- 0:39SPEAKER_10: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_10: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:45SPEAKER_10: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_10: And more importantly than that, we have two very special guests.
- 0:51SPEAKER_10: Matt Workman, Joe Goodman from the Bear Den Podcast.
- 0:55SPEAKER_10: What is going on, dudes?
- 0:57SPEAKER_11: It's Butt Bowl week, baby.
- 0:59SPEAKER_10: It is.
- 1:00SPEAKER_10: It's a magical time here.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: This is unironically my favorite episode of the year.
- 1:07unknown: Yeah.
- 1:07SPEAKER_11: Is it because Baylor currently has a winning streak in Lubbock?
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Uh no.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Maybe.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: Maybe it's like some sort of deep-seated self-loathing that I wrangle with every night when I stare at the ceiling pan.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: But I it might have something to do with that.
- 1:23SPEAKER_11: I so I have a legit question for you guys.
- 1:26SPEAKER_11: So you you introduced the Patrick Mahomes jerseys last week, correct?
- 1:31SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we did.
- 1:32SPEAKER_11: Was was that a like was there a concerted effort to make sure that you did not do a Pat Mahomes associated event and Lubbock against Baylor again this time?
- 1:42SPEAKER_10: Honestly, I I think that was completely on purpose.
- 1:44SPEAKER_10: And now I'm I'm upset because it's still homecoming week.
- 1:47SPEAKER_10: And it's like, why we don't need to do any of that?
- 1:50SPEAKER_10: We did way too much the last time you guys came to Lubbock.
- 1:53SPEAKER_10: And I don't know why they decided to continue this, but yes, we're not gonna bust out the Pat Mahomes jerseys for this game.
- 2:00SPEAKER_10: That will be when Dion comes to town.
- 2:02SPEAKER_10: So thank goodness.
- 2:04SPEAKER_10: Because uh Tristan and I disagree heavily on this.
- 2:08SPEAKER_10: I think they look like shit.
- 2:10SPEAKER_10: Uh and Tristan likes them.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: They're a fun mix up.
- 2:14SPEAKER_11: I see here's my thing.
- 2:16SPEAKER_11: I love I I love the old Adidas stuff, like this the basketball stuff that everybody hated.
- 2:23SPEAKER_11: Because I'm very much a proponent of it's college sports.
- 2:26SPEAKER_11: Let's make this the weirdest shit that we can ever possibly like.
- 2:29SPEAKER_11: I love Maryland's uniforms, absolutely love Maryland's uniforms.
- 2:34SPEAKER_11: Um, and it's like Texas Tech and Adidas decided like let's get weird with it, and then just somehow made it boring.
- 2:41SPEAKER_10: Yeah, they didn't want to try too hard because we were real weird in like when we were freshmen and sophomores in 14 and 15, they did some weird shit with the Keeksbury years.
- 2:51SPEAKER_10: I mean, that that was under armor, but they like the Texas flag Texas flag, yeah, Texas flags.
- 2:56SPEAKER_11: Somehow you had tertiary tertiary blue involved.
- 2:58SPEAKER_10: They had like a they had like a faded red to black jersey, and a faded white to black one as well.
- 3:04SPEAKER_10: The white they put the matador logo, they just slapped the whole thing on the screen.
- 3:08SPEAKER_10: Everything was chrome, everything was chrome, yes you know, but we didn't win.
- 3:13SPEAKER_10: Well, you know, as an MS- So it made those games a little less memorable.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: At 18, I thought they were all kind of sick as hell personally.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: Like, uh come on, yeah.
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: Let's just see something weird and cool on game.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: So let's be real.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: That's what you wore when Pat played there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he got weird with it.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 3:32SPEAKER_10: And you know, we love Pat.
- 3:33SPEAKER_10: We love the we love watching old highlights of Pat.
- 3:37SPEAKER_10: We don't like watching those results or those full games because they were miserable.
- 3:41SPEAKER_10: I mean, the electric five and seven isn't like uh when the fun is five and seven, buddy.
- 3:47SPEAKER_10: So so much heartbreak, so much awful stuff.
- 3:50SPEAKER_10: But you know what's not heartbreaking is this season.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: Well, not for you guys, but look, Steve, we're talking about two teams coming off of bye week wins right now.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: Big wins, big wins.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: I actually heard rumors.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure Baylor had a lot of things.
- 4:04SPEAKER_12: I'm not sure Baylor won the bye week.
- 4:06SPEAKER_12: Yeah, I heard it.
- 4:07SPEAKER_12: It was uh it was a it was a let's not speak too soon.
- 4:10SPEAKER_10: It's a hard fun overtime battle with the bye week.
- 4:12SPEAKER_12: It was it was a zero-zero tie.
- 4:14SPEAKER_08: Uh somehow Baylor found a way not to close out a zero-zero tie.
- 4:20SPEAKER_10: So you guys are great sports coming on, and we do appreciate it.
- 4:24SPEAKER_10: Let's let's kind of talk about the Baylor Bears this year.
- 4:27SPEAKER_10: I know you guys maybe it's miserable for you guys at this point, but I it's confusing because I'm looking at them at two and four, two wins against Air Force Tarleton State, four losses.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: Juggernauts.
- 4:39SPEAKER_10: Most of them have been tight against pretty good competition.
- 4:43SPEAKER_10: I me personally, I think this Baylor team is better than their record indicates.
- 4:48SPEAKER_10: Um, I wanted to get y'all's perspective though, because you guys have been watching every second of this team this year.
- 4:54SPEAKER_11: So I legitimately do think that this team should have four wins right now.
- 4:58SPEAKER_11: Like they they they absolutely should have beaten Colorado.
- 5:02SPEAKER_11: And if not for just being idiots and absolute bad luck to start the uh the BYU game, they they they looked like the better football team for about two-thirds of that game against BYU.
- 5:17SPEAKER_11: Um and they they did look like the better team against Colorado.
- 5:21SPEAKER_11: Um so I think I think this team should have two more wins.
- 5:25SPEAKER_11: The problem is is you can only like maintain that mentally and physically of like, oh hey, we're actually a four-win team and not have it just wear you down, right?
- 5:37SPEAKER_11: And I that Iowa State game that we played right before the bye week worries me because it's almost like the one thing that we can't have happen is the team to just finally be like, all right, well, we're losers and we give in.
- 5:47SPEAKER_11: Um, and so that's the fear I have around this team right now.
- 5:50SPEAKER_11: I do think that like the sum of the parts is better than the results in the win-loss column, but I I don't know if they're gonna be able to like maintain handling that pressure to be able to win like four more games to get both eligible.
- 6:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: My thing is like it's year five.
- 6:10SPEAKER_08: So it's like that's fine if this is year two, but we're talking about year five with steady regression through 23, from 21 down to 23, and then yes, the team is better than 23, but they were awful.
- 6:28SPEAKER_08: So and the most concerning thing for me, I mean everything Joe said is correct.
- 6:35SPEAKER_08: The team's way better, they're close games, they should have more wins than they do.
- 6:39SPEAKER_08: It was the end of the game of the Iowa State when you're down 12, you need a score, and you're punting when it's fourth and one.
- 6:48SPEAKER_08: That is to me, I mean, it's like surrender football.
- 6:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that was that's concerning.
- 6:55SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it's um I I've watched two halves of Baylor this year.
- 6:59SPEAKER_10: One was the first half of BYU.
- 7:02SPEAKER_10: Oh, we'll watch two halves of Baylor this year.
- 7:05SPEAKER_10: And the and the and the sudden the other one was the second half of Iowa State.
- 7:08SPEAKER_10: So I don't know if I'm the bad luck for the Bears, but it's it's a nightmare for what I've seen of Baylor.
- 7:15SPEAKER_10: But then I look at the final results and I'm like, I mean, they were in this.
- 7:19SPEAKER_10: The fact that they came back against BYU was astounding to me.
- 7:22SPEAKER_10: I know you're at home, but that's a good BYU team.
- 7:26SPEAKER_10: And for y'all to even have a chance there at the end after what we saw in the first quarter, second quarter, is is pretty impressive.
- 7:33SPEAKER_10: But yeah, I mean, Matt, you're you're totally right.
- 7:36SPEAKER_10: Y'all did the complete opposite of kind of what you expected in the Dave Viranda era so far.
