- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balance Life Chiropractic. We have doctor Harley. We've been chatting
- 0:04Speaker 1: about back to school and we're getting close.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I know that thought might make some of you shutter,
- 0:09Speaker 2: You're like, oh please no, or maybe some of you're like, finally,
- 0:11Speaker 2: schools back.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I remember when I was a kid, and I don't
- 0:15Speaker 1: know why this is the one that I remember, because
- 0:17Speaker 1: like I had I don't know, probably a dozen backpacks
- 0:20Speaker 1: from the time I was a kindergartener all the way through.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But I remember I had a green backpack with Gizmo
- 0:25Speaker 1: from the Gremlins.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if I've actually seen that.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So and then my brother had a red backpack with
- 0:32Speaker 1: stripe like the Gremlin, the mean one. So I don't
- 0:36Speaker 1: know why we had those, but those were That was
- 0:38Speaker 1: like my favorite backpack. But when you have a backpack
- 0:40Speaker 1: filled with stuff that could be bad on the back,
- 0:42Speaker 1: can't I right?
- 0:43Speaker 2: You know, all the things we'll be talking about over
- 0:46Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks. You know, backpack placement is
- 0:48Speaker 2: a very important one. You would think with all this technology.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You know, kids have chromebooks or iPads or whatever, you know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: screen that they're using in.
- 0:56Speaker 1: School, even smartphones.
- 0:57Speaker 2: They wouldn't even need book bags or you know, need
- 1:00Speaker 2: to carry all these books, but it still seems like
- 1:02Speaker 2: they carry each and every one of their books with them.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Well, there's companies who want to sell the books there.
- 1:06Speaker 1: That's what's going on ebooks right now. They want to
- 1:09Speaker 1: sell you a book book because they get more money for.
- 1:12Speaker 2: That, right. So a very important thing to look at
- 1:16Speaker 2: is how much is your kid's backpack weighing? And how
- 1:20Speaker 2: much does your kid weigh. If you have, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: the smallest little kid in your class and they're carrying
- 1:25Speaker 2: the biggest, heaviest backpack, that might not be great for
- 1:30Speaker 2: their growing spines and their bodies. They say a kid's
- 1:33Speaker 2: backpack should weigh less than ten percent of their body
- 1:37Speaker 2: weage very nice.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So if you're like a sixty pound kid, it should
- 1:41Speaker 1: be six pounds.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Or less, right, which you know, if you think of
- 1:44Speaker 2: all this stuff you're putting in it, that's probably you're
- 1:46Speaker 2: probably way over that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So what are some things that you can do, because like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's not up to
- 1:51Speaker 1: the parents what they you know, because if they have
- 1:53Speaker 1: homework and all these classes, it's not really up to
- 1:55Speaker 1: the parents on that. Are there better backpacks that they
- 1:58Speaker 1: can have? Maybe?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, you can. Don't really avoid the weight because
- 2:01Speaker 2: you have to take your whole you know, locker with
- 2:04Speaker 2: you to every single room. I'm we're doing that in
- 2:06Speaker 2: high school. It's like you didn't have time to get
- 2:08Speaker 2: for class class, you took the whole thing with you.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So making sure you're wearing your backpack properly is the
- 2:13Speaker 2: number one most important thing. I know, it's cool to
- 2:16Speaker 2: wear it one's shoulders look it off one side, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: you're going to be leaning more to that one side
- 2:21Speaker 2: versus you know, having both straps on, having it tightened
- 2:25Speaker 2: to where that backpack is sitting pretty tight to your body,
- 2:28Speaker 2: not you know, not feeling like it's almost down to
- 2:31Speaker 2: your butt and you're like leaning backwards because that backpack
- 2:33Speaker 2: is so heavy. So making sure that those backpacks are
- 2:36Speaker 2: tightened to a good level that it's comfortable, it's sitting
- 2:39Speaker 2: up a little bit higher on their back to support
- 2:42Speaker 2: all of that weight.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And this is when people are buying those for the
- 2:45Speaker 1: back to school ten That's why I wanted to talk
- 2:46Speaker 1: about it early. Is there a certain kind we should
- 2:48Speaker 1: be looking for?
- 2:49Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think there's a specific brand or anything
- 2:52Speaker 2: like that that makes a difference. It's really about, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: does it have you know, some good shoulder padding, does
- 2:57Speaker 2: it have two straps? You know, I think of even
- 3:00Speaker 2: hiking backpacks that might seem a bit extreme, but does
- 3:02Speaker 2: have like a belt that goes across the body, because
- 3:06Speaker 2: there's some hiking backpacks like that, but that might be
- 3:08Speaker 2: a little overkill for a school bag.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like I get a lot of homework, so
- 3:12Speaker 1: I also have a ten ten here so I can
- 3:14Speaker 1: stop on the way home and take a nap, right,
- 3:16Speaker 1: So yeah, that.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Would be the biggest thing is when you're backpack shopping,
- 3:19Speaker 2: how does it fit your child? Is it seem like
- 3:21Speaker 2: it's massive and way bigger than them? Or when you
- 3:25Speaker 2: put it on them and you strap it properly, where
- 3:28Speaker 2: does it hit them? When you know, sitting against their back,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you want a little bit higher up in the back.
- 3:32Speaker 2: You don't want it sitting down towards their butt.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And maybe have a discussion with your kiddos as well,
- 3:36Speaker 1: just saying hey, if you don't need to have it
- 3:38Speaker 1: in there, don't have it in there. Because I remember
- 3:40Speaker 1: my brother used to carry all kinds of stuff in
- 3:42Speaker 1: his backpack that he didn't even need.
- 3:43Speaker 2: In there, right, I think you're going on a ten
- 3:46Speaker 2: day trip with all the things you start throwing in
- 3:48Speaker 2: your bag.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so again some things there. We'll chat about more
- 3:52Speaker 1: back to school stuff as we get closer. And I
- 3:54Speaker 1: know there's some people that are super excited about back
- 3:56Speaker 1: to school and there's some that dread it. And were
- 3:58Speaker 1: you a school person? Were you excited for school when
- 4:01Speaker 1: it came back?
- 4:02Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a doctor, so I guess I did
- 4:04Speaker 2: kind of like So I did like school. It was
- 4:06Speaker 2: always I enjoyed the classes and learning. I was not.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I couldn't wait to get I graduated early and got
- 4:11Speaker 1: the heck out of there. So, but whether you are
- 4:13Speaker 1: excited for school or if you're not excited for school,
- 4:16Speaker 1: if you've got kiddos going, it's going to be here
- 4:17Speaker 1: before you know it. If they would like to check
- 4:20Speaker 1: in with you guys ahead of time and maybe get
- 4:21Speaker 1: a little a little health check up with you here
- 4:24Speaker 1: at Balanced Life Chiropractic, what is the best way for
- 4:26Speaker 1: them to connect.
- 4:27Speaker 2: John, that's a great idea of getting your nervous system assessed,
- 4:31Speaker 2: get your spine checked, make sure that your body is
- 4:34Speaker 2: ready for back to school, be it the parents' body
- 4:36Speaker 2: or the kid's body for both. Right, I'm just going
