2:26
Speaker 5: our good friend Monck the newspaper, Steven Allen Adams.
2:29
Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave, good to be here.
2:32
Speaker 5: Thank you for being our saw on the socials that
2:34
Speaker 5: you and the lovely Jessica were at the big reveal party.
2:37
Speaker 5: I think last night over at rock City and Dancing
2:39
Speaker 5: with the Stars look like a good time.
2:41
Speaker 7: It was a good time, very crowded space. We were
2:45
Speaker 7: there to support a couple people that we know that
2:49
Speaker 7: are in the contestants whatever you call that, like, what
2:55
Speaker 7: do you call that? Like the dancers, let's just say
2:57
Speaker 7: the dancers. So we knew if you testants the contestants.
3:01
Speaker 2: Yeah.
3:02
Speaker 7: Yeah, obviously I don't dance. I don't dance in a
3:04
Speaker 7: non game shows, so I don't know the technical terms.
3:06
Speaker 7: But but yeah, it was a good time, great event,
3:10
Speaker 7: and of course it was giving Tuesday. I know people
3:14
Speaker 7: that pay to get in there. The proceeds are splewed
3:16
Speaker 7: up between all the dancers and of course the contestants
3:18
Speaker 7: all raise money over this time period meet certain goals, uh,
3:23
Speaker 7: and they get money from friends and family and organizations
3:27
Speaker 7: and businesses, deals and.
3:28
Speaker 5: Again Market's going to join us to talk about that
3:30
Speaker 5: a little bit later on. It's become one of those
3:32
Speaker 5: big events. But you know in Charleston that everybody if
3:35
Speaker 5: they're not if they're not taking part in it, they're
3:38
Speaker 5: there or they're supporting their favorite couple and the reveal
3:40
Speaker 5: party to sell last night. As to who's going to
3:42
Speaker 5: be doing that, it's not to Market.
3:43
Speaker 7: O'Neil is one of the most important organizations. One of
3:46
Speaker 7: the most important organizations certainly in the state. Of course,
3:50
Speaker 7: there's multiple different United Ways across the state. They operate
3:52
Speaker 7: two on one. They were pivotal during the snap crisis
3:56
Speaker 7: and helping two direct resources. So they need all the
3:58
Speaker 7: help we can.
3:59
Speaker 5: Get the It seems to me, Steven, just an opinion
4:02
Speaker 5: here that we have spent way too much time, energy,
4:07
Speaker 5: and effort of the last couple of years talking about
4:08
Speaker 5: vaccinations in West Virginia, Okay, And what I mean by
4:12
Speaker 5: that is is that it just I mean, and look,
4:14
Speaker 5: it's prickly, well it is, but it's you know, I'm
4:20
Speaker 5: a person that always thinks, hey, look we can always
4:23
Speaker 5: look at things. We don't have to say, well, this
4:24
Speaker 5: is the way we've always done it. We can always
4:26
Speaker 5: you know, keep a constant eye on things. But it
4:28
Speaker 5: just seems to me, as you and I I'm you know,
4:31
Speaker 5: a little bit older than you, but it just seems
4:33
Speaker 5: to me that there was not a lot of talk
4:35
Speaker 5: about vaccinations and all of a sudden it comes up
4:37
Speaker 5: again and it's been you know, West Virginia's made national
4:40
Speaker 5: news on a couple of fronts, one because of the
4:45
Speaker 5: success rate that we've had with Keith over the years
4:48
Speaker 5: keeping down childhood illnesses. And it just seems to me,
4:52
Speaker 5: and look, they may have a reason for that. I've
4:54
Speaker 5: interviewed a lot of the folks on the show that
4:56
Speaker 5: want to scale some of these back. I understand that,
5:00
Speaker 5: but it just seems to me like now we're kind
5:02
Speaker 5: of reversing a lot of those. And there was a
5:04
Speaker 5: decision yesterday and you write about it, Brad and everybody
5:07
Speaker 5: else wrote about it to what happened yesterday Raleigh County.
5:10
Speaker 7: Oh yeah, well really what happened here in charge of Charlee?
5:13
Speaker 5: So yeah, our.
5:14
Speaker 7: West Virginia Supreme Court issued a stay of Raley County
5:19
Speaker 7: Judge Frobul's decision from last week, which granted a full,
5:24
Speaker 7: permanent injunction against the State Board of Education County Board
5:28
Speaker 7: of Education in Rawley County from blocking them from accepting
5:34
Speaker 7: religious vaccine exceptions have been granted by the State Department
5:37
Speaker 7: of Health per Governor Morrissey's executive order from last January.
5:41
Speaker 7: It's a pretty big deal. It seems like you can't
5:47
Speaker 7: really predict a lot of times how the Supreme Court's
5:49
Speaker 7: going to go depending on a stay, but you can
5:53
Speaker 7: infer some things. And the fact that they're issuing a
5:55
Speaker 7: stay at this point, which I think there's been motions
5:59
Speaker 7: for stays before, right, but I think in this case
6:03
Speaker 7: it finally they said yes to a stay because I
6:06
Speaker 7: think they had all the information they were going to
6:08
Speaker 7: have now that there's a full written order out from
6:10
Speaker 7: Judge Trobell. The other interesting thing about this also is
6:14
Speaker 7: he had Judge Trouble had put together a class action
6:17
Speaker 7: which roped in all of the more than five hundred
6:20
Speaker 7: and seventy religious vaccine exemptions granted across the state, unless
6:23
Speaker 7: those cases are like situations that are already before another
6:26
Speaker 7: sert of court judge that was roped into his order.