- 7:41SPEAKER_10: You've done uh you did an incredible year one, won the Big 12, went to heights, you know, that y'all didn't expect probably, and now it's just been kind of constant regression um here.
- 7:53SPEAKER_10: So I don't know.
- 7:54SPEAKER_10: I guess we can kind of flip Tristan.
- 7:56SPEAKER_10: I know you wanted to talk about you know Dave Aranda and how how they're feeling about it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, for sure.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: But first, I I wanted to ask the guys, you know, since you this is unmistakably a disappointing year vibe, but could you all give us a gauge at what a healthy Baylor fan thinks is a good fifth year?
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: And I'm obviously I'm not saying, well, at this point need to be at the Big 12 championship every year, but like what's like the healthy Baylor mind of expectations?
- 8:22SPEAKER_11: So I think the common theme, because this is this is a question that is thrown around in our circles for sure.
- 8:28SPEAKER_11: Yeah, because there's different eras of Baylor fan too, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_11: Like I come from like I was in school with Guy Morris to start, you know, like the expectations then are wildly different than they are now, you know.
- 8:40SPEAKER_11: And we have, you know, we interact with lots of people that they were there for like the Kevin Steele era or even during the Grand Taft era.
- 8:46SPEAKER_11: So there's there's different levels of what people expect.
- 8:49SPEAKER_11: But I would say the overarching view is they want Baylor to be a competitive team every year, and by that that they are at least in the conversation to compete for the conference title in November.
- 9:03SPEAKER_11: You know, like it doesn't mean that you're in first place or that you're undefeated or that you don't have multiple losses.
- 9:09SPEAKER_11: It's just like you are not mathematically eliminated yet when you get towards the you know back third of the season.
- 9:17SPEAKER_11: Like you want to still be in the conversation to say, like, hey, you know, if if things go our way, a couple of teams get upset, we win out, yeah, we can be in Arlington with the mixing in of every few years of actually getting there.
- 9:31SPEAKER_11: I think that's what most Baylor fans want at this point and kind of expect to be good.
- 9:36SPEAKER_11: Um, because I mean we're not Alabama and we're never gonna be Alabama, right?
- 9:40SPEAKER_11: Um, but we just nobody wants to go back to the the early Big 12 days.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's that's a funny that's uh that's an interesting response because um it's if you ask if you ask a tech fan, I think uh the average tech mind is even uh probably more low-bally than that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, but it's just it's interesting since y'all been able to experience this uh decade of success.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: That's kind of shifted your mindset into thinking that you know every year you can make a run for the championship, uh, right or wrong, of course.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: Um I I also honestly I thought you're all you were about to say um at minimum you make a bowl game and you know every other year or so you start you want to see something pop, but as long as you like maintain a healthy competitive edge, you're doing okay.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean I think like somebody like me, I'm fine with that.
- 10:27SPEAKER_11: Like, yeah, when I when I got to Baylor in 2006, they hadn't made a bowl game since '96.
- 10:34SPEAKER_11: So we were we were in a 10-year drought and we didn't make one until 2010.
- 10:40SPEAKER_11: And it was like so, like my first few years there, it was like all we cared about is like, can we reach six?
- 10:46SPEAKER_11: Like, can you get to six wins?
- 10:48SPEAKER_11: And yeah, that mindset is is not in my head anymore.
- 10:52SPEAKER_11: Like, I never want to go back to just being like, oh golly, I hope we get more than five, you know.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: Matt, do you agree with that?
- 10:58SPEAKER_08: Or yeah, I think for overall, like for what a healthy Baylor season is, I think, like Joe said, bare minimum should be uh bowl eligibility.
- 11:08SPEAKER_08: Like that's a down year, make a bowl game.
- 11:10SPEAKER_08: No, you know, six and six.
- 11:13SPEAKER_08: But you should be competing in November in most years in in the running.
- 11:21SPEAKER_08: Because, like you said, like we, you know, Baylor has gone in you know, in 21, like we won the Big 12, you know, had three different coaches take him to the Big 12 championship game.
- 11:32SPEAKER_08: So that's the thing with Baylor, like is like we're either like really good or awful.
- 11:40SPEAKER_08: There's no in between.
- 11:41SPEAKER_08: There's rarely are we like six and six, seven and five.
- 11:43SPEAKER_08: It's you're either gonna win 11 games or you're gonna lose 10.
- 11:47SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's where we go.
- 11:49SPEAKER_08: And so I think for some like outside for me as a Baylor fan, I would like to be consistent, consistently.
- 11:56SPEAKER_08: That'd be that'd be nice.
- 11:57SPEAKER_08: A few Bo Pollini years wouldn't be 10 and 3, 7 and 5, 8 and 4, you know, you know, or something like that, you know.
- 12:04SPEAKER_12: But not I just want a head coach for yeah, like I just dude, don't we know it?
- 12:11SPEAKER_12: We're talking about the cares.
- 12:13SPEAKER_10: We just we just want a coach for 10 years.
- 12:15SPEAKER_10: That's and I know y'all know how that feels.
- 12:16SPEAKER_10: Y'all know that y'all just we know we know how it feels in just about every sport except for baseball.
- 12:21SPEAKER_10: Um, yeah, and it's like it's super frustrating constantly having to, you know, you're basically just restarting every time you get a new coach, you reset no matter what the guys you have, unless you are that tier of Alabama, but even we're seeing that Alabama, you know, is having a little bit of uh of a turn with a new coach, and it's just like I don't know, man.
- 12:41SPEAKER_10: Our our I feel like we're the same when it comes to what the ceiling of our program should be, or what the floor of our our program should be should be alike.
- 12:50SPEAKER_11: I mean, based off of just location, resources, uh history, because let's let's be real like Texas Tech and Baylor are the only non-sec Texas schools who have spent essentially their entire existence in college football in power conferences, uh, you know, to a degree.
- 13:09SPEAKER_11: Um, because Baylor's always been in the Southwest Conference.
- 13:11SPEAKER_11: You guys were in the border, but that was still with like Arizona, Arizona State.
- 13:13SPEAKER_11: Like that was still a legit conference, you know.
- 13:16SPEAKER_11: TCU, U of H, like they had to go spend some years out in the wilderness, and TCU did has done a great job in coming back.
- 13:24SPEAKER_11: But you know, like I I've always felt like you know, tech and baylor, they should always be at the forefront of the conversation in the Big 12, you know, like even it since the since the latest round of realignment.
- 13:35SPEAKER_11: I mean, like Mac Rhodes was heavily involved, Kirby Hokutt was heavily involved.
- 13:39SPEAKER_11: So it's like, you know, there was this kind of this expectation, I think, that it was gonna be, you know, kind of a combination of Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State.
- 13:47SPEAKER_11: They'd be like, we're we're gonna be the big boys now, we're gonna run this conference.
- 13:51SPEAKER_11: And Baylor's done a really good job, I think, in the athletic department as a whole.
- 13:55SPEAKER_11: They're trying to make the right moves to improve in baseball.
- 13:58SPEAKER_11: They've stayed really competitive in women's basketball even after losing Kim Mulkey.
- 14:02SPEAKER_11: We know what Scott Drew's doing with the men's basketball program.
- 14:05SPEAKER_11: Tennis is great, you know, all the all the sports that you know, we quote unquote say we don't care about.
- 14:08SPEAKER_11: We've won what eight straight acrobatics and tumbling national.
- 14:11SPEAKER_09: Don't talk about baseball.
- 14:13SPEAKER_11: Um, but I'm just saying, like, we're we're trying to make moves to be better there.
- 14:18SPEAKER_11: So it was like you want to be at the forefront of of this new Big 12.
- 14:22SPEAKER_11: And it unfortunately in college athletics, if you drop the ball in football and you're not Duke or Kansas, people kind of ignore some of the other stuff.
- 14:33SPEAKER_11: And so that's I think where this is the timing is really disappointing because we're seeing TCU, you know, they make a national championship recently.
- 14:42SPEAKER_11: Now they've they've they've fallen off, but um it's it's tough to see, you know, tech maintaining that, like still being good and everything, and kind of looks like Joey might be turning a corner there because he can actually win on the road now, and um you know, doing good things on the football side um up at Lubbock.
- 15:01SPEAKER_11: And so that like that's what Baylor fans want is it's like we kind of had this perception in our heads like we were these we were these big badasses coming out of 2021, and we were going to continue it forward.
