Latest / Time with God with John North / INTRODUCING: The New Christian - In the beginning with Ben McEachen
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to this episode of The New Christian, a podcast
- 0:11Speaker 1: for anyone exploring faith, asking big questions about God, Jesus,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and what it really means to call yourself a Christian.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Today we're chatting with Ben McKegan from Hope Mornings, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: in fact, for this very first episode of the new Christian,
- 0:32Speaker 1: turning things around a little bit, I'm actually gonna be
- 0:35Speaker 1: handing over the reins to Ben McKean.
- 0:38Speaker 1: To interview me as to how I became a Christian
- 0:42Speaker 1: and why I'm creating this podcast.
- 0:44Speaker 2: You're taking my job for me, Chris. Although I appreciate
- 0:47Speaker 2: on your podcast, The New Christian, congratulations on the new podcast,
- 0:50Speaker 2: The New Christian. In the first episode, you're giving me
- 0:53Speaker 2: the reins. That's really nice of you, but you've already
- 0:55Speaker 2: asked my first question, which is, why are you doing this,
- 0:57Speaker 1: Chris? I'm not the best at being interviewed, really. No. OK,
- 1:00Speaker 1: so why, why am I doing it? Um,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Relatively recently became a Christian, um.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Like I said, sort of in the introduction, when is that?
- 1:11Speaker 1: That's a good question. In fact, that will be an episode.
- 1:13Speaker 1: When do I know I'm a Christian,
- 1:15Speaker 2: on the, on the first season.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yes, it will be, it's actually, it's the last episode.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's when you finally get there and go, am I?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Because of course you start going to church, but you're
- 1:25Speaker 1: not baptized, then you get baptized, so that's when you got,
- 1:28Speaker 1: but what about before, it's, it's hard to know, and,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and
- 1:31Speaker 2: this is all very
- 1:32Speaker 2: recent for you.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Right, only in the last under 3 years of recording
- 1:36Speaker 1: under 3 years of becoming a Christian. And so we're
- 1:40Speaker 1: gonna be talking about all sorts of things, um.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Who is God is the very next episode is gonna
- 1:47Speaker 1: be with Max Jeganathan from the Center for Public Christianity,
- 1:50Speaker 1: talking about who is God. And it's a very generic question,
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's who is the God that when you're first even
- 1:59Speaker 1: thinking of there maybe being a God, discovering God, rediscovering God.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Who am I speaking to when I maybe get down
- 2:10Speaker 1: on my knees next to my bed and pray, or
- 2:11Speaker 1: when I'm laying in bed and praying, or when I'm
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the car driving to work and praying, or whenever
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm going, God, where are you? I, I think you're real,
- 2:18Speaker 1: please help me. I don't, I don't even know what
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm supposed to
- 2:20Speaker 1: say.
- 2:21Speaker 2: These are exactly the sort of questions that you and
- 2:23Speaker 2: your wife Vanessa were wrestling with a couple of years ago,
- 2:26Speaker 2: just a couple of years ago.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 2: what was your relationship with God like before?
- 2:34Speaker 1: I think when I was a really little kid, I
- 2:36Speaker 1: think there might have been some type of relationship, but
- 2:39Speaker 1: neither of us actually grew up in a Christian household.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Nominally Christian, but we didn't go to church, it was
- 2:47Speaker 1: really just on our um birth certificate, all the, all
- 2:50Speaker 1: the documents at school, right? But apart from that, no.
- 2:54Speaker 1: It was, it was a very secular, non-Christian, non-religious household.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Sounds a lot like Australia. Yeah,
- 3:01Speaker 1: right, and I think there was, I had one.
