- 0:00Hey and welcome back to She Speaks Live podcast.
- 0:03I am thrilled you are here listening to today's episode.
- 0:07I want to start off by asking you some questions like how is
- 0:12Jesus both God and human? Or what does it mean to be
- 0:17complete in Christ? Or what does set your mind on
- 0:22things above actually look like practically?
- 0:25Or what does a Christ centered life really look like from
- 0:30day-to-day? Or how do I live with wisdom and
- 0:34intention? Or what does it mean to work as
- 0:38unto the Lord? And what does it mean to be
- 0:42rooted and built up in Christ? These are all questions that we
- 0:47will be walking through as we go through the next 4 episodes of
- 0:52Fuel Your Life series on the Book of Colossians.
- 0:57You know, as I was praying about what God would have for us next,
- 1:02He clearly put it on my heart to start with the Book of
- 1:06Colossians this year. So here I am, obedient to this
- 1:11assignment. Not sure where it will take us,
- 1:14but He knows because He knows you by name.
- 1:18He knows me by name and He knows why.
- 1:21You hit this button to play this episode and I am thrilled that
- 1:26you are here. You can follow along with me if
- 1:29you want. I'll be reading out of the NLT,
- 1:32which is the new Living Translation.
- 1:35I will also be taking us through a verse to personalize and
- 1:39reflect God's characteristic in the verse and how we can trust
- 1:43Him with the promise He gives to us.
- 1:47So let's begin with a brief overview about Colossians and
- 1:53who is written to. Apostle Paul wrote this letter
- 1:57to the Church of Colossae. One of the many reasons
- 2:01Colossians is such a powerful book of the Bible is that it
- 2:06focuses intensely on Jesus and encourages us to give Him first
- 2:12place in our lives. Paul, at the time of writing
- 2:16this letter, was imprisoned in Rome for his faith in Jesus
- 2:20Christ and had heard about the spiritual growth of the
- 2:24believers of Colossae and some difficulties that the church was
- 2:30actually encountering such as exposed false teaching and doubt
- 2:34on Jesus lordship. This is why throughout
- 2:38Colossians Paul exalts Jesus over everything such as worldly
- 2:43think, king, legalistic living and carnality and urges us to
- 2:49keep Jesus 1st and we will live a joyful and peaceful blessed
- 2:55life. OK so let's dive into Colossians
- 2:59chapter 1 for this episode and we will go through some of the
- 3:03greatest words of the Bible and how it applies to our lives.
- 3:09So Colossians, One begins with Paul clarifying who he is in
- 3:13Christ. It says this letter is from
- 3:16Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ
- 3:22Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.
- 3:25I love that right away it shows that Paul knows where his
- 3:29identity comes from. He says this letter is from
- 3:33Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ
- 3:39Jesus. Now apostle simply means one
- 3:42sent out by God to preach the gospel.
- 3:46And chosen means by the will of God, meaning that Paul was
- 3:51appointed by God and it wasn't just a matter of his own
- 3:55personal aspiration. I mean, how many of us can get
- 3:59called to do something for God? And it clearly wasn't coming
- 4:03from a place of something you wanted or that you were
- 4:06comfortable with, but you did it anyway to obey God, knowing that
- 4:12this is God's will for you. So Paul makes it clear that his
- 4:16call comes from God to spread the good news and emphasizes
- 4:22that the authority of his words came from God.
- 4:27I also love that in verse one, Paul includes Timothy and
- 4:31sending this letter to as it shows this deep bond of
- 4:36brotherhood. And then moving on to verse 2,
- 4:40it says we are writing to God's holy people in the city of
- 4:46Colossae who are faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 4:51May God our Father give you grace and peace.
- 4:55Now Paul addresses the people of Colossae as God's holy people
- 5:01who are faithful brothers and sisters.
- 5:04Right away we see that Paul is writing to the majority of
- 5:08believers, not ones who haven't heard the good news yet.
