- 0:01Welcome to Real Money with Lisa Chastain.
- 0:05Lisa Chastain is a best selling author and money coach known for
- 0:08her work in money mindset and financial transformation.
- 0:12Her approach focuses on the truth that money is emotional
- 0:15before it's mathematical, and that lasting financial freedom
- 0:18begins with changing the way we think, feel, and behave with
- 0:22money. On this show, Lisa explores the
- 0:25psychology of wealth, abundance mindset, financial literacy, and
- 0:29the deeper beliefs that shape everything from debt and income
- 0:32to entrepreneurship, side hustles, and building multiple
- 0:35income streams. If you're ready to shift your
- 0:37relationship with money and step into a stronger wealth mindset,
- 0:41you're in the right place. Here's your host, Lisa Chastain.
- 0:44Welcome to Real Money with Lisa Chastain.
- 0:52Welcome back to Real Money with Lisa Chastain.
- 0:54I'm so grateful you're here. And today we have a solo
- 0:56episode. So you've got me to yourself.
- 0:58Whether you're driving, whether you're in the kitchen, whether
- 1:01you're with your family or watching a sporting event where
- 1:04your kids are playing soccer right now and you're listening
- 1:06to this, whatever the case is, I'm so glad that you're here.
- 1:08We're going to dive in. I had the privilege of spending
- 1:11an evening last night specifically before I was
- 1:14planning on filming this with a group of really high level women
- 1:18in Las Vegas, Business owners, entrepreneurs, incredible CEOs,
- 1:23and shout out to the Monarch Club for hosting me last night.
- 1:26And we had a really powerful conversation about how financial
- 1:29landscape is changing for women. It's not new information and I'm
- 1:33not going to bore you with all of the details because if you're
- 1:35here, you're interested in finance, you're interested in
- 1:37women and money. And these statistics are all
- 1:40over the place right now. There's no secret that women are
- 1:43taking on more financial control.
- 1:46But the question here at Real Money is really what are you
- 1:48doing about it? Are you positioned to be in more
- 1:51control and in more ownership of money or is money in the next
- 1:56decade or the next century going to transfer like it always has?
- 2:00The haves have, the have, the haves have it and the have nots
- 2:04don't. And if we're not careful in this
- 2:06trillion dollar shift, that gap will continue to grow.
- 2:09So here's a conversation today on real money about women,
- 2:13power, control money, of course. And if you're a guy listening to
- 2:17this podcast, that's applies to you too, because I know that the
- 2:20world is changing for you just as much as it is for women.
- 2:24Right now, I'm the financial contributor for Standards
- 2:31Magazine. It's a new magazine, and I'm
- 2:34privileged and honored to be the financial contributor.
- 2:36Recently, I just wrote an article about the Sofia Century,
- 2:40the time they're in right now, where dynamics are changing for
- 2:43women, and I wrote an article about the $100 trillion shift.
- 2:46You want to read the article? The link is in the show notes.
- 2:48This isn't me reverberating that article, but I want to go
- 2:51through with you some some of the framework that I shared with
- 2:53the Monarch Club last night. And I also want to talk about
- 2:56what you can do specifically whether you're driving to work,
- 3:00you're driving home from work, you're in your work day, you're
- 3:03just taking a break. However, you're spending your
- 3:05time with me. I'm so grateful that you're
- 3:07here. Let's dig in.
- 3:09I want to start with this article, and here's just reading
- 3:12a clip from the article. What I what I started with.
- 3:14Women have had the spending power for decades.
- 3:17We know that 85% of the world's wealth is spent by women.
- 3:20That's not changing, by the way. That's just staying the same.
- 3:22If not, it's going to go up. We decide what gets bought, what
- 3:26trends, and what scales. Entire industries have been
- 3:29built around our preferences. The economy has long understood
- 3:34our influence as consumers. But influence and spending power
- 3:38is not the same thing. Control.
- 3:39Ownership is control. True ownership is control.
- 3:43Right now, an estimated $84 trillion is transferring in the
- 3:46United States alone over the next two decades.
- 3:50I'm 46, so by the time I'm 66 years old, $84 trillion will
- 3:54have transferred our way in assets and in wealth.
