Transcript
- 0:00Hello, this is Leslie and I am the host of the Why Not Today podcast.
- 0:04This is a podcast to celebrate people who have been courageous and said,
- 0:08Why Not Today?
- 0:09I started this podcast in honor of my father, Patrick Cain, who often did say,
- 0:13Why Not Today?
- 0:14I'm based in Reston, Virginia, a planned community right outside of Washington, D.C.
- 0:18and thanks for joining us today.
- 0:20And I have a guest today, Dr. Sherry, who I really don't know well.
- 0:23I've been on a call with her, but I'm excited to hear the story and
- 0:28let you guys hear her stories of courage.
- 0:31So I always like to talk before we get to meet the guest about connections and how we met.
- 0:35And one of my guests has been on here before, Mary Follily, who was a friend from years ago.
- 0:40We reconnected a couple of years ago.
- 0:43She has a podcast.
- 0:43I have a podcast with guests on each other's podcast.
- 0:46And we've been like doing calls and sharing ideas.
- 0:49And one day I was like, I said, I almost feel like I need a coach for my podcast.
- 0:53She's like, are you asking me?
- 0:54I'm like, I don't know.
- 0:55She goes, I have a better idea.
- 0:57She's like, how about a mastermind?
- 0:59And so she's like, I've got two friends in mind and I knew somebody.
- 1:03And so five of us came together and we've had two calls now, but it really feels like God put us together.
- 1:10And we've got more powerful women in line with what we're all doing.
- 1:15Different things, but the same.
- 1:17So I'm super excited to get to know you, Dr. Sherry, and hear more about you and your journey.
- 1:21So let's start with a quick introduction of you, Dr. Sherry, and fun facts.
- 1:27And then we'll get into the courage stuff.
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:29Well, Dr. Sherry is really Sherry, a woman just like every other woman, you know,
- 1:35navigating life, figuring out life, enjoying life.
- 1:39And now getting in a place in my life where I'm living really, really free.
- 1:44So that's who I am.
- 1:46Yeah.
- 1:47And a fun fact, you know, I was thinking about this and I'm like, I don't really have anything super fun about me.
- 1:53I think the only thing that, you know, we all have videos, simple C's.
- 1:58I think for me, it's that I get injured easily.
- 2:02And so I break bones frequently.
- 2:06Thank God I haven't broken.
- 2:07Yeah, I don't know.
- 2:09I haven't broken anything in recent years, but in my 20s and 30s, I broke something regularly.
- 2:17Toes, fingers, I broke my hand.
- 2:20Yeah, walking up the stairs, just walking up the stairs.
- 2:23You know, not doing anything adventurous.
- 2:25So that would be the story.
- 2:26There's stories around that.
- 2:30Oh, that's funny.
- 2:32So tell me, what does courage mean to you?
- 2:36Yeah, that's...
- 2:40Well, I would say the first thing that I've discovered about courage is that it's not something that you have to get.
- 2:48It's something you already have.
- 2:50So I have it.
- 2:51You have it.
- 2:52We all have it.
- 2:54So what it is, is it's a continual alignment of your actions with your convictions.
- 3:03Oh, I like that.
- 3:05That's how I see it.
- 3:07Yeah.
- 3:08Yeah, so like whatever you, you know, believe in, whatever you feel compelled to do, you know, we all get these things.
- 3:14And they're things that are in the back of our heads that we're like, they kind of nag at us.
- 3:20They chew at us a little bit and we tend to because we focus on what we see and what we think we should do, right?
- 3:28And the right path and all of that.
- 3:30We tend to kind of stuff it down, but that thing is always there, right?
- 3:33And so we feel it.
- 3:35We know it's there.
- 3:36Courage is taking that thing and making it alive and making choices in the moment that reflect that desire.
- 3:44That that's the only way that desire gets filled.
- 3:47Yeah, love that.
- 3:49I was just listening to a podcast this morning.
- 3:52Jamie Kern Lima, do you know her?
- 3:54I'm sure she's the woman that started it Cosmetica.
- 3:58Okay.
- 3:59Yeah, she started it and she's got a book coming out about being worthy and she started it because she had Rosacea and she was literally on the news and they were telling her that something was wrong with her face.
- 4:12So she started a company and everybody told her no.
