- 0:00Marshall, great to see you here. We're down in the pits.
- 0:02This is where I feel most comfortable with the football
- 0:05connection. And I usually like to guess
- 0:07which position each pit crew guy played in football.
- 0:11But we did kind of give it away. You know James Leronitas, I'm
- 0:14just coach on Ohio State. Yeah, big time guy, Great guy.
- 0:16By the way, shout out to James. Obviously when I played with the
- 0:19Rams, he was one of the mentors, one of the Ogs there.
- 0:21So, you know, small world, right?
- 0:23And I understand why you like being in the pit this way, that
- 0:25this way the athletes are. We so we were, yeah, we were
- 0:27talking about that last time. Like save it.
- 0:29I want to, I want to talk to you down to the pits on camera, but
- 0:32what do you need to be successful here?
- 0:35I mean, everyone is an athlete, but I've seen scouts there for
- 0:39pit crew at pro days. So what are they looking for?
- 0:42Well, you talking about doing the impossible tasks We're
- 0:44trying to change 4 tires, full tank of field.
- 0:46We try to do that in eight seconds.
- 0:47And how you do that, you go get the top notch athletes, but not
- 0:50only get out top notch athlete, but you got to have IQ as well.
- 0:53Yeah, by me being a Jackman, I'm like the quarterback so that it
- 0:56can't it starts with me and it ends with me.
- 0:58So just having the IQ and understanding when the car
- 1:01should come up and when it should come down, making sure
- 1:03everybody doing their job fast, but make sure they do it
- 1:06precisely. And if you're able to do that
- 1:07with your five team, with your chemistry, you'll be successful
- 1:10in the pits. So what's the key to good
- 1:12communication? I mean it's like 9 seconds of
- 1:14what you guys are doing down here in your training all year
- 1:17round for those 9 seconds each each week.
- 1:19So what's the key to communication?
- 1:22Just it ain't the key to communication, but repetition,
- 1:25doing it over and over and over so when like my changes, I don't
- 1:28have to hear or I don't have to see, but I can hear by doing it
- 1:31over and over, I know the sound of it and understanding,
- 1:35understanding the. Sound and if it sound right that
- 1:37mean we right and we moving. Out of.
- 1:38What is that sound? It ain't a click A a bud a.
- 1:43Bud or room? Room What?
- 1:46What? What's the sound that makes
- 1:47them? Feel right so it's kind of hard
- 1:49to explain because it's the nature of a gun so whatever gun
- 1:53they. Have it make a different type of
- 1:54sound, whether if it's on, whether if it's off, whether if
- 1:56it's tight, whether if it's not. So me understanding.
- 1:59That because I got to understand it because if I drop the Jack
- 2:01and if it's not on. That's how.
- 2:03You can go flying on pit. Road then we go get suspended
- 2:05for a couple weeks, so a lot. Of it lays in our hands.
- 2:07Yeah, it's pretty technical. I was wondering if there's any
- 2:09code words you guys are using Like you know, like you said,
- 2:12you're the quarterback, are you like any play calls you're
- 2:16calling? Now we just got to we just got
- 2:17to execute whatever the crew chiefs tell us.
- 2:19So the crew chiefs be on top of the box and whenever the car
- 2:22come in he say he want XY and Z and we complete that to the team
- 2:25all. Right.
- 2:25Well, if we were to do it like right now on the fly, if we were
- 2:28going to do a quarterback play call in the pits, what would it
- 2:30be like A 642 zoom zoom set tire like what's?
- 2:36The if you if we had an emergency stop, he was like we
- 2:38coming in fellows, 4 tires and fuel and with these guys that we
- 2:42all miked up. So you'll see everybody moving
- 2:45at 100 mph, wait for that guy to come in and do a pit stop.
- 2:48But we all miked up during the race.
- 2:49So whenever he made that call, all of us ready and into.
- 2:52I love when they're miked up out on the field, but here in the
- 2:54pits, who's the most vocal? Who?
- 2:56I mean, it's pretty serious out on the track, but I mean, you
- 2:58guys, I, I mean, you guys are laughing back here behind the
- 3:01scenes. So who?
- 3:03What's your radio? Like our group is very, very,
- 3:05very vocal. We probably one of the most
- 3:07vocal teams on Pit Rd. either you'll see we probably one of
- 3:09the only teams that throw the football around.