- 3:58This is nearly three times the annual gross US gross domestic
- 4:02product, three times. Globally, the number exceeds
- 4:05$100 trillion. So the majority is going to come
- 4:09to women in America. It's transferring and exceeds
- 4:12over 100 trillion globally. This is the largest
- 4:15intergenerational transfer of private wealth in modern hit
- 4:18history. And it's not coming someday.
- 4:20It's happening right now. Warren Buffett's 95 years old.
- 4:24He's one of the wealthiest men on the planet, and he will be no
- 4:27longer with us. His wealth will transfer in some
- 4:29way, shape or form, and so will other men and other empires.
- 4:33Financially, it's going to be transferring in our lifetime.
- 4:35Why is that important? Why does that matter for you?
- 4:37Well, if women are 85% of the 85% of the world's spenders, a
- 4:42lot of the wealth, the biggest distinction here in this in this
- 4:46wealth generational transfer is that the majority of that money
- 4:49is going to come to women. We are going to be the ones that
- 4:52inherit this money either through divorce, becoming
- 4:55widows, business transfer of ownership, or because
- 4:59statistically right now women are opening businesses and
- 5:02leaving corporate America at a larger scale than we've ever
- 5:05seen before. So if we look at we have more
- 5:08women in politics, we have more women in business, more women
- 5:11running Fortune 500 companies, more women owning companies than
- 5:16ever before, starting companies than ever before, more women
- 5:19leading corporate America, and we have more female leaders than
- 5:23ever before on the planet. Big news for women.
- 5:26It's very awesome. And at the same time, the
- 5:29question is going back to Are you ready for it?
- 5:32Is that generationally money patterns transfer.
- 5:36So we have this massive shift happening for women and money,
- 5:41and our nervous systems are not yet wired to receive it and hold
- 5:46it. Why?
- 5:47Because 85% of the world's wealth has been spent by women,
- 5:51but only until the last decade have 30% of the world's 30% of
- 5:55the world's wealth been controlled or owned by women.
- 5:59So there's a huge gap and a huge learning curve that we are not.
- 6:02It's not just coming our way anymore.
- 6:04We're here and we're feeling it. And today's episode is all about
- 6:08what do we do about it? How do we handle it?
- 6:10How do we shift it? How do we heal it so that we can
- 6:13have a healthy transition into this time, so that for centuries
- 6:17to come, women don't just spend the money, but women prevail.
- 6:21Women's rights prevail, and it all comes down to money.
- 6:24I truly, truly believe this. So here's my belief.
- 6:28You don't have a money problem as a listener of real money.
- 6:31We don't have money problems. We're smart.
- 6:32We're smart women. We are the most educated women
- 6:36on the planet today. We have more pH, DS, more
- 6:39master's degrees, more advanced degrees, more bachelor's
- 6:42degrees, and more associate's degrees than men today.
- 6:45This is current time. Millennial women are the most
- 6:48educated women on the planet today.
- 6:49So we've done the work to educate ourselves, which is
- 6:52insane and beautiful and amazing right now, in addition to
- 6:56educating ourselves. Because what we've realized that
- 6:58education just isn't enough, especially in the work of money,
- 7:02mindset and financial transformation.
- 7:04It's our capacity now and needs to come online with it, with the
- 7:09education, with the knowledge that we have.
- 7:12We need to bring our nervous systems and our bodies together
- 7:15to be able to make this transition successfully and to
- 7:19hold on to the wealth, hold on to the power, hold on to the
- 7:23control. Because 90% of the money that
- 7:26women, that comes women's way, 90% of that money gets
- 7:29reinvested into our communities, into the environment, into our
- 7:33households, into making the planet a better place.
- 7:36So there's nothing bad that could happen when more women
- 7:40have more money, unless it is the unhealed masculine version
- 7:45of ourselves that inherits this money on the mainstage.
- 7:49I have a couple of videos that I've just posted, one out about
- 7:51Jeffrey Epstein, and we're seeing this all over the United
- 7:55States right now. We have toxic masculine energy
- 7:59driving the bus. And when I say masculine, I
- 8:02don't just mean men. Toxic masculine energy is
- 8:07driving the bus for us and it's killing us all.