- 3:05Speaker 1: There was one thing dad would always say, and I
- 3:07Speaker 1: think it's what he said that his dad told him,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and it was just the golden rule, do unto others
- 3:11Speaker 1: as you'd have them do unto you. That was the only,
- 3:14Speaker 1: that was the closest the house really ever got to Christianity,
- 3:16Speaker 1: apart from maybe Christmas and Easter and then how close
- 3:18Speaker 1: were we're really getting, I don't know. Didn't go to
- 3:20Speaker 1: church at Christmas or Easter, um, so yeah, there was no,
- 3:24Speaker 1: there was no real true connection with God, um.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Teenage years.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I did get actually a Gideon Bible in high school
- 3:34Speaker 1: and I do still have that. And I did, yeah, yeah, little,
- 3:38Speaker 1: little green one, little pocket one, and um, and I
- 3:41Speaker 1: do remember reading through that. I think it's just Psalms
- 3:43Speaker 1: and New Testament, but I did read through bits of
- 3:45Speaker 1: it when I was um as a teenager, cos I
- 3:48Speaker 1: think every teenager, that's a troubled time.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And I actually found some solace in it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I do wish that I'd followed through and gone to
- 3:56Speaker 1: church as a teenager, I really do regret that. um,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and then go through my university days, um, I went
- 4:03Speaker 1: and did a bachelor of Science.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Very, it's very materialistic. Everything could be proven and discovered
- 4:11Speaker 1: through formulas and just better equipment, of course. And, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: that was how I saw, and so my relationship to
- 4:18Speaker 1: the world and everything around me, the God element just
- 4:22Speaker 1: started to just, I, I turned away from it. I
- 4:25Speaker 1: can't say he turned away from it, I don't think
- 4:26Speaker 1: God ever turns away or stops speaking, but we can,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I guess, turn away.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And I lived in a very materialistic world and it
- 4:34Speaker 1: did not satisfy anything, it,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I thought it was all very good and, and, and whatnot,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but it's, it, it ended up feeling very empty many
- 4:43Speaker 1: years later.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Is
- 4:44Speaker 2: that then why you started searching for God? Is it,
- 4:47Speaker 2: is that even how you describe what happened a couple
- 4:49Speaker 2: of years
- 4:50Speaker 2: ago?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Um, I think both Vanessa and I have had some
- 4:53Speaker 1: very interesting experiences in our lives that,
- 4:57Speaker 1: And we both have, uh, Vanessa did biology at university, so, and,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and other subjects. Vanessa's way more educated than herself, but we,
- 5:05Speaker 1: we both were at university, different university, but we studied
- 5:08Speaker 1: sciences and lots of different types of subjects, and,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Our
- 5:13Speaker 1: Over the years we saw things that I think were
- 5:16Speaker 1: counter to what the sciences would've, how it would've explained things.
- 5:21Speaker 1: There were things that you can't explain.
- 5:24Speaker 1: That led us both into, I think, the new age
- 5:27Speaker 1: world and all that, that goes with it. Oh,
- 5:29Speaker 2: you started looking into other religions, other
- 5:32Speaker 1: other religions, other,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Philosophies of life, all sorts of things.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Because what you're basically looking for an explanation for the
- 5:41Speaker 2: things that science can't explain. There's
- 5:43Speaker 1: a
- 5:43Speaker 1: void.
- 5:44Speaker 1: There's a, there's a clear void, an emptiness that you
- 5:48Speaker 1: feel deep within. I think anyone.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Who hasn't, and that, and I'm not gonna say that
- 5:53Speaker 1: I've somehow just completely filled it because guess what, I'm
- 5:56Speaker 1: human and I still sometimes turn away, right? So that's,
- 5:59Speaker 1: that's that feeling still is there at times, but way
- 6:02Speaker 1: more so before finding God, well, yeah, I guess before
- 6:07Speaker 1: finding God, yes, and it, and nothing was, was filling that,
- 6:09Speaker 1: nothing was satisfying that.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Nothing really answered it, and I'm not saying that coming
- 6:14Speaker 1: to Christianity's answered all the questions, by the way. It's,
- 6:16Speaker 1: it's asked a whole lot more, hence this podcast, hence
- 6:18Speaker 1: season one and probably a season two.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Um, so the relationship was very distant from God, and
- 6:25Speaker 1: it wasn't until years later, like, like you mentioned just
- 6:28Speaker 1: a few years ago when Vanessa and I started listening
- 6:31Speaker 1: to Bible in a Year podcasts before going to church.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Well, I, I think over the years people had,
- 6:41Speaker 1: In, in my science and materialist type of world and friends,
- 6:45Speaker 1: that the the the worldview was very much like, oh, Chris,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you don't, you don't need the Bible.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You know, or, or people would just tell me, oh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: you know, the Bible says X, Y, and Z, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: so I, instead of primary sources, would take other people's
- 6:59Speaker 1: opinions as, as being the gospel truths, which was not true,
- 7:02Speaker 1: not true.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think I was like, OK, I'm gonna read this,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but I don't know if I can really do this,
- 7:08Speaker 1: so maybe I'll, I'll listen to it first. So, um,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I was listening to the Bible that would read three
- 7:13Speaker 1: chapters that would, uh, it was an American couple, it
- 7:15Speaker 1: was a really good podcast, um.