- 15:11SPEAKER_11: We had the special football coach, and now it's just kind of fallen flat.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, speaking of speaking of like how Baylor fans feel, like what is the tribal warfare like in the fan base about that guy right now?
- 15:24SPEAKER_11: Matt, I'll give you this one.
- 15:26SPEAKER_10: They had a they had a great Tuesday practice.
- 15:29SPEAKER_11: That's the that's the good news.
- 15:31SPEAKER_11: Drizdy, I appreciate that question.
- 15:35SPEAKER_08: I would say the majority of Baylor fans are probably out on Dave Aranda at this point.
- 15:43SPEAKER_08: Barring some miraculous six-game winning streak, and it end up eight and four this year.
- 15:48SPEAKER_08: Um it's probably people ready for a different voice.
- 15:54SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I mean, there's there's actual analysis when it comes to this, and then there's kind of what we look on it on its face.
- 16:01SPEAKER_10: And it's Dave Aranda's not a guy that you can easily believe in.
- 16:06SPEAKER_10: I mean, to me, with just looking at him, how he talks, his demeanor, you know, he's not an emotional guy, he's not somebody that's gonna kind of rally the fan base, and he's never been that way, but he's you know, he's had the benefit of the doubt because he won the Big 12 in year one.
- 16:21SPEAKER_10: But to me, uh as soon as the winning stops with a guy like that, it is just downhill from there.
- 16:30SPEAKER_11: Yeah, he's had a lot of like um campy kind of things, you know, like like there's he, you know, he when he quotes the Baron stained bears and you know in a press conference, when you're winning, everybody loves it.
- 16:42SPEAKER_11: When when you're losing, everybody's like, what the hell are you talking about, bro?
- 16:46SPEAKER_11: Um I will say I am in a faction of probably 10% to a quarter of our fan base.
- 16:54SPEAKER_11: That while I am highly disappointed and believe somebody that makes five million plus a year to do a job should only be continued being compensated for that job if they're performing in it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_11: Um uh since the this season started, since we didn't fire him after last season, it was like everything I had heard was he needed to make a bowl game.
- 17:18SPEAKER_11: Like that's that's that's what the expectation is coming out of last year.
- 17:22SPEAKER_11: Get back to bowl eligibility, get to 500, you're six and six, show improvements in recruiting, get NIL back on track because they kind of admitted they were behind in that, and and see where you go from there.
- 17:34SPEAKER_11: And they've done a great job at recruiting.
- 17:36SPEAKER_11: The the recruiting that they've done this offseason and even into this season has been stellar compared to the last couple years, especially.
- 17:43SPEAKER_11: They've gotten a new level of NIL commitment, um, which I'm hoping is matching the level of what we're doing on the basketball side of things, but there's they've completely revamped how they do football in I.
- 17:53SPEAKER_11: So those are two of the check marks there.
- 17:55SPEAKER_11: And it's like, but can you get to that can you get to that six and six number?
- 17:59SPEAKER_11: So a lot of people sitting there seeing us at two and four are like, well, I'm already done.
- 18:03SPEAKER_11: And I'm I'm I'm always of the motion of like when he loses number seven, I'll I'm out, but I'm giving him until that happens.
- 18:11SPEAKER_11: So you know it's not impossible looking at our schedule.
- 18:14SPEAKER_11: Like, yeah, TCU's garbage ass, like TCU's just a dumpster fire.
- 18:18SPEAKER_11: Uh we've got uh, I think we still got Kansas, uh Kansas on our schedule.
- 18:23SPEAKER_09: Houston, Houston and Kansas, oh yeah, and Obama State.
- 18:27SPEAKER_11: So like there are there are very winnable games still left on the schedule, and the last two games that we've lost have been to top 20 undefeated teams.
- 18:37SPEAKER_11: So it's like those are games that you're technically supposed to lose, and so you're not supposed to feel as bad after them, but when they're just grouped together like this, it makes it so much harder.
- 18:46SPEAKER_11: So I'm still trying to be an adult and be like, hey, I I gave the guy six and six, and he hasn't gotten to loss seven yet.
- 18:54SPEAKER_11: So I'm gonna shut my mouth until he gets there.
- 18:56SPEAKER_11: And that's kind of where I'm sitting.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Do you think there's a real potential that uh Baylor University tarmac this guy during the season, or do you think he no matter what uh sails through the season?
- 19:07SPEAKER_08: And then I think it depends on if how like if you go and lose tech, lose Oklahoma State, lose a TCU, yeah.
- 19:18SPEAKER_08: That could be a chance where like you've had like you know every you've lost since week two.
- 19:23SPEAKER_08: You have this, you know, that would be yeah, let's make a change.
- 19:27SPEAKER_08: If they lose to TCU, yeah, then TCU at home when you're honoring the Big 12 back-to-back champions, like, yeah, that would be a real Oklahoma State's bad, man.
- 19:42SPEAKER_10: And if they go into McClain and they win, uh that's tough.
- 19:45SPEAKER_10: That's I mean, we were we were questioning before the season on our podcast is Aranda gonna be here for the tech game?
- 19:52SPEAKER_10: And now that we know that he's here for the tech game, is he going to survive after the tech game?
- 19:56SPEAKER_11: Because he will survive after the tech game.
- 19:59SPEAKER_11: My my barometer for this is uh my understanding of Macroads, R A D.
- 20:06SPEAKER_11: And I believe he's only ever actually fired one football coach, and that was Tony Levine at U of H when he was the AD there before he went to Missouri.
- 20:15SPEAKER_11: And he fired, he technically fired Levine in season, but he did it after the last regular season game.
- 20:22SPEAKER_11: That team that team was bowl eligible when he when when Levine got fired, so he fired him before the bowl game, and then they had an interim coach the bowl game.
- 20:31SPEAKER_11: So I and knowing the relationship that Mac and Aranda have, and the entire athletic department and Aranda, um I unless he gets to a point where you you get to two and seven having lost to to TCU, I think you have to make the decision then.
- 20:49SPEAKER_11: It's just like okay, sorry, we we've got to get on this now.
- 20:52SPEAKER_11: But unless something like that happens, I think Aranda coaches the year out.
- 20:56SPEAKER_11: Um I think I think they give him that opportunity because they they love him, they really, really do.
- 21:02SPEAKER_11: They they want him to succeed, and it it's almost starting to feel and I like I can't believe I'm gonna say this.
- 21:09SPEAKER_11: Um, and Baylor fans might get mad at me, and all the rest of the Big 12, and even Iowa State fans might get mad at me about this.
- 21:15SPEAKER_11: It almost feels like Paul Rhodes.
- 21:17SPEAKER_11: Like everybody, everybody loved Paul Rhodes, but he was a terrible football coach.
- 21:23SPEAKER_11: And they like when they fired him, it was like they didn't even want to fire him, but like because it was like, we love you, but and that's how I feel like the athletic department feels about Aranda.
- 21:32SPEAKER_11: It's like a it's like an Iowa State Paul Rhodes thing.
- 21:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like I think Dave Aranda did Dave Randa did stuff and made decisions like when things were like covet era stuff, where it's like it saved like jobs in the athletic department.
- 21:46SPEAKER_08: So they want to give him every opportunity to succeed.
- 21:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, because he they like him as a the person.
- 21:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we I mean you saw like what was it was it last week whenever Joe and That picture of Mac Rhodes where he's hunched over on the sidelines, like that was the BYU game, yeah.
- 22:04SPEAKER_08: BYU game, he's physically ill about that.
- 22:06SPEAKER_08: I mean, you can tell like he wants to win, he wants Dave to win badly.
- 22:11SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 22:12SPEAKER_10: I uh we go back to Kingsbury.
- 22:14SPEAKER_10: That was he was here six years and it was three years too long, and we wanted it to happen, and it he's one of our own, and he's a great dude, and he you know, he hyped up the fan base, but he just wasn't it.
- 22:27SPEAKER_10: And I don't know, I don't know.
- 22:29SPEAKER_10: We'll see Dave Aranda moving forward.
- 22:31SPEAKER_10: Um, you know, with Baylor, they do have a game this week against a five and one team in Texas Tech, which we did not expect to be here.
- 22:39SPEAKER_10: I I don't think anybody expected us to be here.
- 22:43SPEAKER_10: We're getting votes slightly unfair.
