- 1:37Mike Marrs: So a hi-ho.
- 1:38Mike Marrs: What is a hi-ho?
- 1:39Mike Marrs: It's a real tall backhoe.
- 1:41Mike Marrs: Okay, you should have said a real tall backhoe.
- 1:43Don Armstrong: Oh, so you know, but but you know, you don't have to you have to give him a little yeah, you have to give him a little break because he is from Neeterville, and that's in the area.
- 1:52Jeff Dziekan: Oh, hi-ho.
- 1:52Jeff Dziekan: See, who's our guest?
- 1:55Jeff Dziekan: Well, that's another story.
- 1:56Don Armstrong: All right, uh, time now for our guest in the studio.
- 1:59Don Armstrong: We have an actual participant in today's cruise in.
- 2:02Don Armstrong: Mr.
- 2:02Don Armstrong: Mars, would you introduce our guest?
- 2:04Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 2:04Mike Marrs: This is Charlie Domain.
- 2:06Mike Marrs: He is the proud owner of this white 1968 Chevelle SS drop top convertible, no less.
- 2:15Mike Marrs: That uh beautiful car setting over here, and he's going to share with us what he knows about his car.
- 2:22Mike Marrs: And what's his name again?
- 2:23Mike Marrs: Charlie Domain.
- 2:24Mike Marrs: Charlie.
- 2:25Mike Marrs: Domain.
- 2:25Mike Marrs: Yep.
- 2:26Mike Marrs: Really?
- 2:26Mike Marrs: Not to be confused with Buddy Domain down in Groves, that's a drag racer, but this is Charlie.
- 2:31Don Armstrong: Charlie, you got a really cool car.
- 2:33Don Armstrong: I don't know anything about you, but you got good taste in cars.
- 2:36Mike Marrs: Thank you, sir.
- 2:37Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 2:38Mike Marrs: Pull this up a little tighter there.
- 2:39Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 2:40Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 2:40Don Armstrong: Perfect.
- 2:41Don Armstrong: Uh 68 Chevelle S is it you got the original motor in it?
- 2:44Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 2:45Don Armstrong: It's a number matching car.
- 2:46Don Armstrong: It's a 396 numbers matching car.
- 2:49Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 2:49Don Armstrong: Well, it's beautiful.
- 2:50Don Armstrong: Thank you.
- 2:51Don Armstrong: White, white.
- 2:52Don Armstrong: With a black interior.
- 2:54Don Armstrong: Black interior.
- 2:55Don Armstrong: Bench seat.
- 2:56Don Armstrong: And yes, and you're going to talk about that.
- 2:58Don Armstrong: And the top is white or black?
- 2:59Don Armstrong: Black.
- 3:00Don Armstrong: Black.
- 3:00Don Armstrong: Good for you.
- 3:01Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 3:01Don Armstrong: You're the man.
- 3:02Don Armstrong: You keep it in the garage?
- 3:04Don Armstrong: Yes, you do.
- 3:05Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 3:05Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 3:06Don Armstrong: Under a cover.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Under a cover.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Do you do you drive it very much?
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I usually go to car shows on the weekend.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Like this one.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: And special events.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh something for the kids.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Uh go to Calderwoods, you know, for the senior people, and we have a little get together there once a year.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: What do you mean the senior people?
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: You mean what do you think we look like?
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: High school seniors.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: High school seniors.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Still wear mini skirts.
- 3:34Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 3:35Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:36Mike Marrs: Exactly.
- 3:36Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:36Don Armstrong: They don't even make those anymore.
- 3:38Don Armstrong: I don't know.
- 3:38Jeff Dziekan: They still wear them.
- 3:39Jeff Dziekan: What are you talking about?
- 3:40Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:42Don Armstrong: Well, never mind.
- 3:43Don Armstrong: Um, Charlie.
- 3:45Don Armstrong: I I I I know you told us the story earlier off the air.
- 3:48Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:49Don Armstrong: So I want to let share everybody, share with everybody the story of this car.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: I had another old car in uh Hurricane Harvey.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Wanted it more than I did.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Uh-oh.