- 7:17Speaker 1: They would read 3 chapters and then they would discuss
- 7:19Speaker 1: it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It wasn't you and Vanessa listening to it together. No,
- 7:22Speaker 1: no, this is the thing. So Vanessa was listening, she'd
- 7:25Speaker 1: also listened to a Bible in a year podcast, you
- 7:26Speaker 1: didn't get past.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Some, some part of the Old Testament, so she did stop,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but the interest was there. She listened to another podcast, um,
- 7:36Speaker 1: not a Christian podcast, just like a,
- 7:39Speaker 1: It's close to Christian living, but it's not, right, it's,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's a very generic sort of podcast that occasionally she
- 7:44Speaker 1: would talk about her faith.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But Vanessa found some sort of solace in that, and
- 7:49Speaker 1: then she started again going back to other Christian podcasts
- 7:51Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff. But you're doing this separately. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:54Speaker 1: it's completely separate. We knew the other was interested.
- 7:59Speaker 1: How interested we didn't know, and it all culminated one night.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Vanessa said
- 8:06Speaker 1: Very sheepishly, I should add.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Would you mind if maybe one Sunday you
- 8:12Speaker 1: Drive me to church.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Like in that word, in those words were her not
- 8:16Speaker 1: expecting me to want to come along.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And my response was,
- 8:22Speaker 1: It, it, it was actually a happiness cos I think
- 8:25Speaker 1: I'd been wanting to go, but not wanting to ask
- 8:27Speaker 1: the question, I was like, OK, let's go.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Which is, which is really funny because.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I look back on, on my life and I don't
- 8:36Speaker 1: think at any point I actually wanted to be a Christian.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Like if you look, if you asked me when I
- 8:39Speaker 1: was at university, I would have said I do not
- 8:40Speaker 1: want to be a Christian. Didn't want to be a Christian.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I saw the bible study guys at uni and I
- 8:45Speaker 1: thought oh no.
- 8:47Speaker 1: No, I know what, I know what this world's all about,
- 8:50Speaker 1: but here I am, 20 years later, so keen to
- 8:53Speaker 1: go to church. So we go to church, nervous, really,
- 8:56Speaker 1: really nervous. Um, our hands are sweating, we were worried
- 9:00Speaker 1: the place was just gonna just burn down.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And it sounds so silly, right, but there's I'm
- 9:07Speaker 2: sure a lot of people actually feel that,
- 9:09Speaker 1: yes. Like we didn't think it probably really would, like,
- 9:12Speaker 1: did we really? I don't know. That's actually, yeah, we
- 9:15Speaker 1: were nervous and we were worried. How do we do,
- 9:17Speaker 1: what do we do, what do we wear, where do
- 9:19Speaker 1: we sit, who do we speak to, what do we say?
- 9:21Speaker 1: I don't know any of the right words. I, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: don't know the right words, cos it's a whole of
- 9:24Speaker 1: the language. You don't realize how much of a, another
- 9:27Speaker 1: language it is. You know, I didn't know how to
- 9:29Speaker 1: read a Bible.
- 9:31Speaker 1: What, what is it when it has a colon in
- 9:32Speaker 1: the middle? What does that mean? And there's a dash there.
- 9:34Speaker 1: What kind of crazy computer code are you spinning here?
- 9:39Speaker 1: No, it's actually really simple once you get
- 9:40Speaker 1: the hang of it.