- 8:10We cannot afford for that to be our future financially.
- 8:14The feminine in all of us needs to come online.
- 8:17The divine feminine in all of us, the healer in all of us
- 8:21needs to come together and come online.
- 8:24But first we have to embrace it and notice that that's actually
- 8:26something that's necessary. It's something that we need to
- 8:29do. It's something that we need at
- 8:31all. In business specifically.
- 8:33I've been in business for over a decade.
- 8:35Before that, I was in higher education.
- 8:37The male dominated systems are killing us.
- 8:41We have more suicide rates in men than ever before.
- 8:43OK, I'm giving you data and things that you already know.
- 8:46But to drive the point home, why does that happen?
- 8:49Well, it happens because our nervous systems are not yet
- 8:53healed and able to hold all the goodness and all the money and
- 8:57all the wealth that's coming our way.
- 8:59We see this cycle. There's a, there's lots of
- 9:01podcast episodes in Real Money where I've talked a lot about
- 9:04people getting wealth and then losing wealth and then getting
- 9:06wealth and then losing wealth. How does that happen?
- 9:08Well, their nervous systems and their internal operations system
- 9:12was rooted in scarcity and fear and survival.
- 9:16And if we maintain that context and framework financially, I
- 9:19don't know if we're going to make it to the next century at
- 9:21all. A lot of us are questioning
- 9:23that. A lot of us are doubting that.
- 9:25And so when it comes to money specifically, as much as
- 9:28budgeting has talked about the work for us to do is to increase
- 9:32our capacity financially, what does that mean?
- 9:35Think about the last financial decision you delayed or second
- 9:39guessed yourself or told yourself before you got the
- 9:42raise that you're not even worthy of a raise.
- 9:44Think about the last time you made a financial decision that
- 9:47was rooted in fear or scarcity. That's capacity.
- 9:51That's not a numbers problem. That's not a discipline problem.
- 9:55There's an internal conversation.
- 9:57Internal driver for you that's having you choose from a place
- 10:01of scarcity and fear, that's the piece that needs to be healed.
- 10:05So when we talk about capacity, we talk about through our
- 10:07somatic nervous system, what is it that needs to be healed and
- 10:11shifted financially and beyond so that you can become the woman
- 10:15or the man that you were born to be from a healed place.
- 10:19When we learn how to titrate our capacity, maybe today you don't
- 10:24even know what you would do with $3000, let alone 3,000,000.
- 10:28That's capacity to $3000 versus $3,000,000 is going to do
- 10:32something different to your nervous system.
- 10:34That's the internal work that we need to do to raise our capacity
- 10:38financially. I asked a business owner last
- 10:40week. He's making less than 100, $1000
- 10:42a year, and he's got all these dreams and this big vision for
- 10:45himself financially. And he said his goal this year
- 10:47is to make $100,000 a year. Well, if that's the case, what
- 10:51would happen to your nervous system?
- 10:53This is a question I asked him. What would happen to his nervous
- 10:56system? And would he know what to do
- 10:58with $250,000 a year? He closed his eyes and he took a
- 11:02breath. And he goes, Oh my God, I have
- 11:04no idea. That's capacity, 100,000
- 11:07dollars, $250,000. If you're a business owner and
- 11:10you have big dreams and you don't know what you would do
- 11:12with the next level of wealth in your life, we've got to figure
- 11:16that out. That has nothing to do with
- 11:17budgeting. That has everything to do with
- 11:19increasing your capacity. So when it comes to this $100
- 11:22trillion that's shifting right now intergenerationally, it's
- 11:25like, OK, we got to look at what actually has to happen so that
- 11:28you can receive more, that you can have more and that you have
- 11:32the capacity to earn and have unlimited earning potential.
- 11:36OK. And then comes in your financial
- 11:38set point. Your financial set point goes
- 11:40back to the aid before the age of seven.
- 11:42I talk a lot about this in my book Stop Budgeting, Start
- 11:44living, and I'm going to, we're going to talk specifically about
- 11:47where for you to look about your financial set point right after
- 11:50the break pause. If you're successful on paper,
- 11:54but still don't feel as powerful as you know you can be with
- 11:57money, the wealth within is where we change all of that.
