- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorite's the podcast. Listen. We've got a
- 0:20Speaker 1: real legend here in the studio today, Paul Laduka, how
- 0:26Speaker 1: are you doing, Paully and doing so well? Chad. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: don't know if you saw listen, Darren Revel maybe the
- 0:38Speaker 1: fastest man on the planet. There is now diet Coke
- 0:47Speaker 1: all over black Jack Fracture's microphone, and I would want
- 0:52Speaker 1: to say that diet Coke is not only have high
- 0:56Speaker 1: fruit corn syrup and has some other stuff in there
- 0:59Speaker 1: as well. A voting Paul, Welcome to the Favorite. This
- 1:07Speaker 1: is this is a new experience because for the first
- 1:09Speaker 1: time ever, me and Paul are in studio together, looking
- 1:13Speaker 1: each other in the eye as we do this. It's
- 1:22Speaker 1: been a journey for us, but we're here. Um. Also,
- 1:26Speaker 1: we have a special guest joining us right now, Dan Rubinstein,
- 1:30Speaker 1: collaborator at the Action Network, Man of the World in
- 1:33Speaker 1: the Borough of Brooklyn. He just got a haircut today,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so I hope you can hear that when it comes through. Danny,
- 1:38Speaker 1: how are you doing, buddy. I am feeling fresh, I
- 1:41Speaker 1: am feeling energized, and I am legitimately disappointed I'm not
- 1:45Speaker 1: in the studio with you. I am too Danny, I
- 1:47Speaker 1: am too. But the first thing I have to ask
- 1:49Speaker 1: you about, um. Chad Milman two point oh mentioned it
- 1:53Speaker 1: off the top of the show. Darren Raveled did a
- 1:55Speaker 1: video yesterday and I have to talk about it because
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's disturb herbed me to a great degree. Um. He
- 2:02Speaker 1: went to Nike's headquarters here in New York City and
- 2:05Speaker 1: ran a twenty yard dash in what was it four
- 2:08Speaker 1: point zero four seconds? Sold at an eight second forty
- 2:13Speaker 1: yard dash, Dan, I've never seen a human being time out.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He was not picking up speed, so it was not
- 2:20Speaker 1: going to be eight seconds. So great, that's the question. Okay,
- 2:22Speaker 1: So Paul, Paul thinks that that time maybe more like
- 2:24Speaker 1: what nine? Yes, he was down, he was slowing down. Um.
- 2:28Speaker 1: So uh, Danny, have you ever seen a human being
- 2:31Speaker 1: with a shorter stride than Darren without? When I watched
- 2:35Speaker 1: this and I'm this is this is where my mind
- 2:37Speaker 1: is that right now, if an alien came down to
- 2:40Speaker 1: Earth and went to the NFL combine and then went
- 2:43Speaker 1: back to his or her home planets, it's home planets,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and it took years, and the aliens back on the
- 2:50Speaker 1: home planet were like, what is it like? What what
- 2:52Speaker 1: do human beings look like when they run. The alien
- 2:55Speaker 1: trying to remember from years earlier what human beings look
- 3:00Speaker 1: like running is what I imagine Darren ravel is the
- 3:03Speaker 1: equivalent of he is an alien trying to replicate human
- 3:07Speaker 1: form unsuccessfully. I don't even know how to respond to that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Isn't the objects supposed to be your Your feet are
- 3:17Speaker 1: supposed to leave the ground. There's there. It's it's the
- 3:23Speaker 1: first time I've ever seen anybody power walk run. That's true.
- 3:32Speaker 1: If you told me, If you told me Darren has
- 3:35Speaker 1: is missing a hamstring and an achilles, it would make
- 3:39Speaker 1: more sense. Okay, he's down two pretty major muscle group. Well,
- 3:43Speaker 1: we broke it down a little bit because Paul went
- 3:45Speaker 1: over this thing like the pruter arms swings compared to
- 3:50Speaker 1: legs swings. What do you think the ratio was even?
- 3:53Speaker 1: You think there's so much more action happening than there
- 3:58Speaker 1: is force moving for word, it almost doesn't make sense
- 4:01Speaker 1: from a physiological stamps. So he'd be almost a Louis
- 4:04Speaker 1: Tian of running the twenty. Yes, that's correct. Okay, now
- 4:10Speaker 1: that I'm I'm rewatching it. You know how people you
- 4:13Speaker 1: know how like agoraphobic people who like don't want to
- 4:16Speaker 1: leave the house ever, and are they can. Sometimes their
- 4:20Speaker 1: clothing can get stuck to their chair or their bed
- 4:23Speaker 1: because they're on there so long, the fibers sort of connect, Darren.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Looks like what would happen if somebody's house were to
- 4:30Speaker 1: go up in flames and they had to detach themselves
- 4:34Speaker 1: from their own chair without having used any of their
- 4:37Speaker 1: muscle fibers in literal years, and they had to run
- 4:40Speaker 1: for their lives. I am so glad we had Danny
- 4:42Speaker 1: on today Be's. I didn't even have to really baron
- 4:45Speaker 1: Barry Ravel. He's done it for me. Um. It's remarkable,
- 4:49Speaker 1: all right, Danny, So thank you for helping us breakdown
- 4:52Speaker 1: that video. But one of the reasons I wanted to
- 4:55Speaker 1: have you on Today's because you are the star of
- 4:58Speaker 1: a new podcast from the people over at Wondering and
- 5:01Speaker 1: the brilliant minute Blue Duck Media uh called Sports Wars uh.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And for those of you haven't listened to it, you've
- 5:07Speaker 1: got what four episodes out now right correct, and they
- 5:11Speaker 1: are spectacular. Uh. And basically this first series is um
- 5:16Speaker 1: on Bread FARV and Aaron Rodgers and kind of their
- 5:19Speaker 1: relationship and rivalry and green day. Right, This is correct. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: four episodes are out and it's I mean, I have
- 5:27Speaker 1: nothing to do with it beyond hosting it and editing
- 5:29Speaker 1: some of the script stuff, but the production value is
- 5:32Speaker 1: it's pretty great. It drops you back into the nineties
- 5:35Speaker 1: and the mid two thousand's, as you know Aaron Rodgers
- 5:38Speaker 1: is waiting and waiting and waiting to start, and how
- 5:41Speaker 1: Brett Farve and Aaron Rodgers actually have kind of similar backgrounds,
- 5:44Speaker 1: which I assume makes the frustration even larger on Aaron
- 5:49Speaker 1: Rodgers part as he waits. And you know, it's hard
- 5:52Speaker 1: for the two of them, because they're so a part
- 5:55Speaker 1: in age to really relate to each other. And you
- 5:57Speaker 1: can only get one quarterback on the field old and
- 6:00Speaker 1: you have this icon and this guy that everybody wants
- 6:03Speaker 1: to to get onto the field. So there's all sorts
- 6:05Speaker 1: of natural tension that plays out sort of slowly, which
- 6:09Speaker 1: is kind of crazy in sports with everything moving so quickly.