- 4:00Don Armstrong: Oh, Hurricane Harvey.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: So it they they took it, and then my car buddy enthusiast told me, Let's just go to Meekham.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: I said, Well, I said, I really don't need to go to Meekham.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: I got a house to put together and a lot of damage.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: They said, Well, you need to take your mind off of it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Go to Meekham.
- 4:17Jeff Dziekan: And bring your checkbook.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Are you married, Charlie?
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Been married 54 years.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Good for you.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I know y'all was talking about that a while ago, but it it don't change.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Well, that's good to know.
- 4:32Don Armstrong: We need to have uh knowing that.
- 4:34Don Armstrong: Confirmation that we've got to look forward to.
- 4:37Don Armstrong: So anyway, continue on.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: We went to Meekham and I I targeted the car well I looked on online first and I picked out the car I wanted.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: And uh collision specialist David Fetter went with me and he picks out cars, he buys cars from Meekham a lot.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: But anyway, we targeted.
- 4:55Don Armstrong: Is he buying for other people or buying it?
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: No, buys them for himself.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: He's got his own car collection going on.
- 4:59Don Armstrong: All right.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: So we targeted that car and it came up during the lunchtime.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: It's a no reserve.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: No reserve.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: No reserve.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: And we bid on it, and I actually wanted it$42,000.
- 5:11Don Armstrong: You got that car for$42,000.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Well, you but you got to pay them 10% in an auction fee.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I understand.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: So then when I was signing the papers over, I started smiling, and the lady says, What's so funny?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: I said, Well, this is the exact check I just got paid for my other classic car that flooded.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: So I really got a nicer car, you know.
- 5:30Don Armstrong: So that worked out well.
- 5:33Don Armstrong: It just moved around now.
- 5:34Don Armstrong: Um I asked you, I said, so is it a frame off restoration?
- 5:38Don Armstrong: Because that paint job on that car is really nice.
- 5:41Don Armstrong: You don't know.
- 5:42Don Armstrong: I don't know that, no, sir.
- 5:44Don Armstrong: And and it also has a special sticker on it that I believe one of our my two partners here noticed that if it is one of those cars, we have no way of I've that's been asked about many times.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: It's got a Baldwin sticker on the rear on the tail panel, like they sold it, and it's got a Baldwin tune sticker on the valve cover.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Wasn't Baldwin Chevrolet, weren't they in Pennsylvania?
- 6:09Mike Marrs: I thought they were in Detroit.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: No.
- 6:11Mike Marrs: I was I was thinking East Coast, isn't it?
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: New York New York, yeah.
- 6:14Mike Marrs: New York, yeah.
- 6:15Mike Marrs: They were in New York.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I could tell by the accent it was something up there.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: And they was probably the forerunner of the Copo Camaros and stuff.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Uh Yanko makes them, you know, they they were just a dealership that did their own thing.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: You know, put the bigger motor in it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Uh so yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: But I I have no way of proving it or disproving it.
- 6:36Don Armstrong: Right.
- 6:36Don Armstrong: But it was a numbers matching car.
- 6:38Don Armstrong: It is a numbers matching car.
- 6:39Don Armstrong: Chances are that there's maybe some truth behind all of that.
- 6:42Don Armstrong: Is it necessary?
- 6:43Don Armstrong: Is it called a four-speed?
- 6:44Don Armstrong: No, sir, it's automatic.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: It's an automatic, three-speed on the column.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Three-speed on the column.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: That was individual.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: It's got optic lighting on it, which was a tornado feature.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: So that car's got it also.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: So that's why I'm thinking a dealership probably put that car together for somebody special ordered.
- 7:03Don Armstrong: And uh you also mentioned the fact that uh it had uh bench seat in it.