6:30
Speaker 7: But this stay from the Supreme Court basically means that
6:34
Speaker 7: all those five hundred and seventy religious exceptions school systems
6:38
Speaker 7: don't have to accept them until ultimately this is adjudicated
6:42
Speaker 7: and decided by the Supreme Court, probably sometime in the
6:45
Speaker 7: middle of next year.
6:46
Speaker 5: And if you want to read the actual state it's
6:48
Speaker 5: length and Brad's story at the Website's the lead story
6:50
Speaker 5: this morning at wv Metronews dot com state to school
6:54
Speaker 5: board President Paul Hardesty, who's been at the center of
6:57
Speaker 5: a lot of this. And you know Paul Paul, he
7:01
Speaker 5: never never backs down for any names. He says what's
7:03
Speaker 5: on his mind. He is is quoted in this because
7:06
Speaker 5: but I think he was a little happy with this because, Okay,
7:10
Speaker 5: now we're getting somewhere to getting it's settled. Is that
7:12
Speaker 5: is that a fair assertion?
7:13
Speaker 7: I think so this has been a long ways coming
7:15
Speaker 7: because I mean the first lawsuit which was filed by
7:18
Speaker 7: a Raley County parent, there was some other parents down
7:20
Speaker 7: there that joined her lawsuit initially. That's back in June.
7:24
Speaker 7: We had a preliminary junction issued in July by Judge Frobell,
7:28
Speaker 7: which is the first thing that was appealed to the
7:30
Speaker 7: Western Chin Supreme Court. And then we didn't even get
7:34
Speaker 7: like the cases in regards the hearings rather in regards
7:38
Speaker 7: to the permanent injunction until September October, and then we
7:43
Speaker 7: just got Judge Frobel's rolling last week, the day before Thanksgiving.
7:47
Speaker 7: So this has been a long time coming. And there's
7:50
Speaker 7: been confusion with your schools about whether you accept a
7:53
Speaker 7: religious exception, whether you don't accept a religious exception, if
7:57
Speaker 7: you follow the governor's executive order, what do you call
8:00
Speaker 7: follow the state Departments of Educations directive to not accept
8:04
Speaker 7: these exemptions. I mean, there's just been confusion. So at
8:07
Speaker 7: least this is definitive stating that these exemptions don't have
8:12
Speaker 7: to be accepted by a school system, and then we'll
8:15
Speaker 7: have to just figure out what the final ruling is
8:17
Speaker 7: by the Supreme Court. I'm assuming there'll be oral arguments
8:20
Speaker 7: at some point scheduled and all that, but all that's
8:23
Speaker 7: probably going to be until next year.
8:24
Speaker 5: Okay, that's going to be next year. And here we are.
8:26
Speaker 5: We started this battle, you know, some time ago, as
8:30
Speaker 5: you noted. Here we are, you know, on December the third,
8:33
Speaker 5: and still I mean, we're making progress, I guess, but
8:38
Speaker 5: we're still in a holding pattern of this thing.
8:40
Speaker 7: Well, I do think a lot. You know, there's some
8:42
Speaker 7: initial deadline set in the preliminary injunction appeal by the
8:46
Speaker 7: State Supreme Court, and I think they all had to
8:48
Speaker 7: have all their documents and everything submitted by I think
8:51
Speaker 7: at some point in February. And why that far ahead, Well,
8:55
Speaker 7: I have a theory on that. And the theory is
8:57
Speaker 7: I do think that everybody, Supreme Court, the governor, school systems,
9:02
Speaker 7: I think they all want the legislature to take another
9:05
Speaker 7: crack at this one way or the other. It's state
9:07
Speaker 7: definitively whether religious vaccine exemption should be put in the
9:11
Speaker 7: compulsory vaccine law or not. Now the legislature said no.
9:15
Speaker 7: Last year, state said said yes. House of Delegates after
9:19
Speaker 7: a long debate and a lot of thought said no,
9:23
Speaker 7: there's pressure to get them to do this again this
9:26
Speaker 7: legislative session, and they might very well do it. I mean,
9:29
Speaker 7: the governor and supporters of religious vaccine exemptions are right
9:33
Speaker 7: to say forty five other states have some former religious exemption.
9:38
Speaker 7: So maybe the legislature tries to follow the lead of
9:42
Speaker 7: one of those states that allows for that, but also
9:45
Speaker 7: have some guardrails put into it, and they do something
9:47
Speaker 7: like that. I don't know, but I think people want
9:50
Speaker 7: the legislature to just settle this and be done with it.
9:55
Speaker 5: Talking again with Stephen Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers, of
9:57
Speaker 5: course we're now switching gears for a little bit. See
10:00
Speaker 5: we're less than a week away a week passed from
10:03
Speaker 5: the death of GUARD specialist Beckstrom, and of course staff
10:06
Speaker 5: started angel Wolf continues to fight for his life. Hopy
10:09
Speaker 5: wrote in his commentary about the role of the GUARD
10:11
Speaker 5: in DC in the first place, and it was interesting
10:14
Speaker 5: to me that the State Democratic Party we had delegate
10:18
Speaker 5: and state Party Chair Mike Pushkin, as well as Republican
10:21
Speaker 5: Party Chair Josh Holsteing, both on Metro News Midday yesterday.
10:25
Speaker 5: But it seemed to me going back to the Democrats
10:27
Speaker 5: for a moment that it's just odd that the State
10:29
Speaker 5: Democratic Party chose to repost Hoppy's commentary. I didn't see
10:34
Speaker 5: that coming. Your take on this whole.
