Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beecham, and I've got good news.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: The people standing before Peter had heard the truth about Jesus.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: They had heard of his mighty works.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: They had heard of his crucifixion.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: They had heard that God raised him from the dead and made him both Lord and Christ.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Then the word reached their hearts.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: With conviction pressing upon them, they asked Peter and the other apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: They were not asking for a theological debate.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: They were asking how to respond to the gospel.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And Peter did not leave them wondering.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Acts 2.38 records his answer.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: First, Peter said, Repent.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Repentance is more than regret.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It is a change of mind that changes your direction.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: It is turning from sin and turning toward God.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: The same crowd that had been pricked in the heart was now called to act upon this conviction.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Baptism was not presented as a reward for people who had already made themselves worthy.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: It was part of the apostolic response to the gospel.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Everyone was invited to obey.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The name of the one Peter had just preached, Jesus Christ, was placed at the center of their response.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Then came the promise, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: The gift poured out upon the waiting disciples was not the end with the people in the upper room.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Peter was speaking to the convicted crowd.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: The Holy Ghost was a gift they could receive.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And Peter continued, For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Unto you, unto your children, unto those afar off.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The promise moves outward like winding circles in the water.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: It reaches the people who heard Peter that morning.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It reaches the next generation.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: It reaches beyond Jerusalem, and it reaches as many as the Lord our God shall call.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Peter continued testifying and exhort the crowd, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Then those who gladly received his word were baptized.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: About three thousand souls were added to the church that day.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Think of the change that took place.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: They arrived in Jerusalem as visitors to a feast.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: They gathered because of a sound they could not explain.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: They listened as Peter opened the scriptures.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: They were pricked in their hearts.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: They asked, What shall we do?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And when they gladly received the word, they obeyed.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Repentance was not the end of the story.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: It was the turning point that opened the way for obedience, forgiveness, and the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Perhaps you have asked, What does God want me to do?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Peter's answer has not been lost.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: It remains in the Word of God.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But did this promise remain only in Jerusalem?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: No.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow we will follow it beyond the city, to Samaria, to a Gentile household, and to sincere disciples who had heard only the baptism of John.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I hope the message today touched your heart and causes you to think and to see and have a good day.