- 7:08Don Armstrong: Tell the story about the bench seat.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, we if you look at the little number plate, uh bench seats, you break all the numbers down, and it it shows you the paperwork, and there's an asterisk at the bottom.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: It says Chevrolet did not offer a bench seat in '68, so they went across the street to the Buick plant and got a Buick seat and installed it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Buick offered a bench seat in the Skylark.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna say that, uh that's a Skylark body.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, basically, yes.
- 7:35Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: They called them all A-bodies back then.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: General Motors called them all A bodies.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: A lot of the parts interchange.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: How does it look like underneath that car?
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Spotless, spotless.
- 7:48Don Armstrong: Do you know how many miles it's got on it?
- 7:51Don Armstrong: What does the odometer say?
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Right now, the odometer said like 863.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: So it just turned over 100,000 miles in December of last year.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: So I don't know whether that's original, if it's 200,000, or you know, I mean, there's 60 years.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Well, it's so well taken care of.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Did has it ever been wrecked or bumped or not?
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Not that I can tell.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: No, sir.
- 8:12Don Armstrong: Can't see anything.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: I've had body men look at it and they they finger the cracks and stuff and tell you all the door edges are just right.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, the putting it together, all the lines.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 8:24Mike Marrs: You baby that's it sure is pretty.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: I love about black and white car.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: I wash it and clean it and cover it up.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Look at it, kiss it, kiss it, start it, rub on it.
- 8:35Don Armstrong: Uh, four four-barrel carburetor on that 396.
- 8:39Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 8:39Don Armstrong: Does it have cowl induction?
- 8:41Don Armstrong: No, sir.
- 8:41Don Armstrong: They didn't offer cowl induction 68.
- 8:43Don Armstrong: 69 is when they offered cowl induction.
- 8:45Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 8:46Don Armstrong: Because somebody along the line, that would have been a big temptation to put a 69 hood on it because I think it would interchange.
- 8:54Don Armstrong: Yes, right.
- 8:55Don Armstrong: Whereas the front end, the grill and the fenders, they don't interchange.
- 9:00Don Armstrong: Because the way that the headlights and the bezels around the headlight go back into the wheel wave.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's the first year of the dual headlights.
- 9:07Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 9:08Don Armstrong: It's a beautiful car.
- 9:09Don Armstrong: Well, thank you.
- 9:10Don Armstrong: Yeah, really.
- 9:10Don Armstrong: I know you're proud of it.
- 9:11Don Armstrong: And you probably have idiots like me that want to know all about it and ask the same questions that I asked.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Well, that's the that's the purpose of coming to the car show.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: You share that information.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: And they what you share what you know, and they share what they know, and it it all is a Chevelle Club?
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: No, sir.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: You know, we don't have a Chevelle club in this area that I know of.
- 9:30Jeff Dziekan: Or any club?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: No, sir, no club, no.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: No, we have a lot of clubs, but uh I just go independently.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Retired, I don't have time for what did you do when you were working?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: I worked for Exxon Mobil.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Mobil to start off with, and Exxon purchased it in 2000.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: And I retired from in 2007.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: You're a refinery.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: How long did you work there?
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I went back for 10 years as a consultant, so I got all together at 37.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Then I worked back, so I had 47 years total.
- 10:07Mike Marrs: You you can quit now if you'd like.
- 10:09Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, I have.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: My age, age caught up with me.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Did it?
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: But you are you enjoying your retirement?
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I enjoy it.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: I do something to do all the time.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: People call me.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: My wife will say, Well, what are you gonna do today?
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Well, whoever calls first.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Whoever calls needs something.
- 10:25Don Armstrong: Hey Charlie, I need you to come over here and put this new manifold on this car.
- 10:28Don Armstrong: Will you help me?
- 10:29Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Is that the kind of thing?
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Or go to the beach and turn the water on or turn the water off or just you got a beach house?
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: No, sir, I don't, but I have friends that have beach houses.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: You don't need to buy a beach house because you know everybody else that's got it.
- 10:40Mike Marrs: It's kind of like having a beach house, it's like having a boat.
- 10:43Mike Marrs: You always want it, you have a friend that's got that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Here comes an old mobile retiree right here.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: And what did he drive today?
