- 1:45SPEAKER_03: I'm doing all right.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: How about you?
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: I'm doing great.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: We have an exciting show today.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: We're talking about annual reviews.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: I'm going to throw it right at you.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Why are annual reviews important?
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, that all depends.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: How often are you talking to your advisor?
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Uh there's go ahead.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say it should be more than once a year.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Um, especially if you're in a planning relationship, right?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: There are definitely big enough things happening on a regular basis where even if you're just calling a check-in or scheduling a time to check in maybe twice a year, get that mid-year check-in just to make sure everything's going all right, and then have a bigger meeting at some point in the year.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: My my best bet would be to distribute those between, hey, sometime Q1 and then another time, maybe in Q3, be start of Q4.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Because then you you hit the you hit the tax opportunities, right?
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: You get the end of your end-ish of your tax idea in terms of capital gains and whatnot.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: Great, great time for an advisor to get with a client, the client to get with the advisor, and really I think the importance goes both ways.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: It it allows the advisor to get updated on their situation, it allows you know the client to provide those updates to make sure that their plan is on track.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Um so very important that you know everyone should be meeting with their advisor a couple times a year uh for these conversations.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Before we go into you know, aspects of a good financial review, a good annual performance slash financial planning review, what are some of the things that you know make a financial review not as effective?
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, how do we start?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I think it goes back to uh I'm gonna skip a couple P's.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Proper planning prevents poor performance, right?
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: So if you're if you're gearing up to meet with your advisor, try to have and I mean I'm gonna paint kind of an illustration of like the dream scenario here for an advisor.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: The dream is hey, we we send out an email saying it's time for us to do our annual review.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: We get an email back, they say, Great, looking forward to it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: And they say, Here are some topics that I'd like to discuss.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Here are some specific questions that I have.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Can you be prepared to answer these?
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: And we go, Yes.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: How does Tuesday work?
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: And then we get the statements, and the client sends over the statements, and we have more than an hour or two to review said statements.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: And then that that meeting comes and they're like friends coming in, we answer all the questions, we review some investments, we talk about their plan, talk about some opportunities going forward, and everything's all good.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: But all of that falls short when we go, hey, can we see that 401k statement?
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: And then 30 minutes before the meeting, we finally get that 401k statement.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, some things you don't want to be uncovering during the meeting.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Uh ideally, you'd like to have all of that up front, uh, which can make the conversation more effective for clients, for the advisor.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: In our industry, it's it's quite commonplace for a lot of advisors to more focus on performance rather than the planning aspects, which we're gonna talk about uh in just a few minutes.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: So number one, you know, for me, focusing too much on performance can kind of make the the meeting more backward looking and less effective.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: Um not revisiting goals um and whether those goals have changed.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: So if we're you know working with a client who had stated goals many years ago, but we haven't revisited what exactly those goals are and whether anything has changed, that can stifle productivity a little bit.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: And uh when an advisor really talks too much.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Wait, should we should we update our goals if our original goal was to start a family and now we have four kids?
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, so all of that can really detract from a positive productive meeting with your advisor.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: Or a positive productive meeting between the advisor and the client.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: But let's let's pivot.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Let's talk more about what goes into a great annual review.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Where do you want to start there?
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Let's start with pre-meeting, right?
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: So we send out an email or one of our client service team sends out an email saying it's time to schedule your um annual review, and we hear nothing back.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Well, there's not gonna be an annual review.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: So some sort of response that way.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: And then if we say, Hey, are there any questions that I can be prepared to answer for you, you say no.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Or you don't say anything at all, again with the responsiveness, we're not gonna have anything prepared for.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: We're gonna assume it's gonna be a pretty rote meeting, which I mean is boring for the client, is boring for the advisor.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Nobody leaves that happy.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: So having some questions, and there are stupid questions.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say there aren't any stupid questions, but they're definitely few and far between.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it would be ideal to have all of that up front.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, having a thoughtfully prepared agenda can help uncover some of that stuff.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: And that agenda can focus on some key items to make sure that we cover it during the meeting.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: For one, I think a big place to start is hey, are there any changes in your life, any big changes?
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Are you married, getting married, divorced, children, inheritances, uh, any major expenses coming up?
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I think that's a good place to start.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not being afraid to show excitement or sadness about a topic.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: You wouldn't believe the number of conversations I've had where I've had to pull it out of somebody that they're engaged.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Kind of a big deal.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: A lot of changes happen financially and a lot of changes happen in just your real life when you get engaged.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: But for some reason people will go, oh yeah, you know, I just did uh I'm engaged now and we're getting married in June.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: And and it's like that's a that's a big deal, and it's gonna affect recommendations.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: And uh, hey, maybe we can send you a card or something.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: It's gonna affect your expenses too.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: So but no, uh that conversation too can really bring about what changes in your time horizon might be um coming up.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Uh maybe you want to extend retirement a little bit.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: And part of this conversation is is talking about your big picture income, but hey, how do we match your retirement with Social Security plus some other income that you're gonna be having?
