- 0:04Speaker 1: The Joe Rogan Experience.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day.
- 0:12Speaker 1: We're up.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What's up? Good to see you, brother. What's cracking?
- 0:15Speaker 1: Good to be seen, man. Stoked to be here.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Stoked to have you, man. Yeah. What a fucking cute
- 0:19Speaker 2: kid you have, dude.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. He's the best, man.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So blessed. He loves you. When you're trying to put
- 0:25Speaker 2: him down, he's like, no.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I think it's because I just spent, we just went
- 0:29Speaker 1: to Utah and I had three or five days with
- 0:32Speaker 1: him just like a lot of time with him and
- 0:35Speaker 1: he has separation anxiety from me as I do with him.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I'm like, it's the best man.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I know people that don't have kids. It's like, you
- 0:42Speaker 2: don't understand the level of love that you have for them.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's really crazy.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Or people who have kids and don't hang out with
- 0:50Speaker 1: their kids like that. I just, I don't get it.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I don't get it either.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'll spend every second I can with my kids.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It's weird. It's weird that people, maybe it's something that
- 0:59Speaker 2: happened to them when they were young or something.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So what's cracking? What's, what's the latest?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Uh, I mean, my doc came out today.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Today.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Long time coming.
- 1:13Speaker 2: What was that experience like?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Well, the beginning of it was, was shortly after my
- 1:22Speaker 1: book came out. So I kind of understood why people
- 1:26Speaker 1: wanted a doc from me at that point. And, um,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I was honored and I was flattered and I was
- 1:34Speaker 1: going down the journey of filming this doc, but it
- 1:38Speaker 1: didn't really have an ending. I guess the light at
- 1:42Speaker 1: the end of the tunnel during that time around 2017
- 1:45Speaker 1: was that I was sober and I survived a plane crash.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But really I was struggling with ever flying again, struggling
- 1:55Speaker 1: with survivor's guilt, struggling with a lot of stuff. And
- 2:00Speaker 1: at the time the directors had mentioned to me, like,
- 2:02Speaker 1: can you just look at a plane or act like
- 2:04Speaker 1: you're going to go fly in a plane or walk
- 2:07Speaker 1: towards a plane? I was like, fuck no, I would never,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I can't even consider it. I can't even do it
- 2:12Speaker 1: for you for, for like fantasy purposes for the end
- 2:16Speaker 1: of this doc, you know? Um, and I think that
- 2:21Speaker 1: set in after a while where I had to acknowledge and,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and and just understand I was, I was afraid to
- 2:31Speaker 1: ever fly again. And, and this thing had huge power
- 2:34Speaker 1: over me to the point where it, you know, it
- 2:37Speaker 1: dictated how I got on tour, how many days I'd
- 2:40Speaker 1: travel on bus to New York, how many days I'd
- 2:42Speaker 1: be on the Queen Mary to go into England.
- 2:46Speaker 2: How long would that take?
- 2:47Speaker 1: Oh, dude, so long.
- 2:48Speaker 2: The England one's crazy.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Comfortably on the bus from here to New York, probably
- 2:53Speaker 1: six or seven days. If you want to stop at
- 2:55Speaker 1: hotels and You know, I toured with my kids, you know,
- 2:59Speaker 1: their whole life. So stopping and doing some cool stuff
- 3:02Speaker 1: for them, six, seven days, and then a 10-day boat
- 3:06Speaker 1: ride from New York to the Hamptons.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Fuck.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's crazy. Yeah. So, yeah, my band would leave. They'd
- 3:15Speaker 1: be in England in 10 hours, whatever. It would take
- 3:18Speaker 1: me three weeks.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It sucked.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And then sometimes I'd be on the Queen Mary, too,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and we'd have... Wild weather, 30-foot waves, 170-mile-per-hour winds. And
- 3:28Speaker 1: I was like, is this any better than being on
- 3:31Speaker 1: a plane?
- 3:34Speaker 2: The ocean freaks me out. Yeah, it started to. The
- 3:37Speaker 2: big waves in particular, they freak me out.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we got into a couple storms on one of
- 3:42Speaker 1: the transatlantic crossings. Yeah, believe me, something was festering inside
- 3:47Speaker 1: where I had this urge to... to try to figure
- 3:53Speaker 1: out what had this power over me, which was flying. And, um, yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Well, it's totally understandable.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I think about it every day after a certain point.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And then, plus my kids, you know, they grew up
- 4:04Speaker 1: not flying. They, they grew up associating a plane, uh,
- 4:09Speaker 1: to a metal container where people die. I think, you know, unfortunately,
- 4:13Speaker 1: because that's what happened, you know, to my two best
- 4:18Speaker 1: friends and the two pilots who were on my plane. Um,
- 4:22Speaker 1: so yeah, it was, it was, it was hard. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: then I knew the day I did it, I could
- 4:27Speaker 1: show them that they could also do it and it
- 4:29Speaker 1: would probably break the, the trauma and the spell that my,
- 4:34Speaker 1: my accident caused however many years ago. And yeah, I
- 4:38Speaker 1: think after my accident and that whole process, I just,
- 4:42Speaker 1: everything people said I couldn't do after that, I would
- 4:43Speaker 1: just check them off one by one. Oh, you're not
- 4:45Speaker 1: going to run again. Oh, you're not going to play
- 4:47Speaker 1: the drums again. Oh, you're not, you're not going to
- 4:49Speaker 1: do this again. And, uh, And the one that I
- 4:51Speaker 1: gave myself, the restriction I gave myself is I'd never
- 4:54Speaker 1: fly again. And I broke it. And I fly again.
- 5:00Speaker 2: How many years did it take you before you got
- 5:01Speaker 2: on a plane again?
- 5:03Speaker 1: 20. And I even think back to that. I'm like,
- 5:05Speaker 1: 20 years. I lost 20 years with this thing having
- 5:08Speaker 1: power over me. But it was like a monster. It
- 5:11Speaker 1: kept getting bigger and bigger. And I was like, I
- 5:13Speaker 1: got to.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, you got to look at it in terms of
- 5:17Speaker 2: the odds. You survived a plane crash, which is the
- 5:20Speaker 2: odds of that are astronomical. The odds of you getting
- 5:23Speaker 2: in another plane crash are super low.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I know nobody thinks about it like that because it's
- 5:29Speaker 2: the opposite, because you've actually experienced it, so you know
- 5:32Speaker 2: what it is. Like, oh, my God, this is a
- 5:33Speaker 2: real possibility.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah. I can see that now because my son, who's 22,
- 5:39Speaker 1: he doesn't love to fly, and I always say, like,
- 5:41Speaker 1: we just were in Utah, and I took a flight,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you know. He ended up driving. I was like, son,
- 5:48Speaker 1: that's way more dangerous. Like, fly with me. I'm never
- 5:51Speaker 1: going to put you on a plane that I think
- 5:54Speaker 1: is unsafe. I'm so adamant about making sure the pilot's great,
- 5:58Speaker 1: the plane's had maintenance.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Whatever else. How do you check all that stuff?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Well, just if we're flying private, you're able to, like,
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, really make sure it's a great plane. Sometimes
- 6:09Speaker 1: even we'll fly on, like, someone's plane that we know.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So that makes me feel better. But, yeah, he just
- 6:15Speaker 1: drove safely. 16 hours round trip. I was like, son,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that's way more dangerous. Um, but yeah, that's what I
- 6:22Speaker 1: tell myself and I just got to have faith and, um, yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 2: What was the first plane trip like after 20 years?
- 6:34Speaker 1: It was nothing like I'd imagined it. Uh, I, I
- 6:42Speaker 1: made a deal with my wife and I just said, Hey,
- 6:43Speaker 1: if there's ever somewhere we can't go. Cause she was
- 6:46Speaker 1: a champ, man. She was, she was on tour buses
- 6:48Speaker 1: with me. She was on whatever, just, you know, going
- 6:51Speaker 1: kind of close by for trips that we'd go on.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And I said, if there's ever a trip that you
- 6:55Speaker 1: want us to go on that I need to fly,
- 6:57Speaker 1: just don't tell me and, uh, tell me the night
- 7:00Speaker 1: before and let's leave in the morning and I'm going
- 7:02Speaker 1: to do it. So that's what it was. And the
- 7:06Speaker 1: flight was awesome. Had contained none of the awful nightmares
- 7:10Speaker 1: that I had fabricated in my head that it would
- 7:13Speaker 1: be like uh over the years and yeah I think
- 7:17Speaker 1: I just needed a positive experience to cancel out the
- 7:21Speaker 1: the last bad one that I had yeah you know
- 7:25Speaker 1: um yeah that helped a lot and I think I
- 7:28Speaker 1: think also coming to terms with being so close to
- 7:32Speaker 1: my godson who was my assistant's son who passed away
- 7:36Speaker 1: in my plane crash and uh and his mom and
- 7:39Speaker 1: Che's mom and just knowing that uh, that, that there
- 7:44Speaker 1: was no, there was no hard feelings and, and the
- 7:48Speaker 1: survivor's guilt I was feeling was, was my own. And
- 7:53Speaker 1: to just think about them. And if the roles were reversed,
- 7:57Speaker 1: would they want me to really just sit around and
- 8:00Speaker 1: not flying again or have this thing have power over me? Um,
- 8:04Speaker 1: or if I was in their shoes, would I want
- 8:06Speaker 1: that for them? Like, of course not.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah. It's a, It's an experience that so few people
- 8:12Speaker 2: ever have. I mean, I can't imagine what it's like,
- 8:15Speaker 2: especially losing your friends. Yeah. And just the trauma of
- 8:19Speaker 2: the actual impact, the whole thing just stuck in your head.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It's, yeah, I mean, to this day, I always, like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: my wife's a great flyer. My band, they're all good flying,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you know. I think they can, my wife can probably
- 8:33Speaker 1: envision a trip, plan a trip, envision how rad it's
- 8:36Speaker 1: going to be, how cool it's going to be doing things.
- 8:38Speaker 1: rock climbing or whatever we're going to do, all I
- 8:41Speaker 1: can think about until I get there is like, am
- 8:43Speaker 1: I going to make it? Is, is this gonna, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I did this once and I almost died. So, you know, I,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I had to just stop that pattern of thinking to
- 8:53Speaker 1: the best of my ability. It still happens a little bit,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but I still can't, I have trouble booking planes. I
- 8:59Speaker 1: have trouble booking flights, um, without thinking of those things,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you know?
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I can only imagine. Well, it's awesome that you
- 9:08Speaker 2: got through it and got over it and did it
- 9:10Speaker 2: publicly so that other people can get inspiration from that.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And just realize like, hey, you know, maybe for them
- 9:18Speaker 2: it was a car accident or a bus accident or
- 9:20Speaker 2: whatever it is. Like you can keep moving.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. And I at the time, you know, A.M.
- 9:28Speaker 1: survived with me and then he lived for another year
- 9:31Speaker 1: and passed away of a drug overdose. But. During that
- 9:35Speaker 1: time where after I'd gotten out of the burn center
- 9:37Speaker 1: and did most of my recovery, it was hard to
- 9:40Speaker 1: find anyone who had been in a plane crash that
- 9:44Speaker 1: was severely burnt, like, you know, and lost people. There
- 9:48Speaker 1: was a lot of groups and a lot of people that, like,
- 9:52Speaker 1: support systems for people who were grieving and lost someone
- 9:55Speaker 1: in a plane crash, you know?
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 1: So i was kind of uh just lonely trying to
- 10:00Speaker 1: navigate figure it out just recently just like a few
- 10:04Speaker 1: days ago before my doc came out i someone kept
- 10:08Speaker 1: tagging me and i saw it this is this young
- 10:10Speaker 1: lady named riva she had a similar experience where she
- 10:13Speaker 1: was in a plane crash 50 of her body was
- 10:15Speaker 1: burnt and she lost her mom in the plane crash
- 10:18Speaker 1: so i was like this is really similar to me
- 10:21Speaker 1: and I've never met anyone that had even remotely kind
- 10:24Speaker 1: of the same experience. So I flew her out and
- 10:26Speaker 1: she was at my premiere and it was just, it
- 10:28Speaker 1: was just cool. And I said, you know, it's, it's
- 10:31Speaker 1: just as cool for me to meet you as for
- 10:32Speaker 1: you to meet me. Like this is, I don't, I
- 10:35Speaker 1: don't see anyone or meet anyone like you, you know?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So yeah, it's, it's cool.
- 10:40Speaker 2: That's a very cool human experience.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 2: You know, just share it with somebody and realize like
- 10:46Speaker 2: you both been through something Pretty horrible, but you came
- 10:49Speaker 2: out on the other side and found comfort in each other.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I think the closest thing that I came to that
- 10:54Speaker 1: was right after my accident and I was out to dinner.
- 10:57Speaker 1: The guy who flew the plane and landed in the river,
- 11:00Speaker 1: remember that?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Sully?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he came up and shook my hand at dinner.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Didn't say a word to me, but I was like, oh,
- 11:06Speaker 1: that's awesome.
- 11:08Speaker 2: That story is fucking crazy.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Birds.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Birds took the plane down. You would think they would
- 11:16Speaker 2: have figured that out by now.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah, the smallest error, you know? It's insane.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Flying's weird, but I prefer it over the boat.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 11:30Speaker 2: The boat thing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You got to do the boat once. Fuck you.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Queen Mary II's wild. There's a morgue on there, too.
- 11:35Speaker 2: What?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah, most people that are on there are 80 years old,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and they're doing their one transatlantic crossing.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And so some of them die?
- 11:42Speaker 1: A lot of them. there's a lot of, I think
- 11:45Speaker 1: every transatlantic crossing, cause I'm on there with my crew
- 11:48Speaker 1: and my, my assistant, my tour manager. It's like, yep, someone.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Passed, you know? Wow. A morgue on the boat, a
- 11:56Speaker 2: morgue on the boat.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It's a must. There's a morgue, a jail, a jail. Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 1: There's a jail.
- 12:02Speaker 2: How many people are on the Queen Mary too?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Thousands. Whoa. Yeah. I mean, if someone pops off on
- 12:07Speaker 1: the boat, they got it, you know, there's, there's police.
- 12:09Speaker 1: It's legit. It's legit.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Um, Wow.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And the whole experience, they almost celebrate when you're crossing
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Titanic, where the Titanic sits. They're like playing the
- 12:22Speaker 1: movie on the ship. They're announcing it. I was like,
- 12:27Speaker 1: this is just different.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Fuck that. Yeah. Oh, my God.
- 12:32Speaker 1: But it was, honestly, I would practice all day. I
- 12:36Speaker 1: would practice all day. I would run miles across the ship,
- 12:40Speaker 1: just on the outside of the ship. There was a
- 12:42Speaker 1: lot of cool times on the boat as well.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You know, you usually fly to tour. You land. That's
- 12:51Speaker 1: what I do now. And it's like, go. Where I
- 12:54Speaker 1: would just train every day, play drums four hours a day,
- 12:57Speaker 1: run two hours a day. By the time I got
- 13:00Speaker 1: ready to where I was going, I'm like, I'm so
- 13:02Speaker 1: ready for tour. It's like, whatever life throws at me,
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm good.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It's just crazy that Even the Queen Mary 2 getting
- 13:09Speaker 2: across in 10 days, that's got to be like way
- 13:12Speaker 2: faster than the old boats used to do it, right?
- 13:15Speaker 2: I don't know, dude.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You're going so slow. It doesn't even look like you're moving.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Sometimes you're like, are you serious? You don't see shit
- 13:22Speaker 1: for 10 days.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Just water.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Once in a while, you'll start seeing birds when you
- 13:28Speaker 1: know you're getting close to land. But other than that, nothing.
- 13:32Speaker 2: How many times have you done that trip?
- 13:33Speaker 1: Seven.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think I'd rather fly for sure.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It's just the idea of something going wrong in the
- 13:44Speaker 2: middle of the ocean.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I started to think about it. You're fucked.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you're fucked.
- 13:49Speaker 1: There's no place to land a helicopter on there.
- 13:51Speaker 2: How can someone even get to you? It's thousands of
- 13:54Speaker 2: miles out to sea.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah, both suck to me, right? Falling out of the
- 13:58Speaker 1: sky in a plane, crashing into the ocean sucks. Also being...
- 14:03Speaker 1: sinking in a huge ship with thousands of people fending
- 14:06Speaker 1: for their lives sucks.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I've just watched too many boat videos of, like, them
- 14:11Speaker 2: navigating insane waves that look like a building coming at them.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Dude, I was in it.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, we were in it. I think we had, we
- 14:20Speaker 1: lost a couple windows in the ship, and you're basically
- 14:24Speaker 1: confined to your room, but huge, where you just see
- 14:27Speaker 1: the boat go up, and then you go crashing down,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and you're You're four or five days into the trip,
- 14:33Speaker 1: so you're in the middle of your crossing.
- 14:36Speaker 2: What does that feel like?
- 14:37Speaker 1: Sucks.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You're on a giant boat with thousands of people.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Sucks. The internet goes out usually on the boat, and
- 14:44Speaker 1: you're just watching something in your room, just waiting for
- 14:48Speaker 1: everything to get more calm.
- 14:50Speaker 2: How big were these waves?
- 14:52Speaker 1: I think we were in 35-foot waves.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Like this?
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yes. It looks exactly like that.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this freaks me out, man.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 2: It's like when they, this is not that bad.
- 15:06Speaker 1: No, look how much the boat's moving.
- 15:07Speaker 2: This is a hurricane force winds, it says.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like choppy weather. I mean, there's positives, too.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We saw the northern lights from our cruise one time,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and it was like, I've never seen it anywhere else,
- 15:20Speaker 1: but it was beautiful. It was cool.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to make a trip to somewhere like
- 15:25Speaker 2: Norway or wherever you can see it. It's not like this. Yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 2: this is insane.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I almost did that one time. I almost
- 15:31Speaker 1: went on a, not a passenger ship, but a cargo
- 15:35Speaker 1: ship because I was trying to find ways to get
- 15:38Speaker 1: to Australia.
- 15:43Speaker 2: You were going to go to Australia by boat?
- 15:44Speaker 1: You know who told me about it? You know who
- 15:45Speaker 1: else doesn't fly and was on the Queen Mary twice
- 15:48Speaker 1: with me? It was KRS-One.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Really?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yep. He was like, I'm right there with you, Trav.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And I was like, did something happen to you or why?
- 15:59Speaker 1: You're just confined to being on ships? He's like, nah,
- 16:01Speaker 1: I just don't like flying. So him and his family actually,
- 16:05Speaker 1: he had told me about the cargo ship for some
- 16:08Speaker 1: of the other places that didn't have actual cruises.
- 16:11Speaker 2: How long is a boat ride to Australia? Dude, a month.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I think it's a month. I mean, I never went.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I never went. The plane flight is hard enough, 20-something
- 16:21Speaker 1: hours or whatever it is.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, fuck that. Fuck a month. It just makes you
- 16:27Speaker 2: really think about the insane adventure spirit of the people
- 16:32Speaker 2: that just took off on canoes and made it across
- 16:36Speaker 2: the ocean.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah, or those wild ass people that do it by
- 16:39Speaker 1: themselves just here to Hawaii.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of those people. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 16:44Speaker 2: know a dude who just did that. But that's, I mean,
- 16:47Speaker 2: the people back when there was no internet, back when
- 16:51Speaker 2: there was no newspapers or no nothing, like the Polynesian people.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That just got on boats and made it to Hawaii.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Insane. Yeah.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Like, did you have, what was plan B? Yeah. What's,
- 17:06Speaker 2: you know, what do you do if you're out? Where
- 17:08Speaker 2: are you getting water? How are you staying alive?
- 17:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I think plan B is making plan A work.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Plan B.
- 17:14Speaker 2: There is no plan. But how bad does life suck
- 17:18Speaker 2: that you're willing to get in a boat and just
- 17:20Speaker 2: hope there's some food when you land? And they didn't
- 17:25Speaker 2: have big boats either. Yeah. So what the fuck were
- 17:28Speaker 2: the waves like for them? Also, no weather app on
- 17:31Speaker 2: the iPhone.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 2: You have no idea what's coming.
- 17:35Speaker 1: True.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Zero idea what's waiting for you. And, you know, you're
- 17:39Speaker 2: with your family and you're paddling out there.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Yeah. It's the unknown, absolute unknown.
- 17:46Speaker 2: And then how do you get back? Or do you?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Or do you just say, well, this is where we are?