- 22:49SPEAKER_04: Don't even sleep number.
- 22:50SPEAKER_10: I will say it's looking better as we go on.
- 22:53SPEAKER_10: Arizona State's looking a little better.
- 22:55SPEAKER_10: Yeah, Cincinnati continues to win, so they're looking like a better team.
- 22:58SPEAKER_10: But um, let's talk about the onfield stuff because I'm looking at Baylor and I'm a little confused as to what happened with the quarterback situation.
- 23:07SPEAKER_10: Uh, like I said, I haven't been paying attention.
- 23:09SPEAKER_10: I know Daquan Finn was getting a lot of hype going into the season.
- 23:13SPEAKER_10: I believe he got injured in the Utah game, or did he get okay?
- 23:16SPEAKER_10: I think he was injured.
- 23:17SPEAKER_10: Yeah, but it looks like they're just rolling with Sawyer going forward here.
- 23:21SPEAKER_10: Is that kind of just the move that Aranda's expecting to move forward with?
- 23:26SPEAKER_11: Yeah, Sawyer is is clearly, clearly the starting quarterback.
- 23:32SPEAKER_11: Yeah, you guys will love him.
- 23:34SPEAKER_11: He's he is a West Texas boy.
- 23:37SPEAKER_10: Yeah, West he's from West Texas, I believe.
- 23:40SPEAKER_10: Yeah, Lubbock.
- 23:41SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 23:42SPEAKER_10: LBK.
- 23:43SPEAKER_10: Hey, yeah.
- 23:44SPEAKER_10: Uh so so what it he just kind of showed out as soon as he started.
- 23:48SPEAKER_10: It was like when he came in from Utah, he was the offense was blowing more, wasn't it?
- 23:52SPEAKER_08: When uh Daquan looked like he was just struggling with like the offense.
- 24:01SPEAKER_08: Uncomfortable is like what me and Joe said.
- 24:03SPEAKER_08: He also like his arm strength was wasn't good.
- 24:06SPEAKER_08: He was yeah, weird.
- 24:08SPEAKER_08: And then Sawyer comes in, and you you we saw we like, well, he's just like much more comfortable.
- 24:15SPEAKER_08: Under I mean, he comes from a similar offense um from when he was a was in Lubbock, and then that's what he was recruited to do, kind of similar offense at Mississippi State.
- 24:24SPEAKER_08: So he just had a better feel for it.
- 24:27SPEAKER_08: And then he's you know, he's the type of player he is.
- 24:30SPEAKER_08: I mean, I'm kind of shocked, like because it was a always said through like spring and even fall, like they you know, they they delayed and delayed a decision, and people who didn't understand why because of all the fanfare and like hype for Daquan Finn and the money, yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, plus the yeah, he was NIO, you know, cat quarterback.
- 24:49SPEAKER_08: He got he got the bag, yeah, yeah.
- 24:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, because I mean Michigan wanted him, you know.
- 24:53SPEAKER_08: He was the Wisconsin, like he was a Big Ten like favorite.
- 24:56SPEAKER_11: He was a Mac player of the year.
- 24:58SPEAKER_11: Um he what was crazy was during the offseason, Matt and I were like hearing from people that like like the quarterback battle is real, you know, like and like I even like I had people tell me, like, I like I'm hearing that Sawyer might win it.
- 25:11SPEAKER_11: And I was like, you know, like I know your choices are terrible.
- 25:13SPEAKER_11: There's no way that Daquan Finn's not gonna be the starting quarterback.
- 25:16SPEAKER_11: And then the the Tarleton game, the the game we started with, we put the backups in in the fourth quarter, and Sawyer came out and threw a couple of passes.
- 25:25SPEAKER_11: And Matt and I were there, and we kind of looked at each other and we were like, That looks pretty good, like yeah, yeah, that looks pretty good.
- 25:31SPEAKER_11: And then he came in man against uh he came in against BYU.
- 25:36SPEAKER_11: Um, or sorry, color was it Colorado or BYU?
- 25:38SPEAKER_11: Colorado first.
- 25:40SPEAKER_11: Um well Air Force was his first Air Force, that's what it was.
- 25:43SPEAKER_11: Yes, yes, yes.
- 25:44SPEAKER_11: Game three because Daquan finished the Utah game.
- 25:47SPEAKER_11: He got hurt in that game, but he finished it, and then we found out it was like it was nerve damage or something in his in his shoulder.
- 25:53SPEAKER_11: Um, and so like he was in a sling, um, and he came in against Air Force and he just slung it around the field, man.
- 26:00SPEAKER_11: And he like Matt said, he just looks he looks to have a completely different level of comfort with what he's doing out there and come and also a command of the offense.
- 26:09SPEAKER_11: He's he's been one of the biggest bright spots of the season when you're sitting here and you're like, we're two and four, but Sawyer looks really good.
- 26:18SPEAKER_10: Yeah, I mean, he you're it's not like you guys aren't scoring, you know, 31, 28, you know, Iowa State's a little different story, but to put 21 points on that defense is you know, at least notable.
- 26:28SPEAKER_10: Um he's also yeah, staff points for sure, but and he's doing it on the ground.
- 26:34SPEAKER_10: I mean, he's leading the team in uh rushing touchdowns as well.
- 26:37SPEAKER_10: So it seems like he's uh that I don't know if that's a testament to y'all's running backs or if that's a testament to Swears.
- 26:43SPEAKER_11: Our running game is terrible.
- 26:45SPEAKER_11: A lot of a lot of he's he's like 40 yards away from being our leading rusher on the season, and and it's mostly him running for his life.
- 26:52SPEAKER_10: So what I mean, what's going on?
- 26:54SPEAKER_10: Because like Richard Reese's been in the program for a while.
- 26:56SPEAKER_10: Uh, I know Dominic Richardson was I think he was at Oklahoma State previously, uh, and then you got these other two guys.
- 27:02SPEAKER_10: It just seems like it's just like four guys that aren't producing.
- 27:06SPEAKER_10: Is that kind of the game?
- 27:07SPEAKER_08: I think it's really it really, but also like they're all recruited for a wide zone offense.
- 27:15SPEAKER_08: And Spavidall is more of inside zone running game, and we don't have, in my opinion, the appropriate backs to with a skill set to be come you know good in what they want to do.
- 27:28SPEAKER_08: I mean, Washington is the is the best one, I think, who can do it.
- 27:33SPEAKER_08: Um, even Pintergrass, they they've had some success.
- 27:36SPEAKER_08: Reese himself, I mean, he's a wide zone running back.
- 27:40SPEAKER_11: Reese has been hurt as well.
- 27:41SPEAKER_08: And he's been hurt.
- 27:42SPEAKER_08: Richardson was hurt beginning of the year.
- 27:44SPEAKER_08: He stays.
- 27:45SPEAKER_11: The other thing, Baylor has been way more hurt than I think anybody's talking about.
- 27:49SPEAKER_11: Like crazy, like Caden Jenkins is probably supposed to be our best defensive player.
- 27:54SPEAKER_08: The BYU game, we were sitting there, we're like half of our defensive starters aren't on the field.
- 27:59SPEAKER_11: Yeah, and in the BYU game, like it was it was a combination of injuries and disciplinary.
- 28:04SPEAKER_11: So, like and they didn't announce it until after the game, too.
- 28:08SPEAKER_11: So, like we were in the we were in the press box for that one, and like everybody's walking around asking each other, like, do you know, like who why the hell, like, why is Reggie Bush, you know, our third string corner starting out here?
- 28:19SPEAKER_11: Like, why like why are these guys covering Jaden Higgins in the Iowa State game?
- 28:22SPEAKER_10: You know, it's like uh I feel like I feel like Aranda's always been kind of sneaky with that stuff.
- 28:27SPEAKER_10: He he loves his questionables, he loves his ores on the depth chart.
- 28:32SPEAKER_10: He's uh yeah, he just doesn't want he doesn't want anybody to know what's gonna happen.
- 28:37SPEAKER_11: Oh man, I can't remember how many ores we had last year, but Phillip at 10-12 counted counted off.
- 28:42SPEAKER_11: We won we won the ore battle last year.
- 28:43SPEAKER_08: I think we had 21 at the before game one, 21 ore.
- 28:48SPEAKER_10: That would drive me up a wall if I'm looking at this team.
- 28:51SPEAKER_10: I'm like, who is starting?
