at the result.
- 3:56So I thought, OK, even though I have a Patriots jersey and
- 3:58usually that's how it shakes out for me, whatever a garment I
- 4:02have of the team appearing in the big game is the one that I
- 4:05will root for, obviously. But this time I didn't.
- 4:08I went for the Seahawks. In terms of food, yeah, we did
- 4:11the chili and we did some bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers, a
- 4:14couple beers. My friend Chris Whitby, friend
- 4:16of ours, friend of the show came by and yeah, there were no kids
- 4:20and no other dads. It was perfect.
- 4:22It was exactly the kind of place I wanted to watch with adults
- 4:26only. No screaming except from us.
- 4:29And that's, you know, sometimes it's fun to hear grown men
- 4:31scream. Yeah.
- 4:32And. There's a lot of that going on,
- 4:33especially during the halftime, but we'll get to that.
- 4:36Yeah, now this is your famous chili.
- 4:38Isn't this your famous It's? World famous World famous Jay.
- 4:41Yeah. All right.
- 4:42What's the 1 secret ingredient that you can tell our listeners
- 4:44and viewers love? Nice.
- 4:46Well done. OK, that's all right.
- 4:48Well, let me touch on what I was with executive producer Aldo
- 4:51Roma. We decided we were going to do.
- 4:53I had to check in with both of you at multiple times leading up
- 4:56to the game to find out who was playing in the game.
- 4:58I couldn't seem to keep that in my head and did have to look it
- 5:01up prior to the game, but I did watch and we both did.
- 5:03We did nachos and not just any nachos.
- 5:06We went to the Whole Foods and we got the higher end Mad
- 5:09Mexican Nacho chips, nice thin Nacho chips.
- 5:12We got their organic shredded 33 cheese blend that we put on
- 5:18that, put some chili flakes on that and had ourselves a great
- 5:23Nacho dinner. And then we followed that up
- 5:25with some cake that we had bought there, some little
- 5:27individual cakes. So we had some of that course.
- 5:30Yeah, we didn't. Neither of us finished our
- 5:31individual cakes. We'll be finishing those
- 5:33tonight. But we got those started.
- 5:35And so we had a little savory, a little sweet to get us into the
- 5:38game. So wait, you each had your own
- 5:40individual cake? Yeah, they.
- 5:42They're in little plastic containers at the Whole Foods.
- 5:45Yeah, individual sections. So you had a slice of cake and
- 5:47mine was more like a parfait. There was like whipped cream,
- 5:50some cake crumb, some topic. It was delicious and I look
- 5:54forward to the rest of it today. So the.
- 5:56Party. Yeah, yeah, sounds very
- 5:58decadent, Jay. Exactly what you one would
- 6:00expect at the mini mansion. Mexican, by the way, that's.
- 6:03Great chips. That was a 10 out of 10 in my
- 6:05books, right off the top there, yeah.
- 6:07And I make good salsa too. Yeah, we didn't do that.
- 6:10We didn't do the salsa, but we did have Frank's red hot sauce.
- 6:13I put on top of the done chips and yeah, chips and cheese.
- 6:17Try it. Frank's red hot sauce.
- 6:19The wing sauce. The wing sauce.
- 6:20Wing sauce on nachos? My God, you're inventing stuff
- 6:23all like, all the time, Jay. I tell you, this is great.
- 6:27Why don't we do shot #2 and talk about the game?
- 6:30Craig, what have you got for us? We know what it is.
- 6:32Got Oh no, I'm I'm going to go blue menu lime sparkling water.
- 6:35I'm switching it up. See that?
- 6:37Nice, beautiful, well done. I'm sticking with the water.
- 6:41I'm hitting the iron after this so I got to stay hydrated.
- 6:43All right, and I'm going to stick with the Fuse.
- 6:45Cheers. Let's talk about this game.
- 6:50Craig, you kind of you kind of tipped your hat to what you felt
- 6:52of the game, but why don't you kick us off?
- 6:54What were your views on this game?
- 6:56Re thanks guys. OK, First off, you had to really
- 6:59love football to to appreciate this game.
- 7:03It was 12, nothing after 3/4 I think.
- 7:05Yeah, it was it was pretty defensive and the Seahawks
- 7:10defense, they dominated the Patriots sacked MVP runner up
- 7:14Drake May 6 times forcefully turnover.
- 7:16So that was my first thing obvious thing, right?
