Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 101. My Thunderbolts* Review!
Transcript
- 0:20Hi guys, it's Megan with vigilante vibes and today I am
- 0:24here to give my review on Thunderbolts.
- 0:27I just got back from the theater just a little bit ago and I'm
- 0:32still reeling from the movie. I have so, so many thoughts and
- 0:38it exceeded every single one of my expectations.
- 0:42It was a beautifully done movie. My gosh, I just.
- 0:52If you've seen the movie, then you know how primarily the topic
- 0:59of mental illnesses in the movie and I see you Marvel, you made
- 1:05this movie come out in May and May is mental health awareness
- 1:08month. So love that so much happened in
- 1:15the movie. I'm still trying to get my
- 1:17thoughts together. It was all so, so beautiful
- 1:20starting all the way from the beginning with the new Marvel
- 1:24logo. That was all comic books.
- 1:26It was all Marvel Comics. Usually it shows the MCU heroes
- 1:29or the MCU past movies, all comic books, and then it turns
- 1:34to Pitch Black for The Void. They handled The Void and
- 1:43Century so perfectly. I was really, really worried
- 1:47about it because Century is such an overpowered hero and I always
- 1:52think that the MCU just isn't able to handle overpowered
- 1:57heroes. It's just too much for them.
- 1:59But this was beautifully done. This The void was terrifying and
- 2:08made your spine curl and it not curl it made it was spine
- 2:13chilling. Is that the how you say it?
- 2:15I don't know, but it was unhinged.
- 2:20It was as it is in the comics. How the void is in the comics
- 2:23and I love how Lewis Pullman handled it.
- 2:27I love how he handled Bob being Century and all that was
- 2:33amazing. Alexi was the perfect humor for
- 2:38this movie. Absolutely phenomenal.
- 2:41He worked off so well with every character.
- 2:44I mean, you can't go wrong with David Harbour, but I'm sorry,
- 2:47this is really shiny. I even zoomed in my camera so it
- 2:50wouldn't make that big of a deal, but I'm so sorry.
- 2:55Whatever Alexa was perfect, phenomenal Yelena Yelena that I
- 3:09don't even know how to go into how incredible Florence P was in
- 3:13this movie. She handled Yelena's trauma,
- 3:19Yelena's feelings, her emotions, her her taking on others
- 3:23emotions and being able to give her opinion and give I don't
- 3:30know how to describe it but like it was just that was one of the
- 3:35best performances of MCU. You could see that Florence Pugh
- 3:39put her entire soul into it and I love her for that.
- 3:43Also, I'm pretty sure my sexuality, my preference, I'm a
- 3:49straight woman, but I'm pretty sure now it's preferences is
- 3:54men. And Yelena Blova, there's no
- 3:59other way to say it. She has changed me as a person.
- 4:05But going back to it all, I like how Bucky wasn't the center of
- 4:09attention. I thought he would be because
- 4:11it's Bucky. Like he's been in nine MCU
- 4:16projects. 99 is a huge number. I like how he was more part of
- 4:21the team rather than the main focus.
- 4:24The main focus was the team, but it was more told from Elena's
- 4:27perspective, which it should have been.
- 4:29They handled that great. I love that that's where it came
- 4:33from. I do wish we would have gotten
- 4:36more time with Ghost, working with each character and kind of
- 4:41taking the lead on some things towards the beginning when she's
- 4:44going to bat for these motherfuckers she doesn't even
- 4:48know. I really like that it showed a
- 4:51different side of her and it showed that she was the first
- 4:54one to work as on the team. Taskmaster.
- 5:02I just want to say that I finally got a theory right that
- 5:06Taskmaster would have been taken out right at the beginning, Loki
- 5:10and Infinity War style so quick. And it was Ghost to do it.
- 5:16That's go for, go Ghost. I did like that Yelena showed
- 5:23compassion for Taskmaster. She said, yeah, I knew her.
- 5:27She did a lot of bad things in her life.
- 5:30She's trying to get better, but now she's dead.
- 5:32And that's probably going to be all of us pretty soon.
- 5:34So that was a very, very, very real.
- 5:40The one thing I will say about this movie is that I think it'll
- 5:43make people look back at the Black Widow movie more fondly,
- 5:49with more appreciation. I think for Alexi, who's Red
- 5:54Guardian, Yelena, maybe even Taskmaster, probably not.
