- 0:00Speaker 1: Ah.
- 0:00Speaker 2: There is a columnist for the Desert News who I
- 0:03Speaker 2: really enjoy. I think she's very smart and funny. Her
- 0:06Speaker 2: name's Meg Walter. We've had her on the show before, Yeah,
- 0:11Speaker 2: when Alpha Con. Remember when Alpha Con was happening and
- 0:14Speaker 2: she like went and they were like, you can't be
- 0:17Speaker 2: here and kicked her out and she wrote a here's
- 0:20Speaker 2: her column today. It is Mark Twain, to whom the
- 0:25Speaker 2: quote write what you know is most often attributed the
- 0:28Speaker 2: advice I try to live by writing about my personal experiences, passions,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and areas of expertise. But there are times when journalism
- 0:34Speaker 2: requires I step beyond my own realm of comfort and
- 0:37Speaker 2: knowledge to better understand the most pressing issues of our
- 0:40Speaker 2: modern day. This week that stepped beyond was into the
- 0:43Speaker 2: men's restroom.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Metaphorically.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I didn't actually walk into the men's restroom, though I
- 0:47Speaker 2: have been before a couple of times on accident, once
- 0:50Speaker 2: when the line from the women's room was really long
- 0:52Speaker 2: and I needed to change a baby's diaper immediately. On
- 0:55Speaker 2: the latter occasion, a man walked in, saw me, shrugged,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and proceeded to use the urnal.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Sure, why not, How.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Nice it must be for men?
- 1:02Speaker 2: I thought at the time to have the ability to
- 1:04Speaker 2: relieve themselves without having to wait in a lengthy line
- 1:07Speaker 2: for a stall.
- 1:08Speaker 1: How nice to not have to worry about the.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Cleanliness of toilet seats or the bacteria that may be
- 1:12Speaker 2: lurking on the stall handles and locks. Man have it
- 1:14Speaker 2: so much easier, I concluded. What I didn't realize, though,
- 1:18Speaker 2: is how much grocermen have it. How so, imagine my
- 1:23Speaker 2: horror upon learning that an estimated one million liters of
- 1:26Speaker 2: urine splashes onto public bathroom floors every day in the
- 1:30Speaker 2: United States thanks to urinal splashback the floor.
- 1:34Speaker 3: In our bathroom in the men's bathroom here.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Sticky and worse that urine sometimes splashes back onto.
- 1:42Speaker 3: The urinator sometimes, I'll be honest.
- 1:45Speaker 2: My initial reaction upon learning this frankly horrifying fun fact
- 1:48Speaker 2: was to judge, to ask the entire male species, how
- 1:51Speaker 2: can you live like that?
- 1:52Speaker 3: I don't. I don't anymore.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But then I remembered my hero, Jane Goodall.
- 1:57Speaker 2: In the way she studies chimpanzees without judgement, it advocates
- 2:00Speaker 2: for conditions that would be better to their existence.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Jane Goodall is here. Thank you Meg for comparing us
- 2:06Speaker 3: to chize. Thanks meg.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Does she judge chimpanzees for baring their teeth when afraid? No, Instead,
- 2:12Speaker 2: she works to create an environment where chimps are not
- 2:15Speaker 2: felt to threatened. So why two am refraining from judging
- 2:18Speaker 2: men for walking out of a restroom with droplets on
- 2:20Speaker 2: their pants or shoes.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You better all bear my teeth at you.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I am instead advocating for a better way, a better urinal.
- 2:28Speaker 2: More specifically, and I have great news there is a
- 2:31Speaker 2: new urinal design in town. Moreover, the inventor of the
- 2:34Speaker 2: television pilot Farnsworth, there is a new greatest inventor coming.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Out of Utah that really is a new urinal.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Weaber State Associate professor doctor Randy Hurd and his collaborator
- 2:45Speaker 2: Zoo Pan at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
- 2:48Speaker 3: They call him the p Doctor.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I've created two new urinal designs, the Cornucopia and the Nautilus.
- 2:56Speaker 4: That's so, one's shaped like a nautilus shell and one
- 2:59Speaker 4: is shaped like a cornucopias.
- 3:01Speaker 2: They reduce splash back to one point four percent of
- 3:06Speaker 2: a typical urinal model.
- 3:07Speaker 3: The horn of plenty.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Okay, quote, I think anyone who used a urinal has
- 3:13Speaker 2: noticed this is an issue, doctor Herd said during our
- 3:15Speaker 2: phone interview, or just look around the floor of any
- 3:17Speaker 2: men's bathroom. There's pete all over the place.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It's everywhere.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I'm going to refrain from looking around on the floor
- 3:24Speaker 2: in any men's bathroom and instead take his word for it,
- 3:27Speaker 2: because if anyone's qualified to understand this issue, it's him.
- 3:30Speaker 1: He has a PhD from Utah.
- 3:31Speaker 2: State University and Mechanical Engineering, and his dissertation was on
- 3:35Speaker 2: fluid dynamics. There you go, specifically impact events of fluid dynamics.
