- 0:23It is a black omen to journey in poor health.
- 0:29You will remain and well rest yourself.
- 0:34I must object, my lord. You will obey this, my town soul. But, my lord...
- 0:45Count?
- 0:49Music.
- 0:50You have my locket. Dude. What?
- 1:23Let's go. Hey, buddy. Welcome back to another exciting episode of Sinister Frame. I'm your host, Kieran.
- 1:31And with me, as usual, sadly, Trevor.
- 1:35Great to be here, as always, Kieran. You see, I'm spreading the positive vibes, all like you.
- 1:40Well, I'm glad you brought up positive vibes. Because today's a big day.
- 1:45It's supposed to be a positive day. I know the Eggers household are all waiting around their stereo.
- 1:53Yep. To wait for this podcast to see if I'm going to be in the Edgar's bandwagon
- 1:58or if I'm just going to fucking jump right off.
- 2:01It's a big day. It's Edgar's day. It's a big day.
- 2:05He's pretty concerned. He said that he might be pulling from the theaters,
- 2:08depending on my outcome. Yeah.
- 2:12So Universal called me and says, Karen, can you get on this? And I said, I'm on it.
- 2:17As you know, I had the flu, so I never got to see it in time.
- 2:21So I finally saw it in the theater like it should be.
- 2:23And now I'm here reviewing it for y'all. I'm sorry to hear you had man flu.
- 2:28Man flu is very serious as we all know.
- 2:31That's right. Yeah. That's right. I had toast and water for a couple of days.
- 2:40Right. That's what I had. Were you in prison again? Yeah.
- 2:49Yeah, that's probably something from Ofcom or something. Yeah,
- 2:55that sounds more like it.
- 2:56All right, yeah, so we're here to talk about Braggers, Nosferatu.
- 2:59You got a pass on The Witch, which is a pretty decent little film.
- 3:03The Northman, well shot, but pointless.
- 3:06Lighthouse is one of the worst ones ever produced. That's a great.
- 3:09So I'm on the fence with him, and do I chuck him out the window and say, Eggers, good luck.
- 3:14You have a pretty solid fan base. This movie's a hit for you,
- 3:17so you'll probably be okay.
- 3:20But we're going to jump into this one pretty quickly here and talk about Nosferatu.
- 3:26You know, I always say when you do a remake, make it your own.
- 3:33Keep the source material true, but make it your own.
- 3:37They did it very successfully. In my eyes, they did it very successfully with
- 3:41the new Salem's Lot. They did it very successfully with the new RoboCop.
- 3:45RoboCop should have been R. It would have really been better.
- 3:49But they really hit all the park with the Fright Night reboot.
- 3:53Disagree. That they did a couple years back.
- 3:55You've never seen the Fright Night reboot. Yes, I have. I have it on DVD.
- 3:59Yeah, it's just a lie. You're a pathologic. What bullshit? I saw it as soon
- 4:03as it came out, and I also bought it on DVD.
- 4:07While it's serviceable, to me it was pointless, and it'll never touch the original.
- 4:14Let's stop there. Yep. Pointless.
- 4:17Pointless. if you're not going to do something different with the film don't do it okay.
- 4:26This is nothing but a copy and paste of the original and the 1979 version.
- 4:34Besides something with the rats and the Black Plague, he adds nothing to this
- 4:39but more of a current atmospheric tone to it.
- 4:42Well, the rats and the Black Plague stuff are in the 79 and the... Oh, there you go.
- 4:48He adds nothing. This is nothing but a copy and paste of the Elast of the other
- 4:53two. There's nothing of value here.
- 4:56Some well-shot moments, don't get me wrong. The acting is serviceable.
- 5:02But I have never in my life wanted to be bitten by a vampire and be taken, my life taken.
- 5:10This is the most boring fucking film.
- 5:13Two hours and 12 minutes of this shit.
- 5:17And I'll tell you what, he has an hour left to show you on DVD when it comes out.
- 5:22I'll buy that for you. Are you fucking kidding me?
- 5:26Are you kidding me? Let me tell you something. Here's the problem with Nosferatu,
- 5:30and it's a big one. Well, it's two of them, actually.
- 5:34First of all, first of all, you could have cut 45 minutes from this film.
- 5:41Easily. Well, within reason, we'll say a half hour.
- 5:44Literally, Ellen Hunter and Thomas Hunter argue about the same thing every scene,
- 5:52and they go on and on for 15 minutes.
- 5:56Oh but i love him he's in my dreams he's in my uterus and he tingles my body
- 6:00what are you saying woman next scene oh he's in my body he's in my uterus next
- 6:05scene oh he's in my body and it doesn't stop.
- 6:10And the moaning of this woman, for like 45 minutes.
- 6:16Then you've got, oh, the best part, the reveal of our boy, who I love, Bill Skarsgård.
- 6:22By the way, kudos with the accent. It's pretty creepy. Give him that. But he did his job.
- 6:26But who the fuck made Count Orlok, an old man, a porn, 70s porn star mustache?
- 6:34Historical detail and accuracy.
