- 3:46mysterious adventure with Nick Carter. As our story opens, we find Nick and
- 3:51Patsy just entering the hotel room of John Ames, a young friend of Nick's.
- 3:54Hello Nick, Patsy, Hellojohn, glad to see you come on here.
- 3:59Thanks again. Oh Nick, look at that darling Scottie on the bed.
- 4:01Hey, man, get down off that bed. I look so cute
- 4:04with his head on the pillow. I've never been able to break McTavish for
- 4:08the habit. Oh. By the way, this is Chief Danis, the
- 4:11local police. Nick Carter and Patsy Bowen. Chief. Well, let's get
- 4:15down to business. Chief Danis and I have just come from my Aunt Mary's
- 4:18funeral. As you know, the corner's verdict was that Maunt Murray killed herself
- 4:23with aconyde but I don't believe it. Why not John? First because she
- 4:27wasn't suicide kind. Second because if she wanted to kill herself she would have
- 4:30used poisoned. She was more familiar with She was a gardener, knew all
- 4:34about nicotine, sulfate and nurse make and so on. Nothing very positive there.
- 4:39Well, mister Carter, how about this? Since John's grandfather, Old
- 4:42Henry Ames, passed on at the age of eighty three, four years ago,
- 4:46three of the years have died. Typhoid killed Prying last year, Phil
- 4:50was shot in a hunting accident two years ago, and now Mary dies of
- 4:55aconhyde poison. But the Purcells keep right on running the farm the way they
- 4:58always have. Adam and Paul Purcell were first employed as fine managers by my
- 5:02grandfather. Each successive owner since Dan's kept them on. So far everything seems
- 5:08quite open and above board. Yes, But each time one of the last
- 5:11three Aims has died, the word murder has been whispered all over town.
- 5:15But why I don't get not just a feeling, no proof at all.
- 5:17But the rumor persists that the pur Sales know more about than they can let
- 5:23on. And as a medical student, I can say that the chances of
- 5:26three healthy people dying off like that, one after another purely as a coincidence
- 5:29is less than one in a hundred. There's the any question about your grandfather's
- 5:32death being natural? No, not at all. Now about Phil he shot
- 5:38himself in a chest while out hunting with a purcell and it was his gun
- 5:42with only his fingerprints on it. I see. How about Prank's death,
- 5:46died in bed of not typhoid, nothing to show it wasn't on the level.
- 5:49Not a thing, mister Carter. I'll not tell me about your Aunt
- 5:54Mary's death. Anything wrong, There nothing you can put your finger on.
- 6:00Hear the facts, and I want to say that they've been checked and proven
- 6:02in every detail I tried, mister Carter. What John will tell you is
- 6:05nothing but facts. All right, let's have him. Aunt Mary lived alone
- 6:09in the Big house. The Pursells and Lizzie Gregg, their haired girl,
- 6:13lived in the tenant house. Lizzie took care of the big house and got
- 6:15the meals for Aunt Mary, but she didn't sleep there well. This particular
- 6:19morning, Lizzie walked over to the big house at seven in the morning,
- 6:23called my aunt, got no answer, and investigated. My aunt was in
- 6:27bed dead, and it snowed that night before all night, and the tracks
- 6:31we found when we got there proved proved, mind you, that no one
- 6:35was in the house that night with his aunt, and the poste Martin shows
- 6:40she died of vaconite poisoning. Yeah, some minute dose, but fatal and
- 6:44positive, just enough to kill her where she gets to Zaconay and Lizzie used
- 6:46it for a hard condition for years, kept the bottle in the big house
- 6:50in the kitchen cabinet. Bottle was found on his aunt's bedside table, with
- 6:55her fingerprints plainly showing on top of Lizzie's. But it couldn't be an accident
- 6:59because Zach and I it is neither older, listen nor tasteless, and couldn't
- 7:01be taken without knowing it. And the poison was administered to my aunt through
- 7:04her mouth. It certainly looks like suicide to me, except for one thing,
- 7:09Patsy, with a person going to commit suicide would pour themselves out a
- 7:13good sizeable portion of the poison they intended to use, not just barely enough
- 7:16to kill them. She wouldn't know enough to do that if she didn't leave
- 7:19any suicide note either, But if it wasn't suicide. And if she couldn't
- 7:24have taken it by accident, and if nobody could have forced it on her
- 7:26without her knowing it was being done, where does that leave you? Exactly,
- 7:30Patsy? It proves just one thing in my mind. It proves a
- 7:32cold blooded, deliberate murder, carefully planned and executed it. I don't know
- 7:36how it was done, but it was the same goes for phil'sdaf and Franks.