- 12:00Link is in the show notes. OK, we're back.
- 12:03So in neuro linguistic programming, we have a saying.
- 12:05It says that we don't see the world as it is, we see the world
- 12:10as we are. We also have a conversation.
- 12:12You may not have heard this before, but in neuro linguistic
- 12:14program, when we talk about it all the time is that the map is
- 12:17not the territory and the map is our internal reality versus the
- 12:21territory which is the rest of the world.
- 12:23When we can acknowledge the fact that our map of reality is not
- 12:27as it is, then we can go, well, what does that mean?
- 12:31How does that apply to ourselves financially?
- 12:33Well, our financial set point goes back to our financial
- 12:37imprinting, which is before the age of seven.
- 12:39I want you to think of it this way.
- 12:41Everybody has a different financial set point, akaa
- 12:43different map of reality for different reasons.
- 12:46We process information this differently.
- 12:48We have different skill sets, we have different strengths.
- 12:52And our financial set point dating back to the before the
- 12:54age of 7 is almost like each of us was born on a different a
- 12:58different level of a hotel. It has different floors, right?
- 13:01Well, some of you were born in the placement of the hotel or on
- 13:04the street outside of the hotel. You didn't even get into the
- 13:06hotel in the 1st place. If you're in India, we talk
- 13:09about caste systems and we know that there's some unconscious
- 13:13ways that people think about money based on how they were
- 13:16raised. Well, if we, it's pretty easy to
- 13:17simplify that and think about a hotel.
- 13:19Everybody's born on a different floor financially.
- 13:22And if you're someone who was born in the penthouse
- 13:24financially, you have a different map of reality than
- 13:27someone who was born in the basement.
- 13:29Also, how does this financial set point apply to real time
- 13:33getting to where you want to go? Let's say that you're someone
- 13:36who was born in the in the basement financially and your
- 13:39financial set point is in fear and scarcity and not having a
- 13:43lot in a working class environment.
- 13:45Maybe money was toxic like Ground Zero.
- 13:48Things were not healthy and people were just fighting to
- 13:51feed themselves. If we listen to our parents or
- 13:53our grandparents talk about the find, about the depression
- 13:56families of ate, if you didn't get to the table and eat, you
- 14:00didn't eat at all. That will be my version of like
- 14:02the hotel basement. Having studied economics in
- 14:04college and been a part of the financial conversation for years
- 14:07and years and years. Another comparison would be
- 14:10someone in a third world country having access to fewer
- 14:14resources, less education, all the things right, You get it.
- 14:17OK, now go up a layer, go up a level.
- 14:20Go up a level. Middle class is in the middle of
- 14:22the hotel. And then of course we have the
- 14:24penthouse, the very top of the hotel.
- 14:26Well, if you have a financial set point in a lower level and
- 14:29you want to make it to the penthouse, you're going to have
- 14:32to do a lot more work because you got a lot more levels.
- 14:34I'm a 90s kids Super Mario Brothers.
- 14:36Hello, we know what it like what it's like to get to different
- 14:39levels. If you're you got to check in
- 14:41and think about what is your financial set point?
- 14:43Because for me, the whole reason I started the Real Money
- 14:46podcast, which has changed over the years, It's got like, my
- 14:49God, what is it really going to take for someone who doesn't
- 14:52have a penthouse financial set point to get there?
- 14:57What do we actually have to do to get there?
- 14:59And there's so many financial experts that were born on floor
- 15:0225 telling people on floor 1 what to do.
- 15:06And their map of reality is totally different from others.
- 15:11That's the whole point of financial set point.
- 15:13And we have to realize and recognize that in order to say
- 15:17what do we do about it? Because for those of us who were
- 15:20born with lower financial set points, blue collar girl, my dad
- 15:24never made more than $60,000 a year.
- 15:27I have more work to do because of my internal representation of
- 15:32what money is and what money isn't.
- 15:35It doesn't live in me. Fluence doesn't live in me.
- 15:40It's something that I aspire for and in order for me to get
- 15:44there, I have other levels to go, not just in knowledge.
- 15:50I was a financial advisor. I had my Series 65 and I spent a
- 15:55long time trying to get that Series 65.