- 6:36I don't give a fuck. I don't want to fucking hear that. I don't give a fuck.
- 6:40It's true. I know that's what he was doing, but this is, it is horrible looking.
- 6:45And it's the most unscary vampire, even over Return to Salem's Lot,
- 6:50where they just wore a mask.
- 6:52It is so, this is not scary.
- 6:56Anybody, this film is getting teetered on. It's like, it's a killer mess.
- 7:01They don't know where they stand.
- 7:03Guys, it's not scary and it's extremely boring.
- 7:06It is, wow. Okay. Quite a rant there, Ciarán.
- 7:11Yes, because I'm angry. Why are you angry?
- 7:14We're going to jump into this now. Right now. Well, you've got to run a game
- 7:18of opinions, so we could just quit now.
- 7:21Yeah, good point. Thank you for joining us here at Citizen Frame.
- 7:25Okay. I would say that there are, I recently revisited the 79 and the 22 versions,
- 7:31and there are subtle differences, I would say, in terms of the presentation
- 7:35of Orlok, and generally the stuff about Ellen,
- 7:39you know, with her basically portrayed as a sort of free spirit psychic you
- 7:43know, that sort of thing harkened back to, I believe, a real life historical person,
- 7:49from that period and there's also subtleties, whose name just escapes me at
- 7:53the moment, there's also subtleties about the conflict between,
- 7:56you know the Enlightenment age and the old ways and stuff,
- 8:00which is more sort of looked into this Eager's version, but I mean,
- 8:06it's a beautiful film to look at.
- 8:08I was really looking forward to this, and I have to admit, well,
- 8:11you know, we'll get to it. We'll get to it.
- 8:14Yeah, so we've got pretty much the low casters I like. You've got Lily Rose
- 8:19Depp plays Alan Hunter. You've got Nicholas Holt as Thomas Hutter.
- 8:22You've got Bill Skarsgård as Conorlock.
- 8:25Aaron Taylor Johnson as Frederick Harding. You've got William Dafoe as Professor Eddard.
- 8:31You've got Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, and then you've got the guy I like to
- 8:34see, Ralph Einz. He's pretty much all of his films. Yeah, he fenced you from the office.
- 8:38Dr. Severs. So, yeah, the movie's done well. And I always like when horror does well.
- 8:44Universal's has the international rights and focus features.
- 8:46It's one of focus features. They're an independent studio. Yeah.
- 8:50Biggest hit, one of their biggest hits, which is nice to see.
- 8:53Universal, nice to see them, you know, getting some of the monster universe
- 8:58back in their pocket. So I don't mind that at all.
- 9:02Jesus. So the opening scene here, you got Ellen. I fucking don't care anymore.
- 9:07Is she a young, young? Okay, is she being?
- 9:10She is basically psych, right? Okay, no, no, no. Here's what I don't get.
- 9:15She looks just like she does. Okay, the movie takes place in Germany,
- 9:201837. Yes. Okay, let's get that out of the way.
- 9:22The opening sequence is Ellen fucking doing, oh, moaning and groaning the whole fucking 10 minutes.
- 9:28Yes. And Nassafiraj is like, oh, I want to blah, blah, blah.
- 9:32And then is she an old flame? No. Or was she 10?
- 9:37No, no. When this scene was shot? How old is she here? I don't know.
- 9:40It's not revealed her exact age, but she is younger, and it is revealed later on that she was a child.
- 9:45Although it is more than heavily suggested that she has some sort of psychic powers.
- 9:49But what she did so through her psychic powers as a
- 9:52child she summoned him she basically
- 9:55summoned him through i don't know her powers or
- 9:58whatever and so basically all of the events
- 10:01of this film are actually her fault because she
- 10:05summoned him and he took her so yes
- 10:08he basically took her as a child and
- 10:11then it's revealed later on that her father come out and said this is sin this
- 10:14is sin you know all this sort of thing so yes technically
- 10:18he summoned him and the reason
- 10:20for everything all the bad stuff that happens in this film is essentially
- 10:24because of this opening scene with her and the director that's a good one by
- 10:33the way did you know did you know that anya taylor joy was originally cast in
- 10:37the character i don't care i don't care yeah well,
- 10:41there you go I don't care I don't care go ahead I don't care,
- 10:47So we're in Germany, 1838. Why is no one speaking German?
- 10:50Well, yes, that's for the sake of the Western audience. Yes,
- 10:53they should be technically. Why don't they just set it in England?
- 10:56Because the 1922 and the 1979 versions are set in Germany during this period.
- 11:03I mean, this is very much a version of Dracula.
- 11:07Let me ask you this. Let's stop you there. I want to piggyback on that comment.
- 11:11Yes. Now, we know the famous story about Nosferatu almost didn't get made because,
- 11:16Well, it didn't get re-released or whatever because they had to burn all the
- 11:20copies because the Stoker family sued them. Yes.
- 11:24I'll say this right now. They are completely right.
- 11:27It is Dracula. There's no settlement here. It's Dracula. Oh, yeah, 100%.
- 11:33But why is it allowed to be made now? Do they settle? Well, it's basically out of copyright.