- 4:14And she kept persevering and somebody, a big investor said, I think, you know, I'm interested.
- 4:21But then he said, yeah, based on your body size and the looks of you, you would not be a good person to promote.
- 4:27And she kept going and she had the courage to like say, you know what?
- 4:31What she said, God's rejection is God's protection.
- 4:36And she ended up telling her business to L'Oreal several years later for so many billion dollars.
- 4:42And she's like the richest woman in the world kind of crazy, just the courage.
- 4:49Yeah.
- 4:49So let's hear about you, your journey.
- 4:51What have you done courageous?
- 4:52I know you've had a professional career.
- 4:54Now you're doing a nonprofit.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:57What are you passionate about?
- 4:58Tell us about your courage and your journey and.
- 5:00Um, well, I actually have two stories, but I'll start with this one.
- 5:07And then if we have time for the other one.
- 5:09Because I think a lot of times we do compartmentalize as women like professional courage versus personal courage.
- 5:14And I think, again, they're the same thing, right?
- 5:17It's just living out what we know to be right and true.
- 5:22And so when I used to practice as a clinical psychologist, such a privilege, you know,
- 5:28such a beautiful privilege to be a part of people's lives and to hear their stories and to have them trust you and to have them be vulnerable with you.
- 5:36Really a beautiful process.
- 5:38I was good at it.
- 5:39All of the things it was, um, it was a blessing and I learned a lot.
- 5:43But what happened is I had a major shift.
- 5:46Um, and I wouldn't say it's a major shift.
- 5:48Maybe it was just that the shoulds of who I was supposed to be and how I was supposed to become a clinical psychologist and hang out in your own shingle.
- 5:57And you're supposed to do all these things.
- 5:59And I did all of the things.
- 6:00And then I realized, but wait, this isn't really what I wanted to do.
- 6:05And so, um, God started bringing to mind that truth, that this wasn't really what I wanted to do, that I wanted to go out and speak and teach.
- 6:15And I wanted to talk to human beings, like they're human beings, not like their, their science experiments where we have to figure out what's wrong with them.
- 6:24Right.
- 6:25And so that's the whole, um, you know, kind of platform of clinical psychology or any therapy work is to find out the problem, name it something, label it something and then treat the problem.
- 6:37Well, I think we're worth more than that.
- 6:40I know we're worth more than that.
- 6:41Um, one, I don't think we're broken.
- 6:43I don't think there's anything wrong with us in two.
- 6:45Um, we don't need to be treated.
- 6:48Right.
- 6:48We need to be, um, encouraged and reminded that we were created with a specific purpose and the idea is how do I access that, that thing that's nagging and how do I walk in that, right?
- 6:59Not how do I find out what's wrong with me so I could be like everybody else.
- 7:02Right.
- 7:03Um, yeah.
- 7:04So God brought that to mind and I started having trouble sleeping and at night and I was always high flying when I like something stern and I gotta say yes to something.
- 7:15Yes.
- 7:16That's what it is.
- 7:17And so I just decided I no longer would diagnose people and that eventually led to me shifting my career and shutting down my private practice.
- 7:28And no longer practicing as a clinical psychologist.
- 7:31Probably took a lot of courage.
- 7:35So courage is not, I just kind of address this.
- 7:38It's not a feeling.
- 7:40Right.
- 7:41It's not like, here we go.
- 7:42Watch me.
- 7:43Watch me do my thing.
- 7:45It's not that.
- 7:46It's, I feel so strongly about this that for me, I wasn't even going to waste my energy considering the consequences of that.
- 7:57That's awesome.
- 7:58I had to do it.
- 7:59I had to do it.
- 8:01And so it was the only way that I could have peace, you know, in my life.
- 8:05And so that's, that's what the courage is.
- 8:07It's just the doing.
- 8:08It's not that you know what you're doing when you're doing.
- 8:12It's not that you're fearless when you're doing.
- 8:14It's just the doing of what you feel compelled to do.
- 8:18And so, yeah, there were a lot of risks.
- 8:22There are a lot of consequences that came from that, you know, there's this, I think Leslie, I think that we confuse courage with outcomes that are always beneficial.
- 8:35And those outcomes aren't necessarily being the billionaire seller of IT cosmetics.
