- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, a family is rocked when their eldest
- 0:04son inexplicably falls into a coma.
- 0:09Doctors can't find a cause.
- 0:11He's physically perfectly healthy.
- 0:15With his condition stable, he is sent home, where weird things start to happen.
- 0:20Eventually, mom determines the house is haunted, and they move.
- 0:26But it isn't the house.
- 0:28A team of paranormal experts arrives in an attempt to save young Dalton
- 0:34from the Further before it's too late.
- 0:39This is Insidious.
- 0:42This is Xenomania
- 1:03Kearns: I don't know if you guys saw it, but in 1991 there was
- 1:05a movie called The Haunted, and it's got, uh, James Caan in it.
- 1:10Is that his name?
- 1:13No, Jeffrey Damon.
- 1:14Jeffrey Damon.
- 1:15Jon: Jeffrey DeMunn
- 1:16Kearns: in, like, every Stephen King adaptation.
- 1:18he's the dad in it,
- 1:20Ryan: he is
- 1:21Kearns: and it's, it's wild.
- 1:23It's not, like, a very particularly exciting or terrifying movie,
- 1:27but it's just really well done.
- 1:30that's the one where the ghosts, like, travel with the family.
- 1:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:34Kearns: they, they try to move.
- 1:35Yeah, you know Jeffrey Damon.
- 1:36Damont.
- 1:36Damon.
- 1:36Jon: Yeah, you know Jeffrey DeMun.
- 1:39DeMun,
- 1:41Kearns: I mean
- 1:41Ryan: It's one of those, like, you hear the name, you
- 1:43kinda like, "I know the name."
- 1:47Can't
- 1:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:48Christmas Evil
- 1:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:52What were your, um, what were your silly… Oh, Christmas Evil.
- 1:55What were your, like, kind of haunted movies from back then?
- 2:01I'm talking, like, '85.
- 2:03Well, Ryan wasn't born yet, but, um, like, early '90s.
- 2:06Ryan: the '90s.
- 2:07Kearns: Early '90s.
- 2:08Ryan: with
- 2:08Kearns: But not, like, great big CGI, know, things.
- 2:13This was a movie that had barely any of that
- 2:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:18Kearns: It was all cabinet doors
- 2:20Jon: There was,
- 2:20Kearns: stuff
- 2:21Jon: there is a movie from, I wanna say 1980-ish with, um,
- 2:26George C. Scott called Changeling.
- 2:30I love that one.
- 2:31Kearns: okay
- 2:32Ryan: that's a good one.
- 2:33Jon: And then, you know, Poltergeist, Amityville
- 2:36Kearns: more popular than The Haunted.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:40Do it with,
- 2:41Jon: The, those are… Yeah, the, the haunted house, haunted
- 2:45person thing wasn't my favorite.
- 2:47Still isn't one of my favorites, but when it's done well, I like it a lot
- 2:55Kearns: I think you'll like… I mean, you probably saw The Haunted.
- 2:57I mean, I think
- 2:58Jon: I'm sure I did
- 2:59Kearns: ran on, like, the Discovery Channel or something
- 3:04Ryan: Haven't seen it.
- 3:06Was it a TV movie?
- 3:07An
- 3:07Kearns: It's a TV movie for sure.
- 3:10Ryan: I could probably find it on
- 3:12Kearns: ran… There was an essay from the ghost.
- 3:15She essays Jeffrey Dahmer, and that's kind of why it got a little bit of an uproar
- 3:20Jon: Hmm.
- 3:21Kearns: the ghost comes downstairs and it's like a young damsel and he's like,
- 3:23"Who are you?" And then she just throws him on the ground and has her way with him
- 3:28Ryan: See, there's a haunted movie from my past that I think of where this
- 3:33woman is, like, an invisible force grabs her, which I'm presuming it's a spirit,
- 3:37and, like, drags her down the steps.
- 3:39But I don't know what movie it was.
- 3:41I was such, like a kid, it creeped me out to the point where I
- 3:44didn't go up the steps for a week.
- 3:46I think it was a TV made movie as well.
- 3:48It
- 3:48Kearns: That's, that's The Haunted.
- 3:50Ryan: of the afternoon.
- 3:51Kearns: Yeah, that's The Haunted
- 3:52Ryan: So I've seen a little bit of it.
- 3:54Yeah,
- 3:54Kearns: It does a good job.
- 3:55It builds, the dread pretty well.
- 3:56It takes its time, and it ends on, like, a really dire note.
- 4:00It's a good movie
- 4:02Ryan: See, I changed the channel 'cause I was like, "Oh, hell no. I gotta put
- 4:05some Batman on." I mean, I was like
- 4:07Kearns: That's a good segue though.
- 4:08Ryan: when it was
- 4:08Kearns: Good segue into our episode tonight, which is
- 4:11on Insidious, the original
- 4:16Ryan: The first,
- 4:17Jon: of now to be six.
- 4:21Now to be six
- 4:23Kearns: Why?
- 4:25Jon: I think that comes out this, I think it comes out the day
- 4:29after we release this episode.
- 4:32Or maybe two weeks.
- 4:33It's, but we're right around the release of
- 4:36Kearns: I
- 4:37Jon: Insidious 6.
- 4:40I mean,
- 4:41I wa- I watched,
- 4:43Kearns: in the box so they
- 4:44Jon: I watched, I watched The Last Key, the fourth one, today.
- 4:48I haven't even watched the fifth one, and this is the first time
- 4:52I'd ever watched The Last Key, and
- 4:54Ryan: the red door
- 4:55Jon: yeah.
- 4:57And I gotta tell you, The Last Key
- 4:58Ryan: And that's what kind of ties it back in, right?
- 5:02Jon: I guess so.
- 5:03I don't, I mean, like, I don't know how much you can really tie… No, because The
- 5:07Red Door is back to the original family storyline, and, Dalton's grown up now.
- 5:15Dalton's, like, in college or something, and Josh is still walking
- 5:20around a free man after a murder
- 5:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:28Oh my God
- 5:29Ryan: they clear it up in the second one.
- 5:31I mean, I feel like this is a movie where, I mean, the second one a good job, but you
- 5:36Jon: Do they clear it up?
- 5:37Ryan: the second one.
- 5:38Jon: Do they clear it up?
- 5:39'Cause I re- I was,
- 5:40Ryan: It was
- 5:40Jon: I had to read 'cause I g- I wasn't gonna watch S- an,
- 5:44uh, uh, Insidious II again.
- 5:47But do they clear it up?
- 5:49'Cause really it, it comes down to, "Oh, there's no forensic
- 5:53evidence. The fingerprints don't match, therefore Josh couldn't
- 5:58have, couldn't have done Elise in."
- 6:03Ryan: He was possessed.
- 6:06S- y- you know, the, if the glove didn't fit, you must
- 6:09Kearns: It's like the, uh, obsession argument.
- 6:11Nikki's in jail.
- 6:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:14Kearns: worst part about Nikki coming back to her body is
- 6:16she gets to do life in prison
- 6:21Ryan: According to some, I think Curry Baker, I think I was mentioning it,
- 6:24he released some promotional stuff.
- 6:26She's in a mental institute at least.
- 6:29So I mean, it's not the worst, but
- 6:30Jon: She's not gonna stay there.
- 6:33They're gonna give… Th- and that, do you know how rarely that
- 6:37actually works as a criminal defense?
- 6:40Kearns: Sanity?
- 6:41Yeah, it's tough.
- 6:41You have to get psycholog- um, numerous
- 6:42Jon: Okay
- 6:43Kearns: to agree that you are
- 6:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:47They, they'll,
- 6:48Ryan: It's the happiest ending
- 6:49Jon: they'll, they'll stick her in an institution and get her
- 6:53medicated and stabilized, and then they'll put her on trial.
- 6:57That's what they do.
- 6:58she's still going to jail
- 7:01Kearns: Going to jail.
- 7:02Nikki's going to jail
- 7:04Ryan: There goes the happy ending then.
- 7:07Jon: I mean
- 7:07Kearns: gonna, we're gonna jump over that because the actress is
- 7:10getting a lot of attention lately.
- 7:12Um, so Insidious.
- 7:16Yeah, he got it.
- 7:16He finally got it.
- 7:18Insidious.
- 7:19I feel like this movie-- First of all, the best part of this movie is the
- 7:22opening credit with the title screen,
- 7:24Ryan: Oh, yeah
- 7:25Kearns: and I remember everybody laughed in the theater when it came up,
- 7:28and I was like, "Oh, no, that's cool.
- 7:30That's cool.
- 7:30S-
- 7:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:31Kearns: guys need to get cultured." uh, the first 35
- 7:35minutes of this movie are great
- 7:38Are you…
- 7:39Jon: They're good.
- 7:40Kearns: Okay.
- 7:41Jon: They're good.
- 7:41They're good, eh?
- 7:43Ryan: with you.
- 7:43Kearns: the, like the scaries
- 7:45Ryan: Yep
- 7:45Kearns: and the hou- there's something wrong with the house, and then that kid,
- 7:48and the stupid music, and all that stuff.
- 7:50That was all, like, very…
- 7:51Ryan: top
- 7:51Kearns: And it was also something we hadn't seen in a horror film
- 7:55for quite some time, horror film.
- 7:58So it was kind of refreshing back then to be like, "Ooh, ooh, ooh."
- 8:02And it gets a little wonky from there
- 8:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:05I mean, it, it pretty quickly fall, for me at least, falls into
- 8:08that conjuring sort of playbook
- 8:13Kearns: Is The Conjuring before Insidious or after?
- 8:16Jon: I think the first Conjuring was before
- 8:19Kearns: Oh.
- 8:21Ryan: I
- 8:21Kearns: I thought it was after
- 8:22Ryan: uh, Conjuring's after.