- 6:12Speaker 1: You're talking about years and years of just this building
- 6:15Speaker 1: and building element to their relationship. And so that's what
- 6:18Speaker 1: we try to drop into, and it's really easy to
- 6:21Speaker 1: forget a lot of what happened between them, and then
- 6:23Speaker 1: the timeline of everything so hopefully we did a pretty
- 6:26Speaker 1: good job of bringing you back to that point. You know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: when you Danny, when you do these things, do you
- 6:31Speaker 1: realize or I guess I'm putting it the wrong way
- 6:34Speaker 1: to do some of these things surprise you or does
- 6:37Speaker 1: it like sort of put you somewhat in the locker
- 6:40Speaker 1: room a little bit? It does. And we talked to
- 6:44Speaker 1: Jeff Perlman, who wrote like the authoritative Brett Farve book,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and he was really uh hammering home the point that
- 6:52Speaker 1: it's not necessarily that Brett Farve and Aaron Rodgers hated
- 6:56Speaker 1: each other. It's basically Aaron Rodgers is drafted and he's
- 6:59Speaker 1: what one twenty two red far of his thirty five,
- 7:02Speaker 1: thirty six and as far as getting older, and he's getting,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you know, to be about forty and Rodgers is twenty
- 7:08Speaker 1: four twenty five, Like how many forty year olds are
- 7:11Speaker 1: truly like relating to twenty five year olds, you know,
- 7:14Speaker 1: far of as kids, and he's married and Rogers is
- 7:17Speaker 1: sort of like a brainy loner type. And I mean, Paul,
- 7:21Speaker 1: you've been in locker rooms. It's not that everybody needs
- 7:23Speaker 1: to be best friends. It's it's not even that you
- 7:26Speaker 1: need to relate to each other, just that you sort
- 7:27Speaker 1: of need to get along. But the two of them
- 7:29Speaker 1: playing the same position, you know, Aaron Rodgers is getting
- 7:32Speaker 1: just sort of he's getting antsy, and that sort of
- 7:36Speaker 1: that that adds to the tension, the fact that they're
- 7:38Speaker 1: just they're from different eras they see the game a
- 7:41Speaker 1: little bit differently. And you have this weird thing where
- 7:45Speaker 1: all of a sudden, having fifty people in a locker room,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you have some guys saying, yeah, the far of thing is,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, it was great in the nineties and early
- 7:53Speaker 1: two thousand's, but like we're kind of do for a reboot.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And then you have the far of loyalists who are
- 7:57Speaker 1: saying to themselves like, I don't know, this guy never
- 8:00Speaker 1: had a losing season, Like how much can we criticize
- 8:03Speaker 1: this guy? Why are we trying to force this guy out?
- 8:05Speaker 1: And then that's when things start to like form into faction.
- 8:08Speaker 1: So that to me is fascinating that you have all
- 8:10Speaker 1: of these different these different minds because football is such
- 8:13Speaker 1: a you know, a large sport roster wise, I think
- 8:16Speaker 1: that was pretty fascinating. Yeah, Danny, and I gotta say
- 8:19Speaker 1: you do a great job of really kind of bringing
- 8:22Speaker 1: the you can you can feel the tension when when
- 8:26Speaker 1: you listen to the podcast, Like in the first episode
- 8:28Speaker 1: you talk about Rogers sliding in the draft, and obviously
- 8:30Speaker 1: I know he goes twenty four to Green Bay, But
- 8:32Speaker 1: when you're talking about you know, the Buccaneers around the
- 8:35Speaker 1: clock at five and there's teams at eleven and fourteen,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, maybe he's gonna go now, maybe his
- 8:39Speaker 1: phone's gonna ring, even though I know it's not going to.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So you've done a great job with that. But let
- 8:44Speaker 1: me ask you this question. You've you've obviously been doing
- 8:46Speaker 1: this show now and you've been talking a lot about it,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and you've you've looked a lot into this relationship. Do
- 8:51Speaker 1: you find yourself leaning to become more of a Rogers
- 8:55Speaker 1: guy and like hating your family or you're more of
- 8:58Speaker 1: a five guy and you're just sending picks out. I
- 9:01Speaker 1: think I'm a natural Rodgers who wants to be a Farve.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's what I think. I will hold grudges. I will um.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I watch a lot of Jeopardy, which I think Rogers
- 9:13Speaker 1: does the ton of he was I think he won
- 9:15Speaker 1: Celebrity Jeopardy UM. So I'm probably closer to Rogers um
- 9:20Speaker 1: without any of the natural athletic talent. Um. But there
- 9:24Speaker 1: is something about the way Farv lives just he wants
- 9:27Speaker 1: to just hang out in Mississippi. He wants to ride
- 9:29Speaker 1: as a TV around, he wants to go hunting and fishing. Um.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Does he want to send out inappropriate pictures of his genitals? Yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 1: he'll do that. You know, that's what you get when
- 9:39Speaker 1: you sign up for the first of lifestyle, the gun slinger,
- 9:44Speaker 1: the the literal gun slinger. Um. And so I would
- 9:48Speaker 1: love to be a Farve type, but unfortunately I think
- 9:50Speaker 1: there's just too much Rodgers d n A in May.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So no Tommy Copper for you. No Tommy Copper. Um.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I do keep my beard a little stubbling. UM, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: don't on any Wrangler games. But now over himself, I'm
- 10:07Speaker 1: so sorry. UM. When I was actually more sympathetic than
- 10:11Speaker 1: I would have thought when I was when I first
- 10:12Speaker 1: started this project. That's what I wanted to ask you,
- 10:15Speaker 1: because what what I try to relate to people in
- 10:18Speaker 1: sports is listen when when you were trying what you
- 10:21Speaker 1: were just saying to me when I was the catcher
- 10:23Speaker 1: with the Dodgers, and I got traded in two thousand four.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I was completely upset, but I ended up realizing the
- 10:28Speaker 1: guy that behind me was David Ross, and then behind
- 10:30Speaker 1: David Ross was Russell Martin, so they weren't gonna pay me.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So when you're on the same team, it's almost like
- 10:39Speaker 1: you're trying to learn from far Yet Rogers. You listen,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you're a competitor. You don't want Brett to do good,
- 10:45Speaker 1: so you know I can get in the games. So
- 10:47Speaker 1: that kind of aspect did that, like, I mean, obviously
- 10:51Speaker 1: that's got to be part of this is a huge
- 10:53Speaker 1: part of this, and that's a huge part of anything
- 10:55Speaker 1: in sports, Like you have to root for that person
- 10:57Speaker 1: because it's a team concept, but you're you're not rooting
- 11:01Speaker 1: for that person. Did you feel like that happened between
- 11:03Speaker 1: far In Rogers, Oh, definitely there There was definitely an
- 11:07Speaker 1: element of Rogers feeling opportunistic if Farv was struggling like
- 11:12Speaker 1: he did early on when Rodgers was there, where it
- 11:14Speaker 1: was like, Okay, maybe it's time to move on. Maybe
- 11:16Speaker 1: like the message is clear and like we're not. I
- 11:19Speaker 1: don't know how old you were when you were traded,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but this at this point, Farve is like thirty seven,
- 11:22Speaker 1: thirty eight, you know, the time that Rogers takes over.
- 11:25Speaker 1: So you know, there's definitely an element of especially you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: ten fifteen years ago, when you don't have quarterbacks playing
- 11:31Speaker 1: at that high level like we have now with Tom
- 11:33Speaker 1: Brady um that it's it's sort of clear that like
- 11:37Speaker 1: Rogers is seeing the opportunity because guys ahead of him,
- 11:40Speaker 1: I mean far ahead of him, was not playing all
- 11:42Speaker 1: that well. I don't think Rogers ever wished injury on
- 11:45Speaker 1: far but the fact is when Rogers arrived, Packers doing well,
- 11:49Speaker 1: they want a bunch of NFC North titles. Again, they
- 11:52Speaker 1: didn't have a losing record. I think they won eight
- 11:53Speaker 1: in but aside from that, it was always a winning
- 11:56Speaker 1: record with far of starting and much to what you're
- 11:59Speaker 1: talking about with having David Ross and Russell Martin behind you.
