- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:34Think of a time when you came up
- 0:36short at work, when you just couldn't hack
- 0:39it.
- 0:41For me, I think of about a year
- 0:42ago at this time of year, January, February.
- 0:45It was a mission central work day, so
- 0:47a day where I kind of managed my
- 0:48own schedule, run my own projects.
- 0:51I didn't necessarily have a lot of meetings,
- 0:52and I woke up and I just couldn't
- 0:54get out of bed.
- 0:56This time of year is often really hard
- 0:57for me because I have what's called a
- 1:00SAD, S-A-D, Seasonal Affective Disorder, or
- 1:03seasonal depression.
- 1:06It's inconsistent.
- 1:07There are some days that are good, some
- 1:08days that are bad.
- 1:08I also have experienced other kinds of depression
- 1:10at other times of year, but this day
- 1:14about a year ago was really, really bad.
- 1:17Thankfully, Katie had a day off from work,
- 1:19and she saw that I was struggling, and
- 1:20she was like, you're going to come with
- 1:21me today.
- 1:22She had a list of errands she was
- 1:23going to do, and so she sort of
- 1:24just dragged me out to the car, and
- 1:25I went along with her to her errands,
- 1:27and that was good for me, and kind
- 1:29of moving rather than just staying in bed
- 1:31or whatever I might have been tempted to
- 1:32do.
- 1:33But I did not really get any work
- 1:35done for Mission Central that day, which is
- 1:37a really difficult thing for me even to
- 1:41publicly admit because I'm so committed to working
- 1:45hard, to doing the best that I can,
- 1:48because I care so much about work.
- 1:50I've got to put my money where my
- 1:51mouth is.
- 1:52If work is this dynamic, wonderful thing that
- 1:54God has designed that has been compromised by
- 1:56the fall but can be redeemed by Jesus,
- 1:57where we can still exercise love for God
- 1:59and neighbor and be part of his flourishing
- 2:02of life and culture and the world, then
- 2:04like, you got to do it, right?
- 2:07But that day, I just, I came up
- 2:10short.
- 2:10I couldn't hack it.
- 2:12And I'm really grateful that Katie was so
- 2:15compassionate and involved, and for anyone that knows
- 2:18her, that's no surprise.
- 2:20But what's a moment like that for you,
- 2:22where work just is too much for you
- 2:26in a given season or at a given
- 2:28moment on a given day?
- 2:30Like me, it might be because of a
- 2:33particular health challenge you face, mental health challenge.
- 2:35It could also be circumstantial.
- 2:37I think of one of my coworkers who
- 2:39just very unexpectedly lost her husband.
- 2:42She couldn't work for a few weeks after
- 2:44that, very understandably, through the disruption of grief
- 2:48or loss.
- 2:49Could be other things.
- 2:51Sometimes we just hit these limits in our
- 2:54lives.
- 2:54It's like we hit a wall and we
- 2:56can't just brute force our way through.
- 3:00The wall stops us.
- 3:01It turns out we're not an unstoppable force
- 3:04meeting an immovable object.
- 3:05We're very stoppable forces, sometimes meeting very immovable
- 3:09objects in our working lives.
- 3:11So what do we make of that as
- 3:14disciples of Jesus?
- 3:15I think if we turn to scripture, we'll
- 3:17find that we are not the first human
- 3:19beings to face limitations like this.
- 3:22And there's lots of different passages that talk
- 3:24about human limitation.
- 3:25I just want to turn to Psalm 103
- 3:28because it also speaks about God's response to
- 3:32our limitation.
- 3:33So starting in verse 13, this speaks about
- 3:35kind of God's posture towards us.
- 3:38As a father shows compassion to his children,
- 3:41so the Lord shows compassion to those who
- 3:43fear him.
- 3:44For he knows our frame.
- 3:46He remembers we are dust.
- 3:49As for man, his days are like the
- 3:51grass.
- 3:52He flourishes like a flower of the field.
- 3:54The wind passes over it and it is
- 3:56gone and its place knows it no more.
- 3:59But the steadfast love of the Lord is
- 4:02from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear
- 4:05him and his righteousness to children's children, to
- 4:10those who keep his covenant and remember to
- 4:13do his commandments.
- 4:16I love this portrait of God's character, that
- 4:21he's fatherly, that he's compassionate, that he's steadfast
- 4:25in his love over multiple generations.