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Did he just come down here to have?
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: What did you drive, Randy?
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: What do you have today?
- 10:54unknown: What's up?
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: What'd you drive today?
- 10:57unknown: A Durango.
- 10:58Mike Marrs: A Durango.
- 10:59Mike Marrs: A Durango.
- 11:00unknown: Going to Stingery restaurant.
- 11:01Mike Marrs: Oh my god.
- 11:02Mike Marrs: Speaking of going to the beach, that's where he's headed.
- 11:05Mike Marrs: Stingery.
- 11:06Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:07Don Armstrong: Oh yeah.
- 11:08Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 11:08Don Armstrong: Well, that's why he drove the Durango.
- 11:10Don Armstrong: He doesn't want to mess up the good cars that he's got.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Do you have any uh good cars?
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: He's got numerous good cars.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Does he?
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: And he he helps people with built and mechanic work on them too.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: He's got a little restoration shop.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: But he didn't bring one.
- 11:22Mike Marrs: He's gonna go to the damn beach.
- 11:24Mike Marrs: He's going 78 miles to eat dinner.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Well, I think there might be a lady behind that.
- 11:30Jeff Dziekan: Probably.
- 11:31Jeff Dziekan: If he's if he's going to dinner, he better leave now because that traffic's well, you know, it's supposed to be a nice warm day.
- 11:36Don Armstrong: It is.
- 11:37Don Armstrong: I know in Houston it's supposed to be close to 90 degrees.
- 11:39Don Armstrong: I don't know about here, but it's probably something.
- 11:42Mike Marrs: It'd be a little cooler down there on the bay because the restaurant's right there on the bay.
- 11:45Mike Marrs: Ah, the old bay.
- 11:46Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 11:47Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 11:48Don Armstrong: Well, um, it it's uh it's interesting to talk to you because you know, uh, we talk to all sorts of different car people.
- 11:54Don Armstrong: Yeah, but uh there's something special about that particular age of automobile that we can all relate to.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:02Don Armstrong: We all wanted that car that you have.
- 12:05Don Armstrong: Now, when you were working down there at Exxon Mobil, what'd you drive?
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Well, started out as driving a Volkswagen when I hired on.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: And then I think I turned to a Toyota and maybe a Shivvy truck or a GMC truck.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Just I keep them 10, 12, 15 years.
- 12:24Don Armstrong: Yeah, I mean, did you have uh any hot rods back in that day?
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: No, sir.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: No, I had I had motorcycles, four-wheelers, and jet skis.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: And kids.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: A wife and kids.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: A wife and kids.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: I didn't get a classic car until after the family had left, and it was just something for me to do.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: So how long have you been into classic cars?
- 12:43Don Armstrong: Because obviously you had one in Harvey.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe what was 2019.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: What was it?
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: What was that car that got uh ruined by Harvey?
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: It was a Buick Skylark Grand Sport.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Well, hello.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: And then my buddies out there at the refinery.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Here's a car like you had in high school, and it was in San Antonio, and I went and bought it, and but it was a convertible.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: You and your convertibles.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Well, of course you got hair to cover up that head.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, I mean it don't get messed up too often.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: But I I also have a Volkswagen convertible.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: A little wheel.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the cars.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Well, that was the high school car.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Well, that's the car took took the motorcycle's place.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: The motorcycle flooded in Harvey, also.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Isn't there a song, Jesus Take My Buick?
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: You know what Jesus Take the Wheel, that's what it is.
- 13:36Don Armstrong: Oh, that's right.
- 13:37Don Armstrong: Take the Buick.
- 13:39Don Armstrong: Well, it's a real pleasure to talk to you.
- 13:41Don Armstrong: It's an honor to do that.
- 13:42Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:43Don Armstrong: And uh do you ever make it over to Houston?
- 13:46Don Armstrong: Just about once a month to go to a doctor.
- 13:48Mike Marrs: Really?