- 12:02Speaker 1: By the way, what a catcher room. It's pretty good.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Another guy in there, if anybody remember his name, Horonimogil.
- 12:09Speaker 1: He actually uh, he actually caught for the Orioles for
- 12:12Speaker 1: a little bit, but that was all Mike Sosha. He
- 12:15Speaker 1: made two of us catchers, he Russell and I catcher.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That was the worst decision the Dodgers ever did they
- 12:21Speaker 1: let him go and let they laid all of them
- 12:22Speaker 1: go to the Angel staff and they let you go.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Thank you, Um, Danny. Last question I've got for you
- 12:28Speaker 1: about the podcast, um, which new episodes by the way,
- 12:31Speaker 1: come out every Wednesday and Friday, so make sure you
- 12:33Speaker 1: subscribe download It's a wonderful podcast. Um. The last question
- 12:39Speaker 1: I have is do you find it somewhat ironic knowing
- 12:43Speaker 1: this story that at this point in his career Aaron
- 12:46Speaker 1: Rodgers kind of turned in Brett Farve a little bit? No, Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 1: they're they're definite elements of that Matt Bleacher Reports story
- 12:53Speaker 1: came out a few weeks ago, and some of it
- 12:54Speaker 1: was anonymously sourced. Some guys put their name on it,
- 12:56Speaker 1: which I always do appreciate. Greg Jennings gave gave some
- 12:59Speaker 1: interesting quote, UM, but yeah, a lot of it. I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 1: you look back at like the Super Bowl that Brett
- 13:04Speaker 1: Farve had and he was changing plays at the line
- 13:06Speaker 1: even though his coach was like, just play conservatively early on,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and he ripped off huge place and Rogers is doing
- 13:11Speaker 1: similar things to that. And you know, as Farv got
- 13:14Speaker 1: older and it became more difficult for him to relate
- 13:16Speaker 1: to players, He like went off into his own corner
- 13:18Speaker 1: of the locker room, had his own chef, and you know,
- 13:21Speaker 1: there are stories about Rogers sort of having his guys,
- 13:24Speaker 1: and if you sort of cross him, or if you're
- 13:25Speaker 1: not fully on board, or if you know, like there
- 13:28Speaker 1: were players that were showing loyalty to Brett Farve when
- 13:30Speaker 1: they played against each other, far Are Rogers completely cut
- 13:33Speaker 1: them out of all communication. And I think it's just
- 13:36Speaker 1: sort of there's part of it that it's a it's
- 13:38Speaker 1: a natural evolution of guys that as they get older
- 13:41Speaker 1: and as they're crazy successful athletes, like they just become
- 13:45Speaker 1: so single mindedly focused and don't have time to just
- 13:49Speaker 1: be a friend to everybody. And I get that from
- 13:51Speaker 1: both Farv and Roger's perspective um and even on the field,
- 13:55Speaker 1: Rogers started off as sort of this by the book,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you know, going through his progressions, going with the playbook
- 14:00Speaker 1: told him to do. And now you watch him and
- 14:02Speaker 1: he's just like in the huddle, changing everything, telling an
- 14:05Speaker 1: offensive lineman to roll out with him this way even
- 14:07Speaker 1: though that's not in the game plan, and still just
- 14:09Speaker 1: executing incredible plays. So yeah, there's definite overlap, but I
- 14:13Speaker 1: think that sort of speaks to how successful each of
- 14:15Speaker 1: them have been. Right alright, So once again, the podcast
- 14:19Speaker 1: is Sports Wars by Wondering Blue Duck Media. Go download it, subscribe.
- 14:24Speaker 1: It's a great show. You will not be disappointed. You're
- 14:27Speaker 1: gonna love it. They've got other great stories in sports
- 14:29Speaker 1: coming up, including Michael Jordan and Isaiah Thomas, Roger Federer,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and Rafael Nadal. Lots of great rivalries coming, Russell Martin,
- 14:37Speaker 1: Paul Laduca. That one's coming to that one, Actually, I
- 14:43Speaker 1: think it's I think it's Mike Piazza and Paul Laduca.
- 14:45Speaker 1: There's a lot of heat there. God, I got a
- 14:48Speaker 1: way better mustached in him. Sure do. Alright, So, Danny,
- 14:52Speaker 1: this is normally where I'd let you go, but I'm
- 14:53Speaker 1: not gonna let you go just yet. Did put it
- 14:56Speaker 1: in there? Oh my man? Um, san Antonio just brought
- 15:01Speaker 1: me another diet coke with vodka and thank you, and
- 15:03Speaker 1: he poured it in by himself. Thank you. What a gentleman, Um, Danny.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'd normally let you go here, but I'm not. We're
- 15:09Speaker 1: gonna talk to NFL Draft and I want to keep
- 15:11Speaker 1: you on. So obviously the first round of the draft
- 15:13Speaker 1: is tonight, Kyler Murray is widely expected to be the
- 15:15Speaker 1: number one overall pick to the Arizona Cardinals. Do you
- 15:18Speaker 1: think there's any chance that doesn't happen? Yeah, I mean
- 15:22Speaker 1: I think there's a chance. You know, a team like
- 15:24Speaker 1: the Raiders could swoop in. They have a ton of
- 15:27Speaker 1: draft capital and they're looking to sort of have a
- 15:29Speaker 1: new face. Derek Carrs looks to be not the guy
- 15:32Speaker 1: in Oakland slash Vegas. So I could see a team
- 15:35Speaker 1: like that swooping in and still taking Kyler number one.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And you know, Arizona has a ton of needs, and
- 15:41Speaker 1: so if they were able to get you know, dropped
- 15:43Speaker 1: down in the first, get a second and a third
- 15:44Speaker 1: or something like that, I think it's it's possible. But
- 15:47Speaker 1: in terms of what I think the favorite is, because
- 15:50Speaker 1: come on, this is the name of the show, I
- 15:52Speaker 1: still think it's Kyler going to Arizona number one. Okay,
- 15:56Speaker 1: Dwayne Haskins. I mean we've gone from this guy a
- 15:59Speaker 1: going to be the second quarterback Pigs he might be
- 16:02Speaker 1: in the second round. What is going on? Why is
- 16:04Speaker 1: he so topsy turvy right now? I think it's sort
- 16:07Speaker 1: of you know, as the draft is, you know, imminent
- 16:10Speaker 1: in the hours, in the days leading up to it.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I think it's just sort of smoke screening. I think
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'd be shocked if Dwayne Haskins either didn't go to
- 16:18Speaker 1: a team in the top ten or didn't see a
- 16:19Speaker 1: team trade into the top ten to grab him. Team
- 16:21Speaker 1: like Washington. He is the clear one or two. I mean,
- 16:25Speaker 1: if you couldn't make the case for him his one,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'd be fine with that, just because physically he is
- 16:29Speaker 1: in a better place than Kyler Murray, who is what
- 16:31Speaker 1: five ten and still pretty skinny. Jayne Haskins, his ceiling
- 16:35Speaker 1: is special. And the other two quarterbacks that are rumored
- 16:38Speaker 1: to go in the top ten fifteen twenty, Daniel Jones