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean, it must have taken months and months and
- 17:51Speaker 2: months to get out there. How do they stay alive?
- 17:55Speaker 2: Human ingenuity, like people's ability to thrive and survive is
- 18:00Speaker 2: pretty insane when pushed to the limits.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Like people, I have a friend who fasts half
- 18:07Speaker 1: of the year. He's just drinking juice and water.
- 18:10Speaker 2: For six months?
- 18:12Speaker 1: 160 days a year. He does it every year. How?
- 18:15Speaker 2: How?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Chef Edo. He's a chef. He's actually a chef that
- 18:23Speaker 1: took a vow of silence 30 years ago. A plant-based
- 18:28Speaker 1: raw chef. And for half of the year, he doesn't eat.
- 18:32Speaker 1: He just fasts. And it's more for like health reasons,
- 18:36Speaker 1: like cleansing and to prevent disease, whatever else. But he
- 18:42Speaker 1: gets really thin and then just goes back to his
- 18:45Speaker 1: normal weight the second half of the year.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I don't know if that's good.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I don't know either.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Who told him that's good?
- 18:52Speaker 1: He does it every year. He might not even be good.
- 18:57Speaker 1: He just does these things.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think it is.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Half of the year fasting.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I don't think it's good. This episode is brought to

- 20:00Speaker 2: that just eating nothing but juice for six months is
- 20:04Speaker 2: good for you.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Yeah. I have a hard enough time fasting a day
- 20:08Speaker 1: before surgery or something, you know?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Well, it's all dependent upon whether or not your body's
- 20:13Speaker 2: eating a lot of carbohydrates or not.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 2: If you're on a ketogenic diet, it's a lot easier.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Your body just immediately goes to burning fat and your
- 20:21Speaker 2: appetite is not as strong. It's not as insane a pull,
- 20:25Speaker 2: the gravity of it. But I can't even imagine why
- 20:28Speaker 2: you would do that. Fast for six months. I think
- 20:32Speaker 2: there's a lot of data that shows that fasting for
- 20:35Speaker 2: three days and five days and things along those lines
- 20:37Speaker 2: is good. Causes autophagy, makes your body clean out bad cells.
- 20:41Speaker 2: It's very good for people that are recovering from cancer
- 20:45Speaker 2: or going through cancer. It's one of the first things
- 20:48Speaker 2: a lot of doctors tell you. Get on a ketogenic
- 20:50Speaker 2: diet and fast because cancer cells want glucose. That's what
- 20:56Speaker 2: they want to survive, and you starve them.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 20:59Speaker 2: And when your body's like on a– you're still on
- 21:02Speaker 2: a plant-based diet. So your body's eating mostly carbohydrates all
- 21:06Speaker 2: the time. So you have to kind of refuel all
- 21:09Speaker 2: the time. It gets used to it. So when someone
- 21:11Speaker 2: like you takes a day off of food, it's like
- 21:14Speaker 2: the pull of the carbohydrates, like the insulin dump. It's
- 21:17Speaker 2: a lot.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean I eat so much protein though. I
- 21:20Speaker 1: get so much protein from lentils, like an insane amount
- 21:23Speaker 1: of protein from lentils, beans.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:26Speaker 1: All the natural stuff, not mock meats. So all my
- 21:31Speaker 1: blood work that I do, my protein is top notch.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Oh, that's awesome.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I've figured it out, though, too. There's a lot
- 21:41Speaker 1: of junk food meat eaters, a lot of junk food vegans.
- 21:45Speaker 1: It's about dialing your shit in, you know what I mean,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and figuring it out.
- 21:49Speaker 2: But even you, when you were recovering from your burns,
- 21:51Speaker 2: you started eating meat.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Well, because I had doctors that were super old school
- 21:56Speaker 1: in the, in the, in the hospital with me that
- 22:00Speaker 1: figured out I wasn't eating because they were trying to
- 22:04Speaker 1: feed me a bunch of meat and they stuck a
- 22:06Speaker 1: hose down my throat and that's just sucked.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So they stuck a hose down your throat.
- 22:11Speaker 1: To like feed you like that because I was like
- 22:13Speaker 1: secretly just eating kind of like what I wanted, but
- 22:16Speaker 1: not eating a bunch of the meat because I told them, Hey,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I don't, I don't really eat meat. Um, So there
- 22:23Speaker 1: was like a miscommunication where they just put a hose
- 22:26Speaker 1: down my throat and were feeding me like that. And
- 22:29Speaker 1: then during that time, one of my nurses was super
- 22:32Speaker 1: cool and he started making me bags of beef jerky.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So I would eat beef jerky in the hospital to
- 22:39Speaker 1: get whatever protein that they wanted me to have. And
- 22:42Speaker 1: then down a peanut butter blast smoothie from, what is that?
- 22:48Speaker 1: Is it Robux or something like that? Like one of
- 22:50Speaker 1: those and it's 3,000 calories. So I was averaging. Basically,
- 22:55Speaker 1: I had a 6,000 to 7,000 calorie diet I needed
- 22:58Speaker 1: to hit every day.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:01Speaker 1: In order to heal. Because I just had 30 surgeries
- 23:04Speaker 1: in six months. So it was just trying to get enough.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Just 30 times being anesthetized for six months is fucking
- 23:14Speaker 2: hard on your body.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I was.
- 23:18Speaker 1: So out of it, I didn't really... No, until towards
- 23:22Speaker 1: the end, you know? But.
- 23:27Speaker 2: But yeah. Jeez, man.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Did you ever try using a hyperbaric chamber? I couldn't
- 23:33Speaker 4: do it after... You know, my best friend that was
- 23:37Speaker 4: in the accident with me, A.M., he was... I.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Think 6% of his body was burnt. And he went
- 23:46Speaker 1: in the hyperbaric and... I think he had a small
- 23:50Speaker 1: graft on the back of his head. He was out
- 23:52Speaker 1: of the hospital in a week and a half. Uh,
- 23:55Speaker 1: but I had 70% of my body burnt. So there
- 23:58Speaker 1: was no way I was getting out of the hospital,
- 24:00Speaker 1: no matter how much I did it or didn't do it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I tried doing it and I was just in such
- 24:05Speaker 1: a awful place after my, my accident where I was,
- 24:11Speaker 1: I had so much trauma, uh, with like losing my,
- 24:14Speaker 1: my best friends. And I was I was definitely, my
- 24:18Speaker 1: reaction was much different than Adam's. And I couldn't go
- 24:24Speaker 1: on the small tube. There was no way. I think
- 24:28Speaker 1: at the time it reminded me too much of the
- 24:30Speaker 1: inside of the plane.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Really? Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I just felt really claustrophobic. And I was also having
- 24:37Speaker 1: a hell of a time. A.M. was sober. Sober for
- 24:41Speaker 1: 15 years when it happened. I was a drug addict.
- 24:45Speaker 1: you know, before my plane crash. And you take a
- 24:50Speaker 1: person who's self-medicating, put them through 30 surgeries, give them
- 24:53Speaker 1: a bunch of pain meds, and they're not working. That
- 24:55Speaker 1: was me. So I was waking up every surgery, screaming,
- 25:00Speaker 1: swinging on doctors, a complete madman, you know, until they
- 25:07Speaker 1: weaned me off. And by the time I got out
- 25:09Speaker 1: of there, I was, I never wanted to, put anything
- 25:14Speaker 1: in my body again and uh had a great relationship
- 25:18Speaker 1: with all my doctors and dr grossman who owns the
- 25:20Speaker 1: burn center the grossman burn center it was uh yeah
- 25:24Speaker 1: it was full circle.
- 25:27Speaker 2: But that's a crazy trial by fire to get off drugs.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yeah that was my that was my that was my rehab.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Wow fuck dude That has to mean you're confined to
- 25:40Speaker 2: a bed, you're stuck, they're giving you pain medications, you're
- 25:44Speaker 2: going through 30 surgeries, you have 70% of your body burnt,
- 25:47Speaker 2: your friends just died, and you're in this hospital by yourself.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Huge wake-up call.
- 25:53Speaker 2: What a fucking, what a wild ride your mind must
- 25:57Speaker 2: have been going through.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, you know, I was coming home from a show.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I was coming home from a gig. Yeah, who would
- 26:08Speaker 1: think you, get in a plane, coming home from a show,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and you're going to end up in a burn center
- 26:16Speaker 1: for six months. Four people are gone, and 70% of
- 26:21Speaker 1: your body's burnt. It takes a minute to process.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Why did they think you were never going to be
- 26:27Speaker 2: able to play the drums again?
- 26:29Speaker 1: Well, there was a point where they were going to
- 26:31Speaker 1: amputate my foot, because they didn't think they could... They
- 26:36Speaker 1: had enough skin left to... to heal my foot or
- 26:40Speaker 1: save it. And then because of the amount of burns
- 26:46Speaker 1: I had over my body, they weren't, they weren't positive
- 26:51Speaker 1: I was even going to make it. So it was
- 26:54Speaker 1: like once they knew I was out of critical condition
- 26:56Speaker 1: and I was going to make it, they were, you know,
- 26:59Speaker 1: all my nerves were messed up in my hands. Like
- 27:01Speaker 1: my ulnar nerve was shot in both hands. My hands
- 27:04Speaker 1: were numb. There was a lot of, it's just the unknown.
- 27:09Speaker 2: You know, I can only imagine. I think it sucks
- 27:14Speaker 2: that you couldn't use the hyperbaric because it definitely accelerates healing. Yeah.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Even now I go in, I go in sometimes now
- 27:20Speaker 1: there's a hyperbaric in Los Angeles that seats two people
- 27:24Speaker 1: and that's perfect for me. It's just like I could
- 27:27Speaker 1: stay in there for two hours and I'm fine.
- 27:31Speaker 2: It's just a confined space thing for you.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I just don't love being in confined spaces.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't love it either, but I do it.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:37Speaker 2: But I've never been through.
- 27:39Speaker 1: What you've been through. You know what the mind fuck is?
- 27:41Speaker 1: Is the time it takes to depressurize it. So even
- 27:44Speaker 1: if you're like, okay, I'm done, like seven minutes, eight minutes, whatever,
- 27:48Speaker 1: while we depressurize it, I think that's why I just
- 27:51Speaker 1: feel better in the two-seater.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. Fuck, dude. Now, when you're
- 27:58Speaker 2: doing this documentary, does it relive all this stuff for you?
- 28:02Speaker 1: Every time.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I was so excited to come on, on this with you.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Cause I'm like, I'm going to talk fights with Joe.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'm going to talk whatever cars, um, some of them
- 28:15Speaker 1: have been, uh, I mean, they've all been great, but
- 28:19Speaker 1: I mean, to tell the truth, I think since I'm
- 28:22Speaker 1: not sure why, but maybe since I was a kid,
- 28:25Speaker 1: you know, I lost my mom at a young age,
- 28:26Speaker 1: like 13, like I could, a stranger could come up
- 28:30Speaker 1: to me outside this place and be like, dude, I
- 28:31Speaker 1: just lost my dad, and I'd probably start bawling because
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's sensitive to me. It, like, triggers something to me. So, yeah,
- 28:39Speaker 1: it's like talking about certain parts of the doc is, like,
- 28:43Speaker 1: gutting me with a knife, you know?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Were you conflicted as to whether or not you wanted
- 28:48Speaker 2: to go through with this and relive all that stuff?
- 28:52Speaker 1: I think I was already far past it. It was
- 28:55Speaker 1: to the point where my doc was done in 2017
- 28:58Speaker 1: but i'm like there's no ending the ending sucks i
- 29:01Speaker 1: won't look at a plane i won't do anything and
- 29:04Speaker 1: then fast forward you know that was their dream ending
- 29:08Speaker 1: just stare at a fucking plane for me right and
- 29:11Speaker 1: i'm like nah you know um so and then fast
- 29:14Speaker 1: forward to now 2024 or whatever it was when i
- 29:17Speaker 1: flew or 2025 it was like yo i fly i
- 29:21Speaker 1: fly again my kids fly uh i'm married i'm Um,
- 29:25Speaker 1: there like so many things have changed and that kind
- 29:28Speaker 1: of triggered me to finish it because there was a
- 29:32Speaker 1: huge light at the end of the tunnel now.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:34Speaker 1: It was like, yeah, I had this thing that had
- 29:36Speaker 1: power for me for 20 years, but I fly again. And, uh, and.
- 29:40Speaker 1: think the other parts of the doc, like an amazing,
- 29:44Speaker 1: like rough relationship with my dad when I was younger
- 29:47Speaker 1: turned into something like beautiful where he's like my best friend.
- 29:52Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I grew up, you know, not, We didn't even have
- 29:59Speaker 1: running hot water in my house. So it wasn't like
- 30:02Speaker 1: my dad was in the music industry and my mom
- 30:05Speaker 1: was an agent. It was like, no, I fucking didn't
- 30:09Speaker 1: know how I was going to get out of where
- 30:10Speaker 1: I grew up. And I just played every day and
- 30:13Speaker 1: I was relentless. And I joined every band and I
- 30:16Speaker 1: played with everyone and I practiced two to five hours
- 30:20Speaker 1: a day. So just even giving some kid hope, knowing
- 30:24Speaker 1: that he can do the same thing, was.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Was like a big part of my documentary that I
- 30:30Speaker 1: felt like could help a lot of people.
- 30:31Speaker 2: For sure.
- 30:32Speaker 1: And then just to see me get knocked down and
- 30:36Speaker 1: just have to fight over and over again when fucked
- 30:40Speaker 1: up things happen to me and just watching me have
- 30:47Speaker 1: these things just make me stronger and stronger and unbreakable.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I think that's the resilience. I think that that is
- 30:55Speaker 1: something for... for people to see. Yeah.
- 30:58Speaker 2: There's two great messages in there. The big one is
- 31:01Speaker 2: that you can overcome that no matter how fucked up
- 31:04Speaker 2: things are, if you keep going and if you keep,
- 31:07Speaker 2: you stay positive, you do the right thing, you trust
- 31:09Speaker 2: the process at the end of it, you'll come out better. Yeah.
- 31:12Speaker 2: And then you're the formula for success is the same formula.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Almost everyone has that is really awesome at something, become obsessed,
- 31:21Speaker 2: become driven and just throw everything you have in that thing.
- 31:25Speaker 2: And you come out better. And you eventually get to
- 31:28Speaker 2: where you want to be or get to where you are.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It's an undeniable formula. And kids need to hear that.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Especially kids in this world where everybody thinks everything comes quick.
- 31:39Speaker 2: And everybody wants a, you know, it's a TikTok mindset.
- 31:42Speaker 2: And everybody wants a pill to lose weight. The process
- 31:47Speaker 2: is the most important thing. And just becoming obsessed and
- 31:51Speaker 2: in love with the process.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Yeah. And so many people, I don't know, there's not
- 31:57Speaker 1: a lot of balance, right? Like I've found more balance now,
- 32:00Speaker 1: but it's like, no, you've got to be fucking obsessed
- 32:03Speaker 1: and you've got to be relentless and you've got to,
- 32:06Speaker 1: while all your homies are out doing whatever, you should
- 32:08Speaker 1: be practicing. You know what I mean? You've got to
- 32:10Speaker 1: be disciplined. Like I'm so, you know, my parents were,
- 32:15Speaker 1: they were really strict with me. Like, yo, if you
- 32:17Speaker 1: want to go skateboarding, you want to go ride BMX bikes,
- 32:19Speaker 1: go whatever, fuck off with your friends, you've got to
- 32:21Speaker 1: go play drums for three hours. I'm so thankful they
- 32:24Speaker 1: did that. Can you imagine if they didn't? Because the
- 32:27Speaker 1: one thing also in my doc is every time my
- 32:30Speaker 1: mom dies, what do I do? I just throw myself
- 32:33Speaker 1: into music and drumming. Obsessed with drumming. Join marching band, orchestra,
- 32:39Speaker 1: jazz band. Just literally eat, sleep, and breathe it. Same
- 32:45Speaker 1: thing after my accident. What did I do? Day I
- 32:47Speaker 1: got home, I'm outside with scabs all over my body
- 32:50Speaker 1: and I'm playing the fucking drums. Cause it's like what
- 32:53Speaker 1: I know. And also I think for kids, even that
- 32:57Speaker 1: don't have to hopefully endure anything I encountered, it's like,
- 33:01Speaker 1: it gives you confidence when you're good at something. It's
- 33:03Speaker 1: like when, I don't know anything. I think when kids
- 33:07Speaker 1: bully you and whatever else, if you're good at something,
- 33:09Speaker 1: you're like, fuck you. Like, I know I'm really good
- 33:13Speaker 1: at football. I'm really good at jujitsu. I'm really good
- 33:15Speaker 1: at Guitar, I feel like it just gives you confidence. 100%.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And helps you just kind of navigate through life better.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 1: You know?
- 33:24Speaker 2: It's a vehicle for developing you as a human being. Totally.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Whatever it is, whether it's art, whether it's music, whether
- 33:30Speaker 2: it's literature, whatever you're doing, writing, whatever you're doing. Yeah. Carpentry,
- 33:35Speaker 2: whatever it is. Just become obsessed with a thing. get
- 33:38Speaker 2: better at it, and you realize that, okay, there's a process.
- 33:42Speaker 2: I can get better at things. I'm valuable. I can
- 33:46Speaker 2: do something.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I'm not just a lazy sack of shit.
- 33:50Speaker 1: The problem is the masses aren't like that, right? So, like,
- 33:52Speaker 1: sometimes you feel lonely being like that.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 1: But, yeah, I feel like, have you ever read Relentless
- 33:59Speaker 1: by Tim Grover? No. Fuck, it's my Bible. But I
- 34:04Speaker 1: just had my premiere in L.A. and he introduced my doc.
- 34:07Speaker 2: What is it?
- 34:09Speaker 1: It's a book and he basically talks about being a cooler, closer,
- 34:13Speaker 1: a cleaner, you know? And like cleaners are like people
- 34:18Speaker 1: like you and I that are obsessed with shit. And,
- 34:21Speaker 1: you know, if we won a Grammy today, we're not
- 34:24Speaker 1: going to like party for the next week. We're like,
- 34:25Speaker 1: what's next? You know, what's next? We're not, we're on
- 34:29Speaker 1: vacation and we're practicing and we're not feeling bad about it. We're,
- 34:33Speaker 1: it's just, it's a mindset that not a lot of
- 34:37Speaker 1: people have and that must make you feel like you're
- 34:40Speaker 1: doing something wrong because you're so obsessed with something.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, well people will make you feel like there's
- 34:45Speaker 2: something wrong with you.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Like, and I've, and it took me a while. Honestly,
- 34:50Speaker 1: after I read his book, I'm like, Oh, I'm not alone.
- 34:52Speaker 1: There's a bunch of fucking psychopaths like me that just,
- 34:56Speaker 1: I love the fucking drums. I love to make music.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I could stay in the studio for 25 hours, you know? Um, and,
- 35:04Speaker 1: and I don't feel burnt out and it makes me
- 35:06Speaker 1: feel alive and it's, therapeutic and I always, I'm never
- 35:11Speaker 1: content with where I'm at. I always know I have
- 35:13Speaker 1: room to grow. I know there's things I can get
- 35:15Speaker 1: better at. Um, yeah, there's, and then there's like, you know,
- 35:20Speaker 1: there's people that are very content just being like, I'm
- 35:24Speaker 1: not going to get any better. I'm just, I'm cool
- 35:26Speaker 1: with where I'm at. I know this is kind of
- 35:27Speaker 1: peak level for me. I can never think like that. Yeah.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I mean, I guess that's just how it has to be.
- 35:36Speaker 2: In order for there to be outliers, there's always going
- 35:39Speaker 2: to be people that just, for whatever reason, never follow through,
- 35:44Speaker 2: never do what they really want to do. What is
- 35:48Speaker 2: that Thoreau comment, the Thoreau quote, most men live lives
- 35:52Speaker 2: of quiet desperation. There's a lot of that. There's a
- 35:56Speaker 2: lot of people that wish that. They wish they had
- 35:59Speaker 2: the energy or the inspiration or the discipline or whatever
- 36:03Speaker 2: it is to do the thing that they want to do,
- 36:06Speaker 2: to get up and just to do something that really
- 36:10Speaker 2: brings them joy, really brings them excitement, really makes them
- 36:14Speaker 2: feel fulfilled, really ignites that creative fire inside of them
- 36:20Speaker 2: where you do something and it's done. You're like, fuck yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 2: There's a lot of people that never experience fuck yeah.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It's a rough life.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I feel like that's the journey. Find that. Or like
- 36:31Speaker 1: that quote, find something you love and figure out a
- 36:34Speaker 1: way to get paid for it. That's great. But I think, yeah,
- 36:38Speaker 1: things like that have just, especially after my accident, I'm like, yo,
- 36:42Speaker 1: life is short.