- 3:11You have to because we're comfortable.
- 3:12But when it comes to the most vocal person, it's definitely
- 3:15Austin Holloman. We can't get that guy to shut up
- 3:16down the radio. That's.
- 3:17Great though. And I hear so let's say there's
- 3:19feelings you guys do this year round.
- 3:21I feel like there's so much people don't know about pit
- 3:23crew. You guys are full time and then
- 3:25you have alternates as well, right?
- 3:26Absolutely. OK, so you you what did you do
- 3:29to get into this position? Like are you part time and so
- 3:31you can work your way into full time?
- 3:32Like what makes you guys the elite?
- 3:34Team well, a lot of guys come in, they have to be on the
- 3:36developments card because it's not an easy task.
- 3:38So it's something you have to grasp, something you have to
- 3:40work out and if you put in the work, eventually you'll get an
- 3:42opportunity. Just like any sports, you have
- 3:44injuries, you have guys that age out, you have you know, specific
- 3:48stuff that happens in it and a person to get the opportunity
- 3:52and use the people that are ready for that opportunity.
- 3:54They take advantage of it and they say, you know, nice them
- 3:57and waiting for the next group to come in.
- 3:58If you guys, we're going to to keep doing some football
- 4:01connections here. But I was just thinking and I'm
- 4:03going to, I wonder if you agree, if you guys were any position on
- 4:06the field, I would lean online where you're doing a lot of The
- 4:09Dirty work and you're you guys can't move without you, but not
- 4:12getting all the praise. Why are there more reporters
- 4:14talking to pit crew? But you guys are doing The Dirty
- 4:16work. You're the athletes on the
- 4:17field, the track. Well, I think for a long time
- 4:20you didn't have this. You didn't have these type of
- 4:22pit crews. A lot of the pit crew guys were,
- 4:25yeah, there was mechanics. But now you start to see these
- 4:27big time athletes come in and pit crew.
- 4:29Now you're starting to more like you reported me.
- 4:31So each week you're starting to see more and more people like
- 4:34understanding about the pit crew.
- 4:36I just got all Draymond Green podcast last week and we was
- 4:38talking about the same thing. Yeah, actually a video just went
- 4:42viral with ESPN and Bleacher Report with me on it being a pit
- 4:45crew guy. So now that you're having all
- 4:47these athletes, you're starting to see more and more and we're
- 4:49starting to get a little praise. I don't think we'll ever have
- 4:51much praise as the drivers, but people are starting to
- 4:54understand who we are though. I'll be, I'll be on a mission.
- 4:57We are going to be interviewing pit crew every single week as of
- 4:59now, and you guys are the Facey ones on the track, like, OK, so
- 5:04does is there a difference with each driver you work with?
- 5:06Have you ever get nitty gritty with me?
- 5:07Are there some that are a little bit of a headache, some that are
- 5:10easier? Like, is there a certain guy
- 5:11that the whole pit crew is like, yeah, we want, we want a pit for
- 5:13him. I just think when you're
- 5:15assigned to a team, you're going to go to war with that guy.
- 5:17I don't think you look at it. I don't think you look at it any
- 5:20other. I don't want to pit with that
- 5:21guy. Hey, this this the guy who I'm a
- 5:22pit for, and you know I'm going to go to war, which you win,
- 5:24lose a draw. We had to fight.
- 5:26We had to fight to the green flag at the end.
- 5:28What if there was like a draft and then you can make trades?
- 5:31I mean, you you guys are with track house, but you're here
- 5:33with colleague this week. So is this a trade deal or you
- 5:37guys like how does it work? Can you can you like switch in
- 5:41and do a trade for a guy on another team that you want?
- 5:43Or what's the relationship with other pit crews?
- 5:45So once we assign for us being at track house, obviously track
- 5:48house is unemployed, but we contracted out with colleague.
- 5:51But once we sign to that deal, we with colleague for the rest
- 5:53of the year. So for this year we strictly
- 5:56with AJ. So AJ my guy, I'm going to war
- 5:59for me this year and me wanting to pit with anybody else, I'm a
- 6:02pleaded 5th on that. We almost got you there.
- 6:06Almost got him. Well, Marshall, thank you so, so
- 6:08much. This was very enlightening,
- 6:09exciting and the fun. Time is in the pits.
- 6:12I got a football and everything. I feel right at home with you
- 6:14guys.