- 16:41Speaker 1: and Drew lock There are there are a lot of
- 16:43Speaker 1: good qualities to them, but I wouldn't include special in
- 16:46Speaker 1: any of them. They didn't beat good teams, they didn't
- 16:48Speaker 1: rise to the occasion at big moments. They were decent
- 16:50Speaker 1: quarterbacks for decent teams. And I'm not gonna put it
- 16:54Speaker 1: past the NFL. Who, let's see, was seven eight years
- 16:57Speaker 1: ago taking Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, and Blame Gabbert in
- 16:59Speaker 1: the first round when every college fan looked at those
- 17:02Speaker 1: three and said, but why, but why? And I could
- 17:07Speaker 1: I could see feeling like yeah, yeah, I could see
- 17:10Speaker 1: feeling like that about Lockin and Jones. So, Danny, what's
- 17:14Speaker 1: the biggest surprise you might think happening you might see
- 17:16Speaker 1: happening in the first round. I think you could see
- 17:20Speaker 1: just a crazy run on defensive lineman and ed rushers early,
- 17:23Speaker 1: just because there's so many big names and all of
- 17:26Speaker 1: a sudden if if you know, Quinn and Williams goes
- 17:28Speaker 1: off the board one, two, three, whatever, at Oliver goes
- 17:31Speaker 1: off real quickly. I could see some bigger names going
- 17:34Speaker 1: off a little bit sooner, you know, the Dexter Lawrence
- 17:36Speaker 1: types going off, Jeffrey Simmons going off pretty quickly, even
- 17:39Speaker 1: with the torn A c l um and I think
- 17:41Speaker 1: it's going to be a shocker to a lot of people.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But at this point I am in the camp with
- 17:47Speaker 1: everybody else that just let running backs fall, and I
- 17:50Speaker 1: think it's going to be a shock to people that
- 17:52Speaker 1: Josh Jacobs might be the only running back taken in
- 17:55Speaker 1: the top fifties, sixties, seventy picks. Wow, all right, Danny,
- 17:59Speaker 1: thanks lot for joining us today. I really appreciate it.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Again podcast Sports Wars go downloaded. UM, love you and
- 18:05Speaker 1: enjoy your new haircut. Thank you, love you. Two pleasures
- 18:08Speaker 1: all mine, Thanks, thanks, thank you. All right, PAULI, so
- 18:12Speaker 1: we've talked a little bit of NFL Draft. I think
- 18:14Speaker 1: we've beat that thing into the ground as much as
- 18:16Speaker 1: we can. Um, let's talk a little NBA playoffs because
- 18:20Speaker 1: a couple of nights ago we saw the Portland Trailblazers
- 18:23Speaker 1: close out the Oklahoma City Thunder. Damian Lillard put on
- 18:27Speaker 1: an all time performance, dropped fifty on the Thunder. They
- 18:32Speaker 1: were down twelve with a few minutes left to play.
- 18:34Speaker 1: They come back, they tie the game. Lillard hits a
- 18:38Speaker 1: step back three from about thirty feet with Paul George
- 18:41Speaker 1: on him, and then wades goodbye to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 18:45Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on the Blazers, the Thunder and
- 18:47Speaker 1: how that that series shook out? Well, I mean, it
- 18:50Speaker 1: finally played out in Portland. It used to be a
- 18:53Speaker 1: tough place to play in Portland, and it seemed like
- 18:55Speaker 1: that had sort of gone away. But Damian Lillard, he
- 18:58Speaker 1: took it upon him himself. He took Wessell uh Russell
- 19:02Speaker 1: Westbrook upon himself to make sure that he was going
- 19:05Speaker 1: to be the focus. And you're right. I mean to
- 19:09Speaker 1: hit shot after shot and basically a forty five ft
- 19:11Speaker 1: or over Paul George's head um and drained it, waved
- 19:14Speaker 1: bye bye, and then stared at the camera when he
- 19:16Speaker 1: was on the bottom of a pile. So he knew
- 19:18Speaker 1: exactly where everybody was at and he was gonna let
- 19:20Speaker 1: everybody know. And he wants to let everybody know that
- 19:22Speaker 1: I went to a um a school called Weber State
- 19:26Speaker 1: that plays inn Au. Beloved little cousin goes Um which
- 19:31Speaker 1: is up north, and never got any run in in
- 19:35Speaker 1: any love in college. And he seems like he's never
- 19:37Speaker 1: gotten much love in Portland. And he played in another city,
- 19:40Speaker 1: he'd he probably top two or three point cards in
- 19:43Speaker 1: the league and he just doesn't get it. And man,
- 19:46Speaker 1: but he shows up in big games. And I'll tell
- 19:48Speaker 1: you what. Those last couple of games that he played,
- 19:51Speaker 1: he put Russell Westbrook in his place. Put him he did.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Put in his back pocket, he did. So the Blazers
- 19:59Speaker 1: move on. They will get the winner of this Nugget
- 20:01Speaker 1: Spurs series, which we've got game six tonight in San Antonio.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you, Paul, I got no read
- 20:06Speaker 1: on this. The Nuggets for the first game and three
- 20:09Speaker 1: quarters of the second game stunk, and then they somehow
- 20:14Speaker 1: managed to come back and win Game two off of
- 20:17Speaker 1: Jamal Murray just going off in the fourth quarter. And
- 20:20Speaker 1: then these seems have been kind of trading back and forth.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Game six in San Antonio, they're catching three. I leaned
- 20:25Speaker 1: to the Spurs in that spot, but I mean, you've
- 20:28Speaker 1: got anything on This series is a tough one now.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I was looking at it right now. That's in totals
- 20:32Speaker 1: two or seven and a half in San Antonio is
- 20:34Speaker 1: minus three. And it seems like the public it is
- 20:38Speaker 1: on San Antonio. I mean, I guess it's the playlist
- 20:40Speaker 1: and it's a do or die at home. Yeah, And
- 20:42Speaker 1: it's a do or die situation when you're down, um,
- 20:45Speaker 1: two games to three, and it seems like Pop, it
- 20:47Speaker 1: seems like the coaches have played out. I know, we'll
- 20:49Speaker 1: get to the game last night with the Clippers and
- 20:52Speaker 1: what job Doc Rivers has done. But when you get
- 20:54Speaker 1: to the playoffs, the coaches do play out. So hopefully
- 20:57Speaker 1: Pop will will draw something up. And it's a short number,
- 21:00Speaker 1: it's a scary number. They want you to play San Antonio.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I'll tell you that all right. So you just mentioned
- 21:05Speaker 1: last night, picked you up at the airport. We sat
- 21:08Speaker 1: up to set up together and watched the Clippers and Warriors.
- 21:13Speaker 1: The Clippers win for the second time in this series,
- 21:16Speaker 1: for the second time in Oakland. It's now a three
- 21:19Speaker 1: two series going back to l A. Do the Clippers
- 21:22Speaker 1: have any realistic chance of I'm not even talking winning
- 21:26Speaker 1: this series of forcing a game seven. Really yeah, we're not.
- 21:30Speaker 1: They They've won both games in Oracle, which nobody thought.
- 21:34Speaker 1: They haven't won at home. Lou Williams said it last night.
- 21:36Speaker 1: We got to protect the house, which isn't even your
- 21:38Speaker 1: house because the Lakers on it. Thanks for clearing up.