- 8:24Conjuring came out in 2013
- 8:29Kearns: I got so confused by it, uh, because the main actor, the
- 8:32dad obviously… What is his name?
- 8:35Jon: Josh
- 8:35Ryan: Wilson.
- 8:36Jon: Olson
- 8:37Kearns: He, he annoys me.
- 8:38Ryan: Uh, 2013.
- 8:39Kearns: Wilson and yeah, he, he was a g- he was awful in, um… Oh my God, I can't
- 8:46remember any of the names of these movies.
- 8:48Ryan: Aquaman?
- 8:49Kearns: First of all, I'm sure he was.
- 8:51I didn't see him in Aquaman though.
- 8:53He was awful in, uh, the Watchers.
- 8:56Ryan: Master
- 8:58Kearns: Is that what it's called?
- 8:58Watchmen, Watchmen.
- 9:01Ryan: Watchers?
- 9:02Kearns: Yeah, he plays the owl guy
- 9:05Ryan: Ni- uh, we got Nite
- 9:06Kearns: Yeah, he's, he's…
- 9:07Ryan: He wasn't that bad.
- 9:08He did a good
- 9:08Kearns: He was terrible.
- 9:10He was terrible.
- 9:11He's been lukewarm.
- 9:12He's, he's literally like a bath that's too cold.
- 9:16Every time I see him in a movie, that's what the experience is like.
- 9:19It's like, "Ah, man, this could've been good." But he's… Yeah.
- 9:23In this, I mean, in Insidious, he does a decent job.
- 9:26In The Conjuring movies, he annoys the hell out of me
- 9:31Jon: Yeah
- 9:32Ryan: I know that's what you want though for the tone of this movie is that
- 9:35distancing though the movie progresses
- 9:39Kearns: I feel like John has a,
- 9:40Ryan: develops
- 9:41Kearns: has thoughts too.
- 9:44Jon: No, you guys keep going because I'm gonna trash, I'm gonna
- 9:47trash this movie eventually, but
- 9:51You guy-
- 9:51Kearns: We're trying to
- 9:52Jon: you guys keep going.
- 9:52Keep going.
- 9:53Kearns: resisting pretty well
- 9:55Jon: Mm-hmm, and 'cause once I get started I'm not gonna stop.
- 9:57This is go- I- so this was the third or fourth time I've
- 10:02s- I've watched Insidious.
- 10:04I was late watching it because of the hype 'cause I, I kinda, I had seen
- 10:10trailers, I had seen the PG-13 rating.
- 10:16I was very, very lukewarm on the concept of Insidious in the
- 10:21first place, and finally Allison talked me into watching it.
- 10:25I thought it was good.
- 10:26The first time I watched it, it was very effective.
- 10:29Kearns: Things
- 10:29Jon: Second time,
- 10:30Kearns: right?
- 10:31Jon: second time very effective.
- 10:33Th- this time I didn't… This, it missed me so hard this time, and even,
- 10:42even Allison, who loved it the first couple times we watched it, she sat in
- 10:45for, like, the last 45 minutes, finished up, and she looked at me and she said,
- 10:49"I forgot how dumb this movie is"
- 10:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:53Well, once they reveal the demon, it gets to
- 10:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:57Kearns: kind of hokey.
- 10:58He's like a Zulu warrior, and he's,
- 11:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:01Kearns: just
- 11:02Ryan: it
- 11:04Kearns: looks ridiculous.
- 11:05Looks ridic- whatever they were going for with him is bizarre.
- 11:07I don't know if he's supposed to be like, know, from Babylon or something.
- 11:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:12Kearns: what… He's insane.
- 11:14His first reveal is cool, and then, and
- 11:16Jon: Mm-hmm
- 11:17Kearns: see him, the less cool he is.
- 11:19Jon: Yeah
- 11:20Ryan: With, with the sharp nails, Freddy Krueger-like
- 11:23Kearns: The ultra white teeth
- 11:24Ryan: uh.
- 11:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:26Like,
- 11:27Ryan: he creeped me out
- 11:28Jon: where he, the most effective he is in the, the movie is the one scene
- 11:33that everybody has seen, you know, where he just appears behind Josh.
- 11:38Kearns: Yeah
- 11:40Jon: Like, that, that's the best he looks in the whole movie, and it, it's
- 11:44funny because I, I'd not noticed it before, but one of the scenes of Josh
- 11:48in the school grading papers, there's a face drawn on the whiteboard behind
- 11:53him, and it's that face just in, you know, whatever marker color and the board
- 12:00Ryan: I thought it was, uh, Jigsaw.
- 12:01Jon: I think it's him.
- 12:03I mean, it,
- 12:03Ryan: Oh, I
- 12:04Jon: I, I mean, maybe it's supposed to be Jigsaw, but whatever it's supposed to be.
- 12:07I mean, that's, whatever Easter egg nod that is, is all right.
- 12:12But then, like, even, even Josh working becomes very hard to believe
- 12:21Hey, c- how, how many teachers do you know work until 10:30 grading papers
- 12:28Kearns: That was
- 12:28Jon: at school?
- 12:29Kearns: least
- 12:30Jon: school
- 12:31Kearns: for me as well
- 12:33Ryan: That's an excuse.
- 12:34Kearns: trying to stay away from the house.
- 12:36Yeah, another bad dad
- 12:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:38Yeah, he's…
- 12:39Ryan: He even-
- 12:40Jon: Josh is not a good dad for all but, like, 20 minutes of the movie when he's
- 12:46in the Further trying to rescue Dalton.
- 12:48He's a bad dad
- 12:50Ryan: What about the beginning?
- 12:51He's pretty good to help them with, like, the breakfast, make sure they're good.
- 12:56Jon: I mean, like,
- 12:56Kearns: He's not a scumbag, but he's a bad
- 12:58Jon: yeah, but that, that's like bare minimum dad too.
- 13:02Like, I made sure you had food.
- 13:05I didn't l- I didn't,
- 13:06Ryan: a
- 13:06Jon: I didn't let you go to school hungry.
- 13:08Like, congratulations dad.
- 13:11Congratulations.
- 13:13Uh, but like he d- he doesn't believe anybody.
- 13:17He's so, so dismissive of Renee every time she brings something up.
- 13:24He finally agrees to move for her
- 13:27Kearns: That's very tropey for the, the new mother thing, the new mother
- 13:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:31Kearns: thing that, uh, men do, and I will stand up for the ladies on this one.
- 13:35When is, like, a thing, and it's very clear Josh is not good at, helping her
- 13:42through it or handling anything, like, that's going on with the haunting thing.
- 13:46And but it seems to me like it could be a giant metaphor for
- 13:49that part of the whole raising a family, that little section of it
- 13:56And he's just running away because he doesn't wanna deal with her?
- 14:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:03Yeah
- 14:05Ryan: Yeah, I can see
- 14:05Kearns: I mean, it's, it's a hard sell on YouTube because you haven't
- 14:08seen it, but I, I've lived through it partially, um, I see where, like, other
- 14:16people do this similar thing that Josh does, it's like not addressing your
- 14:21problems, thinking your wife's crazy,
- 14:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:25Kearns: that stuff.
- 14:27I'm kinda going left here.
- 14:28How about astral projection, guys?
- 14:32Jon: Yeah, I, I don't, I'm not even really sure that's the right phrase.
- 14:37Is it?
- 14:38Is that r- is he really astral projecting?
- 14:42Sort of?
- 14:43Is… I mean, the first w-
- 14:45Kearns: yeah, force consciousness out
- 14:48Jon: But like, the first part of this definition is an
- 14:52intentional out-of-body experience.
- 14:56Dalton's not doing it intentionally, I don't think.
- 14:58He's just falling asleep and, and projecting.
- 15:02I think, I think they, they seem to like, through the whole franchise, they
- 15:06seem to sort of drop the intentional part of it, and it's just like, "Ah,
- 15:10it's, I see dead things and I, I
- 15:13Kearns: you got a point
- 15:13Jon: travel through astral planes."
- 15:18Uh, you know,
- 15:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:20Jon: I guess there's not really…
- 15:21Kearns: you're right.
- 15:22Jon: I mean, I guess there's not really anything else to call it.
- 15:26Like, what else would it be?
- 15:31Ryan: I mean, I mean, it can happen accidentally.
- 15:34It's been, I, uh, remember from some movies that where there's
- 15:38accidental astral projection or even in like X-Men comics where the
- 15:42mutant can project themselves and it's like they learn the powers.
- 15:45It's an accident, and it's on purpose.
- 15:47I mean, not knowing you're doing it in a dream state, I can, can believe it.
- 15:52Jon: Well, I, can get behind it if we wanna call it real- like true astral
- 15:56projection, fine, but by every definition I've found, it's intentional, and
- 16:03nobody in this movie until Josh at the end is intentionally astral projecting
- 16:12Ryan: But is it intentional at the end?
- 16:13'Cause he does have to go under a little hypnosis
- 16:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:17But he's, he's purposely trying, he's purposely trying to do it.
- 16:21He's not doing it necessarily freely, but he's trying to do it at that
- 16:28point because, uh, you know, it-
- 16:31Ryan: Fair enough.
- 16:35Jon: But it, you know, it, I think that, that's just a small
- 16:40quibble with this movie, I think.
- 16:41If you wanna call it astral projection, fine
- 16:45Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say that's really not, as far as
- 16:47the gripes list goes, that's not
- 16:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:49Kearns: it.
- 16:49In fact, the
- 16:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:53Kearns: hyped.
- 16:54Was it just a great marketing campaign?
- 16:57Jon: I, it must have been.
- 16:59I don't, I can't fully remember what the marketing campaign is or was.
- 17:04I, you know, but it got so much, like, mainstream hype too.
- 17:11It, this wasn't just, like, horror nerds going wild for Insidious.
- 17:16This was, like, mainstream people.