- 36:45Speaker 2: And it can go at any time.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It can go any time.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I've learned.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I've been smacked in the face over and over again. Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 1: And just always feeling like, I remember there was this
- 36:56Speaker 1: guy named Harry Shannon that was very instrumental in helping
- 37:01Speaker 1: me get sober or me trying to get sober before
- 37:03Speaker 1: my accident when I got sober. And he's like, I
- 37:06Speaker 1: have to ask men, if you died right now, would
- 37:08Speaker 1: you be the man you'd want people to remember you by?
- 37:11Speaker 1: And I'm like, I need to get to that place.
- 37:15Speaker 1: That's just where I want to sit. That's where I
- 37:17Speaker 1: want to live.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Well, I always tell people, live your life as if
- 37:22Speaker 2: there's a documentary crew following you around. And you're doing
- 37:26Speaker 2: something awesome. Like if you wanted to be inspired by
- 37:29Speaker 2: somebody and watch a documentary on somebody doing something, just
- 37:33Speaker 2: someone who's like, wow, that fucking dude's getting after it.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Be that person in real life. The other thing I
- 37:38Speaker 2: always tell people, become the person you pretend to be
- 37:41Speaker 2: when you're trying to get laid.
- 37:43Speaker 1: It's so funny. Or who you're pretending to be on
- 37:46Speaker 1: the internet or social media.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Just actually become that person. It's so much easier than pretending.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Because there's obviously someone that's like that. That's why we
- 37:55Speaker 2: understand the archetype. That's why we understand this very exceptional person.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So become that person. You can do it. Anybody can
- 38:03Speaker 2: do it. We all change and grow. And that's what
- 38:05Speaker 2: I think is really important about people like you telling
- 38:08Speaker 2: your story. is that there's a lot of young people
- 38:11Speaker 2: out there that don't have anybody like you in their life,
- 38:13Speaker 2: and they can see it and relate to you, and
- 38:15Speaker 2: it gives them fuel. Your story and just you talking
- 38:21Speaker 2: about things passionately can change a young person's life. There's
- 38:25Speaker 2: a young girl or a young guy out there that
- 38:27Speaker 2: can hear you, and just your story makes them take
- 38:31Speaker 2: a step. makes them go in the right direction, makes
- 38:34Speaker 2: them make a move to something. We all need something
- 38:37Speaker 2: from other people. We feed off of other people's energy.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel that. Like, it's like when people see
- 38:43Speaker 1: David Goggins for the first time and you're like, oh,
- 38:46Speaker 1: I'm going to get after it. I'm going to get,
- 38:47Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like, that's important. Yeah, and
- 38:50Speaker 1: I didn't know. I said, you know, I've watched my
- 38:52Speaker 1: doc like 15, 20 times now and I just, I
- 38:55Speaker 1: even watched it the other day at the premiere and
- 38:57Speaker 1: I'm like holding back tears and I'm like, fuck, it's
- 39:01Speaker 1: so heavy, you know? Um, but just the reaction from
- 39:05Speaker 1: everyone is like, yo, that changed my life. Like I
- 39:10Speaker 1: can't look at life the same. And I'm like, if anything, that's,
- 39:14Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 2: You know, we all need that.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I'd hate to put out. Also, it's not like I
- 39:18Speaker 1: made my own documentary. Um, but I was honored and flattered.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Someone wanted to do this documentary with me, but like,
- 39:25Speaker 1: hate to put out something that doesn't help people.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:28Speaker 1: You know? Right.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Yeah. water right here yeah yeah there's a glass right
- 39:32Speaker 2: in front of you there.
- 39:33Speaker 1: You go I ran what is it called Lake Austin
- 39:36Speaker 1: uh huh Lady Bird I ran it today yeah.
- 39:38Speaker 2: It's dope so nice isn't it beautiful so beautiful this
- 39:42Speaker 2: is such a great place if I.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Lived here I would be out there every day and
- 39:45Speaker 1: tons of people running I.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Know so cool there's a lot of healthy people in
- 39:49Speaker 2: this town.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And I didn't, my goal was to just wake up
- 39:52Speaker 1: and walk. I went to like this good espresso spot
- 39:55Speaker 1: that has like Cortados, had a coffee. And then I
- 39:59Speaker 1: have like long shorts on, like sweat shorts, cut off sweats,
- 40:02Speaker 1: suicidal tendency sweats and high socks and just regular shoes.
- 40:06Speaker 1: And where I come from, where I grew up was
- 40:08Speaker 1: called the Inland Empire. Like, and I'm like, oh my God,
- 40:11Speaker 1: I look so Inland Empire right here. No shirt, long
- 40:14Speaker 1: ass sweats, suicidal tendencies. Like he's not from here, you know?
- 40:18Speaker 1: But I'm like, hey, I'm here with you guys. Yeah.
- 40:20Speaker 2: But you blend right in. Everybody blends in here. This
- 40:22Speaker 2: is a very blend in town.
- 40:24Speaker 1: I love Austin.
- 40:25Speaker 2: It's great. It's cool. Yeah. But that lake is a
- 40:28Speaker 2: really fun spot. And again, very inspirational too, because there's
- 40:32Speaker 2: a lot of people getting after it. Yeah. A lot
- 40:34Speaker 2: of people that look good. They look healthy.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Yeah. It was like, I don't know. Honestly, I was surprised. Really?
- 40:40Speaker 1: From the moment I touched down yesterday, just walking, like
- 40:44Speaker 1: my wife and Rocky, we just went walking and there was,
- 40:47Speaker 1: everyone was running even yesterday. And then today it was
- 40:50Speaker 1: like similar to when that feeling where you in LA,
- 40:54Speaker 1: where you have like those boot camps or whatever, but
- 40:57Speaker 1: there's no organized boot camp. There's just people out there
- 41:00Speaker 1: getting after it.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:02Speaker 1: I love, I love being around that.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Well, this is a very fit town. I mean, it's
- 41:06Speaker 2: become the jujitsu hub of the country. Really? Yeah. It's
- 41:10Speaker 2: kind of crazy. And it all happened during the pandemic.
- 41:12Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot of things that changed about
- 41:14Speaker 2: this place because people got sick of whatever the restrictions
- 41:17Speaker 2: were for where they lived, whether it was New York
- 41:19Speaker 2: or LA, and they came here. And a lot, well,
- 41:22Speaker 2: it started out with Gordon Ryan, Gordon Ryan and John Donaher,
- 41:25Speaker 2: who are the like, Gordon's the greatest jujitsu athlete.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Of all time.
- 41:29Speaker 2: And he moved here and John Donaher is the greatest
- 41:31Speaker 2: coach of all time. And he moved here and they
- 41:32Speaker 2: set up shop. And then all the guys they train
- 41:35Speaker 2: with came here. And then a ton of other people
- 41:38Speaker 2: just moved here and started up schools too. So there's,
- 41:41Speaker 2: A ton of jiu-jitsu going on here. A ton of
- 41:44Speaker 2: MMA going on here. There's gyms everywhere. All these functional
- 41:47Speaker 2: fitness gyms. It's like a feeling here. There's an energy
- 41:52Speaker 2: of people that want to do something. They want to
- 41:55Speaker 2: be active. They want to be excited about something. They
- 41:58Speaker 2: want to make something happen. And I think a lot
- 42:01Speaker 2: of that was accentuated by the fact that this town
- 42:04Speaker 2: became like a symbol of change for them. Like, wherever
- 42:09Speaker 2: the fuck I used to live before, now I'm going
- 42:11Speaker 2: to move to this new thing. And I'm going to
- 42:13Speaker 2: really take advantage of the fact that this is different.
- 42:16Speaker 2: That this place is different. This is my new place.
- 42:18Speaker 2: This is my new feeling of my life. It's a
- 42:21Speaker 2: new environment. And then all these other people that moved
- 42:24Speaker 2: here have this similar desire to, like, excel and make
- 42:29Speaker 2: their life more exciting. And just, it's an awesome place.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel that. I think you usually see it
- 42:34Speaker 1: in New York or L.A., but you see it here.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Everyone's in shape or it's like, feels like it's a head.
- 42:42Speaker 1: You know?
- 42:44Speaker 2: There's energy here. Yeah. And there's energy here because of
- 42:46Speaker 2: the people that moved here. You know, when we opened
- 42:49Speaker 2: up the comedy club, I mean, we all came here
- 42:52Speaker 2: because there was nowhere we could perform in LA. LA
- 42:55Speaker 2: was locked down for comedy. And just like you playing
- 42:58Speaker 2: the drums and doing music, comedians are addicted. They're addicted
- 43:02Speaker 2: to performing. They're addicted to writing. They're addicted to like,
- 43:05Speaker 2: and a lot of these guys were young people who
- 43:08Speaker 2: where their career just was shut off. And, you know,
- 43:11Speaker 2: they're in their 20s and they're pursuing their dream and
- 43:14Speaker 2: they're barely getting by. They're making no fucking money. But
- 43:17Speaker 2: they're in Hollywood. They're at the comedy store. And also
- 43:19Speaker 2: the comedy store is closed for a year and a half.
- 43:22Speaker 2: It was fucking nuts. And so when we came out here,
- 43:26Speaker 2: you know, it started off, it was Ron White and
- 43:28Speaker 2: then me and Tony Hinchcliffe. And then it was like
- 43:31Speaker 2: we lit the fire. Come on. And then next thing
- 43:35Speaker 2: you know, there's like, 20 world-class comedians moved to Austin.
- 43:40Speaker 2: And we set up the club. And then now there's
- 43:43Speaker 2: five clubs on my street, on the street where my
- 43:45Speaker 2: club is. There's five other clubs there. It's crazy. There's
- 43:49Speaker 2: so many comics here. And it's just exploding with creativity
- 43:53Speaker 2: and enthusiasm and momentum. There's like so much momentum. Cam Patterson,
- 43:58Speaker 2: who came out of here, just got SNL. Shane Gillis
- 44:01Speaker 2: obviously just became the biggest comic in the world. And
- 44:03Speaker 2: it's all, Kill Tony's the biggest live comedy show in
- 44:06Speaker 2: the world. That's out of my club. It's so wild, yeah.
- 44:07Speaker 2: It's all like.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Oh, that's out of your club?
- 44:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Every Monday it's out of my club.
- 44:10Speaker 1: I get all the clippings from it all the time.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And I'm like, he's so funny. Also, I saw Ron
- 44:18Speaker 1: White and Shane Gillis at the Netflix Sucks.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Oh, right.
- 44:22Speaker 1: At the Hollywood Bowl.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:23Speaker 1: So good.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I worked with Ron last night.
- 44:27Speaker 1: He's great.
- 44:28Speaker 2: He's the best.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Shane Gillis is my favorite, obviously. He's so funny.
- 44:32Speaker 2: He's the best.
- 44:33Speaker 1: He doesn't even have to say anything, just his face.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Well, he's just a great guy. Like, you just love,
- 44:38Speaker 2: when you're around him, you're having fun.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:40Speaker 2: He's just a big, he's a big smile.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:43Speaker 2: You know?
- 44:44Speaker 1: I could imagine.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:45Speaker 1: They were like, hey, do you want to go meet
- 44:47Speaker 1: him before the thing? I'm like, no, no, no, I'm okay.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I'm like, I just want to watch his show.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Like, yeah. I'm sure he'd love to meet you yeah
- 44:55Speaker 2: it's just having a place where a bunch of like-minded
- 44:59Speaker 2: people are trying to do the same thing is so
- 45:01Speaker 2: important and if you don't have that in your life
- 45:03Speaker 2: that's what I was talking about like your story and
- 45:05Speaker 2: your documentary and just hearing you talk about stuff is
- 45:08Speaker 2: so important for people because we all need other people
- 45:11Speaker 2: that are doing a similar thing or at least doing
- 45:15Speaker 2: a thing that we wish we were doing that it
- 45:17Speaker 2: gives us and it might not be for them it
- 45:19Speaker 2: might not be playing the drums it might be painting
- 45:21Speaker 2: it might be something else but it's like oh, that
- 45:24Speaker 2: guy has that feeling about drums the way I have
- 45:27Speaker 2: this feeling about playing guitar, or I have this feeling
- 45:30Speaker 2: about drawing pictures, whatever the fuck it is. It's like
- 45:33Speaker 2: you need to know that this feeling that you have
- 45:36Speaker 2: inside of you and wanting to do something special is
- 45:38Speaker 2: not unique. There's other people that have it. You just
- 45:41Speaker 2: have to find them. You have to find those people.
- 45:43Speaker 2: And if they're not around you, at least now we
- 45:46Speaker 2: have this amazing ability to connect with these people through
- 45:49Speaker 2: the internet. It's incredible.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like they say, like, you are who you–
- 45:54Speaker 1: the closest five people that are around you.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yep.
- 45:57Speaker 1: It's like the same thing.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Completely true. Completely true.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel that too, and they don't have to
- 46:02Speaker 1: be doing exactly what you're doing. Yeah, I'm like– in
- 46:06Speaker 1: our old neighborhood where– because were you on Khalifa? Yes. Okay,
- 46:10Speaker 1: so I'm on Khalifa, you know. I moved my studio.
- 46:13Speaker 1: You literally left.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Like COVID hit, you left, and I moved in over there.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I heard. So– I wonder how.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Close we were, too. Well, I think we were real close. Really?
- 46:23Speaker 2: I think we were right down the street from each other.
- 46:25Speaker 1: So even just being in that neighborhood, like, I run
- 46:29Speaker 1: a lot in there, right? And one day I was running.
- 46:31Speaker 1: It was so weird. I think I saw your pod,
- 46:34Speaker 1: and Gene Jacques was on it, right?
- 46:36Speaker 2: Jean-Jacques Machado.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Yeah, Jean-Jacques Machado. And then maybe two days later, I'm
- 46:44Speaker 1: at Blue Bottle grabbing a coffee, and him and all
- 46:47Speaker 1: his boys from his gym go up there like, hey,
- 46:50Speaker 1: come train. come train. And I'm like, okay. And then
- 46:53Speaker 1: the next day I'm running and I don't even know
- 46:55Speaker 1: where his spot is and I'm running. And then there's his,
- 46:58Speaker 1: his dojo, like, you know, his gym. And, uh, and
- 47:01Speaker 1: I just walked in and started training, but being around
- 47:03Speaker 1: him and like his story, like being around people who
- 47:06Speaker 1: have inspiring stories and are motivating and, and are, are
- 47:11Speaker 1: productive and are hungry and, you know, it's the biggest,
- 47:16Speaker 1: the biggest difference in the world.
- 47:18Speaker 2: John Jock is an awesome soul. He's an awesome guy.
- 47:21Speaker 1: What a great guy. Yeah.
- 47:22Speaker 2: I started training with him in 1998.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Wow.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I was training a lot and then, uh, was also
- 47:32Speaker 1: running a bunch and I tweaked my, my leg. Uh,
- 47:36Speaker 1: and I kind of learned, I think like me running
- 47:38Speaker 1: all the time, uh, it wasn't the best for jujitsu.
- 47:43Speaker 2: No. You need some strength training for jujitsu.
- 47:46Speaker 1: So now, now it's a good balance, but, um.
- 47:49Speaker 2: What do you do for strength training?
- 47:51Speaker 1: It's tricky. I used to just work out. If I
- 47:55Speaker 1: was here, I'd find someone, I'd work out with them
- 47:57Speaker 1: or have friends I'd work out with or trainers back home.
- 48:01Speaker 1: But a lot of people see me and they're like, bro,
- 48:03Speaker 1: let's get you jacked. Well, that's not functional for me.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Not functional for drums. I need to be fucking fast.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 48:11Speaker 1: And I need to be... fluid and yeah. So a
- 48:15Speaker 1: lot of people, I figured out after years and years
- 48:18Speaker 1: and years of, of working out with different people, what's
- 48:21Speaker 1: best for me is, is fast twitch and lots of reps, uh,
- 48:29Speaker 1: lots of sprints, quick explosive energy. I love boxing, love
- 48:33Speaker 1: jump roping. Um, And then a few days is more
- 48:38Speaker 1: like slow strength training, but only followed by, like, I
- 48:41Speaker 1: have to finish with something fast, whether it's 10 rounds
- 48:45Speaker 1: on the bag or whatever else. Or I literally, I
- 48:49Speaker 1: remember there was a tour and I was working out
- 48:50Speaker 1: with someone and we hadn't yet figured it out. We
- 48:54Speaker 1: work out still together and we do, we do something
- 48:56Speaker 1: called tempo training. So whatever music is on, you're doing
- 48:59Speaker 1: it to the tempo. You're doing it for the length
- 49:01Speaker 1: of the song. So it's much longer than you would
- 49:04Speaker 1: normally do something. And it's much quicker than you normally
- 49:07Speaker 1: do something. But that's how I play the drums. And
- 49:10Speaker 1: that's going to help me once I go back to
- 49:14Speaker 1: what I do and it's functional for what I do.
- 49:16Speaker 1: But when I wasn't doing that, and I was just
- 49:19Speaker 1: throwing around heavy weights, and I was putting on muscle,
- 49:21Speaker 1: I got behind a kit, and I remember I hadn't
- 49:25Speaker 1: really tested it out, and it was the worst feeling
- 49:28Speaker 1: in the world. I was so tight, I was so slow.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I didn't look like this, but I felt like this.
- 49:33Speaker 1: It was terrible. I was like, oh my gosh, this
- 49:36Speaker 1: isn't me. I need to be, you know? And my
- 49:39Speaker 1: only goal is to be able to think something and
- 49:43Speaker 1: do it, execute, stamina-wise, endurance-wise, and skill-wise. So I'm always practicing,
- 49:51Speaker 1: and my stamina is always on point.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Well, drumming is like sprinting with your arms.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 2: I mean, you're just like long-term, fast-running with your arms.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like volume punches, right?
- 50:04Speaker 2: All drummers have a similar build. They're all, like, wiry
- 50:08Speaker 2: and strong and have, like, crazy endurance with their arms. Like,
- 50:12Speaker 2: what you could do with your arms is probably bananas.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I bet you could hit a fucking speed bag all
- 50:16Speaker 2: day long.
- 50:17Speaker 1: I could do battle ropes. I love speed bags.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 50:20Speaker 1: I have one at the gym at my studio. It's
- 50:23Speaker 1: all that fucking ba-da-da-da-da-da. And it's all tempo. You have
- 50:27Speaker 1: to find the rhythm. If the rhythm's not right, you
- 50:29Speaker 1: can't keep the bag going, you know? Battle ropes, you know,
- 50:33Speaker 1: for 30, 40 minutes.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Without stopping.
- 50:37Speaker 2: That's insane.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Just find different ways.
- 50:39Speaker 1: That's like the perfect thing.
- 50:40Speaker 2: For drumming, I would imagine. It's such a similar motion. Yeah.
- 50:44Speaker 1: You know? But it's so different than like the average
- 50:46Speaker 1: person that wants to work out. Like I don't get
- 50:48Speaker 1: to do that. You know, even though it's cool or
- 50:51Speaker 1: you look cool or you put on a certain amount
- 50:53Speaker 1: of muscle or whatever, it's just, I can't do it.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Well, it could get in your way for sure. I mean,
- 50:57Speaker 2: I think a drummer wants to be built like a
- 51:00Speaker 2: welterweight boxer. You know, you want to be like lean
- 51:03Speaker 2: and wiry and just have– crazy endurance. And if you
- 51:07Speaker 2: just get an intelligent trainer, they understand what you're trying
- 51:11Speaker 2: to achieve. They could achieve both goals. Like you can
- 51:15Speaker 2: strengthen things so that you don't get injured in jujitsu
- 51:18Speaker 2: if you want to do jujitsu, but not overwhelm you
- 51:22Speaker 2: with mass.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 2: You know?
- 51:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Figure it out. Like there's, yeah, there's definitely certain
- 51:27Speaker 1: exercises I could do once I start training jujitsu again
- 51:29Speaker 1: to make sure. My legs are cool.