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: That's a little further in the conversation, but you know, knowing what's changed in the big picture can affect what uh risks you might be susceptible to.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: So that's that's gonna be part of the conversation brought into the picture.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: A big one for me too is you know progress towards goals.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Um maybe that's not something you cover at the beginning.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: Maybe you know, every advisor has their own strategy for the for the annual review, but um I think ultimately a client wants to walk away feeling pretty confident about what they're doing.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: So showing them that they've made some progress since uh a year or two ago, or five years ago, or ten years ago since they started can really bring some confidence to them.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: Um but what else is on your list of things to cover with a client?
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: I think those things set the initial, right?
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Then we move through the plan.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: We make sure everything in there is up to date so that when we're tooling it around in our heads and doing the math behind things, we're we're actually working with the right numbers.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: But I think the majority of the well, the majority of the meeting should be on what opportunities there are going forward or what obstacles that we have to navigate.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: And that's something you identify when you circle back to the financial plan, right?
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: You might look at cash flows in the future, what do things look like?
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Hey, you mentioned having a big major expense.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: Well, I can see that three, four years down the road, it's gonna cause a shortfall.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: We need to look at what's gonna come out of your portfolio, where do we take it from?
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Um so I think I think it all circles back to the plan, and I think I think you get a point there.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or even something like if you're a sales guy and you have a bad year and your income's down, right?
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Income's down, that's pretty that that stinks.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: But hey, can we take advantage of that to do a Roth conversion?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Or maybe the government starts a a war in the Middle East again and the markets are down, hey, maybe now's a good time to consider a Roth conversion for those in retirement.
- 10:29unknown: Right.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Do them in kind instead of selling the positions and doing it in cash.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: And the fun part about progress is really seeing if your net worth is going up or at least trending up.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Um so I think that's a key aspect as well.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: When you look into that financial plan, what also comes around?
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's tax planning conversation.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: What do you address there?
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Tax planning should be a year-round thing, right?
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: There should always be something going on in the tax planning sector.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Late in the year, I like to look at what capital gains have been realized.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: If there's a tax loss harvesting opportunity, uh maybe we can pull down from a concentrated position and do something to offset the the gain we have to realize.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: You know, another thing is, and this comes up pretty often, right?
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: U.S.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: citizens are pretty generous, charitable giving.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: How do we effectively do that?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Do we have to realize all the gain in a portfolio?
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Or if somebody's giving to their local church on a regular basis or local charities, can we take the cash that they would have contributed to the charity and give the charity a an appreciated position or a stock in an appreciation an appreciated position?
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know especially with the one big beautiful bill act that came out, there's been a few changes to charitable gifting.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: So revisiting that and the conversation uh is a big point.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: But yeah, all of this is lumped together, you know, especially when you know a client comes in and you're having that annual review conversation, and you know, you might not be going through the plan in thorough detail, or maybe you are, um, but hitting on some points.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Hey, we've got this plan built, let's just take a look at your cash flow into the future.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: Could be something, you know, quick, but then that leads to, hey, well, let's look at your taxes on this.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: You know, here's your estimated income, here's where it's coming from.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: What opportunities do you have this year for tax planning purposes?
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: Moving on to the big one, though, I think is is really what most advisors focus on, which is the investment portfolio review.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: What is your philosophy around that?
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Aaron Powell I think if there are major changes coming up in somebody's life, maybe they're getting close to retirement and it's time to dial back the risk a little bit.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Maybe we're going through a market downturn because of uh geopolitical affairs or something like that.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: I think the mistake that's made is when we focus too hard on how we did last year.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: We can't change that now.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: I d I think it should be mentioned, right?
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Because if we do if somebody makes 17% in a year, that's a pretty good thing.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: So if we can we can remind somebody, hey, you made 17% last year, that it translates to this amount in dollars.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: That's a pretty big deal.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: You one, you've accomplished something, right?
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Your net worth, like you said, your net worth tracking is getting some upward pressure.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: And then if we made any significant changes to the portfolio over that year, it might be worth talking about, but maybe maybe it was just a typical rebalance and we don't need to address it for longer than 10 minutes.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think um also just to add to that, I think a performance review could highlight some underperformance if you're comparing to a benchmark.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Maybe maybe you have a portfolio that maybe you're managing on your own, or maybe you have a portfolio out there where your advisor is not only your financial planner, uh, but he's also picking investments for you, which it's something we do a little differently here at Measured Wealth.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: We actually have uh a CIO and an investment team that puts together the portfolios and oversees those portfolios.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: But elsewhere, there's a lot of advisors that are you know also the investment counselor, or they're also choosing investments.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: And so some advisors are wearing multiple hats, but that's not always you know the best for every client.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: And if they're choosing investments, you never know.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: They could be falling short of a benchmark in some years, they could be outperforming a benchmark in other years, but that takes into then we have to do a deeper dive into what's in the portfolio, why is there overperformance in some years, why is there underperformance?