- 17:17This was people telling me, "Oh, you have to see Insidious,"
- 17:21who I know don't watch horror
- 17:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:25I'm telling you, it was so long since… The, the period of time between when we
- 17:29got a decent horror release before this,
- 17:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:32Kearns: a Saw movie or something like that.
- 17:35This was the f- it felt like the first horror movie that came out in forever
- 17:38when it, when it hit, for me anyway
- 17:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:42Ryan: I feel like it was everywhere.
- 17:43In 2010, it was just everywhere, and I… I mean, when it came out on DVD,
- 17:47'cause I don't think… It didn't take that long to be released on DVD for
- 17:51some reason, 'cause of the popularity, and I yanked it and I was, like, so
- 17:55happy to watch it because, I mean, it was still hyped after a few months,
- 17:59and I get to understand, like, what the hype is and what James Wan was doing.
- 18:04I mean, he's going from the Hulk, and then he's doing Insidious, this darker horror
- 18:09film, and you can see more of his chops in
- 18:11Jon: Well, he, I mean, he,
- 18:13Ryan: opened the
- 18:13Jon: he did have some horror in between too.
- 18:16Like he did, um, Dead Silence.
- 18:20Ryan: Dead Silence was
- 18:21Jon: Yeah, Dead Silence was like '07.
- 18:25So like he, he had sort of entered that realm, you know, and, and Saw too.
- 18:31Like Saw was him, so like he'd done horror.
- 18:35but I think, it was just sort of… I think it's probably the accessibility
- 18:41because Insidious is pretty accessible.
- 18:45You can watch this with, you know, relatively young family members.
- 18:49You can watch this with, you know, y- your parents and nothing
- 18:53terrible, so terrible is gonna happen that it's gonna be uncomfortable.
- 18:57You know, if you watch it with kids who are too young, they're probably
- 19:00gonna be a little scared for a bit, but
- 19:03Kearns: Yeah, probably.
- 19:05Jon: It's a he
- 19:07Ryan: I was scared.
- 19:08I
- 19:09Jon: I see, I, I
- 19:11Ryan: A
- 19:11Jon: remem- I remember that it sort of, it sort of did what Blair Witch
- 19:17did in the buildup when I first saw it
- 19:23It had that, it had that Blair Witch thing
- 19:28Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:29you're
- 19:30Jon: you know, they, they, they build, they build so, and they,
- 19:33they build some good tension in spots, but it, I don't know.
- 19:38That whole, that whole last half hour really doesn't connect
- 19:42Ryan: about it See, I feel like it does though, it, like, it sets it up nicely
- 19:47where you understand why Josh is having such a hard time, and then when Elise is
- 19:54introduced, it connects that whole thing.
- 19:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:57Yeah, no, I, I
- 19:58Ryan: we get to the opening, we just see the kid, and we just see, you know
- 20:02Jon: Yeah.
- 20:03Kearns: opinion, I feel like Elise is the death knell of this movie
- 20:09I, I, every time she's involved in the movie, it gets worse
- 20:12Jon: I mean, I mean
- 20:15Ryan: Is it the gas mask?
- 20:16Kearns: Just everything about her character.
- 20:18Jon: gas mask is like,
- 20:20Kearns: fake ugly
- 20:20Jon: I feel like they're just like pumping stuff into that gas mask while she's
- 20:25in there, and she's tripping and like
- 20:28Kearns: Art
- 20:29Jon: talking to, talking to imaginary…
- 20:32Ryan: Tucker's farts
- 20:33Jon: Yeah, Specs' farts
- 20:36Kearns: She's…
- 20:41Oh my God
- 20:42Ryan: f- that's like the best part of that scene is I feel like Josh,
- 20:46um, Patrick Wilson is just like, "What the hell is going on?" And he's
- 20:50like trying to believe and support his wife, uh, Rose Byrne's Renee.
- 20:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:56Ryan: is very into it and like, "What the hell's going on?" But to know whether
- 21:02Elise is selling, um, snake oil, you know, in which Josh believes that's what she's
- 21:09doing in the beginning until it's revealed that there are real happenings happening,
- 21:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:14Ryan: know.
- 21:15That was a nice little turn too as well
- 21:17Jon: Well, when Elise shows up, I, like, I don't doubt that she's legit.
- 21:24Like, I- she's a leg- she, I mean, she leg- shows up pretty legit.
- 21:29I like… But it doesn't, it doesn't work.
- 21:32I, no, but, like, it- it's the way they introduce her before she shows up.
- 21:38It's Josh's mom saying,
- 21:40Ryan: Fair
- 21:40Jon: and Josh's mom saying, "I've worked, I- I've, I know this person.
- 21:44I know," like, "She helped, she helped me." You know, that kind of thing.
- 21:48But, you know, it, she, she's not an original character,
- 21:53and I think that's kind of the thing that people lose in this.
- 21:56That's not, like, a unique, original character.
- 22:01That is 100% Zelda Rubenstein from Poltergeist.
- 22:05Kearns: Yes.
- 22:07Only she's not a, like a midget, and
- 22:09Jon: Yeah,
- 22:09Kearns: fun.
- 22:10Jon: that, that t- that team, that team is Poltergeist.
- 22:17Like, Specs and Tucker are Zelda Rubenstein's partners in, in Poltergeist.
- 22:23Like, and it, it,
- 22:25Ryan: If you look at it like that,
- 22:26Jon: it t- it, I think that's part, you know, we'll get to how we all feel about
- 22:31this much later, but I think that's part of what hurt this viewing experience
- 22:37for me, is really this time connecting with, it, it with Poltergeist in that
- 22:44way, and being not, it doesn't measure up
- 22:47Kearns: Yeah
- 22:50Ryan: But does the remake measure up?
- 22:54Jon: The remake of Poltergeist?
- 22:57Ryan: Yes
- 22:59Jon: Measure up to what?
- 23:00Insidious or Poltergeist?
- 23:02Ryan: to, to poltergeist.
- 23:03'Cause you're
- 23:04Jon: hell
- 23:05Kearns: are you asking,
- 23:05Jon: n- hell no.
- 23:06That,
- 23:07Kearns: are
- 23:07Jon: that, that remake i- that's a bottom of the barrel remake.
- 23:11Like,
- 23:12Ryan: So the reason,
- 23:13Jon: I, it, and that one won't even, that one, that opinion
- 23:16won't even get me in trouble like my Dawn of the Dead opinion does
- 23:20Ryan: The reason why I bring it up is you can at least admit that
- 23:23Insidious did a better job remaking Poltergeist in its own vision compared
- 23:28to the actual remake of Poltergeist.
- 23:30That's where I was heading with
- 23:31Jon: Okay, I mean, sure.
- 23:34Sure, but what, what's the bar there?
- 23:37We c- we got, we're better than w- uh, a, an awful remake
- 23:42Kearns: Can you imagine we, we get to a point, we're elderly, we're in,
- 23:45like, the nursing home, and they're like, "All right. All right, fellas,
- 23:47we're gonna go on a little field trip to the movies today. They made a remake
- 23:51of Insidious," and we all choose to simultaneously die, like, right in
- 23:55that moment, 'cause that's… Well, I mean, what are they gonna remake?
- 23:58What are the movies that are like Poltergeist that are coming
- 24:00out d- over the last 20 years?
- 24:02None
- 24:03Jon: I mean, they may not even be remaking Insidious.
- 24:06They might just still be making Insidious movies
- 24:10Kearns: All right, before we get into the fact that we hate that they just keep
- 24:13making these movies, let's play a game
- 24:16Jon: Let's, play a game.
- 24:17I have a new game for us tonight.
- 24:20I ca- I, I, I thought about this one.
- 24:22I couldn't figure out what I wanted the game for tonight to
- 24:25be, so I invented a new one.
- 24:28And this, this game has a name, and I'm going to call it Shay or Nay
- 24:37I'm gonna show you guys movies, and you're gonna tell me is Lynn Shay in this
- 24:41movie or is Lynn Shay not in this movie?
- 24:44So Shay or nay
- 24:49Ryan: Okay.
- 24:49Jon: Okay.
- 24:50Do we got it?
- 24:51Kearns: Day
- 24:53Jon: Is Lin, is Lin Shay in Nightmare on Elm Street?
- 25:00Turns you said nay?
- 25:01Kearns: wrong answer.
- 25:01Uh, Shay.
- 25:03Ryan: Uh, what?
- 25:04Kearns: no, Ryan said Nay
- 25:07Ryan: What?
- 25:07No, she is the teacher in this film.
- 25:09Kearns: said before
- 25:13Ryan: Give it to him.
- 25:13Give it to him, Josh.
- 25:15Jon: I, I mean, I'll give it to him.
- 25:16Ryan: out
- 25:17Jon: I d- I don't, I don't, I don't mind.
- 25:19I don't mind.
- 25:19So yes
- 25:20Kearns: give it to me.
- 25:21That is a full on lie.
- 25:22I said nay.
- 25:23I said nay.
- 25:24I, I do not
- 25:25Jon: Lynn, Lynn Shay is in Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 25:33All right.
- 25:34Movie number two.
- 25:35Ryan: is again the
- 25:36Jon: or nay?
- 25:38Liar, Liar
- 25:39Kearns: tonight, I told you
- 25:42Ryan: They did like
- 25:44Kearns: Shay.
- 25:45She's the secretary
- 25:49Jon: Ryan
- 25:51Ryan: Shit
- 25:54Jon: W- was that a sh- was that a Shea Ryan?
- 25:57Ryan: Yeah, she is.
- 25:58She's a shay, shay.
- 26:00That is a shay.
- 26:01Jon: It's an A.
- 26:02Ryan: The pen is blue.
- 26:03Jon: It's an A.
- 26:04Kearns: her?
- 26:04Who's the old
- 26:05Jon: It's an A.