- 51:32Speaker 2: A lot of like really elite jujitsu guys are not
- 51:34Speaker 2: bulky at all. There's a lot of like really thin
- 51:37Speaker 2: guys that are like very, very high level, especially because
- 51:40Speaker 2: there's weight classes and you know, what's really important is technique.
- 51:43Speaker 1: You know, it's tricky as the hands to like, not, not,
- 51:47Speaker 1: crushing my hand and making sure I'm always like gripping
- 51:50Speaker 1: properly and not leaving my fingers out.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. You've probably

- 52:43Speaker 1: Yeah. He's always so good about that.
- 52:46Speaker 2: If you're rolling and stuff, you just have to make
- 52:48Speaker 2: sure you're not rolling with anybody that's spastic. Anybody that's
- 52:52Speaker 2: just like, that doesn't have controlled energy. That's the great
- 52:56Speaker 2: thing about rolling with black belts. If I'm rolling with
- 52:59Speaker 2: a black belt, it's very controlled. We both know what
- 53:03Speaker 2: we're doing. So everyone's moving at a very controlled pace.
- 53:07Speaker 2: You very rarely get injured. When you get injured, is
- 53:10Speaker 2: when you're rolling with some young blue belt who's on steroids,
- 53:14Speaker 2: who's fucking jacked out of his mind.
- 53:15Speaker 1: He's trying to choke you out and he's just amped.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to choke out Travis Parker.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I'm going to fucking choke.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Out Travis Parker. Exactly.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Dude, I've been that. I was at a UFC gym.
- 53:25Speaker 1: I forget where I was. I was somewhere on tour.
- 53:27Speaker 1: And he's like, okay, let's spar a little bit. We're
- 53:29Speaker 1: supposed to be doing light sparring, whatever. Just kickboxing, boxing.
- 53:34Speaker 1: And he does a spinning back fist. Oh, Jesus. And
- 53:36Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, my gosh. Like, I have a show
- 53:40Speaker 1: in 45 minutes, man. Like, chill.
- 53:42Speaker 2: You know? He can't be getting concussed 45 minutes before.
- 53:46Speaker 1: But I do love it. Spinning back fist is very
- 53:48Speaker 1: hard to control, too. Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Once you start that rotation and that spin and that
- 53:53Speaker 2: arm going around.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I was almost done-zo.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:56Speaker 1: My son was there. He's like, oh. I was like, yeah,
- 53:58Speaker 1: that probably wasn't good, but. Yeah, but training is, yeah,
- 54:03Speaker 1: it's so awesome.
- 54:05Speaker 2: It's great for getting rid of aggression, too. Like, it
- 54:07Speaker 2: just cleans your mind up. It makes you relaxed.
- 54:10Speaker 1: For sure. And it humbles you, I think.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 54:13Speaker 1: I feel like everyone should train or at least do
- 54:15Speaker 1: it at some point in their life because it humbles you. And, yeah,
- 54:19Speaker 1: I feel like there'll be a lot less, like, hotheads
- 54:22Speaker 1: or testosterone out there.
- 54:23Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 54:24Speaker 4: 100%.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Jiu-jitsu people are some of the most laid-back and chill
- 54:28Speaker 2: people that can kill you that you'll ever meet.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Most of them are, like, very easygoing, really kind and
- 54:36Speaker 2: very relaxed.
- 54:38Speaker 1: And I feel like it's something you can do even
- 54:40Speaker 1: as you age. Oh, 100%.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Yeah. As long as you're training with good, smart people.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:45Speaker 2: You know, that's the thing. You've got to pick your
- 54:47Speaker 2: training partners wisely because that's what gets you injured is spastics,
- 54:51Speaker 2: people that freak out. And, you know, I used to
- 54:52Speaker 2: be a spastic. I get it. You know, when I
- 54:54Speaker 2: was young, when I was first starting out, I was
- 54:56Speaker 2: very aggressive and trying to just– force everything you do
- 55:01Speaker 2: everything fast and then but then one day you'll train
- 55:04Speaker 2: with someone like John Jacques and John Jacques just he
- 55:07Speaker 2: never explodes he's never out of balance he's never out
- 55:11Speaker 2: of position everything's just smooth and effortless and he's talking
- 55:15Speaker 2: to you like while he's rowing Joe Hogan look out
- 55:18Speaker 2: for your arm Joe Hogan he's like He's having fun.
- 55:21Speaker 2: He's so good. Yeah. And it's an art. It really is,
- 55:25Speaker 2: especially when it's done well, like the way Jean-Jacques can
- 55:29Speaker 2: do it. It's like it is an art. It's beautiful
- 55:31Speaker 2: to watch. You watch someone with a beautiful guard pass
- 55:33Speaker 2: and then nail a triangle, and it's like, oh, my God.
- 55:36Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think I'd done it in the past,
- 55:40Speaker 1: and it was a lot of fun, and it was
- 55:42Speaker 1: almost like chess up here. But I didn't feel like
- 55:47Speaker 1: it was much of a workout, whereas– with him, it's
- 55:53Speaker 1: like two hours. He's making it like a show. There's no,
- 55:57Speaker 1: there's no stopping for long periods of time. And we're
- 56:00Speaker 1: just dripping sweat. And I weigh a buck 50 and
- 56:04Speaker 1: he's whatever, 200, you know? And he's just, yeah, it's,
- 56:08Speaker 1: it is a workout and it's just challenging and, You're
- 56:11Speaker 1: engaged the whole time and it just feels good.
- 56:15Speaker 2: And then if you watch fights, you really appreciate what's
- 56:18Speaker 2: going on because you've tried to do that and you know.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Because a lot of people get very delusional when they
- 56:23Speaker 2: watch fights. They get pissed when they go to the ground.
- 56:25Speaker 2: I'll get in there, I'll fucking, I'll fuck these guys up.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Most men have a very delusional understanding or belief in
- 56:34Speaker 2: their ability to fight. So doing it gives you like, oh,
- 56:38Speaker 2: this is fucking really hard. And then you watch people
- 56:41Speaker 2: at an elite level. You watch Sugar Sean O'Malley or
- 56:44Speaker 2: someone like that, and you're like, oh, fuck, that's hard
- 56:46Speaker 2: to do what he just did. That's crazy. It gives
- 56:49Speaker 2: you a real true appreciation of the amount of effort
- 56:53Speaker 2: and the amount of discipline and intensity that this guy's
- 56:56Speaker 2: put in over years and years and years to achieve
- 56:59Speaker 2: this level where you're watching something spectacular in front of 15,000
- 57:04Speaker 2: people and millions of people on television.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Dude, I couldn't imagine that. Yeah, I was with Dom
- 57:09Speaker 1: one time, and me and Dom Cruz, he was just like,
- 57:11Speaker 1: try to sleep me. And I'm like, okay. And you
- 57:14Speaker 1: know how fast he is and how I swing and
- 57:17Speaker 1: he's over here. It was like, oh, it was so humiliating.
- 57:21Speaker 1: And then he just was just grappling me and not
- 57:25Speaker 1: letting me move. And he's like, don't ever, when you're
- 57:29Speaker 1: in a fight, be like, do something, do something. This
- 57:31Speaker 1: is what it feels like. He was just keeping me there.
- 57:34Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, I have much... more respect for just, yeah,
- 57:40Speaker 1: when someone's even just holding someone against the fence, that feels.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Awful, you know? And it drains you.
- 57:46Speaker 1: It drained me, yeah. And then to start a fresh
- 57:49Speaker 1: round where I'm trying to sleep him was, it was
- 57:52Speaker 1: impossible to begin with, but it was even more impossible,
- 57:55Speaker 1: you know?
- 57:55Speaker 2: His footwork is ridiculous. Dude, so good. It's ridiculous. And
- 57:58Speaker 2: he really invented a lot of his footwork. Like, his
- 58:01Speaker 2: footwork is very, Dominic Cruz, when he was the champion,
- 58:04Speaker 2: when he was a bantamweight champion, had some of the
- 58:07Speaker 2: most elusive footwork that anybody had ever seen before. It
- 58:10Speaker 2: was so unique and so different, and you couldn't get
- 58:13Speaker 2: anybody to emulate it in training because Dom's system, he
- 58:18Speaker 2: pretty much developed on his own, and there's a lot
- 58:20Speaker 2: of videos of him training it, a lot of videos
- 58:22Speaker 2: of him moving, and it's so unusual that you see
- 58:26Speaker 2: guys in front of him and they're just mesmerized because
- 58:29Speaker 2: it's step, step here, step, step there, pop, step, step here, kick, step,
- 58:33Speaker 2: step here, elbow, and you're like, fuck. Where is he?
- 58:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:37Speaker 2: You know, and that was such a smart because he's
- 58:40Speaker 2: such an intelligent guy, which is why he's such a
- 58:42Speaker 2: great like MMA analyst.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Yeah, he's so good.
- 58:45Speaker 2: So smart. And he just really figured out like, OK,
- 58:50Speaker 2: I don't have the most power. I'm not the strongest guy.
- 58:52Speaker 2: I'm not the biggest guy. What what can I have?
- 58:56Speaker 2: What can I develop that gives me an advantage over everybody? Well,
- 58:58Speaker 2: I can be like the most elusive, the most slick
- 59:02Speaker 2: moving guy that's ever existed.
- 59:04Speaker 1: And I feel like a lot of people in his
- 59:06Speaker 1: division adopted it from him.
- 59:07Speaker 2: Oh, for sure.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Figured it out, you know?
- 59:09Speaker 2: Well, they had to adapt.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:11Speaker 2: You know, when that guy's, you know, dominating people and
- 59:14Speaker 2: you can't do anything about it. I mean, he humiliated
- 59:17Speaker 2: a lot of people.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:18Speaker 2: He was in front of them and they developed this
- 59:20Speaker 2: style that was fine if someone's standing right in front
- 59:23Speaker 2: of you and engaging with you. Like, right in front
- 59:26Speaker 2: of you and there to be hit and taking a
- 59:27Speaker 2: shot and then giving one back and Don was doing
- 59:30Speaker 2: none of that. He was like, whoop, here, I'm over here, boop.
- 59:32Speaker 2: He was like, you know, very much like Lomachenko did
- 59:36Speaker 2: in boxing. Yeah. Just doing weird shit that people hadn't
- 59:38Speaker 2: seen before. And really kind of, again, developed it on
- 59:42Speaker 2: his own. If you look at like his, the camp
- 59:44Speaker 2: that he came out of in San Diego, there wasn't
- 59:46Speaker 2: other guys doing it like that. It was really just him. Yeah. Very,
- 59:51Speaker 2: very unique guy. But I love that there's styles that,
- 59:57Speaker 2: sort of rise that, that, that exists that someone just
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: sort of creates. They just realize like, what, what do
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I have physically as a, you know, as my tools
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: and how can I implement these tools in a way
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: that's different than anything that these guys have seen before?
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Cause there was nothing like him.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: No, there was nothing. But then you see guys that
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: came up after him, guys like TJ Dillashaw, who was
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: also awesome with footwork and, you know, a lot of
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: his footwork guarantee was inspired by watching Dominic and a
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: lot of these other guys that are these Corey Sanhagen
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: guys that are constantly switching stances same thing the style
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: developed out of that because before Dominic Cruz there really
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: was no one who had footwork like that not even
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: close and so when you see TJ you know like
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: who in my opinion was one of the greatest bantamweights
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: of all time like when he beat Hennon Barau which
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: was Hennon Barau at the time was thought to be
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: If not the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, at
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: least number two behind Jose Aldo, and he was undefeated.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And TJ just styled on him. I mean, it was— and
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: he went out there like he was sparring. It wasn't
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: even like he was fighting for the world title. He
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: went out there, like, super loose and focused and relaxed
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: and just switching stances and cutting angles and hitting him
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: with shots and moving to the left and hitting him
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: with a head kick to the right. Like, fuck.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he put on a show, that fight.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Woo! One of the greatest title-winning performances in the history
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: of the sport, for sure.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I wish he didn't struggle with so many injuries and
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: everything because he was phenomenal. It's a tragedy.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: It is a tragedy. I mean, he has significant shoulder
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: injuries to the point where I think he's going to
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: have to get artificial shoulders. Damn. He had no supraspinatus
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: on both arms. It was just completely ripped off, and
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: he would just strengthen all the other muscles and just
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: deal with it, and then it would just pop out.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: When he fought Aljamain Sterling, he told the referee in
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: the green room, he said, my shoulder's going to pop out,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: but it's okay. I'll put it back. Let me keep fighting.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Imagine that. You're going to fight Aljamain Sterling for the
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: world title. He's a beast and one of the best
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: grapplers ever. And you're thinking, I have to deal with
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: the fact that my shoulder is going to definitely get
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: dislocated in this fight because it just doesn't stay. It's
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: just this loose fucking thing that just pops out all
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: the time. And he's trying to fight. And just all
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: will and discipline and intensity.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: That was Dom's shoulder too, right? Towards the end?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Dom had a bunch of injuries.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: I mean, he had the ACLs.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he had ACLs. The shoulder was the last one.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: That was the last draw. His last shoulder surgery. Yeah,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: I mean, look, the human body is not designed to
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: be punched and kicked and to be grappled and strangled
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: and twisted and armbarred. It's like, at a certain point
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: in time, It just gives out.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: That's just how it is.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: And it sucks because, you know, some of these guys
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: have so much more to give in their mind, and
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: their body just fails them after a certain point in time.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: And you see that with some of these older guys.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: It's like they've just had a bunch of knee surgeries
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: and maybe a back surgery and this and that, and
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: then they're a shadow of themselves inside the octagon.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Sometimes it's sad to watch, you know, but I
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: also understand the feeling of, That's all you know and
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: you just want to keep fighting.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Well, it's also they have this insane belief in themselves
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: and they always think that.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: That's what got them there also.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: That's how they became a champion in the first place.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Like people telling you, you'll never play the drums. You're
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: never going to run. You're never going to– and you're like,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: I'll show you. And that's how they all are. They're
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: all like, I'll show– and they're like, it's over. You
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: got to hang it up. It's over. Your time is gone. Like, no, no, no.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: I got one more in me. I got three or
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: four more fights in me. I'm going to fight until
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: I'm 41 or whatever it is.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: That would be so hard. I think of Dustin and
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I think of like even his fight against Islam and
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: his fight against, what's the French fighter?
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Benoit Saint-Denis.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Dog, I couldn't tell myself I need to hang up
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: the gloves if I fought like that in those fights.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: He's a fucking beast.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a beast.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Like Dustin to me isn't, He doesn't look like he's
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: at the end of his career. He's still very competitive.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: And I think that was the best fight against Islam.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Anyone's fought, you know?
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: It was a very good fight. He's elite. I mean,
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Dustin's an elite fighter.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: So I could see being Dustin and struggling with like, ah,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: this is hard for me to stop fighting because you're
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: that fucking good.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Well, with Dustin, the physical issues aren't even really like
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: joints and neck. It's his head. He's had too many
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: brain injuries. And that's, he's got some sort of a
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: separation between the two halves of his brain. There's like
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: some issue with the center of his brain. I don't know.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I didn't even know about that. Yeah.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: He's talked about it pretty openly, but I mean, you know,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: he had that, that incident where he got drunk and
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: got crazy that, but that's a lot of that is CTE.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I guarantee. And, you know, he's, he's doing a lot
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: of things to try to mitigate that. And he's seeking
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: help and really there, there are some, ways that you
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: can recover at least in some way and improve on
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: what you're doing. But I think for him it's best
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: to not be fighting anymore. You know, it's just at
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: a certain point in time you're only going to accumulate
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: more damage and then whatever you're dealing with now is
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: just going to get worse and then maybe you can't
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: recover from it. True. And, you know, he's got a
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: family and he's in this situation where it's like, I
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: want to be there for my family. I don't want
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: to be this guy that's like completely compromised when I'm 50,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: 60 years old where I can't walk anymore and someone's
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: got to take me around or hold my hand. Yeah.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Because there are guys like that, you know, especially like
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: older boxers. You run into some old boxers and it's like,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: it's really sad, man. Yeah. You know, you see guys
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: like Tommy Hearns talking. It was like not much older
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: than me. And you see him talking and moving around.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: You're like, fuck, like he paid a price.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: These guys pay a price. It's a rough way to
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: make a living.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Yeah, the fight game is crazy.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: It's the craziest.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I'm happy my drums don't hit me back. Straight up,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah. It's also, you can do what you
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: do for a long time. I mean, you can play
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: drums for a long time. When you're fighting, your peak
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: is such a small window of life and it's just,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: there's so much that you have to pour into it
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: and then eventually you have to realize that that window's
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: closed and you have to move on. Even though you're
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: still young and you still have all this life and
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: look at a guy like Dustin, he looks fucking great.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: You know, he looks great, he sounds great when you
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: talk to him, he seems like he's all there. Physically,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: he looks like he's never been better, but the window's closed.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: You know, there's these young guys coming up and they
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: don't have the injuries that you have. They don't have
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: the problems that you have. They don't have the wear
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: and tear and And they're going to get to you
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: before you get to them. And maybe they wouldn't have
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: gotten to you five years ago or six years ago.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: But they can now. And it's just not there anymore.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: And it's hard for guys to accept because their entire
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: identity is based on this one thing. It's very fleeting.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: So that would be the most difficult thing in the world. Yeah.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: But the glory that they experience is above and beyond
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: anything we're ever going to know.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I heard someone talking about it online. And they were saying,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: imagine being a cage fighter and it's all you've prepared
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: for for the last 20 years to be locked in
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: a cage in your underwear to scrap with someone and
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: have the most grueling fight camps. And then you're just,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: we're just going to take you out of it and
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: you can't do that anymore.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: It's like, that's all you've known. You know, it's a,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: they experienced a different life.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Than us, you know?
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Their highs are way higher. Yeah.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Highest of highs, lowest of lows.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: The rest of the life is kind of gray and
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: dull in comparison to the bright lights. I mean, it's
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: like Connor keeps trying to come back. It's like all
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: these guys, it's like that thing. Like, Connor's worth like
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: half a billion dollars. He doesn't have to do anything
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: anymore if he doesn't want to.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: But he still has this thing inside of him where
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: he wants to reclaim that lost glory.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: Whatever the discipline that Khabib had where he could just...
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Completely walked out on top, right?
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Retired on top.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: That's beautiful. And if everyone could have the discipline to
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: do it like that, you know?
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: That's rare. That guy's got Mount Everest discipline. It's like
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: a different kind of discipline. That's why he's one of
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: the greatest. Yeah, one of the greatest of all time.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: And that's why, you know, what's interesting is he stayed training.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: He's been training ever since he retired. And he says
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: he's much better now than when he retired.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Wow. Could you imagine?