- 4:29How can this vision of God help us
- 4:31when we come up short at work?
- 4:34I want to focus on that word compassion
- 4:36and particularly something that's kind of in the
- 4:38cultural zeitgeist right now, which is this phrase
- 4:41self-compassion.
- 4:42I don't think it's a bad phrase because
- 4:44it gets at that idea that we have
- 4:47agency in regards to our own selves, our
- 4:51own care for ourselves.
- 4:52It's related to the phrase self-care.
- 4:55And if you're like me, the first time
- 4:57you heard the phrase self-care, you thought
- 4:59like, whoa, is that just kind of like
- 5:01a therapeutic, self-indulgent, you know, psychological term
- 5:06that maybe doesn't capture the heart of the
- 5:09good news of Jesus because, you know, Jesus
- 5:10calls us to die to ourselves, right?
- 5:13So how could self-care be virtuous?
- 5:16This was something I actually really struggled with,
- 5:19but it was really helped by this statement
- 5:21from a Christian teacher, kind of an obscure
- 5:24deep cut.
- 5:25Her name is Leanne Payne.
- 5:26She actually attended my church when I was
- 5:28a child and wrote some books.
- 5:29But she said that self-acceptance is the
- 5:34mirror image of God's love for us.
- 5:37And to me, that was so helpful because
- 5:39it's like, oh, it's not actually about me.
- 5:42It's not about me being this exalted authority
- 5:45that says I will accept myself.
- 5:46It's actually receiving God's love for me that
- 5:51results in me accepting me.
- 5:54C.S. Lewis, similarly, in Mere Christianity, he
- 5:57talks about God's forgiveness and how if we
- 6:01refuse to forgive ourselves when God has forgiven
- 6:03us, it's like setting ourselves up as a
- 6:05higher tribunal or court than God himself, that
- 6:08if we actually receive God's forgiveness for us,
- 6:10there's a sense in which we have to
- 6:12forgive ourselves.
- 6:14So this is the piece that's maybe sometimes
- 6:17missing from the cultural zeitgeist, which focuses on
- 6:20forgiving yourself or caring for yourself or showing
- 6:23compassion for yourself, is the idea that there's
- 6:26actually a richer, deeper, stronger, more eternal, more
- 6:31lasting, more consistent source of forgiveness and care
- 6:36and compassion than simply our own wavering capacity
- 6:41to minister it to ourselves.
- 6:42It's the love of God.
- 6:44God loves us.
- 6:46God is in his very being full of
- 6:49love, full of compassion for anyone who's facing
- 6:53weakness.
- 6:55Now, that doesn't mean that we don't have
- 6:57agency.
- 6:57It's not like mutually exclusive circles that don't
- 7:02overlap at all.
- 7:03It's more like a Venn diagram, right?
- 7:05Where there's God's care for us, and inside
- 7:08of that, actually, it's maybe a fully overlapped
- 7:10Venn diagram, inside of that is our care
- 7:13for us, because God has given us agency.
- 7:16He doesn't just do everything for us.
- 7:18He wants us to be involved in what
- 7:20he's doing, including his care for us.
- 7:23And you see this in any good parent
- 7:25-child relationship.
- 7:25This is why the psalmist says, as a
- 7:27father shows compassion to his children.
- 7:30What is a lot of parenting?
- 7:32A lot of parenting is teaching kids how
- 7:34to take care of themselves.
- 7:35At first, they can't do that.
- 7:36At first, you got to change their diaper.
- 7:38You got to feed them.
- 7:40If they're crying, you got to figure it
- 7:41out.
- 7:42They can't figure it out.
- 7:43But a lot of parenting is, as they
- 7:44get older, it's like, oh, you can use
- 7:46your words to tell me what's bothering you,
- 7:49or you can learn to wipe your bottom
- 7:51for yourself in the bathroom.
- 7:52You can learn to maybe even occupy yourself
- 7:56rather than just simply turning to me whenever
- 7:58you get bored.
- 7:59That one's a real challenge sometimes.
- 8:01And so, even though the parent is caring
- 8:05for the child, the way the parent cares
- 8:07for the child is by helping the child
- 8:09grow up to care for themselves.
- 8:12This is very, very similar to what God
- 8:15does with us.
- 8:16God has compassion for us.
- 8:17God cares for us.
- 8:18But the way that God does that is
- 8:21by teaching us how to exercise our own
- 8:23personal agency so that we can take care
- 8:26of ourselves.