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Man's made to be a rowing coach.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: Only high IQ people will get that joke.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: That rot when I watch Rick and Morty.
- 29:03SPEAKER_11: But uh, I want you guys to tell me though, because we walked out of the Tarleton game week one, Matt and I, and we we went back, we packed up the tailgate, and we walked over to Matt's truck.
- 29:17SPEAKER_11: And I'm like, we literally sat in the parking lot outside of McLean Stadium watching Texas Tech, Abilene Christian.
- 29:26SPEAKER_11: Yeah, and like Bonte Wildcat offense, Abilene Christian.
- 29:30SPEAKER_11: Watching you guys not win that game, but watch Abilene Christian lose that game, and then the following week you go on the road and you you lose like multi-based.
- 29:43SPEAKER_11: That was a beatdown to Washington State.
- 29:47SPEAKER_11: What changed?
- 29:48SPEAKER_11: What happened?
- 29:49SPEAKER_08: Because like the two games into the season, I was like, I was like, Yeah, I was like, I tweeted at Tristan, I was like, Man, it takes like low-key bad.
- 29:57SPEAKER_10: Like no, I mean, we were we were in our fields after Washington State.
- 30:01SPEAKER_10: I mean, we were like, This is Joey Maguire gonna get fired after this year.
- 30:06SPEAKER_10: That was like I was there, I was like, Yeah, they both suck.
- 30:08SPEAKER_10: Woo-hoo! But if I can't be happy, neither can you.
- 30:13SPEAKER_10: Yeah, for real.
- 30:14SPEAKER_10: Tristan, I'll let you say your piece, but uh, I mean, the difference is one Taj Brooks, you don't have him for the Washington State game.
- 30:21SPEAKER_10: Your offense looks terrible the entire time.
- 30:23SPEAKER_10: He is the guy that makes this offense go.
- 30:26SPEAKER_10: I mean, no no matter how you look at it, his production is key on winning football games for Texas Tech.
- 30:34SPEAKER_11: Knees and ankles for guy.
- 30:41SPEAKER_10: But that and the defense was just really young.
- 30:45SPEAKER_10: I mean, we had I think eight, seven guys maybe uh starting in that Abilene Christian game on defense that had never started a college football game before.
- 30:55SPEAKER_10: Um, so and it was a wake-up call.
- 30:57SPEAKER_10: I mean, I I think DeRuder's done a really good job on the defensive side fixing things.
- 31:02SPEAKER_10: Now, we haven't been consistent on either side of the ball throughout the entire year.
- 31:05SPEAKER_10: It's honestly astounding that we're five and one with how inconsistent we've been, but he's figured out to get get us a little better every every single week.
- 31:15SPEAKER_10: And so I don't know.
- 31:17SPEAKER_10: We'll we'll I this Baylor game is going to teach us a lot about who Texas Tech is and what Texas Tech is about.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, it uh just to just answer Zelda's question about you know where we're at.
- 31:27SPEAKER_04: It just it seems that Joe McGuire has slow as molasses starts to the season.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, because I'm sure I'm sure there was some giggling happened in the in the likes of Waco and Fort Worth uh whenever it came to the Wyoming game last year as well, um, where we, you know, for whatever bizarre mentally unwell reason, we started our football season in Laramie, Wyoming.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: Um, so I don't that's just that's not only that's a uh a game where you want to go as a uh P5 team to kick things off, but um Maybe this year.
- 32:02SPEAKER_04: This year would have been great.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, this year would have been great.
- 32:04SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 32:04SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, I forgot it.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Uh but that's they they they really had a second.
- 32:09SPEAKER_04: But um, but yeah, Joey Steam's had a he's like slow and lasted starts.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: And Steven's right, the uh the fan base was really starting to like swallow some sour pills for a moment there, um, especially after the Washington State game.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: And I mean, I it's hard not to say I'm not I wasn't guilty of that as well, because there's you know, as y'all stated with year five, with y'all, with us, I feel like it's even more important year with year three.
- 32:31SPEAKER_04: So, because this is whenever we really start seeing Joey's guys get into the system.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: We start seeing some guys have some years under DeRuder and Kitley, and it looked like things were about to be but ugly again.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: You know, not again, but like uh, you know, it's decent for the past couple years, but it was about to be ugly.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: And thank God we we pulled ourselves out of that uh weird, slow, quicksand start.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, things look a lot better.
- 32:56SPEAKER_10: And and one thing Joey McGuire has done since he's arrived at Texas Tech is he's gotten better as the season's gone on.
- 33:02SPEAKER_10: We talked about that when we hopped on Y'all's spot earlier this year when we were breaking down the schedule.
- 33:06SPEAKER_10: And honestly, I it's night and day from that first game of the season to the last game of the season.
- 33:12SPEAKER_10: He just finds a way, despite whatever your team has has gone through.
- 33:18SPEAKER_10: I mean, we started one and three last year.
- 33:20SPEAKER_10: We ended up, you know, with a uh over 500 Big 12 record, um, to make a pretty decent bowl game.
- 33:26SPEAKER_10: But he he just knows how to keep guys together and overcome things, and uh that's uh I've been really impressed these last several uh several weeks with his coaching.
- 33:39SPEAKER_11: But well, all I know is that you guys adore winning one possession games.
- 33:47SPEAKER_10: I I adore winning football games.
- 33:49SPEAKER_11: Baylor, Baylor adores losing one possession games.
- 33:54SPEAKER_11: It's like you know, it's it's our two things.
- 33:56SPEAKER_11: So that means inevitably what's gonna happen in this one is that Baylor wins by three touchdowns.
- 34:01SPEAKER_07: Excuse me.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: You know, it's funny.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: I keep telling Steven with this game, and uh, it's just like you know, Baylor's not dead yet.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: Because every time I feel like I turn on the TV, it's not like like you like you just said, it's not like y'all are getting just stomped through the mud.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: You know, those guys are still playing football, and some of it seems pretty competent for the most part.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: And and you know, Baron Morton has only thrown two picks this year.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: I think it's time to catch him up, you know.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, this this game worries me probably more than it should.
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Like, and to be honest with you guys, uh that that scares me.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: No, I need you to be just like irrational about I don't feel that good about it.
- 34:42SPEAKER_04: And it's just because you know what?
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: I unfortunately for y'all, I really want this game to be for Texas Tech fans and for the program to be our first drubbing of the year.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Uh like like put a Big 12 team into a locker and prove that you are as good as your record is indicating you may be.
- 35:02SPEAKER_04: It's kind of the way I'm seeing it.
- 35:04SPEAKER_08: We scored like 52 on like North Texas in the first half.
- 35:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, that's that's true.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: We're talking about our first drubbing of the year.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: I understand the rivals from Denton came in looking for something hot and we served them something cold, but I this is a different scenario, a better team, I'm sure, coming out of Waco.
- 35:22SPEAKER_10: Yeah, and it's an in-texas in-state rival.
- 35:25SPEAKER_10: I mean, you just you if if you can finally put it all together and your offense plays the way it's looked in like the North Texas game and the Cincinnati game and the even the ACU game, your offense was awesome.
- 35:38SPEAKER_10: If your defense looks like they did against both the Arizona schools, I mean that's a damn good football team.
- 35:44SPEAKER_10: They just haven't done it.
- 35:45SPEAKER_10: Um, so we're hoping back at home in Lubbock, uh, that it all comes together uh against the Baylor Bears.
- 35:53SPEAKER_10: But uh, I am pretty scared.
- 35:55SPEAKER_10: I ain't gonna lie to you.
- 35:56SPEAKER_10: I like I am frustrated when I'm seeing uh Parker stats of war come out and say we're 88% chance we're gonna win this game.
- 36:05SPEAKER_10: I'm like, fuck.
- 36:07SPEAKER_04: Well, don't don't even gotta put an E on this episode.
- 36:10SPEAKER_11: I'm I'm just I'm glad you're realistic because I mean we're terrible against the run, and we know you guys can't run the football.
- 36:16SPEAKER_11: I mean, who do you not even a little bit?
- 36:18SPEAKER_11: Um where we don't force turnovers.
- 36:22SPEAKER_11: Um, our special teams is terrible.
- 36:24SPEAKER_11: So I mean, what you should be afraid, you know?
- 36:27SPEAKER_08: But Dave Arend is undefeated in Lovick, so that's true, that's true.