- 21:43Speaker 1: It's just being honest with you. The Lakers could be
- 21:45Speaker 1: five in seventy seven, and it's going to be the
- 21:48Speaker 1: Lakers house. It's just the bottom line. It's like it's
- 21:50Speaker 1: like in New York, the Yankees clues a hundred games,
- 21:53Speaker 1: the metsican win a hunter games, it's still going to
- 21:54Speaker 1: be Yankee towns. We know how Mets fans are, but
- 21:59Speaker 1: that's true. Listen covered that last week. We don't need
- 22:02Speaker 1: to do it again. A lot of Irish bars out
- 22:03Speaker 1: in Long Island. All right, uh uh, what are we
- 22:10Speaker 1: talking about? The Clippers and the Warriors. So basically they
- 22:15Speaker 1: beat him with pick They steph Curry, Clay Thompson, Kevin
- 22:24Speaker 1: Durant got beat by Montres Harrold and Lou Williams on
- 22:26Speaker 1: the pick and roll the last two minutes of the game.
- 22:28Speaker 1: That's who won the game. Lou Williams won the game
- 22:32Speaker 1: and they pick and rolled him to death. They got
- 22:34Speaker 1: the big lead, and then Golden State got uh got
- 22:40Speaker 1: the lead back late and then Lou Williams decided to
- 22:42Speaker 1: take the game over with an elbow jumper to put
- 22:44Speaker 1: him up one. And then it was a nice pass
- 22:46Speaker 1: to Harold for for a dunk, and then Harold had
- 22:49Speaker 1: a giant block on a layup. He was He was
- 22:55Speaker 1: giant last night and he's been great Soul series. And
- 22:58Speaker 1: Doc that's what I love about Doc Rivers when things
- 23:00Speaker 1: are working. He left him on the floor. He comes
- 23:03Speaker 1: off the bench and and it was those two guys
- 23:05Speaker 1: were picking and rolling and they were scoring at will
- 23:07Speaker 1: and every punch that sort of Golden State through at them.
- 23:10Speaker 1: They came back and like I told you last night,
- 23:13Speaker 1: name another team in the West it's gonna win two
- 23:15Speaker 1: games against Golden State, regardless whether the Clippers lose this
- 23:18Speaker 1: series in the next game. Winning two games, Nobody thought
- 23:21Speaker 1: that was gonna happen, regardless of whether Golden State had bodecausins. No,
- 23:25Speaker 1: And I think that Patrick Beverley could not shoot. My daughter.
- 23:28Speaker 1: He could play some defense, but he can't hit. Every
- 23:31Speaker 1: time you see Patrick Beverley shooting a wide open three,
- 23:33Speaker 1: it's ill advised. There's a reason he's wide open. Um
- 23:37Speaker 1: never never, I mean, listen, I agree with you. I
- 23:40Speaker 1: don't think the Spurs or the Nuggets present a real
- 23:43Speaker 1: challenge to the Warriors to win two games. Portlands might
- 23:46Speaker 1: get too. I mean maybe, um, if everything breaks right,
- 23:49Speaker 1: But the Clippers are doing a hell of a job now.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I just I just think that Golden State has these
- 23:54Speaker 1: lapses where they'll lose these games and then so often
- 23:58Speaker 1: the next game they bounced back in their their focus,
- 24:00Speaker 1: they're ready to get it. And that's just they're on
- 24:03Speaker 1: the road. Now it's game six. I feel like I
- 24:05Speaker 1: feel like Golden State comes out and just just takes
- 24:08Speaker 1: the Clippers to the wood shed. Why I get it.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I mean, like Steve Kerr's uh speeches that he has.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Hey guys, um, this would be a good time to
- 24:18Speaker 1: turn up, would be a good time to maybe turn
- 24:20Speaker 1: up to defense and uh, when we get the rebound,
- 24:23Speaker 1: maybe we'll get it on transition and give it to
- 24:25Speaker 1: like the seven best shooters we have in the league
- 24:27Speaker 1: and maybe one of those will hit a three. Yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 1: we were watching the game last night. They do the
- 24:32Speaker 1: inside the huddle thing on T n T and it
- 24:34Speaker 1: was just I thoting for somebody to put on his
- 24:39Speaker 1: speech was was just in a straight monotone, like, hey, guys,
- 24:42Speaker 1: this would be a good time to like turn it
- 24:43Speaker 1: up right now. Um, but you know what I mean?
- 24:46Speaker 1: What is that? Do they need to hear it? Don't matter?
- 24:48Speaker 1: Does it matter whose coaching because he's got the vape
- 24:51Speaker 1: pen on the side't matter. It's California, it's legal, alright.
- 24:55Speaker 1: So that's the Western Conference. Let's touch on the East
- 24:58Speaker 1: a little bit. The matchups there set. We've got Philadelphia
- 25:01Speaker 1: and Toronto and Boston and Milwaukee. Okay, let's start with
- 25:05Speaker 1: the Celtics. Celtics sweep the Pacers. They look really good
- 25:09Speaker 1: doing it. Honestly, the best they've looked all season. Yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: without the Oladipos. Any chance they beat the Bucks, I'm
- 25:17Speaker 1: gonna say no, there's obviously a chance. You've got Brad Stevens.
- 25:21Speaker 1: They played good defense, but the Bucks are rolling. Yeah,
- 25:24Speaker 1: but the Bucks played the Pistons, who realist? Okay, so
- 25:26Speaker 1: now you're gonna carre the Pistons to compare the Pistons
- 25:29Speaker 1: to the Pacers without Oladipo. Yeah, the Pacers. I mean,
- 25:32Speaker 1: the Pacers are way better than the Pistons. Yeah, Pistons stink.
- 25:37Speaker 1: But here's my own party. Can't walk one day and
- 25:41Speaker 1: then the next day about the Sixers. Yet, I thought
- 25:45Speaker 1: you said you were talking about the Sixers Celtics, Bucks
- 25:48Speaker 1: the Celtic. I already told you the Bucks are gonna win.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That's over. Go to the next series. Okay, moving on,
- 25:53Speaker 1: Sixers Raptors, go ahead, Joel and beat. He couldn't walk
- 25:57Speaker 1: one series and he comes out and he's in Durant
- 26:00Speaker 1: the next game. Alright, So Sixers Raptors, what do you
- 26:03Speaker 1: What do you have there? What do you like? I
- 26:04Speaker 1: know you're in love with Kawhi Leandard. You literally want
- 26:06Speaker 1: to propose to Khi Lanard? No you do, No, I
- 26:09Speaker 1: don't propound pronounce your love for kwais leanderd Now, look,
- 26:12Speaker 1: I think he's probably like the third best player in
- 26:15Speaker 1: the NBA. But okay, who's the other's Lebron and Durant?
- 26:19Speaker 1: Don't say Durant Mosquito bites, son of a bitch? Wow? Alright,
- 26:25Speaker 1: um your words. Um, I think he's probably like the
- 26:28Speaker 1: third best player in the NBA. But and I like
- 26:30Speaker 1: Toronto a lot, I do. I think they're deep, They've
- 26:32Speaker 1: got a great bench, But I still like the Sixers.