10:36
Speaker 7: Thing though, Yeah, of course, you know. I was at
10:39
Speaker 7: the press conference Monday with the Governor and General Seward
10:42
Speaker 7: of the National Guard. First press conference. I should point out,
10:45
Speaker 7: since this whole thing started the last Wednesday, I mean,
10:49
Speaker 7: there had been no press conferences with West Virginia press
10:51
Speaker 7: or spent a lot of press releases, including wrong information
10:55
Speaker 7: in press releases. There's been video messages, there have been
10:58
Speaker 7: social media posts, and we've seen the governor and others
11:01
Speaker 7: go to national cable news, but we've not had the
11:06
Speaker 7: ability to ask questions. And I asked specifically questions about
11:12
Speaker 7: the emphasis on the volunteer part list because again, the
11:15
Speaker 7: one hundred and seventy people Guards members that are in
11:18
Speaker 7: d C Firm and West Virginian National Guard are volunteers.
11:22
Speaker 7: But they're volunteers because they were authorized to be there
11:25
Speaker 7: as volunteers by Governor Morrissey. And one of the things
11:28
Speaker 7: I wanted to make sure of, and Hobby brings us
11:30
Speaker 7: up in his column is talking about you know, taking responsibility.
11:34
Speaker 7: I want to make sure governor said explicitly he did that,
11:37
Speaker 7: and the Governor's credit he did. But in regards to
11:40
Speaker 7: what they were doing in DC, there's a good question
11:43
Speaker 7: about what it is. I mean, the Governor's office really
11:46
Speaker 7: didn't like Pushkin in his statements stating that they were
11:49
Speaker 7: doing beautification or that sort of thing. Though the Pushkin's defense,
11:53
Speaker 7: he's trying to find out what they were doing. So
11:56
Speaker 7: if our National Guard weren't doing landscaping and mulching, you know,
12:00
Speaker 7: on them all, and that's wonderful, but what were they doing.
12:03
Speaker 7: The only thing we've heard really described as these roving
12:06
Speaker 7: presence patrols is what they've described them as. What does
12:09
Speaker 7: that mean? And we don't really know well, And.
12:12
Speaker 5: Again it goes back to the fundamental differences steven as.
12:17
Speaker 5: Everybody sees things in different ways. And we had a
12:19
Speaker 5: text of the show yesterday from somebody who has family.
12:23
Speaker 5: I think the textas said it was their daughter or
12:25
Speaker 5: and I may be wrong about that, but said that
12:27
Speaker 5: they live in d C. And and that a lot
12:29
Speaker 5: of people don't want them there. But then there are
12:31
Speaker 5: others that are going to say, absolutely, we want them here.
12:35
Speaker 5: Regardless of of anything they went and uh, and I
12:38
Speaker 5: think that both staff Sergeant Wolfe and Guard Specials Sarah
12:44
Speaker 5: Becksterrom are to be committed for that and they both
12:47
Speaker 5: sound like in in interviewing people that knew them and
12:52
Speaker 5: what are there It just seems to me that that
12:55
Speaker 5: they both were quality human beings, one of whom's life
12:57
Speaker 5: was ended and the other one's fighting for his life.
12:59
Speaker 7: Is we speak, we could be proud of our National Guard.
13:02
Speaker 7: I think they've stepped up as they always have through emergencies,
13:05
Speaker 7: through whatever we've asked them to do, overseas deployments, and
13:09
Speaker 7: now what they've done washing in d C. And by
13:11
Speaker 7: all accounts they've they've been honorable in their service in DC.
13:17
Speaker 5: On that's without you can say that.
13:19
Speaker 7: And I think you can also be critical of the leadership,
13:23
Speaker 7: whether that's Governor Morrissey, whether that's General Seward, whether that's
13:26
Speaker 7: Donald President Donald Trump, for why they were there and
13:30
Speaker 7: what they were doing. Was it more of being seen
13:35
Speaker 7: a political prop thing? You know, sure they were sworn
13:39
Speaker 7: in as marshals, but were they following proper law enforcement
13:44
Speaker 7: procedures and the things that they did? And it doesn't
13:47
Speaker 7: take away from the bravery, uh, and the things that
13:50
Speaker 7: they've done. Certainly the service and the life of specialist
13:53
Speaker 7: specstrum for sure, but we do kind of need to
13:56
Speaker 7: know these things in the circumstances because this is how
13:59
Speaker 7: we also to protect our National Guard going forward, to
14:03
Speaker 7: making sure that they're trained for certain situations, including an
14:06
Speaker 7: ambush situation like that, which you can't really prepare for,
14:10
Speaker 7: you know, when it happens, but there's things you can.
14:12
Speaker 5: Do, all right, quickly Interims this weekend.
14:15
Speaker 7: This weekend, we're not seeing a whole lot of agendas yet,
14:17
Speaker 7: so I don't know what to expect. All I know is, boy,
14:20
Speaker 7: there are a lot of fundraisers for various members of
14:23
Speaker 7: the Republican House of Delegates between Sunday and Monday. Like,
14:28
Speaker 7: if you're a lobbyist here in Charles, then you'd better
14:31
Speaker 7: get out your checkbooks because there's a lot of fundraisers
14:34

18:34
Speaker 2: Works.
