- 0:07Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia. It's Thursday, October 1st. This is the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills news hit.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing you everything
- 0:19Speaker 1: you need to know before you start your day. Let's
- 0:22Speaker 1: get right into it. Wednesday's initial injury report dropped for
- 0:25Speaker 1: both teams, and there are a couple of big names
- 0:27Speaker 1: to keep an eye on. Starting with the Bills, Christian
- 0:29Speaker 1: Benford didn't practice today with a toe injury, and Keon
- 0:32Speaker 1: Coleman was out with an ankle. Benford is the main
- 0:34Speaker 1: one on the defense, and if he can't go Sunday,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Guys like Igben Nosen and Harrison will have to step
- 0:39Speaker 1: up in the boundary corner spot. Joey Andreessen missed with
- 0:43Speaker 1: the knee, and TJ Sanders was still out sick as
- 0:45Speaker 1: he's recovering from his appendectomy. Now over to New England's side.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez both sat out today with
- 0:52Speaker 1: shoulder injuries, and starting tackle Morgan Moses was out with
- 0:55Speaker 1: a foot. If Barmore and Gonzalez can't suit up, that
- 0:58Speaker 1: defense is missing two of its best players coming into
- 1:00Speaker 1: Orchard Park, something for Bills fans to keep a close
- 1:03Speaker 1: eye on as the week goes on. Reggie Gilliam with
- 1:06Speaker 1: a knee and Draymond Jones with a shoulder both were
- 1:08Speaker 1: listed as questionable. Drake May showed up on the injury report,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but was a full participant with a right shoulder.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Bills transaction. Yesterday, the Bills officially signed defensive tackle Fedarian
- 1:20Speaker 2: Mathis to the practice squad, as expected. He joins Austin
- 1:24Speaker 2: Johnson and international pathway player Travis Clayton as the third
- 1:29Speaker 2: defensive lineman the Bills currently have on the practice squad.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Joe Brady took to the podium on Wednesday ahead of
- 1:35Speaker 1: Sunday's divisional matchup, and here are the biggest takeaways from
- 1:38Speaker 1: his press conference. First up, he immediately shut down internet
- 1:41Speaker 1: speculation regarding Josh Allen's knee following last week's game, shrugging
- 1:45Speaker 1: off the concern with a simple quote, I'm not concerned
- 1:48Speaker 1: about Josh. When asked about slowing down the Patriots' heavy
- 1:52Speaker 1: blitz package, Brady emphasized that it all starts with ball security.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He praised New England's defensive unit, noting how tough they
- 1:58Speaker 1: are to game plan for, especially when facing Josh Allen.
- 2:01Speaker 1: because teams routinely abandon their tendencies on tape and throw
- 2:04Speaker 1: unique looks at him. His message? The offense has to
- 2:07Speaker 1: stay adaptable. As for the early season standings, Brady didn't
- 2:11Speaker 1: hold back when asked about how both teams sit in
- 2:13Speaker 1: the division. He bluntly stated, I don't give a damn
- 2:16Speaker 1: about that. He stressed that success comes down to competitive
- 2:19Speaker 1: stamina and taking the season one week matter. Addressing the
- 2:22Speaker 1: early inconsistency in the run defense, Brady explained that the
- 2:26Speaker 1: group has taken an intentional approach to fixing it. He
- 2:29Speaker 1: made the point of saying he isn't a, quote, stats guy,
- 2:32Speaker 1: cautioning that raw production numbers can be misleading compared to
- 2:35Speaker 1: what shows up on tape, where there's a clear growth
- 2:37Speaker 1: from weeks one to three. He touched on coaching ball security,
- 2:41Speaker 1: detailing how the staff emphasizes specific touch points in practice
- 2:44Speaker 1: to build habits throughout the week. Finally, when asked about
- 2:48Speaker 1: Christian Benford's status, Brady distanced himself from past regimes and
- 2:52Speaker 1: how he manages the injury report. He made it clear
- 2:55Speaker 1: that a missed practice doesn't rule out a player for Sunday.
- 2:58Speaker 1: as you could see with Keon Coleman and DJ Moore
- 3:00Speaker 1: last week. Several Bills players spoke to the media, including
- 3:05Speaker 1: QB1 Josh Allen. Allen was asked about how he prepares
- 3:08Speaker 1: for a team that blitzes a lot like the Patriots do.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He said that they make life extremely hard for you,
- 3:14Speaker 1: given their different blitz looks, especially on third down. He
- 3:17Speaker 1: was asked if he likes when defenses blitz and explained
- 3:20Speaker 1: that it does open up more space for his receivers
- 3:22Speaker 1: to get open. But if you're not tuned in to
- 3:24Speaker 1: what's going on, if you slide the offensive line the
- 3:26Speaker 1: wrong way, and you get pressure right away, that's not
- 3:29Speaker 1: fun for any quarterback in the league. On Drake May's
- 3:33Speaker 1: recent struggles, Allen commented that he's confident in the quarterback's
- 3:36Speaker 1: ability to get back on track. He called May a
- 3:39Speaker 1: smart kid and extremely talented and believes he'll figure it
- 3:42Speaker 1: out and will find a way to get out of
- 3:43Speaker 1: this slump. Allen mentioned that his tush-push QB sneaks aren't
- 3:47Speaker 1: all that glamorous, since they allowed a defense to get
- 3:50Speaker 1: some nice little hits on you. He said that if
- 3:52Speaker 1: he's going to be able to play for as long
- 3:54Speaker 1: as he wants to play, he knows he needs to
- 3:56Speaker 1: limit those hits. which is something he concedes he hasn't
- 3:59Speaker 1: done a great job of to start the year. Allen
- 4:02Speaker 1: shared his insight on what taking those hits means for
- 4:05Speaker 1: his physical condition, saying that at this point, he associates
- 4:09Speaker 1: the game of football with a little bit of pain.