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Isn't that crazy? He says he watches his old fights
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: and he sees mistakes that he made and how he
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: would do it differently now. Wow. And how he does
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: things differently in training now. And I know guys who
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: train with him and they say he fucking mauls people.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: He's mauling these, like, you know, top ten UFC contenders.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: And he gets in with them, and they can't hold
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: on to him. He's fucking, he's an animal. I believe it.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: And he's not even thinking about fighting again. But he's
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: an awesome coach now, too. And having a guy like
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: that in your corner, imagine the inspiration that a young
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: fighter gets having Khabib Nurmagomedov coach them. Like, you're being
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: coached by one of the most ruthless, disciplined guy that's
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: ever competed in the sport. Retired undefeated, one of the
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: rare ones. And he's your coach, and you want to
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: make him happy. You want to make him proud.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Yeah, having his guidance. Yeah.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: Well, he's going to be in Islam's corner this weekend.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: I'm leaving tomorrow.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Dude, I can't wait.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: It's going to be sick. I can't wait. That's a
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: good fight. Very, very interesting fight because Ian Machado Gary
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: is a very difficult guy to get a hold of.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Very tall and long.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: Fast as fuck.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Good striker.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: Very smart. Knows how to win. Knows how to adapt
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: and change.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Islam's striking hard. is fierce too though.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: It's a lot better than it used to be. And, uh,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: at like the same level as all the other guys
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: in the sport, which is really crazy because his grappling
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: is above and beyond. So it's like, you're dealing with
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: a guy who there's no picnic on the feet. He'll
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: fuck you up on the feet. I mean, he knocked
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: out Volkanovski with a head kick. He's elite on the feet.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: And then when it comes to the ground, there's no
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: one like him. There's no one like him in the division,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: any division. He's, he, is a crusher. He just crushes people.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Yeah, he's nasty.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: I mean, think about how good Charles Oliveira is, one
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: of the greatest submission artists of all time. Islam got
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: him down to the ground and just smushed him, just
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: crushed him quickly, just made him tap quick. It was incredible.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought that fight was going to be more competitive.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: Everybody did. Yeah. Yeah, but that's how good Islam is.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: And he's also a guy that you cannot train harder
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: than him. It's not humanly possible. So he goes into
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: every event knowing it is impossible for someone to train
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: harder than him. It's impossible for someone to have tougher
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: people in camp than he has. I mean, those guys
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: out of Dagestan are on a completely different level. I mean,
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: there is an entire room filled with absolute savages. And
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: they're just getting after it every day, full discipline. No
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: one drinks. No one parties. No one does everything. They
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: pray five times a day. They're super religious. And they're
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: just driven. Yeah. And, you know, he comes into that
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: fight with that kind of confidence because of that. It's
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: going to be a fun weekend.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: That main event is very tricky because Ian can move, man.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: He's a really slick guy, really tall, and he's also
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: very fast and long. So he's going to have a
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: significant height and reach advantage. He's going to be– moving
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: all over the place, landing. And if Islam is not
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: careful in how he engages, he could get caught. And
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: you can only get caught by a guy like Ian
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: a couple of times, if at all, you know, before
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: you're in trouble. So it should be very interesting. Those
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: are the kind of fights I love that are a puzzle.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like styles make fights. With that one, that's
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like a great example. Yes.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Yes. And it's also, Ian has this insane confidence. He
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: has this insane belief that he's special, that, you know,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: this is his destiny, and that, you know, I mean,
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: it looks like that at every weigh-in. It looks like
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: that at every stare-down. It looks like that at every
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: press conference. Like, this is his destiny. He really believes that,
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: which is another huge thing that a fighter has to have,
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: like almost a delusional belief in themselves. Yeah.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I saw an interview where he was, he actually said, um,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: he believes in the balance with his family, with every
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: part of his life where most fighters will only focus
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: on fighting during the eight to ten weeks they're fighting
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: or they're training. And he's like, no, I actually need
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: everything to be in order to make this one thing
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: go great. So I believe in more balance than imbalance.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: I think it depends entirely on the person and also
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: depends entirely on what does your family look like? What
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: is the relationship with your wife and your children like?
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: Is it harmonious? Do you get love from it and
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: strength and inspiration? Or is there chaos? Is there arguing
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: all the time and bickering and pettiness and bullshit?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Like the Mark Kerr fight? The movie?
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Mark Kerr, yeah. The smashing machine?
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Oh my God, when she's fighting, when she's squabbing with
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: him right before he goes out to fucking fight, I
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: was like, I was like, oh, I could feel for him.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Oh, dude, I've seen that before. I've seen that with
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: multiple fighters. I know one guy who during the night
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: before the fight, his girlfriend at the time would always
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: start fights with him. Like huge fights. Because she didn't
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: like that this one thing, fighting, was more important to
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: him than her. She wanted to be the entire focus
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: of his attention. And when there was this thing that
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: was taking away, she was a complete narcissist. This thing
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: that was taking away from his attention to her, she
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: would sabotage it. So she would start fights. She would
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: storm out of the hotel room, slam the door, and
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: just be gone, shut her phone off. And here he is,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: freaking out. He's got to fight for the world title in,
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: you know, whatever, 20 hours. And he's dealing with this nonsense.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: It's the worst.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: I can't imagine.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Well, I think that's why some guys, they'd rather take
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: that isolated approach. They would rather just do the Spartan
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: thing and just be alone in camp and sleep on
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: a cot and wake up in the morning and run
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: and just live this like very hard six to eight
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: week life.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I feel that part. Like I can't even, even leading
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: up to shows, I can't be too comfortable.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Oh no.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Like I can't get a massage before I go play
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: or be chilling in my hotel room. I need to
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: be uncomfortable.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Why is that? I don't know.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: It's just that's all I've known, too. You know, it's
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: like that.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I came up like lugging my own gear around, setting
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: up my drums and then waiting for the show to start.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: And I don't I can't just watch a movie before
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: I play or wake up from a nap. It's just
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: it's just not in me. I'm up jump roping. I'm
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: up like watching fights. I'm up going for a run, practicing,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: learning something new. That's the best headspace for me to
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: be in.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Well, I would imagine the difference between drumming and I
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: think any other kind of musical instrument is that it's
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: so physical. It's so physical that it's like a workout.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: You have to be in shape to drum. You have to.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't feel sluggish.
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I'm a fucking weirdo, though. I'm worried about what I eat.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Do I have enough energy? You know what I mean? Yeah,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: and just jump roping. Right before I play.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Dialing it in, right? And knowing what you need because
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: of the experiences that you've had. You've had so many experiences,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: so many performances that you can just dial it in.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I think that in that way, it's very similar to
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: fighting is that every fighter has to have their own approach.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: And Ian's approach is to have his family with him
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: all the time. And Islam Makhachev's approach is very different.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: It's like Spartan, all those guys together, you eat and
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: train with the guys. Just separate yourself from everything.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's super personal.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got to be personal because everybody's got a different...
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Everyone has a different personality, different mindset, different triggers, different
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: things that fuck with them, different things that calm them down,
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: you know? Yeah.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Also, I have all these weird whatever where I'm jump roping, running,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: practicing for hours before I go on stage, and then
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: there's the times where everything... I get thrown a curveball
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: and I get to the venue five minutes before... And
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: I can go up and do it like no problem
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: because I think I've done all this other preparation.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: It's like I also know it works without it.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: You're always ready. Stay ready so you're always ready.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Yes. I live by that.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Stay ready so you don't have to get ready.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: That's the goal.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, fighters have that too because the fighters that
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: get like really out of shape in between fights, they're
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: the ones that really struggle. Like Paddy.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Where you see him blow up like a week later.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: It's like, is that even the same person?
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but Patty, it's a little deceptive. Really? Patty gets fat,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: but he doesn't get out of shape. Patty's got incredible
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: endurance and an insane work ethic, but he also really
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: loves to live and live life. You know, so have
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: a few beers, eat some pizza, get fat, but he
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: still could go to the gym and probably outwork everybody. Wow. Like, it's...
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: there's no way you're in the kind of shape that
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: that guy's in if you're not training all the time.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: So even when he gets fat, it's just eating. He's
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: just eating piles of food. I'm sure if you, if
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: I'm sure when you see him with his big moon face,
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: if he got to the gym and worked out, you'd
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: be like, fuck. Yeah. Still a beast. It's not like
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: he's going to be exhausted and lying on his back
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: after one round in the bag. Like he's, it's only fat,
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: you know? And then he's got the, and then there's
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: also this, part of the discipline of the weight cut
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: is like this. locking in and focusing where you're measuring
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: all your food. And like, there's, there's a certain like
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: shift in the mindset that takes place when he goes
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: from being fat to ripped. And he goes from being
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: fat to ripped. I mean, he does it better than
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: anybody because everyone looks at him like, oh, that guy's
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: never going to make weight. And then he shows up
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: at the weigh-ins. shredded, chiseled.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think I see anyone with as big
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: of a transformation.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: No. No, his is beyond. And people love him for it, too.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: That's also part of the craziness of it. They celebrate
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: it because it's so silly.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Yeah, he's so likable.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he's great.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: So fucking skillful, too. What he did to Benoit Saint-Denis
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: was nuts.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: And his Gaethje fight was like.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: That was one of the best fights I've seen in person.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Just where I was like, what the fuck just happened? Well,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: you see what Gaethje just did to Ilya Deporia, and
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: now you realize how fucking tough Patty is.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Patty's tough. He's silly, and he's playful, and he's a
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: lot of fun, and everybody loves him, and he's all likable,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: and he's dancing around. But when it gets down to it,
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: that motherfucker is tough as nails. Yeah.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: Scary how quick that was. Yeah. And Gaethje's just... Fuck.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Thank God for him.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: He's so... I was so happy.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: Me too. It was incredible. And seeing him do that
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: in the White House, on the lawn of the White House,
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: and win the world title when everybody thought he was
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: like a 6-1 underdog on some sports books, which is nuts.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: I thought that was very disrespectful.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I loved his interview with you.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: I thought 6-1 was crazy. Yeah.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: And when he was like, I couldn't let him fucking
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: win just based on how bad he was going to
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: disrespect me after he beat me. the shit he was
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: going to say on the mic, whatever. I was like, nah,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: it wasn't going to happen. I love that. I love that.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Sometimes you fuck with a guy's head so much that
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: you give him fuel to recover and survive when he
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: might not be able to ordinarily. But the thing about
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Gaethje is he has zero quit in him. You can't
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: get him to quit. He's never going to quit. It's
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: like you could break his body down like Max Holloway
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: did and knock him unconscious and And there's nothing you
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: can do about that. You get knocked unconscious, you're knocked unconscious.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: It's just physical.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I've never seen Gage eat like that, you know,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: in the Max fight. No. And I love Max. And
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: I just, yeah, that was shocking.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it was pretty crazy. It was pretty crazy. That was,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: and then to have him go from that to become
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: the world champion just a year and a half, two
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: years later, whatever it was.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: Sick.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Sick story.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: It's a great sport, man. I mean, there's nothing like
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: it in terms of, like, the true intensity and the
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: emotions and the excitement. There's nothing like it. I think
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: the last time I saw you was at a UFC
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: at the Apex. I think that's the last time we
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: ran into each other.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: In Conway and Stipe fought.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Was that what it was? Mm-hmm. Wow. Wasn't that crazy?
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Oh, being in that small venue when that happened was, like.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: Small venue, no audience. There was probably, like, maybe... 50
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: people in the whole room, maybe a hundred in the
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: whole room.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: You could hear a needle drop too when it happened.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: I think that's the first fight I took my wife
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: to and she was like, what?
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Like, yeah. Oh, that was a devastating fight too. And
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: there was also, you have a heavyweight fight in the
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: small octagon. So the apex for people that don't know
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: has an octagon that I think is 30 or 40%
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: smaller than.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Damn, is it that much smaller?
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Yeah, how much smaller is, let's put that into perplexity,
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: ask it. How much smaller is the UFC Apex octagon
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: versus the regular octagon that they use in arenas?
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: And you're trapped in there with Francis?
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: Exactly, exactly. And also Francis looking for revenge.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: Because this is Stipe beat Francis in his first loss. Okay, 30%,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: 30% less space. That's a lot, man. 30% is crazy.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: So you can see the images there. When you see
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: the apex next to the big one, the pay-per-view one,
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: that is a lot of space. And you're just stuffed
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: in there with a guy who is one of the
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: absolute scariest fucking guys that's ever lived. And you can't move.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: There's not a lot of movement. A lot of people
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: like that because it forces action. But I think the
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: space provides more of a canvas for... you know, no
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: pun intended, for them to paint their masterpiece. You've got
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: to be able to have angles to get out. And
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: if you're just constrained by an object, which is a fence,
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: when maybe if that object wasn't there, you could move
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: to the side, move in, and counter. You know, think
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: like when Sugar Sean O'Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling, and
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: Aljamain is pressing forward. Now, if the cage was closer...
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: He wouldn't have been able to move back as far.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: It cuts off a lot of the possibilities. Yeah. It
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: cuts off a lot of things.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: That was another shocker, right?
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: Oh, it was amazing. Yeah. When Sean did that at
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: the White House and saluted when he knocked out that
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: guy and then.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: And the walk-off?
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: The walk-off and then saluted.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: Oh, hard. So hard.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: And he said he envisioned it, which is even cooler. Like,
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: he saw it in his mind that that's what he
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: was going to do.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that was great. He had actually... We were texting
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: back and forth. He's like, I need to knock him out.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: And I was like, when it happened, I was like, oh,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: that's just like right off into the sunset, you know?
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: Well, in his position, he really needed something special because
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Marab versus Piotr Jan wasn't formally announced yet. And it
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: was thought like maybe if Sean had a spectacular event,
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: he could get the next shot at the title because
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: he has a victor over Piotr Jan. That didn't come
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: to be. So now Piotr Jan and Marab are having
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: a rematch. And after that rematch, if I had to guess,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: it's most likely going to be Sean fighting for the
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: title again.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: And he has that win over Peter. So that's exciting, right?
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: But he doesn't have a win over Marab. So if
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Marab wins the title again, he's going to be like, fuck!
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like you said, styles make fights. Yeah.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it doesn't mean that he can't beat Merab.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: I mean, I think Sean could beat anybody. But it's
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: just he's got to figure out whatever it is that
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: he needs to figure out to solve that puzzle. That
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: is that little Georgian Tasmanian devil that never gets tired.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Yeah. He's like the Energizer Rabbit, like just keeps going.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Dude, have you ever seen what Merab's face looks like
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: when they did like an X-ray of his face, an MRI? No.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: With his broken nose? No.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: No.
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: It might be the most insane broken nose I've ever
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: seen in my life.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Didn't he say he's not going to get it fixed?
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: He's not going to get it fixed. Because then he'll
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: have to take a year off of fighting. Not only
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: a year off of fighting, I don't think he can
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: even spar for a long time. So he can't. That's
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: what his nose looks like. Whoa. Yo, it looks like.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Do you know who Pusshead is? No. Okay, Pusshead's the
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: illest artist ever. He did like Misfits. He did like
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: Metallica stuff. He did these skulls. Tell me that doesn't
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: look like. That looks like Marab's face. Top right, right there.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: So he did Zorlack skateboarding, did a bunch of Thrasher stuff. Wow.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Dude.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Marab's got to do a skull t-shirt or some
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: kind of merch with that.
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: Dude, look at it. He totally should. That should be
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: his logo. Look at that nose, man. Look at the
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: break of the bone. How hard it's turned towards his
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: right eye. I mean, it's really insane. I mean, he
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: must not have any ability to get oxygen out of
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: that nose.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: His cardio must be all mouth breathing, which is even
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: more insane when you think about how much endurance that
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: guy has. Yeah. Look at his nose. I mean, it's crazy.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: The twist in that thing is fucking insane. I mean,
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: it's like it covers part of his vision. Yeah.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I feel like he's been out, what, six, seven months now?
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: It's been a while.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Um. It's been a while since he fought again. I mean,
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: but it was because he lost the title to Piotr,
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: and now they're going to have a rematch.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: And what, he had defended the belt three times in
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: that year, right? Mm-hmm. That's a lot.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: I think it was three times. Yeah, well, it was
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: definitely a strength of schedule was tough because, you know,
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: you're going through these camps. You have these brutal weight cuts.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: It's like your body gets worn out. Yeah. But then
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: there's also Piotr Jan, who had fought Murat before and
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: lost to him. and realized what was necessary to beat
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: the guy and fought a perfect fight.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that performance was amazing.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: Jan is a fucking assassin too, man. He's a scary guy.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: He's a ruthless, mean, technical, vicious guy. And now he
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: already knows that he can beat Merab, so it's going
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: to be interesting to see who makes the adjustments in
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: the rematch. Is that happening? Is that scheduled? The Merab fight?
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: I think it is. I don't know when it is,
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: but I'm 90% sure that they've scheduled that fight. That
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: might be Salt Lake City. Is that the Salt Lake
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: City fight? I don't know, but it's exciting.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great time for the sport. I mean,
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: the sport is on fire right now. It says TBD. TBD,
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: but it is announced? No, I mean, no, the Salt
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Lake City has a TBD for that fight. But if
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: you look up Merab versus Pewterion 2, does it say
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: where it's happening? Usually it says his next fight on
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: the thing I'm looking at, and it doesn't have anything
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: popping up. I'm pretty sure they've announced that that's happening.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: LA card it looks crazy you going yeah I think
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: so that should be fun yeah.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: Are you are you touring right now at all like
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: what's going.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: On nah I'm just in the studio this year just
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: finished writing and producing a few albums and then was
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: finishing this.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: Doc So what is the L.A. card right now? It's
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: Pantoja versus Joshua Vann.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm seeing a post that says it's reported to
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: happen in.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: Abu Dhabi in October. Oh, the rematch with Piotr Jan
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: and Murab?
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: Okay. That makes sense. That would be a good one
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: for Abu Dhabi. Yeah. Yeah, the L.A. card is going
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: to be sick. It's going to be so good. So
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: it's Arman Saroukian versus Mauricio Hufi. That's going to be insane.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Mike Cano versus Ortega.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: That's this weekend. Oh, sorry. Which one did you want?
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: The L.A. card. Oh, my bad. No worries. That's it. Yeah,
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: so the rematch between Joshua Vann and Pantoja.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: Dude, I can't wait to see what happens.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Yeah, man, that Pantoja arm break was such a bummer. Yeah.
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: To have him fall back like that. Yeah, Moikano versus
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Brian Ortega. Yeah, it should be fun. Gable Stevenson again.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Cheeto.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Against Charles Jourdain. Yeah, should be fun.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: L.A.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Crowds are always fun, too, because UFC doesn't get to L.A.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: very often. It's always pretty hyped up.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm excited when it comes to L.A. I love Vegas,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: but something about L.A., you know?
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: You still, like, live in there?
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: Los Angeles?
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: I mean... Do you feel any difference over the last
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: five years, six years since the pandemic? Yeah.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: I mean, for me, my goal is to not drive
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: past DeSoto. That's the goal. That's like my living is
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: wake up with my wife and my kids, go to
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: the studio, come back. Well, I actually, I just bought
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: a garage where I keep all my cars. So some
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: days I'll leave my house. It's a three-mile run. I'll
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: run to my garage, pick up one of my old
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: school cars, drive to the studio. Then drive back home.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: That's the perfect day.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: Oh, that's nice.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I don't drive past DeSoto.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, if you could do that and avoid the real
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: chaos that's the center of the hive of L.A.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Once in a while, I'll get out if it's like,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: you know, someone's a show or something that, you know,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: me and the wife want to do or me and
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: the kids. But other than that, studio, home, studio, home, train.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: Smart. Yeah. Yeah, that's definitely a better life.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: I have friends that live in the heart of it,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: like in West Hollywood. I'm like, what is it like?
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: They're like, it's not the same. Yeah. It's not the same.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: It's just.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I couldn't do it. The days I'm in the city,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: I have a bunch of stuff I'll hit, you know,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: like I'll go to Crossroads, I'll go do whatever, but
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: it's rare.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I can only imagine.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: Did you ever think about getting out?
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: I don't know if I could do it yet. I
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: think like. for what I do, you know, besides like
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: playing in Blink or touring when I'm home, I'll get
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: a call and they'll say, hey, can we come by
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the studio? I want to make this with you. I
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: want you to play drums on this. I'll see Game
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: walking in my neighborhood, Trav, I need you on this record, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: I just, there's so much that happens right there for me.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: I think there'll come a time where I don't need
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: to be there, but right now I feel like I'm
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: in demand and I'm playing on a bunch of stuff
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: and I'm recording a bunch of stuff. So it makes
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: sense for me.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: Do you ever have some thought about like living in
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: the country and retiring somewhere and just like laying back?
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we were on tour and there was a huge
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: storm in Nashville area. So we were in Franklin for
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: a few days, Franklin, Tennessee, and we immediately started looking
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: at houses. We're like, we got to go here. But
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: we kind of do that everywhere we go. You know,
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: you travel, you go on vacation, you're like, we want
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: to live here. We want to get a spot here.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: But I do love Southern California. We have a spot
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: up north like in Santa Barbara. I love Santa Barbara
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: as well. I love the desert.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: Santa Barbara is awesome.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I feel like moving around in Southern California keeps things fresh.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Like going to the desert for a week or a
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: few days, going to Santa Barbara, and then during the
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: week staying in Calabasas or like Los Angeles and, you know,
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: working out of there.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: The Montecito area is insane.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Montecito is amazing. And I also feel like the desert,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: like Coachella out there, you feel like you're in a
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: different world. You feel much further away from L.A. and
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: all the chaos than you are.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: It's cool.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. I mean, how many people have gone
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: out to the desert just to try to find themselves?
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: Yeah, true.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: It's a very unique environment out there.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: It's kind of weird that they decided to put music
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: festivals out there. I know. I know. It's wild.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: You know, one of my best friends, when I left
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: home at around like 16, 17, my dad had given
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: me a couple options. He said, join the military like me,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: start paying rent, or take off. So I took off, right?