18:34
Speaker 8: Sure so In august we have Nominating day at our
18:38
Speaker 8: office and it's very kind of a small. Group it's
18:42
Speaker 8: any of our alumni, dancers our board of, directors and
18:44
Speaker 8: our staff and we literally hang blue poster board for
18:48
Speaker 8: boys and pink poster board for, girls and people can
18:51
Speaker 8: nominate a danswer somebody they would like to see. Dance
18:54
Speaker 8: the dancers have no. Idea their name is on our.
18:56
Speaker 8: Wall and then From august till last night we match
19:00
Speaker 8: up six, couples twelve. People we try to do a
19:04
Speaker 8: really good job of getting different friend groups and different
19:06
Speaker 8: occupations and different ages and try to make it as
19:09
Speaker 8: really diverse of a group as we. Can and then
19:12
Speaker 8: last night we reveal them they have five, months Tell
19:15
Speaker 8: may the first to raise as much money as they
19:17
Speaker 8: can for The Night, away and that would get them
19:19
Speaker 8: The People's choice mirror. Ball and then there is also
19:22
Speaker 8: a judge's, choice so that same time they're raising, money
19:24
Speaker 8: they are learning one. Dance we assign them a. Choreographer
19:27
Speaker 8: so none of the dancers are professional. Dancers they're all, amateurs,
19:31
Speaker 8: volunteers you, know people who just want to do good
19:35
Speaker 8: for The Night away and it's a super fun. Thing
19:37
Speaker 8: it has weird little tentacles that reach out into the.
19:40
Speaker 8: Community dress shops make some money because people go buy.
19:43
Speaker 8: Dresses venues make some money because they do. Events you,
19:47

Speaker 8: Them and See anthony does great job WITH Elk City Auto,
21:15
Speaker 8: Spot so if you need to kark, clean he's your.
21:17
Speaker 8: Guy and then couple number Six Christy. Goldman christy's a
21:21
Speaker 8: realtor With Better holmes And gardens and her Partner Drew,
21:24
Speaker 8: elliott who is a financial investor At.
21:29
Speaker 6: Morgan.
21:29
Speaker 5: Stanley, okay and then they all get a.
21:31
Speaker 8: Choreographer so all of them have a choreographer to help.
21:33
Speaker 5: Them so how does you say they get a? CHOREOGRAPHER i, mean,
21:37
Speaker 5: so how what do you get the, CHOREOGRAPHERS i, mean
21:39
Speaker 5: are they all? Local you?
21:40
Speaker 8: Will and they all are volunteers, Also so we assigned
21:43
Speaker 8: them a couple and they've met now and they'll start
21:46
Speaker 8: scheduling their practice and they kind of do that on their.
21:49
Speaker 8: OWN i try not to get in the middle of,
21:50
Speaker 8: practice but they'll pick what days and for how, long
21:53
Speaker 8: and they'll talk about what music they like and dance
21:56
Speaker 8: styles they, like and they'll come up with the Perfect.
21:58
Speaker 5: Now did you say that they all are in one
22:00
Speaker 5: dance Or? Okay so what did was that reveal last?
22:03
Speaker 6: Night they.
22:04
Speaker 8: DON'T i let them pick.
22:05
Speaker 5: It, okay we don't assign, them so they're not all
22:08
Speaker 5: doing the. Same, no, okay that's WHY i took.
22:10
Speaker 8: That, Sorry, no they all get to pick their own
22:12
Speaker 8: so they literally talk about what they. LIKE i suspect,
22:15
Speaker 8: that you, Know jeff's a. Golfer there might have something
22:17
Speaker 8: to do with golf in their. Routine you just never.
22:20
Speaker 6: Know but that's.
22:21
Speaker 5: What oddly, enough we were hear TO Tj meadows as
22:23
Speaker 5: a as the dancing.
22:24
Speaker 8: Golfer you, well he might have to find himself on the, list.
22:31
Speaker 7: Would you?
22:31
Speaker 5: Like but here's the, thing and you you, KNOW i
22:34
Speaker 5: have talked about this in the. Past people, say if
22:35
Speaker 5: you contact these people and they, say, hey guess. What
22:37
Speaker 5: you've been nominated to do, this what's the first thing
22:40
Speaker 5: you hear, is, OH i don't dance Or i'm a terrible.
22:42
Speaker 5: Dancer and you to, that you always say, WHAT i don't.
22:44
Speaker 12: CARE i don't.
22:45
Speaker 8: Care it's not why you were. Asked it's not why
22:47
Speaker 8: you would be. Asked we asked for a lot of, reasons.
22:50
Speaker 8: Right we asked because we think they're great community, leaders
22:53
Speaker 8: and that they would be somebody who would understand The
22:56
Speaker 8: United ways mission and, work and that they because they
22:58
Speaker 8: literally wear our brand for five. Months we want to
23:00
Speaker 8: make sure you know that they're out there for the right.
23:03
Speaker 8: Reasons and then they Say i'm too, busy to WHICH
23:05
Speaker 8: i also, REPLY i don't. Care everybody's.
23:07
Speaker 4: Busy margaret's.
23:08
Speaker 5: Hardcore and there's.
23:10
Speaker 8: This misnomer that nobody tells me, no And i've just
23:12
Speaker 8: set the record straight on your. Show that's a. Lie
23:14
Speaker 8: lots of people tell me, no but the right. People
23:17
Speaker 8: and we literally pray about. THIS i mean that the
23:19
Speaker 8: right people will say, yes and it turns out that,
23:21
Speaker 8: way and they work super. Hard we assign them each
23:24
Speaker 8: couple to try to raise twenty thousand dollars and they
23:28
Speaker 8: last year each couple raised over.