- 4:12Speaker 1: His high school coach used to say that you've got
- 4:14Speaker 1: to be a little sick to love this game, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: Allen guesses that means he is a little sick because
- 4:19Speaker 1: he loves football. Tight end Dawson Knox also spoke to
- 4:23Speaker 1: the media, highlighting the complexity of an ugly win in
- 4:26Speaker 1: the NFL. It still goes down in the win column,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but they can't let the results confuse the process. Just
- 4:33Speaker 1: because they won, they can't brush aside the mistakes that
- 4:35Speaker 1: were made in that game. He believes it's.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Important to learn from those errors, especially when it comes
- 4:40Speaker 2: to taking care of the football. He believes ball security
- 4:44Speaker 2: is equally a mental and physical challenge, participating in drills
- 4:47Speaker 2: during practice, but also having the right state of mind
- 4:50Speaker 2: to have the small details locked in. Right tackle Spencer
- 4:54Speaker 2: Brown was asked about Allen's ability to bounce back from
- 4:57Speaker 2: poor performances. He explained that Allen doesn't change anything in practice. Instead,
- 5:02Speaker 2: he stays the course and purges the memories from last
- 5:05Speaker 2: week's game, regardless of the result. Brown called Mike Vrabel's
- 5:09Speaker 2: defense aggressive and fundamentally sound, and he's ready for the
- 5:13Speaker 2: challenge they pose. Wide receiver Kelo Shakir was asked about
- 5:17Speaker 2: how much he thinks about the fact that the Bills
- 5:19Speaker 2: are 3-0 and the Patriots are 1-2, entering their Week
- 5:23Speaker 2: 4 matchup. The receiver said that he hasn't thought about
- 5:26Speaker 2: it much, since the team is good at approaching every
- 5:28Speaker 2: week the same. Instead, the team is more focused on
- 5:31Speaker 2: fixing their own mistakes rather than looking at the mistakes
- 5:34Speaker 2: New England has made. Shakir believes this is one of
- 5:37Speaker 2: the more well-rounded defenses the team will face this season.
- 5:40Speaker 2: He specifically cited their chemistry and talent in the secondary.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Bradley Chubb doesn't approach division games any differently, but acknowledge
- 5:49Speaker 2: that the game feels a little different. Despite the quarterback's struggles,
- 5:53Speaker 2: Chubbs still views Drake May as the MVP finalist and
- 5:56Speaker 2: Super Bowl runner-up from last year, given what he knows
- 5:59Speaker 2: that the quarterback is capable of doing. The addresser knew
- 6:02Speaker 2: when he first got here that he was going to
- 6:04Speaker 2: have a big impact on the others in the room,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and vice versa, which is why he made it a
- 6:09Speaker 2: point to get close to guys like Greg Rousseau, Javon Solomon,
- 6:12Speaker 2: TJ Parker, Michael Hoyt, and Mike Dana. He sees Rousseau
- 6:16Speaker 2: playing free and being a dog in every phase of
- 6:19Speaker 2: the game, both defending the run and the pass. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: speaking of Greg Rousseau, he said that he notices that
- 6:25Speaker 2: opposing offenses are playing him a little differently thanks to
- 6:28Speaker 2: his success to start the year, but teams are still
- 6:31Speaker 2: doing their things regardless of what type of defense they're
- 6:34Speaker 2: playing against. Time for On This Day in Bills History,
- 6:38Speaker 2: and with it being Patriots Week, I've got a great
- 6:39Speaker 2: one for you from October 1st, 1989. This rivalry has
- 6:43Speaker 2: produced some wild moments over the decades. but this was
- 6:46Speaker 2: just a straight-up old-school beatdown. Buffalo welcomed New England into
- 6:50Speaker 2: Ridge Stadium and rolled them 31-10. If you want to
- 6:53Speaker 2: pinpoint the exact afternoon that Thurman Thomas turned into a superstar,
- 6:57Speaker 2: this was it for sure.
- 6:59Speaker 1: For the very first time in his career, Thurman put
- 7:01Speaker 1: up over 200 total yards from scrimmage, racking up 105
- 7:04Speaker 1: on the ground and another 99 in the air, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: scoring twice. Jim Kelly was in complete control, throwing for
- 7:11Speaker 1: nearly 300 yards and three scores, and making New England's
- 7:14Speaker 1: defense look lost all afternoon. It's always good to look
- 7:18Speaker 1: back on a beatdown of a division rival as we
- 7:20Speaker 1: get ready for another chapter with New England coming to
- 7:22Speaker 1: town this week.
- 7:24Speaker 2: If you missed the show last night, catch Greg Thompson