- 11:38Dracula is out of copyright, the original novel, essentially.
- 11:42After so many years, things go out of copyright. So basically,
- 11:47me and you could make a Dracula film now or write a book with Dracula in it
- 11:52with no copyright claim against this.
- 11:55But whatever... Obviously, this was in the 1920s and Dracula was written in the late 1800s.
- 12:01So there was still a copyright on the novel.
- 12:05Ah, okay. And then once the copyright, they lost it, the Nosferatu 79 and the
- 12:09old copies of the 22 version could come out.
- 12:12Yes, essentially. Well, basically, the copies of the 22 were all meant to be
- 12:16destroyed, but all of them weren't, and it survived.
- 12:20Yeah, I know. I know that's what, yeah. Yeah. Okay.
- 12:26Yeah. I don't know where to go with this. Well, it's a six-week journey that
- 12:33Thomas has to take to go to Orlach's Manor. The castle, yes.
- 12:37Yeah. And I felt like I was there for six weeks. I'll give that.
- 12:42That Ellen keeps having these fucking dreams. They don't stop.
- 12:45I just, she's, she's seeing a dreams of our wedding.
- 12:49She's crying because Thomas isn't there. It's actually deaf.
- 12:52She's marrying, which is actually probably Orlok.
- 12:54And one of the weddings dead like, okay, great. This scene will be copied again.
- 12:59Probably the next scene. There's a lot of this blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:03Were you, were you just sad that Arnie didn't pop up and start shooting the
- 13:06fuck out of it? Nothing to do with it.
- 13:08You know what? This guy needs to modernize this stuff. This guy needs to get off from Goff. He won't.
- 13:15We'll see. We'll see. When his next film is going to be.
- 13:18But, I mean, the problem I think you have, let me, please, let me finish my sentence.
- 13:28Go ahead. Oh, I'm going to end your life now.
- 13:31I'm going to call Count Orlok. Yeah. He's going to come and bore you and not
- 13:37scare you because he's definitely going to do that. With his big, sexy mustache.
- 13:40He's going to tick you with his mustache as he sucks on your chest.
- 13:44Do you remember last year I grew a mustache for charity? I was not on like Orlok.
- 13:49But anyway, he copied me. Hey, look, it's resin.
- 13:56Yeah. Sorry, you were saying. He interrupted me so I forgot.
- 14:02I don't know what I was saying. I forgot. What was I ranting about?
- 14:06Well, I mean, there's so much stuff you're ranting about, it's hard to keep track.
- 14:10You know? You were saying that Egers needs to modernize.
- 14:13Yeah, he needs to modernize, man. He needs to, I mean, it's all the same thing.
- 14:18And it's just, he's just copying and pasting himself. He even uses familiar
- 14:23shots he used before. And that's fine, I guess.
- 14:27All filmmakers have their stamp, I guess you can say. You know, and that's fine.
- 14:35But it seems the way the film's cut, there's definitely a three-hour version.
- 14:41Jesus, I'm never going to watch that.
- 14:43But because it seems like there's a lot of scenes that something's going to
- 14:46happen, and then it cuts.
- 14:48Like I feel like the scene in the castle when he's at Orlok's,
- 14:51it's very cut. Where are we now? Is this the next day?
- 14:55Wait, is he still in the dinner scene when he first introduced him? I think.
- 15:00Where are we here? And then there's a scene where he meets these gypsies. and,
- 15:06And they're going vampire-huntering? I'm like, wait, is that a vampire they
- 15:09just killed? Why are they sacrificing a virgin?
- 15:12What's going on here? And then it cuts away. He's in Count Orlok's.
- 15:16I'm like, what is going on here? Well, I can sort of explain it, I think.
- 15:20The stuff with the Romanians, the gypsies, is basically,
- 15:24again, Eagers being obsessive over historical detail and going back to the old
- 15:30legends of vampires from when people actually really believed in vampires,
- 15:34where they would sacrifice a virgin and stuff you know
- 15:37and you know drive the metal through his heart also my
- 15:41take on the stuff in the castle where it
- 15:44is quite disjointed and dreamlike is because well
- 15:47basically that's what thomas is going through but also the 1979 version with
- 15:52these scenes are i mean the 1979 version is very dreamlike anyway overall but
- 15:57especially the scenes in the castle so it feels like almost a bit of a tip of
- 16:01the hat to that version you know the Werner Herzog version?
- 16:06Yeah, again, I think it's a cheat then. And also, you know, I remember watching
- 16:13Dracula, because we're all going to compare them all to the same.
- 16:16We don't have to keep saying Nasherah to. We can compare this with Dracula as
- 16:19well, because it pretty much is. And so I'm going to do that.
- 16:24And when I first saw the 89, 90 version, Coppola's version, wasn't a big fan
- 16:29of it. A lot of people worked on Keanu Reeves and stuff.
- 16:32But I just recently watched it. And I'm going to tell you right now,
- 16:35hands down, I think, I'm talking about a change of heart, is I think Bram Stoker's
- 16:43Dracula, the Coppola version, is fucking brilliant.