23:29
Speaker 5: Fifty so that's the goal is twenty yep and every
23:33
Speaker 5: couple raised over. Fifty.
23:35
Speaker 8: Yes and you can see the leaderboard if you want
23:37
Speaker 8: to take a look at our. Website so if you
23:39
Speaker 8: go to the Unit Away's Central West virginia dot, org
23:41
Speaker 8: you can already start to see that votes came in
23:44
Speaker 8: last night as soon as the announcement was, made and
23:47
Speaker 8: tables and tickets for the event are on sale. Now
23:49
Speaker 8: so if you're, interested you can also do that through
23:50
Speaker 8: the website or and can give us.
23:51
Speaker 6: A call to.
23:52
Speaker 5: Office it's a nine thirty one. Again we're talking To
23:54
Speaker 5: margaret O'Neil for The United wave Of Dave Island show
23:56

24:00

24:03
Speaker 5: help me take that first step their insurance Pre Sales licenser.
24:05
Speaker 5: Course we'll get you ready to set in for the
24:07
Speaker 5: state Required property And Casually Insurance Licenser. Exam start your
24:11
Speaker 5: career in this ever growing. Field check Out Bridge valley
24:13
Speaker 5: THAT eedu for. Details Bridge Valley committee Of Technical. College
24:16
Speaker 5: your career starts. Here what kind of fundraisers do they?
24:18
Speaker 5: DO i, MEAN i know they do BECAUSE i knew
24:20
Speaker 5: a good friend of mine participated a couple of years
24:22
Speaker 5: ago and he had like a bourbon tasting kind of an.
24:26
Speaker 5: Event so what are some of the fundraisers over the
24:29
Speaker 5: years that people have.
24:29
Speaker 8: Done it's really really. Creative so this Coming sunday is
24:32
Speaker 8: an event With santa for. Kids Santa's workshop is going
24:35
Speaker 8: to be At Rock city That jackline and her partner are.
24:37
Speaker 8: DOING i suspect there'll be some sports related. Things so
24:40
Speaker 8: some couples do a Super bowl square thing that you,
24:43
Speaker 8: can you, know buy square and if your team gets
24:46
Speaker 8: in that, square you could win some. Money we see
24:47
Speaker 8: that with the final. Four we had A master's party
24:50
Speaker 8: last year that was super. Fun that was the weekend
24:53
Speaker 8: before The masters and it was very golf. Themed there
24:56
Speaker 8: are often bourbon. Tastings sometimes they're just parties where they
25:01
Speaker 8: invite their. FRIENDS i think there'll be A christmas party
25:03
Speaker 8: before the month is over where people will pay a
25:05
Speaker 8: little bit to come to a Friends christmas party and
25:08
Speaker 8: those proceeds will come back to the unit. Away so
25:10
Speaker 8: they get very creative and they really it brings their own, personality,
25:13
Speaker 8: right stuff they like to do and they turn that
25:15
Speaker 8: into a. Fundraiser so we've seen. Everything paint. Parties last
25:20
Speaker 8: year there was A Redneck, riviera which was. Nice the
25:22
Speaker 8: first TIME i have got to wear my pajamas to an,
25:24
Speaker 8: event which was super. Fun usually it's, heels so it's you,
25:27
Speaker 8: know it's a little bit of. Everything Pink Pony party
25:29
Speaker 8: last year based around that. Song the dangers get really,
25:33
Speaker 8: creative but we just remind everybody it's all for the
25:36
Speaker 8: good of the.
25:36
Speaker 13: Cause.
25:37
Speaker 8: Right people often think or say to, me, oh it's
25:39
Speaker 8: such a you, know it's a gala and you get
25:42
Speaker 8: to do this and you get to do.
25:43
Speaker 7: That this is a means to the.
25:44
Speaker 14: End you.
25:45
Speaker 8: Know when we raised over four hundred thousand dollars last,
25:47
Speaker 8: year was our net proceeds from this event that allowed
25:50
Speaker 8: us to do lots of good work in this community
25:52
Speaker 8: and never in a year that we needed it more
25:54
Speaker 8: with what we've just seen with the food. Crisis that
25:57
Speaker 8: gave us a little bit of extra money that we
25:58
Speaker 8: could get back out into the community and help the
26:00
Speaker 8: pantries and help the. People so it is a fun,
26:03
Speaker 8: event and we, love, love love that everybody participates and looks,
26:06
Speaker 8: great but it's a means to the end of our
26:08
Speaker 8: work and we really appreciate.
26:10
Speaker 5: This AND i think it's also we need to give
26:12
Speaker 5: a shout out to the people that are that are
26:15
Speaker 5: doing the, dancing because this is a this is a
26:17
Speaker 5: lot of time and energy and what you generally see
26:21
Speaker 5: in situations like, this no matter what the fundraising endeavor, Is,
26:25
Speaker 5: margaret you know, this it's usually the people that have
26:26
Speaker 5: the least amount of time that are the ones that
26:29
Speaker 5: step up and, say, Yeah i'll do. This their calendars
26:32
Speaker 5: are pretty much already full, anyway and you're talking about business,
26:35
Speaker 5: leaders business owners in many, cases people that have you,
26:38
Speaker 5: know may not have an extra two hours a day
26:40
Speaker 5: between one and three am to do, something but they're
26:43
Speaker 5: the ones that, say, Yeah i'll do, this.