- 3:41Speaker 2: What's his name, doctor Heard? What's his first name? Randy Heard? Okay,
- 3:46Speaker 2: from Weaber State. Bill, you went to I peede.
- 3:48Speaker 3: At Weaber State. I've peede at Weber State many times.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Together, he and Pan discovered that the solution to the
- 3:55Speaker 2: issue that has plagued male peers for centuries came down
- 3:59Speaker 2: to what Heard describe as a simple math problem. If
- 4:02Speaker 2: we can assume that the droplets are coming from an origin,
- 4:05Speaker 2: we can figure out where the line will intersect and
- 4:08Speaker 2: wear at the given angle they will go. If you
- 4:10Speaker 2: can't hit the persona at the right angle, you won't
- 4:12Speaker 2: get the splatter. So it's training the cornycopia, which Herd says,
- 4:18Speaker 2: looks like a urinal from Star Trek is a three
- 4:21Speaker 2: dimensional solution to the splashback problem that reduces.
- 4:24Speaker 5: The angle of the stream. The Nautilus is more simple. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 5: there's there's a picture of Randy Herd here. He looks
- 4:31Speaker 5: like a guy who spends a lot of time thinking
- 4:33Speaker 5: about toilets.
- 4:35Speaker 1: What do you do?
- 4:36Speaker 2: I designed the designs are pending a patent for which,
- 4:39Speaker 2: for the sake of men in my life, is a
- 4:41Speaker 2: process I hope goes quickly.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Isn't this great? Well? I love this.
- 4:46Speaker 3: There is a solution. I very seldom stand up to
- 4:52Speaker 3: pee anymore because you go into the stall.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Yes, because it's because there's no splashback.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I guess I didn't realize this was that big of
- 5:02Speaker 2: a problem.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But I mean it.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Depends. I mean it depends on how strong your stream is.
- 5:12Speaker 4: For one thing, if you're a dribbler, yeah, but then
- 5:15Speaker 4: but then, but even then, there there are problems. I mean,
- 5:19Speaker 4: you you almost always get some on you in one
- 5:23Speaker 4: way or the other.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I guess women have it. Oh, my sister Michael just
- 5:27Speaker 2: texted me. She says, doctor Hurt is one of my BFFs.
- 5:31Speaker 2: She's a professor of the state.
- 5:33Speaker 3: But did you know he spent so much time with toilets?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Did you know he was the toilet guy?
- 5:38Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I I complained about what women have to deal
- 5:45Speaker 2: with in public restrooms, but maybe men do have it worse.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I don't know if they have it worse, But you know,
- 5:50Speaker 4: it's the restroom here. I don't know about the women's restroom,
- 5:54Speaker 4: but the men's is just awful.
- 5:56Speaker 3: It's awful.
- 5:57Speaker 2: No, the women's the women's restroom here. At the soap dispenser,
- 6:01Speaker 2: you have to hit it three times before the soap
- 6:03Speaker 2: comes out.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yeah. And and in the men's it's always out of
- 6:06Speaker 4: soap all yeah, Like you'll go in there and oh soap,
- 6:10Speaker 4: and then the next day and then the next day
- 6:12Speaker 4: and the next day and snow soap.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm just that makes me happy. It means they're using
- 6:16Speaker 2: the soap it's available.
- 6:19Speaker 4: It was always fold Now I guess, well, I guess
- 6:22Speaker 4: I just have to rinse because there's no soap.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Somebody says, bring back the urinal trough. I think that
- 6:29Speaker 2: would mean more splashing, wouldn't it.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 6:33Speaker 4: I kind of liked the trough and I also like
- 6:35Speaker 4: the floor length urinal yeah, you know that, but that's
- 6:39Speaker 4: that really there is a lot of splashing with that.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I was gonna say that seems like it's excessively splashing Costco.
- 6:45Speaker 3: They have the floor length urinal.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I wish we could just take a pill that during
- 6:51Speaker 2: the day and then you just pee at home.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Well you know what I mean, like, well, you take a.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Pill that just sort of holds, it absorbs everything, and
- 7:03Speaker 2: then when you go home later you can take care.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Of all your business.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I guess you don't ever have to go christ room.
- 7:09Speaker 1: What does it know in your home that just wears off?
- 7:12Speaker 2: Oh, you maybe take another pill that Conyeah, Or.
- 7:18Speaker 3: If we could just install some sort of a faucet.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Why isn't somebody invent that? Who's working on that?
- 7:24Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 7:25Speaker 4: There's probably somebody at Weaver Steake' it's known as the
- 7:30Speaker 4: p university.
- 7:32Speaker 3: That what what if they won the Nobel Prize for that?
- 7:35Speaker 3: I don't I don't think there's a I don't think
- 7:37Speaker 3: there's a category.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's engineering, it's a I could I could find
- 7:42Speaker 2: a category where it was sure all right,