- 26:06Ryan: How the…
- 26:07Jon: It's an A
- 26:08Ryan: You convinced me on
- 26:09Kearns: I know.
- 26:09I'm bringing you down with me, buddy
- 26:11Ryan: is,
- 26:12Jon: I think
- 26:12Ryan: pen is blue.
- 26:13Jon: good.
- 26:14It, it, we'll cir- we'll circle back to Jim.
- 26:18All right.
- 26:20Movie number three, The Toy.
- 26:25Cher or nay?
- 26:26Kearns: I have no idea if she's in it or not.
- 26:29No idea if she's in it or not.
- 26:31Uh, I'm gonna go with Shay because why wouldn't she be?
- 26:36Jon: This is an A.
- 26:39Kearns: Ah.
- 26:39Jon: is not in the toy.
- 26:42Kearns: it's
- 26:42Jon: Yay
- 26:43Kearns: harder to get a zero, but I'm gonna try it tonight.
- 26:48Jon: Listen, this game, this game kinda roughed Allison up the other
- 26:51night too, so this is a tough one
- 26:54Kearns: I don't even know what she looks like
- 26:58Jon: She's kind of always looked like what she looked like in
- 27:01S- in Insidious, just younger.
- 27:04Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:05Jon: Um, all right
- 27:06Ryan: It's like, um, what's Jessica Lange?
- 27:09Jon: Yeah, kind of.
- 27:10Kearns: example
- 27:11Jon: Kind of, yeah.
- 27:12All right, next movie.
- 27:15The Critters
- 27:18Ryan: Shay
- 27:18Kearns: Nay
- 27:20Jon: Oh,
- 27:21Ryan: What you,
- 27:21Jon: Kearns, we just watched this.
- 27:24Ryan: watched
- 27:25Kearns: for zero now.
- 27:26Jon: This is a shame
- 27:27Kearns: be perfect one way or another
- 27:30Ryan: She plays Sally
- 27:32Jon: This is a Shay.
- 27:36Kearns: Turning this
- 27:36Jon: All right.
- 27:37Number five, Rooster's Millions
- 27:42Kearns: Well, you already tricked us with a prior earlier
- 27:48That's a Shay
- 27:50Jon: That
- 27:51Ryan: There's a shay
- 27:52Jon: is a shay.
- 27:54Kearns: I thought Ryan was wrong.
- 27:55Damn it
- 27:58Jon: Sorry, no perfection tonight.
- 28:00Now you have to mount the comeback
- 28:02Kearns: Yeah, there's no shot.
- 28:04The
- 28:04Jon: The Running Man, Shea Ornay
- 28:07Kearns: she in, like, a leotard in this?
- 28:10Ryan: Sadly not.
- 28:11Kearns: Sadly, uh
- 28:14Ryan: Shay
- 28:17Kearns: Um, I always look at the bottom, see if I can cheat.
- 28:20Richard Bachman.
- 28:22No, that's not her.
- 28:24Ah,
- 28:24Jon: But yeah, Fat Cotto.
- 28:27It is a shit
- 28:30Ryan: small part
- 28:31Jon: You do.
- 28:31Most of these are pretty small parts, guys
- 28:34Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:34She wasn't, you know what I learned is she's not, she's an underappreciated
- 28:39actress who's done so much for movies, and I feel like she hasn't really gotten
- 28:44her big star except for like Insidious and I feel like Alone in the Dark
- 28:50Jon: Yeah.
- 28:50Ryan: from the early '80s.
- 28:52I think
- 28:52Jon: Yeah
- 28:53Ryan: queen for that one.
- 28:54So I mean
- 28:55Jon: Yeah.
- 28:57Alone in the Dark is okay.
- 28:59All right, next.
- 29:02Sharene Cujo
- 29:04Ryan: Nay
- 29:06Jon: What did you say, Kurtz?
- 29:07Kearns: said nay
- 29:08Jon: Nay.
- 29:09This is a nay.
- 29:11This is a nay
- 29:13Ryan: 4K edition later this year from Arrow.
- 29:17Kearns: Ooh.
- 29:17Ryan: You can eat the,
- 29:19Kearns: I can't get through
- 29:19Jon: I mean…
- 29:20Ryan: will
- 29:20Kearns: anymore.
- 29:21I tried to
- 29:21Jon: I don't think I can do this anymore
- 29:23Kearns: just doesn't do it for me these days
- 29:25Jon: I don't, I don't think I could get through this again
- 29:32All right.
- 29:33Next, True Lies
- 29:36Kearns: She be in this?
- 29:38Ryan: Nay.
- 29:38Kearns: it Tom Arnold's wife or something?
- 29:45I'm gonna go with Ney as well.
- 29:46I can't even imagine who she is in this
- 29:48Jon: It's an A. You know what I
- 29:50Ryan: thought you were gonna She's the Man.
- 29:52I was gonna be like, "What part?" Seen
- 29:54Jon: Y-
- 29:54Ryan: movie
- 29:55Jon: know what I stumbled on when I was looking for this picture?
- 30:00There was a CBS TV series in 2023.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:07Kearns: Huh
- 30:08Jon: Yeah.
- 30:09Uh, I mean, it appears to be.
- 30:11I didn't go super digging, but the, the promo photos are
- 30:16all very Arnold and Jamie Lee
- 30:22Kearns: Cool
- 30:22Ryan: like
- 30:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:23Ryan: when they redid Lethal Weapon,
- 30:25Jon: Yeah.
- 30:25It, yeah,
- 30:26Ryan: work.
- 30:27Jon: it, it
- 30:28Ryan: work.
- 30:28Jon: w-,
- 30:28Ryan: had
- 30:28Jon: yeah
- 30:32Ryan: I, when they replaced Ricks
- 30:35Jon: I, I watched a lot more of that than I care to admit, but yeah, it wasn't great
- 30:43Ryan: Eh, Okay, homage.
- 30:46Jon: Yeah.
- 30:47Okay might be stretching it too at the end of the day
- 30:50Ryan: I'm, I'm being kind, yes.
- 30:53Jon: I'm not being kind to things tonight, clearly.
- 30:56Um, all right, next.
- 30:59Sharon A., Halloween 3
- 31:01Kearns: one.
- 31:02Uh, Sinéad.
- 31:04Jon: Nay.
- 31:06We're not, we're not taking the T and the F
- 31:08Ryan: Shay?
- 31:10Jon: So Ryan is sharing this one.
- 31:12Kearns
- 31:12Ryan: I'll go with Shay.
- 31:13The Shayt
- 31:14Kearns: with nay for all the marbles
- 31:16Jon: This, this is an A. There is no Lin Shaye in Halloween III
- 31:24Believe this is the last one right here
- 31:27Ryan: fine with that.
- 31:28Fine with that.
- 31:29Jon: All right, next movie.
- 31:31Kearns: hope of catching him.
- 31:32Jon: Stay or nay?
- 31:35Dumb and Dumber
- 31:41Ryan: Shay.
- 31:43Shay
- 31:46Kearns: Who is she in it, Ryan?
- 31:49Ryan: Sh- uh, Mrs., uh,
- 31:50Jon: She's the lady with the pen
- 31:52Ryan: Mrs. Mulligan's her name.
- 31:54Yes
- 31:55Kearns: In Dumb and Dumber?
- 31:57Ryan: Yes.
- 31:58Kearns: Is it Mulligan?
- 31:59Oh yeah, it's right, the… That's right, dude.
- 32:04Uh, and Shay
- 32:06Jon: The days of the Shay.
- 32:08Ryan bounces back from his previous, his previous loss in our pinpoint
- 32:15game and takes this one eight-six.
- 32:19Good job, Ryan
- 32:20Kearns: nice.
- 32:21I came back, I came back within two?
- 32:23That's
- 32:24Jon: Yeah, you got within two.
- 32:26You got within two on that one
- 32:30Kearns: Wild.
- 32:32And they were all guesses.
- 32:33Ryan: last
- 32:34Kearns: All guesses.
- 32:36Oh
- 32:36Ryan: Doing all the work last week and then you guess right
- 32:38on the Amityville or close to it
- 32:43I actually came up in my, uh, search engine today was Amityville toilet.
- 32:48I
- 32:48Jon: B-
- 32:48Ryan: like, "Huh.
- 32:49Jon: Yep.
- 32:50Kearns: Is that a
- 32:50Jon: I have that.
- 32:51Kearns: They're
- 32:52Jon: I bought that
- 32:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 32:55Jon: It might, I mean, it might have come up because I keep s- I sent, I may
- 32:59have sent you that link at some point too, 'cause I definitely bought that.
- 33:04Ryan: Just gonna have a movie night.
- 33:06Just a, just a movie night and put a random B movie on.
- 33:11See how that goes
- 33:13Jon: Yeah.
- 33:13Kearns: Indeed.
- 33:14We could indeed
- 33:18Jon: Yeah
- 33:18Kearns: we could talk about how we're so tired of these damn characters.
- 33:23not as tired of these characters in this franchise as I am
- 33:26the ones in The Conjuring.
- 33:29Ryan: Yeah
- 33:30Kearns: crap in that also pisses me
- 33:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:32Well
- 33:33Ryan: I feel like they lose the steam by film and when it comes to The Conjuring,
- 33:38but with the Insidious films, I feel like it's fresh air because you get
- 33:42the prequels and then the third one is more of a Insidious spinoff in a
- 33:48way, but just with the title of III,
- 33:52Jon: Hmm.
- 33:52I, I mean
- 33:54Ryan: on Elise and Specs and Tucker
- 33:56Jon: I definitely have character fatigue for sure because, like, I
- 34:01mean, whether you think Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are good in this,
- 34:06Lin Shaye is good in the… We see, we've seen those characters so many
- 34:11times in the 16 years since Insidious came out, 17 year, whatever it is.
- 34:18We've seen them so, so much.