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Was a trash man on Laguna Beach for a while.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Then I moved to Riverside, and I lived with my
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: friend Bill Fold. He had this promoting company called 98 Posse,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: and he would do everything from raves to punk rock shows,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: hardcore shows. anything, and he ended up starting Coachella.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: He was obsessed, like what we talked about earlier. He
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: was one of those people that were obsessed, and I
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: watched him build this amazing festival. Yeah, he's just pretty awesome.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: But the city of Coachella, it's crickets all the rest
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: of the year. There's nothing. It gets so hot, it's
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: 115 degrees. Most businesses close down halfway through the day.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: They're open for the morning. And then when Coachella happens,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: the city thrives, and it's just chaos.
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: Are they happy with that? That seems like there's probably
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: a lot of conflicted people.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't own a business out there,
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: but I bet for everyone that's struggling when it's 115, 120,
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: and no one's coming out of the house, I feel
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: like they're almost.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: Like, Coachella saves them. Like, the festival saves everybody.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Oh, definitely. Just the volume of people in the town.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: The volume of people that comes through, I think, saves
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: all the businesses.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: For sure, if you have a business.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: When we're out there and it's not, like, the season
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: or whatever they call it, and it's considered too hot,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: most businesses are open from 9 to 1 p.m.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: That drive out to the desert, though, is like... Better
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: make sure your air conditioning works.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: And no old-school cars. Don't be taking none of your
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: old-school cars on that trip.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: Well... The only thing I've driven from L.A. to La
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Quinta out there is, have you ever heard of Velocity?
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: I got a K5 from them. Oh, nice. You could
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: drive that out there.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Tom Segura has one of those. Yeah, they're sick. Yeah,
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: he got one of their Blazers.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: They make such a great K5.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he loves his.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: I think I've seen this. It's all black.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: Oh, it's brown? It's brown.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: I'm colorblind.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Are you really?
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: I'm fucking severely colorblind.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: I have to ask my two-and-a-half-year-old son what color things
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: are sometimes. That's how bad it is. I'll be like,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: what color is your favorite? And then he'll tell me
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: what colors they are.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: There's Tom's. Does that look black to you?
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: Kind of. Yeah. That really looks black to me.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Yeah, well, that's pretty dark. That's in the shadows. That's
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: like bad.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I have an all black one.
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: What a sick-looking truck.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: So a lot of people build these K5s and they
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: do resto mods, but they... they're either overbuilt and they
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: don't drive great. Or it's like, uh, it's, it's over,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: it's either overbuilt or it, it, it doesn't run great
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: or they do too much. Like this isn't overdone. It's,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: they make the perfect rest.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: It's reliable.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: It's reliable.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah. There's mine.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: Oh, nice. Oh, you got a very old school look
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: and I love it. Yeah.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: I wanted it to look almost like bone stock. It does.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: I have a couple of K fives, but this is
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: the velocity one. I have a, I have an OG
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: orange one with plaid interior that's 72 that still has
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: the old school engine in it and everything.
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. And it just stays in Palm Springs, and that's
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: where we drive that one.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Does it have the old school brakes, too?
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: No.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: Yeah, fuck that.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: That's it right there.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Oh, nice.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: But see how it looks like it shouldn't leave Palm Springs.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: You know, my wife drives it a lot.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: Oh, that's cool. Yeah, K5s are dope. I have a
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: 72 Bronco from Icon.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Sick. Icon was great.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: They made a Blazer.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, they did.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: I almost bought it. It was so good. And he's
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: so cool. Is it John?
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like he kind of set it all off.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Jonathan Ward. Oh, that's the one.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Okay, so I built that with Delmo and a couple
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: people around LA. I just took it from shop to shop.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: This was my version of a Velocity.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: But I think sick.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: It didn't drive as good as a Velocity restoration.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Well, it's also you're so lifted.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: Like, the handling on the thing must be rough. Like,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: going around corners and shit.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: It was really cool. I was really proud of it.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: That's very cool looking. There's something about that iconic design.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: There's something with the way those things look. Look at that. God,
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: that looks awesome.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: I just remember as a kid seeing topless Chevy trucks.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: I was like, what? It doesn't get any better than this.
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Yeah. There's a weird thing about old school cars. They
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: spark something in you.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: They're more exciting. I like new cars. I love new cars.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: They're cool. But they don't have the same feeling. There's
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: something about those old schools that's just, like, it's mechanical. Like,
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: you're connected to it, you know?
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'm a sucker for old Chevys and Cadillacs,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: and I have a bunch that's, like.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: How many cars do you have now?
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: I think I have 12. I have a lot of
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: old school Impalas.
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: I love old school Impalas.
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: Like 65s?
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: I have a 59 Impala.
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: Oh, whoa. Real old school.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I have a 62 Wagon Impala. 63 convertible Impala.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: 60 Cadillac G and X.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: Bro, 60 Cadillacs are wild looking. It's so... Do you
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: have a picture of that thing?
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: I think it might be on the interweb somewhere.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: 1960 Cadillacs were Crazy.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: Oh, that's my old 1960 Caddy. I used to have
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: that one.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: Wow, look at that thing. That is wild. Good luck
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: parking that anywhere.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Yeah, nothing feels like that when you drive those cars.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: Oh, I'd imagine. It's a boat. That feels like you're
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: in the middle of the Queen Mary.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Look how sick those are. That was my 53.
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: That's yours in the far right?
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: These are all my cars in my collection from at
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: some point in my life, yeah.
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: So you're an old soul, dude.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I am.
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: There must be. There's something about you that connects with
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: these things.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Old cars move.
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: I don't know. I like the smell of them. I
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: like everything.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: They're just hard to maintain. You've got to be a
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: really good mechanic.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: It's hard. You know what kind of feels old school
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: that I got recently but that's new is the Chevy
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Fox truck.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: What is that?
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: That thing's a fucking beast. See if you can pull
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: it up. It's the Fox... the Fox Chevy Silverado.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: Is this a new car that's come out recently?
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: It's Chevy's answer to the Raptor or the TRX. That's
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: mine right there. So it's usually, they usually have orange accents,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: but I did all mine matte black. So it's just,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: I think it has six or 700 horsepower. It has
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: like Baja suspension. You could drive it anywhere.
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: So it's just like a Raptor.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: Why do I not know about this? That's crazy. The
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: Fox factory Silverado.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: That's my, that's my daily Fox shocks.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: Yeah. So Fox shocks did a collaboration with them.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: Yeah. The guts, like you could literally jump this truck
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: wherever the fuck you want, you know?
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: So that's your daily driver. Yeah.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: I have a Raptor.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: I love the Raptors too.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: I have a Hennessy Raptor R.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Oh, those are hard.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: It's fun. That's a beautiful truck.
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: Thank you. There's something about those kinds of trucks too.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: That's exciting. thousand horsepower trucks are ridiculous. It's like, how
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: do they look at that thing flying in the air?
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: That's so crazy. Do you ever take it on the dunes?
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: I haven't yet.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: When they, when I bought it, they came out to, uh,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: they came out to the desert and brought a couple
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: and we just whipped them around the desert and we're
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: supposed to plan a day where we go out and
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: jump and do everything. And they're like, we'll even let
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: you use one of your, our trucks. So we don't
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: fuck up yours. I was like, Oh, that's nice. Appreciate that. Yeah.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: Because it is all carbon fiber fenders. It's pretty cool.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so they stretched it out and widened the wheelbase
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: and everything.
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: Yeah. And you can't even buy them in the States. Like,
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: you have to, I mean, in California, you have to,
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I had to ship it from Vegas because of all
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: of the extras because it's supercharged.
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: So California won't let you buy it?
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: Mm-mm.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: Oh, God. I had to go through this process of
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: pretending I bought it somewhere else.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: That's so sad. Yeah. What a goofy fucking state.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: But I'm, yeah, super happy with it.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: We are doing another studio. We're going to do a
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: studio at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack. And so.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Like this.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. At that place. that racetrack. Sick. So, which
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: is in Austin. And so what we're going to do
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: is have it set up where you're going to be
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: able to go around the track. We'll, we'll, you know,
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: do some laps and then pull in and then have
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: a podcast.
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: I love that.
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: Which would be great. Cause you'll, I feel like for
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: your mind, your mind will be so jazzed up after
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: you do a bunch of laps on a racetrack that you'll,
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: you'll come in.
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: You'll be like, ah, oh, ready to go for sure.
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: It'll be really fun.
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: Cause I bet some people rile themselves up like to
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: come up in here and get really nervous or like,
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: Yeah, some people do.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: Well, you've done it a bunch. You and I have
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: talked and hung out before, so it's easy. But for
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: some people, it's like doing anything that's got a lot
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: of views gets them weirded out. It's hard.
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I think you were honestly one of the
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: first podcasts I did, besides Rich Roll back in the day.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: How's Rich doing?
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: He's great.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: Is he okay? He had some health issues, right?
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: I think. I think he just had like a back
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: surgery or something. But he's all, man, he's so cool.
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: He reached out, I mean, he just reached out a
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: couple days ago saying, I love your doc and I'd
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: really love to talk to you again. So I'll definitely
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: visit him. But when I started my running journey, He
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: had reached out and was like, anything you need?
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: Oh, that's cool.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: Yeah, he's always been so cool.
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: Yeah, very, very nice guy. But yeah, I'd read something
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: about him having back problems. And I always get sad
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: when I hear about people that have back problems and
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: I hear they had surgery. Oh, he looks fucking great.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Looks like he's healthy.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Fucking shredded.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: I feel like if you're running all the time or
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: training all the time, you're bound to have some type
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: of injury too.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: The back thing scares me, though, when people get surgery
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: because there's a lot of options other than surgery that
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: are probably going to be better for most people. Yeah.
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: Depending upon the situation.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: Of course. I broke my back in four places in
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: my accident.
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: Oh, Jesus.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: And I didn't know about it because I was laid
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: out in a burn center for six months. And I
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: never got any surgeries. Like, my doctor exactly said what
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: you just said. He's like, you healed perfect. Like, it's
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: me doing surgery. I can't guarantee you'd be in a
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: better place. place than you are.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: Now yeah so i have friends that have had back
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: surgery and they have gotten better because of the back
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: surgery but i also have a lot of friends that
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: got back surgery and they never were the same again
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: and they had to get another back surgery then another
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: one and they have nerve damage then their arms go
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: numb and then they have atrophy in their limbs and.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: Surgery sketch Well, it can be, but.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: There's other ways around it when it comes to like
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: disc issues. And this is one of the things that
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: I try to highlight to people. There's PRP. There's a
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: place in L.A. and Santa Monica called LifeCycle. Is that it?
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: But they do something called Regenequin. And Regenequin is a
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: type of– I've gone to them a bunch of times.
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: How can I not remember the name of it? Isn't
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: it LifeCycle? LifeCycle Santa Monica? Yeah. Lifespan. What's that? Lifespan. Lifespan. Sorry. Lifespan,
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: Santa Monica. Lifespan Medicine. Phenomenal place. Shout out to Moshe,
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: my friend there. But they do PRP, but it's a
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: different kind of PRP. It's called Regenequin. And what they
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: do is they take your blood. They pull it out
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: of your body. They spin it in a centrifuge and
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: do some sort of process to it. And then they
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: re-inject it into you the next day. Into the discs.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: And it's an insanely potent anti-inflammatory agent. And it was
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: the first thing that I did that ever fixed my
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: bulging discs. Where I had bulging discs in my neck
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: to the point where I was getting numbness in my fingers. Yeah,
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: all from jujitsu. Damn. And it was really getting me
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: to the point where I was like, I don't think
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: I can train anymore. Like every time I train, I'm
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: in agony. Like it keeps getting worse. And I would
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: go to a chiropractor and he was full of shit
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: and they weren't helping me at all. And then this
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: Regenequin thing, and like within a week, I started feeling better.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: Two weeks later, no more numbness, no more tingling in
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: my fingers. And then within a couple of months after that,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: I was fully healed. I got another MRI. My disc
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: had completely gone back in place.
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: Wow, that's game-changing.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: Yeah, because it was pulling, it was pushing out and
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: pressing against the nerve, and it was causing pain, like
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: nerve pain in my elbow. It was the ulnar nerve,
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: same nerve that you were talking about.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: It's scary, right, when you start... Getting like tingly feelings
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: in your fingers and you can't feel them.
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: Yeah. It was also one of these things where I
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: was like, okay, I think I might be done with jujitsu.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Like this is a real problem. But I got back
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: into it because of this. So the Regenequin fixed that.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: And then I've also had stem cells now. Like stem cells,
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: especially if you go to a place that really is
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: on top of everything. And they're using state-of-the-art stem cell technology.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: Like there's a lot of places you have to go
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: out of the country, like CPI down in Mexico.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: So I was going to ask you, is there places
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: in the States now?
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: Ways to Well. Ways to Well right here in Austin
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: is the best place I've ever been to. I haven't
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: been to the places overseas, but I've had phenomenal results
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: with Ways to Well. And I brought a bunch of
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: people in that have had phenomenal. We just brought John
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Jones in recently. He's got hip problems. His hip feels
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: much better, he said. We brought a bunch of MMA
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: fighters in. Aljamain Sterling, who was just here a couple
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: days ago, he was there at Waste to Well on Monday.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: And so Waste to Well, as like my friend Brigham,
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: who runs it, it's literally like state of the art.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: Whatever the fucking science is at the moment, he's on
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: top of it. And they've got hyperbaric chambers. They got
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: red light therapy they've got every every single method of
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: treating injuries and recovery they they're always on top of
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: everything they have a full gym down there it's really
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: sick it's an awesome place But for you, either when
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: you're out here, if you ever want to get treated,
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: if there's something wrong, if you have an injury, you
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: could definitely go here to Wastewell. You could also go
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: to Tijuana. Tijuana, where the CPI is, that's the place
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: that has the– they have a partnership with the UFC,
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: the Cellular Performance Institute in Tijuana. Amazing place. Wow. I
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: know the guys who run it, and that's another very
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: similar state-of-the-art place. But they aren't restricted with the type
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: of– there's different restrictions in America in terms of what
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: you can and can't do. Down there, it's the Wild West.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: You can kind of do anything. And so I know
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: a lot of people that have had pretty phenomenal results
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: going there.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm wondering. I have this gene, Factor V, where
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: I clot really easy. So I wonder if I could
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: Let's find out. Why would that.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: Like, for example, I can't do IVs.
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: Really? Mm-mm. How come?
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: Because I have really thick blood. I have a blood disorder. Wow, wow.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: I clot really easy.
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: And that's a genetic variant?
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I didn't really know about it when my
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: accident happened. I had a bunch of clots. And just
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: so I put a filter that lives in my body forever.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: It's like a permanent filter that kind of like funnels
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: the blood so it doesn't get stuck.
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: Where's the filter?
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: It's like between my back and my stomach.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, to stop anything coming up like big clots from
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: my leg.
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: To my heart or my head.
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: A filter?
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: What's it made out of?
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: It's plastic, unfortunately. Because I've read a bunch about them.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: I went on this whole journey because when I found
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: out about it, and they said we had to put
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: this in you or you could have died because you
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: had huge clots. But you can't remove it. And they
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: have a life expectancy of about 20 years. And then
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: sometimes the filter breaks inside of you.
- 1:50:36Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: It could cause whatever. But, yeah, just have PMA, positive
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: mental attitude. It's not going to happen.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: How long ago did you get it put in?
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: It was like my accident, whatever year that was, 2008.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: So it was almost 20 years ago. So you might
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: have to get it taken out and get a new one?
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: You can't take it out.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: It's cemented to the wall. Oh! Yeah, so you can't
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: do anything with it. Now, about 10 years later, they
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: started making ones that are removable. Is that it? Yeah,
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: mine's not removable. IBC filter. Yeah, that's exactly it.
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: They can't take it out and put a new one
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: in that's removable? Mm-mm. You sure?
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: Positive.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: That seems crazy.
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: They say the surgery to take it out would be
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: more life-threatening than leaving it in.
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: And so what happens if this thing breaks and fails?
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: So ironically, it could do the same thing a clock
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: would do. It would go up to your heart or
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: your head, kill you.
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: Oh, fuck, man. That's it, huh? IVC filter, device to
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: stop blood clots and prevent them from traveling to the
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: heart and lungs. Wow. Do you have to take any
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: kind of medication for this?
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: Just blood thinner when I fly. Okay.
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: Only when you fly?
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: Because I know I– or if I'm on a tour
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: bus for long, long periods of time, I got to
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: take a blood thinner. But then I don't take them
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: every day because it's also a risk to be on
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: blood thinners and if you get in a car accident
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: And you kind of cut.
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: Yeah. But honestly, I forget about it. I forget it's
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: even in there. But, yeah, just like– but, you know,
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: how some people will go on– they'll do a marathon
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: and then they'll get an IV. I can't do that. Wow.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: I just have to really be cautious about getting poked. Um, yeah,
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: I had a, I had a, an incident that happened
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: years ago where someone was just trying to find my
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: vein and she had poked me tons of times, this nurse,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: and I had 30 clots just in one of my arms.
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: Holy fuck, dude.
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: So yeah, I've also learned the, the lesson of not
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: being really cautious in what happens, you know?
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: So.
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: I can't believe you still spar when you have that.
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: That seems nuts because, like, you get leg kicked and
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: develop a clot in your legs.
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I could. My doctor's pretty cool, and he doesn't
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: over-worry about too much or anything. He said I'd rather
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: you not have a blood thinner in your system if
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: you're playing drums and you cut yourself open or if
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: you're boxing or light sparring. So, yeah, knock on wood.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: So it's called Factor V.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: Factor V. Yeah.
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: And it's just a rare genetic condition? Yeah. Wow.
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: Well, I think a lot of people have it. I
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: don't know how rare it is, but yeah, you can
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: have half a gene or a full gene, and I
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: have the full one. So I'm really prone to clotting,
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: where my kids, like my one daughter, Alabama, she has
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: half of it. So it's not as concerning, but she
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: has to be cautious.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: Huh. Whoa.
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: And is there anything you can do with supplements or
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: anything like that that aids that?
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: Like a natural blood thinner is beet juice or like
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: beet shots. So I pretty much have one every day.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: Baby aspirin.
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: Beet juice is supposed to aid also in like oxygen utilization, right? Yeah,
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: I mean it was the pre- I think Rich Roll
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: is actually the guy who told me about that.
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: It was the pre-workout before pre-workouts.
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, people would just slam beet juice or a
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: shot of beet juice. I do it every show.
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: Beet juice?
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. Beet juice like an hour before you go on stage.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: Drinking about one cup, 250 milliliters of beetroot juice daily
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: can help lower systolic blood pressure, the top number, by
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: a few points. The natural dietary nitrates in beets convert
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: into nitric oxide in your body, which relaxes and widens
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: your blood vessels to improve blood flow. Oh, so it's
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: like nature's Viagra. Yeah, it is.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Basically, yeah. That and ginseng are my go-tos.
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: Ginseng.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: I love ginseng.
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: Ginseng is awesome for energy. So good, yeah. It's kind
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: of amazing how many different natural remedies there are that
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: really work. And we were all sort of brainwashed when
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: we were younger to think that the only thing that's
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: good for you are drugs from a pharmaceutical company. That
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: if you have anything wrong with you, the medicine is
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: all medicine that's petroleum-based pharmaceutical drug medicine. And that's what's
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: good for you. All that other herbal stuff is all
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: for retards. It's all for nonsense and hippies and people
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: that don't read books.
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: Well, because they brainwash us, right?
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: I don't take any medicine. I don't take Advil, Tylenol.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: Anything.
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: That stuff, the thing about Tylenol or Advil, I should say,
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: for people. people that take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, that
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: stuff is terrible for your gut.
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: Isn't Tylenol super bad for you now?
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: Well, Tylenol, well, there was a really sad story that
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: I read during the pandemic of this lady who had
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: COVID and she was in so much pain that she
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: kept pounding Tylenol and she died from liver toxicity. Because Tylenol,
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: which has acetaminophen in it, Kills people every year. How
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: many people, I know we've looked this up before, but
- 1:56:18Speaker 2: I don't remember the number, but it's not a small
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: number of people die from acetaminophen poisoning from things like
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: Tylenol every year. It's quite a few. Damn. Yeah. It's
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: like you would think, oh, Tylenol is not going to
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: kill you. It's just like a pill. And it won't
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: if you just take one or if you take two
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: or whatever you're supposed to take. But if you take
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: a lot, you're fucked. 500 deaths per year, largely through
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: overdose-related acute liver failure. Some estimates put it at roughly,
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: what does that mean, 458, about 500, reasonably shorthand.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: Acetaminophen is fucking poisoning. It can get you, you know,
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: if you take a lot of it. And I don't
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: think that's the same with ibuprofen. I don't think there's
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: a lot of ibuprofen deaths. But I do know that
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: my friend Cam Haynes, who runs.