- 6:00But for those two, for sure, absolutely.
- 6:03Because I watched Black Widow last night.
- 6:05I love that movie. I I love it.
- 6:08I've always liked it. I just think it was pushed out
- 6:11at the exact wrong time because why?
- 6:13Why would I want to watch a Black Widow movie?
- 6:16But when Black Widow's dead, it was definitely used to introduce
- 6:20Jelena and Alexi, which like, I love those two characters so
- 6:26fine, but I wish I would have came out right earlier.
- 6:28I didn't feel like I have very much weight to it because I
- 6:32mean, Natasha wasn't going to die in the movie, so it's like
- 6:35no matter what happens, she'll be fine.
- 6:38I'm getting off track here, but I think people will look back on
- 6:41that movie and enjoy it a lot more.
- 6:47I liked everything that happened in the movie.
- 6:51There are a few things that I would have changed, like little,
- 6:53little tiny things. Like I think it was very
- 6:56predictable, but I don't think that's always a bad thing when
- 7:00it when it's as hard hitting as it was like when the big like in
- 7:07climatic event that happens in every action movie, but this one
- 7:12was it was Bob century fighting void, the void, and but the void
- 7:20wanted him to. So he's finally turning
- 7:23completely turning over to the dark side and all of the
- 7:27thunderbolts. Yelena, Bucky, Ghost, US Agent
- 7:33and Alexi all run to hug him and say we're here for you, we're
- 7:37here, we care. That whole thing.
- 7:39I thought that was beautiful. I am not someone that cries
- 7:48during movies. I'm not, not at all.
- 7:50Not even a tiny bit. I will not cry during a movie,
- 7:54but I felt every single emotion in this movie.
- 8:00I don't like talk about it very often.
- 8:03I have my own set of mental health problems I try to work
- 8:08through daily, but Thunderbolts pretty much nailed each and
- 8:12every one of them. So I think it was very
- 8:19validating. It was very, It felt like you
- 8:22were seen because these are characters I read from the
- 8:25comics that I saw from other projects, and they're going
- 8:29through these things. They're feeling the
- 8:31hopelessness, they're feeling like no one wants them here.
- 8:34And they make you very, very aware of it immediately.
- 8:38Immediately. The movie starts off with Yelena
- 8:41talking about how she doesn't feel anything, how she's
- 8:44hopeless. She doesn't see a point.
- 8:46She doesn't know what she's doing.
- 8:47She doesn't she doesn't feel anything.
- 8:50And I think a lot of us have felt that, but I think it starts
- 8:53to hit a lot harder when it comes to Bob Lewis Pullman's
- 8:58character when they are in Val's place where she tells them all
- 9:06to show up to take out their target.
- 9:08But each and every each of Thunderbolt character is each
- 9:11other's targets. So she was just trying to kill
- 9:13them all off. And Bob is there.
- 9:18He was not invited. He was just there because he was
- 9:22part of the Century project and Val didn't know he was there.
- 9:25He didn't know she didn't know he was sleeping there.
- 9:27So Yelena says we all towards the end of it, I don't want to
- 9:33give everything away. Also, like I don't think I could
- 9:36put into words everything that happened.
- 9:38But towards the end Yelena said, OK, we we all got to go.
- 9:41We all, we don't have anyone. All of us are alone.
- 9:43So we have to work together to get out of here.
- 9:45And then Bob says I'll stay behind.
- 9:50And Elena says that's crazy. You you'll die.
- 9:53And he said, no, I think it's better for everyone if I stay
- 9:56behind. I think everyone felt that.
- 9:59I mean, not everyone goes through these feelings, but I
- 10:01think people who have gone through these, these feelings of
- 10:08hopelessness and feelings like, why would you?
- 10:12Why would anyone care if I'm still here?
- 10:15I don't want to be here. No one cares.
- 10:19No one's depending on me to be here.
- 10:21I think everyone who's had those feelings felt that when he said
- 10:26it, it hit really, really hard. It was really, really well done.
- 10:33And I'm really appreciative to Marvel for doing that because
- 10:37like I said, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and you
- 10:40can spout it out all day long that, you know, people have
- 10:45these problems, You're not alone, all that.