- 7:42And I'll bet the purse cells of the murderers are the accomplices. They
- 7:45stand to gain a nice income from the farm, which goes to them with
- 7:47the last air diyes've been planning this for years. They planned it so carefully
- 7:51that the evidence proves them not guilty every time. Let him perself, Where
- 7:57did you come from? I not, but there was so much talk and
- 8:00nobody heard me. So I come in, John, I heard what you
- 8:05said. Well, I met at every word. How do you happen to
- 8:09be here? Purcell? I heard John was coming down here to meet Chief
- 8:11Dennis and you, mister Carter, I guess why? So I followed him
- 8:16to spy on me. No young man not despy to resign Paul and Lazier
- 8:22against the idea I'm the elder brother, and what I say goes. You
- 8:26mean you'll all move off the farm, just that, and writing now,
- 8:28Bester Purcell, and then every word I said, just now, And I'm
- 8:31not taking back a word of it if you can't resign, and I can't
- 8:33let you go, because if they go now, it means either they're quitting
- 8:37under fire or I'm afraid to live in the farm with him. Guide.
- 8:41I need fire managers, and the Purcell's the best managers. I know.
- 8:43I think you're right, John. Well, how do you feel about it,
- 8:46mister Purcell? I don't know, but I well, I guess I
- 8:52can stand it if he can. All right, we'll put the food on
- 8:58your table, clean your house, run your farm. But that's all.
- 9:03They won't have nothing to do with you, nor you with us. I
- 9:05understand, and I agree. I'll be getting along. Quiet Mac, and
- 9:11get down off my bed. Come on, come on, get out.
- 9:13You're going back to the farm tonight. The dream, Yes, especially in
- 9:16view of what just happened, you still think for Sale's guilty, Yes,
- 9:20I do. Adam wanted to resign, either because he was afraid or because
- 9:24he wanted to establish an alibi, because if I should be killed while the
- 9:28Purcel's weren't living on the farm, they'd be cleared of all of that.
- 9:31Hannah going back there and proved that the Purcells actually did what I think they
- 9:35did. Well, Mac, this seems to be the kitchen. There's nobody
- 9:50here, Yes, there isn't that rocking here? How do you do you
- 9:56let your dog in the house? Yes? Max always lived with me in
- 10:03my room. Where do you sleep in the master bedroom? Of course?
- 10:07Good, best room in the house. What time you want breakfast? About
- 10:11eight o'clock. I'd like eggs, bacon and coffee. U s at the
- 10:16time, young man, I'll finish the meals. Good night. Well,
- 10:24yes, Max, that was probably Lizzie. That's the way they wanted.
- 10:28Okay, come on, let's have a look at our house. So this
- 10:41is the master bedroom. Gosh, Mac, so beautiful. Hey, get
- 10:48down off that bed. Mac. You've got to turn over a new leaf
- 10:50in this house. Lizzie won't have you sleeping on beds. I know.
- 10:56Oh, all right, stay there for now. The whole house smells so
- 11:01strongly of alcohol, smells like a box boom's here in the bedroom. Swell
- 11:07well, hello, Tom, I thought i'd call and see how you're making
- 11:11out. Gosh, Nick, it's good to hear your voice. This is
- 11:15a grand old house, but it's so quiet you can cut it with a
- 11:18knife. Any new ideas yet, yes, one or two? Nick,
- 11:22I'd like to have you get me a permit to exume Frank Ames's body and
- 11:24autopsy the remain. If our cynical poisoning was wrongly diagnosed as typhoid, it
- 11:30can still be checked. All right, John, I'll bring the permit ut
- 11:33of me when I come tomorrow. Oh by the way, if the Bushsells
- 11:35were to inherit the farm, where would Lizzie come in? She wouldn't.
