Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: More now on the training exercise tragedy at CFB Wainwright
- 0:03Speaker 1: in Alberta. Four service members were killed in a fire
- 0:06Speaker 1: on Saturday and dozens more are in hospital, many of
- 0:09Speaker 1: them in critical condition. It's one of the worst military
- 0:12Speaker 1: disasters on home soil in peacetime in Canada's history. CBC
- 0:17Speaker 1: News spoke with MPs on their way into the House
- 0:19Speaker 1: of Commons earlier today for their reaction. Some of them
- 0:23Speaker 1: have children serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
- 0:26Speaker 2: As a Military mother, you can imagine what my reflections are.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's been an incredibly difficult weekend for the military community.
- 0:35Speaker 2: My hearts go out to the family members, those who
- 0:39Speaker 2: were killed, but also those who were injured. I'm praying
- 0:44Speaker 2: for their safe recovery.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I share in the sending of my condolences. I've been
- 0:49Speaker 3: praying for the fallen, for their families, for their brothers
- 0:54Speaker 3: and sisters in arms. for the casualties, the dozens who
- 0:59Speaker 3: were injured. And I think that it's a very sad
- 1:06Speaker 3: reminder of the risks that the men and women who
- 1:08Speaker 3: serve our country with unlimited liability face at home and
- 1:12Speaker 3: abroad when they serve Canada.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Our older son is in the forces. He's been there
- 1:18Speaker 4: for just a few years now. He works in Quebec.
- 1:22Speaker 4: So my family does... feel what it may mean for
- 1:27Speaker 4: the affected families in Alberta, British Columbia, in Saskatchewan and elsewhere,
- 1:32Speaker 4: what it may mean to go through that state of
- 1:38Speaker 4: affairs of the people who died, but also the people
- 1:40Speaker 4: who have suffered and will continue to suffer. The service
- 1:44Speaker 4: that they are providing our country deserves to be brought
- 1:49Speaker 4: to light, especially in those difficult circumstances.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Let's get more details about those four service members who
- 1:55Speaker 1: were killed. For that, let's turn to the CBC's Mark Carcassel,
- 1:58Speaker 1: who joins me in studio. So, Mark, what more do
- 2:00Speaker 1: we know about the victims?
- 2:01Speaker 5: Andrew, you see the faces and the names that go
- 2:04Speaker 5: along with them. You realize these are four young men
- 2:08Speaker 5: and who are just being mourned right across the country,
- 2:10Speaker 5: as you heard the MP saying there. Let's bring up
- 2:13Speaker 5: the board with their names and faces here. You've got
- 2:16Speaker 5: Sergeant Morgan Wong from Edmonton. Private Sean Farrell from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Private Hayden Lukemark from Langley, B.C. And Private Aidan Goulding.
- 2:27Speaker 5: from North Vancouver. Those are the four names. And we've
- 2:31Speaker 5: learned a little bit more about them through their family
- 2:33Speaker 5: and friends speaking publicly about them, offering their thoughts, in
- 2:38Speaker 5: some cases, directly to CBC. For instance, the mother of
- 2:41Speaker 5: Private Aidan Goulding from North Vancouver, his mother, Sonia, spoke
- 2:44Speaker 5: to CBC News directly. She says that when she heard
- 2:47Speaker 5: the news of the fire in Wainwright Saturday, she knew
- 2:52Speaker 5: exactly where her son was, She had tried to reach
- 2:56Speaker 5: him frantically all day. She couldn't get a hold of him.
- 2:58Speaker 5: And then military personnel showed up at the family home
- 3:02Speaker 5: Saturday night around 11 p.m. local time. And she knew
- 3:07Speaker 5: that it was a sign of the worst. Have a
- 3:10Speaker 5: listen to what she told CBC News about her fallen son.
- 3:14Speaker 6: I think Aiden was always the guy that kept everybody's
- 3:17Speaker 6: spirits up. I went to both of his graduations at
- 3:21Speaker 6: the Army. And that's what his commanding officers would say
- 3:25Speaker 6: to me. He was the light of my life. I mean,
- 3:30Speaker 6: he really was the light of my life.