- 10:48But what does that really do when you're going through those
- 10:51feelings? You know, you're not alone.
- 10:57Great. If I felt that way right now,
- 11:03you saying that would do absolutely nothing for me.
- 11:06But seeing it in a movie that you really aren't the only one
- 11:12that felt that way. That hit home.
- 11:15I was an absolute mess in the theater in the best way.
- 11:21It it just felt nice. It felt good.
- 11:28It's it's hard. Mental health is so, so hard to
- 11:34handle to deal with. And I think a lot of us can
- 11:36agree to that. And if you can't, that's fine.
- 11:39That's how I feel. But I think the media does a lot
- 11:45of talking but doesn't do a lot of the work.
- 11:49You know, they say, here's the resources, here's who to call,
- 11:53but they don't show it. They don't make us relate to
- 11:56them. But this movie did just that.
- 11:59We. Whether you deal with Elena, who
- 12:02is feeling the hopelessness of depression, not knowing where
- 12:05she's going in life and knowing she's wasting her life.
- 12:09Whether you feel like Bucky, who failed at being a congressman or
- 12:14senator or whatever he was, I don't know.
- 12:16But who failed at that? Or you're like Century, who who
- 12:21cares if you live or die? Or, you know, you feel like
- 12:26Ghost, who's been a science experiment all of her life.
- 12:30Or you feel like John Walker whose wife and child left him
- 12:35because he was a mess. I think each person of the
- 12:40Thunderbolts you can relate to on a different level.
- 12:44Or like Alexi, he had this limo driving business where he drives
- 12:50around people and it was very clear that he wasn't happy in
- 12:55his life, but he was making himself think he was.
- 12:58He was distracting himself from his real feelings.
- 13:02They did such a beautiful job of that.
- 13:04Like no matter who you are you could find 1 character you can
- 13:08relate to in some way and that's just not something that happens
- 13:13anymore. Everything is so flashy.
- 13:15Everything is like like with Thor 11 Thunder.
- 13:21We all expected, most of us expected to see Thor go through
- 13:26the depression that he had and Infinity War an end game.
- 13:30The we all thought he would go through that, but we saw a
- 13:33montage of him losing the weight, getting thinner, getting
- 13:37stronger, a hat saying strongest Avenger, and it's like that was
- 13:41disservice. We should have seen him go
- 13:45through those emotions. We should have been able to
- 13:46relate to those emotions. Thunderbolts did just that.
- 13:53By the end of it, I agreed with what Alexi said.
- 13:57I'm very full, very filled. There just so much about it that
- 14:06I really appreciate. I there's not many movies that
- 14:08I'll watch and right at the end of it, I think to myself, I wish
- 14:13I could go back and watch it again for the first time, but
- 14:15this was one of them. I'd say this is easily my
- 14:18favorite MCU movie because it hit so many different tones for
- 14:24me. So many the action, the
- 14:28friendships, the the humor even it was all just so top tier.
- 14:35There were a few things that like I wish they would have done
- 14:38differently. Like Mel, who is Val's assistant
- 14:43who wears A songbird necklace. Songbird's name is Melissa Gold.
- 14:49There's like no reference to her being Songbird at all.
- 14:54I don't know if that's maybe it's a deleted scene.
- 14:56Maybe I'm just reaching really bad, but like, I made an episode
- 15:02in everything explaining who Songbird is, for goodness sake.
- 15:06You can check that out on my channel if you're interested.
- 15:10But it was in, it was a lot. Val was a horrible person, as
- 15:16she should have been. She plays that character so, so
- 15:20well. But at the end of it, when
- 15:22Yelena says we own you now, that was beautiful.
- 15:32But yeah, by the end of it, they we found out what the asterisk
- 15:35meant. It meant New Avengers, not dark
- 15:37Avengers like I thought it would be.
- 15:39It's New Avengers, which is interesting because like, none
- 15:43of them were on the Earth 616 New Avengers team.
- 15:48So I'm curious to see where that that goes.
- 15:50But I might also make an episode all about the New Avengers.
- 15:53So who knows what the future holds for this little content
- 15:58creator. But the post credit scenes, we
- 16:05got to talk about the credit scenes.
- 16:07The first one was Alexi standing in the cereal aisle at the store
- 16:15and he was saying, huh, look at this.
- 16:18Look at this box of Wheaties, Who's on this one?