- 26:36Speaker 1: If Ebad is playing every game, If and beads not
- 26:38Speaker 1: playing every game, this is this is a waste of time,
- 26:40Speaker 1: Like he has to be on the floor. This this
- 26:43Speaker 1: nonsense of him sitting two games out of five out
- 26:46Speaker 1: it has to end, Like the guy's got to be
- 26:48Speaker 1: on the floor because otherwise Toronto is just too deep.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But I think this series probably has seven games written
- 26:54Speaker 1: all over it, and you're still sticking with the Sixers
- 26:57Speaker 1: winning the East. I think the Sixers win the whole
- 26:59Speaker 1: God damn, think, oh my god, you need clinical hell.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I think that is the best starting five in basketball
- 27:06Speaker 1: with J J J. Yeah, JJ Reddick should scare you.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Why shouldn't he break it down? Okay, Ben Simmons very
- 27:15Speaker 1: good point guard. Terrible shooter, but he's a good point
- 27:18Speaker 1: great part guard. Could not hit a shot left handed
- 27:21Speaker 1: or right. I don't even know does he shoot with
- 27:24Speaker 1: both hands? He shooting free throw? A Rick Berry haven't
- 27:27Speaker 1: watched something compared to the Warriors, right, Draymond Green isn't
- 27:30Speaker 1: a good shooter? Who's starting at the five for them? Now?
- 27:33Speaker 1: Andrew Bogett? What is he? Forty two off the Australian League?
- 27:38Speaker 1: He can't shoot either. The Warriors have two guys that
- 27:41Speaker 1: can't shoot. Who I just told you, Boget Green? Yeah,
- 27:46Speaker 1: they also got two guys are the best shooters in
- 27:48Speaker 1: the league. Okay, Tobias Harris is wildly underrated over Gay
- 27:54Speaker 1: Butler Jimmy but has had four points in Game one.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Joel and Beatles. Stretch them out, Yeah, I like the Sixers.
- 28:03Speaker 1: The only thing joint be stretching out out of those
- 28:05Speaker 1: freaking careful, be careful. I thought that was going somewhere
- 28:10Speaker 1: else alright, So stout Achilles. That was NBA talk. Let's
- 28:15Speaker 1: move on to the Stanley Cup playoffs because that's been
- 28:17Speaker 1: a wild That was really fun having the under with
- 28:20Speaker 1: the Vegas Nights. Paul Paul. Listen, listen, Let's just let's
- 28:24Speaker 1: just let's just give the eulogy for the Vegas Nights
- 28:27Speaker 1: right now. Great season, great season. They were up three
- 28:33Speaker 1: one in that series. They lose Game five on the road.
- 28:35Speaker 1: They lose Game six at home, where Martin Jones for
- 28:39Speaker 1: the Sharks made fifty nine saves. Game seven happens there,
- 28:43Speaker 1: up three nothing in the third period, a bad penalty
- 28:46Speaker 1: call by the referee to get a five minute major
- 28:48Speaker 1: on Cody Egan. It's a bad call. It shouldn't happen.
- 28:51Speaker 1: The referee didn't see the play. He just said it
- 28:54Speaker 1: looked bad. You can't give a major interjective player on that.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Having said that, and everyone knows is my love for
- 29:00Speaker 1: the Golden Knights, you can't give up four goals in
- 29:03Speaker 1: five minutes like what. That is a total and complete breakdown.
- 29:08Speaker 1: To give up four goals in five minutes, I don't
- 29:11Speaker 1: care that you're shorthanded. They killed back to back penalties
- 29:15Speaker 1: in the first period and barely gave up a shot.
- 29:19Speaker 1: They gave up four goals in five minutes, still managed
- 29:22Speaker 1: to force overtime another one um and then lose the
- 29:26Speaker 1: game in overtime. Vegas deserve to lose that game the
- 29:28Speaker 1: way they played. UM still a terrible call, but you
- 29:32Speaker 1: made a great point this morning when we were talking.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Every division winner has been eliminated in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 29:38Speaker 1: We have no division winners left after the first round.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Absolutely insane. Um our own Lauren Joffe tweeted out, since
- 29:47Speaker 1: she went to the bathroom, they're up three nothing. She went,
- 29:49Speaker 1: came out there down in for three like it was insane,
- 29:51Speaker 1: And I was literally in the span of a few
- 29:53Speaker 1: minutes it really was, because I had played the game
- 29:56Speaker 1: under six and I came back act and then it
- 30:01Speaker 1: was fourth. I could not believe you're going into the
- 30:03Speaker 1: third period to nothing, and here's golden. I didn't even
- 30:05Speaker 1: call you, and I even told you last night. I
- 30:07Speaker 1: was like, I'm gonna let this one sit on black
- 30:09Speaker 1: Check's mind for a couple days. You're in a bad place. See,
- 30:13Speaker 1: I'll get a friend. I am. You're the best. See.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I waited a couple of days before I consoled and
- 30:18Speaker 1: you to say that the Black Knights suck the Golden Knights.
- 30:21Speaker 1: It's not Army. Oh sorry, d Army did cover buried
- 30:24Speaker 1: Houston And listen, I'm gonna say this I think San
- 30:26Speaker 1: Jose wins the Western Conference. At this point, I thought
- 30:30Speaker 1: whoever won that game was going to win the Western Conference.
- 30:33Speaker 1: San Jose is the best team left in the West.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I'm not a buyer on the on the Stars. I'm
- 30:38Speaker 1: certainly not buying the Avalanche. St. Louis tough, but San
- 30:43Speaker 1: Jose to me is the best team left in the West.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Let me ask you a quick question, please, you'd like
- 30:48Speaker 1: to own a ticket on the New York Islanders. Woudn't you? Yeah?
- 30:50Speaker 1: Kind of would, kind of would because I listen, the
- 30:53Speaker 1: capitals are gone, the light that you're gone, the maple
- 30:57Speaker 1: leafs are gone. The Islanders are getting Are they like
- 31:01Speaker 1: second or third choice to win this now? I mean
- 31:03Speaker 1: they've got to be. I haven't seen the updated odds
- 31:05Speaker 1: this morning, but the Islanders. The Islanders now will only
- 31:08Speaker 1: have to go on the road to Boston should they
- 31:11Speaker 1: play them in the conference finals. Boston's getting Columbus. The
- 31:14Speaker 1: Islanders are getting Carolina, which is a great matchup for them.
- 31:19Speaker 1: The Islanders defense is the best in hockey bar none.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I I think the path is really there for them.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It's awesome. We think John Tavaris is doing right now.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Um counting his money in Toronto. I don't know. I mean, listen, better, listen.
- 31:35Speaker 1: He should be bitter. I mean, he should be piste off.
- 31:37Speaker 1: You left this team presumably because you didn't think they
- 31:40Speaker 1: were really going to do anything. Last year he was there,
- 31:43Speaker 1: They stunk. They hire Barry Trots, and now all of
- 31:46Speaker 1: a sudden they go from the worst defensive hockey to
- 31:48Speaker 1: the best defense in hockey. He's eliminated and there in
- 31:51Speaker 1: the second round. I mean, you know, sometimes it happens.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I don't know. Some other people in New York should
- 31:56Speaker 1: realize that trade a superstar to get a good team.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Heads and Mets should have treaded David right about five
- 32:02Speaker 1: years ago. He's a good friend of yours, and listen,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and I said it five years ago, and they've treaded
- 32:08Speaker 1: backwards since. Sometimes you gotta let go thanks. Sometimes sometimes
- 32:14Speaker 1: the plays over black jack, alright, Paul Lduca cutting bait
- 32:19Speaker 1: um All right? So it talks to me, Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 32:22Speaker 1: What do you have now in the finals? What do
- 32:24Speaker 1: you think? Where are you putting your money on a
- 32:26Speaker 1: future ticket? If I had a future ticket right now,
- 32:29Speaker 1: right now, I'd probably go Columbus. Are you out of
- 32:32Speaker 1: your fucking mind. They're playing Boston, They're gonna get what exactly.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And I hate everybody from Boston. So I'm rooting in
- 32:38Speaker 1: for Columbus. People in Boston are gonna really start to dislike.