- 34:22We s- Patrick Wilson is basically living in this genre half of his life
- 34:27now anyway, in these, like, haunted house person ghosty things, you know?
- 34:34And then James Wan and Blumhouse, like it's just… The first
- 34:39Insidious is not a Blumhouse, but-
- 34:44Kearns: You
- 34:45Jon: Yeah,
- 34:45Kearns: were
- 34:46Jon: I did.
- 34:46Kearns: Yeah
- 34:47Jon: I know.
- 34:47I saw, I saw.
- 34:49I just got, I just got a, a, "The recording has started" message.
- 34:53Kearns: Oh, boy
- 34:54Jon: Yeah.
- 34:56Ryan: Zoe, we're shaking our heads.
- 34:57It's
- 34:58Jon: those storms that came through tonight messed up my internet, I think
- 35:02Kearns: It's okay.
- 35:03So do you think that we would be less l- lukewarm, lukewarm might
- 35:07be kind, less lukewarm on this movie if it was a standalone?
- 35:11Would we remember it more fondly
- 35:15Jon: I think I would.
- 35:16I think knowing that they just kept cranking these out, it takes something
- 35:21that when I first saw it felt fresh.
- 35:25You know, maybe not original, but fresh, and now it's just… I mean,
- 35:29it's like everything else that in that sort of similar universe.
- 35:36Like, it's not as many as The Conjuring universe, but it, it's still six of these
- 35:41Kearns: It's a lot
- 35:42Ryan: Yeah.
- 35:43It's too much.
- 35:44I mean, how the first one ends, it's such a great twist, it's like
- 35:50you kinda like, you kind of figure it out in a way after the photo
- 35:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:57Ryan: but it's like when you see it for what it is, it's like wow.
- 36:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:01Ryan: And then him grabbing her, uh, Roseburg on the shoulder, and
- 36:05it's like, oh, this is phenomenal.
- 36:08And I mean, they do a sequel.
- 36:10The sequel's a cash cow just to kinda try to end the story,
- 36:14then you get a prequel, and
- 36:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:17Ryan: you get the spin-off, and then you get a prequel, and then we're
- 36:20going back to the original story 'cause everyone else is going back
- 36:24to the original story, you know?
- 36:26And
- 36:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:27Ryan: with, like, the rumor of a Sinister crossover.
- 36:29I mean, like, there's one, one is enough
- 36:35Jon: See, for me, I think it, the first one ended perfectly because you don't
- 36:42need to go and explain what happens to Josh, especially if what happens
- 36:48to Josh is just, "Oh, we don't have evidence that he strangled Elise."
- 36:55You know, like who else did?
- 36:57Ryan: Different fingerprints.
- 36:58Jon: Who else, who, who, who else strangled Elise?
- 37:01Like it's, like it
- 37:03Ryan: Possession
- 37:05Jon: Okay.
- 37:06Here's what I want you to do, Ryan.
- 37:09Go out tonight and strangle somebody, anybody.
- 37:15Then when you get arrested, say, "I was possessed by a demon," and
- 37:19see how quickly you get released.
- 37:22Ryan: I'm
- 37:23Jon: I-
- 37:24Ryan: to do
- 37:24Jon: Ryan, I will put money in your commissary because
- 37:27you will be there forever
- 37:29Kearns: to a kind of prison that does not have a commissary.
- 37:33Ryan: What?
- 37:34Jon: You want, but they…
- 37:35Kearns: fun one with, uh, the guys from Goodfellas cutting garlic with
- 37:38Jon: Yeah.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:40Like, like we,
- 37:41Ryan: it in there
- 37:42Jon: like we were saying, you, you're not gonna go to a, go
- 37:44to a, a mental institution.
- 37:46You're going to jail.
- 37:48It's almost impossible to win those insanity pleas.
- 37:51You won't win it.
- 37:53Especially, especially one- especially once they wa- go check
- 37:58your viewing history and your recording history and they say, "Oh,
- 38:02this guy just watched Insidious.
- 38:04He's just doing Insidious.
- 38:05He thinks he's gonna get away with it by claiming he was possessed by a demon."
- 38:09Kearns: do you think?
- 38:11You have a 12 wish willow, buddy.
- 38:15You're not getting out of that one.
- 38:16Jon: Nah, you're not getting out.
- 38:18You're go- A- and
- 38:20Ryan: work
- 38:20Jon: so, so I th- I think, but, you know, to sort of go back to where we,
- 38:25I started with this is to me, you can have a really solid first film and
- 38:33mess it up with sequels, and I think Insidious does that right off the…
- 38:38The first sequel messes up the, the franchise because he shouldn't be free.
- 38:43And
- 38:44Kearns: Right
- 38:45Jon: me, I, I, and I mean, they sort of leave that end open a little bit that
- 38:50way for a sequel, but you've also killed off the person you presented as the only
- 38:57person who can, save people from this.
- 39:01So, you know, now if you wanna do anything beyond the two, you have to start
- 39:06getting into prequels and time jumps and whatever, and that's what The Last Key is.
- 39:11The Last Key is a, a prequel.
- 39:14The Last Key ends with h- uh, Elise in bed getting a phone call
- 39:18fr- from Lorraine about Dalton
- 39:23Kearns: Got it.
- 39:23Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 39:25Kearns: I did not watch that
- 39:27Jon: I mean, you don't need to.
- 39:28I don't know why I watched it
- 39:30Ryan: hold on
- 39:34This universe is a little co- so it's one,
- 39:36Jon: This universe is very confusing.
- 39:39Yep.
- 39:39Four is before one, but after three.
- 39:43Ryan: with Halloween
- 39:44Jon: Five is
- 39:45Kearns: it was
- 39:46Jon: f- fifth,
- 39:47Kearns: would make
- 39:47Jon: fifth in order, and I think six is sequentially really gonna be after five.
- 39:55I think if you wanted to watch these in sort of chronological order, you
- 40:01would pro- uh, I don't know, because three's confus- because four starts
- 40:06when, with Elise as a, a child in 1953
- 40:11Kearns: It's four's gotta be the first,
- 40:13Jon: So, but, but then it jumps to, like, right before the events of the first one.
- 40:19So you almost have to watch, like, the first 20 minutes of four, then
- 40:23go to three, then go back to four, and then go to one and then two, and
- 40:30then f- five and then six, I think
- 40:35Kearns: Wow.
- 40:36so
- 40:37Jon: Yeah, we, we have a confusing timeline.
- 40:39We have a c- like, and, uh, just unnecessary sequels to me
- 40:45Kearns: Now, no more spinoffs, no more… 'Cause III is a spinoff, right?
- 40:52Jon: Three is, I mean, it's
- 40:55Kearns: Halloween three, Insidious three.
- 40:58Jon: Three, I feel like three is kind of like the lone
- 41:03gunman episode of The X-Files,
- 41:06Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 41:06Jon: where you're trying to take these characters who you've created and spin
- 41:10them out to something else, and people are just kinda like, "Eh." Like, they're
- 41:16cool, but can they carry a whole series?
- 41:19Can they carry a whole movie?
- 41:22Ryan: Specs and Tucker and like in the Insidious world but
- 41:25make it a little more comedy.
- 41:27I, I, that would've worked.
- 41:28Elise is
- 41:29Jon: Eh,
- 41:29Ryan: they have to figure
- 41:30Jon: it, it would've worked,
- 41:31Ryan: ensues
- 41:32Jon: worked for maybe 30, 45 minutes tops, and then it, it just gets
- 41:37old 'cause what are you gonna do?
- 41:38Kearns: Right?
- 41:39What are you gonna do?
- 41:41Jon: Tucker's gonna,
- 41:42Ryan: comedy
- 41:43Jon: Tucker's gonna walk around with his big thing, his big phallic
- 41:50thing, and like get, get pretend readings in the corner, and Specs
- 41:54is gonna walk around like a nerd.
- 41:56Specs, by the way, is played by Leigh Whannell.
- 42:00So y- y- you get, you get the, the further Blumhouse conjuring universe, yeah,
- 42:08Kearns: said it.
- 42:08Jon: connections.
- 42:09Ryan: There
- 42:10Jon: Uh-huh.
- 42:10Kearns: All
- 42:10Jon: And j- just to throw one more little casting Easter egg, the nurse
- 42:15that's treating Dalton when he's at home is Leigh Whannell's wife
- 42:21Ryan: Oh, that's cool.
- 42:21Jon: So,
- 42:22Ryan: Family affair
- 42:24Jon: I, I mean, sure.
- 42:27Kearns: So we established a spinoff.
- 42:27A spinoff is not gonna work, and 'cause there's
- 42:28Ryan: You're
- 42:28Kearns: no
- 42:29Ryan: insidious
- 42:30Kearns: substance for
- 42:33Ryan: Hello.
- 42:34Kearns: there to be a spinoff that will work.
- 42:35This isn't gonna be Perfect Strangers.
- 42:37What about a crossover with, like, Sinister, a movie that actually was
- 42:40good and nailed it, and was fresh?
- 42:43It also came out around the same time as Insidious, didn't it?
- 42:46Like, not the same year, but it, same era
- 42:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:50Um
- 42:50Kearns: remember thinking Sinister was the superior horror experience compared
- 42:55to the two as well, comparing the two.
- 42:58Would a crossover work?
- 42:59Jon: I don't know, because they've sort of presented in both Sinisters
- 43:03really, they presented the, victimized families as just stubborn and unwilling
- 43:08to seek out that kind of help.
- 43:11Especially Ethan Hawke in the first one.
- 43:13Kearns: But so at least
- 43:16Jon: Ethan Hawke is writing his book.
- 43:18Kearns: rolling up would not accomplish anything
- 43:20Ryan: Yeah
- 43:21Jon: Yeah, I think the most sensible crossover would be with
- 43:24The Conjuring, but then you get the repetition of, Warren and Elise
- 43:33You know, they were basically the same people.