- 5:12So just in these two verses we see who is writing this Paul
- 5:17inspired by the Holy Spirit, God's words, and then who he's
- 5:20speaking to or writing to, which are us, Us that believe in Jesus
- 5:26Christ. OK, so moving on to verse 3.
- 5:29It says we meaning Paul and Timothy always pray for you and
- 5:34we give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 5:39Now Paul right here is giving a great example of the way we
- 5:43should always start out in prayer, giving God thanks like
- 5:47the psalmist said, entering his gates with Thanksgiving and his
- 5:51courts with praise. Now moving on to verse 4, For we
- 5:55have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for
- 5:59all of God's people, verse 5 says, which come from your
- 6:05confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven.
- 6:10You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the
- 6:15truth of the good news. Now Paul is commending the
- 6:19believers for their faith, love and hope.
- 6:22Now verse 6 it says the same good news that came to you is
- 6:27going out all over the world, is bearing fruit everywhere by
- 6:32changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day
- 6:36you first heard and understood the truth about God's wonderful
- 6:40grace. Now Paul is sharing about what
- 6:43the good news does as it spreads throughout, it changes lives, it
- 6:48produces spiritual growth and fruit to the body of Christ.
- 6:53Now moving on to verse 7, it says you learned about the good
- 6:57news from Epiphras, our beloved Co worker.
- 7:02He is Christ's faithful servant and He is helping us on your
- 7:08behalf. Verse 8 says He has told us
- 7:12about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.
- 7:17Now scholars have said that Paul never went to the city of
- 7:22Colossae and Epiphras was the one that got converted to being
- 7:27a Christ follower when Paul was preaching in Ephesus.
- 7:31And then Epiphras went back to his hometown and founded the
- 7:36church in Colossae. Now then continuing in verse
- 7:40eight, it was mentioned the love that the Holy Spirit gave them
- 7:44for each other. The the Christian love, it comes
- 7:48from God, his Spirit. The Word of God speaks about
- 7:52love as an action and attitude, not just an emotion.
- 7:57Love is a byproduct of our new life in Christ.
- 8:01We as believers should act on this love daily, looking after
- 8:06each other, having this outward focus, not just looking inward
- 8:11on our own self-interest. You know, so much of humanity is
- 8:16what's in it for me and it can get so gross.
- 8:19That's why I'm always at this heart posture of asking God,
- 8:23what would you want for others to hear?
- 8:26What do you want this podcast to be airing?
- 8:30What do you want to be talked about on this podcast?
- 8:34God for for others to encourage them.
- 8:38And this is a perfect example this Colossians study, you know,
- 8:43God told me to share this particular book of the Bible.
- 8:47And do I have the full reason why?
- 8:51No, but I do have some reasons why, which I'll get to in a few
- 8:56minutes. So verse 9 says, so we have not
- 9:01stopped praying for you since we first heard about you.
- 9:05We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and to
- 9:10give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.
- 9:14Verse 10 says then the way you live will always honor and
- 9:19please the Lord and your lives will produce every kind of good
- 9:23fruit. All the while you will grow as
- 9:28you learn to know God better and better.
- 9:31I just love that verse. So one of the things here that
- 9:36Paul was doing was he was addressing this issue where
- 9:39people were just accumulating, accumulating knowledge, and they
- 9:43thought by accumulating knowledge, that's what made them
- 9:47accepted by God. So he was addressing this, this
- 9:52false way of thinking, because knowledge itself is just empty.
- 9:57It should always proceed with a changed life and right living.
- 10:01God wants us to always be learning more about him.
- 10:05And you use that knowledge not just to hoard it and keep it to
- 10:09ourselves, but to help others. And as I was reading this, it,
- 10:14it came to my spirit that I've got to watch it.
- 10:18When I find myself consuming all this good teaching, all this
- 10:23good teaching at these Christian conferences, I better put that
- 10:27info, that knowledge into some use.