- 3:33Speaker 5: Sonia Monk describes her son as an exceptional athlete, a
- 3:36Speaker 5: natural leader. He was previously a mechanic, and he loved
- 3:39Speaker 5: that work. He also enjoyed being in the military. His
- 3:42Speaker 5: goal was to work special ops in the military and
- 3:44Speaker 5: then eventually move on to a career in CSIS. Private
- 3:48Speaker 5: Sean Farrell from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, serving with the 3rd Battalion,
- 3:51Speaker 5: Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. According to the address that
- 3:55Speaker 5: Prime Minister Mark Carney gave in the House today, known
- 3:58Speaker 5: on base as a master of the game of chess,
- 4:01Speaker 5: I had a lot of friends, and in a Facebook
- 4:04Speaker 5: post from his mother, Patricia, it's written, quote, It is
- 4:07Speaker 5: with heavy hearts that we share the news that our son,
- 4:09Speaker 5: Sean Farrell, has passed away to be with our Heavenly Father.
- 4:12Speaker 5: We want to thank everyone for your love, support, and
- 4:15Speaker 5: prayers during this incredibly difficult time. As our family navigates
- 4:18Speaker 5: this profound loss, we kindly ask for privacy so that
- 4:21Speaker 5: we may grieve together. Love you, my darling child. Private
- 4:25Speaker 5: Hayden Lukemark from Langley, B.C., is said to have been,
- 4:29Speaker 5: by the Prime Minister himself, best friends with Private Sean Farrell,
- 4:33Speaker 5: who also died on Saturday, also with the 3rd Battalion,
- 4:36Speaker 5: Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. We know that he played
- 4:39Speaker 5: rugby in high school. He was an athlete regarded by
- 4:42Speaker 5: friends as being witty and was seeking a career in
- 4:45Speaker 5: law enforcement eventually. And Sergeant Morgan Wong from Edmonton with
- 4:49Speaker 5: the 49th Battalion, Loyal Edmonton Regiment, He joined the Canadian
- 4:52Speaker 5: forces in 2017, served in Latvia from October of 2024
- 4:57Speaker 5: to June of 2025, and was preparing for another tour
- 5:01Speaker 5: in Europe before this tragedy struck. In a statement, his
- 5:04Speaker 5: family writes, he was an incredible person who was always
- 5:07Speaker 5: there whenever anyone needed him. He loved being active and
- 5:09Speaker 5: spending time with his friends and family. He was extremely
- 5:12Speaker 5: proud to serve with the Canadian Armed Forces.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And Mark, there are families across Canada keeping a close
- 5:17Speaker 1: eye on loved ones injured in this incident as well.
- 5:20Speaker 1: 19 in critical condition.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Yeah, 19 critical injuries, some of them said to be
- 5:25Speaker 5: severe burns, and 39 patients being served, being taken care
- 5:30Speaker 5: of in hospital across Alberta. That's a large number of people,
- 5:33Speaker 5: and so a large number of families watching this hoping
- 5:36Speaker 5: for the best, and extended families hoping for the best
- 5:38Speaker 5: as well. One of them is the family of Kathy Keene.
- 5:41Speaker 5: She's a mayoral candidate in Oromadonte, Ontario, near Barrie. But
- 5:45Speaker 5: she posted on Facebook yesterday that her son was involved
- 5:49Speaker 5: in this. She writes overnight, our family received the devastating
- 5:51Speaker 5: news that our eldest son is among the military personnel
- 5:54Speaker 5: critically injured in the incident in Wainwright, Alberta, on Saturday.
- 5:58Speaker 5: As a mother right now, I need to be with
- 5:59Speaker 5: my son and family. I will be traveling to Alberta
- 6:02Speaker 5: and unable to continue door knocking for the remainder of
- 6:05Speaker 5: the mayoral campaign. And again, can't hammer it home enough
- 6:08Speaker 5: how much the family is families are in the thoughts
- 6:12Speaker 5: of many Canadians. I mean, everywhere you go, no matter
- 6:14Speaker 5: where you are in this country right now, you're seeing
- 6:16Speaker 5: flags at half-mast on all sorts of different buildings. It's
- 6:19Speaker 5: really a national tragedy.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Sure is. Mark, thank you. CBC's Mark Harkesall.