- 8:42Okay.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:44That's wonderful.
- 8:45But that's not, that's the outcome that we're looking for that we want to see, you know, what we can see.
- 8:52We kind of put our trust in what we can see.
- 8:54But the real outcome, the real outcome of aligning you're doing with what you feel compelled to do with your convictions is the piece that you have from that.
- 9:02Right.
- 9:03It's the, it's the fulfillment that you get from that.
- 9:07And that's something nobody can take from you.
- 9:09No, absolutely not.
- 9:10And I totally agree.
- 9:11You know, when I left corporate America, it was the same kind of thing.
- 9:14What are you doing?
- 9:15You have a massive degree and you're going to sell, you know, my full time career selling Mary Kay.
- 9:20And I'm like, yeah, I'm going to do it.
- 9:22Right.
- 9:22And but it gives me joy and fulfillment.
- 9:26And I love my life and so many people I know now are getting to the age of retirement.
- 9:31They're like, are you retiring?
- 9:32And they hate their life.
- 9:33They hate their job.
- 9:34No, I love what I do.
- 9:36You know, it fills my cup and fills other people.
- 9:39Yeah.
- 9:40Why not they is doing the same thing?
- 9:42And that's, I love that you said that, you know, it's, it's, um, I love the question,
- 9:47why not today?
- 9:48Because sometimes people will say, I'll wait, right?
- 9:52Until the timing is right.
- 9:53Until the ducks are lined up in a row.
- 9:55The timing is never right.
- 9:57Nope.
- 9:58Right.
- 9:58The timing is never, but the other, the, the Congress of that is, it's too late.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:03And why not today says, no, it's not.
- 10:06If I'm right.
- 10:07If I'm still alive and breathing.
- 10:08So if you're in retirement age and you hate your job, why not today?
- 10:13It's not too late to start listening to that thing that's in the back of your
- 10:17mind, going, go do this.
- 10:18Right.
- 10:19And so I have run into a lot of people recreating life and like, okay, what's next?
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:24In the line out today.
- 10:25And you know, my big why not today that I think I talked about a lot with this was
- 10:31when I quit my job and a lot of people question it and it wasn't like, has not replaced my
- 10:36income.
- 10:37It was like, there is a better world out there.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:39And literally I made the choice to quit my job, some arbitrary date.
- 10:43And I just knew I could work hard enough and I could still live.
- 10:46Six months later, my dad had a major stroke and I was able to be there and I didn't have
- 10:51to go to work.
- 10:52I didn't have to report to somebody and I had that flexibility.
- 10:54It who's, you know, when I made that choice in November, I have no idea what was going
- 10:58to happen.
- 10:59That's right.
- 11:00And, but I did say why not today and I did it and I think, you know, it's the big
- 11:05thing that's the little things that's listening to your heart.
- 11:07It's not listening to the world.
- 11:09I think I'm sure you've got a lot of people in a lot of comments like, what the heck are
- 11:13you doing?
- 11:14Oh, yeah.
- 11:15I mean, it was, um, are you okay?
- 11:18I do too.
- 11:19Are you okay?
- 11:21Sherry?
- 11:21Are you sure Sherry?
- 11:23You know, and, um, yeah, because when you do go from six figures to four, that's what
- 11:29happened to me when I followed that conviction and aligned my conviction.
- 11:33See, it doesn't mean that if you align your convictions with your actions that it's going
- 11:38to turn out, um, well in terms of material things for you.
- 11:44But the fulfillment that we were talking about the content and the peace that comes
- 11:47from that and the knowledge that for me, that I'm, I'm being obedient to God in my
- 11:52purpose, that the gifting that he gave me that I'm being obedient.
- 11:55I don't have to worry about that stuff.
- 11:57Right.
- 11:57Um, and so I think that the other piece of that.
- 12:03Of aligning your actions of being courageous is that you don't have to have the whole plan
- 12:09figured out.
- 12:10So when I shut down my practice, I really didn't know.
- 12:14I didn't have clarity.
- 12:16In fact, I started shutting down my practice in 2016.
- 12:19I didn't renew my license to practice in 2018 finally.
- 12:23So there was no more that.
- 12:24Right.
- 12:25And then it wasn't until we're in 2023.