26:46
Speaker 8: Yep and they value the work that we do and
26:48
Speaker 8: they see the mission and so we love that. Part
26:50
Speaker 8: and then you, know we really have gained long term
26:53
Speaker 8: support from our dancers of the first four seasons AND
26:55
Speaker 8: i said last, night the first four seasons here In
26:57
Speaker 8: charleston for Our United ways raised over million. Dollars and
27:01
Speaker 8: so if you think about that in terms of what
27:02
Speaker 8: else could we do as a small staff to kind
27:05
Speaker 8: of raise that extra. Money they literally are working for
27:08
Speaker 8: us for five months and it is a big, endeavor
27:10
Speaker 8: in a big, commitment and we don't we don't sugarcoat,
27:12
Speaker 8: That we don't lie about.
27:13
Speaker 5: That, yeah we tell you or you tell them a
27:14
Speaker 5: help of, times but.
27:15
Speaker 8: We absolutely support them one hundred. Percent our staff becomes
27:18
Speaker 8: their support. Staff we help with tickets and you, know
27:21
Speaker 8: all the design work on their logos and all the
27:23
Speaker 8: things that they want their social media. Pages but what
27:26
Speaker 8: makes it work for them is you all the community
27:30
Speaker 8: do support. Them so you, know Like stephen was, Saying
27:32
Speaker 8: i've already picked by, couple and sometimes people wait until
27:35
Speaker 8: the night of and they vote for all six. Couples
27:37
Speaker 8: but the voting piece is really the profit for, us
27:41
Speaker 8: because it's literally a donation to the unit away in
27:43
Speaker 8: the name of the couple that you love the most and,
27:46
Speaker 8: so and you can vote for more than, one and
27:47
Speaker 8: you can vote as often as you, want and it's
27:49
Speaker 8: five dollars a.
27:50
Speaker 5: Vote there you, go and again all that money goes
27:52
Speaker 5: to the tax, Deductible, yes tax. Deductible. Yeah it's a
27:56
Speaker 5: music to a lot of people's. Ears all, right give
27:57
Speaker 5: us the dates of everything he has now that the
27:59
Speaker 5: revealed already has already happened, there and you're going to be,
28:01
Speaker 5: seeing if you're on social, media you're going to be
28:03
Speaker 5: seeing a lot of these couples are going to be
28:04
Speaker 5: hitting you. Up we've got this event going, on to
28:06
Speaker 5: that going you, know going. On but take us over
28:09
Speaker 5: the next couple of. Months they're going to be be working.
28:11
Speaker 5: Out they'll be they'll be.
28:14
Speaker 14: A.
28:14
Speaker 5: Dancer one time was actually a daughter of a friend
28:16
Speaker 5: of mine who was a. DANCER i referred to as.
28:17
Speaker 5: Practice she, said we. Rehearse we. Don't we don't call it.
28:21
Speaker 5: Practice football players. Practice we.
28:23
Speaker 8: Rehearse and so they'll be rehearsing from now Until may the,
28:27
Speaker 8: first which is the actual a lot of.
28:28
Speaker 5: Rehearsal five.
28:29
Speaker 8: Months they literally got almost exactly five months to make
28:32
Speaker 8: it happen and get it. Done we'll be at the
28:34
Speaker 8: beautiful you, Know Charleston coliseum and the actual dance, floor
28:39
Speaker 8: and that makes it so much easier for. Us and
28:41
Speaker 8: we love working with. Them they're a great, partner our ball.
28:44
Speaker 8: Family you Saw sean in here a couple of weeks.
28:46
Speaker 8: Ago continues to be the main, sponsor but we have
28:48
Speaker 8: great People Huntington bank sponsors OF Vip party And wes
28:51
Speaker 8: Virgin american sponsors Or West Virginia American Water sponts, sponsors
28:55
Speaker 8: the red carpet. Sponsor so if you haven't ever, been
28:58
Speaker 8: we do try to make it an, event you, know
29:01
Speaker 8: and we have the date again from The may the First.
29:03
Speaker 5: May of course we'll have you on plenty of.
29:05
Speaker 8: Times social event of the.
29:06
Speaker 5: Season is it's turning into. THAT i mean some people
29:09
Speaker 5: sold out.
29:10
Speaker 8: The last four years we've sold, out and so if
29:12
Speaker 8: you're interested in a, ticket we encourage you to find a.
29:14
Speaker 5: Way to make that. Happen and can you get the tickets?
29:16
Speaker 8: Now a right sure can and tables are on sale.
29:19
Speaker 8: Now front row tables are sold out after last, night
29:22
Speaker 8: but we have second row. Tables all of our tables
29:24
Speaker 8: seat ten, guests eighteen hundred for second, rows fifteen hundred
29:28
Speaker 8: for third, rows and then fourth row and back are
29:30
Speaker 8: one thousand, dollars so one hundred dollars a. Ticket basically
29:33
Speaker 8: if you are coming as a couple or six, people
29:35
Speaker 8: but we're going to make a table of ten for that.
29:38
Speaker 5: Event and that's all on your, website right.
29:40
Speaker 8: Yep all on the website or you can call me
29:41

34:02
Speaker 5: it's very difficult to talk, ABOUT i, know but it is.
34:05
Speaker 5: Worth it is worth not didn't Remembering Cassie johnson.
34:08
Speaker 18: Absolutely and thank you for the invitation today to talk About.