- 10:30God is expecting me to use what I learned to encourage others to
- 10:36not be just as the spectator, but be a participator for
- 10:40growing His Kingdom, 'cause when I do, I'm doing what verse 10
- 10:45says it. It brings God honor, it pleases
- 10:49Him, and it will produce every good fruit and I will grow and
- 10:53learning God better and better for my life.
- 10:58Now jumping into verse 11, it says, we also pray that you will
- 11:02be strengthened with all His glorious power, so you will have
- 11:07all the endurance and patience you need.
- 11:11Let me read that again. We also pray that you will be
- 11:16strengthened with all His glorious power, so you will have
- 11:22all the endurance and patience you need.
- 11:26May you be filled with joy. Verse 12 says, always thanking
- 11:32the Father. He has enabled you to share in
- 11:36the inheritance that belongs to His people who live in the
- 11:40light. Verse 13 For He has rescued us
- 11:44from the Kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom
- 11:49of His dear Son, verse 14, who purchased our freedom and
- 11:56forgave our sins. Now Paul reminds us in verse 11
- 12:02that strength comes from God's power and only by His strength
- 12:08in US will give us all the endurance and patience we need.
- 12:14We have all the power, all the endurance, all the patience we
- 12:18need. I mean, what a powerful verse to
- 12:20meditate on that God through his strength has given it all to us,
- 12:27all endurance, all patience. So the next time we feel like we
- 12:31can't go on, we're ready to quit.
- 12:34It seems too hard or your patience is low, or maybe it's
- 12:38just non existent. You're dealing with a difficult
- 12:41family member or relationship or a timing of something like a
- 12:46spouse or a baby. Remember that through His
- 12:50strength we have been given all we need.
- 12:54Now how do we get His strength? By consecrating on His word,
- 12:59devoting our time in His word and being in His presence.
- 13:05Paul says in the latter part of verse 11.
- 13:08It says, may you be filled with joy, because when we are filled
- 13:13with joy, we have the Lord's strength.
- 13:16It says in Scripture, the joy of the Lord is my strength.
- 13:21And where do we get joy? By being with Him.
- 13:25It's actually a fruit. It's the fruit of the Spirit.
- 13:29So it's in US and we draw it out by spending time with Him,
- 13:34letting His words soak down deep into our hearts and minds.
- 13:41You know, as I was doing this research and study on book of
- 13:44Colossians is specifically in this verse.
- 13:48The Lord just gave me this image picturing our hearts and minds
- 13:52as these sponges and I'm talking these big sponges, these big
- 13:56yellow fat sponges. And God's word is living water.
- 14:02It symbolizes living water, God's word.
- 14:06And as we devote more time in his word, our, our hearts and
- 14:11minds are those sponges soaking it up his living water that it
- 14:18says never runs dry. Jesus said it always satisfies.
- 14:23So the only way we will, we will run dry is if we let those
- 14:29sponges go dry by not participating or partaking in
- 14:35his word on a daily basis. So which drenches our, our
- 14:40spirits. It drenches our mind.
- 14:42We we, our minds get renewed by the word.
- 14:46The word washes through, washes our minds, washes in our hearts.
- 14:52It's it's the sponges that soak up the word of God and it gives
- 14:58us refreshment. It nourishes us.
- 15:01And verse 12, it says be always thankful to the Father.
- 15:05He has given an inheritance to those who belong to Him.
- 15:09The benefits of who we are in Christ that are given to us is
- 15:14our inheritance, which is eternal life, but also
- 15:18everything Jesus paid for on the cross.
- 15:22This includes freedom from sin and judgement giving us
- 15:25spiritual physical healing stated in Isaiah 53, four
- 15:29through 5, first Peter 224, Matthew 817 and we have
- 15:34authority. Jesus said Luke 10/19.
- 15:37He says I have given you all authority to trample over the
- 15:40power of the enemy and in Jesus name Matthew 28 by the finished
- 15:45work of the cross and resurrection, we are the body of
- 15:49Christ and therefore we are seated with him Co heirs with
- 15:52Christ and we find that in Ephesians 26 also inheriting the
- 15:57blessings that I highly encourage everyone to read about
- 16:01in Deuteronomy 28 when we obey and follow God's way.