- 8:27Now, sometimes we're in a really low spot,
- 8:29like I was a year ago on that
- 8:31day.
- 8:31I just couldn't get up.
- 8:32I couldn't work.
- 8:33And we need somebody else to come in
- 8:34and care for us.
- 8:35For me, I had Katie, and I'm really
- 8:36grateful.
- 8:37And I hope you have friends or family
- 8:39members or others who can sort of be
- 8:41there to care for you when you can't
- 8:43muster the energy to care for yourself.
- 8:45But there's an invitation here from God in
- 8:49His compassion for us, that just like self
- 8:51-acceptance is the mirror of God's love for
- 8:54us, that self-compassion is the mirror of
- 8:58God's fatherly compassion for us.
- 9:01So what does that mean when we come
- 9:02up short at work?
- 9:04Well, it means rather than condemning ourselves or
- 9:07shaming ourselves for our limitations, we receive God's
- 9:11compassion for us, and in a sense, show
- 9:14compassion to ourselves for our limitations.
- 9:18When we come up against that wall, that
- 9:20immovable object that we just can't get through,
- 9:22we don't blame ourselves and say, this is
- 9:26my fault that I can't muscle through this,
- 9:28that I can't just push my way through.
- 9:31Instead, what does the passage say?
- 9:34He knows our frame.
- 9:35He remembers that we are dust.
- 9:38As for man, his days are like the
- 9:39grass.
- 9:40He flourishes like a flower of the field.
- 9:42The wind passes over it, and it is
- 9:44gone, and its place knows it no more.
- 9:46When you're coming up against that immovable wall,
- 9:48it's like, oh yeah, I'm dust, I'm grass.
- 9:52This happens sometimes.
- 9:55You know, rock, paper, scissors, dust, grass, wall,
- 9:58wall beats grass.
- 9:59It's just like, that's how it works.
- 10:01Sometimes you hit a limit, and it's okay.
- 10:05And so if you have a really hard
- 10:07time, like me, being okay with that, with
- 10:10when you hit your limit, not being able
- 10:12to power through, what can you do?
- 10:16A couple thoughts here.
- 10:17One is to use discernment on whether you
- 10:21should try and power through.
- 10:22So when the going gets tough, that's not
- 10:25usually our limit.
- 10:25Sometimes when the going gets tough, and it
- 10:27feels like we can't do anything more, that's
- 10:29when we can push through, right?
- 10:30Like you think about athletes, that final sprint,
- 10:32you give it all you've got, and there's
- 10:34something heroic about giving it all you've got
- 10:36when you feel like you can't.
- 10:38At the same time, sometimes we can run
- 10:41ourselves ragged that way.
- 10:43And so discernment is required.
- 10:44So here's a good question.
- 10:45This is kind of a question from St.
- 10:47Ignatius, which is, will going that final sprint,
- 10:52will pushing that extra mile, will trying to
- 10:56push once more against this immovable wall, will
- 10:59that draw me closer to love and hope
- 11:05and faith, or will it push me away
- 11:09from it?
- 11:10Because you may find when you're pushing up
- 11:12against the wall that it's not actually about
- 11:13loving God and loving neighbor anymore.
- 11:15It's about proving something about yourself.
- 11:18It's about being the kind of person who
- 11:20can do this.
- 11:22And there's a question there.
- 11:24Is it okay if you're the kind of
- 11:25person who can't do that?
- 11:27Isn't it true that God still loves you,
- 11:30even if you can't do that today?
- 11:34Isn't it true that you're still a human
- 11:35being created in God's image, adopted through faith
- 11:39in Jesus Christ into his eternal family?
- 11:42Isn't that still true on a day where
- 11:44you can't give it 100% or 110
- 11:46%?
- 11:48If that's hard for you to receive, that's
- 11:51an area to press into in prayer of,
- 11:54oh, huh, this is something where maybe I
- 11:58need to receive the compassion of the Lord.
- 12:00So use discernment by asking, is going that
- 12:03extra oomph, can I do that to love
- 12:07somebody?
- 12:08Or is that about proving something to myself
- 12:12that doesn't need to be proven?
- 12:14This is going to vary by situation.
- 12:16So for example, if you have a sick
- 12:17kid and you're also sick, and you're asking
- 12:20myself, should I continue to care for my
- 12:22sick kid?