- 7:18If you watch the game, the defense was incredible.
- 7:20Sand Arnold's redemption tour. Yeah, he was drafted high by The
- 7:24Jets and discarded by multiple teams and has made his way to be
- 7:28the only 2018. A quarterback to.
- 7:32Win a Super Bowl and there's a lot of elite quarterbacks from
- 7:352018. Jason, I know you're a big fan
- 7:37of that draft class. So Josh Allen, obviously 2018
- 7:41Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, some pretty big names coming out of
- 7:442018. My third big thing, this is
- 7:46interesting. I thought the kicker should have
- 7:48won the MVP myself. Barry, I don't know how you
- 7:50felt. He kicked 5 field goals.
- 7:51First time a kicker has ever kicked that many field goals.
- 7:54But you can't give a kicker the MVP.
- 7:56So went to a running back and it's only the 8th running back
- 7:58ever to win the Super Bowl MVP. And that was the yeah, Super
- 8:01Bowl. So a little bit of crack
- 8:03research from my intern to help me with that one.
- 8:06Nice. But I thought, you know what?
- 8:09It was just it was, it was nothing but Seahawks news.
- 8:12There was nothing, nothing the Patriots did.
- 8:13That's really, really newsworthy other than they just got
- 8:16obliterated. So, you know, just lopsided
- 8:18game. If you like watching the
- 8:19Patriots lose, it was a lot of fun.
- 8:20But I think the you know, that somehow they've they've they've
- 8:24silently assembled this team of killer defenders and they've
- 8:27just, they were just unstoppable.
- 8:29Patriots had no answers. I don't know.
- 8:30What do you think? Barry yeah, no, I completely
- 8:32agree. They had no answers.
- 8:33I also found myself, and I do love football very much, but I
- 8:37found myself distracted at times, let's just say during the
- 8:42and like you said, I mean, it was a whole bunch of field
- 8:43goals. I didn't realize that a kicker
- 8:45could never win an MVP. Is that true?
- 8:47Is that? That's just my my hot take.
- 8:49I don't think they'd ever give it to him, but he should have, I
- 8:51thought. He was.
- 8:52Probably the most important player on the field for the
- 8:54first. 3 for sure, yeah. I mean, if he wasn't there, they
- 8:57wouldn't. Seahawks would have had those 12
- 8:59points. I mean, yeah, it was kind of, it
- 9:02was a bit of a snooze fest. I got to be quite honest with
- 9:04you. I'm glad that I was buzzed and
- 9:06with a full belly. I had a friend over because
- 9:09there were multiple times I just turned my head away from the
- 9:12screen and I didn't look back for what seemed like go, I don't
- 9:15know, 10 to 15 minutes now, taking walks around the
- 9:19apartment. That's Jay's strategy.
- 9:21That's my move. That I, that I employed, yeah,
- 9:23it's actually, it's a good move, Jay.
- 9:24It actually helped. Stepson.
- 9:26Get the steps and help to aid in the digestion.
- 9:29I mean, like I said, that beefy chili was, it was pretty Hardy,
- 9:32so it would help to, you know, keep things moving.
- 9:35But yeah, the game, I just wasn't as engaged.
- 9:38Also, you know, as much as I was rooting for a team because of a
- 9:43personal reason, it wasn't I still found myself bored.
- 9:47I mean, I just have to say it. And I do love football, but I
- 9:50just was like, man, this is not as exciting.
- 9:53It was kind of tough. If you think about some of the
- 9:56exciting Super Bowls we've covered Jason and Barry on your
- 9:59show, we had the we had the Rams over the Bengals.
- 10:03Remember that one? We had Casey over Philly.
- 10:05We had Casey over San Fran. We've had some.
- 10:07Thrillers. Yes, thrillers.
- 10:09Yeah, and and then we had the snooze fest that actually.
- 10:12Yeah, it was. Greatest game I've ever seen,
- 10:15guys. Greatest game I've ever seen.
- 10:17I love a defensive matchup. No, I do it.
- 10:20I don't. I really don't.
- 10:22I was. You'd be excited, you know, just
- 10:24to kind of get all three of us in there.
- 10:25Yeah, I was in the same boat now, executive producer Elder
- 10:29Roman. I did like, typically we watch
- 10:30TV downstairs in the living room.