- 16:06So now let's jump into verse 13. It says he rescued us from
- 16:10darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his Son Jesus.
- 16:17Now that word transferred means to be removed.
- 16:20We are removed from our old creation where we were walking
- 16:25foolishly in darkness under enemies power to to to now being
- 16:31a new creation walking in the light, having Jesus's power,
- 16:36wisdom and direction. Now verse 4 says he not only
- 16:41gave us freedom from sin, but he also forgave our sins.
- 16:46So beautiful, so much to be thankful for.
- 16:49And I can't see why Paul started out in that verse 12 with giving
- 16:54the Father thanks for sending a son for our salvation and the
- 16:58inheritance that we benefit benefit from as being his child.
- 17:04Now here we are about to get locked into one of the strongest
- 17:09statements about the divine nature of Christ found in the
- 17:13Bible. This is where I said I'd share
- 17:17later about why God set my heart on fire to talk about
- 17:22Colossians. So I have been scrolling on
- 17:25Instagram and came across this heretical sign.
- 17:29This certain group of people are putting up these giant
- 17:33billboards, these giant signs in certain States and having these
- 17:38billboards say Jesus is not God. It made the news because a Jesus
- 17:44follower was was committed to erasing the not word so it reads
- 17:50the truth that Jesus is God. So as I saw this, something was
- 17:57stirring in me. Something was happening inside
- 17:59of me. I was sad for what these people
- 18:02believe, that they didn't believe that Jesus was God.
- 18:07And I got this small glimpse as to how Jesus must feel when
- 18:12people don't believe who he is. When when Jesus was conceived in
- 18:17his mother's womb, the Virgin Mary, Jesus was all God and all
- 18:21human. Jesus was present before his
- 18:24birth. He was with God and the Spirit
- 18:26at creation. He was the word made flesh.
- 18:30In fact, John 11 says the word was with God.
- 18:35The word is Jesus and, and, and to back that up, Revelations
- 18:401913 says he wore Jesus, wore a robe dipped in blood, and his
- 18:47title was the word of God. Now I'm going back to John 11
- 18:52and it says the word was with God and the Word was God.
- 18:57He existed in the beginning with God.
- 19:00God created everything through him and nothing was created
- 19:03except through him. The Word gave life to everything
- 19:08that was created and his life brought light to everyone.
- 19:13The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never
- 19:17extinguish it. So after experiencing this thing
- 19:23that I saw on Instagram, I had a dream, which full disclaimer, I
- 19:30am not a big dreamer and not one that takes dreams.
- 19:34And I'm like, oh, it must have meaning all, you know, all the
- 19:38time. In fact, I usually forget the
- 19:41dreams that I do have. I don't even know what I dreamed
- 19:44about. But this particular dream was
- 19:47clear that God was showing me to dive into Colossians for this
- 19:54next four weeks on the podcast. Because the next morning, as I
- 19:59got this image of the book of Colossians in my dream, I, I sun
- 20:06through it, of course, first thing in the morning and I
- 20:08turned to Colossians. And I could see why God had me
- 20:12there. The people in Colossians were
- 20:15going through the same misconceptions from false
- 20:19teaching and and Paul was refuting this directly with the
- 20:23following verses that that we are about to read.
- 20:27And just like Paul, we need to share with others that Christ is
- 20:32supreme and that Christ is the visible image of the invisible
- 20:37God. He is Lordship.
- 20:40So let's dive into this passage I'm going to read in verses 15
- 20:46through 20, it says Christ is the visible image of the
- 20:52invisible God. He existed before anything was
- 20:57created and it is supreme over all creation.
- 21:02For through him God created everything in the heavenly
- 21:06realms and on earth. He made the things we can see
- 21:11and the things we can't see, such as Thrones, kingdoms,
- 21:16rulers and authorities in the unseen world.
- 21:19Everything was created through Him and for Him.