- 9:41Speaker 2: You guys were listening to podcasts on your journey, but
- 9:44Speaker 2: were any of them.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Answering the kinds of questions that you started to develop,
- 9:50Speaker 2: everything from what's going on with church, what should I wear,
- 9:54Speaker 2: when do I stand up and sit down to who
- 9:56Speaker 2: is God or Jesus or Holy Spirit or what's this
- 9:58Speaker 2: thing called the Trinity, or where do I start reading
- 10:00Speaker 2: the Bible, like did you find
- 10:02Speaker 1: those resources all of it, bits of it. So you
- 10:05Speaker 1: get some of the theology, but the practical elements of,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Going to church, serving, um, growth groups, small groups, whatever
- 10:17Speaker 1: group that they've got different names, you'll find that out
- 10:19Speaker 1: as you listen to the, the podcast, um.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Why is everyone so nice?
- 10:27Speaker 1: Why are they so nice? We lived in this world of,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you know, it's the whole quid pro quo, right?
- 10:33Speaker 1: But none of that works at church. People wanna serve
- 10:36Speaker 1: because it's a blessing to serve.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Full stop.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Whereas we didn't wanna, we didn't wanna ask for any
- 10:44Speaker 1: help because we were like we're gonna have to help.
- 10:49Speaker 1: That was the mindset, as we're coming into church.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Because that's how the world outside of church operates, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 1: it's all I do something for you, does something like
- 10:59Speaker 1: does something for me, right? But church is not about that.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It's you, you don't have, there is no, like I
- 11:05Speaker 1: will just serve you.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And everyone's trying to say, so it works.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But it's a totally different, so not only is it
- 11:13Speaker 1: a different language, it's a culturally, completely different.
- 11:18Speaker 2: The new Christian then is your.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Attempt to try to answer some of those questions that
- 11:27Speaker 2: you and Vanessa had as you were exploring Christianity. This
- 11:30Speaker 2: is the podcast that you wished was around when you
- 11:33Speaker 2: were becoming Christian?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Definitely, yes, that, that was the goal. Um, I, I,
- 11:40Speaker 1: this podcast, I wanted to make no matter what. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: think it's great that I'm gonna hope to be able
- 11:44Speaker 1: to do it here, because I think it's the best
- 11:46Speaker 1: place to be doing it. Um, but yeah, it's.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I, I guess I see the world in a certain way,
- 11:53Speaker 1: being a radio person, and podcasting felt like I'm not
- 11:56Speaker 1: the guy who's gonna write a book. But podcasting, talking
- 11:59Speaker 1: about things, that's how I get around the world. That's
- 12:03Speaker 1: how I navigate the world. And so I thought a
- 12:05Speaker 1: podcast is the perfect way to try and detail all
- 12:09Speaker 1: these steps in the journey. Talk it out loud. Hey,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I experienced this. I don't understand why they do this. Hey, uh,
- 12:15Speaker 1: some expert, why do they do this?
- 12:18Speaker 1: Oh great, makes sense now. That's basically the idea for
- 12:21Speaker 1: the podcast.
- 12:22Speaker 2: But it must have been difficult trying to work out
- 12:24Speaker 2: what steps to put into the first season, particularly, it's
- 12:28Speaker 2: the new Christian, you are aiming to provide all kinds
- 12:31Speaker 2: of answers to initial questions and questions that some people
- 12:36Speaker 2: might think I'm embarrassed to ask, or,
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's gonna offend somebody if I ask, all those sorts
- 12:41Speaker 2: of questions rolling around in you, Chris, and then you're
- 12:43Speaker 2: trying to encapsulate that in one first season of a podcast. Yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 1: so the first season's kind of a bit more, it's
- 12:50Speaker 1: closer to an album. So every other season, I imagine
- 12:53Speaker 1: it'll be a bit more week to week, just finding
- 12:55Speaker 1: something that's an interesting concept to work in, do a
- 12:58Speaker 1: deep dive. But the first season, I really wanted it
- 13:00Speaker 1: to have a, a set flow.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Us chatting right now, it's the beginning, it's, it's why
- 13:08Speaker 1: are we doing it, right? And then, and then next
- 13:09Speaker 1: week is, is who is God, with Max Jeganath and, um,
- 13:13Speaker 1: who is Jesus with Skip Smith from Alpha, who Alpha, well,
- 13:18Speaker 1: they do courses at churches to help people who are
- 13:20Speaker 1: coming into faith. Um, we talk about who is the
- 13:22Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, the, the, the how to read the Bible,
- 13:25Speaker 1: how to pray, all of these things get covered, um,
- 13:27Speaker 1: navigating church I mentioned.