- 10:32We went upstairs into the backroom because we wanted to
- 10:35watch it in 4K. So Barry, I hope you had your 4K
- 10:38channel on. Of course and I and it's worth
- 10:40noting that this is the first time that I know that TSN
- 10:43actually had the full 4K feed. It wasn't just up converted from
- 10:47another source. Like it's kind of it's about
- 10:49time that they they only have 14K channel.
- 10:52It's about time that they are you, you know, used it to
- 10:54broadcast the biggest game in the world.
- 10:57Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's just poker,
- 10:58curling or something. Yeah, the game looked fantastic.
- 11:02It just wasn't. The content wasn't quite as
- 11:04stimulating as the images, you know what I mean?
- 11:07But the threads on the uniforms, Craig Zab, it's over to you.
- 11:10I thought my highlight for the first half was Brandi Carlile
- 11:13singing God Bless America. I thought she was That was my
- 11:17That's how I. Missed it?
- 11:18Absolutely boring. The game wise.
- 11:21It was, I thought. She was amazing.
- 11:24I caught up on my Superman and the Justice League graphic novel
- 11:28on my iPad, so just to let you know where I did, I was spend
- 11:32some time on that reading that while the game was on, because
- 11:36yeah, it was. The nachos were definitely the
- 11:38highlight for me, and the cake was also there as well.
- 11:41Of course. Yeah, OK.
- 11:43So that's kind of the game. That's the game.
- 11:46Did any of us were any? I guess Barry, you were the
- 11:48closest, I guess, in winning the score.
- 11:50I had like a 35 to 24. Craig, you were.
- 11:53Like, I was like 2119, but I don't think we're really
- 11:56anywhere close to that. Were we?
- 11:58I mean, yeah. And no Super Bowl has ever
- 12:01finished in 2119 in the 60 years of the game's history.
- 12:04So that's why I felt pretty good about that prediction.
- 12:07Nice. All right, but let's talk about,
- 12:09as we always do, the halftime show.
- 12:11This is usually where I shine, but the halftime show for me
- 12:14also featured the performer that I didn't know a lot about Bad
- 12:17Bunny, but. Craig, not to mention not
- 12:20understanding what he said. So that left a lot of people
- 12:23scratching their heads, I think, yeah.
- 12:24What did you think, Craig? Let's start with you.
- 12:29I had no idea what he was singing about, but the set was
- 12:32amazing, the energy was fun. I loved it.
- 12:34I actually really enjoyed it. I know a lot of I was on some
- 12:37text change with some friends who did not like it, but I loved
- 12:41it and I have no idea what the songs are about.
- 12:44How about the kids? How are the kids the kids?
- 12:47All were downstairs at that point, completely lost focus.
- 12:50My 14 year old son, though, he liked it a lot, but he didn't
- 12:53know who Bad Bunny was. He thought it was cool.
- 12:55I said what? You know, I remember when Bruce
- 12:58Springsteen did the halftime show and he just sort of looked
- 13:00at me like I was crazy. So clearly the halftime show was
- 13:03not for me. It was for younger generation,
- 13:07Jason. Let's just say that was great.
- 13:09What do you guys think? Jay, do you want to jump in?
- 13:11Yeah, I also, I enjoyed it. You know what I found Bad Bunny
- 13:14was, he was like a concierge. You're kind of walking around.
- 13:17He was kind of walking you around the stage, and he would
- 13:20introduce you to certain people. So there's a Lady Gaga.
- 13:22And she did, I thought, a great job with her bear.
- 13:24Then you go to Ricky Martin and Ricky Martin, who was, you know,
- 13:27the butt of jokes for a while, for many years, I think we all
- 13:29got to admit that guy's got a set of pipes on him and he
- 13:32really sang. It looks great.
- 13:34Yeah, it looks great. He sings amazing, amazing.
- 13:37So he did a good job and I think Bad Bunny did a good like he
- 13:40talked toxings kind of thing and then he climbed up on stuff and
- 13:44it was and he fell on things. It was it was like a pratfall.
- 13:47It was like the Dick Van Dyke show.
- 13:48That's for all the boomers out there.
- 13:51That was my bad buddy. But I did I enjoyed it for what
- 13:54it was, which was sort of this concierge walk around and
- 13:57introduction, kind of like the Lawrence Welk meets at the
- 14:00modern day Barry. What do you think?
- 14:01Last word on Bad Bunny. Man, you have so many Boomer
- 14:05references in your rant there. It's amazing.