- 36:32SPEAKER_10: This game is in Waco where Joey's undefeated.
- 36:36SPEAKER_08: So I can't tell you how happy I was when they dropped the time and it was like 3 p.m.
- 36:40SPEAKER_08: and not like six or seven p.m.
- 36:42SPEAKER_08: I was like, thank god.
- 36:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's not all day of tech fans getting riled up to throw fucking tortillas.
- 36:50SPEAKER_08: See, I can say it now because he said it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_08: Tortillas.
- 36:54SPEAKER_11: I think somebody in like the uh in the uh the Oso Media Group Discord was like uh was asking like what the odds were that David Rando would get hit in the face with a tortilla.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: I want to see that though.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: I want to I want to see what we all do.
- 37:09SPEAKER_04: Let's see if he just land like exactly.
- 37:13SPEAKER_11: He's got he's got a very, very symmetrically round bald head, and I bet you could get one if you got it at the right angle where it would just stick.
- 37:22SPEAKER_08: And you have to like frisbee it pretty good.
- 37:24SPEAKER_11: Yeah, it do it before he puts the headset on.
- 37:27SPEAKER_11: Maybe he doesn't feel it, and then he puts the headset, and then he's tortilla head for the whole thing.
- 37:30SPEAKER_10: Well, see, it would it would be even better because you bite a hole in the middle of the tortilla to make it fly.
- 37:35SPEAKER_10: That apparently physics that's how it works.
- 37:38SPEAKER_10: Yeah, uh, but if you just land it right on Dave's head, you know, you have that little hole where you bit out, and then it's just sun, that's it.
- 37:45SPEAKER_10: And then the rest of it, that's what we need to have.
- 37:48SPEAKER_11: This is the kind of learnings you get from Texas Technical University.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I like how you I like how y'all are happy that it's not a night game, you know, for you know the rowdiness of the fans.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: But I'm just happy that Steve and I don't have to sit here wait till 10 p.m.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: to watch our football team play a game.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 38:06SPEAKER_10: When we're yeah, I mean, I don't know what time y'all's Utah game was or what time the I was during the day.
- 38:11SPEAKER_10: Oh 2 30 p.m.
- 38:12SPEAKER_11: We did have we did have that night BYU game two years ago that kicked off at nine, I think.
- 38:18SPEAKER_10: Yeah, we had a 10 p.m.
- 38:20SPEAKER_10: central time kickoff in the Arizona one.
- 38:22SPEAKER_10: I don't think I would watch that.
- 38:23SPEAKER_11: It's funny that you guys have just been lumped in with like, oh yeah, they're West Texas, so they that must be an outside, right?
- 38:32SPEAKER_08: They're Baylor said that their fan base is in Dallas, they'll be fine.
- 38:36SPEAKER_08: I swear to god, if Baylor had a 10 p.m.
- 38:38SPEAKER_08: kickoff, I would just watch it the next day.
- 38:40SPEAKER_08: I'm not staying up to watch that.
- 38:42SPEAKER_10: The worst of it was Washington State.
- 38:44SPEAKER_10: Washington State was a 9 p.m.
- 38:46SPEAKER_10: Central Time kickoff, and then they just completely shit the bed the entire time.
- 38:50SPEAKER_10: And so we're up until 1:30 in the morning, just sad, drunken sad.
- 38:55SPEAKER_10: It was the worst.
- 38:57SPEAKER_11: Uh Matt, I have bad news for you because I believe our Gonzaga game uh on the first day of basketball season is a 10:30.
- 39:04SPEAKER_08: I saw that.
- 39:05SPEAKER_08: Not watching it.
- 39:06SPEAKER_08: Oh my gosh.
- 39:07SPEAKER_11: It's the last game of the evening.
- 39:09SPEAKER_11: Baylor Gonzaga.
- 39:10SPEAKER_11: Top 10 matchup at 10 30 after Monday Night Football.
- 39:13SPEAKER_11: They're gonna have yeah, yeah.
- 39:14SPEAKER_11: It's it's 11:30 Eastern time coming on after Monday Night Football.
- 39:18SPEAKER_10: Well, Matt, luckily you don't have to watch NFL anymore.
- 39:20SPEAKER_10: I mean, it's just they haven't completely just shut shut you out of the cow, the cowboys.
- 39:25SPEAKER_10: Oh, yeah, no, I'm actively rooting against him.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: I'm completely like Yeah, we can finally agree on some NFL football.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: I'm rooting against him too.
- 39:35SPEAKER_08: Jerry Jones has like see my text message, message agreement with my other cowboys fans.
- 39:41SPEAKER_08: It's like can you invite me?
- 39:44SPEAKER_11: I swear I will never say anything.
- 39:46SPEAKER_11: I just want to read what y'all say.
- 39:48SPEAKER_10: Threatening, threatening radio show hosts, uh, you know, just doing the your classic Jerry, Jerry Jones moves.
- 39:55SPEAKER_11: Steven, if you if you talk badly about Baylor, I can have you replaced.
- 39:58SPEAKER_11: I'll get I'll take these questions from somebody else.
- 40:02SPEAKER_10: I will have somebody else walk in here and ask me these questions.
- 40:06unknown: Oh my god.
- 40:08SPEAKER_10: Oh, well, boys, we're gonna end off with some predictions.
- 40:12SPEAKER_10: Okay, okay, because this is what this is.
- 40:15SPEAKER_10: It's butt bowl week.
- 40:16SPEAKER_10: I know you guys are a little down bad right now, and we're kind of riding high.
- 40:20SPEAKER_10: We're hoping that, well, me and Tristan are hoping that it's cautiously high.
- 40:23SPEAKER_10: Cautiously high.
- 40:24SPEAKER_10: We're still not ranked yet.
- 40:26SPEAKER_10: Still got that chip on our shoulder.
- 40:27SPEAKER_08: I've been cautiously high before.
- 40:31SPEAKER_08: It's a time.
- 40:32SPEAKER_10: We'll start, we'll start with Matt.
- 40:34SPEAKER_10: We'll go to Tristan, we'll go to Joe, and then we'll finish off with me just to get a little variety in here.
- 40:39SPEAKER_10: Matt, what do you think this game is gonna be?
- 40:42SPEAKER_08: I think it's gonna look similar to the Cincinnati game, where I think it's gonna be uh offensive are gonna kind of be the show.
- 40:51SPEAKER_08: And then I have a Texas Tech win 38-31.
- 40:58SPEAKER_08: That's where that's where I'm landing on.
- 41:01SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 41:02SPEAKER_08: Christy.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Um I I'm I'm in a fairly similar vein.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: I I just give thanks that it's at home and that where Joey Maguire is very comfortable.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: Um, Baylor is in a tight spot, so I don't that should make me happier or sadder going into this game.
- 41:18SPEAKER_04: Um, but I am with Joe, and while I want a uh not Joe, Matt.
- 41:23SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Matt.
- 41:24SPEAKER_08: Um Joe is is he speaking to you telepathically right now?
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Joe Joe just sent me a text.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm with Matt, and uh I I think it's gonna be very close.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: And I think uh both teams are going to be at minimum in their 30s, and it's gonna be a one-score game.
- 41:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't think we're gonna drub anybody this season.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: I think every time it's just gonna be Joey Oguire finds a way to win.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: It's nothing, nothing we're gonna, you know, ring lots of bells about besides the victory ones.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: We're just gonna get it done.
- 41:56SPEAKER_10: There you go.
- 41:56SPEAKER_10: Joe.
- 41:57SPEAKER_11: All right, Matt, and I I have a I have a similar score to you, but I have less uh one less touchdown for for one of the teams.
- 42:06SPEAKER_11: But I'm going I have tech winning 38-24.
- 42:11SPEAKER_10: Okay.
- 42:12SPEAKER_10: Uh I hate doing this because I hate it when everybody chooses uh the team, the same team that's gonna win.
- 42:18SPEAKER_10: Um I I've gone back and forth with this.
- 42:22SPEAKER_10: I actually I think this team is good.
- 42:24SPEAKER_10: I think this Texas Tech team is actually good.
- 42:27SPEAKER_10: I don't think they put it all together, but I think this team is good.
- 42:30SPEAKER_10: And I think at home, I think I'm cautious to say this because what I truly believe and what I what my fandom is telling me not to believe is that Texas Tech is gonna win 42 to 21 uh and just win by, you know, actually get that first legit big win against a Baylor team that may or may not be still playing for their head coach.