- 43:36Ryan: be their daughter
- 43:37Jon: Yeah, but I mean, it's still sort of the same, like the daughter
- 43:40goes, the daughter goes and seeks out Elise after her mom dies,
- 43:45but Elise would be dead by then
- 43:48Kearns: That's true.
- 43:49Ryan: Mm.
- 43:50Kearns: So Insidious just doesn't work.
- 43:53That's
- 43:54Jon: d- I mean
- 43:55Kearns: It just doesn't work.
- 43:56Ryan: a nice…
- 43:58Kearns: It worked as a
- 43:58Ryan: was an
- 43:59Kearns: standalone film.
- 44:00We'll see what the reviews tell us, but it worked as a standalone film,
- 44:03but as a franchise it's horrific
- 44:08Jon: Yeah
- 44:09Ryan: it was an interesting rumor 'cause, like, the whole idea with the void and
- 44:13stuff, like where does Mr. Boogie go?
- 44:15You know?
- 44:16He's probably in the void or he's in that in between.
- 44:19So like, to connect it wouldn't be hard, but to make it make sense
- 44:25Kearns: how he got back.
- 44:26Ryan: to enjoy
- 44:26Kearns: Yeah, he got back with the kid
- 44:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:32Ryan: but that's what I'm saying with Mr. Boogie being is,
- 44:35Kearns: It didn't kill it
- 44:36Ryan: him into the void.
- 44:37But
- 44:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:38Ryan: I feel
- 44:39Jon: Wait
- 44:39Ryan: being separated is more important 'cause Sinister is definitely a
- 44:42different tone from what Insidious is
- 44:45Kearns: true
- 44:46Jon: Well, you al- you also just like touched on something else about the
- 44:49movie that I wanna rant, I had to rant about too, is Josh, even when he's being
- 44:54a hero, finally being a good dad, going into the Further to, to bring Dalton
- 44:59back out, and gets him most of the way back, and then, "Okay, you finish it.
- 45:06I'm gonna go…
- 45:07I have to go do this," and go stare into a mirror and get possessed himself.
- 45:11Like, you've got, you've come that far.
- 45:14You're not gonna see your child back to his body?
- 45:19Kearns: Yeah,
- 45:19Jon: You're gonna st- you're… Like, what are you doing?
- 45:22That, you're back to bad dad
- 45:25Kearns: Bad dad
- 45:27Ryan: And she warned him, Elise warned him not to talk to any spirits.
- 45:31And right in the get-go, he's like, "Hey, have you seen my son?
- 45:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:35Ryan: you seen him?"
- 45:35Jon: Yeah.
- 45:36Ryan: you doing, dude?"
- 45:37Jon: Yeah, he, I mean, he immediately forgets every instruction he
- 45:40got, and then, okay, fine, you managed to rescue your kid.
- 45:45Finish the job.
- 45:47You haven't defeated the thing that was trying to get your kid.
- 45:50Kearns: Right
- 45:51Jon: just ran away from it
- 45:54Get, finish your job.
- 45:57And that frustrated me so much more this time than it, it did
- 46:01any other time I've seen this
- 46:03Kearns: We can't really argue with you on it.
- 46:05It's just
- 46:06Ryan: I
- 46:06Kearns: true
- 46:09Ryan: I completely forgot about that scene.
- 46:10I was like, "What are you doing?" And then when I see him
- 46:12talking to the Black Bride, I'm
- 46:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:16Ryan: "Why? Why?" Like, why put that in the script?
- 46:20You- because yes, you want a, a shock ending,
- 46:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:24Ryan: there could've been a different way to go along with that.
- 46:27You know what I mean?
- 46:27Like, have him get to his son to the body, and then have that spirit come after him,
- 46:32Jon: I don't,
- 46:32Ryan: go black
- 46:34Jon: I don't even think you had to show that at all.
- 46:37I think, you just bring it out and there's, it's a bigger shock when he
- 46:42does that, when he goes after Elise.
- 46:44It's a much bigger shock.
- 46:47You know?
- 46:48Ryan: that
- 46:49Jon: Y- y- and I, I, like that's the thing.
- 46:52Sometimes you can make a more effective movie or a more
- 46:55effective scene by omission
- 46:58Kearns: Yeah
- 46:59Ryan: True.
- 47:01True
- 47:02Kearns: I mean, it's a fair point.
- 47:03Hey
- 47:04Ryan: A lot of horror films do that,
- 47:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:06Ryan: it, benefits them, I think, most of the time.
- 47:09There are certain movies where it, doesn't, but I think for
- 47:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:13Ryan: omitting it would've worked
- 47:14Jon: But yeah, I mean, it's that spoon-feeding of the audience.
- 47:20And, you know, the… for some people that it works, and for some
- 47:25people it's what you have to do for them to, to be with the movie.
- 47:29And then, yeah, I didn't wanna say it, but yeah.
- 47:33Kearns: have no problem saying it
- 47:35Jon: But, you know, like, we don't, w- we as viewers don't need that, you know?
- 47:41I… But again, I think that goes back to the accessibility, too.
- 47:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:46Jon: You've made this movie at a PG-13 to presumably draw
- 47:51as much audience as you can,
- 47:53Kearns: Which
- 47:54Jon: you know, here, which means if you made a PG-13, you're gonna
- 47:58draw 11 and 12-year-olds, too.
- 48:03So you have to, you have to give them the exposition that they need
- 48:08to understand that part, and then you have the adults who need that, too
- 48:18Kearns: Hmm.
- 48:18Ryan: I understand, but I do notice with the upcoming generation, with getting
- 48:25back into older films and watching the older films where you actually
- 48:28have to build your knowledge, the-- build your knowledge of the story, the
- 48:32characters to know what is happening or realizing, crap, did this happen?
- 48:36And then finding out later it didn't, having that shock value.
- 48:39Jon: Hmm.
- 48:40Ryan: that more, which I appreciate.
- 48:42Jon: I mean, I'll b- I, I'll believe that there's a lot of…
- 48:46Kearns: that
- 48:47Jon: Yeah.
- 48:48I'll believe that there's a lot of younger generations, yeah, seeking out old stuff.
- 48:55I, I don't know.
- 48:56I don't know, I don't know if I necessarily buy that
- 48:59that's happening a lot.
- 49:01I, I s- I see more,
- 49:03Kearns: thing makes me not
- 49:04Jon: yeah
- 49:05Kearns: they can't, they can't even seek things out, let alone hold attention.
- 49:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:11I, I see m- I s-
- 49:13Kearns: Z.
- 49:14Jon: a lot of, like, I see a lot of that.
- 49:18Like, if you, you know, eh, movie groups, horror groups on, on social media,
- 49:24and you look at the posts, like, I was following one for the last couple weeks
- 49:28of, um, the best movie of the 1970s, and the stuff that was getting eliminated
- 49:35in the order it was getting eliminated, and it was like, "What are we doing?
- 49:40What are we…" Like, things like Dog- Dog Day Afternoon were gone, like,
- 49:44the first or second day, and the whole time, every single time, "Eliminate The
- 49:49Godfather, eliminate The Godfather II." Like… So eliminate two movies that are
- 49:56not only among the best of the '70s, but probably among the best movies ever made.
- 50:04But it's because…
- 50:06Ryan: Connection on there?
- 50:07Jon: Yep, that was gone e- pretty early, too.
- 50:10Like, it ca- it came down to Star Wars and The Godfather.
- 50:15One.
- 50:16The Godfather I. It, it's just…
- 50:20Ryan: tell me Godfather won
- 50:21Jon: I, I stopped following.
- 50:22I purposely didn't find the winner because I know it was, I know it was Star Wars.
- 50:26I know it was.
- 50:28And I love Star Wars.
- 50:30I love that whole franchise.
- 50:31I,
- 50:32Ryan: gonna
- 50:32Jon: I love the bad prequels.
- 50:34I love the bad prequels.
- 50:36I love the even worse sequels.
- 50:39But A
- 50:40Kearns: the
- 50:40Jon: n- A New Hope, well, see, th- this is my Star Wars theory, and
- 50:45I'll go a quick, a quick tangent.
- 50:48I think, 'cause you were young when the prequel trilogy came out, so that, that's
- 50:55always been, like, a part of your world.
- 50:58The, the less- the lesser quality of the prequel tr- trilogy has
- 51:02always been a part of your world.
- 51:04It was not always a part of mine.
- 51:06So when I s- first saw, um, Phantom Menace, it was such
- 51:13a massive disappointment
- 51:16Kearns: Yep
- 51:16Jon: because of how good the original trilogy was.
- 51:20Kearns: Yeah
- 51:20Jon: the time, by the time I got to Force Awakens, it was like, "Whatever, this
- 51:25franchise has gone downhill anyway."
- 51:28Kearns: I mean, even still the fact that it, it was going downhill
- 51:31and then it jumped off a cliff.
- 51:33The ninth movie is such a tragedy
- 51:35Jon: Oh yeah, n- nine, nine is a mess.
- 51:37Nine is a mess.
- 51:38Yeah, well,
- 51:39Ryan: garbage.
- 51:40It, uh, uh, it, if they went with the original… Sorry,
- 51:44if they went with the original
- 51:45Kearns: well, I'm gonna t- yeah,
- 51:47Jon: Yeah.
- 51:47Th- th-
- 51:48Ryan: no,
- 51:48Jon: was,
- 51:48Ryan: with,
- 51:48Kearns: Get it out,
- 51:49Jon: this was just a quick advance a theory that, that, that franchise
- 51:52is ruined based on how old you are
- 51:54Kearns: we've been on a tangent for seven minutes, not just that
- 51:57Ryan: they, if they, if, if they followed the Darth Plagueis
- 51:59storyline and ignored Palpatine, it would've been definitely better.