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: I love Cam.
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: Have you ever met him?
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we run together.
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:57:10Speaker 2: No shit.
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: He actually did one of my, you know how I
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: was saying I'm, like, really into tempo training, where, like,
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: you'll tempo train, you'll do, like, a vigorous, like, resistance weights,
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: and then you'll sprint. You know, he came and did
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: one with me, and he was like, fuck, Trev. He
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: was like, that was a lot, you know? And we
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: went on, we run anytime he's in L.A. I love Cam. Like,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: people get so pissed that we're friends.
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: Why?
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: Because they're like, how do you like someone that hunts?
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: I'm like, cause that's my guy. I love him. I
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: don't care if he hunts. I don't care who he
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: votes for. I don't care what he eats. Like that's
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: my dog. He gave me a bow. It was so cool.
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: We shot it at my studio. Um, it was so,
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: he's so cool. And I think likewise, probably a bunch
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: of people were like, why are you homies with a
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: vegan cam? Whatever, whatever, whatever people think, you know, like we, uh,
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: I love cam.
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: I think there's way more accepting people on the other
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: side than the vegan side. The vegan side is very hardcore.
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: Those people get very adamant about like not being around
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: other people that don't share their values or.
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: I don't care what anyone does.
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: That's good.
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: You know, I love everyone the same. I don't care
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: what president you vote for. I don't care if you're gay, straight.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: I don't, I don't care about anything. You know, I just,
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: judge people if they're a good person you.
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: Know I agree um and that's how we all should be.
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: But yeah I met I met Cam I showed up
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: to uh I actually showed up to Tom and um
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: Burt's like 5k it was the first time I ever
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: ran and um I just showed up my my homie
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: Toby invited me and I said fuck I'll go run
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: a 5k whatever I've never ran a 5k I always
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: run by myself just because I like running and I
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: show up there and uh right when I get to
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: the starting line Cam greets me and I don't know
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: who he is He's like, what are you going to
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: pace today? What's your number? And I'm like, fuck if
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: I know. And he's like, what about you? And he
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: gave me some number and he's like, what are you
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: going to do? I said, I'm going to try to
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: keep up. And I just ran my ass off. Like
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: I just like tried to keep up with Cam. And
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: then we just stayed friends after that.
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: And I did pretty, pretty good in that 5K. I
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: actually did way better than I thought I would have,
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: And then we became friends.
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: He's one of my best friends.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: Yeah, he's great.
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: I love him to death.
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: Such a good guy.
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: What I was getting at was that he was taking ibuprofen.
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: He was taking 800 milligrams a day. And I didn't
- 1:59:38Speaker 2: know he was taking that much. And I was talking
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: to him on the phone once, and he was telling me, yeah,
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: I take 800 milligrams a day. I was like, whoa,
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: wait a minute. How much? I go, you do that
- 1:59:47Speaker 2: every day? And I go, why? He goes, I'm in pain.
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: I'm in pain all the time, and I want to
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: keep running. And so then I sent him some information
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: that Dr. Rhonda Patrick put out about the problem with ibuprofen,
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: the problem with taking large doses of it on a
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: regular basis and what it does to your gut biome.
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: So he stopped taking it. He said, well, fuck, I
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: don't want to ruin my body. Let me just stop
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: taking it. The pain that he was experiencing went away
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: after he stopped taking 800 milligrams of ibuprofen a day.
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: And he realized that the pain that he was experiencing
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: was accentuated by the fact that he was causing inflammation
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: in his body by taking anti-inflammatories that were destroying his
- 2:00:28Speaker 2: gut biome. Because his gut was messed up. Exactly. So
- 2:00:33Speaker 2: he's taking all this 800 milligrams of ibuprofen every day.
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: It's torching his gut biome. That's causing this cascade of
- 2:00:40Speaker 2: inflammatory responses in his body. And he's in pain all
- 2:00:44Speaker 2: the time. He gets off of the ibuprofen. The pain
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: goes away. Damn. Isn't that wild?
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: But you get brainwashed into thinking, I need all these things. Meanwhile,
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: turmeric and curcumin, and there's a bunch of different anti-inflammatories
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: that don't cause any sort of gut disturbance. And they're
- 2:01:01Speaker 2: much better for you and healthy. And you can, you know,
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: get them from food.
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: Yeah, all the natural stuff. And then I feel like
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: contrast therapy is so helpful too, you know?
- 2:01:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: Like doing sauna cold plunge, sauna cold plunge. Oh, yeah.
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: Anytime I'm injured, that's what I go to. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: I hit up Cam actually one time, and I was like, Cam,
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: I just did a half marathon. I'm about to do
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: another one. What do you suggest? He's like, Trav, get
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: yourself an elk. I was like, Cam, remember who you're
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: talking to, you know?
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: So for you, is the vegan thing just all animals?
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: It's an animal love thing?
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: No, it wasn't even– it is that. Like I am
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: kind of under the– The thought process of if I
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: have a dog and I love a dog, I kind
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: of love all animals, right? I love all animals the same.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: I'm not like, I'm going to eat that one. I'm
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: going to shoot that one, but I love my dog.
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: It's a little contradicting to me, but I didn't even
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: know any of these things at a young age.
- 2:02:04Speaker 2: I remember.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: Food would be put in front of me and there
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: would be ham, whatever, and I would just naturally put
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: the ham in my pocket. and eat like the mac
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: and cheese or whatever else, the spinach. And cause my
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: dad had this rule. He's like, you eat everything. You
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: don't get up from the fucking table straight up. I
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: don't care if you're there for three hours that that's
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: what it was. Cause your mom spent time making the food.
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: You got to eat the food. You don't leave the table.
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: So I'd pocket it. And then my mom, my mom
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: would find it when she'd go wash clothes. So it
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: started like that. And then next was, Oh, ham is
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: actually this hot dog is actually this. Hamburger is this.
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: And I'm like, whoa, I just thought hamburger was a hamburger.
- 2:02:44Speaker 2: I didn't realize it was cow meat.
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: So I just naturally didn't like, I was already like
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: not liking the taste or the texture.
- 2:02:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: So it was like, okay, whatever. And so vegetarian from
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: the time I was a kid all the way up
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: until my accident. And then after my accident, vegan. So
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: it wasn't really about animals. It was just. At that time,
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: it was like I just wasn't drawn to eat that stuff.
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: That's not what I was into.
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: What about eggs?
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: I loved bean and cheese burritos. I grew up on
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: bean and cheese burritos from Bakers.
- 2:03:15Speaker 2: I love a good bean and cheese burrito.
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: Yeah, from where I grew up, you know? Good bean
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: and cheese.
- 2:03:19Speaker 2: Burrito with hot sauce?
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't beat it. So that's kind of like
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: what I was raised on.
- 2:03:23Speaker 2: But there's cheese in bean and cheese burritos.
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so I wasn't vegan until 20 years ago. So
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: I would have dairy.
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: But do you ever eat eggs? Never.
- 2:03:32Speaker 4: No?
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: You know, if you have your own chickens... It's a
- 2:03:34Speaker 2: pretty karma-free food. It's like I have chickens. I have
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: 19 chickens, and they're pets. So they wander around the yard,
- 2:03:43Speaker 2: have a good time. I'm like, hey, ladies. They have
- 2:03:45Speaker 2: no cruelty. No one's doing anything bad to them. They
- 2:03:49Speaker 2: go into their nest boxes and they lay eggs. And
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: then you just gather the eggs. The eggs will never
- 2:03:54Speaker 2: be a chicken because they're not fertilized. It's just food.
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:03:58Speaker 2: It's just free food. I mean, it's not free. You
- 2:04:00Speaker 2: pay for chicken food and you take care of them
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: and all that stuff. But I mean, in terms of like,
- 2:04:04Speaker 2: it's karma free.
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: No one's getting hurt. Like literally no one is getting hurt.
- 2:04:09Speaker 2: The chickens will lay an egg almost every day.
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: And so we have like baskets of eggs in my house.
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: We always have eggs.
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: I think for whatever, for whatever reason now it's like, anything.
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: And there, wait, and there's this amazing, it's actually, I
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: think they, they market it as a protein, a vegan protein,
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: but you make egg whites out of it and it's phenomenal.
- 2:04:30Speaker 2: What's it made of?
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: And it has the same amount of protein as egg
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: whites do.
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: Does it have the same amino acid profile?
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: I think so. Maybe if it, see if it comes up.
- 2:04:39Speaker 2: What is it called?
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: Um, I have it in my phone somewhere, but I
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: don't have my phone.
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: Jimmy would probably find it.
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's like, It's like, and it's not just
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: egg or one of the basic ones. It's one that
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: my daughter had sent me and it's bananas. You make
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: omelets out of it and it's just incredible. And you
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: get tons of protein. But I think after I ate
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: beef jerky in a hospital for six months, I was like, peace.
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: I'm going to be vegan. Watch this. And then I
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: stopped like, I stopped kind of having anything that came
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: from animals, period, just to see what it would be like. Like,
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: I don't have honey, eggs.
- 2:05:19Speaker 2: Even honey?
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: Yeah, no honey. And I just feel fucking good. Like,
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: I have tons of energy. I can, I have no
- 2:05:28Speaker 1: lack of energy, you know? I feel great. I feel
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: like I operate, like, I don't know, just feel the
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: best I've ever felt like how I am right now.
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think everyone's different.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:05:41Speaker 2: And that's one of the cool things about having a
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: bunch of different diets out there is a bunch of
- 2:05:44Speaker 2: different options for people to try and find whatever works
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: for you.
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Even within my family, like my one daughter is vegetarian.
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: My son eats meat. My wife eats meat. My youngest
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: son has meat sometimes. It's like. Whatever everyone decides is
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: what I'm cool with, you know?
- 2:06:01Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: And that's just what works for me.
- 2:06:03Speaker 2: That's a great attitude. But I think you also have
- 2:06:05Speaker 2: it dialed in. Like you have whatever diet you're on
- 2:06:08Speaker 2: dialed in where you know you're getting the right amount
- 2:06:10Speaker 2: of protein. And there's quite a few different plant sources
- 2:06:14Speaker 2: of protein that have a complete amino acid profile. Yeah.
- 2:06:19Speaker 2: I know hemp is one.
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: Those perfect aminos that Gary makes, those are a game changer.
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: You take five in the morning, five at night, game changer. Yeah.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: But it was. I won't say it's not hard to
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: dial it in. It is difficult to dial it in.
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: You've got to navigate just like anything else, right?
- 2:06:39Speaker 2: Right. There's so many people that they go vegan, but
- 2:06:41Speaker 2: then they just eat vegan pizza. Crossroads, your restaurant, I
- 2:06:46Speaker 2: still have never been, but everybody that I know that
- 2:06:48Speaker 2: went says it's fucking phenomenal. Even Dana, who does not
- 2:06:52Speaker 2: like vegan food, he's like, dude, it's fucking incredible. He goes,
- 2:06:56Speaker 2: it's incredible.
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think when– you probably don't know what to expect, right,
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: when you go to a plant-based restaurant.
- 2:07:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: But Tal Ronan, the chef from Crossroads, is just– he's incredible.
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: And the food, it's an afterthought that you ate something
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: that was vegan. It's not even on the menu that
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: it's plant-based.
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: That's awesome. There's a place in the valley that I
- 2:07:17Speaker 2: used to go to all the time. can't remember the
- 2:07:19Speaker 2: name of it now escaping me was.
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: It follow your heart yes i go every day.
- 2:07:24Speaker 2: Yes that's it that place is great yeah that's another
- 2:07:27Speaker 2: completely plant-based restaurant we used to go there all the
- 2:07:30Speaker 2: time yeah it's so good in la yeah follow your
- 2:07:33Speaker 2: heart was pretty close.
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: Yeah they have a they have a little cafe where
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: you can eat in a grocery store supplements and stuff it's.
- 2:07:40Speaker 2: Yeah it's great their nut burger very good yeah it's
- 2:07:44Speaker 2: like really i would crave it.
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: Yeah that's cool i'm I love just everyone being open-minded.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I'll try anything.
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:07:55Speaker 2: For me, personally, what I've tried, I eat more meat
- 2:07:59Speaker 2: than anything. I eat mostly meat, mostly wild game, but
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: I eat a lot of ribeyes and steak and that
- 2:08:05Speaker 2: just makes me feel the best. You know, I don't
- 2:08:08Speaker 2: love animal cruelty. I don't like it. I don't think
- 2:08:11Speaker 2: it's good in any way, shape or form, but I
- 2:08:13Speaker 2: also realize that animals eat animals. Life eats life. Yeah.
- 2:08:16Speaker 2: And this is just, and The thing about hunting is
- 2:08:21Speaker 2: I'm in complete contact with where my food's coming from.
- 2:08:26Speaker 2: I know the source of it. I'm there when the
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: animal dies. I'm there. I do it. I participate in
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: the whole thing. I carry it out of the woods.
- 2:08:35Speaker 2: I cut it up. bring it to a butcher shop
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: and have it, you know, packaged in the steaks.
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: I'm thinking of Cam right now because when he was
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: in my neighborhood, you know, we have deer in Calabasas.
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: He was eyeballing them.
- 2:08:47Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: He was eyeballing them. I'm like, don't even fucking think
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: about it. Of course he was. Yeah. He was like, oh,
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: look at that. Look at that.
- 2:08:55Speaker 2: Right behind the shoulder.
- 2:08:56Speaker 1: I'm looking at him like, oh, look at the cool
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: family of deer. He's like, oh, shit, that's like food.
- 2:09:00Speaker 2: You know? It's food.
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: It's so funny.
- 2:09:03Speaker 2: Well, especially him.
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: But, yeah, I totally... Like I said, I get it,
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: you know?
- 2:09:08Speaker 2: It's cool that you're so open-minded about that, that you do,
- 2:09:12Speaker 2: and you're not judgmental. I think that's a great attitude
- 2:09:15Speaker 2: to have, that more people should adopt with everything, with
- 2:09:17Speaker 2: political ideologies, religion, whatever it is. Just don't fuck with me.
- 2:09:22Speaker 2: I won't fuck with you. I'd like to hear your
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: opinions on things, because I'd like to know where people,
- 2:09:27Speaker 2: where they form their thoughts from. What's your perspective?
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I hate when anyone from... either side
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: of things are so aggressive that we're like, you just
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: bum everybody out, you know?
- 2:09:41Speaker 2: They do, and I also think that a lot of
- 2:09:43Speaker 2: times it's not coming from a healthy place to begin with.
- 2:09:46Speaker 2: I think a lot of people find a thing that
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: they can use as an excuse to be an asshole.
- 2:09:53Speaker 2: And whether that thing is their political beliefs or their
- 2:09:56Speaker 2: religion or whatever their social ideology, whatever it is, They
- 2:10:01Speaker 2: find a thing that they can call you out because
- 2:10:04Speaker 2: you fuck you. You're the fucking reason, man. Fuck you, man.
- 2:10:08Speaker 2: And it's just what's really going on is they're just
- 2:10:11Speaker 2: looking for a reason to be an asshole. And they're
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: not a balanced person or a happy, healthy person. It's
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: one thing if someone is confronting you personally and yelling
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: at you and you're yelling back at them and you're
- 2:10:25Speaker 2: in an argument. But if you're starting that, initiating that,
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: Because someone disagrees with you or doesn't see things the
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: way they're doing, first of all, you're a shitty communicator.
- 2:10:36Speaker 2: And two, you're probably a shitty person because that's why
- 2:10:39Speaker 2: you're behaving the way you're behaving. And you're using this point,
- 2:10:42Speaker 2: whatever it is, whether it's being a vegan or being
- 2:10:45Speaker 2: a Republican or being a Democrat or being a Muslim
- 2:10:48Speaker 2: or being a Christian or whatever the fuck it is
- 2:10:50Speaker 2: that you've decided is more important than being civil and
- 2:10:54Speaker 2: kind and courteous. What you really are is just a
- 2:10:58Speaker 2: shitty version of a person. Whether you realize it or not,
- 2:11:01Speaker 2: you probably don't even– probably think you're justified and that's
- 2:11:04Speaker 2: why you're doing it and you probably think I'm doing
- 2:11:05Speaker 2: the right thing. And everyone is like, I love it
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: that you have no chill. He's got no chill. He's
- 2:11:11Speaker 2: a cunt. This guy is a cunt and he's a
- 2:11:14Speaker 2: miserable and sufferable person to be around regardless of what
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: his belief system is versus the other person's belief system.
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: And if he had– A perspective that was, I don't
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: know why you think the way you think, but I
- 2:11:25Speaker 2: think differently. Let's have a conversation. You might find common ground. Yeah, totally.
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: You might be able to realize like, oh, you can
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: have friends that don't think the way you think. I
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: have friends that are Muslims. I have friends that are atheists.
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: I have gay friends. I have a ton of friends
- 2:11:41Speaker 2: that are completely different than me. And that's fine. There's
- 2:11:44Speaker 2: nothing wrong with that. I love them. It's great. Everyone
- 2:11:48Speaker 2: doesn't have to be you. Everyone doesn't have to be
- 2:11:50Speaker 2: the same as you, nor do they have to agree
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: with you. But there's too many people that what they're
- 2:11:55Speaker 2: looking for is some reason why they're right and some
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: reason to be an asshole to other people that don't
- 2:12:02Speaker 2: think the same way they think. And they think that
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: they're justified by it. And I think it's a real problem.
- 2:12:07Speaker 2: It's also a real problem with social media because those people,
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: their voices get amplified and people pile in, yeah, you go, boy,
- 2:12:14Speaker 2: or you go, girl.
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: I feel like anyone who can look at I mean,
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: social media, it's corny to begin with, right? But you're
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: going to go on Instagram and then you're going to
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: say something extreme or fucked up to someone. It's like, dude,
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: you're so, you're so lame. Like that you actually took
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: the time to think about writing something bad, then wrote it,
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: then press send. Like you're fucked up.
- 2:12:37Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: Like straight up. Like anyone that's going to say or
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: spew negativity, I'm like.
- 2:12:41Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I just– It's just weakness. No place for it.
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: Yeah. It's just weakness. And I guarantee you you're not
- 2:12:47Speaker 2: doing the maximum amount you should be doing with your life,
- 2:12:50Speaker 2: with whatever you're pursuing.
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: You're not– They're lacking somewhere.
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: Optimized for sure. 100%. That's why they choose the time
- 2:12:58Speaker 2: to just lash out at people or mischaracterize people or
- 2:13:03Speaker 2: have the least charitable take on people. It's usually they're lacking.
- 2:13:08Speaker 2: They're usually at least somewhat mediocre. There's usually some flaw
- 2:13:12Speaker 2: in their game and what they're doing. And they're lashing
- 2:13:15Speaker 2: out at other people, which is fine. But it's also
- 2:13:18Speaker 2: like other people can learn from that too. Like, God,
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: that guy seems like a cunt. And then don't be
- 2:13:22Speaker 2: a cunt. You know, realize that and go, oh, okay. Yeah,
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: I kind of see that in myself sometimes. Maybe we
- 2:13:27Speaker 2: should do a little self-correction.
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like, I don't ever want to be like that. Exactly.
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: That's great. Exactly.
- 2:13:33Speaker 2: Exactly. or the opposite. When someone's like, has like a
- 2:13:38Speaker 2: really objective, charitable take on someone like, Hey man, maybe
- 2:13:43Speaker 2: he thinks this way. And you know, maybe the right
- 2:13:46Speaker 2: way to approach it is to approach someone civilly and
- 2:13:49Speaker 2: we can find common ground. Like some, you read someone
- 2:13:52Speaker 2: saying something like that and you go, Oh, I want
- 2:13:54Speaker 2: to be more like that guy. Like that guy, like,
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: I like the way that guy thinks like that. That's
- 2:13:58Speaker 2: inspiring to me. Like that to me, like that's probably
- 2:14:01Speaker 2: a cool person to have a conversation with. They're not
- 2:14:03Speaker 2: going to be They're not going to use it as
- 2:14:05Speaker 2: an excuse to be aggressive, an excuse to be shitty
- 2:14:08Speaker 2: and insulting and mean because you're not changing anybody's opinion
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: when you do that. You're just not. And will you
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: get the peanut gallery to pile in? Great. So you've
- 2:14:18Speaker 2: got team cunt. You've got a little cunt farm behind
- 2:14:22Speaker 2: you and you're all attacking all these other people and
- 2:14:24Speaker 2: you think somehow or another you're justified because there's some
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: other flawed people that agree with you. That you're allowed
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: to be shitty to people because they don't think the
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: way you think or because they only eat plants or
- 2:14:35Speaker 2: because they worship this god. Come on.