- 13:30Speaker 1: This is a whole journey right through to the last episode,
- 13:34Speaker 1: which is with Simon Manchester. When do I know I'm
- 13:37Speaker 1: a Christian, which is a, it's a funny question to ask.
- 13:41Speaker 1: You think along this point I've already become a Christian.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Surely I'd know. Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Simon does a great job at actually talking about that,
- 13:51Speaker 1: talking to that, um, so you definitely wanna be tuning
- 13:54Speaker 1: into that, and then at the very end, uh, there'll
- 13:56Speaker 1: be a few weeks-ish, uh, where we'll take all the
- 14:00Speaker 1: questions that have been submitted by, by you.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Over each episode, so whatever question you have regarding an episode,
- 14:07Speaker 1: just send it through and then we'll be recording an
- 14:10Speaker 1: extra episode at the end. That'll be a bonus one,
- 14:13Speaker 1: all Q&A, um, questions answered with, and we, we don't
- 14:17Speaker 1: even know who we're gonna interview then, we'll we'll we'll
- 14:19Speaker 1: we'll come to that when we get to that, and
- 14:21Speaker 1: then there'll be a bit of a break before season two,
- 14:22Speaker 1: which will be a bit more.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Don't wanna say loosey goosey, but it's, you know, it's
- 14:26Speaker 1: one episode at a time. This is a very structured season,
- 14:28Speaker 1: this is hoping to help someone to hold their hand
- 14:33Speaker 1: through a very nervous moment. When you decide to become
- 14:37Speaker 1: a Christian, life doesn't just get better.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It does, but not how you expect it would.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It's actually really difficult. There are challenges. There are.
- 14:48Speaker 1: There are, there, there are, you know, you're learning new language,
- 14:50Speaker 1: you're learning. If you've not been a Christian for 40
- 14:52Speaker 1: odd years and now you become a Christian, it is
- 14:54Speaker 1: not an easy thing to just go and do. It's worthwhile,
- 14:57Speaker 1: but it's not easy.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Um, and so this is hopefully gonna be a really
- 15:00Speaker 1: good way to help people on that journey. In fact,
- 15:03Speaker 1: there's an episode that Max Jeganathan suggested should be in
- 15:06Speaker 1: season one, not season two. Why is there evil, which
- 15:10Speaker 1: is a really important question, and that is in
- 15:12Speaker 1: there
- 15:12Speaker 2: as well. Such a great question. You're gonna, you're answering
- 15:14Speaker 2: that in this first season. We'll
- 15:16Speaker 1: attempt to answer it. Yeah, look, uh, Carl Fay, uh,
- 15:18Speaker 1: from Olive Tree Media is there for that episode, and.
- 15:24Speaker 1: He brings a lot to it, and uh yeah, you
- 15:27Speaker 1: gotta listen to it.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And Chris, each episode, do they run for 34, 10 hours?
- 15:34Speaker 2: You're picking big subject matter here to try to even
- 15:37Speaker 2: give an initial glimpse at. Are they gonna be lecture series? Yeah,
- 15:43Speaker 1: right, so they're all about,
- 15:45Speaker 1: 30 to 40 minutes, um, one of them runs a
- 15:50Speaker 1: bit over an hour, that's, um, the navigating Church episode,
- 15:53Speaker 1: that's because we look at a whole lot of different things.
- 15:55Speaker 1: We talk about how to, how do we get to church,
- 15:58Speaker 1: what do we do at church, um, why do we
- 16:00Speaker 1: go to church, we even look into some of the
- 16:02Speaker 1: den denominations as to what they all sort of, how
- 16:06Speaker 1: their viewpoints sit, so you can get a bit of
- 16:08Speaker 1: an idea.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Um, so that one goes a bit longer and then