34:11
Speaker 18: Cassie it's hard to believe it's been five years because
34:14
Speaker 18: it seems like yesterday for many of, us and it
34:17
Speaker 18: is a somber day for, us and we definitely reflect
34:21
Speaker 18: on everything that had happened that. Day but we always
34:27
Speaker 18: keep in mind though that she left a legacy behind
34:30
Speaker 18: that was filled full of compassion and, kindness and so
34:34
Speaker 18: we try to we try to keep that in mind
34:38
Speaker 18: as we as we go through these tough, times and
34:41
Speaker 18: that keeps us going and definitely keeps the family. Going
34:45
Speaker 18: we stay in contact with them and we talk about
34:47
Speaker 18: her spirit all the. Time so definitely somber, day but
34:51
Speaker 18: we definitely keep her legacy in.
34:52
Speaker 5: Mind talk about the type Person Cassie johnson.
34:55
Speaker 18: Was she was a great, person very kind. Heart she
34:58
Speaker 18: had a tremendous, heart always willing to, serve always willing
35:02
Speaker 18: to just jump in and, help you, know even apart
35:06
Speaker 18: from her dedication as a police, officer she started off
35:09
Speaker 18: as a humane officer, obviously you, know with the, city
35:11
Speaker 18: and then she felt such a drive to continue to
35:15
Speaker 18: serve in different, ways and so she really dedicated herself
35:18
Speaker 18: to The Charleston Police. Department but even apart from, that
35:21
Speaker 18: just her kind spirit and her heart just just made
35:23
Speaker 18: her a very special.
35:24
Speaker 5: Person and here's WHAT i AND i did not know
35:26
Speaker 5: a patrol Officer johnson at, all BUT i will say
35:29
Speaker 5: this WHAT i have learned in talking to folks from
35:32
Speaker 5: your department and talking to. Her we interviewed her her
35:36
Speaker 5: members of her family not long, ago And Metro new's
35:38
Speaker 5: midday and talking to the mayor different, People Cassie. Johnson
35:41
Speaker 5: from WHAT i have been able to, gather she was
35:44
Speaker 5: a wonderful. Person if she never put on the, batch
35:48
Speaker 5: no matter what she, did if she were working fast
35:50
Speaker 5: food or, whatever she would still be that same person
35:53
Speaker 5: that she.
35:53
Speaker 18: Was you are absolutely, correct AND i had the privilege
35:55
Speaker 18: of knowing her in her humane officer role and their
35:59
Speaker 18: police officer.
35:59
Speaker 15: Role.
36:00
Speaker 18: YEAH i couldn't agree with you. More she just always
36:03
Speaker 18: a kind person and LIKE i, said always willing to
36:05
Speaker 18: jump in and to serve help wherever she.
36:07
Speaker 7: Can.
36:07
Speaker 5: Uh talk about that, Day, CHIEF i know it. Was
36:09
Speaker 5: it's difficult to talk, about but kind of kind of
36:11
Speaker 5: take us through that.
36:13
Speaker 14: Day.
36:14
Speaker 18: Yeah, so LIKE i, SAID i still remember like it was,
36:17
Speaker 18: yesterday AND i still remember getting that call and rushing
36:19
Speaker 18: to the, scene rushing to the your chief deputy at the, time,
36:21
Speaker 18: RIGHT i was deputy chief, time and of course we're
36:25
Speaker 18: we're one of the very first calls you know that
36:27
Speaker 18: that go, out and you, KNOW i still remember it
36:30
Speaker 18: like it was, yesterday and my heart. Sunk and, unfortunately
36:34
Speaker 18: in that type of, role you can't really grief because
36:37
Speaker 18: you're so in tune to what you need to do
36:40
Speaker 18: to take care of.
36:40
Speaker 5: Things And i've been told by first responders that grief comes. Later,
36:45
Speaker 5: absolutely if you're doing your, job it's not it's not,
36:47
Speaker 5: then but go, ahead.
36:48
Speaker 18: Absolutely and many of us were out for several. Days
36:52
Speaker 18: we didn't even go, home and so that was. Tough
36:55
Speaker 18: it was a very tough several days to get. Through
36:59
Speaker 18: but we're very resilient and we're very a close knit
37:03
Speaker 18: family here AT. Cpd so, uh just being with other
37:06
Speaker 18: officers and other people you know that that shared the
37:09
Speaker 18: same grief with, me it just made it a little
37:11
Speaker 18: bit easier to get.
37:12
Speaker 5: Through so the, call IF i remember, correctly the calling
37:17
Speaker 5: through that was parking somebody was it was it was
37:20
Speaker 5: it was a complain about about. Parking that.
37:23
Speaker 18: Correct, yeah someone was just like kind of parked in
37:25
Speaker 18: the middle of garrison and just a simple non one one.
37:28
Speaker 18: Call but you, know it goes to show you that
37:30
Speaker 18: nothing is routine that that we go. Through and During cassie's,
37:34
Speaker 18: investigation she found the person that that did park it
37:38
Speaker 18: legally in just planing or asked him to move and
37:42
Speaker 18: things escalated very quickly from that.
37:44
Speaker 5: Point, yeah And Josha Joshua phillips was a, shooter later
37:48
Speaker 5: convicted a second degree murder and sentenced to forty years in.
37:51
Speaker 5: Prison AND i, Think, chief it says. Something i'm going
37:55
Speaker 5: to try to say this the best most compassionate way
37:57
Speaker 5: THAT i.
37:57
Speaker 19: Can.
37:58
Speaker 5: Uh her death came because he, fired, okay and then
38:05
Speaker 5: she on Her and again bear with me out, here
38:09
Speaker 5: on her way down she. Fired that is. Correct so
38:12
Speaker 5: she even in her LAST i, mean of course she
38:15
Speaker 5: passed a couple of days, later but even on her way,
38:18
Speaker 5: down she was able to produce her her, weapon that is.