- 12:28It's been the last six months that I have crystal clear clarity on what my it is.
- 12:35Okay.
- 12:36So I say that to say that's seven years.
- 12:42Right.
- 12:42Right.
- 12:43So when you step out and you start doing, you will get there, but you can't have in
- 12:48your mind, I'll do it once I have the whole plan figured out because the plan comes to
- 12:54fruition as you're doing the doing.
- 12:56Absolutely.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:57You know, and it's having the faith to say, okay, I'm going to take those little steps
- 13:01of yes, why not today's?
- 13:02Yes.
- 13:03To reach that.
- 13:04And my guess that I had on two weeks ago was the same kind of thing.
- 13:08It was a God conviction and you went into a ministry, but that it took probably about
- 13:14the same time as you, you know, and it takes time.
- 13:17And when we started this podcast recording, I told you, I don't record, I don't edit it.
- 13:22I record it.
- 13:23And it's one of those things actually probably I'll get there, but it's purposely not completely
- 13:28perfect.
- 13:29Right.
- 13:30It's just giving people hope to just do the one thing and take the one step and try the
- 13:34thing.
- 13:34Right.
- 13:35So, and speaking of not perfect, I'm here, how sitting and dog sitting and the dogs usually
- 13:39sleep all day.
- 13:40Now it's playing with the toy.
- 13:41Of course.
- 13:42And that's the background noise, little jack behind us.
- 13:45So let's talk about what you're doing and what you left your full time or your practice
- 13:50for and you can just, and just when we, I just asked you that question, your face lit up.
- 13:55Yeah.
- 13:56Well, it's because I'm doing exactly what I know I'm supposed to be doing and all of
- 14:02my actions are aligned with that.
- 14:04So there's no gap in between what I want to do and what I am doing.
- 14:08Right.
- 14:09That's the problem.
- 14:10What do you do?
- 14:11So what I am doing is I have a nonprofit.
- 14:15It's called thriving thoughts global.
- 14:17I founded it in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 after I had the courage to leave a
- 14:21relationship and ended up in the basement of a friend's house.
- 14:25A lot can happen from the space of darkness for those of you listening.
- 14:29Yeah.
- 14:30So I started this nonprofit and the vision is to redefine mental health to teach people
- 14:36what it is as opposed to what it is not and to teach them that they can build and protect
- 14:41their own by changing the way that they think.
- 14:44So I tell people I left team treatment for team prevention.
- 14:47So that's what the nonprofit is doing.
- 14:50That's awesome.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:52So you said you had another story you wanted to share.
- 14:55Well, I kind of alluded to it.
- 14:57That was the second courageous thing that I did was I had been in a relationship that
- 15:03I thought was it.
- 15:05You know, I thought it was my forever.
- 15:07I was 40 when I got into the relationship.
- 15:10We were together almost five years.
- 15:12We were living together.
- 15:14I thought this was my it but something in the back of my mind.
- 15:18And if I'm honest, since year two, maybe the end of year one together, I knew this wasn't it.
- 15:24Okay.
- 15:25But everything I did, I tried to make that nag go away and it wouldn't and thank God it
- 15:34wouldn't thank God it wouldn't.
- 15:35And so but as this was happening professionally where I was, you know, shutting down my practice
- 15:40and kind of navigating my path forward started doing some organizational consulting started
- 15:45doing some thought coaching work as this whole idea of what it looks like to take charge
- 15:50of your thought space was developing and in improving your mental health.
- 15:56My relationship was deteriorating because precisely because I was doing that work.
- 16:02Right.
- 16:03And so I understood for myself that this was not something that I could stay in.
- 16:08There was a there was a my own timing to that where I had to come to a place of seeking
- 16:14and listening and really being ready that come what may this was a decision I needed
- 16:19to make like the leap I made when I shut down my practice.
- 16:22This is very different one though, right?
- 16:24It's your it's it's a it's your heart.
- 16:26It's a heart leap.
- 16:28Personal one.
- 16:29And so I made the decision.
- 16:31I'm going to have a conversation.
- 16:33And if I don't hear what I need to hear in this conversation, then I'm going to leave.
- 16:37And so we have the conversation that night.
- 16:40I was I couldn't even contain myself.