- 15:57I failed it three times because of the knowledge base that I
- 16:00needed that I didn't have. It wasn't born in me.
- 16:03It wasn't around me. Growing up, I felt like I was
- 16:06learning a different language because of it.
- 16:08So I had a different financial set point to get into new rooms.
- 16:12I had to raise my, raise my thermometer, raise my knowledge
- 16:16base, and I've had to do the internal work to shift the
- 16:20beliefs about myself, beliefs about money.
- 16:23I had to work on my somatic system to build my nervous
- 16:26system capacity. I had a vision 10 years ago that
- 16:30I would be this woman, this woman today.
- 16:33It's taken me 10 years to get here.
- 16:35Everybody has work to do financially.
- 16:37And the penthouse, Oh my God, aren't we seeing on a global
- 16:39scale people at the penthouse level and the work that they
- 16:43need to do too? So this is not about more money
- 16:48all the time. It's about more capacity,
- 16:51looking at your financial set point and doing the work that
- 16:54you need to do so that you can live the life that you want to
- 16:58live. And here's the third thing,
- 17:00identity. We're going to talk about
- 17:02identity because if you don't change your your identity of
- 17:06yourself, your financial life may never change.
- 17:09And I believe that this is the biggest thing that financial
- 17:12experts miss and why we talk about it here on Real Money.
- 17:16So right after the break, we're going to talk about identity and
- 17:18what you need to know in order to level up your life
- 17:21financially now and forever. I'll be right back.
- 17:24Hey, if you're here to change your life with money, you've got
- 17:27to know that change happens one minute at a time.
- 17:30Let me be your daily reminder of where to focus so that you can
- 17:34have everything that it is that you want.
- 17:35One minute Money Mindset link is in the show notes.
- 17:38All right, we're back. But first, I have a question.
- 17:41What does wealth mean to you? Not what you think it should
- 17:43mean, not what it means to your parents, not what it means to
- 17:47society, but what does it mean to you specifically and uniquely
- 17:52you? If you don't know that question,
- 17:54that is the very first place for us to start.
- 17:57Because remember, in the last portion of this episode, we
- 18:00talked about setpoint. And you might be spending a lot
- 18:02of time trying to get out of a financial setpoint that you were
- 18:05born into, not even realizing that you're recreating the same
- 18:07patterns over and over and over again in terms of identity.
- 18:12If you want to sustainably transform your life, truly
- 18:16transform your life, be at a different level of that hotel,
- 18:19whatever that looks like for you.
- 18:21Maybe for you, it just means more peace.
- 18:24Maybe it doesn't mean more money.
- 18:25But if you want to transform your life, you have to clearly
- 18:28define what wealth means for you in the 1st place.
- 18:31And you've probably heard me talk about this before, but I
- 18:34have a great event. It's called The Wealth Within
- 18:35where we do this identity level work.
- 18:38The next event's April 30th, we have another one in September
- 18:41and we'll have a whole roll out in 2027.
- 18:44But it's the identity work of you going, wow, I was born into
- 18:48a floor one family, whatever that means for you contextually.
- 18:52And my financial identity was rooted in fear and scarcity.
- 18:56I've had these conversations with clients over and over and
- 18:59over again, immigrant kids, immigrant families that started
- 19:02with nothing. Very few make it to the
- 19:05penthouse floor. Why is that?
- 19:08Because if you still have a 5 year old identity running around
- 19:11inside, that's your representation, internal
- 19:14representation of money. You may never get to the next
- 19:17level because you have an internal representation of what
- 19:20that means too. And maybe you don't want that
- 19:23either. I'll give you an example.
- 19:24For me, I grew up in a family where there were lots of
- 19:27conversations about wealthy people.
- 19:29We weren't one of them. There were lots of conversations
- 19:32about wealth was and what wealth wasn't, and we weren't one of
- 19:35them, one of the wealthy people. There were lots of unhealthy
- 19:38conversations about wealthy people.
- 19:41I guess the question is for you, what is the limiting belief or
- 19:45what is the internal representation that you have
- 19:47about wealth? And if you want something
- 19:49different in your financial life today, that's the first place to
- 19:52start. How do you do that?
