- 0:12Hey, listeners. This is Nick from scripture
- 0:14Central and today's podcast addresses.
- 0:16The question, why did Jesus use Passover imagery in his bread of
- 0:21life sermon? According to the Gospel of John,
- 0:27Jesus offered a powerful sermon as the Passover, a feast of the
- 0:31Jews was nigh. This discourse, often called the
- 0:35bread of life, sermon relates to the Passover in several profound
- 0:38ways as summarized by Eric D, Huntsman the Passover setting
- 0:44establishes, some of the fundamental symbolism necessary
- 0:47for understanding the bread of life discourse, including
- 0:51Deliverance, the crossing of the sea.
- 0:54Miraculous feedings in the wilderness and the saving role
- 0:57of the Paschal Lamb. These Passover Illusions arise,
- 1:01well, before Jesus even began his famous sermon.
- 1:04For instance, in John chapter 6, verse 3, we learn that Jesus
- 1:08went up into a mountain and there he sat with his disciples
- 1:12other gospel accounts place this mountain in a desert place this
- 1:15Mountain Wilderness context, Echoes the Wilderness through
- 1:18which the children of Israel wandered after the very first
- 1:21Passover, as well, as Mount Sinai.
- 1:24Where they received the law of Moses.
- 1:26In this setting, Jesus fed his disciples as well as about 5,000
- 1:30people who had followed him which he accomplished by
- 1:33multiplying. A few small Loaves and Fishes.
- 1:36This famous Miracle notes, Hudson.
- 1:38Not only recreates, the table Fellowship of the Passover meal,
- 1:43but also harks back to Jehovah's provision of mana and flesh.
- 1:46To the Israelites, in the wilderness, having witnessed
- 1:50this miracle, many present, clearly recognized.
- 1:54Jesus as a new Moses stating that this is of a truth that
- 1:58Prophet that should come into the world.
- 2:00Who would be like unto Moses? After these events, Jesus
- 2:05miraculously crossed the Sea by literally walking upon it akin
- 2:09to the Israelites traversing through the Red Sea on dry
- 2:12ground while many viewed the coming Messiah as a prophetic
- 2:16King, Jesus has direct control over the elements showed that he
- 2:20possessed power typically attributed to Jehovah in the Old
- 2:23Testament, Jesus is identity. As Jehovah was further
- 2:27solidified, when he approached his disciples in the boat saying
- 2:30it is, I Be not Afraid the Jesus statement uses the Greek
- 2:35formula, I am thus offering a possible rendering of, I am Be
- 2:41not Afraid. This same formula was used by
- 2:44Jehovah to Moses, when he declared I am that I am.
- 2:48And this formula is found elsewhere throughout John's
- 2:51gospel in ways, clearly, identifying Jesus as the god of
- 2:54the Old Testament. Finally, as Jesus delivered, a
- 2:58sermon to the multitude and Capernaum the following day, he
- 3:01stated, I am the bread of life. He, that cometh to me shall
- 3:05never hunger and he, that believeth on me shall never
- 3:08thirst when asked how they might receive this bread?
- 3:12Jesus offered, what was for many a shocking instruction except ye
- 3:17eat the Flesh of the son of man and drink his blood.
- 3:21You have no life in you and whoso eateth my flesh and
- 3:24drinketh my blood hath eternal Erna life and I will raise him
- 3:28up at the last day, many in the crowd, misunderstood or doubted,
- 3:33the truthfulness of Jesus statement.
- 3:35Just as many today, might be puzzled by it yet as Huntsman
- 3:39concluded, the exit is imagery of the discourses Passover
- 3:42setting provides unimportant, although often overlooked image
- 3:47that connects this flesh-and-blood symbolism
- 3:50directly to the original discourse.
- 3:52That Jesus delivered, namely the Paschal Lamb which was
- 3:55sacrificed So that it's blood would ward off death and whose
- 3:59flesh was eaten. In a festive meal for modern
- 4:02Christians including Latter-Day Saints are taking of the bread
- 4:05of life and therefore the Paschal Lamb of God is most
- 4:08recognizable through the ordinance of the sacrament while
- 4:12the sacrament is often understood to be commemorative
- 4:14of Jesus atonement unspent proposes that it may also have a
- 4:18broader meaning not only looking backwards in time but forwards.
- 4:22Also the very fact that the sacrament is to be celebrated It
- 4:26specifically until he comes again suggests that it can also
- 4:31in a sense, be proleptic. Anticipating his glorious return
- 4:35and foreshadowing, the great end time.
- 4:37Messianic Feast. When viewed in light of these
- 4:41additional doctrinal relationships, the sacrament can
- 4:44take on new and profound layers of meaning as see Wilfred Griggs
- 4:49observed, the sacrament of the Lord's Supper cannot be received
- 4:53without an awesome reverence or buy it.
- 4:56He is in. And we become one with him.
- 5:00Thus he prayed with those who supped with him prior to
- 5:02Gethsemane and the cross Elder, Bruce are McConkey taught that
- 5:06for the Latter Day, Saints, and all Christians today to eat the
- 5:10Flesh and drink, the blood of the Son of God is first to
- 5:14accept him in the most literal and full sense with no
- 5:18reservation whatsoever, as the personal Offspring, In the Flesh
- 5:22of the Eternal Father working, the works of God, Elder
- 5:25McConkey. I continued means keeping the
- 5:28Commandments of the Sun by accepting his gospel joining,
- 5:33his church, and enduring an obedience, and righteousness
- 5:36unto the end. Sadly many, who heard this
- 5:39teaching directly from Jesus, himself were unwilling to accept
- 5:43that, he was the bread of life who had come from God.
- 5:47While Christ is not directly ministering to mankind today,
- 5:50the opportunity for a deep interpersonal communion with him
- 5:54and the father is made possible. Each week through the ordinance
- 5:58of the sacrament as we worthily participate.
- 6:01In this sacred ordinance, we promise to take upon ourselves,
- 6:05the name of Jesus Christ. To always remember him,
- 6:09including his body and blood, which was given for us and
- 6:12always keep his Commandments as both a commemorative and
- 6:17proleptic act on spinrite, the celebration of the sacrament and
- 6:21Latter-Day Saint theology. Therefore, not only looks back
- 6:24to his atoning death but also looks Forward to the
- 6:27resurrection, emphasizing the possibility of current and
- 6:30future communion with him, by staying true, to the covenants,
- 6:34we make with the Lord, we can have this hope looking forward
- 6:38to the great Messianic Feast when Jesus returns to the Earth,
- 6:42as well as dwelling with the father and son.
- 6:44In the eternity', as Jesus Promised whoso eateth My Flesh
- 6:49and drinketh my blood hath, eternal life and I will raise
- 6:53him up at the last day. Thank you for listening to this