- 16:42So I was teaching a college class and I was on my way home from the college class and
- 16:47I just said, Hey, we need to talk.
- 16:48I can't wait till we get home.
- 16:49We need to start talking now and finish the conversation when I got home and I just said,
- 16:54OK, all right, well, then I'm moving out and within five days.
- 16:59I had everything moved out.
- 17:00I was into a friend's basement because I had nowhere to go.
- 17:04I write my career had ditched.
- 17:06So I really didn't have a lot financially to go on at the time.
- 17:10And I had my two big dogs and my friend just happened to say in another conversation entirely,
- 17:16you can come and stay in my basement and you can bring your two dogs.
- 17:19And I'm so excited for you.
- 17:21This is the beginning of a new chapter and it was so awesome.
- 17:24Got to love those friends too.
- 17:26Yeah, you have those people in your life that are just there for us.
- 17:30Yeah.
- 17:32Let's talk about your nonprofit and how you help people and how how is it
- 17:35a nonprofit rather than a for-profit?
- 17:38And I know you're writing a book.
- 17:40So let's talk about all the things you're doing around that and how you can assist people or.
- 17:44Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:45So the nonprofit again is it's all about messaging and awareness.
- 17:50So it's creating mental health literacy.
- 17:53It's giving every person the understanding that if you live and breathe and exist,
- 17:58you have a mental health, right?
- 18:00Mental health is not reserved for certain people.
- 18:02So the biggest part of what we do is messaging or redefining it.
- 18:06We're saying mental health is thinking, feeling and doing on purpose for your benefit and growth.
- 18:13That's what mental health is.
- 18:14Mental health is not anxiety.
- 18:16Mental health is not depression.
- 18:17That's mental ill health.
- 18:19Mental health, thinking, feeling and doing on purpose, right?
- 18:22So self-awareness, being deliberate, being intentional to align your actions with what you say you want.
- 18:29That's one of our tenants.
- 18:30We have seven tenants that people can find on the website, by the way, which is thrivingthoughtsglobal.org.
- 18:35So that's the biggest piece is messaging.
- 18:37So we do that through billboard campaigns, social media campaigns, YouTube videos.
- 18:45We're developing a podcast.
- 18:46All of our messaging is the biggest piece.
- 18:49And then we narrow that down into having community conversations.
- 18:54So where we can talk about mental health in the way that we're really talking about mental health.
- 19:00So we have a gathering called Grounded that I host in Franklin County, Pennsylvania,
- 19:07where I am once a month at a coffee shop and people are welcome to come.
- 19:11That information is on the website.
- 19:13Welcome to come.
- 19:14And we just have conversations.
- 19:15I ask questions and it gets people to think differently.
- 19:18So that's taking that messaging and starting to apply it now personally.
- 19:23And then the next level of work that we offer is online courses.
- 19:28Those will be launching in 2024.
- 19:31And the first online course.
- 19:33So these are courses that are for highly targeted audiences to who are going through certain experiences
- 19:42to give them the tools to thrive to grow through these experiences that they go through,
- 19:48as opposed to coping with or managing.
- 19:51And so the first one that we're developing is based on my first solo book,
- 19:56which was Breakup Breakthroughs.
- 19:57That's available on Amazon.
- 19:59If anybody wants to check that out.
- 20:00That was written in my friend's basement after I left.
- 20:04And it's 10 questions to ask and answer so you can thrive in the trauma of a relationship breakup.
- 20:09So that will be the first one that we're doing,
- 20:12but there will be other ones that will be about your spouse's diagnosed or and or maybe dies with brain cancer.
- 20:20You are moving in your child is having trouble adjusting to school like just normal life stuff that we go through
- 20:28that when we respond to it with intense feelings,
- 20:31we can sometimes based on the current mental health system structure,
- 20:35we can sometimes say there must be something wrong with me.
- 20:38Right. There's nothing wrong with you.
- 20:39You're human.
- 20:40You're responding to this in a normal way.
- 20:43And then the very, very base level of what we do,
- 20:46the most narrow point of service provision is thought coaching.
- 20:50And right now I provide that that's virtual.
- 20:52It's individual.
- 20:54That's also the highest cost, right?
- 20:55So all of the messaging and the awareness and the education, all that is free.