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like David Goggins has it figured out
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: how he just listens to all his haters or whatever
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: and he runs or exercises. That's the shit. Use it
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: as a tool.
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're better off not even listening to
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: the haters. He's insane. Every time I talk to him,
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: I'm like, you're so insane.
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean... Like I said, yeah. Anyone that's going
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: to say anything is so, so lame right off the jump.
- 2:15:02Speaker 2: Yeah. But there's a lot of lame people in this world, unfortunately,
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: because there's a lot of people that don't have a,
- 2:15:07Speaker 2: you know, it's hard to be a person. It's complicated.
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: People don't have a guidebook on how to be a
- 2:15:13Speaker 2: person and be happy.
- 2:15:15Speaker 1: And I think you have to, like, I'm disciplined. Like
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: sometimes I'll read something and I'll be you motherfucker. But
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, no, I can't do what they do.
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: Right?
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: Exactly. I can't stoop to that level.
- 2:15:27Speaker 2: Especially your Travis Barker.
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: You're a famous guy. Like, if you do what they do,
- 2:15:32Speaker 2: it's a different thing. Like, if you go back at them,
- 2:15:35Speaker 2: that is one of the lamest things. When you see
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: celebrities going at, like, fans in the comments, like, what
- 2:15:43Speaker 2: are you? Take your phone away. Take his phone away.
- 2:15:47Speaker 2: Who's letting you do that?
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: We don't want to see you do that. The people
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: who love your music or whatever.
- 2:15:52Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no. How many people have
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: like ruined other people's opinions of them because of doing
- 2:16:00Speaker 2: something like that or going on some lame fucking rant
- 2:16:04Speaker 2: against someone because of the way they voted or the
- 2:16:06Speaker 2: way they view this or the way they, you know,
- 2:16:08Speaker 2: whatever it is.
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: Luckily, like the hate, the hate, like I get the weird,
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: I get the weirdest hate. It's not even really hate,
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: but it's just something like they know they're like throwing
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: darts from across the room at me is like, Oh bro,
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: he's like a Kardashian now. Or he married a Kardashian.
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: I'm like, motherfucker, that's the most punk thing I could
- 2:16:28Speaker 1: do is marry a Kardashian and just say, fuck you.
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: You know what I mean? It's about like the, like
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: that even shows you, I clearly don't give a fuck.
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, and, and my, my
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: wife isn't like, uh, I can't label her like that.
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: She's my wife. She's my soulmate, right? I love her
- 2:16:45Speaker 1: to death. But to think, like, have you seen me change? Well,
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: not at all. Have you seen me, like, dressed? Dog,
- 2:16:53Speaker 1: I dress so different, obviously, than my wife or her family. Like,
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: I continue to be my own person. I look the same.
- 2:17:00Speaker 1: I've wore the same Dickies pants, the same band shoes.
- 2:17:04Speaker 1: I've had the same tattoos that stopped me from getting
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: a real job since I was.
- 2:17:07Speaker 2: 16 years old.
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: Fuck you. You know what I mean? Straight up, fuck you. And, uh,
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: and that's why, I mean, punk rock is not about
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: music either. It's about like, you don't, you don't care
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: what anyone thinks, right? As long as you're going through
- 2:17:20Speaker 1: this world, you're doing, yeah, you are who you are
- 2:17:22Speaker 1: and you're not hurting anybody. That, that's punk rock.
- 2:17:25Speaker 2: I think a lot of people thought it was cool
- 2:17:27Speaker 2: that you guys got together. Like, look at this, two
- 2:17:29Speaker 2: people from totally different worlds that love each other. That's cool.
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: Oh, it's the best. It's the best. It's just only
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: a hater would, would think that other way though, right?
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: You know, um, But if you started getting all your
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: tattoos lasered off and you started wearing designer clothes.
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I started dressing like a lame. and I started, yeah,
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: of course. Like, dude, come for me, you know? Please, please. Uh,
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: but yeah, that's like, that's one that's always like funny
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: to me.
- 2:17:54Speaker 2: I'm like, well, there's a problem with like, you know,
- 2:17:57Speaker 2: whenever there's anything that's happening publicly, you're living your life publicly.
- 2:18:00Speaker 2: There's always going to be hate.
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: Oh yeah. And Wayne said it. Lil Wayne said it
- 2:18:04Speaker 1: a long time ago. I remember he told me, he's like, dog, you, you,
- 2:18:09Speaker 1: You haven't made it until you have haters. You know
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: you're successful the minute motherfuckers start hating on you.
- 2:18:15Speaker 2: Have you ever seen Cat Williams sit on haters? Oh,
- 2:18:18Speaker 2: pull that up.
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: Oh, I bet it's great.
- 2:18:22Speaker 2: He's got a fantastic bit on haters. About people complaining
- 2:18:26Speaker 2: about haters. It's the same kind of thing. Have you
- 2:18:32Speaker 2: found it anywhere? You can't say Cat Williams on haters?
- 2:18:40Speaker 2: I guess it does say haters.
- 2:18:41Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 2:18:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he's got a whole... I think the bit's titled Haters. Okay,
- 2:18:46Speaker 2: give me some volume.
- 2:18:46Speaker 3: Hey, you got to get your motherfucking hustle. Understand niggas
- 2:18:49Speaker 3: is going to hate you regardless. Get that out of
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: your head, that fantasy world where niggas ain't hating on you.
- 2:18:55Speaker 3: You got to be grateful. You need haters. What the
- 2:18:57Speaker 3: fuck is you complaining about? What the fuck do you
- 2:18:59Speaker 3: think a hater's job is? To fucking hate. So let
- 2:19:02Speaker 3: them motherfuckers do their goddamn job.
- 2:19:05Speaker 1: What the fuck is you complaining about?
- 2:19:07Speaker 3: Ladies, if you got 14 women hating on you, you
- 2:19:10Speaker 3: need to figure out how the fuck to get the
- 2:19:11Speaker 3: 16 before the summer get here.
- 2:19:13Speaker 2: What the fuck is.
- 2:19:15Speaker 1: You mad about.
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: Amen if you got 20 haters you need 40 of
- 2:19:21Speaker 3: them motherfuckers what is you complaining about if there's any
- 2:19:23Speaker 3: haters in here right now that don't have nobody to
- 2:19:26Speaker 3: hate on feel free to hate on me sit back
- 2:19:28Speaker 3: there and say my hair ain't luxurious when you know
- 2:19:30Speaker 3: it is.
- 2:19:31Speaker 1: Bitch that's so good so true so true.
- 2:19:38Speaker 2: It comes with the territory. Yeah, yeah. This is the
- 2:19:40Speaker 2: job we chose. This is the life we chose. You're
- 2:19:43Speaker 2: going to get haters. Totally. But it's your obligation to
- 2:19:49Speaker 2: manage the waters. You don't have to dive in and
- 2:19:53Speaker 2: fucking swing in their own shit and waddle around with
- 2:19:58Speaker 2: them like pigs.
- 2:19:59Speaker 1: Totally.
- 2:19:59Speaker 2: It's not necessary. No, but it's a complicated world.
- 2:20:03Speaker 1: Never would I, you know?
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: No. Mm-mm. A lot of people do, unfortunately. But it's
- 2:20:09Speaker 2: also this is a new thing, like this new thing
- 2:20:12Speaker 2: where people have direct access to everybody like that online. If,
- 2:20:16Speaker 2: you know, people choose to be on social media, you
- 2:20:18Speaker 2: have direct access to all kinds of people and they're
- 2:20:21Speaker 2: going to read your comments. And people know that.
- 2:20:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:20:23Speaker 2: If you're a person who reads comments. And so they
- 2:20:25Speaker 2: go and attack you. And it's a weird world that
- 2:20:28Speaker 2: a lot of famous people don't know how to navigate.
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: And a lot of people, they get like severe anxiety
- 2:20:33Speaker 2: because they do read that shit. And then they'll like
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: hold up their home by themselves staring at their phone.
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: You're in a fucking giant mansion living like a baller.
- 2:20:41Speaker 2: You got a Ferrari. Meanwhile, you're in hell.
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: Like I said, yeah, if you're not hurting anybody and
- 2:20:45Speaker 1: it's like, you know what I mean? Like life's good.
- 2:20:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. But also you'll feel better if you're not
- 2:20:52Speaker 2: doing that.
- 2:20:53Speaker 1: Totally. Or they say like if you do read it
- 2:20:56Speaker 1: and you find any truth in it, like it's your
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: chance to fix it, right? It's your chance to whatever
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: or use it as like motivation. You know?
- 2:21:04Speaker 2: Like Goggles does.
- 2:21:05Speaker 1: Yeah, even if the shit they're spewing is so false
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: and fairytale, it's like, still, you know what I mean?
- 2:21:14Speaker 1: Go lift or go box or go play drums or
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: go do whatever you do, you know?
- 2:21:18Speaker 2: Use it as energy.
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: That always feels good because, yeah, none of it really, like,
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: sits with you, you know? It's not supposed to.
- 2:21:25Speaker 2: And I understand haters, too.
- 2:21:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:21:27Speaker 2: I've always said this, that if I was a 15-year-old
- 2:21:29Speaker 2: kid and somebody gave me a Twitter account, I could...
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: get a hold of someone like me and talk shit
- 2:21:33Speaker 2: to them i 100 would oh yeah fuck yeah.
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: As a kid like i don't even know what it
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: would be like because we didn't have it but i
- 2:21:41Speaker 1: also know like from where uh you know punk rock
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: was has always been very finicky very very sensitive right
- 2:21:50Speaker 1: you know if a band gets popular everyone's like i
- 2:21:53Speaker 1: fucking hate them they're on the radio fuck that band
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: they have fans now they can act, they can eat,
- 2:21:58Speaker 1: they can fucking, you know what I mean? Pay rent,
- 2:22:00Speaker 1: fuck them. You know, it's like that, you know, skateboarding,
- 2:22:03Speaker 1: which I like changed my, my life and raised me.
- 2:22:07Speaker 1: Skateboarding is also, they're very strict, you know, about, about
- 2:22:11Speaker 1: who can call themselves a skater or, you know, there's
- 2:22:15Speaker 1: just all the, all these things. There's like, when, when
- 2:22:19Speaker 1: all these things should just be celebrated, like skateboarding is
- 2:22:21Speaker 1: fucking cool. It's like, Some of the coolest people in
- 2:22:24Speaker 1: the world, you know, skateboard and skateboarding's taught most of
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: the world like how to dress properly and serious. Like,
- 2:22:33Speaker 1: I mean, a lot of rappers basically nowadays just dress
- 2:22:37Speaker 1: like skateboarders. Skateboarders like set it off like they had
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: the best taste from the jump.
- 2:22:42Speaker 2: How do you think that happened? How did skateboarders develop
- 2:22:45Speaker 2: such a great sense of style in your opinion?
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know. It's just, it's just one
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: of those things. Like even from back in the day, like.
- 2:22:54Speaker 2: Why that particular activity would have like a whole like
- 2:22:57Speaker 2: style associated with it.
- 2:22:59Speaker 1: I mean, I grew up with like huge pants and
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: like t-shirts and, and just bands, you know, skateboarding and beanies,
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: you know, that's like, I don't know, but everything from
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: the time skate videos were released, They were secretly, maybe
- 2:23:15Speaker 1: they didn't know about it, but they were teaching everyone
- 2:23:17Speaker 1: what the coolest music was. And at the time, music
- 2:23:20Speaker 1: was so categorized. Like you're either a punk rocker, you
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: like country, you like rap, you like that. Skate videos
- 2:23:27Speaker 1: were everything. The illest, best music of every genre. So
- 2:23:32Speaker 1: a bunch of skate kids were growing up listening to
- 2:23:35Speaker 1: Operation Ivy and loving the far side, you know? So
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: it was like happily confused. They just knew the best
- 2:23:43Speaker 1: of every world. It was different, you know?
- 2:23:46Speaker 2: It's just interesting that a style of clothing is associated
- 2:23:50Speaker 2: with a physical activity.
- 2:23:52Speaker 1: Well, then you had Lil Wayne who learned how to
- 2:23:54Speaker 1: skateboard halfway through his career. And I feel like everyone
- 2:23:59Speaker 1: around him looked to him for also style and started
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: dressing like him. Oh, wow.
- 2:24:06Speaker 2: So.
- 2:24:07Speaker 1: And some people don't even know. I feel like punk
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: rock and skateboarding, I mean, Playboi Carti wears punk rock clothes.
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: His whole aesthetic is punk rock. Where did he get
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: it from? He got it from punk rock. It was
- 2:24:22Speaker 1: born there. I hate gatekeepers. I love what he's done
- 2:24:29Speaker 1: with it. And I love that all these new groups
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: of kids that love Carti and love Ken Carson, they're
- 2:24:34Speaker 1: dressing like punkers. They might not even know it. They
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: just think they're dressing like, you know, their favorite rapper.
- 2:24:40Speaker 1: But it stems and it's rooted from punk rock and skateboarding.
- 2:24:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:24:45Speaker 2: I can't think of another activity that has a style
- 2:24:48Speaker 2: associated with it like that.
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, there really isn't. Like BMX people, you know, riders.
- 2:24:53Speaker 2: Well, they have to wear pads and shit.
- 2:24:54Speaker 1: Yeah, they're wearing pads and stuff. I mean, BMX was
- 2:24:56Speaker 1: really cool. I love BMX. But there's nothing like skateboarding.
- 2:25:00Speaker 2: But there's not like a clothing style that's associated with.
- 2:25:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and skateboarding and punk rock were like this.
- 2:25:05Speaker 2: Right. Well, it's rebellion, right?
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:25:07Speaker 2: It's being an outcast. It's doing something that's either frowned
- 2:25:11Speaker 2: upon or only other people that are like you understand it.
- 2:25:14Speaker 1: But it could have been, right? Like, skateboarding could have been... Well,
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: couldn't have been. I can't even say this. But, like,
- 2:25:21Speaker 1: it's a skateboard. It could have been athletic. It could
- 2:25:23Speaker 1: have been sporty.
- 2:25:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:25:25Speaker 1: It was, from the get-go, it was raw.
- 2:25:27Speaker 2: Gritty.
- 2:25:27Speaker 1: And it was gritty, and it was... It's also... One
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: of the hardest things as far as, like, the amount
- 2:25:33Speaker 1: of falls and injuries you take, you've got to be
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: a tough motherfucker to skateboard.
- 2:25:37Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of concussions.
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:25:39Speaker 2: A lot of guys when they're doing tricks fall on
- 2:25:41Speaker 2: their fucking head.
- 2:25:43Speaker 1: The board hitting your shins over and over again, breaking arms,
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: breaking legs.
- 2:25:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: It's a gnarly sport.
- 2:25:50Speaker 2: Especially if you're doing it in these urban environments where
- 2:25:52Speaker 2: people are trying to go down railings.
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: Yeah, street skating. It's just whatever you find while you're
- 2:25:59Speaker 1: skateboarding down the street, you know? Pretty cool.
- 2:26:02Speaker 2: It is interesting that it has a style of clothing
- 2:26:05Speaker 2: and dress associated with it.
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:26:11Speaker 2: And that it kind of mirrors like punk rock aesthetics.
- 2:26:16Speaker 1: Yeah. And both the genres are very protective, you know?
- 2:26:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Weird.
- 2:26:22Speaker 1: It's cool.
- 2:26:22Speaker 2: It is cool.
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: Maybe it should be protected. Maybe that's why it's still
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: so cool.
- 2:26:28Speaker 2: You know? Well, for them, for the people that are
- 2:26:31Speaker 2: protecting it, it means something to them. It's probably their
- 2:26:34Speaker 2: haven from the standard society, the pressures of fitting in
- 2:26:40Speaker 2: and conforming that they don't want. And so this thing
- 2:26:43Speaker 2: is like a church to them. It's like religious.
- 2:26:47Speaker 1: I mean, when I was 13, I felt like an outcast.
- 2:26:51Speaker 1: And it was skaters against jocks where I grew up.
- 2:26:53Speaker 1: It was like jocks and you played football or you were...
- 2:26:57Speaker 1: a skateboarder which basically you listen to punk rock music
- 2:27:01Speaker 1: you listen to faction you listen to dri you listen
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: to whatever and we looked really different so we were
- 2:27:07Speaker 1: we were outcasts.
- 2:27:08Speaker 2: Yeah yeah.
- 2:27:11Speaker 1: All right yeah should we wrap this up yeah it
- 2:27:14Speaker 1: was amazing.
- 2:27:15Speaker 2: Brother always good to see you man so good always
- 2:27:16Speaker 2: good to see you um this documentary when can people
- 2:27:20Speaker 2: watch it.
- 2:27:20Speaker 1: It's out on hulu right now.
- 2:27:25Speaker 2: Right here, and we're looking at the.
- 2:27:27Speaker 1: It's the crash. And when I think about it, I
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: have the worst flashbacks.
- 2:27:32Speaker 2: I've got two on the ground the birds.
- 2:27:38Speaker 4: Over here.
- 2:27:38Speaker 2: Get the in this, man.
- 2:27:45Speaker 1: The last thing my mom said to me, is just
- 2:27:48Speaker 1: play drums.
- 2:27:50Speaker 2: The drums are literally the heartbeat of the musical body.
- 2:27:53Speaker 2: A lot of people came just to watch him. He
- 2:27:56Speaker 2: just had this, oh, you're gonna get picked up by
- 2:27:58Speaker 2: a band, and you will be a star attraction. I
- 2:28:01Speaker 2: told him, you better get yourself a job, boy. And
- 2:28:03Speaker 2: he said, no, Dad.
- 2:28:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna go play in a punk rock band, and
- 2:28:06Speaker 1: I won't have a plan B.
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: It's rough.
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: Mark and Tom come up to me and said, our
- 2:28:13Speaker 1: drummer just left. Would you consider playing? The show starts
- 2:28:17Speaker 1: in an hour. It felt effortless.
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: Things were just exploding.
- 2:28:23Speaker 1: That was quite a wild ride. I was touring with
- 2:28:26Speaker 1: Blink nonstop. I was taking so many pills that I
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: had a security guard whose only job was to watch
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: me sleep and make sure I was breathing. It was
- 2:28:35Speaker 1: all a blur. And then came the crash. Just fire
- 2:28:43Speaker 1: and chaos everywhere. 65% of my body was burnt. 27 surgeries.
- 2:28:51Speaker 2: Falling from the sky like Icarus probably does something to
- 2:28:54Speaker 2: your head. I walk in the room, and I don't
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: cry ever.
- 2:28:59Speaker 1: But we cried, bro. Che and Chris were like brothers
- 2:29:02Speaker 1: to me. And then A.M. passing away a year later.
- 2:29:09Speaker 1: Why am I here when everyone else isn't? I had
- 2:29:12Speaker 1: to ask myself who I was going to be after
- 2:29:14Speaker 1: this accident.
- 2:29:17Speaker 2: I could never truly understand what he went through.
- 2:29:22Speaker 1: I had this burning desire to become the greatest person
- 2:29:25Speaker 1: and father I could be.
- 2:29:28Speaker 2: It changed the whole family and I feel like brought
- 2:29:31Speaker 2: us closer together.
- 2:29:33Speaker 4: We loved him trying to cook for us, going on
- 2:29:36Speaker 4: bike rides.
- 2:29:38Speaker 1: Knowing how close I got to not being here, my
- 2:29:40Speaker 1: appreciation for life is something I can't even explain.
- 2:29:45Speaker 2: Every hit is him communicating his story to the world. And, dude,
- 2:29:52Speaker 2: he has got a crazy story.
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:29:54Speaker 2: That looks awesome.
- 2:30:02Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: Fuck. Thanks, brother.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: Nice meeting you. Thank you.
- 2:30:06Speaker 2: Thank you. Bye, everybody. Bye.