- 21:24He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation
- 21:28together. Christ is also the head of the
- 21:32Church, which is His body. He is the beginning, supreme
- 21:37over all who rise from the dead. So He is first in everything.
- 21:42For God, in all His fullness, was pleased to live in Christ,
- 21:47and through him God reconciled everything to Himself.
- 21:52He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of
- 21:57Christ's blood on the cross. Whoa.
- 22:03Everything you want to know about Jesus Christ and what he
- 22:06did there, it's all in that passage.
- 22:10So first, Jesus is the visible image of invisible God.
- 22:15He not only is God, he reflects God and he reveals God to us.
- 22:20He is supreme over all creation. He has all priority and
- 22:24authority. He came from heaven, not from
- 22:27the dust of the earth. And He is word of all.
- 22:31He is completely holy and has authority to judge the world.
- 22:35Therefore Christ is supreme over all creation, including the
- 22:39spirit world. We, like the Colossians, must
- 22:43believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, that He is God.
- 22:47This is the central truth of Christianity.
- 22:50We must oppose those that say Jesus is merely a prophet or a
- 22:54good teacher. And verse 19 and 20, it says God
- 22:58in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ.
- 23:04And through Christ God reconciled everything to
- 23:08himself. He made peace with everything in
- 23:11heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross by
- 23:16this verse made peace with everything through Christ's
- 23:20blood. Paul was simply refuting thus
- 23:23Greek ideology that Jesus cannot be human.
- 23:26And God at the same time. Christ was fully human and fully
- 23:31divine. He died on the cross as a human.
- 23:35Christ has always been God and always will be God.
- 23:39When we have Christ, we have all of God in human form.
- 23:43Christ's death provided us a way to God.
- 23:47It cleared away sin that keeps us from having a right standing
- 23:51relationship with God. When we said yes to Christ, we
- 23:55can have this peace knowing that Christ provided reconciliation
- 24:00for us on the cross. Which brings us to this next
- 24:03portion of scripture of what this reconciliation means to us
- 24:08and where we were before we knew Christ as our Savior.
- 24:13Verse 21 through 23, Paul says, this includes you who were once
- 24:19far away from God. You were his enemies, separated
- 24:23from him by your evil thoughts and actions.
- 24:27Verse 22 says, Yet now He has reconciled you to himself
- 24:32through the death of Christ and His physical body.
- 24:37As a result, He has brought you into His own presence and you
- 24:41are wholly and blameless as you stand before Him without a
- 24:47single fault. Again Paul pins and says Christ
- 24:52physical body making it known to any false teaching that Jesus
- 24:57wasn't an Angel or only spirit or some mystical being, but that
- 25:03Jesus suffered death fully as a human for us.
- 25:07So let's though read that Part 1 more time where we brought,
- 25:11where we are brought into his own presence.
- 25:14We are holy and blameless as we stand before him without a
- 25:19single fault. So when God Forgives our sins we
- 25:24are wiped clean from his perspective.
- 25:27It's as if we never sinned. When we approach Him and we
- 25:31repent and ask for forgiveness, it is forgotten.
- 25:35God sees us as holy and blameless, without fault.
- 25:40Not by our perfection, but what Christ did on the cross to
- 25:44reconcile us with God. That's God's grace.
- 25:48It's this unmerited favor. We didn't have to earn it.
- 25:52It's a gift given to us. This is deep and something we
- 25:56can so easily forget or dismiss how God sees us.
- 26:03So verse 23 it says, but you must continue to believe this
- 26:07truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the
- 26:10assurance you received when you heard the good news.
- 26:14The good news has been preached all over the world and I, Paul,
- 26:18have been appointed as God's servant to proclaim it.
- 26:22We have been reconciled with God.
- 26:25We can enjoy this new spiritual status and stay standing on the
- 26:30good news, the truth of the Bible.