- 16:21And the poor Alexi, the woman just did not care at all that he
- 16:24was on that box. So that that was very funny.
- 16:27But the post credits scene, like so much happened in that post
- 16:35credits scene, and it's like Sam Wilson wants to sue for the name
- 16:42Avengers. No one's taken them seriously as
- 16:47the New Avengers, which I think we're all very confused because
- 16:52Sam said he was going to start Avengers, a new set of Avengers,
- 16:56and then they did so a little confused about that.
- 17:00But most of all, it showed us our first look at the Fantastic
- 17:07Four arriving to the MCU, besides the trailers and all
- 17:12that. But they said, oh, a spaceship
- 17:15is coming towards the Earth, it's unidentified, all that, all
- 17:18that and all that. But then they zoom in on it and
- 17:20it has the four for Fantastic Four.
- 17:23So can I just say like my theater had like no idea what
- 17:31they're talking about 'cause everyone was waiting for the
- 17:34trailer for not the trailer for the post credit scene, 'cause I
- 17:38had to tell a few people like, hey, there's two just so you
- 17:40know, 'cause they're like standing up and I'd want to be
- 17:42told. So at the end of it were all
- 17:47like bated breaths for this really long post credit scene.
- 17:51And at the end it shows the spaceship and everyone in that
- 17:56audience was like, oh, it's it's Doom, it's Doctor Doom.
- 18:00Or like just saying like the most random thing.
- 18:03Like there was a few who was like, oh, it's Guardians of the
- 18:05Galaxy, oh it's Adam Warlock, oh it's going to be Silver Surfer.
- 18:10And I was like, oh, it's Fantastic Four just 'cause I
- 18:15knew it and someone laughed at me for saying it, and then it
- 18:20was Fantastic Four. So.
- 18:25But whatever that was, I'm sorry to go on that little ramp, but I
- 18:28was right. So that's what matters.
- 18:30I'm not right very often. So I'm going to live on this
- 18:32high for a long time. But yeah, I would say
- 18:38Thunderbolts. I'd say 99.5 out of 10.
- 18:43It's easily my favorite one. Like I said, my favorite MC
- 18:46movie, top MCU movie in top MCU movie.
- 18:50I'm sorry it is so late right now.
- 18:52I am so tired. But I had to get this out before
- 18:55I went to bed while it was so fresh in my memory.
- 18:59But yeah, so I'll probably, this won't be the last time I talk
- 19:04about it on my podcast and I'm really hoping to see it again
- 19:08because it just, I don't know, it's been a lot lately,
- 19:16personally, it's been a lot. And I guess I really just needed
- 19:21to know that I'm not the only one that's felt those things and
- 19:25I really appreciate that. So if anyone else is out there
- 19:29struggling, I, I hope you find some comfort in the movie or
- 19:35somewhere else, I don't know. But if you do have these
- 19:38feelings, please reach out to someone, a friend, family.
- 19:44I know you're not alone. You're not alone in your
- 19:48feelings, but it is nice to feel, actually feel that you're
- 19:53not alone, not just be told it. So I hope you guys are OK.
- 19:57I hope you guys also enjoyed the movie.
- 19:59Please let me know in the comments.
- 20:01Did you get any merch? Because I did.
- 20:04I got the Bucky top for my cup and I got the popcorn bucket.
- 20:10So I was very happy about that. And look at it, it's like.
- 20:15The eyebrows, that's amazing so funny.
- 20:18I was very happy about this because I never get to get
- 20:21these. So that is my review.
- 20:24Please let me know in the comments what you thought of it
- 20:28did you like it? Did you hate it?
- 20:29Do you love it? Do you not like it?
- 20:31What was your favorite part and how many times are you guys
- 20:34going to see the movie? Because like I want to see see
- 20:37it so many times because I feel like I've missed a lot.
- 20:42Just I'm not good at picking up things on the first try.
- 20:45When I first watch a movie, I have to watch it a few times.
- 20:48So if I missed a bunch of references, I'll get on the
- 20:52second time. So thank you for listening to
- 20:55this. Sorry I started rambling.
- 20:58That's kind of what I do when it is 12:30 at night and I woke up
- 21:02at 4:00 AM. So with that being said, be sure
- 21:08to like and subscribe and have a marvelous day.