- 12:22The answer is yes.
- 12:24That's that heroic moment where it's like, you
- 12:26feel like you're at your limit.
- 12:27You feel like you've got nothing to give.
- 12:29But to love this child who's been entrusted
- 12:31to your care, you have to.
- 12:33There's no question.
- 12:35But let's say you're tempted to stay an
- 12:38hour late at the office.
- 12:40And if you do, you might miss a
- 12:44family dinner, but you really want this project
- 12:46to work out okay.
- 12:48Could it be that your motive is how
- 12:49you want to be perceived by your coworkers
- 12:51and your boss?
- 12:52And it's not really about loving people and
- 12:54the balance of your responsibilities in life overall.
- 12:57So again, you can ask that question when
- 12:58you're hitting the wall, what is the invitation
- 13:01of love here?
- 13:02Is it more loving to accept that I
- 13:05have limits?
- 13:08Or is it more loving to press ahead?
- 13:13Another word here.
- 13:14So that's the first thing we can do
- 13:15is we can kind of ask, what's the
- 13:16invitation of love?
- 13:17Use discernment.
- 13:19Use that discernment.
- 13:20I mentioned St. Ignatius.
- 13:22I think the phrase that he uses there
- 13:24is consolation versus desolation.
- 13:27Consolation are those experiences, those movements in our
- 13:29heart that help us move towards faith and
- 13:32hope and love, whereas desolation are those things
- 13:34that move us away from faith and hope
- 13:36and love and life with God.
- 13:38So all of that, different words for the
- 13:41same thing.
- 13:41What's the invitation of love?
- 13:43What is consolation versus what is desolation?
- 13:46What does discernment say about this moment, whether
- 13:48to keep going or not?
- 13:51And then here's another thought.
- 13:52If there's a pattern to your limitations, like
- 13:54for me, there's a pattern with my seasonal
- 13:56depression.
- 13:57It happens in the winter.
- 13:59Plan for your limitations and be okay with
- 14:03following that plan.
- 14:04So I never used to be like this.
- 14:05It would be like a workday in January
- 14:07or in February, and I would just be
- 14:08so mad at myself that I wasn't getting
- 14:10through stuff fast enough.
- 14:11And after several years, I finally realized, you
- 14:13know, I could just plan that stuff is
- 14:16going to take me longer to do in
- 14:18January and February.
- 14:19So that's what I do now.
- 14:20Like when I'm looking ahead to January and
- 14:22February, I don't pack as much stuff in
- 14:23as I do in say like July or
- 14:25August.
- 14:25I'm just like, I know that there are
- 14:27going to be afternoons where getting through a
- 14:29normal simple checklist feels like wading through molasses.
- 14:32And so I just planned for that.
- 14:33And I'm okay planning for that.
- 14:34And I realized it's not the end of
- 14:36the world.
- 14:37Like I can actually like adjust my workload
- 14:39and still meet my job requirements and be
- 14:41a good worker, you know, at my day
- 14:43job and for Mission Central, even if I'm
- 14:44not quite as hyper productive as I can
- 14:47be on my best day ever in the
- 14:48summer.
- 14:50So can you make a plan around any
- 14:52patterns of your limitations, again, for how to
- 14:55show compassion to yourself, for how to let
- 14:58yourself off the hook for certain kinds of
- 15:01straining that would actually do damage to your
- 15:03body and your soul and not really be
- 15:05about loving God and neighbor anyways.
- 15:07So those are my two thoughts.
- 15:08Use discernment.
- 15:09What's consolation?
- 15:10What's desolation?
- 15:11What's the invitation of love?
- 15:12And if there's a pattern here, make a
- 15:14plan for self-compassion, for self-acceptance, for
- 15:18living within those limitations.
- 15:21Because God doesn't expect more than that of
- 15:23you.
- 15:24God remembers that you're dust, you're grass.
- 15:27It's okay.
- 15:29And he has compassion for you.
- 15:33Lord Jesus, help us to have courage to
- 15:36face difficult things.
- 15:37Give us wisdom about when to keep going
- 15:39and when to receive your compassion.
- 15:43You're letting us off the hook.
- 15:47Show us how to really be moved and
- 15:50motivated by love and not by trying to
- 15:53save ourselves or prove ourselves.
- 15:56Help us to receive how you already care
- 15:58for us.
- 16:00Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 16:01do our work with you.
- 16:33Amen.