- 16:47And it's a master class in filmmaking, besides some casting issues, which we won't go over.
- 16:51But otherwise, it is just an incredible, it's visually stunning.
- 16:58I just remember Gary Oldman's bodysuit, which was muscles, when he was Vlad the Appaler. Yeah.
- 17:03And then the 79 version with Frank Lagella, which is my favorite version.
- 17:08Donna Pleasant's Lawrence Olivier.
- 17:10And just scary and atmospheric. So, I mean, in the 79 version,
- 17:16it was atmospheric and great visual effects.
- 17:20Elbert Whitlock and his matte paintings. And it was just fucking awesome.
- 17:24I think it's The Curse of Dracula is my favorite one with Christopher Lee.
- 17:30The one I think is the one where he falls at the end in the moat and it's all
- 17:33ice. Oh, that's Dracula. I think that's the one.
- 17:35That's Dracula AD 1972, I think.
- 17:39Yeah, it's modernized because it's very color. Yes. But that's my favorite one
- 17:43of that. And I'm watching this.
- 17:47And I'm like, I don't need colors and rainbows and fluffy bunnies. I'm not asking for that.
- 17:53But I want gore, right? I want a scary monster, and I want pacing.
- 18:00What's wrong with that? Is there anything wrong with those three things I ask
- 18:04for when I'm watching a fucking vampire film?
- 18:06I agree that there do appear to be some, well, I mean, Eagers has basically
- 18:10admitted that there are some editing issues, and it is a bit overlong, I think.
- 18:17I'm actually going to agree with you maybe they could have shaved half an hour of it.
- 18:21But yeah i mean it's it's if eagers
- 18:24is going to be doing something like nos for that too and this is a passion project
- 18:27it's you know look at eagers back catalogue
- 18:31it's always going to be bleak and grim and
- 18:34you know very much keeping with eagers mo
- 18:38so you know you're not going to get this isn't
- 18:41going to be leslie nielsen you know what i mean i think you now you're i never
- 18:45said anything but I think now you're no no I know no no I never said Leslie
- 18:49Nielsen no I know at all but I'm joking I mean I'm tired Gary Oldman shined
- 18:53in that role I actually over I quite like the couple of version but actually I,
- 19:00one of the things I didn't again it's just personal choice I'm not sort of knocking
- 19:04Gary Oldman but I you know I didn't really buy Gary Oldman 100% I'd have to watch it again but
- 19:10you buy this fucking idiot and this is nothing against again it's nothing against I like him.
- 19:16The problem is he's misused. He's never really used. He's in the shadows.
- 19:21And when you do see him, he's an old man with a mustache.
- 19:25That's it. There's no monster in this. So let's get that out of the way.
- 19:28This is a different interpretation, very much a different interpretation of Dracula.
- 19:32It's terrible. Let me ask you this. You were really pissed off with Salem's
- 19:35Law. You tore that movie to shred.
- 19:36You gave it a 3 out of 10, which is fucking disgraceful. Now you...
- 19:41You're saying that this... I was waiting for this vampire to want to come out
- 19:49and put on the biker outfit and join the village people or go to the 70s porn film festival.
- 20:01And this was terrible. And this is the big one.
- 20:06I know this is one of the biggest complaints is the look of him.
- 20:10And I'll tell you what now. There's no creepiness here. There's no, ooh. It was like...
- 20:17Wow. When I watched the original one back in 1922, and then I watched the 79
- 20:24of Klaus Kinski, and then we'll also bring up both Salem's Lots,
- 20:27and you watch them, that thing is fucking creepy.
- 20:30And you watch this, and you're like, what the fuck is this dirty old bastard
- 20:34trying to get in this young girl's pants? Yeah. This is it?
- 20:37Yeah. This is what I'm getting? And then when he finally gets his rocks off,
- 20:41let the sun come down on me.
- 20:43And he's just stupid.
- 20:46Right, okay. I mean, each to their own.
- 20:49I would say that this interpretation, and again, it's not for everyone, which is proved true.
- 20:54This version is, and again, like the previous versions of Nosferatu,
- 20:57the more famous ones, because there have been several, but the 79 and the 22,
- 21:01is a very different interpretation of a vampire.
- 21:05It's not the sort of sexy, sort
- 21:07of type of vampire, or the seductive type vampire. This guy is pure...
- 21:13You're interrupting me. Let me finish. Wow, Kitty's got claws Yeah,
- 21:18oh yeah Okay, don't do that again,
- 21:21Don't fucking do that again But anyway, you know, this version is Basically
- 21:25the manifestation of death It's basically death incarnate He's a plague carrier
- 21:31You know, quite literally You know, with the whole rats thing and stuff Again,
- 21:35harking back to the 79 and 22 versions So, yes, it's just a different interpretation
- 21:40Not for everyone Which is quite clearly the case Not just you, you know,
- 21:45yeah i mean you know each to their
- 21:47own let me ask you this go ahead just dude let's
- 21:51pretend this wasn't directed by robert edgers okay yes okay let's let's take
- 21:56off the rub robert edgers glasses for a moment okay all right this is directed
- 22:02by jim smith right all right jimmy yeah we're just Smith, one, what director? Yep.