- 32:43Speaker 1: The problem is is like everybody in New York City
- 32:45Speaker 1: is a Bruin fan. It's crazy they the Island fan
- 32:47Speaker 1: or a Bruin fan, like, oh Bruins, this Bruin that
- 32:49Speaker 1: everybody knows a Bruin fan. I'm tired of everybody raising
- 32:54Speaker 1: up a banner in Boston. Okay, I mean, all right,
- 32:57Speaker 1: fair enough, the Columbus Clippers haven't raised up a band
- 33:00Speaker 1: banner in a long time. Okay, there's nothing in Columbus.
- 33:04Speaker 1: You ever been to Columbus? No. I can get a
- 33:06Speaker 1: good Hamburger. That's about it. Let me tell something. I
- 33:08Speaker 1: have no interest in going to Ohio Ohio Steaks, and
- 33:11Speaker 1: I'll tell you you're wrong. Ciota Downs maybe one of
- 33:15Speaker 1: the best O t B s you'll ever go. You're
- 33:17Speaker 1: giving this advice on O t B. Listen. This is like, listen,
- 33:20Speaker 1: you want to learn how to bet horses or go gamma,
- 33:22Speaker 1: go to Siota Downs. I don't need to go to
- 33:24Speaker 1: Sioda down to in Ohio, Columbus, to go to an
- 33:27Speaker 1: O t B to bet on horses. I could go
- 33:29Speaker 1: to the race palace in Sayas and hang out with
- 33:31Speaker 1: Mike Frances you know what next next, that's true, and
- 33:35Speaker 1: you can you can watch my gift free tickets out
- 33:37Speaker 1: to the waitresses here. Well you should do is in
- 33:44Speaker 1: in Columbus, Ohio. I mean, I'm telling you it is legit.
- 33:47Speaker 1: O t B. Legit or you can go to like
- 33:50Speaker 1: Thistle Downs or I think it's funny how I have
- 33:54Speaker 1: a burgeoning feud with Ohio. You've got one with Boston.
- 33:56Speaker 1: We're gonna we're just turning, turning the cities off. I
- 33:59Speaker 1: don't have a left and right. Here's a problem. I
- 34:01Speaker 1: don't have a feud with Boston because Boston fans and
- 34:03Speaker 1: met fans get along, because what do we haven't the
- 34:05Speaker 1: Yankees exactly right. It's the enemy of my enemy is
- 34:09Speaker 1: my friend. Whatever you said, I thought that that might
- 34:13Speaker 1: put you in a prethel. Alright, So I went to
- 34:16Speaker 1: Arizona State. You only need a heartbeat, okay, In the
- 34:20Speaker 1: words of in the words of our own Matt Mitchell.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Arizona State is one of the top twelve schools in
- 34:24Speaker 1: the PAC twelve, so it is. It was, but but
- 34:26Speaker 1: when I went there, we were the PAC ten. So
- 34:27Speaker 1: he needs to do research. You know what, You're right,
- 34:30Speaker 1: do your research. Well, actually, to be honest, you know,
- 34:32Speaker 1: let's go this way. We were the six pack Oregon.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Oregon State didn't even have teams. Okay, all right, that's
- 34:38Speaker 1: enough history with Paul Duca. Let's move on to everyone's
- 34:41Speaker 1: favorite time of the week, storytime. What Pauli, what do
- 34:45Speaker 1: you mean? No, the Derby's coming up. We got another
- 34:49Speaker 1: show next week. What we do every week? I didn't
- 34:54Speaker 1: know we were signed on to this for another week.
- 34:56Speaker 1: We're signed on to this indefinitely. Gosh, why did I
- 35:01Speaker 1: come back to New York. Let's go to storytime with
- 35:05Speaker 1: Paul LaDuke. Pauli has a gem today that will take
- 35:10Speaker 1: us back to his youth and a twelve year old
- 35:13Speaker 1: Paul laduc A being thrown in race track jail. Pauli
- 35:18Speaker 1: always started with another true story. Um, he used to
- 35:22Speaker 1: go to the racetrack. Obviously, this is my reason why
- 35:25Speaker 1: the love I have for the races and been covering
- 35:27Speaker 1: him for the last seven years, actually been blessed to
- 35:29Speaker 1: be covering for the last seven years. Um. So I'm
- 35:32Speaker 1: twelve years old um at the time, and my father
- 35:37Speaker 1: owned a restaurant called the NFL Sports Pub. Um. And
- 35:40Speaker 1: what my father used to do is what you see
- 35:43Speaker 1: on Bar Rescue is is what he used to do.
- 35:46Speaker 1: He used to like fix restaurants and stuff like that.
- 35:48Speaker 1: So one of the best was he fixing restaurants or
- 35:51Speaker 1: families as John Tafford does both. Oh he does. Yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 1: He was also Safe Island, Puerto Rico. You have to
- 35:59Speaker 1: be part psychi just because most of the time, if
- 36:02Speaker 1: families like we were a family business, family businesses are
- 36:05Speaker 1: hard to run together. And this is an Arizona, Arizona,
- 36:08Speaker 1: so we're about two miles away from Turf Paradise. And
- 36:12Speaker 1: my dad was an old school, very lenient person. So
- 36:15Speaker 1: he would let guys run tabs at bars. So a
- 36:18Speaker 1: guy sat at the end of the bar named Tom
- 36:20Speaker 1: that he was there all the time and he would
- 36:23Speaker 1: pay his tab and then there was a jockey and
- 36:28Speaker 1: his tab kick getting up there up there, up there,
- 36:30Speaker 1: and my dad would let it run for like a month.
- 36:31Speaker 1: And after about a month and a half he had
- 36:34Speaker 1: told him, like listen, man, you gotta like pay me something.
- 36:36Speaker 1: On this tab, or give me a horse, give me something.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I can give me a tip when you know what's
- 36:41Speaker 1: going on. So the guy goes, all right, man, I
- 36:45Speaker 1: got one for you. Uh, we're gonna plug him in.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Um My day goes well, he goes, but we gotta
- 36:52Speaker 1: work the horse first and see if the buzzer will work.
- 36:55Speaker 1: So I'm like a little bit of twelve um hearing
- 37:00Speaker 1: about this because I used to hang about the bar
- 37:02Speaker 1: because it mus be a pac Man machine and a
- 37:03Speaker 1: Donkey Kong machine right by the bar. So I always
- 37:06Speaker 1: used to hear, hearstay here, now, which one where you
- 37:08Speaker 1: better at? Um? Pac Man? I think I end up
- 37:13Speaker 1: finding out all the patterns. I'm pac Man. Of course
- 37:16Speaker 1: he did. Yeah, I know, yeah, fucking rain Man. I didn't.
- 37:19Speaker 1: I didn't go to school. Um. So, now about two
- 37:24Speaker 1: days later he comes back to the bar and tells
- 37:26Speaker 1: my dad we're good to go. I'll never forget a
- 37:28Speaker 1: name of the horse. Hard. Name of the horse is
- 37:29Speaker 1: Sweeter Day. Um. So my dad cuts me out of class.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I love you, mom um, and we go on the racetrack.