- 13:49Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Well, you need to make that doctor's appointment right around Easter because you know they got another tailpipes in tacos.
- 13:54Don Armstrong: Yes, that's how I heard you talk about that.
- 13:56Don Armstrong: And uh the interesting thing about it is is that we're far enough away, different cars here.
- 14:02Don Armstrong: Sure.
- 14:02Don Armstrong: We love different cars.
- 14:04Jeff Dziekan: Sure.
- 14:04Jeff Dziekan: You got any low riders coming in, the different stuff.
- 14:06Don Armstrong: And that's not to say that we don't love everybody that has cars, but you know, you get to see the same cars because we're not we are all creatures of habit.
- 14:15Don Armstrong: Sure.
- 14:16Don Armstrong: And so we know that you're gonna see a lot of the same cars, but you come over here, it's a whole different world.
- 14:22Don Armstrong: So we need to get some of these cars, we need to intermingle, we need to coalesce, we need to love one another and take a little road trip early on a Saturday morning in the dark over to Houston.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Well, we gotta we gotta worry about the price of gas.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: You know, maybe eight, nine miles to a gallon, you don't want to go very far.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 14:41Mike Marrs: Maybe we meet in the middle like an Annawak or someplace.
- 14:44Mike Marrs: Not I have no idea where that's at.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: You you go over there and you wait for everybody to show up and tell me how it worked for you.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: They have a car show in Annawak once a year to Gators, to Gator Fest.
- 14:54Mike Marrs: Yeah, that's true.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Well, Mars, I'll let you set that up.
- 14:57Mike Marrs: We tried to do that one time when Danny Coker was coming down.
- 15:01Mike Marrs: He was gonna him and his band were gonna be there.
- 15:03Mike Marrs: Danny Coker.
- 15:04Mike Marrs: And we thought, well, that'd be a good time for us to go, but we just is he is he in jail still?
- 15:09Don Armstrong: No, he was.
- 15:10Mike Marrs: I think he's in jail.
- 15:13Mike Marrs: I see his reruns, I couldn't.
- 15:14Don Armstrong: Well, I know because uh apparently he got sued by everybody and his mother.
- 15:17Jeff Dziekan: Oh, I don't know about all that.
- 15:18Jeff Dziekan: I'm sure he did.
- 15:19Jeff Dziekan: They all get sued.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: His painter's from Waco.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: He comes down to a car show, the Carvet Club puts on here in Beaumont in September.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:27Don Armstrong: Well, you know, there's another car show that I was uh telling Chase about.
- 15:32Don Armstrong: I can't remember the name of it, but it's up at College Station.
- 15:35Don Armstrong: And it happens in the early spring.
- 15:37Don Armstrong: I remember going up there with Michael Wooding when he had the uh Pontiac.
- 15:40Don Armstrong: And it's a big cruise in on a Saturday.
- 15:43Don Armstrong: Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 15:44Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 15:44Don Armstrong: I've heard of it.
- 15:45Don Armstrong: I can't think of the name of it either.
- 15:47Don Armstrong: But uh it it it's not in one parking lot, it's in about a dozen parking lots in one area of town, and you go from here to here to here in any colour.
- 15:54Mike Marrs: Almost like a woodward cruise type thing to take in that?
- 15:57Don Armstrong: You kind of no, it's not a Woodward type cruise, it's a parking lot cruise.
- 16:01Mike Marrs: Oh, okay.
- 16:01Don Armstrong: But we're gonna find out, we're gonna get involved in that with uh the loopy tortilla because apparently that loopy tortilla that is in uh college station, it has parking lot from here all the way to Cady, Texas.
- 16:14Don Armstrong: Wow so uh we're in.
- 16:16Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's it.
- 16:17Don Armstrong: So we could readdress all of that problem that they've got over there.
- 16:20Don Armstrong: Charlie, it's great to talk to you.
- 16:21Don Armstrong: Nice talk to you guys.

- 19:18Jeff Dziekan: So they're all out in Darlington.