- 11:39There's no interest in it it all. You wouldn't get touch a dollar of
- 11:43it. Why I understand Lizzie and Paul we're talking of getting married about five
- 11:48years ago, but nothing came of it. I see ah, John,
- 11:54I'll see you about eleven in the morning. And I Nick, come on,
- 11:58Mac, you have to it off the bed now because I'm getting in
- 12:01it myself. Lizzie, that was the best breakfast I ever ate. And
- 12:13I mean it, yes, never you do, I know. And I'm
- 12:16being made fun of and Lizzie I wonder if you could manage to get rid
- 12:20of that barrel of alcohol I saw on the cellar this morning. I can
- 12:24smell it all over the house. Let us speak to Paul, young man.
- 12:28I've been trying to get rid of that barrel all the winter. It
- 12:30leaves, Yes, it certainly does. You'll have to get Paul to get
- 12:33rid of it. And he's real subven he's Where is Paul now? Plow?
- 12:37And of course where else this time of year? Thanks Lidi, see
- 12:39if I can find him. Paul, come over here a minute, please,
- 13:00What do you want? I'm papa busy young man. I want to
- 13:03see where Phil was killed. Oh, right over there it was. We
- 13:07was after grouse. I climbed through the wire here and he went over the
- 13:11fence there. He kept his gun to ahead of him. Start hit that
- 13:15rock and bang got him in the chair. Mmm. See, thanks,
- 13:18you might if I get back to the plan we're behind now, No,
- 13:22not at all. And Adam certainly keep this place in beautiful shape. We
- 13:26aimed all run down when Adam and me was hired, But now everything's up
- 13:30to snuff and no aims ever put his hand to it yet. I think
- 13:33I'll roam around, see what there is to see. Haven't been here since
- 13:37I was a kid. Come on, Max, Hey, Max, look
- 13:52at the time. But the clark must be nick blowing for us. Come
- 13:56on, we'll go back to the catalane. Ought to be the quickest way
- 13:58to house. Yes, this cataline's a beautiful job, almost two hundred yards
- 14:05straight from the barn. Out of the fields of the cows are put out,
- 14:07the pasture fenced on both sides with five stands of barbed wire, one
- 14:13of them as tight as a banjo string. That Mac is a model fence
- 14:16if I ever saw, Yes Mac, I see him. It's neck all
- 14:20right. Oh, he's got pasty with him. I'm on the top if
- 14:28I can jump that high. So the series of accidents is continuing John's first
- 14:46day on the farm, and already death runs to meet him. Can this
- 14:48murderer set up be solved in time to save John from being killed? We'll
- 14:52see in just a moment. When your youngster's tracking mud, slice or snow
- 14:58just after you've cleaned the floor, you know it exasperating. But when your
- 15:01floors are protected by linux clear glass vanish crystal, those winter time puddles are
- 15:05whisk away in a hurry. That's because Linux Clear Gloss keeps dirt and water

- 15:48dealers now, Linux l N dash X, Linux Clear Glass Vanish You will
- 15:56find all three great linax home brightness and keen tone, the miracle wall finish
- 16:00a hardware painting department stores everywhere. And now back to our story. As
- 16:14we left John, he was in a narrow lane hem's in on both sides
- 16:17with high barbed wire, trying to escape a mad rush of a bull charging
- 16:19down on him from the pond. It is now a few minutes later.
- 16:22We'll get to John. No, I'm all right. I never saw such
- 16:26a pretty ball thing. Is Hue hit over the top of that fan.
- 16:30I can't understand it. The fool couldn't break out of his pen. Somebody
- 16:34must have left the gate to the pen on latch. It doesn't matter now,
- 16:37no damage was done. I go to that bool get away someday,
- 16:41go to the pad, not the pen that No, you men know it
- 16:45all. What are you doing here, Lizzie. Get back to the house
- 16:48where you belong and down here to tell the young man he's got company.