- 22:10Would you have the exact same feelings toward this movie?
- 22:14I was underwhelmed by this film. The way he designed Count Orlok,
- 22:17would you sit there and defend it like you kind of are now?
- 22:20I get it, but it doesn't 100% work for me, I must admit.
- 22:25You know, so I'm not sort of like here to fight with you and sort of defend it.
- 22:29I'm here to discuss it and try and sort of, you know, give a reason for it.
- 22:34You know, or try and understand it.
- 22:35I think it's effective in some ways
- 22:39but you know it's definitely very
- 22:42eagers and a very eagers interpretation of it
- 22:45and again that's not never going to be for everyone i
- 22:48do admire the fact that he doesn't sort of
- 22:51you know he follows his vision and this as i said is a passion project
- 22:54again i was really you know looking forward
- 22:58to this it was the film was looking forward to over the last year
- 23:00the most and i have to admit that i came away
- 23:04and i've seen it twice in the cinema and i
- 23:07have to admit it does look gorgeous on the screen but being honest
- 23:10i did both times feel a little
- 23:12underwhelmed that could that could be down to me expecting too
- 23:16much in my head i think there is some
- 23:19i like the grim tone and you know the guard
- 23:22especially the stuff in the castle you know with the the coaching
- 23:25oil appears and stuff like that i do love all that gothic stuff
- 23:28you know you know that gothic horror sort of aesthetic
- 23:31and stuff but overall including the
- 23:35the realization of warlock i i'd be completely
- 23:38honest and say that both times i saw this in the cinema i
- 23:42have been underwhelmed all right so now with that statement yes you can clearly
- 23:48understand that you being agris fan you being underwhelmed is pretty disappointing
- 23:53and for a non-agris fan you understand why they'd fucking hate this.
- 23:58Yes, I do. You understand that? Yes. Okay.
- 24:00I'm not here to argue for the sake of argument. Listen, don't try to let the
- 24:05listening audience know that I'm not here to argue.
- 24:07I'm just here, blah, blah. No, stop it. We're here to argue. Fuck off.
- 24:11And I'll tell you right now, you're blind as hell if you got anything from this film.
- 24:16Now, I'm classy. I'm a classy person.
- 24:20I'm classy. I've got some positives. Right? Agers will be clutching at the east.
- 24:26No, they're actually good. You mentioned one scene. Go ahead.
- 24:28It's a beautiful. He knows how to use a camera and where to place a camera.
- 24:32I think he uses the same DP for most of his stuff.
- 24:35The scene where after the stupid virgin thing, what the fuck happened there?
- 24:39He walks down this trail of trees, this tunnel of trees, I guess you can say.
- 24:45And then from the shadows, you see the horse and carriage coming.
- 24:50And it's done with no sound, but you see it coming out of the fog.
- 24:53And then as it gets louder and louder, and then it disappears, it's right at him.
- 24:59And there's a shot where the door opens and he's walking toward the door to
- 25:03obviously get into the carriage. Then we see from inside the carriage,
- 25:06he starts just floating into it. Yes.
- 25:08Rather than walking. That's the kind of stuff I enjoy. I enjoyed that.
- 25:13And it does have plenty of that going for it.
- 25:15I do like the sequences in the castle.
- 25:18I think Bill Skarsgård's performance, his actions, really cool.
- 25:23Really thickens it up. And it's very sinister.
- 25:26And it does sound like an old crepid man talking with a sinister tone to it.
- 25:33It's quite creepy. again, and kudos for what he had to work with.
- 25:37And I think Orlok works better in the shadows than he does when he's revealed. Yes.
- 25:43Yeah. Fair enough. I like the fact that they deal with the, well,
- 25:50it would be the Demeter, the ship that brought Dracula over,
- 25:55but they deal with what happened to that.
- 25:58They show you the guys getting it and the plague being brought onto the boat
- 26:03and it's being carried over. That's why he's bringing the Black Plague to this town.
- 26:08And so I do like that. They showed that, that journey.
- 26:11You know, I always like my, how do you get to see? Well, they showed you B. And so I like that.
- 26:17But what I'm giving it passes on is very far and few between.
- 26:22There are, and it can't be forgiven with the editing issues,
- 26:26especially even matching in the castle.
- 26:28The castle is probably the best sequence of events.
- 26:31Him trying to get back to her from the castle and him trying to get back to
- 26:36her and Orlok's travels to Germany is the best part of the film.
- 26:42It's where there's more tension because Thomas has got to get back there to
- 26:46warn them and he's getting back there on the ship.
- 26:48So it's one of those kind of chasing sequences, I guess you can say.
- 26:53And it does work, but the editing issues in this castle scene are horrific.
- 26:59I had no idea what we're at here and where we're going and who's doing what.
- 27:04And he had some wolves in there that were poorly CGI'd in there,
- 27:08just as throw-ins. They were real wolves.
- 27:11According to Ellis Holt, they were real wolves. Because I think one of their bitum or something.