- 19:20Jeff Dziekan: Uh it's on a different channel.
- 19:22Jeff Dziekan: Darlington.
- 19:23Jeff Dziekan: Darlington.
- 19:25Jeff Dziekan: Uh and then you got Formula One schedule, which uh they got the Japanese Grand Prix on the 29th.
- 19:30Jeff Dziekan: And you know what?
- 19:31Jeff Dziekan: The Saudi Arabian uh I'm just gonna take that back, the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix have been canceled.
- 19:38Jeff Dziekan: Uh they're moving because of the conflict in the East.
- 19:42Jeff Dziekan: Because of bombs.
- 19:43Jeff Dziekan: Because of the East.
- 19:44Jeff Dziekan: Well, more of a terrorism thing.
- 19:45Jeff Dziekan: So that's pretty much it.
- 19:46Jeff Dziekan: Uh go support your local tracks, your local drag strips, your local circle tracks, all that stuff.
- 19:52Jeff Dziekan: Just go out and be a supporter.
- 19:54Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 19:54Don Armstrong: Uh I'm I'm a good supporter, an athletic supporter.
- 19:57Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 19:58Don Armstrong: Um, time now for this week in auto history, Mr.
- 20:00Don Armstrong: Morris.
- 20:01Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 20:01Mike Marrs: Got a few things here that we thought was really interesting this year, or this week in auto history.
- 20:06Mike Marrs: And uh we wanted to start off with March the 16th, 1913 was actually the first uh year that I was born?
- 20:14Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 20:15Mike Marrs: Where the heck did you go?
- 20:17Mike Marrs: There we go.
- 20:19Mike Marrs: Did you lose your place?
- 20:20Mike Marrs: Well, I can't see the light.
- 20:21Mike Marrs: I can't see what the light sun.
- 20:23Mike Marrs: Hold on.
- 20:24Mike Marrs: Here it is.
- 20:25Mike Marrs: There you go, Jeff.
- 20:26Mike Marrs: Thank you.
- 20:26Mike Marrs: How about it?
- 20:27Mike Marrs: Anyway, Mars is the 16th, 1913.
- 20:32Don Armstrong: Look at that impact.
- 20:34Don Armstrong: You'll never see that.
- 20:36Don Armstrong: That's a 396 in power.
- 20:40Mike Marrs: Anyway, I'm sorry.
- 20:41Mike Marrs: No problem.
- 20:42Mike Marrs: So Ford's moving assembly line just didn't change manufacturing.
- 20:45Mike Marrs: It made uh it made performance more potential.
- 20:49Mike Marrs: It cut the building time so it put more cars out and accessible to the masses, and people became enthusiasts overnight.
- 20:57Mike Marrs: So it expanded the whole car culture because there were more racers, more modifiers, and people that were just tinkering with their cars.
- 21:03Mike Marrs: And then when the aftermarket industry was developed, it really kicked things in.
- 21:07Mike Marrs: Now, in March 21st, 1952, mobile economy run, highlights efficient engineering.
- 21:14Mike Marrs: Now, this was really a marketing contest between the automakers.
- 21:18Mike Marrs: The objective was to win the title and show that your car had more uh excellence in the build and the quality of the engine, the quality of the car and how it rode and drove, and it was truly a marketing thing that in people used it for years and they win when they could win that title.
- 21:38Mike Marrs: Then March 18th, 1965, Chevrolet Mark IV Big Block V8 came out.
- 21:43Mike Marrs: Now, this is when Chevrolet pumped this out and got into the horsepower wars of the 1960s.
- 21:48Mike Marrs: They were big engines with big displacement and big torque.
- 21:52Mike Marrs: It became a favorite of drag racers and street machines.
- 21:55Mike Marrs: One of them was the 366 cubic inch, six point zero liter big block V eight engine.
- 22:00Mike Marrs: Primarily used for talking about no stinking liters back then.
- 22:04Mike Marrs: It was all cubic inch.
- 22:05Mike Marrs: 366 cubic inch.