38:21
Speaker 18: Correct, yeah and her. Training anytime we're faced with situations like,
38:26
Speaker 18: yeah we revert right to our. Training and that's how
38:28
Speaker 18: she was, trained of. Course and, yeah and she was
38:32
Speaker 18: able to at least, attempt you, know to save her
38:36
Speaker 18: own life at that, point and not only her, life
38:39
Speaker 18: but possibly other.
38:40
Speaker 5: Other people as. Well and AGAIN i, think AND i
38:42
Speaker 5: heard you say that in a previous, interview The, chief
38:46
Speaker 5: that there's nothing routine in the world of police. Work.
38:50
Speaker 5: Uh AND i think that goes for all emergency, responders
38:53
Speaker 5: no matter what there, are there's there's nothing. Routine and
38:55
Speaker 5: if you look across the nation at people that have
38:58
Speaker 5: tragically been killed Like Cassie johnson was a lot of
39:03
Speaker 5: it didn't start out on what you see on, television you,
39:06
Speaker 5: know like the Big hollywood production started out traffic stops
39:10
Speaker 5: or like a speeding troll or a welfare check or
39:13
Speaker 5: something like.
39:14
Speaker 18: That absolutely, right it's all. Senseless it's senseless. Violence it
39:18
Speaker 18: definitely did not need to. Happen and you, know And
39:21
Speaker 18: cassie is just part of a huge law enforcement family,
39:25
Speaker 18: nationwide AND i think it speaks volumes that her sacrifice
39:30
Speaker 18: is what officers do every day across the. Nation so you,
39:35
Speaker 18: know her sacrifice five years ago is should definitely let
39:39
Speaker 18: people know that we're out. Here we're here to serve
39:42
Speaker 18: no matter of the, dangers and we stand between good and.
39:46
Speaker 18: Evil and even though these tragedies, happen we still put
39:50
Speaker 18: on the uniform and when we come out every day
39:51
Speaker 18: and work.
39:51
Speaker 5: HARD i had you helped me facilitate an interview not long,
39:55
Speaker 5: ago BECAUSE i know you guys were doing some recruiting
39:57
Speaker 5: for The Charleston Police department trying to get to get
40:00
Speaker 5: some new folks. IN i know all the law enforcement
40:01
Speaker 5: agencies are in needed people right. Now i'm just kind
40:04
Speaker 5: of curious when somebody applies to be an officer In,
40:08
Speaker 5: charleston or let's just say that they're, hired and Is
40:11
Speaker 5: Cassie johnson part of their? Training, now does her legacy
40:14
Speaker 5: continue to just, say you, know we want to always
40:17
Speaker 5: when we go out, there even though officer you may
40:19
Speaker 5: not have known, her do they know her?
40:21
Speaker 18: Story, absolutely we definitely share that. Story and with any
40:26
Speaker 18: tragedy that we've, had we try to share those. Stories
40:29
Speaker 18: not to create a, somber you, know a somber attitude with,
40:35
Speaker 18: them but to let them, know, hey this job is,
40:38
Speaker 18: dangerous and, yes look at the legacy that they've left.
40:40
Speaker 18: Behind here's what they stood. For they stood between good and,
40:43
Speaker 18: evil and that's what we're asking you to. Do, so,
40:47
Speaker 18: yes we definitely do. That we definitely get them familiar
40:51
Speaker 18: with them and what they stood. For and also just
40:54
Speaker 18: from an officer safety, standpoint we let them, know, hey
40:57
Speaker 18: this is what to look, for this is what to
40:59
Speaker 18: do in these. Situation so her legacy lives on through, that.
41:03
Speaker 5: And there's going to be COMMEMORATION i understand happening later.
41:07
Speaker 5: Today talk about.
41:07
Speaker 18: Them, Yeah So cassie's, family her mother and her sister,
41:11
Speaker 18: specifically we're wanting to purchase a, bench a memorial bench
41:16
Speaker 18: to put beside of her, gravesite just as a memorial
41:20
Speaker 18: people can come and relax and sit down and reflect
41:23
Speaker 18: on What cassie stood for and her. Legacy of, course
41:27
Speaker 18: and through various donations from, corporations from personal donations you,
41:34
Speaker 18: know of, course we appreciate all of those on behalf
41:37
Speaker 18: Of cheryl And chelsea her, family and they were able
41:41
Speaker 18: to purchase this. Bench and, yes today that marks the
41:45
Speaker 18: five year. Anniversary we will help them dedicate that bench
41:49
Speaker 18: at three o'clock.
41:49
Speaker 5: Today and where is.
41:50
Speaker 18: That it's out at the cemetery In. SYSTEMVILLE i think
41:54
Speaker 18: it's Called Floral Hills. Cemetery it's just Past Tuppers creek
41:59
Speaker 18: up In.
41:59
Speaker 5: Sisavie it's at three o'clock. Today and is that something
42:01
Speaker 5: that the public is invited to attend or is it a?
42:05
Speaker 6: Prive?
42:05
Speaker 5: MEAN i just want it for. Clarification if it's a
42:07
Speaker 5: pre if it's a personal family, thing then you, know
42:09
Speaker 5: so be.
42:09
Speaker 18: It but, right, uh, no it's not a private. THING
42:13
Speaker 18: i would think if anybody would want to come pay their,
42:15
Speaker 18: respects we're more than welcome to come, out all.