- 14:07I love it. And finishing with Lawrence Welk
- 14:09is a is killer. Yeah.
- 14:11Typically the Super Bowl halftime show is reserved for
- 14:14the older Axe, which is kind of. They went against it this year
- 14:17because Bad Bunny is still relevant.
- 14:18Very much so. He's not on his farewell tour.
- 14:21He's still selling out arenas around the world.
- 14:24But you know, I would have preferred it.
- 14:27He was singing in English. I mean, that's just my personal
- 14:30preference when it comes to listening to music.
- 14:32I prefer hearing my own language.
- 14:34But it was a bold choice. And no one has ever done that
- 14:37before. So he'll be remembered certainly
- 14:39for that. But yeah, I agree with you.
- 14:41There's a lot of walking around. I I did like the sets, the
- 14:43grass. I didn't really understand him
- 14:45climbing up on stuff and pretending to like that he was
- 14:48hanging himself or some of the dancers were.
- 14:50It was a bit weird. Telephone pole.
- 14:52They were hanging upside down with one foot, so I was like,
- 14:55what is that? What are they doing?
- 14:56They went up a telephone pole and I was sort of trying to
- 14:58figure out what the what the point of Yeah, I thought he was.
- 15:00Fixing the Wi-Fi in the stadium, I think he was that what it?
- 15:03Yeah. Maybe that's what it was, right?
- 15:04Well, it's a new stadium. The fact that they had to fix it
- 15:06already is sad comment on Levi's Stadium.
- 15:09But anyway, yeah, I mean, it was OK.
- 15:11I would, I would. It was OK.
- 15:12I would go ahead and give it an OK, but I did not.
- 15:15It was certainly one that I'll forget faster than some of the
- 15:19other ones we've seen. Did you like it versus last
- 15:22year? Kendrick Lamar was last year,
- 15:24right? Did you?
- 15:24Yeah, Kendrick did a good job. I don't know.
- 15:26I mean, the surprises, like Lady Gaga, I don't think she was
- 15:30supposed to show up, or Ricky Martin.
- 15:31So those, you know, kind of fun to have some surprises.
- 15:34Yeah. But yeah, I don't know, man.
- 15:36I liked it as much as Kendrick Lamar, maybe a little bit more
- 15:39because I also don't know Kendrick Lamar songs.
- 15:42So whether you're singing in English or Spanish, like I just,
- 15:46I don't know the songs anyway, so I can, you know, in either
- 15:49way, could I really get into them?
- 15:51But. Sure that was.
- 15:52Kind of my view as well on on Bad Bunny.
- 15:54How about you, Craig? How do you stack it up with
- 15:56Kendrick Lamar and why or should we?
- 15:58You know what? I.
- 15:58Think, I actually think I preferred to Kendrick Lamar.
- 16:01It's because I like, I thought the set was just vibrant and
- 16:05yeah, colorful and visually interesting and upbeat.
- 16:08And I, you know what I I would say of all the halftime shows
- 16:12we've evaluated, we think with the weekend or Rihanna, I was up
- 16:15there for just talk ability. That's all I was talking about
- 16:18today on sports talk radio I found.
- 16:21And there was the alternate halftime show.
- 16:23Head Rock. Which was running in the.
- 16:25I don't know if you heard it, but that story, yeah,
- 16:27conservative media empire down South had an alternate halftime
- 16:31show for those that. They're rock and.
- 16:34Roll so that would that would have been entertained to have
- 16:37watched. I just read about it, but it was
- 16:39it got the Super Bowl. A NFL has 18 games next year.
- 16:42I think they have 18 games in the next few years going to be
- 16:45overseas. They said they're playing
- 16:47Australia, they sign a contract, they're going to play in Paris.
- 16:50So they want international audiences.
- 16:52So this is the the hook. Nice.
- 16:54Well, Craig, thank you for being here to wrap up this season and
- 16:58we hope you'll be here with us next season to be able to talk
- 17:01about this incredible hook. And as the NFL continues to go
- 17:04global, gentlemen, as always, another successful Super Bowl
- 17:08wrapped up. Let's hope next year's a little
- 17:10bit more exciting and maybe Oasis will do that halftime show
- 17:13just like Barry, you and I predicted earlier this year and
- 17:15still think we did that. That is a great job that that is
- 17:17a great idea for them to. Pursue perfect.
- 17:20All right. Thanks, Craig.
- 17:22Have a great night everybody. See you, Craig.