- 26:33And so now we come to this last portion of the chapter, verses
- 26:3724 through 29. Paul says I am glad when I
- 26:42suffer for you and my body, for I am participating in the
- 26:46sufferings of Christ that continue for His body, the
- 26:50church. Paul is saying here that he is
- 26:53participating in the sufferings of Christ, that that suffering
- 26:58is those that oppose the redemption that Christ suffered
- 27:02for us. It's the suffering that the
- 27:04persecution of his people in a world that is hostile towards
- 27:10the message of Christ. And then Paul continues and
- 27:13says, God has given me the responsibility of serving his
- 27:18church by proclaiming his entire message to you.
- 27:22This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past,
- 27:26but now has been revealed to God's people.
- 27:30For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ
- 27:34are for you Gentiles too. And this is the secret Christ
- 27:38lives in you. This gives you assurance of
- 27:42sharing His glory. Verse 28 So we tell others about
- 27:46Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the
- 27:51wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God,
- 27:55perfect in their relationship to Christ.
- 27:59Verse 29 That's why I work and struggle so hard depending on
- 28:03Christ's mighty power that works within me.
- 28:06Now I wanted to clarify going back to verse 28 where it says
- 28:11we want to present them to God, perfect in the relationship to
- 28:15Christ. This word perfect means complete
- 28:19or mature. Paul is saying hey we want
- 28:22others to have a spiritual mature relationship with Christ.
- 28:26This is why we tell others about Christ and the wisdom that God
- 28:30gives us so we can impart unto others.
- 28:34And like Paul said, reminding us that it's based on Christ mighty
- 28:39power that works within us. Now I would love to finish up by
- 28:44pulling up one of these verses for us to personalize.
- 28:48So let's go back to the verses 9 and 10.
- 28:52So say this with me. God will give me complete
- 28:58knowledge of His will and will give me spiritual wisdom and
- 29:04understanding. Then the way I live will always
- 29:08honor and please the Lord, and my life will produce every kind
- 29:14of good fruit. All the while I will learn to
- 29:19know God better and better. I mean, how beautiful is this
- 29:24verse when we just personalize it?
- 29:26We take heed, take this personal truth and stand on it, and then
- 29:32we look for God's characteristics.
- 29:34In the Scripture verse, I see God's wisdom.
- 29:39In this verse. He will give me spiritual wisdom
- 29:41and understanding, and He will give us knowledge.
- 29:47He's a good father that God produces every kind of good
- 29:52fruit. And so we got to remember that
- 29:54God's word is his will, and we have all we need to get the
- 30:00wisdom and understanding from it.
- 30:02It says in James, you need wisdom.
- 30:06Ask and he will give you all the wisdom you need.
- 30:10God has given us believers a precious inheritance.
- 30:15Through Christ, we have been forgiven.
- 30:18We have been rescued from sin and darkness.
- 30:22We've been given eternal life with Him.
- 30:24Jesus is Lord and we are His to share in His glory.
- 30:30So if you've never actually made the decision to follow Jesus
- 30:35Christ, I can't think of a better time than invite you
- 30:39right now. I want to take you through
- 30:41Romans 10/9 through 11. It says if you openly declare
- 30:48that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
- 30:53him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 30:57For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right
- 31:01with God. It is by openly declaring your
- 31:04faith that you are saved. As the scripture tells us,
- 31:08anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.
- 31:13Verse 13 says, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
- 31:18will be saved. So if you've never prayed this
- 31:22prayer out loud and you want Jesus in your life and you want
- 31:27him to be your Savior, then let's pray this prayer together
- 31:32here. Say thank you Father, for I
- 31:35declare that Jesus is Lord and I believe in my heart that God
- 31:41raised Jesus from the dead. For as your scripture says,
- 31:46believing in my heart and declaring my faith, I will be
- 31:50saved. So I thank you that from here on
- 31:54out, I'm made new from sending your son Jesus Christ to die and
- 32:01be resurrected so I can live with you forever.
- 32:07And Jesus mighty name, Amen. So stay tuned for the next
- 32:12episode as we walk through chapter 2 of flashes together.