- 20:59But you get down to the individual level and that's that's a cost to the consumer.
- 21:05And I do that right now, but the eventual goal is I will be training certifying T.T.G.
- 21:11certified thought coaches who will be able to then go and do that as well.
- 21:16So that's how we redefine mental health and teach you to prioritize your own.
- 21:21Love that.
- 21:21And I love the thrive component that, you know, we're not just surviving, but we're thriving.
- 21:27I had a conversation with somebody recently who unfortunately think it was more evidence,
- 21:33more often I've heard of relationships that have kind of fallen up, crumbled or stopped during COVID.
- 21:41And I think it was realization like, okay, what am I doing?
- 21:44Like, let's reevaluate life listening to ourselves.
- 21:47But I was talking to somebody who they never had children and her husband was very much
- 21:52introverted and they did everything pretty much themselves.
- 21:55And so she looked at me.
- 21:56She's like, she asked me a question I never had anybody asked me how to do escape marriage.
- 22:01I'm like, okay, nobody's ever asked me that.
- 22:03But she's learning how to be friends and have friends and have those relationships with people
- 22:10not in like a long term loving marriage relationship, but friends.
- 22:15And because I've never been married, I've got a great group of friends and I'm talking
- 22:19to somebody else recently divorced and she's like, need to talk about how do you thrive being single?
- 22:25Like the world tells us, you know, we have to be married, have to be in this relationship.
- 22:30But, you know, you can thrive in all areas of your life.
- 22:33And I love that you're addressing that and talking about it.
- 22:37And it's such a big need.
- 22:39I've interviewed somebody else on this.
- 22:41Laura Hayes and she talked about she's got a group called Brave Girl Project.
- 22:46Okay.
- 22:46Teenagers and teenage girls and starting young.
- 22:49And that's one of my passions with Mary Kay also is to help the young girls teach them how to take
- 22:54care of their skin and teach them how to feel good about themselves.
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:59Like girl self-esteem they said is highest at age 10, which is really scary.
- 23:04I think it's probably or I mean, it's probably earlier now.
- 23:08If I look back at my own story, I went on my first diet diet like saltine crackers, cottage cheese,
- 23:16tuna fish, right at eight.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:20So and that was back in the eighties.
- 23:22Yeah.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:24Just crazy.
- 23:25So yeah, I love what you're doing and helping people.
- 23:28And when we're before we're done, I'll have you share how people can get in touch with you.
- 23:33I've gone on your website, but I haven't dived deep into it, but I'm going to.
- 23:36And I think we've got lots of great resources and connections.
- 23:39I knew I wanted you to be on here just to share your story.
- 23:42So let's talk about how do you encourage other people to be courageous to do the things to listen to their
- 23:48heart and their God calling.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:54The first thing that I do as a thought coach as a messenger of all of this is understanding that the
- 24:01first thing you have to do is be honest with yourself.
- 24:04And if you can't be honest with yourself, you're never going to.
- 24:13You're never going to fulfill your God given purpose because the way I describe it is we spend,
- 24:21especially as women, we spend, if you look back to when you were a little girl, you will see.
- 24:29Who you are.
- 24:30You will see who you are.
- 24:31The person you are.
- 24:32For me, I hid myself away.
- 24:34I recorded myself like I was speaking to people.
- 24:38I wrote stories.
- 24:40I entered them into contest.
- 24:41I mean, I was a speaker, a writer, all of that before I came back to being that.
- 24:47And when we look back at who, yeah, when we look back at who we were when we were a little girl,
- 24:52we see a lot of who God designed us to be.
- 24:55But then what we do is we start piling on all of these shoulds and they're like layers, right?
- 25:01And then we get older and then we start to realize, wait, that's not part of me.
- 25:05Okay, let me take that off.
- 25:07Wait, that's not part of me.
- 25:08Okay, let me take that off.
- 25:09And but the only way to do that is to start investigating.
- 25:13Is this really me or is this who I think I should be?
- 25:17Is this who somebody has told me to be?
- 25:19Right?
- 25:19Like where am I?
- 25:22Where am I getting my ideas?
- 25:24Where am I getting my worth?
- 25:25Where am I?
- 25:27When I go out, am I looking to get somebody's feedback, right?
- 25:32Or am I looking to be me?