- 42:56SPEAKER_10: Um and uh yeah, I I expect it's gonna be it's gonna be good vibes in Lubbock after this one.
- 43:02SPEAKER_11: It wouldn't surprise me.
- 43:04SPEAKER_08: Well, I'm not gonna surprise one of you.
- 43:07SPEAKER_08: Unfortunately, this means that Baylor's gonna win.
- 43:09SPEAKER_10: So yeah, of course.
- 43:11SPEAKER_10: Congratulations to you guys on the big victory on Saturday.
- 43:15SPEAKER_10: Uh but really appreciate you guys coming on as we do here on the Can I ask one last burning question?
- 43:23SPEAKER_10: Go ahead.
- 43:24SPEAKER_11: Burn me.
- 43:25SPEAKER_04: So my my my wife's favorite topic to talk about when we're on we're watching college sports is the team's colors and uniforms.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: And our big burning question for you today is so y'all transitioned to this bright green and bright yellow combo.
- 43:41SPEAKER_04: And I think it looks good.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: Do y'all miss the forest green and gold?
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: Every day.
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: Every day.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: That was quick.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: That was like without even that was without even uh hesitation.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, every day.
- 43:54SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 43:55SPEAKER_08: First I was I was I was in on it, but again, we were like when they you know First premiered, it was like 2019, 11 and 1.
- 44:04SPEAKER_08: We were 2021.
- 44:06SPEAKER_08: Since then, I've been like, I hate the uniform.
- 44:11SPEAKER_10: This this West Virginia ass yellow.
- 44:14SPEAKER_11: And this Yeah, for me, it's always it's just it always felt like with like I'll just say his name.
- 44:20SPEAKER_11: He's not Voldemort, whatever.
- 44:22SPEAKER_11: Uh with the when they were leaving the Bryals era, I've always felt like there was like a a hip, a cool, like more of a wild factor and an out there thing than Baylor was normally used to when he was around.
- 44:38SPEAKER_11: And and then he came in and and brought that flash.
- 44:42SPEAKER_11: And then when he was ejected, I think there was like a mindset within the administration to be like, okay, we have to separate ourselves.
- 44:50SPEAKER_11: So it's like we're gonna course correct into bland.
- 44:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 44:55SPEAKER_11: Then they want to do that, like you know, be universal across the team had all of our sports programs had different things.
- 45:04SPEAKER_11: That's insanity.
- 45:05SPEAKER_10: Like different goals, different basketball had a great thing going on for a while.
- 45:09SPEAKER_11: Highlighter, dude.
- 45:10SPEAKER_11: So there was a while where this is what's really crazy.
- 45:14SPEAKER_11: Before we before we did this new Nike deal, football was Nike, basketball was Adidas, and baseball and softball were under armor.
- 45:23SPEAKER_10: That's insane.
- 45:25SPEAKER_10: That's insane to have all that.
- 45:29SPEAKER_10: No thank you.
- 45:30SPEAKER_10: Uh yeah, I I'm I'm pro for you guys' sake.
- 45:35SPEAKER_10: Bring back the old Baylor colors.
- 45:37SPEAKER_08: I mean, I do like the anthrosat that we introduced this year, the the gray and the dark or dark gray.
- 45:44SPEAKER_08: That looks the best, but it's also a throwback because it has some accents that are similar to the those last uniforms under under brows.
- 45:52SPEAKER_11: Speaking of this, be on the lookout for the Oklahoma State game.
- 45:56SPEAKER_11: Because they announced every single uniform combo we were gonna wear this year at the beginning of the year.
- 46:03SPEAKER_11: And the or or sorry, the TCU, TCU, TCU game.
- 46:07SPEAKER_11: Except for the TCU game, on the announcement, it was just the eyeball emoji for that game.
- 46:12SPEAKER_11: And they are honoring the 2013 and 2014 Big 12 championship teams.
- 46:17SPEAKER_11: So it would not surprise me in the least if they if they pulled those out of the closet.
- 46:20SPEAKER_11: Pull them out of the closet.
- 46:22SPEAKER_09: Okay, okay.
- 46:23SPEAKER_09: Well, get a little excitement, you know, on a on a half.
- 46:27SPEAKER_09: That may be the only thing we have to look at.
- 46:28SPEAKER_02: There'll be dozens of us there.
- 46:31SPEAKER_08: There will be tens of us, it will be nuts.
- 46:33SPEAKER_08: Get in price on that one.
- 46:35SPEAKER_08: Will be get yourself on SeatGeek or Stub Hub or whatever.
- 46:39SPEAKER_11: Come to the game and get a free hot dog.
- 46:41SPEAKER_11: That's the price.
- 46:42SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 46:42SPEAKER_10: Dollar beer night.
- 46:43SPEAKER_10: Bust that one out.
- 46:44SPEAKER_10: Oh, wait.
- 46:46SPEAKER_10: Bring five cans of food and you can get in.
- 46:50SPEAKER_10: But are we are they still doing box stops?
- 46:52SPEAKER_10: Do box stops.
- 46:54SPEAKER_04: Box stops for education, baby.
- 46:56SPEAKER_04: You know, speaking of that before it work school, I feel like TCU and y'all kind of pulled the same silly mistake.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: They kind of cut they're fucking copying us, man.
- 47:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I agree.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: But my my thing is it's like, you know, TCU had this uh growing iconic thing going with their like lizard collar on the uniform.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: Like you're starting to expect that every time they came on the field.
- 47:18SPEAKER_04: I thought it was kind of cool.
- 47:19SPEAKER_04: And with y'all, it was the bear claws on the pelvis.
- 47:22SPEAKER_11: Thank you.
- 47:22SPEAKER_11: Yes, the bear claws on the shoulders.
- 47:24SPEAKER_04: It was like an iconic thing, like growing there for a while.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: And I just feel like it was the anthracite.
- 47:31SPEAKER_04: Okay, good.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: Good.
- 47:32SPEAKER_11: Yeah, then the new anthrocyte jerseys that we have, they it's a it's a darker, so they're like dark gray, and then there's like a darker, slight shade of the bear claw on the shoulder.
- 47:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I like the stripes better than the what we had before with nothing.
- 47:45SPEAKER_08: But when you see the anthrocyte, which is the same uniform template, just with some extra accents with bear claws.
- 47:51SPEAKER_08: I was like, you could have done this for every uniform.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 47:54SPEAKER_08: Could have just done this.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: Like be a little more fun with it.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: This is not the NFL, you know.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: Like you don't have to go super basic and like well, I didn't even look at the internet.
- 48:04SPEAKER_11: Like the Texans have a cooler uniform now than like yeah, yeah.
- 48:10SPEAKER_10: Tristan, and you're not gonna convince me that Mahomes are mix and match.
- 48:13SPEAKER_08: That's what my main thing is.
- 48:14SPEAKER_08: We don't always have to be monochrome.
- 48:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:17SPEAKER_04: Well, it's just you know, I I'm not not to rip on our programs, but it's it's not like you know, we're we're we're we're Michigan where you have to like marry yourself to one simple scheme.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: Like you get fun with this, and I don't want to be Texas.
- 48:31SPEAKER_04: I don't want to use that example, so thank you, Joe, for uh being that guy.
- 48:36SPEAKER_04: So go dogs, baby.
- 48:38SPEAKER_11: But because that's one thing that annoys me is when people are like, well, I I'll see those arguments where it's like what's the what's the best uniform in college football?
- 48:44SPEAKER_11: And I know people that are like, oh, Texas.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, don't this is not, it's just not the best uniform in college football.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Or I guess not.
- 48:51SPEAKER_10: I do think it's kind of funny that Kansas State just doesn't change at all, and they're not that program, like they're not the Penn State, but they're just that's always boiled down to they never had the money to buy anything else for yeah, yeah.
- 49:05SPEAKER_11: Iowa State needs to bring back the dog bones.
- 49:07SPEAKER_11: Do y'all remember those?
- 49:08SPEAKER_11: When they had the the collar with the collar was uh it was the block I, but when it goes around a collar, it's sideways, so it looked like they had dog bones all around their collar.
- 49:19SPEAKER_11: I do not remember that.