- 27:15Mean you mean real wolves that's what i said
- 27:18that's exactly what i said you said werewolves i said
- 27:21real wolves you said werewolves listen
- 27:24back to it listen back no i am gonna listen back to
- 27:27it i used to be a werewolf but i'm all
- 27:29right no i can see it now hey nicholas sit in the corner don't worry about it
- 27:34we have some werewolves come at you oh okay well that would have been i would
- 27:37have put him past hegers he's that much attention to detail but anyway no i
- 27:43mean there a lot of editing issues here overall, I think.
- 27:48We should have got more. We'll get too much in other scenes,
- 27:52like a lot of the talking scenes, let's just say, where basically they're arguing as a couple and stuff.
- 27:59That's the whole film. I would have liked to have seen more of Defoe.
- 28:02That's another character I don't get. My favorite character was Dr. Severs.
- 28:07Dr. Severs was... I like Aaron Johnson.
- 28:13Actually, all the characters are decent. I like Nock, who went fucking batshit
- 28:17crazy, who's kind of like the Renfield.
- 28:20I do like some of his scenes. But again, he disappears. And then he shows up
- 28:25at the very end in Orlok's coffin. Yes.
- 28:28Yes. What? Oh, surprise. Yeah. Well, that's to do with Defoe's plan,
- 28:33where Defoe knows that the only way to kill Orlok is through Ellen,
- 28:38because she's pure of heart.
- 28:40So basically it's the foe's character has basically tricked them all and they
- 28:44find that out at the end because he knows he knows that the only way he's an
- 28:47alchemist and you know he's into the occult and stuff,
- 28:51and again it goes against the sort of you know the enlightened age of sort of you know,
- 28:58you're fancy from the office basically you know there's that sort of conflict there,
- 29:02but yeah I would have liked to have seen more of the foe and I would have liked
- 29:06to have seen him be a bit more unhinged actually.
- 29:09Well, that wouldn't make sense to me then. You already got one character who's
- 29:12done hands, which is Nock, and so you can't do that.
- 29:16But that's the problem I have with the Defoe character. He's miswritten,
- 29:20and this is not Defoe's problem.
- 29:22So you have the two best characters. They're all decent enough,
- 29:26like I said, but there's the professor, which is Defoe, and Seavers, which is Ralph.
- 29:30Yes. And those two are my favorite characters. I like watching them on screen.
- 29:34And so at the end he brings him to the coffin they open the coffin,
- 29:41it's a lie there's fucking Renfield and they stab him he dies,
- 29:44whatever, the end but here's,
- 29:46Defoe's plan was to lead them away from Ellen because he knows Ellen has to
- 29:51pretty much die because once Dracula or Orlok we'll call him 70's porn star.
- 29:58Sucks on her chest he, because she's so pure of heart,
- 30:03he's gonna die the sun comes up he dies is that
- 30:06was the point of defoe right yeah essentially he read it
- 30:08in the book as well don't forget and yes
- 30:12yes yes but basically um well you know it's all the stuff about when the cock
- 30:15crows because it's basically you know the addiction of nosferatu is ellen he's
- 30:21he's obsessed with her you know like a lot of the characters in here you know
- 30:25not not just obsessed with ellen you know obsessed with certain things but orlava
- 30:28is completely obsessed with Ellen.
- 30:30So he won't be able to resist her blood once he starts sucking it.
- 30:34Even though the sun's about to come up and the cock's about to crow.
- 30:37Not the only cock that was seeing
- 30:39this, by the way. Yeah, so what you're saying is he wanted to get it on.
- 30:44That was more important than the sun coming down on him. Yes,
- 30:47he couldn't resist, yeah, essentially.
- 30:49He wanted something else to go down on him. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 30:52with his big cock crowing.
- 30:56Anyway, yeah, but that again ties in with
- 30:59the 22 and 79 versions that's how he's defeated yeah but I and that's great
- 31:05but you mean I was underwhelmed like I say you know yeah it's just I'll never
- 31:13watch this again won't even think about it it's too bad,
- 31:19it's just out of all of Eager's films I
- 31:23would place number one The Lighthouse
- 31:26number two The Witch then this
- 31:29and then the north man well the
- 31:32north man's entertaining you know but it's a simple revenge story but so maybe
- 31:36tied in number third with this and the north man but definitely the lighthouse
- 31:40number one and the witch number two i i i would say and if i'm completely honest
- 31:46i don't think this remake of nosferatu was necessary.
- 31:53It wasn't. Yeah. It would have been this. I mean, it's not necessarily necessary.
- 31:57If you're going to do something, do it differently. Don't give us the same shit. And he did.
- 32:03Yeah. But he made it longer. Well, he made it very much. And here's the problem.
- 32:08In terms of tone. Here's the problem.
- 32:10And the tone thing, you use that whole goth, goth is boring,
- 32:17and it's just- I didn't say that. I didn't say goth is boring.
- 32:20No, no. You know what I'm saying?
- 32:22You have this family. Goth is supposed to be atmospheric. Yes,
- 32:25of course it has. And you're supposed to sit there and want to hang yourself
- 32:28because that's what it is. Yes, pretty much.