- 16:52He found out for hisself. Yes, I found him. Well, John
- 16:56sall we go somewhere and talk. Nobody will bother us here, Nick good.
- 17:12At first, John, I got the permit to exhume your uncle's body.
- 17:17I brought the undertaker alonger dig it up and take it back to town.
- 17:19Second, I got hold of your uncle phil shotgun, the one that
- 17:22killed him. I examined it pretty closely. Find anything interesting I did.
- 17:29I found evidence. It seems to bear out your feeling that his death may
- 17:32not have been the accident they claim it was. This has reeks of alcohol,
- 17:36doesn't Yes, it's a barrel of the stuff in the cellar. For
- 17:38some reason, it smells up the whole place. Come in, young man,
- 17:45you'll leave this ban tonight. Otherwise you're going to get yourself killed,
- 17:49killed by whom. Maybe I don't know, and maybe I do. I
- 17:53seen the hand in the arm that pushed the bolt on the bullpen gate open.
- 17:57That ball was loosed deliberate. If you know who did it, you
- 18:00want to speak up prevent further tragedy. I only recognize the sleeve of the
- 18:04shirt, just total might they could have got their shirts mixed up, so
- 18:08I ain't saying now you hate what I tell you, young man, Get
- 18:12out and get quick. She could have been more positive and her identification.
- 18:21I wonder how positive she really is. Maybe she doesn't know herself. Maybe
- 18:26I'm beginning to get an idea. I mean, you can see an end
- 18:30of this riddle. No, but I think I begin to see where we're
- 18:33headed, and it's not pretty well. I've got work to do right now.
- 18:37See you tonight, John, and in the meantime, be careful.
- 18:56Hello, Nick, I know I'm going to see you tonight, But since
- 18:59you've been gone, some thing's happened. I think you ought to know what
- 19:02that job. Both Adam and Paul have come to me secretly at different times,
- 19:06and each one has told me that he saw his brother unlatch the gate
- 19:08to the bull's pen. You mean they each if he the other? Yes?
- 19:12Nick? Well, very interesting. Oh by the way, John,
- 19:18and if i's you and your uncle Frank's body shows our centical poison and fatal
- 19:22quantities. Oh question? But what it was murdered? But who did it?
- 19:25Nick? He did it? I suppose you get all three of the
- 19:27first sails in the big house at ten in the morning. I'll need it
- 19:30to len and clean up the details. Tell them I've found out something conclusive.
- 19:34Don't tell them what they make one of them come through with a confession.
- 19:38Maybe all right, Nick, ten in the morning. Five jobs and
- 19:41watch yourself tonight, Operator Merchancy. I'm poisoned. Get me a doctor quick,
- 20:03and then get Nick Carter at the hotel. Get a doctor. Then
- 20:07called Nick Jeeves as if you and Nick got here off a fastt When Nick's
- 20:19in a hurry, he doesn't waste any time getting prison. You know what
- 20:22you were poisoned with, John, Yes, it was Zach and I all
- 20:25right, I know that I can't figure out how I got it is very
- 20:29low. We've got to make it pick up. Do you know how course
- 20:32she does that. She's practically a fullfledge nurse. It's lucky it's nobody here
- 20:36on the farm. I can trust YEA drink this, John, It'll stimulate
- 20:38your heart, and you better walk up and down. I just heard you
- 20:42on the extension phone that John was poisoned. Is that true? It's true?
- 20:45All right. You only know what you heard on the phone for sure.
- 20:49What else? How is he? We don't know yet. Oh.
- 20:52I'd rather taking the poison in moans stomach than he should get it. I
- 20:56never dreamed of any killing, or note any was being Nick. Will you
- 21:00get me? He Paul too? Paul poisoned Paul die if you could let
- 21:11me have some of that stuff you're using for John, ma'am, I'll go
- 21:14ten to Paul. Well, of course here you come in. Lit almost
- 21:18have poisoned you in himself. John. That's the only answer, and that
- 21:22means Paul did all those other things too. I took nothing since dinner.