- 49:20SPEAKER_11: Yeah, go look up look up Iowa State dog bone collar, and like it's it's literally the letter I, but it looks like dog bones all the way down.
- 49:26SPEAKER_10: Oh my god, they're like some of that from like the early like 2000.
- 49:31SPEAKER_10: Like the late Big Eight era.
- 49:32SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:33SPEAKER_09: Oh my god, dude.
- 49:35SPEAKER_10: Some brutal uniforms.
- 49:37SPEAKER_10: But all right, fellas, we've appreciated the conversation.
- 49:40SPEAKER_10: Uh Baylor Texas Tech coming up this week, uh, 3 p.m.
- 49:45SPEAKER_10: We're gonna finish off like we always do on the talk and tech pod with some songs of the week for the people to go listen to.
- 49:50SPEAKER_10: Hopefully, uh it'll be a lot of sad Baylor fans after this game this weekend going to just jam.
- 49:56SPEAKER_10: Maybe it's some happy Texas Tech fans looking for a jam.
- 49:59SPEAKER_10: But we're doing a song of the week.
- 50:01SPEAKER_10: Again, I will say we'll go Matt, Tristan, Joe, finish off with yours truly.
- 50:05SPEAKER_10: So, Matt, what's your song of the week?
- 50:08SPEAKER_08: Well, mine, um, it is topical uh today.
- 50:12SPEAKER_08: Liam Payne, form of resurrection.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: I was gonna do all right, we're the same, we're the same boat.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: Rest in peace with your eulogy.
- 50:19SPEAKER_08: Rest in peace.
- 50:19SPEAKER_08: So I'm gonna go with strip that down, featuring Quavo by Liam Payne.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Your hands on my body and swing that round for me.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: Swaby.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: You know I love it when the music's life but come and strip that down for me.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_11: Is it bad?
- 50:34SPEAKER_11: I didn't know who that was.
- 50:37SPEAKER_10: A touching tribute for a big one direction fan, Matt.
- 50:41SPEAKER_10: Uh I have two teenage daughters.
- 50:43SPEAKER_10: So yeah, no, you get it.
- 50:45SPEAKER_10: It was tough.
- 50:45SPEAKER_10: It was tough.
- 50:46SPEAKER_11: I was expecting yours to be Chapel Rowan, Matt.
- 50:50SPEAKER_10: That's every day.
- 50:51SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 50:52SPEAKER_10: He's he's like, I can't do Pink Pony Club again.
- 50:55SPEAKER_10: I'm not gonna do that.
- 50:57SPEAKER_10: All right, Tristan, go ahead.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: All right, I'm gonna do uh I'm also gonna stick with uh Matt there.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: I feel like you gotta give some love to the probably the biggest boy band of Stephen and I's time.
- 51:07SPEAKER_04: Um so I'm gonna go with uh You Don't Know Your Beautiful by One Direction.
- 51:18SPEAKER_11: You don't know uh oh you don't know your beautiful now that's a banger.
- 51:24SPEAKER_11: That's that's what I'm saying.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's yeah, we're all gonna be we're all gonna be like it's it's gonna be stuck in.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: I don't even have to hear it, it's already stuck in my head.
- 51:36SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 51:37SPEAKER_10: Great choice, great choice.
- 51:38SPEAKER_10: Joe, go ahead.
- 51:39SPEAKER_11: All right, so I decided.
- 51:40SPEAKER_11: So my first time ever, I did blue by Eiffel 65 on the show because I wanted to get weird with it.
- 51:45SPEAKER_11: Great.
- 51:46SPEAKER_11: And then like the next few times, like I was like serious, and I like pick like nice, like wonderful country songs that I really like.
- 51:51SPEAKER_11: I'm going weird again because that's the only way I'm gonna survive this football season is getting weird.
- 51:55SPEAKER_11: So let's go, let's get crazy, and we're gonna go with uh Ratta Tata by Baby Metal and Electric Callboy.
- 52:14SPEAKER_10: Nice.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: Thank you, Joe.
- 52:18SPEAKER_10: Love it, love it.
- 52:19SPEAKER_10: I love that we get to add this now to the playlist.
- 52:22SPEAKER_08: It's great.
- 52:23SPEAKER_08: It's it's I'm just thinking about all the tech fans looking up this band because they don't know.
- 52:29SPEAKER_12: I can yeah, I cannot wait for people in Loving to discover uh to discover baby metal.
- 52:34SPEAKER_10: It's like it's it's it's the great the great part about the song of the week is that we do put this on Spotify.
- 52:41SPEAKER_10: You put the clip in Apple, I always go listen to it.
- 52:43SPEAKER_10: Well, when we put the actual playlist together that's like available for people to listen to on Spotify and Apple music, and we'll just like get weird one week because we've just been doing like good classic country songs or whatever, and then Tristan will bust out like spooky scary skeletons on like if it's a Halloween episode, and it's like this is uh this playlist is out of whack, it's nuts.
- 53:06SPEAKER_10: But all three of you guys did something like that we normally would not listen to, so I cannot put something that I normally listen to like I was going to.
- 53:16SPEAKER_10: So, true to form with Matt and Tristan.
- 53:19SPEAKER_10: I will stick with the one direction vibe, and I will go with what I think is my favorite one direction song, which is Story of My Life.
- 53:39SPEAKER_10: Story of my life, story of my life, my life, man.
- 53:44SPEAKER_10: Uh, it's a beautiful song.
- 53:46SPEAKER_10: We had it on our uh we had a playlist in college called Dude Bro, and it was just disgusting music.
- 53:52SPEAKER_10: Uh I mean it had SpongeBob, it had uh, I think it had some death metal on there at some points, and uh it's just some we drew on when we uh had a few Keystone lights in us, and uh yeah, this uh rest in peace, Liam Payne.
- 54:07SPEAKER_10: Uh but yeah, that's uh these are some wonderful additions to the Song of the Week playlist.
- 54:13SPEAKER_10: Um, fellas, go ahead and plug all your stuff for all of the wonderful Baylor and potentially Texas Tech fans to go and give you guys a listen.
- 54:21SPEAKER_08: Well, you can follow us on Twitter at the Bearedin Pod and the Bearedin Pod.com and follow me at Matt underscore workman.
- 54:32SPEAKER_11: And you can follow me at the underscore Joe underscore goodman with all the underscores in the world there um on Twitter as well.
- 54:40SPEAKER_10: Very nice.
- 54:41SPEAKER_11: Also, check out like uh check out like all the uh the 1012.
- 54:44SPEAKER_11: We're part of the 1012 network.

- 55:02SPEAKER_10: Yeah, get you some merch.
- 55:04SPEAKER_10: I got some iOS 60.
- 55:05SPEAKER_11: It's getting chilly.
- 55:06SPEAKER_11: They got some cool tech jackets, they got excellent tech jackets.
- 55:09SPEAKER_11: I put I believe they have lots of uh leveled bevel stuff.
- 55:13SPEAKER_04: I Joe, I'm very excited for you to just give in to being like, yeah, well, my you know, my wife went went there, so I can um I can throw this.
- 55:22SPEAKER_11: I have told I have told many people because I I I it was was it you or was it uh I can't remember who it was from tech Twitter, but somebody somebody one time told me like they were just like let's just be you should have gone to tech.
- 55:33SPEAKER_11: And so there's gonna be a day where I'm just like you know what, like yeah, I'll just lean into it.
- 55:37SPEAKER_10: Yeah, it needs to happen.
- 55:38SPEAKER_10: It might happen this year.
- 55:39SPEAKER_10: Who knows?
- 55:40SPEAKER_10: Maybe maybe a loss at McClane against TCU just completely just shifts your mindset, and now you're a Texas.
- 55:47SPEAKER_10: Maybe that changes a man.
- 55:49SPEAKER_10: That'll change a man for this shitty TCU too.
- 55:54SPEAKER_11: If we lose to them again, I'm gonna die.
- 55:57SPEAKER_10: Really appreciate it, guys.
- 55:58SPEAKER_10: Y'all have a good one.
- 55:59SPEAKER_11: Later.
- 56:00SPEAKER_11: Dang it.
- 56:01SPEAKER_06: Uh wow.
- 56:02SPEAKER_06: First of all, uh, got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 56:08SPEAKER_06: Uh, their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 56:12SPEAKER_06: This is wild.
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: When I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast, and these guys have been tremendous.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: This is incredible.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