- 32:32Fuck that. That's boring. That's just like I'm going to do a goth movie because
- 32:38suckers like Trevor are going to go, oh, I get it because of the atmosphere.
- 32:41And he's just going to be a lazy bastard and put out a fucking handlebar mustache on Dracula.
- 32:47And you guys are going to go, oh, my God. Oh, God, I saw the cloud lining.
- 32:52So what would you prefer? Something like, we're going to do Chucky next.
- 32:56Would you prefer the tone of Chucky? You know, Bride of Chucky?
- 32:59No, I gave you two. I gave you the original Salem's Lot. The new Salem's Lot.
- 33:04It's far, a lot of times better than this.
- 33:06And I gave you Fright Nights. I gave you South Night Dracula.
- 33:10I gave you Coppola. I gave you Christopher Lee.
- 33:12I mean, I gave you plenty of, plenty of, but this, there's nothing here that pops. Yeah.
- 33:18You have to lure people in.
- 33:21And when you're having a movie, that's pretty much just a girl getting up and
- 33:25shaking her body all over the bed going, he wants my uterus, whatever the fuck.
- 33:30And then he's fucking sitting in a castle going, with his fucking fingers flicking.
- 33:38And it's like, where are we going here, people? I mean, to get to point A to
- 33:44point C, you got to give us a B.
- 33:46And he does that. but oh my god that bee is so fucking boring all it is is her
- 33:52screaming i want him but i'm in love with thomas but i want him i'm in love
- 33:58with thomas every fucking scene right you could have played the ellen character
- 34:03that would have been interesting that would have been good yeah.
- 34:08You know for sure yeah but no no i get what you're saying and i have my own
- 34:13issues with it But if you're going to do Gothi Carter and a remake of Nosferatu,
- 34:18there has to be that type of atmosphere.
- 34:20You know what I mean? You know, you could do that atmosphere by about 40 minutes less.
- 34:26Yeah. I do agree that it's too long. It's way too long. Yeah.
- 34:31There's actually a point where I looked and as we're getting to the finale, right? Yes.
- 34:37There's 25 minutes left. I'm like, Oh Jesus, there's 25 minutes left of this
- 34:40crap, but it's starting to pick up. Finally, it only took five days.
- 34:44So, they're running to stab Orlok while Ellen's left alone. That made sense.
- 34:51Well, that's a trick Defoe does.
- 34:53So, why did they leave her alone? Because Defoe tricked them into basically,
- 35:00that's what I was saying earlier.
- 35:01Basically, Defoe is the guy who knows the only way he can be defeated is through Ellen.
- 35:08But why did all of the men leave Ellen alone?
- 35:12Why did one just stay? common sense because the foe convinces
- 35:16him to go out vampire hunting with him even the weak land so he
- 35:19does it don't forget there's a conversation as well you know whenever they
- 35:22drop the foe off at his house in the taxi where the foe walks ellen up to her
- 35:27door and he basically they basically agree the two of them agree this is a self-sacrifice
- 35:32from ellen i mean we like her talking about her story arcs on here the greatest
- 35:36arc here is ellen's where it's a self-sacrifice arc where she realises she must,
- 35:42with her and Defoe's chat, they agree that she must sacrifice herself.
- 35:47Now, obviously, Thomas, her husband, and Harding aren't going to allow that
- 35:51to happen if they knew it was going to happen.
- 35:53So they'd be waiting there with their steaks or their metal steaks or whatever,
- 35:57like the gypsies earlier.
- 36:00So that's why Defoe tricks them for the greater good. And Ellen's in on it, by the way.
- 36:07There you go. So when he's sucking on her chest. Yes. And he can't stop. Yes.
- 36:13Because her blood's pure. Yes. I love when you hear the rooster roosting. Yeah, well.
- 36:20And he looks up, he's like, oh, fucking shit. See, that would be good.
- 36:24If he looked up and goes, oh, fuck, man. But it's a brilliant death scene.
- 36:28You know, with all the blood coming out the eyes and stuff. And,
- 36:31you know, you can see like the back of his throat. Yes, I would say it's a really startling imagery.
- 36:36I was like We didn't even see any teeth We had no fangs in this film Because
- 36:42it's come back to the old folklore of vampires Oh, there we go Look,
- 36:47blame Eagers for his attention to historical detail Oh my god It's come back
- 36:50to the old sort of origins of the vampire myth Not the Hollywoodized origin Again,
- 36:56this is Eagers being an historical obsessive Don't say Hollywoodized,
- 36:59it's Stoker's Stoker has fangs Yes, I know, but
- 37:02it's become more popularized So it's not Hollywoodized it's more popularized
- 37:06alright well let's say the modern version of the vampire the modern fictional
- 37:10version of the vampire as opposed to the more historical legend of the vampire
- 37:15and the myths surrounding apparent real vampires that people would have actually
- 37:20believed back in these times.
- 37:22Give me Morpheus anytime. Morpheus, I want Morpheus I'll take Morpheus right
- 37:26now What about Leslie Nielsen?