- 21:26It was much too long ago to wait it all this time to take a
- 21:29thing. It is impossible eat nothing and drunk nothing since seven o'clock. It's
- 21:33two forty in the morning, and could it that's the doctor Patry rushing to
- 21:37Paul. Okay, paulmost talk before he dies. He's got to clear this
- 21:41thing up. John. Did you say you had had nothing to eat or
- 21:45drink for the last seven or eight hours? That's right, Nick. The
- 21:48same as Aunt Mary's case, exactly. She was poisoned without knowing how it
- 21:52was done. So is I the answer to one is the answer to both.
- 21:56Paul's killing himself looks as if he were that answer. I can't figure
- 22:00out how he could have done it. John, I'd like to have a
- 22:04look at your room. Feeling strong enough? Yeah, sure, Nick,
- 22:08let's do it now. Nick, do you think Mac get off that bed?
- 22:26Hey, mag come on by. That's funny Usually Nick, Stead don't
- 22:34touch him. Why not? Look? John, His head's on a pillow
- 22:40in the same place yours would be if you were in bed. Yesick,
- 22:44So what you slept on that pillow and almost died? Max sleeps there and
- 22:48does die? Doesn't that mean anything to you? I'm afraid not. What
- 22:52should it mean? Aconnight was poured on the pillow case before you went to
- 22:56bed? What remember? Ack? And I had are so powerful look and
- 22:59be absorbed through the skin, particular the thin, damp, mucous membrane of
- 23:03the lips. That's right, Nick, A person sleeping on that pillow with
- 23:06aconites pilled on it and poison himself in a couple of hours because you were
- 23:08restless. You got up before the dose was fatal. But Mac withther's very
- 23:11bad habit of sleeping on your pillow and sleeping very soundly, slept there once
- 23:15too often. But Nick, why didn't I smell it? What does aconite
- 23:19smell like with alcohol? Right? Of course the house reeks of alcohol.
- 23:26Naturally, I'd never smell it. That alcohol smell is part of the plot,
- 23:29John oh, Nick, who let's get everybody together and talk it over.
- 23:34Maybe that way we'll get along faster. So up to now, we've
- 23:48got this much settled. I found that the safety catch and the shotgun that
- 23:52killed Phil two years ago had been tampered with. So it is no good.
- 23:55Lizzie swears you saw Paul fooling around the gun just before the accident.
- 23:59And our top say proved that Frank was killed by a mixture of ours and
- 24:02Nick and boron which Lizzie and Adam both say Paul was trying out as a
- 24:06new spray for bean beetles. The bull was let out of his pen on
- 24:08purpose, unquestionably to kill John Eames. Lizzie says she recognized the torn sleeve
- 24:15of Paul's shirt on the arms she saw slip the latch. Adam agreed with
- 24:18that. Unfortunately, Paul died without saying anything, so we don't know his
- 24:22side of the story, but we do know he told John that Adam did
- 24:26it. I don't need to hear no more, mister Carter. I'm packing
- 24:32up and gettin out of here now to night. I'll help you pack,
- 24:34Adam. I know where your things are. I ain't leaving you. You
- 24:38ain't a persel. Lizzie. Tain't try to ask you to share my troubles,
- 24:42but I want to, Adam. I've always looked after you. Do
- 24:45you think I'm gonna stop now? Lizzie, you're real kind, but I
- 24:48can't allow it. I can take care of myself, Adam. If I
- 24:53were you, I wouldn't refuse Lizzie like that. Huh. He's in love
- 24:57with you. She ain't neither. Lizzy's an old maid. That's where you're
- 25:02wrong. That's where everybody went wrong. Lizzie is in love with you.
- 25:06That's how all this came to happen. Nick, You aren't making any sense
- 25:08now, Yes, I am, Patsy. Lizzie hated Paul for not marrying
- 25:12her that time they re engaged. Now she's going to love Adam, and
- 25:15she wanted him to have the farm because she thought that was what he wanted
- 25:18more than anything else in the world. So she tried to kill off the
- 25:22airs one after another and throw the blame on Paul. Put the safety catch
- 25:26on Phil's gone, the poison that killed Frank, Oh John, Any farm
- 25:30woman knows enough to do those things. And she killed your aunt Mary the
- 25:33same way she tried to kill you. No trace of aconite is found on
- 25:36your aunt's pillow because Lizzie changed the pillow case before calling for help. You'd
- 25:40have changed yours too if things had gone right, But she didn't have time.