- 22:08Don Armstrong: Thank you.
- 22:08Don Armstrong: They know liters.
- 22:09Don Armstrong: We don't care about that.
- 22:09Mike Marrs: No obla liters.
- 22:10Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 22:11Mike Marrs: So this is the big truck engine, and it found its way into a lot of race cars because it was built heavy duty.
- 22:16Mike Marrs: Now then came the 396 cubic inch engine.
- 22:19Mike Marrs: This was in the 1965 Corvette.
- 22:22Mike Marrs: It was an L78 option rated at 435 horsepower.
- 22:26Mike Marrs: Now you could also get a C Z16 Chevelle, and it came up with 375 horsepower.
- 22:33Mike Marrs: Now in the 1970s the 402 came out, and this was really just a 396 bored out by 30.
- 22:40Mike Marrs: And it wasn't that much larger, but they continued marketing as a 396 and putting it in smaller cars at the same time, which I did not know.
- 22:48Mike Marrs: Then March the 19th, the Chevrolet Cabaro was actually pulled out and codename was Panther.
- 22:55Mike Marrs: I thought that was rather interesting.
- 22:57Mike Marrs: It was built to compete with the Mustang.
- 22:59Mike Marrs: What they call it the Panther because a Panther, a Cabaro is a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.
- 23:05Mike Marrs: That was the marketing thing.
- 23:06Mike Marrs: March 17, 1970, Clean Air Act pressure advanced reshaped performance cars.
- 23:12Mike Marrs: Basically, they killed the muscle cars when they did that.
- 23:14Mike Marrs: And uh they started shifting to the smaller cars, not necessarily brute performance performance, but everything fuel economy.
- 23:22Mike Marrs: Then in March the 21st, 1972, as a result of the Clean Air Act in 1970, the Honda Civic came in and it led the way for a lot of small cars that were more fuel efficient, and a lot of people went that way because of the high price of gasoline, car insurance, and everything else that went into killing off the muscle cars.
- 23:45Mike Marrs: Perfect.
- 23:46Don Armstrong: What goes around comes around.
- 23:47Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 23:48Mike Marrs: That was this week in automotive history.
- 23:51Don Armstrong: Let me swallow this bite of taco here.
- 23:53Don Armstrong: All right.
- 23:54Jeff Dziekan: They're good tacos, too, by the way.
- 23:55Jeff Dziekan: If you haven't come out here and enjoyed a taco, you need to get out here because they're good tacos.
- 23:59Jeff Dziekan: They've got all kinds, they've got chorizo ham and eggs, eggs, they got breakfast beverages.
- 24:05Don Armstrong: And the tacos are free if you give a donation to Shirley's kids and Couture.
- 24:09Don Armstrong: And Stan will match that money.
- 24:11Don Armstrong: So um can't go wrong.
- 24:13Don Armstrong: Plus, it's a great car show.
- 24:14Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 24:14Don Armstrong: And you don't have to show a car, you can come out here and look at the car.
- 24:17Mike Marrs: Yeah, come out and enjoy it.
- 24:18Mike Marrs: It's a free car show.
- 24:20Don Armstrong: Honda is expected to pull the plug on its uh sole electric vehicle in the U.S., the prologue after the current production run ends in December.
- 24:29Don Armstrong: The automaker isn't planning a second generation of the mid-size crossover, which GM builds for Honda on a shared EV platform, according to industry forecaster Auto Forecast Solutions.
- 24:42Don Armstrong: Honda spokesperson declined to comment on future product plans, but said the prologue remains in the lineup.
- 24:47Don Armstrong: Thank you.
- 24:50Don Armstrong: Killing the prologue built in a GM factory in Mexico would mark the latest retreat in Honda's US EV push and cap a brief but volatile chapter for the brand's first major battery electric offering in the market.
- 25:03Don Armstrong: They are in some deep doo-doo.
- 25:05Don Armstrong: They are currently fifteen point eight billion dollars in write downs and expenses tied to the change in strategy going from ice engines to battery electric and now back to ice engines, and they have nothing that looks good, so I don't know what they're gonna do.