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: So it could highlight a few things like that.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Anything to add on that, Joe?
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I always think it's funny when we're managing assets and somebody keeps some outside just to have heard I want to see how you stack up before.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Heard that before.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: And it's always it is kind of fun to like, hey, this did 15% or this did 12%.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: How'd the other portfolio do?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: And you know, thankfully with Ed Miller at the helm and Craig backing them up, we get we usually do a bit better.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: We're in striking distance and that's where that's where you really need to be.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Um and I think the key is not to really you know focus solely on performance when it comes to an annual review.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: Um that's one piece, but it's not the entire entire review.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd I'd take it a step further and say that investment performance, while you want good investment performance, having your investments match your plan.
- 15:42unknown: Right?
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Because it's a it's a means to an end.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: It's not you're not putting a bunch of money away to go like, I don't know what I'm gonna do with this.
- 15:48SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: You you have a goal at the end.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: You want to retire, maybe you want to spend$150,000 a year.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Well, your investments for a little while are probably gonna have to be pretty growth oriented.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: You're gonna have to put a lot in them, but it's just one piece of that bigger plan.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, brings out the importance of asset allocation and risk planning versus uh returns.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: So um absolutely I like how I'm talking with my hands when a video.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Um other items to address during an annual review.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, we got to check in on good old death, uh beneficiaries in estate planning, right?
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: If your estate planning hasn't been updated in five or so years, you can just do a quick quick check-in on that, make sure everything's good.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Uh POAs tend to be a problem, powers of attorney, just because they can go stale and different custodians may or may not like ones that are older than five years.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: So it's important to check with your one-year investment advisor because they know the custodian probably a little better.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: And then talk to your estate planning attorney, or if you use a service for your documents, make sure that we're running them through our wealth.com platform to make sure they're up to date and still nothing's changed.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: May the state hasn't changed any regulations on how they have to be written, or maybe you've moved to Florida, as a lot of New Englanders do.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Well, we find so many examples of when someone creates estate planning documents like trusts, but some accounts don't get updated as far as titling goes.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Uh beneficiaries is something that needs to be reviewed on an annual basis.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: More importantly, how do you want your assets to be distributed upon your death?
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's something we have to think about.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: It's not what everyone really wants to think about, but uh it's just something that you know we need to address.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: So we're covering two of the per the two permanent things in life, turn your annual review, death and taxes.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: That's yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: The the other piece to that is actually longevity.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: You know, what if we live a long time?
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Well, actually, first with death, there's you know risk management and and what comes with that is are you adequately insured?
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: So determining whether you have the right amount of life insurance, disability, long-term care, things like that.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: But then the the longevity aspect, which also comes into the risk management play, is um maybe annuities.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: So I know part of our planning process is to really look at, hey, what does your secure income look like in the future?
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Um is it on the lower side versus your expenses?
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Do we need to factor in increasing your your secure income?
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Or, you know, do we need some downside protection from the market if your risk tolerance was on the conservative side?
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: So those all come into play as well.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: Final thoughts on rounding out a good annual review, Joe?
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: I think just making sure that you're preparing for the review, both sides, making sure that you get to the meeting and you stay for the meeting.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Don't cut out early.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Don't give a if you can't be there for an hour, don't schedule an hour, right?
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Um want to make sure that we're preparing for the appropriate time frame.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And then have the detailed action items after.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: Advisor and client should both have things that they are responsible for doing, leaving a meeting.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: So if you're updating a beneficiary on your outside accounts, that's gonna fall to you.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: If we need to update beneficiaries with the accounts you hold with us, that's on us.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get you those forms.
- 19:21unknown: Right.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's the great the that's the perfect way to to close an annual review.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: Outline those action steps, who's doing what, does anything need to change?
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: Uh maybe we maybe we need to update a plan, maybe we need a statement, maybe there's a beneficiary update that needs to be made.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: We could be entering the stage where um we're setting up uh withdrawal strategy.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, a lot of action items could take place uh from an annual review.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: So I I think we we we covered it all.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Well, Joe, thanks again for joining me today.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Uh this was a great conversation.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Exciting stuff, annual reviews.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: I know we covered a lot.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Um I just want to outline a few takeaways.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: A good annual investment review should focus on decisions rather than performance, should tie your life goals to your investments, and really leave a client feeling confident knowing that everything's being addressed as far as the question, are we still on track?
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: And if not, what needs to change?
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: If you have questions or would like to run through this process with either Joe or myself, give us a call.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: We would look forward to hearing from you.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: And with that, Joe and everyone, thank you again for joining me today.