- 25:44And every once in a while she spilled a little alcohol out of the
- 25:45barrel in the cellar to keep the house smelling of it. But that's not
- 25:48proof, meck no, it isn't. But I'm willing to bet that if
- 25:52you look, you'll find she just changed Paul's pillowcase, and I don't doubt
- 25:57you'll find that pillowcase still smelling of aac night somewhere in the house where the
- 26:00purseales live, and that will be proof. You don't need to look pause.
- 26:06I've done it, all of it, just like you say it was
- 26:08easy. You're also dumb, just like old men. Never thought a woman
- 26:14could do anything for you but cook and so letting the bull out of his
- 26:18pen. You couldn't have done that, oh couldn't. I look at my
- 26:21hands, He looked just like a man. I put one of Paul's shirts
- 26:25under my skirt when I went out to the bar and slipped it over my
- 26:27arm when I opened the boat. Nobody knowed it was me. Even them
- 26:30as saw me do it didn't know. How did you know it? It
- 26:34had to be that way. There was no other answer that would fit all
- 26:37the facts. As I gathered the men. The exact method used and the
- 26:41motive behind it were the things I had to find out before I could act.
- 26:45Lizzie almost beat me to it this last time. I didn't think she
- 26:48was ready to act so quickly. Gosh, Mick, I hate to think
- 26:52of having to turn her over to the police. I've been here, I've
- 26:55grown fond of Lizzie. They won't have to feel sorry for me, young
- 26:57man, I do say, instead of talking about him and YO with John,
- 27:03I took the rest of the apt night in the bottle. Just leave
- 27:06me be. I'll die without now. Help for many of you. In

- 28:51Well, Nick, what new an exciting adventure do you plan to tell
- 28:52us about next week? A scientist and inventor whose home was on the coast
- 28:56was found in his laboratory one morning with a book. All it was for
- 29:00it, much to my regret, because we were supposed to be vacationing up
- 29:03there, not capturing murderers. Well, I suppose murderers have to be captured
- 29:07no matter what happens, Yes, Ken, And this time I was intrigued
- 29:11by the killing because the only clue that had any value was a piece of
- 29:15rope, a kind of rope that none of us had ever seen before.
- 29:18And there was a thundershower at midnight too, which helped to put the finger
- 29:21on the killer. Sounds interesting, Yes, I'll listen. What's the title
- 29:23of your story? I call it Crime at Cold Harbor or the Mystery of
- 29:29the Murdered Scientists. And that's all for now. Details next week. So
- 29:33long, So long everybody, and so long to both of you. We'll
- 29:37be expecting to hear from you again next week as usual. Next week,
- 29:52at the same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter Master Detective
- 29:56entitled Crime the Cold Harber or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Murdered Scientists.
- 30:11Nick Carter Master Detective is featured in Street and Smith magazines. Lon Clark
- 30:17is starred as Nick, with Helen Chaunt as Patsy. Original music is played
- 30:21by Lou White, and the programs are written and directed by Jack McGregor.
- 30:26Nick Carter Master Detective is presented at this time and over these same stations each
- 30:30week by the three great Linax Home Bright News, Linux Clear Gloss Varnish,
- 30:34Linux Cream Polish and Linax Self Polishing Wax, created by Acme America's great producer
- 30:41of Acme Fine Quality paints. This is Ken Powell speaking for the thousands of
- 30:47Linux dealers all over America and saying so long until next week. This is
- 30:52mutual welcome back. Patsy's comment in the Gezer was kind of a bit cold.
- 31:15It was very unfortunate that scientist was murdered. It ruined my vacation plans.
- 31:21But I guess that's what happens when uh, you go around working for
- 31:25Nick Carter all the time, it becomes a little less shocking to you're just
- 31:29like trapped. That just messed up my vacation plans. All right, that
- 31:33will actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow as we wrap
- 31:37up the Primrose matter and also bring you another episode of Manhunt in the meantime.