- 25:24Don Armstrong: I think they're looking for a buyer.
- 25:26Don Armstrong: Of all people, are you kidding me?
- 25:31Don Armstrong: Hyundai Motor America extorated by a judge for destroying evidence, was ordered to pay a Pennsylvania used vehicle dealership nearly$10 million after losing a key ruling in a fraud lawsuit that dates to 2019.
- 25:46Don Armstrong: Pennsylvania judge called out Hyundai for a filing baseless fraud lawsuit against two used car dealerships that bought 628 recalled 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonatas at auction between February 18 and March 19.
- 26:04Don Armstrong: Dealerships bought the vehicles with defective Theta 2 engines to Hyundai's franchise dealerships for engine replacement or buyback.
- 26:15Don Armstrong: It didn't come out, and uh the amount represents, let's see, part of the sanction for destruction of evidence.
- 26:22Don Armstrong: He ordered Hyundai to pay Knight, which is the name of the company, representing storage costs the dealership incurred for 163 recalled vehicles titled in Knight's name and still in its possession.
- 26:32Don Armstrong: The amount represents$25 a day for almost seven years.
- 26:37Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 26:39Don Armstrong: Dealer Christopher Pantella said in an affidavit.
- 26:43Don Armstrong: Honey, we called more than 1.6 million of those vehicles with the Theta 2 engine.
- 26:48Don Armstrong: They bought them thinking they were gonna, you know, put another engine in it and make some money.
- 26:52Don Armstrong: Guess what?
- 26:54Don Armstrong: Didn't work.
- 26:56Don Armstrong: That's some big doo-doo on that.
- 26:58Don Armstrong: Big duty on that.
- 27:04Jeff Dziekan: There's a little thing going on here.
- 27:05Jeff Dziekan: They're trying to take pictures of the of the youngster.
- 27:08Don Armstrong: What is that, a car?
- 27:08Don Armstrong: I don't have no idea.
- 27:10Mike Marrs: It looks like it's got the light hand on it, but I can't really tell about the rest of it.
- 27:15Don Armstrong: Well, Morris, I think that you need to get up, go over there, and find out what it is for all of us.
- 27:21Mike Marrs: After I kick this commercial off when we go to break.
- 27:23Mike Marrs: Yeah, you don't want to be late on that.
- 27:24Mike Marrs: I don't want to be late.
- 27:25Mike Marrs: Don't be late.
- 27:26Don Armstrong: Don't be late.
- 27:26Mike Marrs: Don't be late.
- 27:27Mike Marrs: Again.
- 27:28Don Armstrong: Again.
- 27:28Don Armstrong: And be sure and make bring the checklist and that piece of equipment that you keep leaving at the house.
- 27:34Mike Marrs: I have it.
- 27:34Mike Marrs: It's in my pocket.
- 27:35Mike Marrs: It's in his pocket.
- 27:36Don Armstrong: Did somebody bring it to you?
- 27:37Mike Marrs: No.
- 27:38Mike Marrs: No, I had it in my pocket.
- 27:39Mike Marrs: The point that I left at the house is in my pocket.
- 27:41Mike Marrs: Oh my god.
- 27:43Mike Marrs: The other one's broke.
- 27:44Mike Marrs: We're shipping it back.
- 27:45Mike Marrs: And that's in the other pocket.
- 27:47Don Armstrong: I don't want to know what's in his pockets.
- 27:49Don Armstrong: I can only imagine.
- 27:50Don Armstrong: Probably a whole.
- 27:51Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 27:52Don Armstrong: Then there's a whole nother story too.
- 27:55Don Armstrong: There's a whole nother story to that.
- 27:56Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 27:57Jeff Dziekan: How many fingers you got in your pocket?
- 27:58Jeff Dziekan: 11.
- 28:00Don Armstrong: Oh my God.
- 28:02Don Armstrong: You know, there is that.