- 52:04that's it
- 52:05Jon: I mean, if, if they had ignored a lot of things, it would've been a lot better
- 52:08Kearns: So we just reviewed every movie but the one we're doing for this episode.
- 52:11Let's review
- 52:12Jon: Yeah, so, so let's get to some reviews.
- 52:14so Rotten Tomatoes, Insidious is a 66% with critics and a 62% audience.
- 52:22So, you know, slightly above average, slightly above good, or slightly good.
- 52:28five stars.
- 52:31"Another horror classic.
- 52:33Freaky A-F, and the performances are great.
- 52:39I watched it when I was nine or 10, and that movie gave me the
- 52:42chills for a long time after that.
- 52:45Whenever I hear someone discussing Three Tiptoe by the Window soundtrack,
- 52:51I still poop my pants years later."
- 52:57Kearns: that they get that checked out
- 53:00Jon: Yeah, I,
- 53:00Ryan: buddy
- 53:01Jon: that, that might be a medical problem, not a movie problem.
- 53:05Kearns: Hmm.
- 53:06Let's get to our
- 53:07Jon: I n- yeah, yeah.
- 53:09One star.
- 53:12"Good elementary level horror for beginners, I suppose.
- 53:16Production elements just feel cheap, and the one infamously good jump scare
- 53:22was ruined for me by the streaming platform using that frame as its intro.
- 53:28So whatever leverage it had there, it lost." Which, uh, you know, y- definitely
- 53:36if you came to this l- if you came to this late, that image of that demon appearing
- 53:43behind Patrick Wilson was in trailers.
- 53:47It's been in, you know, the promo image on streaming platf-
- 53:50It's like you've seen that.
- 53:52If you… It's not as, it's not a jump scare anymore.
- 53:56You know that scene is coming.
- 53:59And one more one star.
- 54:01One star.
- 54:02"Like an unorganized pile of cliches.
- 54:06The horror here is the idea that someone paid for this movie to be made.
- 54:11I've seen scarier episodes of Sesame Street, better written ones too.
- 54:17'You're going to see a lot of confusing things, things you don't understand.'
- 54:22Most accurate dialogue ever."
- 54:28I feel like, I, I feel like Sesame Street kinda catches us stray in there.
- 54:34'Cause Sesame Street's horror stories were pretty legit for stories.
- 54:38Like, I don't know
- 54:43Kearns: Crew,
- 54:44Jon: So
- 54:44Kearns: Sesame Street just because you
- 54:45Jon: yeah.
- 54:47Yeah.
- 54:48So knowing what other people think, gentlemen, what do we think?
- 54:54Kearns: I know I used my blue star last week.
- 54:56No.
- 54:57Okay.
- 54:59Uh,
- 54:59Ryan: Uh,
- 54:59Kearns: I honestly wanna give this thing a 2.75 'cause it is a, it is a touch above
- 55:04average, but I'm knocking it right to just 2.5 because of the franchise crap.
- 55:09I'm so tired of the franchise crap.
- 55:11Just, it's not even worthy a sequel, let alone six movies.
- 55:16Give me a break.
- 55:17I'm so tired of this dumb crap
- 55:22Ryan: Wow.
- 55:23I thought you would go higher, but
- 55:25Kearns: No.
- 55:25Ryan: right.
- 55:25I, I,
- 55:26Kearns: I'm, I'm over it.
- 55:28And the rewatch didn't help.
- 55:29The rewatch made me like it less, it's true
- 55:33Ryan: I'll give it three stars.
- 55:35I'll do three stars.
- 55:37got to give it a little bit more because the first two watches
- 55:41did scare the crap out of me.
- 55:42I do think it holds up well.
- 55:44Watching it again, it didn't scare me as much because, you
- 55:48know, everything that's coming.
- 55:50But James Wan has the beats.
- 55:52I feel like Rose Byrne does a good job.
- 55:54I feel like Patrick Wilson does do a good job being a bad dad.
- 55:58And, you know, the kids are great.
- 56:00The spirits, the world he's created, it's different from, you
- 56:05were saying, Dead Silence and Saw.
- 56:07So it's like he was just like in the waters of everything
- 56:10testing what fit him mostly.
- 56:13And it turned out to be hauntings because then right after it,
- 56:16he did the Conjuring series.
- 56:17He's doing Insidious.
- 56:19Still doing Insidious.
- 56:21But, yeah, I feel like three stars.
- 56:23It's a good opening.
- 56:24You know, you want a good scare.
- 56:25It's PG-13.
- 56:27Watch it Christmas morning.
- 56:29Have fun.
- 56:30Kearns: Okay
- 56:31Jon: morning?
- 56:34I, I, I, I do, I don't usually, but I do wanna push back on something you said.
- 56:41The kid performances were, were good
- 56:45Ryan: They were, they weren't bad.
- 56:46They
- 56:46Jon: They weren't, they weren't anything.
- 56:48They weren't anything.
- 56:50One of them's a baby, the other one's asleep 90% of the movie, and, and the
- 56:56middle child has, like, the one moment where, like, "I don't like it when
- 57:00Dalton gets up and walks at night."
- 57:02Ryan: Perfect.
- 57:03Perfect amount of time.
- 57:06It worked
- 57:07Jon: um,
- 57:07Ryan: worked
- 57:08Jon: I'm gonna go with Currans.
- 57:10This is a 2.5.
- 57:11I, like, uh, the, I, I think the first couple times I watched this, I had this,
- 57:17I had this in, like, maybe a 3.75 range.
- 57:21It's not a 3.75 for me.
- 57:23It's not a three for me anymore.
- 57:25It's a 2.5, and I've, I worry that if I watch it again, it'll be lower.
- 57:30I think there's definitely the fatigue.
- 57:33It, there's definitely the, you know, I've seen this, I've seen how,
- 57:38this type of movie now 100 times.
- 57:41There's the, you know, it, I can't shake how much Poltergeist this movie is
- 57:49Kearns: Yeah, it's a copy.
- 57:51Jon: He,
- 57:51Kearns: it considerably
- 57:54Jon: he, um, I, I, maybe I was willing to overlook it previously.
- 57:57Maybe I just didn't put it together, but it real- the, the poltergeist-ness
- 58:06of Insidious just overwhelmed me this time, and it's just not as good.
- 58:11So yeah, 2.5
- 58:13Ryan: Yeah, I can, I can go on that bandwagon.
- 58:15I, I never really saw the similarities of Poltergeist
- 58:19Insidious until you mentioned it,
- 58:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:21Ryan: and now talking more and I'm thinking about it, it-- very similar.
- 58:26But I-- in my opinion, I don't think it's as bad as the homage to the
- 58:32remake that came out five years later.
- 58:34Kearns: It's true
- 58:35Ryan: I think he does a decent
- 58:37Jon: Yeah, I mean,
- 58:38Ryan: not Poltergeist
- 58:39Kearns: Top fives, let's go, guys.
- 58:42Ryan: Top five poltergeist film.
- 58:44No, I'm joking.
- 58:45Uh, we're gonna do top five Lynn Shay movies tonight, and we're gonna start off
- 58:50Jon: You cheated
- 58:51Ryan: Bruce in one of my favorite comedies, 1998-
- 58:54Kearns: He did cheat.
- 58:55He s- he cheat cheated.
- 58:57He found it
- 58:58Jon: And you had, you had, you had re- you had researched Lynn
- 59:01Shay, so when I popped up Shay or Nay, you had background knowledge
- 59:07Kearns: He did cheat and he still got one wrong
- 59:11Ryan: I s- I did homework.
- 59:13Jon: wrong
- 59:15Ryan: without knowing
- 59:18Kearns: For shame
- 59:20Jon: For shame
- 59:21Ryan: But my number five is for Shay.
- 59:25No, number five is Detroit Rock City.
- 59:27She plays Mrs. Bruce, one of the moms of the four teenage boys in a Kiss
- 59:32tribute band who try to see their idols in a concert in Detroit in 1978.
- 59:37It's a road trip movie.
- 59:38It's funny.
- 59:40I mean, I feel like if you like Kiss or if you like that gross out comedy during
- 59:45the late '90s, you'll like this film.
- 59:47It's a different pace compared to your American Pies as well as Road Trip,
- 59:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:53Ryan: uh, I would say that on
- 59:56Jon: I ju-
- 59:56Ryan: levels, American Pie, your Road Trip, EuroTrip
- 59:59Jon: I think Detroit Rock City would be a good double
- 1:00:02feature with Dazed and Confused
- 1:00:05Ryan: Yes, like watch Dazed and Confused first as they're leaving for the
- 1:00:09concert, as the four teenagers from
- 1:00:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:13Ryan: City are trying to get tickets
- 1:00:14Jon: Yeah
- 1:00:15Ryan: a concert.
- 1:00:16I-- That's actually a good idea, and then throw in Empire Records,
- 1:00:20like, as, like, the third film later.
- 1:00:22I just saw that recently again, and it's got a warm spot in my heart.
- 1:00:26But we'll go into number four, and number four, she plays Sally.
- 1:00:30It's-- was mentioned earlier during Shay or Nay, and that's Critters.
- 1:00:34covered this.
- 1:00:34It follows a group of small furry aliens with carnivorous behavior escaping from
- 1:00:39two shape-shifting bounty hunters called Ug and Lee, landing in a small countryside
- 1:00:43town to feast on its inhabitants.
- 1:00:46Please, if you haven't seen the movie, watch the movie,
- 1:00:48and then check out our episode.
- 1:00:49We covered the entire Critters franchise, and does it get better?
- 1:00:53Does it get worse?
- 1:00:54You gotta listen to our podcast and watch the movies to
- 1:00:56settle your opinion yourself.
- 1:00:58And then we get to number three, and that's when we get into
- 1:01:02Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
- 1:01:04So yeah, she does make an appearance.