- 25:34So it's a bit, that's essentially how I do it.
- 25:36I get people to be honest with themselves by asking them questions that get them to think differently.
- 25:42And I'll leave you with this very, very short one.
- 25:46When you say, I have to do something, my question is, do you have to?
- 25:53Where?
- 25:54The answer always.
- 25:57Always.
- 25:58Don't challenge me.
- 25:59If you're going to be wrong, the answer is always no.
- 26:02Right.
- 26:03Right.
- 26:04But as soon as we can be honest with ourselves and say, I choose to, then we can start evaluating.
- 26:10Why am I choosing?
- 26:14Yeah.
- 26:14Do I want to choose that?
- 26:15Right?
- 26:16Yeah.
- 26:18You know, I do these to share with people and give people hope and share people's stories.
- 26:22But really, I think I get more happy than anybody else.
- 26:25Taking pages of notes and like, all right, some things I was struggling with last night thinking about.
- 26:30You just gave me lots of confirmation.
- 26:32So thank you.
- 26:32Oh, good.
- 26:33Thank you for your questions.
- 26:36Nothing wrong.
- 26:37There's lots that, you know, following our dreams.
- 26:41Yes.
- 26:42You know, and that's what I'm doing with this.
- 26:43Yeah.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:45Excited about touching lives and helping people and all the people that God has just putting in my path that
- 26:52send their visions and hearing people's stories.
- 26:55I'm like, oh my goodness, we have to share your story.
- 26:58Just so many cool stories and people.
- 27:00Thank you for making a platform for us to be able to do that and share with one another and encourage.
- 27:05I mean, I think that's, that's courageous, right?
- 27:08Is sharing your story, especially in the space that we call the in between, right?
- 27:13Because like my nonprofit isn't what I envision it to be, but it is exactly as it should be right now because I'm showing up in it every day.
- 27:21Right.
- 27:22Right.
- 27:22And I still have ideas and I still have big things that we want to accomplish, but I don't need to be at the I sold my, my nonprofit is impacting billions of people across the globe place to share my story of courage.
- 27:38And I say that to say, we don't need success stories.
- 27:42We need courage stories in the in between.
- 27:44So thank you for providing a space for that.
- 27:47My pleasure.
- 27:47And, you know, and I think the thing that attracted me to this story that it cosmetics is not the billion dollar sale, but she's writing this book about being worthy.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:57And all the things that she was told she couldn't or all the self-worth things.
- 28:02And like this book, she's writing 100% of the profits are going to charity.
- 28:05And, you know, she's using her message for good.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10And it's, you know, those courageous steps.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:13One thing after the other.
- 28:14And that's right.
- 28:15One step in front of the other and you don't need to know what comes next, but you can't stop.
- 28:20Yeah.
- 28:21Just taking those steps and realizing I'm going to share this lot.
- 28:24I wear a starfish neck necklace often.
- 28:26Do you know the story of the starfish?
- 28:28No.
- 28:29This guy was walking down the beach and if you listen to this podcast, you probably heard me tell you many times, but this guy was walking on the beach and picking up starfish and throwing him in the ocean and picking up starfish and throwing him in the ocean.
- 28:39And they're like, what are you doing? Because I'm saving the starfish because there's thousands here. You will never make a difference.
- 28:46And he picks one up and throws it in the water and said, I made a difference with that one.
- 28:49Yeah.
- 28:50I just feel like every day that we can just make a difference in one person's life.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:54Maybe it's just their own.
- 28:56And that's right.
- 28:56You know, and you never know the ripple effect and the person you meet and just how I connect with you.
- 29:02Yes.
- 29:02And from Mary, who I met years ago, I totally loved touch with and it was, you know, a God moment that I was driving through Richmond and I was just reached out for him like, huh, you want me for coffee?
- 29:14And it reconnected us and so many things in my life have happened because of that one thing.
- 29:19So I really try to listen to that voice and it sounds like you do too.
- 29:23God's voice does do this thing.
- 29:24I have a courage to say, you know, why not today?
- 29:27That's right.
- 29:28Yeah.
- 29:29So thank you so much for being on.
- 29:30Anything else you want to share before we end this?
- 29:35How do people find you and connect with you?
- 29:37And I will share it in the show notes.