- 37:31They had a love on it. Yeah, you know I'll take Leslie Nielsen dead and loving it no problem.
- 37:37No problem I take that in a heartbeat over this piece of crap I enjoyed a lot
- 37:41of it but there is I do have issues with it and I don't think it's the eager's best film yeah,
- 37:47he's off my radar now I'm done no until he until he gets away from his little goth and starts,
- 37:54you know expanding his horizons and giving us more something different apparently
- 37:58he wants to make a western next,
- 38:01oh dear fucking god One of his favorite films is one of your favorite films, Tombstone.
- 38:07Oh my God, he's going to destroy Tombstone. No, I don't know.
- 38:10I said he would like to. I know he has expressed interest in making a Western.
- 38:15I just, I do something different, pal. Obviously, he's a talented man,
- 38:19but nah, not my cup of tea. He's off my radar. I don't care anymore.
- 38:23So. There you go, Robert. That's it. Yeah.
- 38:27They're going to be like, God damn it, I disappointed Kieran. I mean, fucking hell.
- 38:35Why can't reviewers just be honest and start sucking the tit on the man?
- 38:40Pardon the pun because there's a lot of tit sucking, chest sucking here.
- 38:43Can people who review these films just be honest with themselves? You know what?
- 38:49It's a copy and paste. There's really nothing new here and I'm shocked that he's done this.
- 38:54Why can't people just be honest? The thing is, maybe they are.
- 38:57Because each to their own.
- 38:58Not everyone's going to agree with you. I don't think that's true.
- 39:01I don't think that's true.
- 39:02I think there's people who this is what they expect from Eggers so they're just going to go with it.
- 39:09They're kind of blinded by what he's done in the past without really looking
- 39:12at the source material. He's looking, he's touching, and just not going,
- 39:16you know, it's not there for me. Something's not right here.
- 39:20Instead of just doing that, but no, they just got to suck on the teat and go, oh, give me more Eggers.
- 39:26And that's not the way it should be done. The man needs to be punched in the gut.
- 39:30Right? No, the balance. True fans. No, true fans need to be punched.
- 39:35He needs to be punched in the gut.
- 39:36I'm not saying literally. I'm talking, you know what I mean.
- 39:39Because he needs to be knocked down a peg and going, great, he got a fucking,
- 39:44his biggest hit is this movie.
- 39:45People are going to be sucking on it left and right. And he's like,
- 39:48yeah, now he's going to do more of this shit.
- 39:50He needs to be brought down a peg and the people who so-called fans need to
- 39:55really go, you know what?
- 39:56This wasn't your best work, pal. Do something different.
- 40:00Because he's just going to keep, this next one is going to be a disaster.
- 40:02I guarantee you. So basically what you're saying is they need to be more like me.
- 40:08In my view that I've given no no you're sucking on the teeth you're sucking
- 40:12on the teeth pretty good no no I'm being honest I promise I'm not sucking on
- 40:17the teeth I may have at one point a big you know bushy moustache you know,
- 40:23but it ain't no teeth sucking from me.
- 40:29I don't I'm not nervous to end this please,
- 40:33No, guys, you know, tweets are on. It's the salt band doing good fun.
- 40:36And if you like it, kudos. I'm glad you got something out of it.
- 40:39Like I said at the beginning of the podcast, I'm glad it did well because I
- 40:42want to see more horror films. I want to see Independent do well.
- 40:45So if you assholes want to pay more money to see this shit, that's fine.
- 40:50As long as it green-lits better movies, fine.
- 40:53Go for it. But at the end of the day, I promise you, if you've seen this once and you go, oh my God,
- 40:59this is brilliant, but you're sitting at home one night and you're watching
- 41:01again on Video On Demand, which is out today I believe if you watch it on video
- 41:06on demand and you're at home you're going to go maybe I,
- 41:09kind of like what you said I was lost, I was all excited to go see Edgar's Nosferatu
- 41:13but then once the dust settles,
- 41:16and you watch this again I promise you, you'll understand what I was saying,
- 41:21but it does look gorgeous on the screen but anyway,
- 41:25that's all we got we're going to wrap this up and it's time to have some more
- 41:29fun guys that's right, retrospective time and we're coming hard with the Chuckies.
- 41:35I shouldn't have said it that way by the way. That's how I came out wrong.
- 41:40It's Chuckies. It's Chuckies time. Child's Play Retrospective.
- 41:45We'll be talking Child's Play 1 and 2, Child's Play 3 and 4.
- 41:48I think there's 5 and 6. Oh yeah. And then there's the reboot.
- 41:52And then we'll talk a little bit about the TV show. Kind of like what we did
- 41:55with Friday the 13th and The Nightmare on Elm Street. Yes.
- 41:58There'll be a 2-in-1 special. So the first one will feature Child's Play 1 and 2 and that is up next,

- 42:23can I just say one last thing before about sign off oh dear god it's just one
- 42:26word oh dear god providence,
- 42:31The phrase continually used in Nosferatu, Providence!
- 42:36You know what word they should have used? What? Or at least the director?
- 42:41Music.