- 19:54Visualization, breath work, guided exercises, dreaming,
- 19:59there are lots of ways with guided support for you to create
- 20:01a new vision for yourself when it comes to wealth.
- 20:03But that's the first place. If you don't have a vision for
- 20:05your life, you got it. You got to start there.
- 20:08But I want to end this conversation today with this.
- 20:10Wealth, first of all, is not a number.
- 20:12Wealth is a way of being. Wealth is a lifestyle.
- 20:14We're talking about that in Standards Magazine.
- 20:16You can join the conversation with me there.
- 20:18Link is in the bio. And also, in order for you to
- 20:20create the kind of wealth that you want, you may need to change
- 20:24your identity. What do I mean by that?
- 20:26Let's start with the analogy of a Caterpillar.
- 20:29Pillars don't just change their behavior to become a butterfly
- 20:33KA budgeting. Budgeting would be a behavioral
- 20:36change or behavioral shift financially in order to get what
- 20:39you want. Well, a Caterpillar to get to a
- 20:41butterfly can't simply just change its behavior to become a
- 20:44butterfly. It can't just do wraps and work
- 20:47out to try to fly. It can't just jump off of off of
- 20:50a twig to try to become a butterfly and poof magic
- 20:54butterfly wings appear. It doesn't happen that way and
- 20:56it's the same thing financially, just changing your behaviors
- 20:59financially, if you still identify as a broke person isn't
- 21:03going to work overtime. Eventually you revert back to
- 21:06the broke identity or you'll be broke because that is your
- 21:10identity as a broke little kid from Brooklyn or from wherever
- 21:13you are. Caterpillars don't just also
- 21:15change their environment to become butterflies.
- 21:17What do I mean by that? Well, they don't just go out and
- 21:19get a new job to become a butterfly.
- 21:22And in finance, a lot of times the advice that we're given is
- 21:25to change our behaviors and change our environment in order
- 21:28to get a new identity financially.
- 21:31It's not going to happen that way.
- 21:32The third tier, this is from neurolinguistic programming too,
- 21:35which is NLP logical levels. The third tier is capabilities.
- 21:40So a Caterpillar doesn't just go back to school to learn how to
- 21:45become the butterfly. There is no butterfly school.
- 21:47A Caterpillar doesn't enroll and get a PhD in becoming a
- 21:51butterfly in order to become a butterfly.
- 21:53You see where I'm going with this, right?
- 21:55So according to logical levels of neuro linguistic programming,
- 21:58in order to get the transformation that you truly
- 22:01want in your life, which is exactly why I'm bringing this
- 22:04home financially, because my whole world is about
- 22:06transforming people's lives financially and your life
- 22:09financially is that transformation.
- 22:12Sustainable? Transformation happens next at
- 22:15the vision and values level, identity level and purpose
- 22:19level. In order for you to change your
- 22:22life financially, to step into the wealthy, whole healed human
- 22:27that you were born to be financially, you must level up
- 22:31and focus on your identity. How do you do that?
- 22:34It's a process. It's a process and it starts
- 22:37with understanding what your vision and mission is for this
- 22:40life, which is deep, deep work. It's not as simple as budgeting
- 22:44to be wealthy has to be clearly defined.
- 22:47And also you've got to do the inner work to heal parts of you
- 22:50that might be pulling you back and pulling you down to those
- 22:53lower levels that you don't want to play at anymore.
- 22:56So you've got to be in more productive conversations and
- 22:59doing identity level work is one of the most productive things
- 23:03that you can do to change your identity financially so that you
- 23:06can become a butterfly and fly. OK, What does all of this have
- 23:10to do with what we started with the Sofia century?
- 23:13Women must change our identities to lead into this century.
- 23:17We've got to stop playing the smaller game.
- 23:19We have to disallow being controlled.
- 23:21We have to control more. And I truly believe that
- 23:25financially is where it's all going to shift.
- 23:29When more women have more money, when we expand our capacities,
- 23:33when we change our identities as it relates to money, we do the
- 23:38inner work, the inner child work and the ultimate healing that
- 23:40needs to be done. The world will change because
- 23:44the woman is the center of the universe.
- 23:47I believe that. Do you.
- 23:48All right, that is the end of today's episode.