- 37:40Speaker 1: He's got two thousand dollars in his pocket. The horse
- 37:42Speaker 1: is fifteen and one on the morning line, and he's
- 37:46Speaker 1: like having just the worst ulcers. He's he's, he's had
- 37:49Speaker 1: he he used to eat before. Tag him it before
- 37:53Speaker 1: used to be a prescription. Now you can get it
- 37:56Speaker 1: or vice first. I forget it, he said, chun him
- 37:58Speaker 1: by the dozen, and he's thrown up, thrown up at
- 38:02Speaker 1: the restaurant, and I'm my dad. It's like, we gotta
- 38:05Speaker 1: get to the racetrack. So we get to the racetrack.
- 38:07Speaker 1: You can barely walk up the stairs. So he's going
- 38:10Speaker 1: into the bathroom upstairs and he's just keeled over the toilet. Well,
- 38:16Speaker 1: now it's like twelve minutes, ten minutes to post. And
- 38:20Speaker 1: back in those days, um, they had security cards on unlock,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and there used to be a red line that was
- 38:29Speaker 1: from the bedding window, Yeah, from the betting window, and
- 38:32Speaker 1: you could not approach the betting window. Now yeah, now
- 38:36Speaker 1: they let you go up there with like your daughter whatever,
- 38:38Speaker 1: they let you bet. They don't care anymore. There's no
- 38:40Speaker 1: security guards, there's none of that. So it's now seven minutes,
- 38:46Speaker 1: six minutes, five minutes. My dad's not coming out of
- 38:48Speaker 1: the bathroom, and I'm just looking up looking out in
- 38:50Speaker 1: the horse like twelve thirteen one so I just run
- 38:53Speaker 1: in the bathroom and my dad, I just give me
- 38:55Speaker 1: the like, I'm not giving you the money, give me
- 38:57Speaker 1: the money. So now I go get them. I get them.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I get two thousand. So now I'm trying to look
- 39:02Speaker 1: for somebody over eighteen. It looks trustworthy that will put
- 39:05Speaker 1: the bet down for me. So you're twelve years old
- 39:07Speaker 1: with two thousand dollars in your handcache yes, and you're
- 39:10Speaker 1: looking to bet a horse. I'm trying to find somebody
- 39:12Speaker 1: over eighteen the bet doors and it's just like very
- 39:15Speaker 1: crowded day, like on a Saturday. Um. This when race
- 39:18Speaker 1: tracks were really full, especially to Paradise, and I just
- 39:22Speaker 1: like I was like trying to find somebody. I remember
- 39:24Speaker 1: asking a guy and the guy looked at me like
- 39:26Speaker 1: a little crazy. I'm like, um, and then he was like,
- 39:29Speaker 1: do you have the two thousand? I was like this,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and I'm like I can't give this guy two thousand.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I don't know if he's gonna give me the ticket back,
- 39:36Speaker 1: this and that. So they start loading the horses in
- 39:39Speaker 1: and it's like one through seven, and you know when
- 39:41Speaker 1: you watch so many races, you know, and then bell
- 39:43Speaker 1: is about to go off. So the eleven, horse goes in.
- 39:45Speaker 1: So I just ran up to the window and I go,
- 39:47Speaker 1: give me two thousand and went on seven and the
- 39:50Speaker 1: lady punched ticket and she goes, wait a second, you're
- 39:53Speaker 1: way too young. And then when she went to like
- 39:54Speaker 1: put the thing back in, it went off. The bell
- 39:57Speaker 1: went off. So now let's take it. Five ticket had
- 40:00Speaker 1: popped out of the auto to machine, so for her
- 40:03Speaker 1: to cancel it, she's got to put it back in,
- 40:05Speaker 1: hit all these buttons to cancel. But as soon as
- 40:08Speaker 1: the bell goes off, I can't do it. Katie by
- 40:10Speaker 1: the door, okay, So where was the ticket? When she
- 40:15Speaker 1: when the ticket pops out of the machine, what'd you do?
- 40:17Speaker 1: I took it and put in my pocket. And then
- 40:18Speaker 1: what happened? I got handcuffed by whom race track security.
- 40:23Speaker 1: You're not You're not getting handcuffed by a cop. Race
- 40:26Speaker 1: track security. They have handed So tell us what happens
- 40:28Speaker 1: after you get handcuffed. Well, my father's ulcer went completely
- 40:30Speaker 1: away when the horse won by seven. Um, Now I'm
- 40:34Speaker 1: holding a twenty three thousand ticket in my pocket, and
- 40:38Speaker 1: I can hear my dad come running out going where's
- 40:40Speaker 1: the ticket? Where's the ticket? And I'm like, gets in
- 40:42Speaker 1: my left pocket and he grabs it out of my
- 40:44Speaker 1: left pocket. Now he's holding the ticket. And now did
- 40:50Speaker 1: they take you somewhere when they handcuffed you? WHOA whatever
- 40:53Speaker 1: you wanna call race track jail is down there at
- 40:55Speaker 1: Turf Paradise. I went down to this thing and it's
- 40:58Speaker 1: just like the secure urity guard. Um, this other guy
- 41:02Speaker 1: and the teller. Now this poor lady's responsible for because
- 41:07Speaker 1: it's on her till. Because you gotta understand, a lot
- 41:09Speaker 1: of tellers gamble. They punched their own tickets and sometimes
- 41:14Speaker 1: they can be short, you know, if they don't get
- 41:16Speaker 1: tipped or whatever. Um, So my dad's basically saying, you
- 41:20Speaker 1: got to give me twenty four thousand, like I had
- 41:23Speaker 1: to take all the hair. He's holding the ticket, which
- 41:25Speaker 1: in two thousand nineteen wouldn't happen this, we would not
- 41:27Speaker 1: be He gave my father the money. Um, and I'll
- 41:33Speaker 1: never forget. We walked outside and my dad waited for
- 41:39Speaker 1: like two hours. My mom must have called I don't
- 41:43Speaker 1: know how many times, forty times, and we're lying because
- 41:46Speaker 1: we're not at the track and school day. I think
- 41:51Speaker 1: my I think my dad might have dropped like Paul
- 41:53Speaker 1: had extracurricular activities. I had to like go like hits
- 41:57Speaker 1: the mixture golf ball. I was playing on the golf
- 42:00Speaker 1: team of time and uh he uh waited and gave
- 42:06Speaker 1: the woman six dots. She lost her job. She came
- 42:08Speaker 1: out of Turf Paradise crying, and my dad said, I'm like,
- 42:12Speaker 1: it was by chance that you punt. You punched that ticket.
- 42:16Speaker 1: I can't believe they gave us the twenty four thousand
- 42:18Speaker 1: and he gave her six thousand, and I remember she
- 42:20Speaker 1: got She cried, she goes, this is more all ever
- 42:22Speaker 1: make punch of tickets here, Thank you so much. So
- 42:24Speaker 1: she was happy Senor Laduca doing the right thing then.
- 42:27Speaker 1: But my picture was on the wall and I was
- 42:29Speaker 1: banned for Turf Paradise from twelve to I was like eighteen.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And then you abandoned the car there one time. Yeah,
- 42:34Speaker 1: it's in a diph somewhere there there, alright. So that's
- 42:37Speaker 1: Paul getting arrested in Surf of Paradise. Really kind of
- 42:40Speaker 1: lays the groundwork for a lot, doesn't it. Yeah, you
- 42:45Speaker 1: just put a lot of things into perspective. Thanks a lot,
- 42:47Speaker 1: like Jack Buddy, all right, it feels like it's good
- 42:50Speaker 1: a time May In this thank you for listening to