- 1:01:06Wes Craven asked actors from the first film to reappear in this film.
- 1:01:14I-- She was, in the first one, a teacher.
- 1:01:19In this one, she a nurse.
- 1:01:20She was in the hospital scene, and, uh, she's just there for a quick second.
- 1:01:26her presence, again, like as I was saying earlier, underappreciated.
- 1:01:30Her presence is known 'cause you can watch and be like, "Oh crap, Lin
- 1:01:33Shaye's in this." And the movie's great.
- 1:01:36the idea of Freddy coming into the real world and the idea of creating
- 1:01:40another Nightmare on Elm Street after his, death in the the sixth one.
- 1:01:46Right?
- 1:01:47The sixth one?
- 1:01:48Yeah, the sixth one.
- 1:01:49Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.
- 1:01:51I always get five and six confused.
- 1:01:52But again, it's a great film, and it starts the Scream franchise,
- 1:01:57because without New Nightmare, we wouldn't have Scream.
- 1:01:59which leads to number two.
- 1:02:01Again, this movie was mentioned again, earlier.
- 1:02:03She plays a reporter, a propaganda reporter, and that's The Running
- 1:02:08Man, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, Maria
- 1:02:13Alonso, and Jesse "The Body" Ventura.
- 1:02:17It's set in a dystopia United States where a state-controlled broadcaster
- 1:02:20airs a deadly game show in which convicted criminals, known as runners,
- 1:02:24must survive pursuit by themed gladiatorial assassins called stalkers.
- 1:02:28it follows Captain Ben Richards, who's framed, and he's the next contestant.
- 1:02:32And you haven't seen it, watch this one first.
- 1:02:35I still have to watch the remake.
- 1:02:37watch this one.
- 1:02:38It's just a classic.
- 1:02:39And read the book.
- 1:02:41And that leads to number one.
- 1:02:43Lin Shaye plays a teacher in everyone's favorite classic, A Nightmare on Elm
- 1:02:47Street I don't think I have to say much.
- 1:02:50If you haven't seen this film yet, just watch it.
- 1:02:53Enjoy it.
- 1:02:54Love it.
- 1:02:55Then watch the whole franchise, 'cause it's worth it.
- 1:02:57But that's my top five tonight.
- 1:02:59John, what places are we going tonight for your top five?
- 1:03:02Kearns: got a feeling I
- 1:03:03Jon: Well,
- 1:03:07I I w- was inspired by my fallen opinion of Insidious to go and
- 1:03:13find five good PG or PG-13 horror movies to show it can be done well.
- 1:03:26My number five, stars Jeff Daniels, Julian Sands, and John Goodman.
- 1:03:36Number five is Arachnophobia.
- 1:03:39Um,
- 1:03:40Ryan: PG-13?
- 1:03:43I thought that was rated
- 1:03:44Jon: Nope, PG-13.
- 1:03:45A species of killer spiders from South America arrives inside a
- 1:03:50coffin to a small California town.
- 1:03:54The new, the new-to-town Dr. Ross Jennings is puzzled and
- 1:03:58scared since he is arachnophobic.
- 1:04:02Enter the exterminator, Delbert McClintock, to rid the town of the spiders
- 1:04:11Ryan: What's the best dance scene in any movie?
- 1:04:14Kearns: Any movie?
- 1:04:17Ryan: Are we going with American, uh, Wedding with Stefmeister?
- 1:04:23Jon: I didn't even see American Wedding
- 1:04:26Ryan: You're not missing
- 1:04:27Jon: I mean,
- 1:04:28Ryan: are a couple funny scenes, but
- 1:04:29Jon: I mean, I kn- I know right off the bat you just basically dismissed
- 1:04:32Footloose and Dirty Dancing, so
- 1:04:37Ryan: Footloose is good.
- 1:04:38Dirty Dancing is excellent.
- 1:04:40No one puts Baby in the corner
- 1:04:43Jon: I, number four, before we start putting anybody else in corners.
- 1:04:47My number four is Tremors
- 1:04:51Ryan: Oh God, that is
- 1:04:51Jon: It's a PG-13.
- 1:04:53The small town of Perfection, Nevada has a big problem.
- 1:04:58Large underground worm-like creatures are feasting on the townspeople.
- 1:05:04A seismologist and two local men attempt to stop the subterranean
- 1:05:08scourge from snacking on everyone.
- 1:05:11And the cast in this is incredible with Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward,
- 1:05:17Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire.
- 1:05:19And it's- Tremors is like a happy time movie.
- 1:05:24my number three might be the scariest movie I've ever seen.
- 1:05:30And you can argue that maybe it's not fully horror, but it's Fire in the Sky
- 1:05:39Have you seen Fire in the Sky, Ryan?
- 1:05:41You're looking at me blank.
- 1:05:42Ryan: Nah.
- 1:05:43Jon: All right.
- 1:05:44So Fire, Fire in the
- 1:05:46Kearns: saw
- 1:05:46Jon: S-
- 1:05:46Kearns: the sky, bro?
- 1:05:49Ryan: No.
- 1:05:49Kearns: Oh my God, dude.
- 1:05:51That's an, that's an experience.
- 1:05:52You should definitely do that.
- 1:05:53Sorry, John
- 1:05:54Jon: Yeah
- 1:05:55Ryan: is that with the kids?
- 1:05:56Well, you're gonna explain it,
- 1:05:57Jon: turn the lights off and watch Fire in the Sky.
- 1:05:59Fire in the Sky is based on the real life, maybe, experience of Travis Walton.
- 1:06:06Walton was abducted and experimented on by aliens.
- 1:06:10Meanwhile, on Earth, his friends report him as missing and are
- 1:06:14met with ridicule and suspicion.
- 1:06:17Walton manages to escape, and his friends find him naked, bruised,
- 1:06:21and scared at a remote gas station.
- 1:06:25so you get D.B. Sweeney as Walton, and a bunch of other
- 1:06:27cool, like, early '90s actors.
- 1:06:30You get E.T. kid Henry Thomas grown up.
- 1:06:34But Fire in the Sky is legitimately among the scariest movies I've
- 1:06:39ever seen, and it's a rare thing.
- 1:06:43It's alien movies like that that scare me.
- 1:06:45It's that, it's, um, Fourth Kind gets me.
- 1:06:49There's a couple other ones that, have the ability to scare me.
- 1:06:53my number two, we're gonna go up to Scandinavia for an André Øvredal movie,
- 1:06:58who… The guy who directed Autopsy of Jane Doe, and it's Trollhunter So a series
- 1:07:04of mysterious bear killings brings a team of students to determine the cause.
- 1:07:10They stalk a hunter who reluctantly agrees to let them follow and film him,
- 1:07:15hoping he can lead them to the culprit.
- 1:07:18As they go along, they learn Hans is not a conventional hunter.
- 1:07:23Oh, no.
- 1:07:25He hunts trolls.
- 1:07:28I love Trollhunter.
- 1:07:30it's a pretty found footage-y kind of movie.
- 1:07:32It, like, it… Saw it on Netflix at first.
- 1:07:35It really, really hits.
- 1:07:36I love Trollhunter.
- 1:07:39And my number one is a movie we came up- we've talked about already.
- 1:07:45But, number one is Poltergeist.
- 1:07:48so what happens when an, a horror icon collaborates with a cinema legend?
- 1:07:53Poltergeist happens.
- 1:07:55Produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Tobe Hooper.
- 1:07:59now listen, here's, what I'm talking about.
- 1:08:02Otherworldly beings manifest in a family's new home, shattering their peaceful lives.
- 1:08:08Insidious.
- 1:08:09It gets worse when their young daughter or son is pulled into
- 1:08:14the TV and the other side.
- 1:08:16Or the further.
- 1:08:17A team of experts, Elise, Specs, and Tucker, comes to help rescue
- 1:08:22the girl from a nightmarish realm-
- 1:08:26Sound familiar?
- 1:08:28Yeah, it does, doesn't it?
- 1:08:31Ryan: Oh,
- 1:08:31Jon: Number one, Poltergeist.
- 1:08:33Ryan: You-
- 1:08:34Jon: And, like, that's scratching the surface.
- 1:08:36You, you… I wanna do 'em one after another and just list
- 1:08:42Ryan: I
- 1:08:43Jon: the commonalities
- 1:08:44Ryan: I'm like
- 1:08:48We're gonna have to move Poltergeist up and do
- 1:08:49a co- comparison on this
- 1:08:51Jon: Might.
- 1:08:52Kearns: I mean, it's
- 1:08:53Jon: We might.
- 1:08:54Kearns: though.
- 1:08:55Jon: No
- 1:08:55Kearns: Guys, I mean, you can just,
- 1:08:56Ryan: is
- 1:08:57Kearns: just compare the beats.
- 1:08:59Sorry.
- 1:09:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:01Kearns: All right, guys.
- 1:09:01That was Insidious.
- 1:09:02I hope you didn't like it because we sure didn't
- 1:09:05Ryan: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:09:06Jon: Ryan likes it
- 1:09:07Ryan: film.
- 1:09:09Watch it, enjoy it.
- 1:09:11Watch it on New Year's,
- 1:09:12Kearns: Nothing like spot on average to really get you going
- 1:09:16Ryan: It's the starting point.
- 1:09:18It's like starting the
- 1:09:18Kearns: That's the whole point
- 1:09:19Ryan: it sputter a little bit.
- 1:09:21Kearns: have been the starting point
- 1:09:24Jon: It should have been the starting and ending point
- 1:09:27Kearns: Yes.
- 1:09:28Ryan: Yeah, okay.
- 1:09:30Kearns: that's us for this week, everybody.
- 1:09:32We hope you enjoyed, and we'll catch you on the next one
- 1:09:36Ryan: Don't get haunted and have a good one
- 1:09:39Jon: Yeah
